DEFORMING LOBES In 2018, Ty Segall’s Freedom’s Goblin hit with a watershed feeling. A feeling like, how much longer will rock albums like this even exist? An epic epoch double-LP that took the heroic arc of Ty’s populist masterpiece Manipulator and wadded it up into a much more aerodynamic (and harder-hitting) ball (or 20-sided D&D die), FG was also the continued work of the Freedom Band, Ty’s crew of choice since 2016. Storming the world playing songs from throughout his catalog in a series of ecstatic setlists, they sought freedom for themselves and the audience, even it if was just one night of emancipation from world’s numbing chill. An all analog production, recorded live on stage at Teragram Ballroom in Los Angeles by Steve Albini (via mobile unit onto two-inch tape!) and mixed with Steve in Chicago at Electrical Audio, Deforming Lobes witnesses the blunt-force traumpact of The Freedom Band in full effect, updating (and upending) numbers from Melted, Emotional Mugger, Twins, Manipulator, $ingle$ 2 and Self-Titled.

From the start, the “Warm Hands” suite shows the growth of the group since recording the original version for the 2017 Self-Titled album — the jam has a new life all its own, and the band explores every song with similar unrestrained curiosity, never forgetting the collective experience they’re sharing. The feeling between audience and band at Los Angeles’ Teragram Ballroom on those January nights was its own special thing; here, the band is somehow even more front and center, making Deforming Lobes the first wholly original statement from The Freedom Band and bookending the Goblin experience with a fuck of an exclamation point.

A year-plus later, another rock album exists — but what’s to be done with the guitar? These guys did everything they could get away with to a certain degree of (well-focused) depravity. Maybe now it’s time for a transition, away from live band rawk into whatever, who knows? But before you grieve your speculative future loss too hard, you really oughta get Deforming Lobes.

Sam Shepherd aka Floating Points’ music taste is notoriously tricky to define, ranging from ethereal classical at one end to coruscating techno at the other, united only in a firm belief in the transcendental power of music to move hearts, minds and – yes – feet. Similarly, his production career has ranged from early experiments in dance music with breakout records such as the ‘Shadows EP’ and collaborating with legendary Gnawa master Mahmoud Guinia to his expansive album ‘Elaenia’, which met with critical acclaim upon its release in 2015.

This Late Night Tales excursion into the depths of the evening reflects his broad tastes, coupled with some tracks exclusive to Late Night Tales.

Shepherd delved into his childhood memory for this one, a track taken from the first album his parents bought him, Kenny Wheeler’s ‘Music For Large & Small Ensembles’: of which Sam offers up his interpretation of ‘Opening Part 1’.

Closing the album, Lauren Laverne reads the suitably nocturnal poem ‘Ah! Why, Because The Dazzling Sun’ by Emily Brontë.

NO WAHALA: HIGHLIFE, AFRO-FUNK & JUJU 1973-1987 As part of their 20th Anniversary celebrations, Strut present the first new volume in their pioneering ‘Nigeria 70’ series for over 8 years, bringing together rare highlife, Afro-funk and juju from the ‘70s and early ‘80s. Compiled by collector and DJ Duncan Brooker, this new selection of tracks is receiving its first international release outside of Nigeria.

The compilation returns to a fertile heyday in Nigerian music when established styles like highlife and juju became infused with elements of Western jazz, soul and funk and musicians brought a proud new message post-independence. Brooker places the spotlight particularly on some of the incredible Ukwuani musicians from the Delta State region as guitarist Rogana Ottah and Steady Arobby’s International Brothers Band forged their own fluid brand of highlife and soulman Don Bruce drew on the US R&B greats for a series of great albums and explosive stage shows at his residency at Hilton Hotel in Abuja.

Elsewhere, the album explores the close connection between Nigeria and Benin’s music, most famously through Sir Victor Uwaifo, appearing here with a killer mid‘80s ekassa jam, as well as highlife hitmaker Osayamore Joseph on ‘Obonogbozu’ (Joseph made headlines in Nigeria for very different reasons in 2017, surviving a one month kidnapping ordeal).

Consider Natural Facts by Garcia Peoples to be your heady, friendly reminder that it’s alright to let the sunshine in. The second album in less than a year from those lovable New Jersey moptops with the sweet twin guitars, Natural Facts provides a portal to the carefree place that both indie rock and jam bands forgot, and a handy alternative to whatever you may need an alternative from.

Bolstering the summer glow of 2018’s Cosmic Cash with flashes of fuzz, teeth, and power, Natural Facts is a natural progression for Garcia Peoples.

The more driving counterpart to its rural predecessor, Danny Arakaki and Tom Malach’s guitars remain at centerstage on machine gun shreds like the albumopening “Feel So Great” and the rolling grooves like “High Noon Violence” (which would fit right in with one of David Crosby’s early ‘70s studio supergroups). Playing cleanly articulated lines that perhaps recall any number of other guitar tandems--Allman/Betts, Verlaine/Lloyd, Jansch/Renbourn-Garcia Peoples’ guitars are most influenced by the sound of two guys hanging out, figuring out how to play guitar together.

With Derek Spaldo (bass) and Cesar Arakaki (drums), the quartet is joined on roughly half the tracks by keyboardist Pat Gubler (PG6, Wet Tuna, Tower Recordings), who--since contributing to Natural Facts--has become a frequent auxiliary Garcia. On the quieter passages of “Patient World,” Gubler’s zones set Tom and Danny’s entwinements into an atmosphere that suggests what the briefly-lived never-recorded Barrett/Gilmour Pink Floyd lineup might have done, given another few years.

Tracked in Philadelphia with Jeff Zeigler (Kurt Vile, War on Drugs, Mary Lattimore), Natural Facts isn’t a throwback, as much as Garcia Peoples sometimes accidentally sound like a band one might stumble into at New York’s late Wetlands Preserve in the mid-‘90s. Rather, it’s a newly emerging conversation, songs and structures and solos and duos drawing from the latest and most right-on musicians to cross Garcia Peeps’ collective transom. The classic rock guitarists of yore might be obvious subsequent touchstones, but bend your ear and newer colors emerge, generated from hours and years of talk and music. Listen close. Nothing inorganic here, just pure Natural Facts.

Teensville proudly presents the first ever compilation of English-sung recordings by Graham Bonney. Thank You Baby compiles the A and B sides of his fourteen UK singles from 1965-1970 and also includes tracks from his rare debut LP. Bonney surrounded himself with top notch producers, arrangers and sessions players, with the results being very audible on this disc. Bruce Johnston (of The Beach Boys Fame) penned the title cut. The disc contains 32 cuts in total with several in stereo.

Soul Jazz Records presents this new collection featuring the heavy 70s roots reggae of Bunny Lee – a living legend, one of the last of the great Jamaican record producers who helped shape and define reggae music in the 1970s from a small island sound into an internationally successful musical genre.

From teenage fan to young record plugger for Duke Reid, Sir Coxsone and other early pioneering Jamaican musical entrepreneurs, Lee has spent his whole professional life inside the Kingston music industry. In the 1970s he rose up to become one of the major record producers in Jamaica alongside Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, and the other ‘small axe’ producers, who broke the dominance of the ‘big tree’ producers that had ruled Jamaican music in the 1960s.

During this era ‘flying cymbals’, crashing reverbs, dark echoing thunderclap gunshots and other ‘implements of sound’ filled his record productions as Bunny Lee explored the outer limits of dub with his friend King Tubby in the mix on wild versions that accompanied any 45. A Bunny Lee record provides a creative and mysterious hidden guide to reggae music itself, a double-sided three-minute intangible history lesson etched in wax.

8. King Tubby Meets Tommy McCook and The Aggrovators - King Tubby Dub

Bunny Lee first recordings in the late 1960s were mainly rock steady but as the 70s approached the music soon began to mutate and slow down into ‘reggae’ as the sound became heavier, more rootsy and the sound itself began to change with the explosion of dub.

Lee was at the forefront to this dramatic musical shift into roots reggae, and by this time had become a major producer, capable of working with whoever he chose as world-famous singers, DJs and musicians lined up to work with the charismatic man. Lee also employed a fluid but stable set of crack session musicians who he named The Aggrovators.

Most of the recordings featured here come from the mid-70s, a time when Bunny Lee was definitely ‘in the zone,’ releasing heavyweight singles at an almost unstoppable rate. Bunny Lee’s career stretches over five decades and he has upwards of 2,000 production credits on vinyl.

‘Yeah man, night and day. One weekend I remember, I go in a Channel One on a Friday night and I never come out ‘til Monday morning. Just send out to get food and ting.’

Bunny Lee was one of the first Jamaican producers to travel to England in the late 1960s, at the beginning of the nascent British reggae music industry as record companies such as Trojan, Pama and others began licensing Jamaican music in the UK to supply the expanding West Indian communities living up and down England. Lee encouraged other Jamaican producers to do the same, including Lee Perry, Harry J and Niney the Observer, and also became a conduit between the British music industry and numerous younger Island-based producers - a frequent flyer reggae ambassador, a musical courier exchanging tapes for royalties.

CD is a 4 panel digipack with lyric booklet. ‘Yn Ol I Annwyn’, Welsh for Return To The Underworld’, it is the third part of the trilogy of albums that began with ‘Noeth Ac Anoeth’ in 2015 and 2017’s ‘Y Proffwyd Dwyll’ (which got them nominated for the Welsh Music Prize in 2017). The 8 songs that comprise the album, sees the band delve deeper into their collective influences, embracing full on space rock, atmospheric film soundtracks, melancholic acoustic interludes, psychedelia, cosmic moogs and percussion, moments of introspection and light … and of course, large helpings of doom. The fat riffs, big hooks and endless space grooves are all present. Jessica Ball’s voice glides over it all, both sweet and melancholy, yet this time more assured. A myriad of stacked harmonies and layered vocals weave in and out of the tracks, adding an ‘other-worldly’ melodicism to the songs.

Whoosh may indeed be a silly word but it almost onomatopoeically captures the sound and essence of The Stroppies first proper debut album, one that breezes along with boundless energy, a refrained pop strut, infectious grooves and the sort of jangling guitar melodies that sound like a prime-era Flying Nun band. Between them, the Melbourne-based band have been in countless bands such as Boomgates, Twerps, Tyrannamen, Primetime, Blank Statements, The Blinds, White Walls, See Saw and Possible Humans. The band formed together around a kitchen table in 2016 with a heavy focus around the essence of collaboration and a DIY ethos. This led to an acclaimed cassette release of lounge room recordings, which was then pressed onto vinyl to more acclaim. The Stroppies next step was then taking their DIY approach to home recordings into the studio to make a transitional leap to what would become their proper studio debut. “Whoosh is our first concerted effort to make something with a bit more sonic depth,”says Claudia Serfaty (the bands other primary songwriter). It’s a record that possesses all the spunk and gusto of a young band hurtling forward yet also knowing when to take their foot off the accelerator. It’s an album that simultaneously feels young and fresh but wise beyond its years. “Whoosh is the most robust sounding release we have ever recorded,” Serfaty says.

Combining taut post-punk rhythms, indie jangle, seamless melody and sugary pop, it’s a record that Lord says is influenced by: “All sorts of things - life, work, relationships, old cartoons and the last 60+ years of guitar-based pop music in some form or another.

Amirtha Kidambi, Elder Ones From Untruth

RIYL: Moor Mother, Anthony Braxton, Mary Halvorson, Alice Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders The second release by Amirtha Kidambi’s ensemble Elder Ones, From Untruth is comprised of four pieces grappling with issues of power, oppression, capitalism, colonialism, white supremacy, violence and the shifting nature of truth. This music means to give the listener momentary relief from the anxiety and pain caused by living in our current reality.

From Untruth builds upon the bedrock foundation of Kidambi’s previous compositional and conceptual work with Elder Ones, while forging uncharted territory. After a journey into wordless abstraction on Holy Science (Northern Spy, November 2016), Kidambi felt the urgency of the political moment required a direct and verbal call to action.

The instrumentation adds a layer of technology as a metaphor for modernity, with Kidambi on analog synthesizer and Max Jaffe’s drumming talents extended to electronic Sensory Percussion. The frenzied improvising of Matt Nelson on soprano sax and gravity of Nick Dunston on bass, anchor the music in the tradition of free jazz, while it pushes into new futurist realms.

The aesthetic seamlessly reels from modal meditation, atonal expressionism, free improvisation and melodic invention, to unabashed bursts of punk rock energy.

MIRAMAR SALIDA b/w URGENCIA DAP - 1120 A/B A “miramar” is a place from which you can see the ocean. The bolero group, Miramar, chose this word as their name to evoke a place of peace, reflection and solace for a broken hear t. Even the bolero, a romantic music born in Cuba in the 1800’s, might have been conceived by the seaside. In the 50’s and 60’s it became the quintessential musical expression of romance in Latin America. It is this era of the music from which Miramar draws their inspiration.

“Urgencia” (or “urgency”), tells of the desperation a hear t feels when it is swept away by romance, but risks all for fear of not having another chance at love. The flip, “Salida” means “a way out.” It is a song about the surrender that comes after tr ying to break free from the darkest of places, of endless frustration and sadness. The lyrics allude, but never tell.

“Cleveland’s Tim Thornton has been recording as Tiger Village since 2013, issuing a steady stream of releases that have demonstrated immense versatility and a unique approach to electronic music. His releases are distinct, hyper-detailed suites of warped rhythms and synthscapes.

His label, Suite 309, has released music by other aliases and collaborations, including the more dance floor-centric CDX and the pop-deconstructionist duo Splice Girls. His records have an absurdist streak, as if reflecting dance music through a funhouse mirror. Earlier this year, he released a recording of oil boiling on a stovetop that wouldn’t sound out of place in the Editions Mego catalog... Like much of the music from today’s Midwest underground, [Tiger Village] moves beyond danceable rhythms and haunted atmospheres while also rejecting the seriousness of previous waves of IDM and conceptual electronic music. While artists like Giant Claw (AKA Keith Rankin, who runs Orange Milk) and Fire-Toolz (who released a tape on Suite 309) have also let loose maximal deluges of incongruous sounds, Thorton’s music is more subtle.” Resident Advisor

Thornton offers up a breakneck cycle of hyperactive beats built over shards of fragmented percussion and melodic bursts of day-glo synthesis. His tracks sketch out a hybridized production style with one foot in the non-recursive arrangements of IDM icons like Aphex Twin or Autechre and the other foot in the unhinged, far-off-the-grid drum styles of free jazz and improv.

Tiger Village’s beats ripple through his dense mixes in sustained bursts whose individual bars bear no trace of legible looping structures or four-on-the-floor kick/snare configurations. Far from the territory of pure chaos, his compositions maintain a shifting sense of groove and unexpected danceability as semblances of in-the-pocket beat structures appear within his networks of morphing percussive texture. Modern Drummer’s synth work veers from instances of bright square-wave melody and major key harmony to flights of chromatic confusion that evoke the wonky, carnivalesque worlds of a lineage of producers stretching from The Residents to contemporary producers like Foodman and Giant Claw. The latter has appeared on Thornton’s own shape-shifting experimental label Suite 309, which has also released tapes by HausMo artists like Mukqs and Fire-Toolz.

In step with his longtime day job as a quality assurance specialist at vinyl record plant Gotta Groove, Tiger Village approaches his overloaded spreads of sound with a refined sense of tonal fidelity and detailed spatialization. His linear beat programming speeds through jittering hi-hat runs planted over a queasy backdrop of multiple contrasting kick drum tones, dusted with seemingly randomized layers of tuned toms and patches of alien noise - all pumped from his rig of hardware samplers, keyboards, and synthesizers. As a contrast to his electronic palette and the tones of his drum kit, Thornton augments his arrangements with homemade percussion samples drawn from incidental sources like falling items, PVC pipes, and spring-laden tubes. His music bears the evidence of a long trajectory of drumming in different contexts, from his early rock and hardcore-influenced bands through the acid techno and gabber experiments of his project CDX. In a musical landscape where the trope of “deconstructed club music” has become stale shorthand for any project with atypical samples or fractured synths presented over a throbbing kick drum, Modern Drummer peels back the walls that enclose the dancefloor and sets out into a multihued mental expanse beyond the outer limits of any earthbound zone.

“Luminous Volumes”, the debut LP by NYC instrumental trio Skryptor, is the work of learned veterans with a holistic command of loud-rock techniques. The band's members, who have contributed to Dazzling Killmen, Craw, Stats and many other projects, bring together various influences - from Black Sabbath's hazy stomp to Sonny Sharrock's fiery improvisations and the ecstatic prog-jazz of Mahavishnu Orchestra - to create a complex yet immediate sound.

Skryptor's roots stretch back to the early '90s post-hardcore underground. Cleveland's Craw and St. Louis’ Dazzling Killmen, two of the more advanced and unusual bands of the era, struck up a friendship and occasionally shared the stage. David McClelland and Tim Garrigan - guitarists in Craw and the Killmen - respectively, reconnected when both found themselves living in New York in the early 2000s.

In Skryptor, they join up with Hank Shteamer, drummer for bands including Stats and an avid longtime fan of McClelland and Garrigan's prior bands. A 2015 Craw and box set, spearheaded by Shteamer and co-released by Aqualamb Records, led to two reunion gigs, which in turn became the direct impetus for Skryptor: “When Craw powered up again, I realized I had come to some sort of peace with the idea of making music as an endless process, and began stockpiling musical ideas.

That led in a pretty natural way to Skryptor,” says McClelland, who had drifted away from making music in the preceding years.

Shteamer and McClelland set about writing together, with McClelland on bass for the first time in his musical career. Upon realizing they needed a third instrumental voice, they approached Garrigan about getting involved. He agreed to join, and the nascent band immediately dove into writing its debut, intensively reworking the compositions over and over until they were left with a crisp 35 minutes of music, free of any “dead air,” as Shteamer puts it.

"They had some good riffs/arrangements of some things, and gave me room to add and stretch out parts," explains Garrigan. "I eventually contributed more writing/arrangement wise."

The results range from the muscula muscular, kinetic prog-punk of "Red Mountain" and the wild synchronized shredding of "Raga" to the gentle atmospherics of epic album closer "Summer Blossoms." Fans of the members’ prior bands will recognize a similar brand of gritty intensity and brainy intricacy in Skryptor, coupled with a new focus on concision, power and improvisational depth. - One Sheet copy by Doug Moore (Pyhrron)

“Blessed is the Boogie” is the eagerly anticipated third album by Western Australian rockers Datura4.

Rick Vito.” With the release of their CD/DVD, “Blue Again,” Rick was nominated for a 2010 Grammy Award in the “Best Traditional Blues” category as both artist and producer. Rozi Plain has announced her new album ‘What a Boost’ will be released on 5 April 2019 on new label home Memphis Industries. The ten track album was self-produced with the help of a long list of musical friends including Kate Stables, Jamie Whitby Coles, Neil Smith (all This is the Kit), Chris Cohen, Joel Wästberg (Sir Was) and Sam Amidon.

Rozi Plain has been making music since her brother taught her a few chords on the guitar aged 13. Raised in Winchester, she spent a few years studying art and painting boats in Bristol, where she began collaborating with long-term friends Kate Stables (This Is The Kit) and Rachael Dadd among many others on a thriving local scene. It was there that Rozi made her first two albums, 2008’s Inside Over Here and 2012’s Joined Sometimes Unjoined, each works of deliciously sad and beautiful pop full of heart-wrenching harmonies dotted with unexpected instrumental flourishes. Released in April 2015 on Lost Map and featuring contributions from Hot Chip’s Alexis Taylor among others her last album Friend was a deeply meaningful and wonderfully measured ode to memory, place, companionship and music’s remarkable power as an emotional salve. A companion album of remixes, unreleased tracks and radio sessions, Friend Of A Friend, was released in 2016.

Almost permanently on tour, Rozi has taken her joyous live show on the road countless times around Europe, the UK and the USA, and has toured with a host of alt-folk luminaries from Devendra Banhart to James Yorkston. She has appeared at festivals including SXSW, Iceland Airwaves, Glastonbury, End of the Road, Latitude, BBC 6Music Festival and Green Man. As bass player and backing vocalist in Rough Trade signed This Is The Kit, Rozi has been touring the world for the last two years, including opening for The National in the UK and North America.

Charlotte Cornfield The Shape of Your Name

“You free yourself when you take away the script,” says Toronto songwriter Charlotte Cornfield. “That’s where this record came from, dismantling patterns and embracing the process.” Cornfield’s third full length, The Shape of Your Name, is set to arrive in April 5, 2019 via Outside Music imprint Next Door Records. The album has a more honed studio sound than her scrappier 2016 release Future Snowbird, and for good reason: it was recorded in 5 different sessions over the course of 3 years. The songs are her strongest and most striking to date - contemplative and contemporary, funny and heart-wrenching - and they’ve got that stuck-in-your-head-for-days quality that Cornfield is known for. The Shape of Your Name features a star-studded cast of collaborators including (but not limited to) Grammy-winning engineer Shawn Everett (Kurt Vile, Alabama Shakes, Weezer, Julian Casablancas), Broken Social Scene members Brendan Canning, Kevin Drew and Charles Spearin, and Montreal songwriter Leif Vollebekk.

“My initial intention wasn’t to make a record at all,” Cornfield muses. “The whole thing kind of happened by accident. I went to The Banff Centre to do a residency and came out with these recordings that I knew I wanted to use for something but wasn’t sure what.” She brought the unfinished songs to her former roommate Nigel Ward in Montreal. “He fell into the producer role seamlessly,” says Cornfield. “We took it slow and just tried things for a while until the vision settled in. There was no rush. It was freeing, and it gave the songs a lot of breathing room to develop.”

For the past four years Cornfield has been booking and managing Burdock Music Hall, a small venue in the west end of Toronto. The job has offered her stability and a strong sense of place in Toronto’s bursting-at-the-gills music community. She’s also an indemand drummer and side musician, and has worked closely with Tim Darcy of Ought, Molly Burch, Adrian Underhill, and members of Lake Street Dive. She has toured extensively in North America and Europe and has supported a huge range of artists including Broken Social Scene, Anais Mitchell, Daniel Romano and Sam Amidon.

Overview: Disciples follow up the raid on the archives of Black Lodge with Rave 'Till You Cry by enigmatic producer ​Bogdan Raczynski​, a collection of unreleased tracks and versions.

Raczynski arrived on the scene in 1999 with not one but three albums released in quick succession that year alone on Rephlex Records, a unique operator even by Braindance standards, rumoured to have been discovered by Aphex Twin whilst sleeping rough in Tokyo. A steady stream of records followed, hyperactive broadsides of percussion set off by a winning knack for the buried earworm melody, much like his mentor RDJ. He also memorably collaborated with Björk and remixed Autechre for Warp's 10+3 compilation, but things have been quiet since the release of his last studio album Alright! arrived in 2007.

Rave 'Till You Cry signals a return across 18 tracks selected and sequenced by Disciples, joining the dots between the outsider junglizm of the '96 Drum n Bass Classixxx “compilation” and his earliest rephlexions on hallucinatory, bassbin-rattling IDM with Boku Mo Wakaran. Across four sides of vinyl, the joyous sugar-rush tunes of classic 90s Nintendo games meet drill-like breaks, ambient drone and slabs of bit-crushed noise. It also showcases a more introspective side to the Bogdan sound, the soundtrack to a labyrinth of tunnels loaded up with gurners starting to feel unwell as the early hours begin to dissipate into the harsh rays of morning light.

Much like the recent resurgence of Digital Hardcore's Christoph De Babalon and the off-kilter time signature of recent records by Demdike Stare and Rian Treanor, Bogdan Raczynski's return is a timely reminder of the menace and beauty contained within irregular rhythm science.

Priscila B brings from Brazil her love of early Tropicalia and the kind of ‘let’s be bad’ attitude that can only come from a land chock full of Catholic guilt. Mimi B brings her love of stripped down, bare essential rhythm. If two drums are good enough for Peggy O’Neill then they should definitely be good enough for you. Together they bonded over a mutual love of 50s malt-shop-pop, 60s minimalist garage, no wave, fuzz and all forms of outsider art. ‘Art damaged’ isn’t a slur, it’s a compliment. Anything lost in translation with this transatlantic duo only doubles the charm.

Played entirely on thrift store instruments with the kind of enthusiasm and naiveté severely lacking in a lot of today’s music this is not some clever re-imagining or ironic take on lo-fi, this is the real deal! Technique and skill be damned, the message comes through strong and that message is “Don’t think about it, just cross the line and enjoy it.” All rolled together with gum, glitter and stickytape in the studio by fellow Birmingham noisemakers Black Mekon, the result is slightly wrong-sounding but infectious one-minute-garage-pop with gusto. An essential member of London’s eclectic Night Slugs camp, he’s back with a fully developed body of work featuring six key vocal collaborators. While still steeped in low-end pressure like his past work, ​Song Feel ​reaches toward a classic timelessness: time-honoured elements of production sit seamlessly alongside the most contemporary sounds, as Girl Unit densely layers radio gloss and big melodies over beats that take influence from a variety of Club and Pop sources.

Since the start Girl Unit has always taken influence from pop, preferring to hear music with vocals both on and off the dancefloor. Here he has created a unique sonic environment for each of his collaborators to tell their story. The record opens with ‘WYWD’, featuring R&B iconoclast and long-time collaborator Kelela gliding over intimate street soul sonics and luminous funky leads. Next, a volatile West Coast bassline and stadium-size dancehall percussion guide British singer Taliwhoah through elegant synth washes on ‘Stuck’. On ‘Wreck’, Brooklyn rapper Ms Boogie spits hardcore verses that twist and turn along GU’s erratic lows, creepy atmospheres and drillin’ drums.

‘Pull Up’ featuring Tampa’s Thast delivering a menacing confrontational flow over gliding subs and eerie staccato. Los Angeleno Rush Davis sings metaphysical soul over a saccharine choir on the slow-burning ‘Evidence’. Lastly, London’s Brook Baili dances with big piano chords and jubilant basslines on the radio-ready swing of ’24 Hours’.

Though Girl Unit gave his features free reign vocally, clear themes of changing relationships in a modern era emerge across ​Song Feel, lending the record a curiously frothy yet intimate sensation. In-between, blissfully stripped-down instrumental interludes bind everything together, giving the album’s host and creator some much-deserved solo time.
