Written and recorded following the departure of bassist Eric Claridge, Any Day is The Sea And Cake’s first album recorded as the trio of Sam Prekop, Archer Prewitt, and John McEntire. Since the release of their last album (2012’s Runner), the band have, in addition to shows, been creatively very busy: Prekop focusing on solo modular synthesizer and soundtrack work, including an acclaimed collaboration with artist David Hart; McEntire’s recording and touring with Tortoise, and maintaining a busy schedule as a recording engineer and producer; and Prewitt’s work as a cartoonist and illustrator, in addition to duo performances with Prekop. The band, still actively performing with bassist Douglas McCombs (Tortoise, Brokeback), were inspired by the challenge of composing as a smaller unit.

Any Day captures The Sea And Cake’s distinctive aural alchemy, melding longing melancholy with hopeful excitement. In other hands the combination seems impossible, but for The Sea And Cake, it’s effortless.

Simian Mobile Disco MURMURATIONS

Simian Mobile Disco return to Wichita Recordings for their fifth full-length studio album,Murmurations, a thrilling ride, as perfectly pitched for headphones as it is for club soundsystems. The album features vocals from celebrated Hackney-based collective, The Deep Throat Choir (Bella Union) and is themed around the flight patterns of flocks of birds (hence the album’s title), and the stunning emergent behaviors that appear within them. SMD began by swapping some production and melodic ideas with the choir before heading into the studio to capture their vocals, some in more standard “song” formats (“Hey Sister”, “Defender”, and first single, “Caught In A Wave”), while other songs are built around drones and tones created by the choir, directed by James and Jas. The results were intense, as Jas says, “listening to them moving their voices around a tone, altering the timbre, making chords, was like working with an incredible new synthesiser”. One of the leading producers and instrumentalists in Brazilian music, Alexandre Kassin has produced roughly 100 records for singers, including Marisa Monte and Bebel Gilberto, recorded with Sean O’Hagan (Stereolab, High Llamas) and made a full album based on Nintendo Game Boy sounds. He has played bass for Caetano Veloso’s live shows and conceptualized the Orchestra Imperial band.

His new album, Relax, is rooted in dreams and surrealism, yet grounded enough to reach listeners where they are. Across 11 tracks, Kassin flirts with Latin rhythms, Brazilian pop, and straight-ahead soul, using this varied stylistic array to tell imagined tales of death, drug usage, politics and fate. There’s a dichotomy to Relax, with Kassin’s arrangements often feeling bright and danceable, yet with incredibly sullen themes. It’s a record that speaks directly to the yin and yang of everyday life, and the uncertainty that comes with simply existing.

The Good Is A Big God, by singer, composer and multi-instrumentalist Domenico Lancellotti, features contributions from Nina Miranda, Moreno Veloso, Pedro Sá and Sean O’Hagan. Son of composer Ivor Lancellotti, Domenico has collaborated with various MPB (Música Popular Brasileira) names such as Adriana Calcanho]o, Marcos Valle, Caetano Veloso and Fernanda Abreu, and also participates in several projects such as Orchestra Imperial, the +2’s (with Moreno Veloso and Kassin) and Ritmistas.

A collection of reflective samba partially inspired by a trip taken to a Brazilian national park called The Serra dos Órgãos, The Good Is A Big God first began to take shape when Domenico was asked to take part in an artistic collaboration in the city of London during the 2012 Summer Olympics. There, he reunited with Sean O’Hagan after previously meeting during a show that paid homage to Tropicália. Before he took off for London, Domenico sent O’Hagan a few musical sketches he’d done on guitar; by the time the Brazilian made it to the U.K., O’Hagan had string arrangements to accompany Domenico’s music. Domenico added lyrics to some of these songs once he returned to Brazil and with help from friend and label mate Kassin, and additional assistance from O’Hagan, the record was finished.

One can hear a sense of isolation and oneness with nature when listening to The Good Is A Big God. It’s the type of art that arrives in a calming stream of thought and is a much- needed respite from the rigors of everyday life.

The twentieth century itself doubtlessly fueled massive, star-bound inquiries into the nature and make-up of how we plot our place in the universe, radically turning the unknown into the unarguable - and yet, the pull of the unknown remains, perhaps even multiplied.

Similarly, Our Solar System's third full-length via Beyond Beyond is Beyond is perhaps their most transparent and revealing, unobstructed by anything beyond the group's now-masterful commitment to eclipsing the expected. On "Origins," the music is at once rapturous, intense and mysterious. Despite its titles, the album is easily enjoyed as the sum of two side-length outings, and "Origins" never plays like anything less than a cohesive whole.

The opening half of Side A ("Vulkanen") offers an almost animal assessment of the power possessed by Our Solar System - with thunderous drums, relentless atop crashing waves of sound, for a result more primitive than industrial, even with the electronic squalls that mercilessly cut and slice their way through the sonic soup, eventually merging into a deep, gloomy, horn-fed three-note dirge of a refrain. In the aftermath, the listener is likely to find themselves well-enveloped in Our Solar Systems pleasantly conflicting jazz-psych-rock-or-not charms, if not fully cocooned by them once and for all. With considerable ambience this opening suite finds its balance in a land with similar topographic features to that explored by Cluster, Harmonia or "Fly United"-era Amon Duul II (and with no skimping on the flute here, either).

Comparatively speaking, Side B - from "Babalon Rising" to "Monte Verita" - is the slightly more serene of "Origins" offerings, though not a gram less compelling. For the first time on "Origins," the band is unmistakably upbeat and, it must be said, s-w-i-n-g-i-n-g, practically levitating across the sea of tranquility and toward the album's phenomenal finish.

Gods, spirits, invocations, planets, presences and the gaps between - what does it all mean?

Easy answers don't appear on "Origins," though your ears will likely beg for another spin to at least ask the right questions. Investigate this fully and find your place in Our Solar System.

Back in November last year, psych-rock overlords King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard announced they’d be giving away ‘Polygondwanaland’ - their fourth LP of the year - for free and for everyone to do with as they please. Naturally, it was pretty inevitable that it was to be given the Fuzz Club treatment. Fuzz Club have created a must for audiophiles and record collectors alike. The lacquer was cut at half-speed by engineer-extraordinaire Miles Showell at Abbey Road, which means that every tiny little detail of King Gizzards’ wonky, hedonistic sonic prowess has made its way into the record’s grooves. Her first solo outing, 1997’s In the Valley, was a major installment in the recorded legacy of experimental string music, a dense exploration of drones and resonance. The Fleeting Skies followed in 2004 with a full-band recording of lush psychedelic folk-rock. NNA is honored to present ‘The Fool,’ the debut album from NYC-based duo LEYA. Violinist Adam Markiewicz (The Dreebs) and harpist Marilu Donovan have succeeded in creating an incredibly original sound for their project. They combine modernity and antiquity with their chosen instruments by taking ideas from contemporary pop and experimental music, and seamlessly integrating them into classical instrumentation and moods.

Utilizing a combination of normal and detuned intervals together with ethereal layered vocals, the resulting sound of LEYA is unmistakable and haunting. It is both ancient and singular in tone, but remains open to the influences and ideas of the modern day underground in it’s structural simplicity.

LEYA aims to deconstruct the traditional connotations of the harp and violin by luxuriating in the deviant juxtaposition of ugly/beauty. These two stringed instruments are most commonly associated with classical beauty, but by altering their sound through unorthodox tunings and techniques, Donovan and Markiewicz are able to mine the depths of their darker, more unsettling capacities. The tuning system created for Donovan’s harp is specific to the project, and was discovered by chance.

Rather than being driven by scientific or conceptual intentions, this tuning is chosen based on it’s sound alone, giving LEYA a defined identity that embraces human instinct and imperfection.

Furthermore, the duo achieves a deeper contrast by seeking to write pop songs using classical instruments and techniques in a very non-traditional format. The song structures are left open and sparse in the spirit of creating clear and simple sonic terrain that is meant to grab the listener emotionally, rather than forcing them to analyze the material. The staccato harp pluckings are complemented by long, sustained notes and chords from the violin, creating a dynamic foundation of strings for the vocals to fill in the cracks and crevices. In this sense, the dual vocals are used almost as a textural element or third instrument, where the way the words actually sound takes precedence over the lyrical content. The slow, drawn-out compositional pace of these songs brings them closer to “ambient” territory, enhancing the evocative qualities of the instruments while floating carefully between eerie dissonance and the angelic higher stratospheres of transcendent beauty.

The latter half of ‘The Fool’ brings in a series of guest collaborators from the modern American experimental underground, showing the range of experience and influence that informs LEYA’s sound. Eartheater, PC Worship, and Sunk Heaven each contribute their own signature style to the tracks, but also adapt remarkably well to LEYA’s sound world, due to the open, yet firmly distinct, sonic identity established by Markiewicz and Donovan. Price is best known as the lead singer and songwriter behind the acclaimed New England-based band Winterpills, but his CV stretches far back into the late 80s and draws on jagged art-rock, lo-fi pop, power pop, dance-noise, flowery brit-folk, and hooky shoe gaze. Last year, Price digitally released 12 albums’ worth of this wide-ranging back-catalog- a project that took a year and half to remix, remaster, and in some cases reimagine. ‘Ancient Lights’ is the debut album from Uniting of Opposites,

the new musical venture from Tim Liken, Clem Alford and Ben

Hazleton, bringing to life a melting pot of cultures and

inspiration; using new technology as an opportunity to explore

and merge aspects of jazz, electronica and traditional Indian

musical styles.

The band was established when, within the myriad forms of jazz,

Hazleton met Alford and begun studying the classical Indian

tradition in order to “open [his] ears to new melodic and rhythmic possibilities”. As a lover of all types and styles of music, Liken’s involvement fused together their collective musical journeys, creating Uniting of Opposites.

Coming from a DJ/producer background, Tim Liken started making music in 1995, setting up one of the UK’s original garage labels, Ice Cream Records, later spawning the monikers Double 99 and Tim Deluxe. Clem Alford’s musical journey began when he purchased a sitar and a Jayasri Banerjee record before hitchhiking to India in 1968 to be taught sitar by Pandit Sachindra Nath Saha (Banerjee’s father). Over the past five decades Alford has recorded for EMI and collaborated with western musicians and pop groups to film composers, including Amancio D’Silva, John Williams, John Mayer, John Dankworth and Hemmant Kunar. Having been named ‘Young Jazz Musician of the Year’ in 2003, Ben Hazleton is predominantly a jazz double bass player and has played with many of the British Jazz greats, performing regularly with The Tony Kofi Quartet and The Jonathan Gee Quartet.
