“I got a right to say FUCK YOU!!!” is how the new album from veteran guitarist Marc Ribot’s trio Ceramic Dog starts off, with Ribot howling in anger at corruption, tyranny, life in general, and nothing in particular. If you’ve got a serious case of outrage fatigue, Ceramic Dog’s explosive cocktail of balls-to-the-wall abandon, chameleonic disregard for style constraints, political commentary, and absurdist humor is just the shot in the ass (or kick in the arm?) you might need. In fact, Ceramic Dog’s new album — whose title:YRU Still Here? is directed in equal parts at themselves, the commander in chief, and the listening public -- arrives just in time to remind us that now is a moment when anger is not only necessary, and unavoidable, but also good for houseplants.

YRU Still Here? careens from punk to funk to flamenco to surf to rock ‘n roll — all turned on their heads and smudged, allowing us to imagine an alternate history where punk icons Jello Biafra and Ian MacKaye fronted no-wave lounge bands on alternate Tuesdays at the Teaneck New Jersey Holiday Inn.

Thanks in no small part to the fire, brimstone, and dextrous facility summoned by kindred spirits Shahzad Ismaily (Secret Chiefs 3, Will Oldham) on bass and drummer Ches Smith (Xiu Xiu, Secret Chiefs 3, Trevor Dunn’s Trio Convulsant), YRU Still Here? comes to the table armed with more than just sloganeering rhetoric. Alongside his monumental career forging his peerless guitar style with the likes of Tom Waits, John Zorn, the Lounge Lizards, etc, Ribot has also worked for decades as a tenant union, labor, and artist rights activist, where he mastered the agit-prop skills used to such dazzling effect on sure-fire hits such as “Fuck La Migra” and “Muslim/Jewish Resistance.”

“Pennsylvania 6 6666” documents Shahzad’s experiences growing up Muslim and Outrageous in Danville Pennsylvania, where “all the children are insane”: rendering these lamentable memories in a cool vaguely Latinoid jazz style all their own (while providing guffaws for Satanists and Glenn Miller fans)!!! By way of explanation, Ribot comments: “Yes, we too are subject to the post-modern condition, although we actually see it as a kind of psoriasis.”

As much as it is a rallying cry, though, YRU Still Here? also further consecrates Ribot’s 10 years of music making with Ismaily and Smith.

Referring to them as his “musical conscience” and to the band as a “family...although not always in a good way”. Ribot comments wryly: “Even after all the playing I’ve done, there’s something about this group that still manages to shock me.”

DOC WATSON LIVE FROM CLUB 47 LP RELEASE DATE: APRIL 27, 2018 CD RELEASE DATE: FEBRUARY 9, 2018 Long acknowledged as America’s premier folk guitarist, Arthel Lane “Doc” Watson was born in what was then the tiny rural community of Deep Gap, North Carolina in the heart of the Blue Ridge mountains on March 3, 1923. Surrounded by music and musicians, Doc and his siblings grew up listening to hymns, murder ballads and down home string band music, all of which would later find places in his own repertoire.

In 1953, Doc formed a honky tonk dance band with pianist Jack Williams called Jack Williams and his Country Gentlemen. Their repertoire consisted primarily of rockabilly, country and western, pop standards and square dance tunes, and Doc played electric guitar in this ensemble. To fill occasional square dance requests, Doc learned to flatpick fiddle tunes on the guitar, as Joe Maphis had done in the 1930s. Unlike his contemporaries Chet Atkins and Merle Travis, who started their professional careers playing acoustic guitars and later switched to electric, Doc began on electric and later made the transition to acoustic with the advent of the folk revival of the Sixties.

Although he continued to work with Williams playing country and pop music, Doc never stopped playing traditional mountain music with his family and friends at home. These included Clarence “Tom” Ashley, Doc’s father-in-law Gaither Carlton, and two other neighbors, fiddler Fred Price and guitarist Clint Howard, all of whom would travel and record with Doc in the future. It was in these comfortable home surroundings that Doc was first discovered and recorded by folklorist Ralph Rinzler and collector and discographer Eugene Earle, who were on a collecting trip through North Carolina looking for traditional artists to record. Once these field recordings were released, as “Old Time Music at Clarence Ashley’s Vol. 1” (and later Vol. 2) on Folkways Records, Doc’s reputation grew, and he soon began playing for enthusiastic urban audiences farther from home. Rinzler presented Doc in concert in New York City for his organization, The Friends of Old Time Music, in March of 1961, and booked a series of follow-up dates which included a stop in Cambridge at the Club 47 in February of 1963, where the present recordings were made.

About Nandi Rose Plunkett writes, records and performs under the name Half Waif. Her music is a richly layered collage of blinking electronic soundscapes, echoes of Celtic melodies and the elegiac chord changes of 19th-century art music. Half Waif selfreleased two EPs and two albums before joining the Cascine family in 2017, when she released the critically acclaimed form/a EP. In the same year, Cascine reissued her 2016 breakthrough Probable Depths, giving the album its first ever vinyl pressing. Half Waif also spent 2017 on near constant tour, supporting artists such as Julien Baker, Iron & Wine, Land Of Talk and Mitski. This year, Half Waif will release her latest body of work: a new album titled Lavender. Nandi shared the following on the album: Lavender is so named for Nandi’s grandmother Asha – a nod to the lavender she would pluck from her garden and boil in a pot on the stove. “The first time I noticed her doing this, it struck me as a kind of magic: the small black cauldron bubbling with a piece of the earth,” said Nandi. “She did it to make the house smell good, but I believe it was also a ritual of purification, clearing out any shadows that may have tried to creep into the old English home she’d lived in, alone, for fifty years. When I wrote and recorded Lavender, my grandmother was alive, and though she wasn’t ill at the time of her sudden death in September, it was obvious her life – after 95 years – was drawing to a close. As a result, themes of aging and collapse are all over this album.”

Lavender is an elegy to time, the pilgrimages we take, and the ultimate slow plod towards our end. It is an examination of the way we fracture, inside ourselves and inside our relationships – the fissures that creep along the structures we build, the tendency towards disintegration. We face many endings in our lives, on the path toward that unfathomable yet omnipresent ultimate Ending. Break-ups and divorces, marriages and the estrangement of the self, hard times and bittersweet relief, steep precipices that rise up beyond our control over and over again. These endings are markers of time and growth, small personal apocalypses that pockmark our days. And yet there is more to come when the terror subsides; even the night itself – that great darkness – must end and give way to new light. Lavender is a talisman to hold in the midst of that uncertainty, to heal and remind ourselves that it’s not over. It’s not ending yet.

The first seeds of German rock and experimental electronic music were planted in 1968, as students and workers in Paris, Prague, Mexico and throughout the world demonstrated against mainstream society, the war in Vietnam, imperialism and bourgeois values. The birth of a counter-culture, drug experimentation and social change expanded musical worlds. Germany experienced its own cultural revolution fuelled by these worldwide student and worker revolts and by a generation’s desire to rid itself of the guilt of war.

German rock and experimental electronic music grew out of this worldwide counter-cultural revolution of 1968.

The objectives were to create new music, ‘free’ from the past, many German youth turning their back on mainstream society. From the opening of the first collective/cooperative, Kommune 1, in Berlin, to the formation of the Baader-Meinhof terrorist group and the bombings, kidnappings and killings of the Revolutionary Armed Forces (RAF), young Germans sought out new values and a lifestyle outside of ‘the system’.

These cooperative and communal experiences led to a number of new collective German bands forming such as Amon Düül, Faust, Can (all featured here) and others and these ideals drove this new movement. A music that gave seed out of the cultural ‘nothingness’ that young Germans felt as a consequence of Germany’s role in the Second World War. A generation who grew up stifled by the recent history of Nazi atrocities, the guilt of their parents’ generation and their disillusionment at the reintegration of old Nazis into mainstream society.

Influenced equally by the electronic experimentalism of Stockhausen, the progressive rock of Pink Floyd and the black American jazz and soul music played at the occupying armed forces bases, young German artists seamlessly created out of this a new unique music with its own unique identity.

VARSITY PARALLEL PERSON Varsity formed in 2013 when several Chicago musicians gathered for a “salon night” party where friends shared stories and songs. Singer and keyboardist Stephanie Smith liked the sound of guitarists Dylan Weschler and Pat Stanton, and invited them to perform with her. The trio soon became a quintet, later adding Jake Stolz on drums and his brother, Paul Stolz, on bass. The band began playing shows around Chicago and, in April 2014, self-released their first EP, Thanks for Nothing, after recording it one weekend in the basement of Smith’s parents’ home.

Since then, Varsity has found success with its lo-fi indie-pop sound featuring, in the words of one music critic, “winsome vocals, chiming guitars and peppy drums.”

The band balances the demands of writing and recording music with touring and working fulltime jobs. Besides sharing bills with performers like American Wrestlers, Alvvays, Courtney Barnett, The Hold Steady and Car Seat Headrest, Varsity has produced a number of digital releases—often two complementary songs at a time in what they call digital 7”s—that have h earned rave reviews and a growing audience.

CUTS, composer and filmmaker Anthony Tombling Jr, is set to release music from his experimental film ‘EXIST’ for the first time. This April’s dual release of EPs ‘EXIST 1’ & ‘EXIST 2’ on Village Green will precede a debut album on the label.

Inspired by a poem by H.P. Lovecraft, ‘EXIST’ explores night terrors and sleep paralysis. The 40-minute film, described by CUTS as a “existential journey into nowhere” features narration from cult graphic novelist Alan Moore (Watchmen, V For Vendetta, DC Comics, 2000AD). Since the film was premiered at Dark Outside, the unique 24 hour site specific festival in the Galloway Forest Dark Skies Park, in 2015; the music hasn’t been made available until now.

“In 2012 I was involved in a car crash and the resulting shock manifested itself in experiencing sleep paralysis for the first time. I was inspired to try and recreate some of those experiences through music and film. It made me view my approach to music in a different way, Exist is a collection of those visions.

With all CUTS material I try to take influence from the non-musical, for instance an abandoned space. There is a stillness with places that are in slow decay. I try to imagine what that would sound like? In taking influence from things outside of music I feel my own music becomes less tied to comparison. As a composer working this way has been deeply cathartic.”

Magazine with The 405 noting “clear influences from the powerful build of Mogwai tracks to the My Bloody Valentineesque use of distortion and distant vocals”. On CUTS ‘EP1’ released by Invada, The Quietus wrote “the buzz and hum of fed-back electronics get underscored by the undoubtedly sinister-feeling creep of industrial percussive mechanisms”.

Tigue ‘Strange Paradise’ Vinyl LP Brand new full-length album from NYC-based experimental percussion trio New York City-based percussion trio Tigue’s Strange Paradise is a collection of hypnotic compositions rendered in ecstatic complexity. Radiant, affirming and occasionally uncanny; the sound is an intricate patchwork of tones where instrumental lines and textures, like uniquely patterned autonomous organisms, shift in and out of alignment to produce a vibrating landscape. The compositions on Strange Paradise require a mode of “extended listening” – slow gradations of change between tone worlds of ambience, rhythm, minimal, and angularity.

The music on Strange Paradise is constructed through human relationships, avoiding direct digitization. Strange Paradise manifests as a monolithic, symphonic collection of friends, timbres, concepts, landscapes, patterns and objects. A clear hark back to the hard-core minimalism of the mid 1970’s – reimagined through a vivid lens of high energy percussive fringe fighters. As instrumental music tends to be, Strange Paradise is best described visually. At times, fluorescent orbs emerge from a blurred fog of cassette tape loops, guitar drones and synthesizer swells, punctuated by an intricate array of meticulous grooving patterns from drumkits, shakers and found objects. In other parts, unexpected objects take on a lyrical role, spinning miniature melodies out from school bells, aluminium rods and cymbal scrapes. It is ritualistic in nature, and the presence of each performer on the album can be felt, as well as heard... a synthetic flavor produced through surprisingly human means.

With all of a humanity reduced to a genome, who’d a thunk there’d be some sweet, folksy music being made in a remote corner of the world that almost no one had heard of until youtube came along?

This is a whole community of musicians from the heart of Africa playing guitar in a way most of us have never seen or thought possible—unless you happened to be following a handful of viral internet videos. And if you were and happened to read the comments below the videos, you would have seen the question: “Where can I buy this music?” The answer is: on Piranha Records on 27 April 2018 !

It‘s like the old Robert Johnson story - when he sold his soul to the devil at that Rosedale crossroads. Only this time the crossroad is on the outskirts of the Kalahari desert, and there‘s no devil around, at least as far as we know. Just a crazy record label looking to bring these artists indoors to record.

Head of The Vital Record, David Aglow, had no idea what he was in for when, back in 2009, he received an email from a friend with a youtube link. He thought it might be spam and almost didn’t bother to click. But he did and discovered a treasure trove of “Botswana Music Guitar.” Played in an eccentric style with a depth of expression rivaling any genre of music, this is folk from the dusty outskirts of the Kalahari Desert—a community of African country blues masters with a totally original technique. The left hand reaches up and over the neck of the guitar, instead of from behind and underneath.

David Aglow was so enthralled that—long story short—he searched for and found the person who recorded and posted these clips—Johannes Vollebregt—aka Bokete7 and proposed giving the artists a proper release. Then he found the artists and recorded and recorded and recorded.

It‘ll be out on audiophile 180g vinyl and as a digital release as „I‘m not here to hunt Rabbits” on Piranha Records in co-operation with The Vital Record this spring. The line-up of the originators who made the first cut: Ronald Moipolai - „Ronnie“ / Molefe „Western“ Lekgetho / Sibongile Kgaila / Annafiki „Anna“ Ditau / Oteng Piet / Solly Sebotso / Batlaadira Radipitse / Motlogelwa „Babsi“ Barolong.

Their stories – told eloquently, enthrallingly and vividly in a most entertaining 36 page color booklet – are worth the retail price alone. The music even more so – deeply heartfelt, masterfully executed, totally relaxed, self-assured and natural.

This is a case of music lovers, field recordists and publishers joining forces to shed some light on a community of musicians more than worthy of international attention.

It’s reminiscent of the field recordings that John and Alan Lomax did together with Leadbelly in the Deep South almost a century ago. Or the Hugh Tracey recordings of George Sibanda in the 50s from nearby Zimbabwe.

Like all DJ Koze records, Knock Knock exists outside of trend and influence. In fact, Knock Knock is a step further beyond: absolutely every single thing here, from grooves to voices to handclaps, is otherworldly and unique. Which is not to say it is utter alien abstraction. There is still disco, there is still soul, there is still techno, there is still hip hop, there is still psychedelia – there are even wafts of easy-listening and lost crackly thrift store record memories – but though it may sound familiar, it never does what your brain thinks it's going to do. More than ever before on Koze's records, there are fascinating, individualist and well-known voices throughout Knock Knock. Each of them is rendered strange, drawn into a different reality. Bon Iver's ghostly hymnals on 'Bonfire' are very recognizably his own, but the way they twist and merge with synthetic sounds until choir and computer are writhing around one another in bliss are something else. The everunique Róisín Murphy, on two stunning tracks, becomes a cyborg funk diva. Speech from Arrested Development delivers luscious and lazy R&B-funk on 'Colors of Autumn', but Koze's warping bass, dubwise echo and alien nature sounds take it to an alternatedimension tropical landscape. Kurt Wagner of Lambchop is a vocoder bohemian, Sophia Kennedy is a sci-fi Weimar cabaret star and José González is a holographic projection from an old film of the South Sea Islands. On it goes, nothing is real, everyone is an inhabitant of Koze-world.

And that's what is crucial here. Koze is a world-maker, Knock Knock is far and away his greatest statement of that. You don't get to choose how you hear his music – you enter his world or you don't, that's it. And that's why individual influences as demonstrated so strikingly in his DJ-Kicks mix in 2015 right up to the disco and pop leanings of his Extended Disco Version of Låpsley's 'Operator', a track that you couldn't move for in the summer of 2016, are so pertinent. Knock Knock is an album that came together slowly and steadily, his working processes arcane and mysterious in their steady accumulation of sound and inspiration. It's so complete and bursting with detail and consistency in every way that you'd swear it was meticulously planned (but there was no master plan) to create a definitive artifact: the record itself decided when it was ready. And now it is ready, the most perfectly constructed portal into that other world, you had better be ready too!

“An appetite for the unknown" - Daniel Lanois No collaboration is unlikely when the end goals are the same. A meeting of two artists who illustrate different corners of the musical landscape, come together to create a new statement that takes their collective strengths to higher elevations and encompasses new terrains.

So it is on the first collaborative journey of Canadian musicians Venetian Snares and Daniel Lanois. What started as mutual respect for one another’s work, led to several years of a creative germination resulting in an eight-track full-length exploration released May 4th on Timesig/Planet Mu. The path began in 2014, after Lanois reached out to Venetian Snares (Aaron Funk) as a fan of his work. The project started to take root in Summer of 2016, after Funk hung around Toronto between shows. Taking his gear to Lanois’ studio, the two began to play for the first time together in what would prove to be a formative moment in their creative journey together.

Phase of the Moon Phase Of The Moon is the new offering from Toronto singer-songwriter Matthew Barber on the Outside Music label. Following his Gary Louris-produced Big Romance (2014) and Juno-nominated collaboration with sister Jill on The Family Album (2016), Phase Of The Moon marks Barber’s confident return to producing himself, with veteran Ken Friesen (The Tragically Hip, Carly Rae Jepsen, Gordon Lightfoot) handling the engineering duties.

The songs on Phase Of The Moon were mostly written in a tiny studio apartment in Paris where Matthew and his wife spent a month in early 2017. It came with a small upright piano and had thin walls, which could explain why piano songs sung in deeper, hushed tones feature prominently on the record. The winter sojourn in Europe provided a welcome respite from the all-consuming media madness back home, and coupled with a steady diet of existentialist reading material, served to foster a mood of almost contented melancholy that seeped into the songs and runs throughout the record. “‘The Painter’ was written after a moving visit to a nearby art museum,” says Barber. “‘Hanging On The Line’ begins as a paean to modest values and morphs into a loose commentary on our wayward modern civilization. The title track ‘Phase Of The Moon’ is probably the most personal song on the record about the struggle to overcome setbacks beyond our control. ‘All In A Dream’ is how I sometimes feel when I’m traveling, putting reality on hold for a little while.”

The performances that make up the record were captured over three days in the historic Almonte Town Hall in eastern Ontario, with its ghosts, high ceilings and Steinway grand piano setting the scene for the recording. The record was thoughtfully mixed by Darryl Neudorf (Blue Rodeo, Neko Case, Sarah McLachlan, Blue Rodeo) at his barn in Mono, Ontario, and the album art was made by Toronto artist Heather Goodchild.

Last year the Buttertones put out Gravedigging, but on their newest Midnight In A Moonless Dream, they’re digging deeper and discovering something dark.

If Gravedigging felt like an oversaturated spaghetti-western desertscape, Midnight is much more biting—music made for the swampland that spit out Australia’s mad Scientists, or for the Mickey Spillane night city where the Cramps met all those garbagemen and werewolves. Or maybe the Buttertones are heading for an even more primal place: “Show more teeth / Bite your way in,” sings guitarist Richard Araiza. “You’re back in the jungle again!”

They’d started in 2011 as a trio of music-school misfits. Araiza, bassist Sean Redman and drummer/multi-instrumentalist Modesto ‘Cobi’ Cobiån all wanted to pursue something more than boring industry adequacy, and soon locked together their current five-piece line-up with sax player London Guzman and guitarist Dakota Boettcher. With Gravedigging, they leapt from backyard parties to back-to-back tours, including their first trip to Europe, and scored a Coachella slot for 2018. It was a year that made them sharper, stronger, even more sophisticated. And when they were ready to record, they were ready to do things differently.

Midnight was made in two flash sessions at Long Beach’s Jazzcats studio with Gravedigging producer Jonny Bell, whose genre-smashing record collection and appetite for experimentation made for a perfect match. (He’s really a guru, they say.) What was supposed to be a six song EP during the summer of 2017 bloomed into a full-length by the end of that December. Midnight was like a trust fall, the band says—leap of faith after leap of faith, cut to tape as it happened by a tight and tour-tested band. On this album, they’d decided, everything would be new—not just new sounds, like their first-ever string section, but new ways of working together and writing together. They worked on trust and instinct, by feeling instead of thinking. If it worked, they’d keep it, and if it didn’t, they’d burn it and move on. Gravedigging played like the soundtrack to a good heist movie, but Midnight was like the true story itself—a perfect and intricate crime, executed by a crew of professionals under cover of night.

On the vicious “Winks and Smiles,” the spirit of sax and violence that powered cult-classic L.A. punkers the Deadbeats suddenly comes to life; on the starked-out “You and Your Knife” and fog-and-smoke follow-up “Brickhead,” you’ll hear the cryptic echoes of Suicide or Bauhaus. It’s music made for dancers but also for doomed romancers, and you’ll hear it best on the pocket symphony “Eros,” which closes the album with Lynch-ian vision and power—here Araiza sings with almost startling passion, and if you don’t linger on the idea of graveyard angels in perpetual embrace, it’s a love song for the ages. This is the strong stuff, the kind that comes in an unmarked bottle and burns when it hits.

Beyond being the brains behind Bottle Tree – the future funk suite we released in April of 2017 that was named “#1 Best Album of the Year” by London’s EZH Magazine (c/o founder Tina Edwards) and on NPR’s Sound Opinions (c/o producer Ayana Contreras) – he was a core component of Makaya McCraven’s Highly Rare and a cornet cameo on Jaimie Branch’s Fly or Die (both of which were included in the New York Times’s “Best Albums of 2017”). Suffices to say, Ben LaMar Gay is nearly omnipresent in the current zeitgeist of progressive jazz sounds sprouting from Chicago.

Knowing how tirelessly Ben works and how, perhaps more than anybody we’ve encountered, he embraces music-making purely for the joy of the process, it was not surprising to learn he had been low-key self-producing recordings between his residences in Chicago & Brazil for the last 7 years, and had amassed 7 albums that were sitting totally finished, never released, on hard drives at his house. And knowing how dynamic his tastes and talents are, it was not surprising, but nonetheless astonishing, to find that each of those 7 albums have drastically different sounds from one to the next, each a totally unique concept with a totally unique, colorful story.

Downtown Castles Can Never Block The Sun (a title taken from the mantra he repeats across several tracks on Grapes, 1 of the 7 albums) is our effort to channel the rainbow of sonic expressions, art & poetry beaming from the ark of his unreleased catalogue into a cohesive & communicable compilation. It’s as good of an introduction to Ben LaMar Gay as we could fit onto a single LP. To call it “eclectic” would only scratch the surface. This music is everything.

Rhi, aka Rhiannon Bouvier, finds influence in electronic fields near and

far. Experimenting with gothic sound beds and woozy hip hop beats, she pushes electronic frontiers by melding lo-fi effects and contorting her own vocals as part of honing a sophisticated, minimal style.

Her music has been strongly influenced by the sounds that have surrounded her from a young age: minor keys, romantic composers, her mother’s piano playing; it was important to Rhi that she was able to find music that she connected with along the way. Admiring the music of producers such as Arca, who’s collaborations with FKA Twigs on her ‘EP2’ were one of the biggest inspirations behind her new outfit, Rhi also cites Noah Shebib aka ‘40’ for his part in Drakes ‘If You're Reading This It's Too Late’ as holding a big influence on ‘Reverie’.

Rhi began writing the tracks which would make up her debut album in late 2015. Written about being comfortable in your own thoughts and dreams, Rhi explains: “The lyrics are dreamy, fantastical and sometimes confessional and explore how you can be honest with yourself”. Exploring themes of love, loss, reality and existence, Rhi creates chilled beats, which range in style from bass music to hip hop and R&B to lo-fi. Revealing more on why her upcoming project is personal to her, she explains: “I feel that music is a way to express myself with no limits, and I always go into it feeling complete freedom".

Kaziwa is the second collaboration between Iranian ambient experimental composer Porya Hatami and superlative sound designer Uwe Zahn's Arovane project. The album was originally released on limited compact disc via the Time Released Sound boutique label in July 2016 and now sees rerelease on n5MD. Each of Hatami and Zahn's collaborations has been vastly different from one another focusing on a feeling or technique. With Kaziwa the duo focused their attention toward nostalgic layered piano vignettes. The album's closer “feer” was the first track they worked on and used it as their jumping off point.

What began as a simple loop of piano morphed into something contemplatively fascinating. While that specific track features Hatami supplying most of the piano and Zahn creating the “another time and place” atmospheres the two effortlessly switched off on piano duties all while transparently deviating from the current affectation of Frahm / Sakamoto style ambient piano clarity. This new version of Kaziwa will come on limited vinyl as well as on digital platforms for the first time.

Parlor Walls’ EP EXO is a punch to the face. Imagine steam engines colliding on Mars where the air is thin but somehow inhabitable. Shedding their once post-punk-meets-free-jazz exoskeleton for a more refined art rock, EXO spins a claustrophobic mayhem into a sinewy four song salvo.

Alyse Lamb’s guitars churn a thick anthem. Think Wire’s playful guitar ache coupled with Siouxsie Sioux’s understated angst. Drums and synths propel.

Both delivered in tandem by Chris Mulligan, one limb cranks industrial riffs on a synth while the other catapults dancing beats. And it is that seamless balance between synths and drums that inevitably informs his sound, both equally unorthodox and always imperative. All this is underscored by new addition Jason Shelton’s hazy clarinet and Eno-esque ambience. Tortured loops and sneaking vibrato oscillate the space into a smoky noir. With Lamb on lead vocals, her delivery is thick with defiance. But if you listen closely,

encased in this tight warble a crack in the shell appears. Like the arthropod between skeletons, this crack exposes a vulnerability, often so heavily guarded. Take the bludgeoning “Low Vulture” when she dares you to “get out in front of it,” you don’t know whether to run away or to share a tender moment together.
