Sweatson Klank grew up on heartfelt songs and soulful grooves, collecting mountains of records in the urban sprawl of Los Angeles. His love for music was formed while drenched in the warmth of the LA sun and honesty of the 70's and 80’s artists he idolized. It’s only natural that now, in a world consumed and hypnotized by technology, he presents 'Super Natural Delights,’ a powerfully stripped down, soulful sound that slyly nods to its listener and says "step back and reconnect.”

As the title alludes to "Super Natural Delights" veers away from the “future bass” tag and dives head first into the textural balance between real instrumentation and electronic enhancement. Here the multi-instrumentalist and producer plays guitars, bass, horns, flutes, and vibraphone, alongside analog synthesizers, drum machines and samples, forming a feel good record that pays homage to the past while pushing vibes forward in a distinctly West Coast fasion.

For Sweatson Klank this began in the late 90's with hip hop beats and grew into the now world renowned LA beat-scene alongside contemporaries like Flying Lotus, Ras G, Teebs, Dibiase and all of those who passed through the legendary Sketchbook and Low End Theory club nights. 'Super Natural Delights" feels like a culmination of years of honing ones craft, and it proudly states: “I’m Home!"

As a couple and individually, Buddy and Julie have been nominated and received multiple awards including Grammy’s, Americana Awards, Dove Awards among others. Julie Miller’s songs have been recorded by a diverse range of artists including Emmylou Harris, Lee Ann Womack, Levon Helm, Solomon Burke, and Miranda Lambert. Buddy Miller is known for his work as a guitarist, performing live and in the studio with artists such as Robert Plant, Alison Krauss, Steve Earle and Emmylou Harris. Buddy’s production credits include albums with Plant, Harris, Earle, Patty Griffin, Shawn Colvin and many more.

Breakdown On 20th Ave. South is a first rate showcase for Julie’s finely crafted lyrics.

There is a line from the track “Spittin’ on Fire” that best illustrates Julie’s sharp edged word play: “You’re a dangerous little storm, one part cold and one part warm.”

The song “War Child” is a cry for help that usually goes unheard. A cry for help from thousands and thousands of children stolen from their families, forced to carry a gun at ages as young as 7 or 8. Never to see home again. Tracks like, “I’m Gonna Make You Love Me” and “Everything Is Your Fault” hint at the ups and downs of love. The entire album is tied together by Buddy’s unfussy production style. Breakdown On 20th Ave. South is a treat for long time fans of Buddy & Julie and a delightful discovery for new listeners.

Harry and the Potters are the first wizard rock band.

They play songs exclusively about the Harry Potter books. The band consists of brothers Joe and Paul DeGeorge.

Since 2002, Harry and the Potters have performed over 800 shows in libraries, rock clubs, art spaces, bookstores, basements, and all ages venues all over the world. Their high-energy live show has become legendary. Pitchfork placed the band in their Best Live Shows of 2005 list noting, "the greatest rock and roll tour of the year took place this past summer in public libraries across America…The Decemberists wish they could lit-rock like this.”

Inspired by equal parts Fugazi and They Might Be Giants, Bruce Springsteen and Negativland, the band continues to occupy a bizarre niche that brings their DIY punk ethos to the fandom of a mainstream cultural phenomena.

In 2019, they will release Lumos, their first full-length album in over a decade, and will embark on an extensive 90 day tour of libraries across the United States.

All of the music featured here on this new Soul Jazz Records collection was created by Brazilian artists in the USA in the 1970s.

In the early 1970s North American jazz musicians were eager to work with upcoming Brazilian musicians. Miles Davis invited Airto Moreira to join his new ‘electric’ band, Dom Um Romao (part of Sérgio Mendes’ legendary Brazil ‘66 in the 1960s) joined the fusion group Weather Report, Flora Purim and Airto both became a part of Chick Corea’s new project Light As A Feather, Wayne Shorter collaborated with Milton Nascimento, George Duke recorded Brazilian Love Affair, and so on.

With all the attention placed on them from these important jazz artists, North America became the new musical playground for a large number of these Brazilian artists – Airto Moreira, Flora Purim, Sérgio Mendes, Luiz Bonfá, Eumir Deodato, João Donato and many others.

Most of these musicians had already experienced success through the earlier popularity of bossa nova in the 1960s, either at home in Brazil or in the USA. But by the end of the 1960s many Brazilian artists had left their own country, as the military dictatorship became progressively more authoritarian and repressive. In the USA, through their critically acclaimed work for Miles Davis, Weather Report, Light As A Feather etc., all of these artists were now given reign to explore new musical terrains away from the restrictions of both a musical genre and a state censor back in Brazil.

This collection brings together some of these finest works and comes complete with extensive notes that explains the path these musicians took from Brazil to the USA and shows the political and musical links between Brazil and the USA that created the conditions for this unique fusion of these two distinct cultures, North American Jazz and Brazilian music, that occurred in the 1970s.

The album comes as a deluxe gatefold double vinyl LP, complete with download code, full sleeve notes, exclusive photography, double inner sleeves. The CD contains CD plus a large 40-page outsize booklet all housed in Soul Jazz slipcase.

Overview: Transcendental tape loops and bedroom ambient dream states from the teenage mind of Warren Defever aka His Name Is Alive. All The Mirrors in the House is the first of three projected releases of very early works by the Detroit-based savant, prior to signing to 4AD in the late-1980s. With help transferring ageing cassettes and annotating the results from Shelley Salant of Tyvek, the unearthed results are revelatory - a gorgeous sequence of gently decaying tone float made with an incredibly primitive DIY set-up.

As Defever recounts in the liner notes: ​“By age ten, I had a tape recorder and was using it to capture the sounds of nearby lakes, thunderstorms, and my older brother’s LP collection played at the wrong speeds. As a teenager, I got deep into all kinds of music - punk, new age, blues - and played bass in the high school jazz band, as well as studying Bach chorale harmonization and counterpoint. My first album consists of rhythm tracks made of loops of the next door neighbor raking leaves and shoveling the driveway with echoey guitars and vocals with lyrics about ghosts.”

Inner sleeve essay and interview by Mike McGonigal, the founder of Chemical Balance magazine and YETI publishing, and the author of acclaimed books on My Bloody Valentine and Galaxie 500.

RIYL​: Eno Ambient series, William Basinski, Kranky Records His Name is Alive has had over a hundred releases since their first cassette in 1986. HNIA spent 13 years recording for the legendary label 4AD and sold 100,000+ records, toured the world, received gold and platinum records for soundtracking Tom Cruise’s nervous breakdown in the movie Jerry Maguire and collaborated on two short films with famed animators the Quay Brothers, and name-checked by David Bowie as one of his favourite artists. Warren Defever continues to live and work in Detroit - he has recently recorded Universal Eyes for Lower Floor Music and is one of the engineers heading up Third Man’s recently opening mastering studio.

‘Idle Mind’ is the debut album of Anna-Mieke Bishop, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Wicklow, Ireland. Rooted in folk, the ten tracks on the record philosophise through abstract lyrics about place, age, belonging and various societal misalignments. “Right now, as our lives become a little more virtual, augmented and artificial, Anna Mieke’s songs with their infinity of interlaced traditions and her voice with its alluring melody of intimacy is a wonderful and very welcome gift” Other Voices….Musical landscapes are weaved into song on Greek bouzouki, guitar and piano (and cello, in recordings). As a solo performer and collaborative artist, she has joined forces with a diverse mix of other artists, most notably Brían Mac Gloinn (of folk duo Ye Vagabonds), who, as well as playing on all of the above, adds drones on Indian harmonium and fiddle accompaniment. Another, more recent, collaborator is Matthew Jacobson (of contemporary jazz ensemble Insufficient Funs) adding a flare on percussion. Themes and inspiration for Anna-Mieke’s songs stem from a colourful background of experience: learning Maori songs at school in New Zealand and sean-nós songs off the coast of Ireland; hitch-hiking through Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria, picking up traditional songs along the way; cycling from her home in Wicklow to the southern tip of Spain; living in Granada for a while, and then, in Cork, performing cello in the experimental improv group, HEX. Anna-Mieke has shared the stage with many established artists, supporting the likes of Lisa Hannigan, Martin Hayes, This Is The Kit, Rozi Plain, Lankum, Gyda Valtysdottir (mum), Rachel Sermanni, Sarah Neufeld (Arcade Fire), and Ye Vagabonds, while sharing the stage with David Kitt, Landless and Rosie Carney. From performing in larger venues such as the National Concert Hall and to opening the inaugural RTE Radio Folk Awards in Vicar Street, to underground caves, to manor house ballrooms, to tiny cafés and bookshops, to the precarious ruins of a church, to forest hideaways in the hills of France, Anna-Mieke has shared her songs in a curious combination of spaces.

New York duo the Ballet marry the DIY ethos of the Hidden Cameras with the wry poeticism of the Magnetic Fields and the romantic pop of Jens Lekman, to create literate, infectious pop gems. Formed in 2005 by Greg Goldberg and Craig Willse, the Ballet self-released two previous albums: Mattachine! (2006) and Bear Life (2009). These caught the attention of Fortuna Pop!, which released their third album, I Blame Society, in 2013. In addition to citing Stephin Merritt as an influence, Goldberg, who writes and home records all of the band’s songs, draws from an array of pop artists and periods, from 60’s bubblegum to 80’s synthpop and 90’s indiepop, fusing these in sophisticated and novel ways that reward repeat listening. Matchy Matchy, is a return to the upbeat tenor of the band’s first two albums. While inspired by Goldberg’s experience navigating an open relationship with his boyfriend of 14 years, Matchy Matchy is not straightforwardly autobiographical; Goldberg writes from his experience, while also fantasizing about the perspective of his objects of desire, leaving ambiguous which is which. He is generally less melancholic than on I Blame Society, and fans will notice a return to earlier themes (“Looking” tackles Grindr, as “Personal” did Gaydar in 2006). Goldberg is not shy to write songs with explicitly queer subjects (“But I’m a Top,” “Messing Around,” “First Time in a Gay Bar”), while also taking on more universal longings, pleasures, and frustrations (“Jersey,” “Love Letter,” “Cry Baby”).

met in Chicago, the project formed on a joint west coast tour of both of their solo acts. After experiencing acute shared hallucinations in a seemingly haunted motel in Montana and enduring a series of show cancelations, forest fires, and other freak incidents, the duo decided to scrap their respective solo sets and play music together for their subsequent shows on the road. Johnson currently lives in Chicago, and Callier relocated from Chicago to LA in 2017.

As Gel Set, Callier has released LPs with Moniker Records and 2MR, while Johnson’s Matchess recordings have appeared on labels like Trouble In Mind Records and Monofonus Press. Johnson has recorded and performed extensively with Haley Fohr’s project Circuit Des Yeux, and plays with Hausu Mountain mainstay Natalie Chami (a.k.a. TALsounds) in an improvised drone/ambient project called Damiana.

Death’s Head Speaks, Simulation’s first release with Hausu Mountain, presents the duo’s vision of combinatory songwriting animated by electro inspired beat work, ethereal vocal lines, and passages of arrhythmic electronic bursts. While nominally a “dance” project closer to the solo work of Gel Set than the drifting improvisations of Matchess, Simulation strays far from any four-on-the-floor template by virtue of the complex narratives presented by their varied sessions, and the intertwined voices highlighted within their dense productions. Any given Simulation piece will present a beat grid flecked with syncopated kicks, noise formants used as drum tones, and pounding basslines capable of sparking the dance floor into motion. Johnson’s trademark organ and synth tones serve as a melodic focal point within each groove, winding through cascading leads or laying harmonic bedrocks of chordal pads. Callier’s voice sits up front in the space of each mix as it reaches the audience in the form of hushed spoken monologues or eruptions of shouted activity. Her vocals evoke the angelic choral chants of Grouper or Julianna Barwick as much as the stentorian proclamations of dance auteurs like Marie Davidson or Boy Harsher’s Jae Matthews. As Johnson’s voice swirls around her bandmate’s, the specter of 80’s EBM or new wave pop composition floats into view for a few moments before being subsumed back into the electronic pulse.

With each track on Death’s Head Speaks, Simulation presents a wide arc that leads listeners through diverse passages of one-off vocal moments and fluidly evolving networks of synth input. By complicating the emotional trajectories of their sessions, the duo lays out a view of modern life equally blessed and encumbered by the capabilities of constant interconnectivity. Surrounded by their machines, casting out their words in a disfiguring electronic haze, Simulation bears witness to the transhuman evolution of humankind increasingly mediated by technology that moves in or out of step with the emotions that inform our every move.

Over the last decade, M. Geddes Gengras has released an enormous catalog of wide-ranging, synth-focused music in both solo and collaborative settings. He has participated in influential experimental groups like Sun Araw, Pocahaunted, Robedoor, and Akron/Family. Along with Sun Araw’s Cameron Stallones and Alex Gray, and a host of Jamaican singers and artists, Gengras continues to blur the boundaries of dub and electronic music under the name Duppy Gun - a project which crystallized with an acclaimed collaboration called Icon Give Thank (RVNG, 2012) with roots reggae legends The Congos.

I Am The Last of That Green and Warm-Hued World, Gengras’s first release with Hausu Mountain, follows in the more ambientand drone-focused vein of his work, as explored on recent releases with labels like Leaving Records, Umor Rex, and Room40.

The album stretches through an 80-minute program of layered synth mosaics and expanses of serene drift that continually shift and reconfigure themselves into networks of interlaced harmonies and electronic textures. At any given moment, huge foundations of low-end drift swirl beneath angelic pads and soaring, quasi-melodic leads, as layers of environmental foley drip into view around the margins. Synth tones evoke the timbres of human vocal formants, stuttering digital glitch, or unidentifiable hand drum percussion. Mixing disparate sounds and moods in his palette, Gengras paints a mental journey through diverse emotional zones: quiet meditation under the desert sun at noon, egodestroying tidal wave swells slamming onto the beach, confused wandering through hostile territory under the cover of night.

I Am The Last of That Green and Warm-Hued World came into existence after M. Geddes Gengras’s father appeared to him in a dream and suggested that he read Stephen King’s The Dark Tower: The Gunslinger. The vivid, post-apocalyptic locales visited in the book, which range from mountain ranges to atomic water pumping stations to interdimensional portals, directly inform the auditory spaces that Gengras draws into life with this album. While ambient music often reaches the listener with a host of external signifiers meant to ground the music in some semblance of the physical world (see: oceanic album art, song titles that evoke specific images), Gengras’s music achieves a rare degree of topographical intricacy by virtue of his wide, dense mixes and the contrasting textures presented by his interlocking tiers of synthesis. Over the course of five extended sessions that range from 11 to 22 minutes each, the album sinks into passages of near-complete stasis and crests into segments animated by intermittent bursts of melody and muted, technoadjacent drum tones, settling into discrete atmospheres that percolate at different degrees of rhythmic complexity. All the while, M. Geddes Gengras allows individual elements to generatively interact and twist around each other to the point that no two moments present the same exact sounds. A far cry from willfully repetitive, loop-based ambient music, I Am The Last of That Green and Warm-Hued World extends before the listener as a fluctuating, self-contained biome, with the components of each composition carefully stacked together and charged with their own trajectory through time and imagined physical space.

The music that Chicago-based producer/composer Angel Marcloid makes under the new moniker Nonlocal Forecast distills her experimentation in the prog, jazz fusion, and new age disciplines into pristine instrumental compositions teeming with intricate harmonic structures and complex webs of programmed percussion. Orbiting as another satellite around her genre-obliterating flagship projects like Fire-Toolz and MindSpring Memories, Nonlocal Forecast centers Marcloid’s practice on a palette of technical leads and atmospheric MIDI synth arrangements. For the project’s debut album Bubble Universe!, Marcloid drew inspiration from her personal studies in quantum physics/mechanics and non-dual spirituality. These frameworks steer her toward a strain of micro/macrocosmic composition in which the granular unfurling of rhythms and melodic elements evoke the movement of celestial bodies as much as subatomic particles on the smallest scale.

Bubble Universe! finds Marcloid emulating the format of a live ensemble, painstakingly programming each instrument in DAW software without the use of samples. Marcloid’s tiered systems of digital synth patches, modeled exclusively after the Korg M1 and the Korg Wavestation, interact in waves of steadily chiming pulses and chordal washes before streaking off into climaxes of melodic hands-on-keyboard input. Her meticulously programmed percussion tracks attest to her experience drumming in prog rock bands as they flow through interlaced time signatures, syncopated hard grooves, and rapid-fire tom fills. In contrast to her network of synthetic voices, Marcloid’s moments of guitar pyrotechnics burst out of the mix with fluid lead picking and searing distortion. With this composite of digital and analog instruments, Nonlocal Forecast sketches out a style of progressive composition that runs adjacent to the work of Allan Holdsworth and Casiopea. When her arrangements shed layers of legible melody in favor of drifting synth expanses, her tracks melt into the realm of ambient or new age music in the spirit of Jonn Serrie or Steve Halpern.

ummer Cannibals’ fourth album Can’t Tell Me No is a defiant release whose very existence is the result of taking back power. After escaping a manipulative personal and creative relationship, guitarist/vocalist Jessica Boudreaux chose to scrap an entire record that had been finished for over a year and start from scratch. Along with Cassi Blum, Devin Shirley and Ethan Butman, Boudreaux wrote, recorded and mixed many of the new tracks during 14-hour days, emerging with the Portland, OR band’s first entirely self-engineered and produced album.

ormed in 2012, the Cannibals quickly gained a fervent following on the local scene, eventually playing with some of their musical heroes including L7, Mudhoney, Stephen Malkmus and The War on Drugs, and touring with Ted Leo & the Pharmacists and Cursive. Along the way, they released 2013’s No Makeup and 2015’s Show Us Your Mind on their own label, New Moss Records, and 2016’s Full Of It on Kill Rock Stars.

Show Us Your Mind appeared on NPR’s Sound Opinions Best of list in 2015, and Pitchfork said that on Full Of It, the Cannibals “expertly balance flame-belching Mad Max riffage with lyrics frankly exploring questions of co-dependence and need.”

Like the forests that creator William Sol roams in rural Washington state, Prana Crafter’s music is both familiar and ever-changing. Damon Locks is a Chicago-based visual artist, educator, vocalist, musician, and deejay. Known for decades of different projects in Chicago’s underground music scenes, Locks’s CV starts in the late 1980s with the band Trenchmouth (which featured Fred Armisen on drums) and is highlighted by work with The Eternals (coled by Trenchmouth bandmate Wayne Montana), Rob Mazurek’s Exploding Star Orchestra, collaborations with Nicole Mitchell, Ben LaMar Gay, and many others. In recent years Locks has traversed almost every media discipline… including sound/animation work using unheard Sun Ra recordings from Experimental Sound Studio’s archive (with Terri Kapsalis, Wayne Montana, and Rob Shaw); various collaborations with contemporary dancers & choreographers including Onye Ozuzu, Ayesha Jaco (of Move Me Soul), and Anna Martine Whitehead (on presentations & workshops with the Detroit Justice Center); participating in artist residencies at The New Quorum in New Orleans (alongside Nicole Mitchell, Lisa E Harris, Wadada Leo Smith, and others); teaching work with incarcerated artists for the Prison and Neighborhood Arts Project at Stateville maximum security prison; and producing album artwork for several International Anthem releases, including Makaya McCraven’s Universal Beings, Irreversible Entanglements, and more. ** Deluxe Vinyl Package **

Having performed and collaborated with the Maria Schneider Orchestra, David Bowie, Sufjan Stevens, Ivan Lins, Alicia Keys, Justin Timberlake, Wynton Marsalis, and the Saturday Night Live house band, trombonist and composer Ryan Keberle brings these experiences to bear leading his own band, Catharsis, which has released four acclaimed studio albums.

The album also underscores Keberle’s evolving roles as well, and features him not only on trombone but on vocals and keyboards.

It's the perfect soundtrack to these melancholic days as summer turns to fall. Pay extra attention to the lengthy ambient outro, a lovely touch that points to more new directions for this terrific band. On the b-side you'll find a dreamy, late-night cover of Sixpence None the Richer's "Kiss Me" that brings a wasted weariness to this tale of teenage yearning. Superbly-crafted pop is the order of the day here, with echoes of everything from prime Teenage Fanclub to Big Star to the southern power-pop of folks like Dwight Twilley and Tommy Hoehn. "Gone For Good" is 3:33 of pop perfection, with a marvelous melody, heavenly harmonies and a bit of a triumphant guitar solo sneaking in at the end. On the flip side we get another gem in "This Boy," a brief tune that still feels fully-formed, rather in the style of fellow West Bay songsmith Tony Molina. For innovative composer Max de Wardener, music is a kind of time travel, a means of exploring the antique and the arcane and repurposing them for a forward-facing now. Classically trained, de Wardener is nevertheless renowned for compositions that explore everything from church organs to self-built instruments, as well as electronics and more orthodox chamber configurations.

‘Palindrome’, as the title hints, is a piece of entirely symmetrical music, its written score a perfect mirror of itself, repeating over four bars. B-side ‘Sun Dogs’, meanwhile, features softly undulating analogue synths and subtle percussion for a much more relaxed affair. This EP precedes de Wardener’s first album with Village Green - ‘Kolmar’, due for release in July.
