Overview: pen·ti·men·to / noun Reappearance in a painting of earlier images, forms, or strokes that have been changed and painted over.

First new album in nine years by a musical visionary and hugely influential figure in new music. Continuing his lifelong exploration of the possibilities of the studio, fragments of performance are sampled, looped, overdubbed and re-arranged into beguiling unexpected shapes. Hassell applies the painterly technique of ‘pentimento’ to the arrangements, teasing out texture by the careful overlaying of sound, or a carefully timed reveal of the delicate bones pinning the frame of a track together. Smeared, gauzy, gorgeous atmospherics to perfectly soundtrack a vertical listening experience.

Jon Hassell Bio: A trumpet player, composer and musical conceptualist, Jon Hassell’s career bisects a multitude of strands in the history of the avant-garde and the development of genuinely new forms of music. Having studied under Karl-Heinz Stockhausen in Cologne (alongside future members of the band Can), he played on the original recording of Terry Riley’s ​In C (1968), was part of La Monte Young’s Theatre Of Eternal Music and studied Kiranic singing with Pandit Pran Nath, all of which informed his own instrumental technique and treatment of the trumpet with various electronic effects. A growing interest in the indigenous music of other cultures led to the invention of his ‘Fourth World’ blend of different styles, first heard on albums such as ​Vernal Equinox and ​Earthquake Island in the late-1970s. These caught the ear of Brian Eno, who collaborated with Hassell on the Possible Musics album, and used many of the Fourth World ideas on his ​My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts album with David Byrne. He has played on albums by artists including Talking Heads (the seminal ​Remain In Light​), Peter Gabriel, David Sylvian and Björk, composed film soundtracks and contributed to theatre works. In the past few years he has been acknowledged as a key influence on a new wave of artists including Oneohtrix Point Never, Huerco S and Visible Cloaks. In 2017 his music was celebrated with a compilation album on Optimo Music, ​Miracle Steps: Music From The Fourth World 1983 - 2017​.

from renowned NY-based producer and musician Will “Quantic”

Holland’s Los Míticos del Ritmo acordeon band. On this latest offering,

a sonidero special of Drake’s “Hotline Bling” is paired with original

footwork hybrid “Doombia”.

Heading up the A-Side, the catchy pop lines in Drake’s “Hotline

Bling” lend themselves perfectly to the cumbia percussion and rhythms

of Quantic’s phenomenal instrumental cover, to create something

magnetic and unforgettable. Elevating the traditional use of instruments like the accordion, alegre and guacharaca, Holland hits with a Mexican Rebajada (slowed down or screwed) beat, tuning his accordion by hand, in the tuning style of Calixto Ochoa.

“Hotline Bling” was first played by Holland in his DJ set for Boiler Room in Los Angeles last year, he elaborates: “The show was in a historic discoteca in LA, a city with a big appreciation for Colombian diasporic music and the influences of Mexican sonideros.” Cut to dub specially for the performance, the track won a remarkable reaction from the eager dancefloor and initiated a flurry of worldwide interest online (200K YouTube views).

The B-Side brings an unheard accordion cut in the form of “Doombia” – a manifestation of modern instrumentation and frenetic beats. “The BSide is an original, bringing accordion from the Colombian Atlantic closer to the digital footwork/house dance of Chicago. The flute plays an Andean melody with 808 snare keeping the double time rhythm” Holland explains.

About The Chisa Years: 1965–1975 (Rare and Unreleased) is a compilation album by South African jazz trumpeter Hugh Masekela. The album consists of 14 rare or forgotten tracks recorded by Stewart Levine and Hugh Masekela from 1965 to 1975 when they ran their own Chisa Records label.

Thom Jurek of Allmusic wrote “In sum, there isn’t a weak moment on this entire collection. It’s appeal is wide and deep and one can only hope this is the first of many volumes of this material to appear. BBE Records has done a stellar job in making this slab available.”

Joe Powers is from Edinburgh, far outside the network of the Grime capital of London. His caffeinated productions as Proc Fiskal are faster than usual, with many clocking in at 160bpm. ‘The Highland Mob’, his 2017 debut EP, opened up his music to open-eared footwork and drum’n’bass fans as well as the grime crowd.

After following that up with a jungle-inflected EP on Cosmic Bridge, ‘Insula’ switches the feel and intention towards a personal, and melodic music with one foot in Grime, infused with often comic, often wistful recorded moments from his environment.

He says ‘I wanted to be aware of where the music is coming from, referencing things I’m presently experiencing, like making Grime, my Radar radio show, phone addiction, alcohol, my surroundings, girls, depression, positivity, being unemployed, being employed and hating it, my friends etc. Trying to be true to myself instead of relying on other peoples’ nostalgia, and focusing on now.’

The record is a huge leap in vision, with delicate, pointillist melodies and intricate edits reminiscent of Grime producers such as Terror Danjah. It also resonates with Japanese video game music like that recently explored on the ‘Diggin' In The Carts’ compilation.

‘I think I probably make tunes to get out emotions I don’t express in day-to-day life. I used clips of my friends talking, drunk folk, and general Scottish life to preserve and represent what my experience is like right now, like a time capsule. Social media notification sounds are designed to release serotonin, which is what I’d like my music to do, to make me, and other people happy, and in using these manipulative noises in a positive way, I like to think I’m taking back the power of the manipulation.’

Proc Fiskal is adventurous and thoughtful as a producer, and at the young age of 21, his debut album is very advanced in its ideas and execution.

Its ten tracks owe a debt to Beach House, Brian Eno, Tame Impala, Cuban folk musician Silvio Rodriguez and an addictive Argentinean tea called Yerba Mate that fuelled its recording. When Zavala sings, time seems to stand still. Her haunting voice is hypnotic, her sensual songs are as much about capturing emotions as they are about telling tales. Born in northern Argentina, Malena was brought up in Britain from the age of three. For ‘Aliso’ she drew inspiration from the women in her family. Until 2016 Malena was in the band Oh So Quiet with her brother Lucas before he made a dream move to California.

As an older sibling he had been a strong musical influence and, while losing her mentor was hard at first, it was a vital step for her to step out of the shadows. Visiting Lucas in California at his house in Aliso Viejo, she felt a surge of energy and desire to prove herself, writing most of her first LP in a couple of weeks. LEON VYNEHALL “Nothing Is Still”

Emigrating from a leafy south east U.K. to New York City in the 1960s, their seven-day journey via boat from Southampton to Brooklyn, and the stories that followed, have only truly come to light upon the passing of his grandfather four years ago.

Vynehall has released two extended EP's so far, his 2014 breakthrough Music For The Uninvited (3024) - a record inspired by the funk, soul and hip-hop tapes his mum used to play on car journeys which finished the year on a plethora of 'Best of the Year' lists and 2016's Rojus EP (Running Back) which saw Vynehall building more layers and broadening the depth of his music to widespread critical acclaim including DJ Mag's 'Album of the Year' and 'Best New Music' from Pitchfork for fan favourite single 'Blush'.

On both, he was crafting luscious grooves that were destined to dominate dancefloors. Nothing Is Still however, is defiantly atmospheric and textural, and finds him harnessing his passion for early contemporary minimalist composers such as Gavin Bryars as well as records like Philip Glass’ Koyaanisqatsi and Terry Riley’s A Rainbow In Curved Air. The paperback novella is a 144-page paperback book. The cover is an uncoated card, printed Pantone Silver and Black.

It stands to reason that many vital albums come critically close to never being made. The eight-track upshot of doubt, upheaval and financial strain, Stains on Silence by Girls Names is one such release. Following 2015’s blitzing Arms Around a Vision, and the parting of drummer Gib Cassidy just over a year later, the Belfast band suddenly found themselves facing down a looming void. “There was a finished – and then aborted – mix of the album, which was shelved for six months,” reveals Girls Names frontman Cathal Cully. “We then took a break from all music and went back to full-time work. We chilled out from the stress of rushing the record and not being happy with it, as well as being skint with no impending touring on the cards and constantly having to worry about rent.” The stumbling blocks that proved a strain became the album’s defining breakthrough. Recorded in various locations including Belfast’s Start Together Studio with Ben McAuley, Cully’s home and the band’s practice space, spontaneous creation, cut-up techniques and self-editing took centre-stage for the first time. "We started tearing the material apart and rebuilding, re-editing and re-recording different parts in my home in early Autumn last year,” says Cully. “When we got them to a place we were happier with we went back into Start Together Studio with Ben McAuley to finalise the mixes to what they are now." Where AAAV proved a brazen statement of intent, Stains on Silence bounds forth as its feature-length comedown. What could have seen the band buckle became an opportunity for approaching things tabula rasa.

During its two-year transmutation, Cully, bassist Claire Miskimmin and guitarist Philip Quinn had a single aim for their fourth album: to make an old-fashioned record clocking in around 30 to 35 minutes in length that made the listener reach straight for repeat. From the Bang Bang bar-summoning swoon of opener '25’ and the submerged disco doom of ‘Haus Proud’ to the rapt, dub-leaning ‘Fragments of a Portrait’, Girls Names have excelled in their goal by forging an LP of synchronous nuance and defiance. Marked by the presence of drum machines and programming throughout, these eight masterfully-woven tales are once again commandeered by founder Cully, whose words, understated yet defiant, mine purpose and meaning from the mire ("I want to bathe again, I want to swim again / In a pool of twisting bodies, blackened gold."

Soul singer Billy Price teamed with award-winning guitarist and producer Kid Andersen to create RECKONING, Price’s 16th career recording. The sessions at Andersen’s Greaseland Studio in San José, California brought together a stellar collection of West Coast musicians and singers to support Price’s seasoned vocals. Andersen and drummer Alex Pettersen, both of Rick Estrin & the Nightcats,were joined on all tracks by Jim Pugh, veteran keyboard player for Robert Cray and Etta James among others, and the legendary Jerry Jemmott on bass. Onyx Collective is a steadfast part of New York, and the city is the glue that holds the group together. "New York's role in Onyx Collective is everything," explains Isaiah Barr, saxophonist, sometimes vocalist, and de facto leader of the band. "The names of people, the places, the street corners here are so legendary and historically prominent - it leaves a roadmap that we can walk through and a story for us to follow."

Onyx Collective's enigmatic nature is undeniably a part of its allure, but the force that truly propels the group is technical musical proficiency (the band's members attended New York's musical conservatories as kids) coupled with a reckless abandon. Dos Santos Logos Dos Santos is a quintet just 5 years on the Chicago scene but already well established as one of the city’s most potent, impactful performers. Staples describes as “a lost year,” Arrhythmia began on Christmas day 2016 when he was drawn to the studio to record the beginnings of “A new real,” the album’s hypnotic opener of glitchy electronic loops with a sly nod to disco. The second track “Memories of love” is indicative of Arrhythmia’s time-less experimentation and musical exploration. Side 2 of the album consists of a thirty-minute instrumental track “Music for ‘A year in small paintings.’” The piece began its evolution back in 2012, when filmmaker and long-time Staples collaborator, Claire Denis first saw the serial of works by the painter (and Staples’ partner) Suzanne Osborne and wanted to turn these 365 oil paintings of the sky into a film.

Staples’ first solo album in thirteen years, Arrhythmia is immersive and experimental, both recognisably the work of the Tindersticks’ frontman and simultaneously a stand-alone, unique piece of work. John’s recent solo records were instrumental, and mostly included works composed for film. While Bird Dog Dante contains a few pieces written for film, it is his first song oriented album in nearly a decade. Working while touring allowed him to bounce lyrics off his long time musical partner PJ Harvey. On “Sorry for Your Loss,” a song about their close friend Mark Linkous, it seemed only fitting to take it further and sing the song as a duet. The music of Brendon Anderegg is a hall of mirrors, multilayered and self-obscuring. Largely filtered through Mountains, his pioneering electronic project with Koen Holtkamp, Anderegg emerged as a solo artist in the late ‘90s. Since his emergence, Anderegg has become sought after for his film scoring and audio work with his Brooklyn-based studio, Telescope Audio, contributing to Emmy-nominated films 102 Minutes that Changed America, 9/11: The Days After for the History Channel, and working with clients from ESPN to Pitchfork.
