Floating Points’ short film and soundtrack, ‘Reflections – Mojave Desert’ – finds Sam Shepherd and his band in a thrilling sonic exploration of environment under an endless desert sky. It is the first in a planned series of environmental recordings

by Floating Points to be filmed and recorded at different locations around the world. The music of ‘Reflections’ mirrors the landscape:soaring and vast, dynamic and intimate, centered around two longer works and shorter pieces that create an immersive and seamless 27-minute experience.

Panduranga played organ, piano and sang with Ray Charles in the 1970’s where he was a star performer in Ray’s band. When he joined Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda’s Ashram in Agoura Hills, California, he became in essence a star performer there as well, though of course there were no ‘stars’. He made one record under his own name - a record so obscure it’s not listed on Discogs, nor found on the interweb? what?!

We think this record was remade as it was because Onyeabor didn’t have the parts to remake version 1, so he did it again with more electronics.

Earle’s latest album finds a songwriter and artist who is unflinching and unequivocal in his truth.

When writing this album, Earle focused on a different America— the disenfranchised and the downtrodden, the oppressed and the oppressors, the hopeful and the hopeless. ZOOSPA Terry Lewis once supplied for Janet Jackson. It’s what Rihanna should be asking her A&Rs for her next album: 32nd Century bass music with huge drums offering the propulsion and thrust that SpaceX is permanently seeking. “Fire Fly” is both gothic and gauzy, with pop synthesizers crushed into purple cosmic dust. The album was produced in layers, starting with basic tracks that sounded like futuristic R&B, but then deconstructed and assembled with vintage instruments—encoded with a new DNA that can’t be decrypted.

“Look Out” is a slice of post-trap futuristic R&B with a traditional hip-hop breakdown that almost recalls vintage turntablism. “Play” features exotic percussion and Mykki Blanco breathing fire like the ideal soundtrack to a reboot of Paris is Burning. “Ocean PPL” answers the question what would Aaliyah sound like in 2019. While “Real Truth” synthesizes jerkin’, ratchet, hyphy and dance music into something that resembles the avant-garde hip-hop beats that Edgar and Machinedrum have made for Vince Staples and Azealia Banks.

Yet the proceedings feel quintessentially different and skewed from anything past or present. 808 drum rolls are warped and bent. Old samples offer a gritty sound. The melodies incorporate ambient and new age synths. Effects from the ‘70s and ‘80s offer welcomed scuffs and creases. This is the world of J-E-T-S, a hybridization of different and distinct ideas, fearless, fast-paced and full of telepathic communication, but playful and without pretension. The future we’d dreamed about, not the one that we deserved.

J-E-T-S is Jimmy Edgar and Travis Stewart (Machinedrum), two of the past decade’s most versatile and protean producers, who have artfully glided through techno, house, IDM, bass, hip-hop, R&B, and pop without being pinned down to any one of them. Their only commitment has been to lucidly fuse the mutant strains of the past into the vaguely familiar present. No ideas are original, but they’re singularly creative artists who could only comfortably exist in modern chaos, the strange invented future.

Released on Innovative Leisure, Zoospa is fiercely cohesive but wildly varied. It’s a group effort casting a wide net of brilliant collaborators (DAWN, Mykki Blanco, KingJet, Rochelle Jordan, Tkay Maidza), but ultimately guided by the auteur visions of Edgar and Machinedrum. If many all-time great duos are guided by a competitive rivalry, J-E-T-S discard that sensibility to form a unified whole. If not in sound, they channel the two-heads-one-brain spirit of a more danceable Autechre or Outkast raised on the Belleville Three and first wave IDM. If you heard Timbaland and The Neptunes in 1999, this is what you’d expect pop music to sound like 20 years later.

The genesis of J-E-T-S fittingly dates back nearly two full decades. Machinedrum and Edgar first meet as teenagers on a pivotal trip to Miami, one of their first-ever gigs outside of the places they were raised (Edgar originally hails from Detroit, Machinedrum from rural North Carolina). They immediately bonded over a mutual love of Warp, Schematic Records, and Chocolate Industries. A tight friendship was forged when both lived in New York, but their first self-titled EP wouldn’t drop until 2012, by the time the pair had independently decamped to Berlin.

Eventually, they relocated to Los Angeles where their second EP was recorded in 2015.

The idea was always to record something bigger and more expansive, but it wouldn’t become a reality until Edgar headed up the coast, eventually settling and building a home studio in Portland. That’s where Machinedrum headed in the late summer of 2017 to cook up the tracks that eventually became Zoospa.

In the first three days of recording, the pair wrote four songs and expanded their conception of what they were capable of. The spontaneous alchemical ease with which they created could only come from being long-time kindred spirits. Zoospa is the product of a constant search to discover the new. Whenever a session became rote, they’d experiment with a unique format or a different process—whether it was spending an entire day making samples, tinkering with a modular synth, or processing and building drum kits.

The result is an album that sounds like little else: an organic creation of sacred rituals and wild, ungovernable energy.

In late 2017 Hyperdub released ‘Diggin In The Carts’, a compilation put together by Nick Dwyer and Kode9 of pioneering and rare Japanese video game music from the 1980s and 1990s. Since then, from Sonar Festival in Barcelona to Liquid Rooms in Tokyo, Kode9 has been touring a live audio-visual set in collaboration with visuals from anime legend Koji Morimoto, who also designed the artwork for the original compilation.

Finally, on this first new Kode9 EP since 2014, a handful of these remixes see the light of day. 9 rivets his 80/160bpm rhythms onto these classic 8bit and 16bit melodies, re-animating the Steve Reich-ian arpeggios of Soshi Hosoi, the grimelike horn fanfares of Yuzo Koshiro, the sour pads of Koichi Ishaibashi, and pitching Tadahiro Nitta down into a slow building, frantic low end grind.

It was recorded in an undisclosed location in the mountains over the course of two days in October 2018 and it contains five tracks lasting approximately 37 minutes. The music is freer…it was captured live in the studio, there are very few overdubs, and it's mega-organic. But you better listen for yourself.

Oh, and it’s called “Sauropoda" but don’t ask why. Think of it as a 2am Youtube rabbit-hole find, or that weird-looking soviet prog funk private press that you knew you should've bought the one time you came across it in the bins.

Most of "Sauropoda" comes from deep jams the band road-tested following the recording of 2018's breakthrough LP, "Polymood." In fact, it actually sounds more like a L’Eclair live show...blended with carefullycrafted dance floor grooves, last-minute studio fantasies, and fullyfaded late night jams. L'Eclair is all about the blending of things, and those things never sound the same twice; endlessly morphing like the human machine itself.

"Sauropoda" is the way L'Eclair sounds right now in proto-groove's golden age. But don't let your head get in the way and try too hard to classify this music. Instead focus on the the way "Sauropoda" makes you f.e.e.l. and take your time and make it last. That's what L'Eclair are up to!

Synkro returns to Apollo Records with a brand new album 'Images.'

Since his last album ‘Changes’ released in 2015 Synkro has been exploring more ambient influences and introducing new studio techniques. ‘Images’ is heavily inspired by the 80s-90s new age/ambient movement and artists such as Andreas Vollenweider, Jon Hassel & Marc Barreca (as well as some Japanese ambient techno influences such as Susumu Yokota & Ken Ishii's early work), most of the music uses a full analogue set up, moving further away from McBride's earlier sample-based work.

Following a long trip to Japan, McBride became "addicted" to vintage synths, and returned to his studio in Derbyshire to write the album. The twelve-track long player still contains his trademark rural soundscapes suspended in a rich seam of hooks and emotive synth arrangements but this time with focus on more weightless, looming melodies that extend throughout the album.

‘Images' distils the pure essence of the Synkro sound, a step in a different direction from some of his more beat led releases and an alternative from his collaborations with Liam Blackburn (as Akkord) or more recently with Arovane. Yet the music is still immediately recognisable and it’s an album in the old fashioned sense that is best consumed whole.

BROWNSWOOD RECORDINGS Brownswood Recordings is the independent record label founded by DJ, record collector and broadcaster Gilles Peterson. Started in 2006, it’s a platform for new artists and music creatives, as well as an outlet for established acts to do something different. Restless and open-minded, the label has championed independent, eclectic music from the UK and beyond.

Tipping a hat to West London broken beat as much as My Bloody Valentine, the album was co-produced by Malcolm Catto (of The Heliocentrics, who’s previously worked with Yussef Kamaal, DJ Shadow, and Madlib), who helped to distil down its bounty of ingredients into the record’s distinctive flavour. Tough, tight-programmed rhythms are washed over with fuzzy overtures, and the title track is the product of a studio session with a foundational drum & bass duo (credited under the covert alias of The Bleeding Edge). It’s the rare kind of record where the messy, in-between musical spaces are given a light to shine.

First discovered through the Gilles Peterson- and Brownswoodfounded Future Bubblers programme, Skinny has since made it onto Peterson’s iconic Brownswood Bubblers compilation series, performed and collaborated with fellow Future Bubbler Yazmin Lacey, and been tipped by the likes of Ghostpoet and James Lavelle. Praise has also come from The Observer, The Quietus and Huck, with previous singles “Spit / Swallow” and “I Just Wanna Be Your Prisoner” bumped up onto heavy rotation on BBC 6 Music’s A-List. Exurbian Quonset sticks up like a fork in the road — it was drawn together as MIKE prepared to be the last man from the old gang to leave SF, where he broke so many rules and new ground, working as a driver, a trimmer and a craftsman, cementing bricks into the foundation of the new centurion west coast rock and roll movement from his place alongside THEE OH SEES over the past decade. It’s dedicated to the woman who married him and taught him both words in the title of the album — exurbian and quonset — and who he’ll whisk away with to somewhere just like the title.

MIKE’s ouvre all the way down the line has been wedding silvery falsetto shiver-rock with sirens of noise, stand-up tin-pan pop singer performance peered at through a defocused lens. This is a genre, a thought process, a way of life and a full-grown branch of the rock and roll family tree. As many steps as it takes to get to perfect, it takes also to get to what you might call its opposite — a place comprised of equal degrees embodiment and expression. Underwater music, sung through gills, bubbling to the top for all of us on dry land to hear.

Exurbian Quonset is a pure solo record — MIKE created everything in the place, from voices and guitars to keys and space. It is pure pop music as well, as it has been played in dark, wet corners (and on the safety of cold, dry turntables) for the past half-century. Abstract-, post-, deconstuct- and autodestruct are as much a part of MIKE’s songs and singing as the melodic evocations of personal moods and private memories, dreams and fantasy, a PROUSTian matrix, stamped into antic untameter.

Chicago’s Distants are a young band but are decidedly old souls. Frontman Alex Angus spends time on their new EP “ii” complaining of aches and pains, a decaying body and just generally caring less. Like their 2018, self-titled 7”, their latest effort has more of throaty melodic punk that you expect from Midwest bands like Dillinger Four or Canadian Rifles, paired with a classic rock guitar sense that likely comes from Angus’ love of Van Halen.

Angus came to Chicago from the equally cold and miserable Grand Rapids, Michigan, the city where he met Distants bassist Zac and guitarist Benj both of whom had also made the move to the Windy City. Adding Andy, a native Ohioan, on drums solidified the band and meant that collectively their collective resume included bands from all over the Midwest like Annabel, Wormburner, Pinto, Brothers, What Gives? and the aforementioned Canadian Rifle.

Mammoth Penguins are a 3-piece indie pop powerhouse, showcasing the songwriting and vocal talents of Emma Kupa (Standard Fare, The Hayman Kupa Band) backed up by the noisiest rhythm section in indie pop Their first album, Hide and Seek, was released by Fortuna Pop! in 2015. Their follow-up release John Doe in 2017 was an ambitious concept album, exploring the feelings of loss and anger at a man who fakes his own death, only to return years later. It featured contributions from Haiku Salut’s Sophie Barkerwood and Alto 45’s Joe Bear, and expanded well beyond the 3-piece rock‘n’roll template, with washes of strings, synths and samples filling out and developing Kupa’s songwriting. Having had their ‘and now for something completely different’ moment, the band have brought that ambition and expanded palette to the production of this new release. The sound is big, bold and confident—with layers of guitars, backing vocals and keys all adding extra muscle—but maintaining Emma’s candid, heartfelt, confessional style of songwriting, and the jubilant power pop hooks that made the first record so special. This time around, classic themes of love, loss and conflict are (mostly) given a hopeful and optimistic spin that opposition is neither inevitable nor hopeless. For musical comparisons, think Land of Talk, and Philadelphia bands such as Swearin and Hop Along, but Kupa’s insight into the everyday and her ability to pen such relatable and honest missives means that, often, the best comparison for Mammoth Penguins’ music is with your own past.

By pressing play, Gregory Pappas, the man behind the moniker, requires your full attention. Waves of crashing sound swirl around viscus beats and cavernous staccato piano. Sound becomes broken to be reconstructed many times over. This is not the lovesick nor heartbroken OKADA we've witnessed before. This is a cathartic, disillusioned, OKADA, out the other side, worse for wear but building anew. The proximal six-minute opening to the album expounds destruction and disintegration, chaos and rebirth. The eye of this storm then disseminates wide allowing a female vocal breath to imply "again."

Have these destructive waves ultimately lead to pleasure? Or moments of rage that have eventually lead to acceptance? It is evident that there is a need, a yearning, an ache, that percolates to the surface on Life is but an Empty Dream. This, mind you, has all happened in the first ten minutes of the album. Pappas, as with all OKADA albums, has put every fiber of his being into the creative process. Such focus and shroud that hangs over the album lead us to assume Pappas' is in an antithetical state than the one apparent on 2016's ode to the blossoming relationship Love Telepathic. Cohen has spent the majority of her life immersed in music.

The daughter of jazz musician parents in Philadelphia, she was influenced at an early age by “The Philly Sound” of soul music songwriting/production duo Gamble and Huff. Getting her start playing her songs in coffee shops, Cohen came up through the disco/funk era of the late 70s and early 80s both as a songwriter and in her band Fun City, before venturing off into new wave in the mid-1980s with The Vels, then going on to play bass and vocals in grunge rock outfit Die Monster Die in the 1990s. Since then, her solo work has built on elements from all of these experiences, as evidenced in her unique and personal hybridized sound. Now, with ‘Artificial Fairytales,’ Cohen has locked into a mode of expression that is dancefloor-friendly, yet psychedelic and surreal enough to trip out to in any setting. While elements of these songs are extremely accessible, the deep variety of sonic coloring, dense layering, and creative use of synthesis work together to push the boundaries of status quo pop music.

‘Artificial Fairytales’ has the detail and presence of a studio album, but the fact that it was recorded at home reveals an extra dose of freedom, experimentation, and personality in it’s details. These 9 songs sit in the more glamorous zones of eighties club and R&B music, though laced with more modern cosmic tendencies through the delicious and stimulating blend of synthesizer, guitar, sax, flute, and drum machine.

Thematically, the album explores the internal fantasy life of “outsider” women characters, the idea of the Working Woman, and the stigma of the Old Maid. The title refers to the artificiality of the fairytales we are taught as children versus the cold realities of adult life, and the loss of innocence and imagination that can ensue. This dichotomy is explored through song in tales of daydreams, escapism, coping mechanisms, and the desire to elevate beyond our mundane existence. In many cases the music speaks directly to the female experience, and existing outside the traditional roles of women that many of us have grown up with, but are now finding archaic in our current society.

‘Artificial Fairytales’ explores the deception in the ideas we are taught as children, such as the “Cinderella” archetype of marrying the prince and living happily ever after. Though above all, it addresses the power and liberation that can be found in forging one’s own path in this world, and the fountain of youth that lies in nurturing creativity, individual thinking, and being open to imagination and dreaming.

ADIR L.C. BASKET STAR

On Basket Star, the well-traveled New York songwriter and studio savant Adir L.C. epitomizes a new breed of troubadour: one who not only writes songs as he passes through but arranges and records them on the move as well. He assembled the record like a postmodern folk Bard, collecting and orchestrating tracks, sounds, and creative contributions to share on his way. A savvy folk-pop craftsman with a track record, Adir coaxed Basket Star to life as he moved from one ad-hoc studio to another: Brooklyn apartments and practice spaces, an aunt’s house in Vermont, a studio outside Binghamton, New York, and more.

Adir’s baseline sound is a heady blend of millennial indie: a freak folk earthiness meets the big-din symphonics of “collective pop,” with accents of tin pan alley, jangle, soul, and street corner brass band. The living-as-producing recording process lends Basket Star an accretive complexity but one steered by the steady hand of a veteran auteur, courting the chaos for its surprises and its fertility (with a big assist from mix engineer Aaron Adams).

The indie jazz ballad “Best Version (of My Short Life)” kicks off the record on a lush and sophisticated note. The standout second song, “Big Bad” as well as the strong single candidate “Pink Cloud” find Adir back in his deepest pocket—jangling, achingly melodic indie folk-rock. The gently rocking acoustic title track demonstrates one of his most striking gifts as guitarist and singer—an easy swagger that makes all this flowing musical richness seem unconscious, almost accidental.

Like so many of the poets of the new century, Adir writes with gravity and serious moral purpose, but Basket Star never approaches preachy didacticism. Adir is too much of an offhand impressionist and street surrealist in the Stephen Malkmus tradition for that to happen. His inventory of self and society is carried along on a lax, permissive river of language, image, and snaky melody, and his quest is on perpetually shaky ground.

Sinkane is unique in that he is one of a very few artists that has a real, tangible, physical stake in our current cultural and political climate, and it shows in the music. For the new album Dépaysé (a French word meaning “to be removed from one’s habitual surroundings.”) Ahmed Gallab didn’t just write a few protest songs in the style of the familiar Sinkane sound. Rather, you can FEEL the difference, the change that has taken place in the art. The falsetto of the earlier records is almost entirely gone in favor of an aggressive, clearly stated tenor. There is almost nothing in the lyrics that is ambiguous or even difficult to understand, and even the music’s poppier moments are confrontational and bombastic. And while the new album is reflective of what the band has become musically, a wild raging force to be reckoned with live, it is at its heart about what real frustration feels like and what real change could require. It is by far the most personal, direct, unfiltered and raw Sinkane album.

Headed by singer/guitarist Freddy J IV, Left Lane Cruiser is a bona fide blues rock band from the American mid-west. This quartet from Detroit endured for more than forty years without a single change in personnel. Moreover, they charted hits at every stage in their lengthy career.

Although they are best remembered for the records they made at Motown in the Sixties, the Four Tops also had substantial success at such labels as ABC, Casablanca and Arista in subsequent decades. They even returned twice to Motown later in their career. All the while they remained a solid draw on the touring circuit, performing a hundred shows per year. The Four Tops consisted of lead singer Levi Stubbs, first tenor Abdul “Duke” Fakir, second tenor Lawrence Payton and baritone Renaldo “Obie” Benson. Working closely with the in-house songwriting and production team of Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier and Eddie Holland, the Four Tops cut some of Motown’s most memorable singles during the label’s mid-Sixties zenith. The list of classics recorded by the Four Tops during this fruitful period includes “Baby I Need Your Loving,” “I Can’t Help Myself,” “It’s the Same Old Song,” “Reach Out I’ll Be There,” “Standing in the Shadows of Love” and “Bernadette.” Between 1964 and 1988, the Four Tops made Billboard’s Hot 100 chart forty-five times and its R&B chart fifty-two times. Twenty-four of their singles made the Top 40, and seven of those entered the Top 10.

Justin Rutledge Passages

JUNO Award winning artist, Justin Rutledge returns with his new album, Passages. With a new band, Justin’s effortlessly well-wrought songs are encircled by ambient and rhythmic textures that provide fresh landscapes for his material. One of the key new band members is Rob Baker from the Tragically Hip. A friendship was formed during the creation of Rutledge’s 2014 album, Daredevil, a recording that paid tribute to the legendary Canadian band. “It was a real honour to have Rob in the studio with us, both musically and socially,” says Rutledge. “As a musician, he’s quite fearless and very intuitive when it comes to serving the song.”

Co-produced by Chris Stringer (Timbre Timbre, Elliot Brood, Rheostatics), mixed by Dan Burns (Taylor Swift, Chuck Prophet), and recorded in ten days at Union Sound in Toronto, the majority of Passages is recorded live off the floor, with minimal overdubs. “We had my friend Zac Rae [of Death Cab For Cutie] record some guitar and textures at his studio in Los Angeles,” says Rutledge, “but I really wanted to keep as much as we could from the original Toronto takes.” With Passages, Rutledge manages to retain his Americana roots while diving into more textured sonic landscapes. “Country and roots music will always be my first love,” says Rutledge, “but lately I’ve been listening to a lot of ambient instrumental music like Four Tet and Nils Frahm and I wanted to invite that influence into the way the songs on Passages are encircled.”

Conceptually, Passages centers around Rutledge’s recent marriage and sojourn living in Prince Edward County, an agricultural community on the shores of Lake Ontario—songs such as “Allisonville” and “Belleville Breakup” illustrate small town relationships and hardships. The title track, “Passages” is perhaps Rutledge’s most honest love song to date. “Like every other songwriter, I sure have written my share of love songs, but ‘Passages’ is perhaps the most consistent and clear of them all,” Rutledge says, “I have never been happier.” “Good Man” centres around the story of one of Rutledge’s relatives, who tried his best to outrun his inner demons, and “One Winter’s Day” depicts the turmoil of mental health from a first person point of view. Rutledge also revived some older songs for the album; three songs by his LA-based band Early Winters were recorded for the album, as well as “Boats,” penned by Rutledge and literary giant Michael Ondaatje.

Rutledge christened the album Passages because he feels as though he is shedding one life for another. “Fortunate things are surrounding me, and they are larger than myself,” says Rutledge. “The chapters of my life are becoming more interesting, and I can hear the pages turning when I close my eyes.”

Justin recently hit the road in March with Rob Baker, sharing new music from Passages and some old classics. Extensive international touring will commence in the summer and fall.

OVERVIEW Following the release of last year’s album Shape The Future, Nightmares on Wax returns with two new takes by longtime associate and DJ Ricardo Villalobos for standout album-cut ‘Back To Nature feat Kuauhtli Vasquez & Wixarika Tribe’.

Their debut single ‘Alternative Facts’ received regular radio play despite clocking in at a modest ten minutes in length and was hailed by Marc Riley as a ‘masterpiece’. They have done 3 sessions for Riley despite not having an extended release yet.

Since the release of their last album Tschak! the three piece has turned into a quartet with synth player Masha Piankova joining the band. And it was the success of their tours in the UK and Europe that subconsciously created a template and tone for where the band would go next with this new album; to capture that surging drive and throbbing assault of their pulverising live shows. “We decided to make this record more live and less electronic,”Sasha, singer and guitarist said. “We were thinking about how to make it sound more dynamic.” Masha’s introduction was a key one, with her replacing Sasha on synth bass whilst he moved over to second guitar to add a fuller and more impactful sonic crunch. The results brim with a magnitude and sense of coherence that belies some of the environment it was created in. Fuzz-driven guitars shift in engulfing waves, resembling shoegaze giants at their most ferocious, whilst elsewhere layered vocals stack on top of one another, weaving between pristine melody and augmented discordance. Whilst the glacial electronics and coldwave tendencies that soaked much of their previous album may be more absent here, this record pulses with an electronic tinge that bubbles more subtly under the surface of immersive guitars. The title Mu! has Japanese origins and comes from Zen Buddhism – something Sasha began to practise during past trying times - meaning both “no” and “nothingness” and the understanding that the acceptance of this concept can lead to enlightenment. “For me personally it’s a spiritual record,” he says. Although any sonic warbles of new age blandness couldn’t be further from the end results here. This is a cleansing record, no doubt, but one that washes over you with both brutal force and deft subtleness. With the completion of this album, it also wraps up a trio of records all connected via punctuation – Ngan! Tschak! Mu ! - but with one each distinct in its own tone and sense of evolution.

label’s inception. Optikk, Khaki Blazer’s third tape on Hausu Mountain, lays out an equally gleeful and damaged vision of post-plunderphonic 21st century beat-making, pushing his already skewed tracks into further unexplored depths of scattershot sensory overload and mutant collage construction.

Khaki Blazer’s tracks bounce and trip over themselves in loping rhythms defined by the hard chops and irregular grids of his wildly varied rhythmic structures. Stuttering drum programming, MIDI-core preset synth tones, and mangled vocal snippets latch into staccato grooves as bursts of found sound and skronky horn tones scramble their way into his chaotic networks of loops. While past releases found him sinking more regularly into patches of queasy arrhythmia, Modugno maintains a blistering pace through Optikk’s tracks, twisting high-BPM beat morsels into evolving blowouts rich with narrative disruptions. His own voice appears as a distorted human element within the mix, sounding out in the form of mumbled nonsense or hypeman-esque ad-libs about, for example, “getting high in a graveyard.” At the heart of his practice, he follows a sense of comic abandon and irreverence down bizarre production rabbit holes that could land as esoteric inside jokes without the benefit of his mesmerizing, hyperdetailed delivery.

Khaki Blazer draws inspiration from Chicago’s stable of Teklife producers, beat deconstructionists like Foodman and Fire-Toolz, and the goofier quadrants of the underground noise circuit centered around Northeast Ohio like Tiger Village and Aaron Dilloway. Contributions from this local scene pop into view within Optikk’s layered disorder, including performance artist Marcia Custer’s woozy vocalizations, Machine Listener’s garbled digital textures, and the spiraling saxophone anti-melodies of Steel Dangerous (Modugno’s Moth Cock bandmate Doug Gent). Following an internet-enabled trajectory traced out by the ever more detailed production styles of the international experimental electronics scene, Khaki Blazer’s work has progressed from the realm of full-on noise/improv into a fluid style of mosaic production splattered with vibrant textures and dizzying rhythmic activity.
