Lithics fight this impossible dreary reality with a bold minimalist vision, “Can I be myself?” A stern danceable sound that summons cut up snapshots of Su Tissue and Mark E Smith, an imagined landscape where Captain Beefheart hits that 99 Records “Too Many Creeps” beat.

This is the sound of possibility. A total collaborative vision: Aubrey Hornor’s stark stilted vocals intoning over her and Mason Crumley’s wired guitar parts, like lightbulb flashes and the whir of insects unspooled and playing off each other. Bob Desaulniers’ basslines give both structure and dissonance to the endeavor, and along with Wiley Hickson on drums, this is a rhythm section recalling art damaged yet danceable noise made in the detritus of failing cities in the late 70s/early 80s (The Lower East Side, Cleveland, Manchester…). Except Lithics is happening now, a continuing part of the vital art punk DIY underground in Portland, Oregon.

Lithics create a world that seems like it is collapsing as it’s being built. Mating Surfaces is an unnerving sound, total in its commitment to a specific vision, DIY minimalist art punk that speaks to the fact that whenever someone says the underground is dead it just demonstrates that they are just too past it to know any better.

While notorious in the Chicago streets, RP Boo's music had been unfairly confined to a few white labels and self-released mixtapes until his two archival Planet Mu LPs Legacy and Fingers, Bank Pads & Shoe Prints introduced broader audiences to his sonic history, some of it fifteen years after it was first recorded.

I’ll Tell You What! is the next step in his mission, and the first time he’s released an album of contemporary material. The title, a favorite maxim of his, welcomes listeners to sit down and let him narrate in the unforgettable abstract fashion he's known for. He explores familiar motifs such as the cosmos, movement, and opposition, using densely interwoven vocals, unpredictable percussion, and evil humming bass as his tools of choice.

RP Boo’s music doesn’t follow the traditional rules that most compositions do.

Layering decades of samples from yesteryear to the present over his commanding vocal cut-ups, he transports the listener to their own realm of the space-time continuum. The main difference between this record and his prior work is now we hear Boo tell new stories about preaching his gospel outside of Chicago, from his experiences frantically touring the globe over the last five years. The words “things ain’t been the same / since I hopped the plane” are repeated on top of engine sounds and rumbling bass on Flight 1235, a glorious paean to his new jet-setting adventures.

The spirit of competition runs through RP’s veins as much as blood does, something you can’t unlearn when you’ve been making music for Chicago’s footwork circuit as long as he has. The local culture has served as a shelter from the violence that has plagued the city, pitting kids against each other with their feet rather than weapons. On At War Boo reminds us “we are at war in the streets”, a double meaning to both the mayhem in this world and the sweetness of rivalry on the dance floor. Another battle-themed track Cloudy Back Yard, one of the spacier moments on this album, is an abstract on the state of footwork’s home. Chicago remains the backyard of this artform even though it’s left the porch and traveled to new neighborhoods worldwide. Back at home though, competition among the DJs and dancers continues, and as the man himself says, “with all this hate, there’s smoke, and it’s cloudy”.

I’ll Tell You What! throws more than a few curveballs into the mix. Footwork has always borrowed from hip-hop, and many vocal tracks are almost condensed raps, dating back to the street chants pioneered on Dance Mania Records in the ghetto house days. On Bounty, Boo grabs the mic and brazenly lays down a full-on verse of terror over a thick atmosphere of his signature sweltering low-end and erratic Roland R-70 patterns.

While he’s most famous for his confrontational battle anthems, his melancholy moments are just as powerful. You get the best of both of those worlds on U-Don’t No, with soulful samples finishing his own cocky sentences, one of the most elegant tracks RP has made to date. Deep Sole closes the record out, with the words “It’s always beautiful at the end” looping over waves of hypnotic synthesis, confidently looking death straight in the eyes.

BLUEGRASS CHAMPS LIVE FROM THE DON OWENS SHOW CD STREET DATE: 07/06/18 This recording is as much about rockabilly, ‘50s country and blues as it is about bluegrass - more a hybrid by a young, but seasoned, combo in changing musical times. The Bluegrass Champs held their own or even bested other Washington D.C. talents like Roy Clark, Patsy Cline, Link Wray and Charlie Daniels. They had spent most all of their lives in music and in the late 1950’s were soaking up all the new sounds without denying airy mountain roots. Made up of four members of Country Music Hall of Fame inductee Pop Stoneman’s family, the Bluegrass Champs were master musicians by 1958.

As houseband on the Don Owens Show, the Bluegrass Champs were often called upon to back guest singers and players. Scott Stoneman “single-handedly dragged country fiddle into the 20th century,” according to music historian Charles Wolfe. In a radio interview, Jerry Garcia stated, “When I needed inspiration I went down and listened to Scott Stoneman solo.” Jimmy Stoneman’s upright bass playing kept the thunderous sound tight as a drum with unerring competence. Donna Stoneman’s bright, chirping mandolin style and dancing stage presence upstaged all her male counterparts and even Patsy Cline in her most risque outfit. Brother Van’s rhythm guitar solidified the sound and his whooping and hollering added real heart to the Champs’ sound.

This album spotlights the Bluegrass Champs and their performances on the Don Owens Show. Recorded

by Leon Kagarise directly from a late 1950s TV broadcast, this record also showcases the jamboree nature of the program, including live commercial reads and commentary by Don Owens himself.

Working from ‘The Vennel’, his home studio in South Queensferry, Scotland, Ben Chatwin creates a musical language permeated with a tension between electronic and acoustic worlds.

Set for release on 6th July 2018 through Village Green Recordings, ‘Staccato Signals’ is a bolder and more ambitious record than anything he has written before, largely the result of relinquishing different levels of control over the musical process. What emerges is a daring, vivid and emotionally-charged music unshackled from a traditional sense of structure and genre. Throughout the album mournful strings are engulfed by harsh, synthetic tones and disorienting climaxes of electronics. But while these jagged, synthesized textures needle the album together, the acoustic instruments that feature throughout the album continually provide a human counterbalance.

Ben initially set out to make a purely electronic record, using primarily analogue and modular synthesisers and harnessing the unpredictability of hardware sequencers to write melodic lines rather than by hand with a keyboard.

This was about giving up control to the machines – leaving them to their own devices, allowing chance and random elements

to decide the direction of the music, ultimately making them more of a collaborator than a tool.

Towards the end of its writing, Ben felt he needed to push further into new territory, to invent entirely new sounds and textures. He decided to work with a string quartet, exploring innovative ways to fold, bury and combine both strings and brass into his industrial, noisy and chaotic electronic template. Again, this was about giving up control – working with other musicians, allowing them to improvise and arrange parts in order to find those special moments where something unexpected happens. The writing process became a search for those moments, the short, sharp flashes of inspiration – the staccato signals.

This constant pull between the acoustic and the electronic, man versus machine, and the agile production Ben utilised to maintain their balance, is what gives ‘Staccato Signals’ its powerful and beguiling character. Following ‘The Sleeper Awakes’ (2015) and ‘Heat & Entropy’ (2016), ‘Staccato Signals’ is Ben’s third album under his own name and will no doubt appeal to fans of the hybrid forms of Ben Frost, Tim Hecker and Boards of Canada. He has performed live across the globe with the likes of William Basinski, Hauschka, Tim Hecker, Oneohtrix Point Never and Loscil.

Producer Okzharp and vocalist-artist-dancer Manthe Ribane both hail from South Africa, where Manthe still resides, while Okzharp lives in the London where he is a DJ and producer, initially cutting his teeth in LV, who in 2007 were one of the very first acts signed to Hyperdub.

Manthe has been at the forefront of South Africa's cutting edge fashion, art and dance worlds for over a decade. After leaving LV, Okzharp and Manthe started collaborating, going on to release two well-received EPs on Hyperdub, ‘Dumella 113’ and ‘Tell Your Vision’, recorded in Joburg and London respectively.

The recording of ‘Closer Apart' reflects the title. Okzharp says 'Most of the music came out of headphone moments in hotel rooms, planes and airports in the brief periods of time that we spent together.’ Describing Manthe as a co -producer, he continues ‘She selected instrumental sketches and we developed them together, sometimes just keeping the bare bones or a melody or rhythm, or trying different elements or sounds.’

Even though the album was built long distance, the short periods they spent together were the ground zero for creativity. Okzharp recalls 'One particular moment in Milan last year, we had a whole free day before our flight so we visited the Salone di Mobile design show. We were so inspired by an installation there just walking around, listening to the amazing soundtrack. That evening our flight was delayed, so we sat on the floor of the airport terminal putting musical ideas down for 'Time Machine' on the laptop speakers and writing the lyrics. "Tic Toc time, we'll be fine / Airport queues, cerulean blues / Viper trails cross the skies / Lights reflect in your eyes...” ‘ ‘Closer Apart’ has a softness and openness that contrasts the tougher sound of the EPs. Manthe explains, 'The new music is a 360 turn, an expression of my “Lady” side. I grew up listening to Jazz, Classic and Gospel, I am a very soft spoken person, and it resonates with being confident with that. It's been crazy finding balance and finding a smart way to strengthen my weaknesses, I had to trust the process.’

After a youth spent omnivorously consuming a wide variety of American club cultures, Rizzla studied music and history in Trinidad where they became obsessed with the sonics of counterculture and the musical language of resistance. Alongside longtime collaborator D’hana Perry, they founded the KUNQ collective, a growing alliance of queer artists working in music and visual media. They previously released Iron Cages on Fade to Mind, and has been affiliated with Kingdom’s Fade to Mind label since its inception. After relocating to Brooklyn, Rizzla served some time in New York’s alternative club scene. With a discography composed of both self and official releases, Rizzla continues to blend DIY aesthetics with pop-influenced productions, taking influence from both the transcendent and the horrific qualities of our times.

ABOUT “BLACK ACCESS / BLACK AXES”: Like the resonant African-American traditions that long precede them, the Black Spirituals are equal parts choreographed and improvisational, containing simultaneously measuredly deliberate and frenetically urgent sonicities.

True to name, the Black Spirituals evoke and produce a Black spirituality in the sonorous tradition of Black flight calling us to follow the North Star and any and all other pathways to freedom. It’s the choreographed and synergistic spontaneity and improvisation with clear inspirations drawn from jazz traditions, indigenous African drumming, and anti/de-colonial musico-theological and ritualistic traditions across the Afro diaspora; and it’s an expression that constitutes the kind of musical fugitivity most organically and innately produced by Black Americans in our “postemancipation” captive state. It’s a music for music’s sake, and it’s a feverish cathartic expression of freedom dreams with true liberatory capacity.

The Black Spirituals, like their musical forebearers, are fugitive planners enacting, per Harney & Moten, “ruptural and enraptured” soundscapes and offering a space of refuge within which enlightenment can be understood and, thus, enacted.

But this is not music alone. The Black Spirituals are a transdisciplinary and genre transcendent epistemic framework that exists both in itself and in complement with other artists. Black Access Black Axes is a project expressing Black vernacularity as a solo-duetting avant-garde musical technology driven by clear need to contain and articulate both the world in which we live and the dire need to flee and imagine and create another. The album’s core are the drone-like meditative frequencies recalling an ever-present sounding alarm: a state of emergency, an alarm signaling the need for and actualisation of Black escape, a Black articulation of futurity only accessible through distortions and conversing-dueling guitar and drum.

Though this is the last joint project with which Zachary James Watkins & Marshall Trammell will bless us, the beauty in their music is their dynamism together as well as apart. So/but before we continue to be blessed with their respective solo workings (made evident in this and all the group’s work), this is an invitation to revel in this deeply affective creation born out of their wellspring of love for Black people and our deservingness of freedom. You may recognize this fine fellow as the bass player for such acts as The Jay Vons, Reigning Sound, and Lee Field's Expressions. Luckily for us he found some down time to pen the two killers we offer up on this state-of-the-ar t petroleum based disc. The A-side opens with an electric twelve-string riff whose mix of punchy melody and laid-back strumming sounds more akin to west coast psychedelia than the folk-rock sounds generally associated with the instrument - giving the tune a brooding platform from which Trokan tells a tale of a malcontent whose hard-hear ted lover is Too Far Gone. On the flip you'll find a floaty, genre-bending ballad that one might expect on a Brenton Wood a-side, but is executed with the rawness of a moody teen-beat b-side from the '60s. The tough call and response backing vocals juxtaposed to Benny's own raspy yet vulnerable lead make for a truly stunning piece of modern pop.

Chris Rosi and Corey Cunningham had become friends when the pair toured together in their bands Plateaus and Terry Malts in 2011; by 2015 both had moved to Los Angeles where they began the band in earnest with Rosi on guitar and Cunningham on bass. The duo recruited engineer/drummer Jon Greene to help them commit their shambolic paeans to kiwi pop onto tape, and their self-titled debut came out in Spring 2017.

After the passing of Jon Greene, the pair re-grouped with drummer Brice Bradley and bassist Jenny Moffett, a move that enabled Cunningham to switch to lead guitar and keyboards. They soon decamped to N Hollywood’s Primitive Ear studio where they tracked the 10 songs that make up Used To Yesterday and recruited producer Kyle Mullarky (The Allah-lahs), who created a final mix that really captures the band's rhythmic drive and melodic verve.

Used To Yesterday continues Smokescreen’s zeal for New Zealand pop but also incorporates influences from the more melodic side of Messthetics-era DIY pop and expands into classic indie pop territory, a natural fit for the Slumberland Records roster. First single "The Lost Song" perfectly encapsulates where the band is coming from on this new record; literally a lost demo from the group's earliest days, it is here given a NZ-meets-Athens GA arrangement, galloping along at an urgent clip and packed with guitars that strum and jangle in magical unison.

Where Smokescreens really excel is in the quality of their songwriting and the ability to incorporate a disparate set of influences while still forging their own sound and identity. The song "Used To Yesterday" is classic power-pop, riding a chunky three chord riff and leavened by a bright, clanging lead. Elsewhere we find nods to The Velvet Underground ("Fool Me"), The Clean ("Someone New") and SF's beloved The Aislers Set ("Waiting For Summer").

Smokescreens are such skilled writers and keen students of sound that their cover of the über-obscure NZ band Wasp Factory's "Steel Blue Skies" fits in seamlessly. Album closer "Falling Down" could be a lost single from LA's paisley underground and definitely leaves the listener itching to hear where the band goes next.

Liam Singer is a Portland, OR native who spent most of his youth in one of four places: 1) taking music lessons on piano and harpsichord 2) hunching over his beloved 4-track in his bedroom 3) working at a local junk store, where he spent most of his money accumulating old beaten-up synths 4) attending high school on the wealthy side of town, where he wasn’t exactly a loner but didn’t fit in much either.

His music has always straddled the line between formal classical knowledge and blind, self-taught fumbling on unfamiliar instruments like the accordion and theremin. With Finish Him, Singer revives his love of synthesizers and ‘80s pop for a more direct-to-the-hips approach than his previous material, but with a Baroque twist and a flair for melodrama. Think Philip Glass’ Einstein on the Beach as an off-Broadway musical starring Kate Bush, Nick Cave, and Sufjan Stevens and you’re in the ballpark.

Although best known for their work with Minimal Compact and Wire, the duo’s work as Immersion provides an outlet for their ongoing fascination in crafting enthralling, unique musical soundscapes. It follows 2016’s Analogue Creatures Living on An Island, which saw the duo return to the studio after a lengthy hiatus. A fully realised and precision-tooled longplayer that sits in an outernational beat continuum alongside the likes of Jamaica’s Equiknoxx, Canada’s Seekersinternational and Portugal’s Principe crew.

Miss Red’s fierce flow rides roughshod over warped bashment anthems like “Shock Out” and “One Shot Killer”, but the album also showcases her ability to adapt to different flavours with the addition of ethereal harmonies to the psyched out arcade blips of “Clouds” or the plaintive dystopian lament of “War”. Similarly, the Bug’s riddims are a masterclass in restraint, retaining his trademark heaviness but taking a step back from the atmospheric ambience of his recent work with Burial and Earth. Instead this is an example of the dexterity with which Martin can deploy a minimal arrangement, taking a bassline, beat, FX and vocal and sharpening those elements for maximum dancefloor devastation.

In 2015 she dropped her first solo mixtape, ​Murder​, with The Bug’s riddims supplemented with contributions from other producers such as Mark Pritchard, Mumdance and Andy Stott. Subsequent singles on her own Red label and the in-house imprint of iconic London record shop Sounds Of The Universe have sold out straight away, and she has received acclaim for her collaborations with Warp Records artist Gaika.

The Miss Red persona has developed over time spent in London and Berlin, and as a regular member of the Bug’s touring line-up alongside fellow MCs Flowdan, Daddy Freddy, Warrior Queen and Riko Dan. From before she left Tel Aviv she was magnetically attracted to the sound, style and fashion of the reggae scene in Jamaica: “Nicodemus really influenced me, but as a girl, it wasn’t my voice, and it was listening to those 80s dancehall gyals that I gravitated towards, because they were chatting as proud girls, and from a female perspective, so it was vocalists like Sister Nancy and Lady Ann that really made the biggest impression on me”. ​Of K.O. ​specifically, she comments: ​“For me, reggae is the foundation of this record but the album’s movement is freer. It mirrors my need to move and keep challenging myself. As a white Israeli girl working as an MC in the music industry, and in particular as a singer, it’s a BIG battle to be taken seriously, and as a woman in the music industry, I am in an obvious minority, the situation is clear, the MAN is still in control - that has got to be addressed, and changed.”
