There is a common theme here. It's not a record about infidelit y, shallow seductions, fleeting backdoor tr ysts, or any of the other common clichés of R&B. These are poetic testaments to truer love. From the vaults of Studio One comes an 18 track bonanza of rare sides featuring both the label’s top hit makers as well as some of its more obscure artists. From Alton Ellis, Johnny Osbourne, and the Gaylads to Roy Tomlinson, the Soulites, and the Officials, the collection spans the label’s output from the late sixties to the early 1980s. These recordings might be rare, but they are some of the best “forgotten” songs released by Studio One. Where once only found in the collections of Reggae aficionados and fetching tidy sums on the internet, From the Vaults, Vol. 1 showcases some of the greatest “lost” music by Jamaica’s legendary label.

Studio One has always been Jamaica’s premier label, having discovered and recorded some of the top names in Reggae. From the Vaults, Vol. 1 introduces some of the lesser known artists, and some rarer tracks from the more famous. All 18 songs here are found on CD for the first time, with two previously unreleased.

The two years since Field Music’s last album Commontime have been strange and turbulent. If you thought the world made some kind of sense, you may have questioned yourself a few times in the past two years. And that questioning, that erosion of faith - in people, in institutions, in shared experience - runs through every song on the new Field Music album.

The brother’s studio, on the banks of the river Wear, became a sanctuary away from everything political and personal, a cocoon of creativity. MUDDY GURDY FRENCH HURDY GURDY MEETS THE NORTH MISSISSIPPI HILL COURNTRY BLUES A trio of French musicians – Tia Gouttebel (guitar, voice) Gilles Chabenat (Hurdy-Gurdy - a traditional French instrument) and Marc Glomeau (percussion) – conceived a type of music that draws its inspiration from traditional French music and North Mississippi Hill Country Blues, using the Hurdy-Gurdy as a 2nd guitar. Following a daring new path, they brought together two musical cultures that had never before been associated with one another. For their second album, they decided to travel to the native land of North Mississippi Hill Country Blues, to bring to life this unprecedented union. And so the “Muddy Gurdy” adventure began.

They traveled to the United States and immersed themselves in the country towns of North Mississippi, where they hoped to make “nomadic” style recordings with major local artists. Cedric Burnside, Shardé Thomas, Cameron Kimbrough, and Pat Thomas in the Delta, all descendants of prestigious elders (RL Burnside, Otha Turner, James Son Thomas) lent themselves to the project with talent, humility and the excitement of a unique musical experience.

Far removed from fancy recording studios and cutting edge technology, field engineer Pierre Bianchi captured the emotion of these encounters with only an 8 microphone preamp and a computer. The recordings took place on front porches, back porches, at people’s houses and in historic landmarks which are woven into the memory of Mississippi (Dockery farm, Ebony Club). The result is an incredibly authentic recording, without any gimmicks or gloss, where the titles are recorded on location, where the old melts into a new music that is all its own.

I also wanted to highlight our band sound by playing live in a room together, with just a handful of overdubs. DOC WATSON LIVE FROM CLUB 47 CD RELEASE DATE: FEBRUARY 9, 2018 LP RELEASE DATE: APRIL 2018 Long acknowledged as America’s premier folk guitarist, Arthel Lane “Doc” Watson was born in what was then the tiny rural community of Deep Gap, North Carolina in the heart of the Blue Ridge mountains on March 3, 1923. Surrounded by music and musicians, Doc and his siblings grew up listening to hymns, murder ballads and down home string band music, all of which would later find places in his own repertoire.

In 1953, Doc formed a honky tonk dance band with pianist Jack Williams called Jack Williams and his Country Gentlemen. Their repertoire consisted primarily of rockabilly, country and western, pop standards and square dance tunes, and Doc played electric guitar in this ensemble. To fill occasional square dance requests, Doc learned to flatpick fiddle tunes on the guitar, as Joe Maphis had done in the 1930s. Unlike his contemporaries Chet Atkins and Merle Travis, who started their professional careers playing acoustic guitars and later switched to electric, Doc began on electric and later made the transition to acoustic with the advent of the folk revival of the Sixties.

Although he continued to work with Williams playing country and pop music, Doc never stopped playing traditional mountain music with his family and friends at home. These included Clarence “Tom” Ashley, Doc’s father-in-law Gaither Carlton, and two other neighbors, fiddler Fred Price and guitarist Clint Howard, all of whom would travel and record with Doc in the future. It was in these comfortable home surroundings that Doc was first discovered and recorded by folklorist Ralph Rinzler and collector and discographer Eugene Earle, who were on a collecting trip through North Carolina looking for traditional artists to record. Once these field recordings were released, as “Old Time Music at Clarence Ashley’s Vol. 1” (and later Vol. 2) on Folkways Records, Doc’s reputation grew, and he soon began playing for enthusiastic urban audiences farther from home. Rinzler presented Doc in concert in New York City for his organization, The Friends of Old Time Music, in March of 1961, and booked a series of follow-up dates which included a stop in Cambridge at the Club 47 in February of 1963, where the present recordings were made.

Launched in 2008, Son Lux was initially a solo affair, the result of a classically trained mind straining against the constraints of the medium, turning piles of self-sourced note snippets into pulsing digital orchestras. Through 2013's Lanterns, Lott maintained his auteur approach while broadening the Son Lux sound and guest list to unexpected results. The album drew the attention of several major pop acts, many of whom who incorporated moments from the album into their own works. Lorde even teamed up on a redux of "Easy," and covered the song on tour.

In recent years, the project's list of collaborators has grown to include Woodkid, Moses Sumney, Antlers, My Brightest Diamond, Olga Bell, and yMusic (who also contribute to Brighter Wounds). Lott's extracurriculars have included starting a rap-pop-folk band with Sufjan Stevens and Serengeti called Sisyphus, and scoring films like The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby and Paper Towns. Bhatia and Chang, accomplished soloists and collaborators in their own right, were first brought on as touring musicians but soon found a home in Son Lux, cowriting 2015's Bones with Lott while on the road. This period was a defining experience for the young German composer, grown up as a pianist and then attracted by the socalled “neoclassical scene”: “As a teenager I used to listen to Nils Frahm, Ólafur Arnalds, Hauschka and all that world, and my EP was influenced by those artists. Then I moved in other directions: for my first record I really wanted to make something different, something between piano, classical and electronic music, but also with some pop flavours incorporated not in harmonies, but in the songs’ structure”.

The result is a soundtrack of a landscape with echoes of Bonobo and Kiasmos, on the electronic side, and with Bon Iver as Paschburg’s main pop reference, coproduced and mixed by Gijs van Klooster (who has previously worked with Joep Beving and Tom Trago).

In ‘Oceanic’, colours and dynamics melt with a nostalgic, sweet, delicate sound and energetic and touching progressions. “There is the calm of the sea, but also its strength”, Paschburg explains. And that’s powerful.

Punk Slime Recordings are proud to present the debut album from London based Chemtrails. Founded/fronted by romantic and musical partners Mia Lust and Laura Orlova, they make catchy, fuzzy, lo-fi pop music, somewhere between The Pixies, Black Lips and Blondie, with lyrics that are surreal yet earnestly meaningful. Chemtrails made their debut in September 2016 with the single ”Aeons”, and have since released two EPs. Much like the recordings of her previous NNA release, ‘Metal Aether’ continues to explore Lea’s acute interest in the nature of acoustics and the harmonic accumulation of sound, with it’s four pieces having been recorded in Le Havre, France in a former military base, and in New York City, at ISSUE Project Room. With her horn, Lea produces pulsing minimalist patterns, overblown drones, and upper resister squalls that envelop these spaces in waves of overtones, microtones, and psychoacoustic effects. Tracks like “Accumulations” explore evocative, ancient-sounding melodic figures, while tracks like “Sustain and Dissolve” relish in the microtonal relationships between overlapping extended notes. Aside from the saxophone, Bertucci further interacts with physical space by fortifying these pieces with field recordings from diverse locations, ranging from Mayan pyramids to NYC subways. She also integrates other instruments such as prepared piano and vibraphone by recording them onto tape and physically altering them, uniting melody and texture together as one to express the same ideas.

Lea displays a firm grasp of the inherent possibilities of sound manipulation to maximize her music’s power through the recording process, mixing conflicting fidelities and dancing with sonic properties by using them as compositional tools to achieve not only a satisfying dynamic juxtaposition, but a deeper, more organic form of expression as well.

Throughout 2017, Lea fully dedicated her creative efforts toward exploring and informing her music through a variety of disciplines. In addition to recording ‘Metal Aether,’ she wrote and performed during multiple residencies, toured rigorously throughout North America and Europe, organized site-specific improvisation events with the SITE:SOUND series, and published her first book “Tonebook,” a collection of graphic scores by various musicians. Through these endeavors, Lea immerses herself in the essential principles of true musicianship: study, performance, curation, literature, and experimentation. It is with these tools that she connects herself with sound in all of its forms - live, recorded, situational, natural, and unnatural. All of these elements come together to inform the pieces found on this album, creating a sophisticated, multi-faceted, and highly personal body of work. ‘Metal Aether’ feels like the defining statement from an artist in elevated control of their form - a summary of concepts, ideas, and emotions given life from one’s mind and heart.
