OVERVIEW Bibio returns in 2019 with Ribbons. Following his ambient atmospheric project, Phantom Brickworks, Stephen Wilkinson returns to the path of structured songwriting last explored on 2016’s A Mineral Love. Ribbons yields folkloric charm with an organic palette, incorporating a mostly acoustic-led approach exploring ‘60s and ‘70s psychedelia, soul, ambient, electronic and field recordings. The album will be released on the 12th April through Warp Records.

A self-taught musician, singer and producer, he plays nearly all of the instrumental parts on the album and unveils new instruments to his palette, bringing in mandolins, fiddle and other stringed instruments which give a new flavour to his music. But, while the sonics of the album are based around acoustic and other traditional instruments, the title ‘Ribbons’ is extracted from the most electronic-leaning track on the album: “Pretty Ribbons And Lovely Flowers”. On the track, haunting, processed female vocals illuminate a route through dark ambience and a repeating earthy distorted chord sequence. Referencing the endless ribbons of analogue tape and film used in his music, photography and cinematic work, the album artwork is designed

by Wilkinson, where his portrait offers a window onto an English woodland scene with spring bluebells adorned with ribbons.

Wilkinson’s folk influences span ‘60s and ‘70s styles from Britain, Ireland and America; he mixes influences of homegrown acid folk with the dreamy harmonies of its Californian counterpart. He also pays homage to his past J Dilla and Madlib inspired works, this time drawing influence from the eras and records those producers sampled, such as ‘60s and ‘70s Dionne Warwick, Dee Dee Sharp and other soul artists, but rather than relying on sampling records, Wilkinson creates his homages from scratch with appropriate instrumentation. With his latest album Ribbons, Wilkinson oscillates between genres, pairing the unknown with the familiar and moving forward in a way that only he knows how to.

Eli Paperboy Reed is back. ithout Allen Toussaint, New Orleans’ crucial musical transition from blazing 1950s rock and roll to the second-line funk grooves of the ’60s might have fizzled out altogether. As the Crescent City’s preeminent producer, arranger, composer, and session pianist, his visionary contributions provided the seminal bridge to a new sound for a new decade. Toussaint’s creative muse was at its zenith during those carefree days at Minit/Instant and Sansu/Deesu.

“It was quite a university,” he says. “It was heaven. We had a free rein to try anything, and as much as we wanted to.” He’s still going strong today. Since Hurricane Katrina uprooted him from his beloved Crescent City, Toussaint has toured more than ever. “I just love writing, and it seems to even embellish more as time goes on,” says the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, who had more to do with the modernization of New Orleans R&B than anyone else.

Since Danielle Mana's 2017 debut EP for Hyperdub, ‘Creature’, which was a taut, evocative suite of beatless, almost neo-classical electronics, we now find his music has caught an alien virus and started hallucinating. On ‘Seven Steps Behind’, the borders between reality and the weird have collapsed on each other, and with each listen through its zigzagging course, you’re rewarded by its strange twists and turns.

‘Seven Steps Behind’ is an electronic album that doesn’t always sound electronic; a great deal of the record has been created to sound like prepared pianos, harpsichords, cellos and flutes. At other times, sampled acoustic instruments and specially recorded sessions have been processed through software and careful editing. It’s this sophisticated layering of contrasting versions of the same sources that help give this record its uncanny balance. The album also plays with your sense of time in its mostly drum-free hall of mirrors, pulling from minimalism, chamber music, dark jazz, and synthesiser experiments.

Mana’s singing voice also makes it’s debut here, albeit adorned by abrasive FXs. His lyrics are encrypted in noise, in fitting with the music’s chimeric character, casting images for the listener to decipher. His heavily manipulated voice enters on second track ‘Myopia For The Future’, sounding something like a singing motorbike pitched over bouncing ostinatos, or on ‘No Body’s inhuman, word-less range, where it’s impossible to tell where the human finishes and the machine starts. Or in the case of ‘Leverage For Survival’ it’s animal and machine. Here, as with the album’s eponymous final track, a sensory assault subsides to reveal a heart-wrenching melancholy that anchors the record.

Listening to ‘Seven Steps Behind’ is like stepping into a dream, with all the curious emotions and buried meaning that involves. Yet for all its restless, shifting energy it manages to hold both dissonance and melody in sweet proportion.

In season 2 of IFC’s Documentary Now!, the episode “Test Pattern — Final Transmission” parodied/paid tribute to Jonathan Demme’s “Stop Making Sense,” a concert documentary of the Talking Heads.

In order to get the same feel and sound, the directors organized a live performance of Test Pattern in San Gabriel, California. Fred Armisen and Bill Hader put together a band that onstage would tell the chronological story of Test Pattern, by adding band members, song by song. It starts with Fred Armisen and a guitar (“This Is My Street”), then a trio with Bill Hader on bass and Jon Wurster on drums (“Art + Student = Poor”), and then Jon Spurney on keyboards and Maya Rudolph on vocals and synth. Musicians and singers are added throughout the show, but those are they key members of Test Pattern. The last song, “Everybody’s Moving Around” is sung and co-written by Bill Hader, presented as that one song on an album not sung by the lead singer. Senon Williams plays additional bass on that one. The concert was real, as the show put the word out to anyone who wanted to go. Trying to stay true to the aesthetics of the time, they added: “80’s attire gets you best seats.”

Back in print for the first time this era is David Berman’s Actual Air. Released in paperback in 1999 by the now-defunct Open City and praised everywhere in the then-ascendant print press industry (including names that still make waves today like The New Yorker and GQ), David Berman’s first (and only) book of poetry was and is a journey though shared and unreliable memory. Uncannily inspired, Berman’s poems walk through doors into rooms where where one might hear “I can’t remember being born / and no one else can either / even the doctor who I met years later / at a cocktail party” (from “Self-Portrait at 28”), or praise “the interval called hangover / a sadness not co-terminous with hopelessness” (from “Cassette Country”) and “that moment when you take off your sunglasses / after a long drive and realize it’s earlier / and lighter out than you had accounted for” (“The Charm of 5:30”).

At that time, Berman was called a modern-day Wallace Stevens and a contemporary of John Ashberry with his own logic, awareness of pop culture and sensitivity to the details of the post-postmodern world in his poems. Alongside his lyrics to a half-dozen infamous Silver Jews records, Actual Air endeared Berman to lovers of poetry, prose, and music alike. Poet James Tate said it best: “It is a book for everyone.” And poet laureate Billy Collins could only add, “This is the voice I’ve waited so long to hear.”

The second edition of the hardcover version of Actual Air is limited to 1000 copies. W. H. Lung’s arrival at their debut album has been less conventional than most. A trait shared with the music they make, which weaves between shimmering synth pop and the infectious grooves of 70’s Berlin. The band never had any intention of playing live when forming, aiming instead to be a primarily studio-based project.

That approach was challenged when they released their debut 10” ('Inspiration!/Nothing Is') in 2017, which meant that they were quickly in demand. Booking requests started to flood in and W. H. Lung found themselves cutting their teeth on festival stages that summer. Though whilst some new bands may have let that interest change the course of the project, W. H. Lung stayed true to their original reticence and worked mainly as a studio band with their formidable live shows kept sporadic.

W. H. Lung have allowed this album to naturally gestate over the course of two years . The result is a remarkably considered debut - the production is crisp and pristine but not over-polished, the synths and electronics radiate and hum with a golden aura and the vocals weave between tender delivery and forceful eruptions. There is a palpable energy to the songs, as experienced in 10 glorious minutes of opening statement 'Simpatico People'.

“I think it’s important to erase the distinction between ‘high’ and ‘low’ culture,” states Joseph E. This colliding of worlds not only exists in the potent mix between whip-smart arrangements, lyrics and seamlessly danceable music but also in the fact that they are named after a cash and carry in Manchester. As Tom P. explains, “I thought it was funny juxtaposing those kind of austere associations with W. H. Auden and other initialed poets, writers, artists, etc with the fact that it’s really just a Chinese supermarket.”

Where ‘Bag Of Holding’ favored a delicate, contemplative folk-based atmosphere, ‘The Glare Of Success’ amplifies the energy levels, creating a grooving, highly rhythmic experimental dance counterpart, overall propelled by vibe as opposed to the emotion and sentiment of its predecessor.

These new songs continue to showcase Cathcart’s comfort and ingenuity not only in traditional songwriting, but behind the boards as well, by demonstrating his chops in the editing and mixing process. The majority of sounds on ‘The Glare Of Success’ are taken from friend and collaborator Sammy Weissberg’s acoustic instrumental arrangements (violin, viola, cello, clarinet, flute, double bass and horns), as well as the isolated vocal contributions from Palberta (Ani Ivry-Block, Lily Konigsberg, and Nina Ryser), manipulated and recontextualized by Cathcart through a unique form of musical recycling.

Some songs, such as “Day’s End Dub,” retain the pop song structure of The Cradle’s previous work, with the addition of all new vocals and lyrics placed into fresh musical settings.

Other songs, such as “Dub Of Holding,” are entirely instrumental, inserting traditional reggae instrumentation such as hi-hats, melodica, kalimba, bells, percussion, and thick electric bass lines, further lending to the true spirit and sonic essence of dub. Paco utilizes dub-wise editing techniques such as cutting up fragments, looping, reversing, adding delay, echo and reverb, which pays homage to the masters of the genre like King Tubby, Joe Gibbs, Augustus Pablo, and a variety of Studio One classics. The sound fidelity itself feels genuinely analog and organically hand-played, linking it further to the dub tradition. ‘The Glare Of Success’ emphasizes, in equal parts, Cathcart’s musical versatility, limitless imagination, and the tremendous depth of his influences and inspirations. Each new work from The Cradle reveals itself as another piece of a much larger story, and is a shining example of the freedom that Cathcart possesses in the creation of his art.

Aaron Neville is the third oldest of the four Neville Brothers. The brothers were catapulted to international

stardom when they started recording together in 1977, but by this point Aaron had spent the last 17 years building up a substantial catalogue of quality soul and funk. Much of this had been recorded under Allen Toussaint’s guidance for Toussaint and Marshall Sehorn’s Sansu Enterprises. The 25 tracks on this disc represent the best recordings he made for Sansu between 1969 and the formation of The Neville Brothers in 1977. The bonus tracks include tracks that recorded around the same period and 3 newer versions of Neville classics.

Until Here For Years is the 11th studio album from Proem, and the first since 2010's Enough Conflict that is in the more experimental electronica style Richard Bailey is most known for. Until Here for Years is being released just a month before the 20th anniversary of his debut album Burn Plate No. 1 and Until Here For Years has all the hallmark Proem components, that are still as prominent as they were 20 years ago.

Malfunctioning drums, the fat rounded basses (this time out doubled on fretless bass), and those heartstring pads. Oh, the pads! This is where Proem has always differed from his contemporaries. Scholarly enough for the chin scratchers and sufficiently cerebral for those that could care less how the sounds might have been conceived. It's a fine line Bailey has always walked with ease. Every part of Until Here For Years, including the artwork, utilizes an esoterically obscured source. JSON documents, synthesizer schematics, hex values, and even SVG files are used as a basis for his creative input. In other's hands, it surely would sound like an academic exercise, but Bailey makes emotively arresting music from such abstruse sources. Until Here for Years is undoubtedly a return to form and ultimate treat (and thank you) to Proem fans the world over.
