Brownswood Recordings is the independent record label founded

by DJ, record collector and broadcaster Gilles Peterson. Founded in 2006, it’s a platform for new artists to grow, and a space for established acts to break with tradition. They were legendary from the beginning; five uniquely talented women writing fantastic songs, rocking as hard as any band out there and harmonizing like psychedelic angels. Read an excerpt below: There is an enormous and curiously shaped hole in the story of the Glands, the on-again/mostly offagain duo or quartet or sometimes quintet but let’s just say band from Athens, Georgia, who released only two albums of weird, irascible, irresistible indie rock before band leader Ross Shapiro died in 2016. He wrote the songs, he sang the songs, he played guitar, and he gathered around him a bunch of close friends to play them. He inspired many people around town, frustrated many others, and generally proved to be a painstaking artist with an ear for catchy melodies, a very grim sense of humor, a taste for reheated Dunkin Donuts coffee, a supernaturally exhaustive knowledge of Grateful Dead bootlegs, and a creativity that extended beyond music to the strange portraits he painted and the odd shapes he sculpted.

Ross’s passing left a hole in Athens, in the community where he had become a fixture and arguably even a celebrity of sorts. And there really is something heroic about his career as an artist, something noble to a life devoted to creativity and creation, even if that mostly means jamming with friends. The Glands first two albums established Ross as an unlikely and maybe even unwilling cult artist; you could argue that not enough people bought Double Thriller and The Glands, but everyone who did became avid fans for life. And even though we only have access to an infinitesimal portion of the music he made, these two albums—and now this third!—add invaluable detail and nuance to our portrait of Ross Shapiro. We can see him reflected back to us in his songs: a guy whose grumpiness hid a big heart and whose reticence could not obscure his talent and vision.

Meg Baird and Mary Lattimore’s collective work—as solo artists, band members, and collaborators—could fill a small record collection. Despite this productivity, these two long-time friends have never recorded an entire album focused exclusively on their unique talents. Ghost Forests mysteriously, thrillingly fills that void.

Independently, Baird and Lattimore have each cultivated highly individual and idiosyncratic tools of expression. Baird’s timeless and soaring voice, guitar, and drums have underpinned pastoral and folk rock explorations as a soloist and in band settings with Espers and Heron Oblivion. Lattimore’s albums of enigmatic, spectral experimental harp sounds move and unfold like films and nature itself. The list of artists that have called upon their voices, talents, and visions to enrich their own work is expansive—a virtual pocket encyclopedia of contemporary indie and experimental musicians.

Over the course of Ghost Forests’ six collaborative compositions we hear deeply sympathetic conversations between the two artists. With access to a deep pool of shared influences, these two friends assembled a collection of sounds conjured from harp, guitar (both acoustic and electric), synths, the human voice, and a shared poetic language. Baird and Lattimore’s subjects range from the sound of light on water, seismic geopolitical anxiety, the smog-exploded sunsets of Don Dudley’s paintings, and vertigo from their respective relocations to San Francisco and Los Angeles from their once-shared home in Philadelphia.

The synthesis of their vision welcomes listeners who might have been familiar with only one of the performer’s solo oeuvres. It also speaks to long-time fans both artists who have long wondered what this dream collaboration might yield.

Steve Gunn has long known Baird and Lattimore and worked with both on his own albums. He says “Meg Baird and Mary Lattimore are two musicians that I greatly admire. estorations has always been a band keenly aware of its surroundings and LP5000 is just that: seven songs written and recorded during a time of transition. It’s a record about displacement. It’s about feeling complacent and coming to the sudden realization that maybe things aren’t as solid as they’d seemed—in politics, in personal relationships, and in the different corners of their hometown of Philadelphia.

It’s about knowing now that if you don’t constantly work 24/7 to keep things together, they can easily fall apart. One long, sustained “Oh, fuck.”

R

ecorded with longtime collaborator Jon Low (The National, Frightened Rabbit, The War On Drugs), LP5000 is everything that fans have come to love about Restorations over the course of its decade-long career: anthemic heartland rock-androll replete with mile-wide riffs, psychedelic chooglin’and too many guitars. During production, the band took the time to examine these seven songs, rip them apart, and rebuild them from the bottom up. “We spent a ton of time deconstructing, trying different arrangements and exploring the material in a way we’ve never had time for previously,” says frontman Jon Loudon. “What we came into the studio with and what we left with were two completely different albums.”

t seems like a moot point to talk about Restorations’ future. For a band who’s spent so many years writing songs about the future unknown, they’re just happy to be in the present, reunited with Tiny Engines for LP5000, who are also celebrating their 10-year anniversary. Ten years is a long time for any band, but for Loudon, Dave Klyman, Ben Pierce, Dan Zimmerman and Jeff Meyers, Restorations is more than being in a band; it’s being a part of a family—a Philadelphia music scene that’s grown to support and be supported by hundreds of musicians, fans and friends. That kind of support is timeless.

s the spirit of the beehive front man Zack Schwartz puts it, Hypnic Jerks sounds like “the state between wakefulness and sleep.” The Philly quintet’s third full-length is named after the involuntary muscle spasms that can happen right as someone begins dozing off ... a perfect feeling to compare the album’s drowsy-yet-restless character to. Unlike the spiraling momentum of the band’s sophomore LP, pleasure suck, the spirit of the beehive takes a more grounded approach here, though the ground it’s standing on is equally otherworldly. Dreamy is a fitting adjective, but the ten tracks on Hypnic Jerks never fully slip into the peaceful character of dream-pop.

ypnic Jerks has the quality of an indescribable dream fading from memory as you slowly begin to regain consciousness. Its warped guitar tones, transcendental synths and smattering of eerie audio samples conjure this purgatorial space between reverie and reality. It’s an arena where the songs unexpectedly contort themselves and take on different textures, morphing in and out of one another. It’s the brainchild of bandleader Jake Long, and features a clutch of London musicians who’ve come through the same circles: Amané Suganami, Twm Dylan, Tim Doyle, Yahael CamaraOnono, Shirley Tetteh and Nubya Garcia, the latter of whom played a part in shaping the early sound of the band. Recorded across three days in mid-2018, the songs have grown out of their live sets over the past year or two. The songs unfold slowly, each of their parts given time to breathe, building up to crescendos which are patiently earnt.

Spiritual Jazz is a tradition that’s leaden with its own traditions, histories and stories. Maisha carve out their own style through that weight of expectation. They channel the greats like Pharoah Sanders, while filtering their own influences from jazz to afrobeat. It’s a sound which rests on trance-inducing rhythms, instinctive musical interchange and repeated, deeply enriching melodic refrains. It’s a combination which has made for their own singular sound.

Brownswood Recordings is the independent record label founded by DJ, record collector and broadcaster Gilles Peterson. Started in 2006, it’s a platform for new artists and music creatives, as well as an outlet for established acts to do something different. Restless and open-minded, the label has championed independent, eclectic music from the UK and beyond.

Night Walks is the brand new glittering, nocturnal album from Sarah Nixey. Written whilst struggling with insomnia, the songs are set in a metropolitan sub-world where everyone dodges the dangers of reality. The lyrics describe episodes that take place over one night, spanning several decades, in a tiny enclave, at the heart of London's bohemia. Night Walks is a modern, sophisticated album, rooted in classic record making. Nixey won over audiences as the singer of darkly glamorous pop group Black Box Recorder. Since then, Nixey has honed her own musical voice with an eclectic solo career. Night Walks arrives seven years since her second solo album Brave Tin Soldiers. This time, she wanted to use a blend of electronica and classic 1970s analogue recording. A few years ago, Nixey had just started writing and recording again at her home studio, after taking a break from music to have her third child, but was forced to stop when she became ill. She had entered a long phase of insomnia, which no doubt contributed to her illness, and this sleeplessness continued during her recovery period.

In 2016, she began writing songs again, during the early hours of the morning. As Nixey explains; “I discovered that the best time to write songs was in the middle of the night” Her writer/producer husband Jimmy Hogarth then offered to help record the songs in the studios they own and run in North West London. The songs in Night Walks, like Nixey's previous solo albums, are full of characters who are often either hanging on or slipping away. She explores themes such as mental health illness (“Coming Up For Air” talks of teenage mental health illness and parental love, England at war (“The Zeppelin” – set in war torn England with Queen of Bohemia Nina Hamnett watching a Zeppelin go up in flames, along with the love of her life, and “Merry England” about post-war slum clearances and lose of community) and night time adventures with mid twentieth century London bohemians (“Tiger Woman”, “Neon Moon” and “Follow Me” – about the allure of nightlife and drunken escapism). With whip smart lyrics and an ear for an adventurous avantpop tune, it’s Sarah’s captivating voice that truly mesmerises. Alternating between a soft whisper, rhythmic talking and full-blown soprano, she manages to encapsulate inky dark nights bathed in a neon-glow, full of desperation, mystery and passion.

Less guitar focused than its predecessor, bass and drums are running the show creating an entirely different Melting Hand, a dynamic powerhouse. Joe Henderson’s presence is felt as the band take on his classic Earth . Joined by Lower Slaughter’s Sinead Young, who provides the vocals, their homage is a perfect tribute to the man, taking inspiration and pushing sonically into new landscapes. Terra ramps up the pace with Johnny Halifax (Johnny Halifax and the Howling Truth) joining the band for a blown out stomp that comes on like ZZ Top on some particularly sketchy speed. WIth Gaia and Dirt closing out the album, Melting Hand have clearly taken a journey into the unfamiliar, and have reaped the rewards creating a piece of work that cannot easily be categorised.

In its own way i have always considered music a form of exploration, there is a true excitement in trying to do something without knowing if it is possible or not. Stories like Mallory’s are inspiring not just because of the physical achievement involved, but also because of the mental willingness to go into the unknown, despite the potential consequences.

The result is something that i am very proud of.

I feel that it has a lot of the DNA of the melodic songwriting from my first record ‘Silence’, but exists in a wider, grander world of new musical landscapes. Writing this record has left me with a lot more questions than answers, but to quote the 19th century explorer Fritjof Nansen; “What lies ahead? we cannot be sure, but it must be beautiful. A start on such a night is full of promise."

In 1923 the British explorer George Mallory was interviewed by the New York Times about climbing Mount Everest. When asked why he wanted to climb the mountain, Mallory famously replied ‘Because it is there’. The year after he gave the interview, Mallory died on the slopes of Everest, It is unlikely he ever reached the summit.

American-born multi-instrumentalist, singer and composer Peter Broderick will release a new extended player titled Two Balloons on November 9th with Erased Tapes. Available as a limited edition 10” vinyl and digital download, it features the score for the award-winning animation of the same name, inspired by an early recording of his, plus a 9-minute electronic rework on the B-side titled Techno For Lemurs.

Fairly often we see albums of “Music inspired by the film __”, but less common is a film inspired by music. Such is the case with Two Balloons. Director Mark C. Smith got the idea for his nine-minute stop frame animation film while out at sea, looking at a majestic funnel cloud in the distance. Shortly after he heard a song by Peter Broderick from one of his earliest recordings — 4 Track Songs — and the music struck a chord so strongly, he knew he wanted to make a film to fit the melody. And so began the five-year labour of love that would eventually produce this enchanting little film, currently circulating film festivals around the world and racking up countless awards and accolades including ‘Best Original Music Score’ at the New Renaissance Film Festival in Amsterdam.

Even though the film was inspired by an older Broderick composition, the score for Two Balloons was recorded from scratch, revised and expanded to fit each frame. The process of stop frame animation is a labour intensive and painstaking one, but the attention to detail didn’t stop at the picture for this film. The score was an integral part of the film from the very beginning, with both the director and composer going to great lengths to experiment not only with the composition itself, but also the fidelity. The first sound heard on the score is a piano playing a waltz figure, and the sound is noticeably lo-fi, but this isn’t just some modern digital trickery. This piano was recorded on a wire recorder, a recording technology that predates magnetic tape and has been virtually forgotten about.

In the process of recording the score, many different technologies were experimented with. In addition to purchasing and refurbishing several wire recorders, the director at one stage acquired several massive AM radio consoles as well as an AM radio transmitter, so that a digital recording from the computer could be broadcast through the AM radio waves and then captured through one of these nostalgic sounding old radios. A variety of these technologies from different eras were used to create a score that both sounds like it’s from several different time periods and from no specific time at all.

The B-side, if you will, is more than just a remix that recycles the original recordings. In fact none of the original parts have been re-used. ‘Techno For Lemurs’ is a homage to the two main characters in the story, the ring-tailed lemurs Bernard and Elba. Serving as Broderick’s first foray into the world of techno, this playful piece reinterprets the melodic themes from the original score by adapting them with electronic instrumentation. In Peter’s own words: “Let’s pretend for nine minutes that we’re ring-tailed lemurs and get this party started!”

Following on the heels of Sunspots, Jeff Snyder’s debut solo analog synthesizer album released this past January, Concerning the Nature of Things is a striking collection of Snyder’s concert music, performed by internationally-renowned musicians. The album is a bold statement of Snyder’s unconventional artistic voice, blending influences from medieval polyphony, Brazilian percussion, and experimental noise music into a singular musical vision.

Now, after 4+ years of refining his approach, Makaya McCraven puts forth an ambitious new work – Universal Beings – a culmination of concepts conceived by In The Moment, and his most elegant & articulated work yet. Spurred by a desire to connect with old friends & new collaborators in places where similar spirits & diasporic jazz innovations are thriving, Makaya worked with International Anthem across late 2017 & early 2018 to setup intimate live sessions in New York & Chicago, and pop-up “studio” sessions in London & Los Angeles. Though the contexts and logistics were D.I.Y. (as they almost always are with IARC), the friends & friends-of-friends that Makaya was able to enlist are top tier players across the board. Some might call them super groups of “new” jazz musicians from their respective cities, with Makaya as a common denominator. But more importantly, collectively they make an inspiring display of the organic global inter-connectedness of the Black American music tradition in 2018.

The first of the sessions was in New York, in the cavernous concrete basement of H0l0 in Ridgewood, Queens, where Makaya improvised with harpist Brandee Younger (Moses Sumney, Lauryn Hill) for the first time, along with his old friend from N.E., Dezron Douglas (bassist for Pharaoh Sanders, Ravi Coltrane), and NY-residing Chicago expats Joel Ross (vibraphone) & Tomeka Reid (cello). Opting to setup in a corner of the front bar instead of onstage, huddled together the group created “bristling, bulbous music with an electric pulse,” as described by Giovanni Russonello in his New York Times piece about the “Best Live Jazz Performances of 2017.”

Just days after the H0l0 session, the second session was recorded live at International Anthem’s Chicago HQ Co-Prosperity Sphere, assembled by Makaya to seize a rare opportunity to make sound with saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings (who was in Chicago from London to perform with Louis Moholo-Moholo). The full group for the gig again included Tomeka Reid on cello, and was completed by Makaya’s home-town low-end lynchpin Junius Paul (bassist for Roscoe Mitchell, recent addition to the Art Ensemble of Chicago).

The third session took place in London, an afternoon hit (before soundcheck of the aforementioned CHICAGOxLONDON showcase) in the upstairs studio of Total Refreshment Centre, where Makaya was joined for 2 hours of free playing by 3 musicians he had never worked with prior – saxophonist Nubya Garcia, bassist Daniel Casimir, and pianist Ashley Henry.

And the final of the four sessions was setup in the garage behind guitarist Jeff Parker’s house in Los Angeles County, a small space where somehow Makaya fit himself and five other musicians – Parker on guitar, violinist Miguel Atwood-Ferguson (Flying Lotus, Thundercat), percussionist Carlos Niño (Dexter Story, Jamire Williams), bassist Anna Butterss, and saxophonist Josh Johnson (Kiefer, Esperanza Spaulding).

In the months following, the improvised recordings from all four sessions were post-produced, edited & arranged by Makaya into four dynamic suites, which he divided & sequenced contextually & chronologically (i.e. on vinyl, the album is split by city per side of the LP, starting with the New York side). Physically spanning national & international borders to create an album that musically spans deep spiritual jazz meditations, pulsing post-bop grooves & straight-ahead boom-bap, Makaya McCraven defies the simplifications of revisionism & regionalism while celebrating the sounds, settings & stories that define the provenance of his work. JD TWITCH presents KREATUREN DER NACHT Strut present an exclusive new compilation curated by Optimo’s JD Twitch, ‘Kreaturen Der Nacht’, bringing together classics, rarities and oddities from Germany’s original post-punk and DIY scene.

1979 to 1984 was an era of particular artistic upheaval in Germany as strong subculture scenes formed in many German cities. Emphasis was placed on expression rather than technical perfection, artistic impact rather than skill. DIY self-organisation prevailed with the establishment of small record labels and independently produced records and cassettes.

Bands experimented across genres and consciously abandoned the English-speaking mainstream with German band names and lyrics. “Although we had a small underground scene, it was very vibrant,” explains Gudrun Gut of Malaria! “Bands like Die Haut, my first band Mania D., Malaria!... we organised gigs ourselves or friends would open a gallery and have bands playing. We hung around together in a handful of clubs like Risiko or Dschungel and went to gigs at SO36. West Germany had other regional scenes too: Düsseldorf and Köln around Der Plan and the Ata Tak label and there was the Hamburg side with Abwärts.

Germany didn’t have a real music industry like the US or England back then.”

It continues the sleek, Detroit-inspired sci-fi techno moves of their ​Electro-Soma​ era, but ties the tracks to a playful concept in which the tracks are presented as an educational soundtrack designed by the 22nd-century company “B12 Systems”.

Housed in an evocative Designer’s Republic sleeve based on a Trevor Webb airbrush painting, the sleevenotes riff on a dystopian future society looking back at the primitive past and includes references to such genre touchstones as Blade Runner, Philip K. Dick and Star Wars.

For the new vinyl edition the original “B12 technology times” sleevenote has been re-designed as a standalone booklet insert, and there is an A5 sticker sheet of future corporate logos from the Time Tourist universe. The download card includes 4 previously unheard alternate versions of tracks from the album.

The CD includes 4 bonus tracks and comes housed in an outer slipcase.

This ambitious project began with a handful of popular standards that Neil and his accompanist of choice, Erik Paparozzi, performed regularly on the road. These numbers allowed Neil to sing his truth, relieving the unending pain of all his trials.

Noting the great reception they received at every show, and fueled by a mutual love of Sinatra’s Watertown, Neil and Erik set out to capture the songs anew in the studio. There, Erik assumed the production chair, acting as Neil’s own Phil Spector, running herd over a latter-day wrecking crew throughout multiple studios in Los Angeles and many others around the world, getting great performances from the best talent around.

Along the way, such star names as John “Rabbit” Bundrick (The Who), Probyn Gregory (Brian Wilson, Beach Boys), Tanya & Petra Haden, Bar McKinnon (Mr. Bungle), Mikael Jorgenson (Wilco), X’s D.J. Bonebrake and many more were welcomed to the session. Plus, guest vocals were contributed from scads of friends and family — Neil’s entertainment family —including, in one unforgettable passage, virtuoso turns from Jack Black and Mike Patton on the Jesus Christ Superstar hit, “Everything’s Alright”!

Sunlight Tonight is the debut solo record from Whigs frontman, Parker Gispert. The eight-song effort finds Gispert, known for leading the Whigs through raw and jangly southern-garage rave-ups, taking a decidedly different musical approach—biting electric guitar riffs are cast out in favor of gentle acoustic picking and strumming, and his band mates’ raucous rhythms are traded in for minimal accompaniment that includes light bass and drums, orchestral strings and even trumpet. Gispert’s lyrics, meanwhile, are his most introspective and personal to date (albeit with a bit of humor thrown in here and there) and they’re delivered in a vocal style that finds him pushing out on his range. The end result showcases a different side of the artist, to be sure. But it’s one that Gispert felt compelled to explore.

Sunlight Tonight was cut at Blackbird Studios and Hacienda Studios, with producer Emery Dobyns (Patti Smith, Antony and the Johnsons) at the helm. Dobyns also added various instrumentation to the tracks, alongside contributions from Black Keys drummer Patrick Carney, former Sparklehorse vocalist Sol Seppy and Adele bassist Samuel Dixon, among other musicians.

List Price $14.99 Missing Earth is the new project of Kyle Gilbride, who is better known as one of the singers and guitar players of Swearin’ (Merge Records). When Swearin’ stopped playing in 2013, Gilbride started playing with fellow Swearin’ member Jeff Bolt under the name Missing Earth. The songs expanded upon Gilbride’s Swearin’ songs, moving into more riffs and stranger guitar parts.

Gilbride has spent the better part of the last 10 years recording artist like Waxahatchee, Radiator Hospital, Dark Thoughts, All Dogs and Girlpool. Having access to his own studio, Wherever Audio, Gilbride got Bolt to lay down drum tracks and then Gilbride began the process of recording the bass, guitars, vocals, synths and whatever else he wanted. Like a lot of self-recorded records, Gold, Flour, Salt began to sprawl.

Gold, Flour, Salt is a diverse record. It opens with the sparse, but rich “Galaxy” which layers vocals over acoustic guitar and strings. “Parliament of Trees” is probably the most similar to Gilbride’s work in Swearin’, where his Doug Martsch-esque vocals live over distorted bass, driving drums, guitar leads and synths. As the record gets into its second half, songs like “Ascendant” and “Holy Death” are stripped down to a slow synth-y base, and the record closes with the three minute long “Spectrum” which serves as an outro for a very unique rock record.

a fierce live program of distorted percussion patterns, unholy vocals, and peals of harsh abstract texture. The album follows the 2017 release of No Self Helps (HAUSMO61) by Kill Alters, her band with Nicos Kennedy and Hisham Bharoocha (of Black Dice, Lightning Bolt, Boredoms). Within the Kill Alters trio, Baxter’s shapeshifting vocals and dense electronic programming intersect with thundering drum kit performances and patches of wailing static intensity to create a strain of “noise” “rock” possessed of fierce emotional weight to match the overwhelming sonics. On her own, as Baxter compresses her practice down to a small rig of Korg Electribe drum machines, an iPad, and her voice, she maintains the ferocity and body-animating rhythmic sensibilities of her collaborative work while pushing her live-recorded compositions to towering climaxes of ego-erasing noise and vocal catharsis. As her machines pound out their loping lattices of beats and scrapes, Baxter pumps each individual element and the mix as a whole through layers of clipping distortion in which disparate elements seem to consume each other and claw for their own space in the spotlight. Her stuttering recursive percussion patterns recall the warp-speed grids of juke and footwork and the blown out industrial workouts of Container and Pharmakon, along with the omnivorous production sensibilities of hip-hop luminaries like J Dilla and Shabazz Palaces.

As Baxter’s vocal performances spread into swathes of garbled chatter or loop as momentary cut-and-pasted samples, peppered with screams and hysteric pronouncements like “I’ll punch you in the dick,” Ask Me How Satan Started moves beyond the realm of beat-focused production into some hybridized vision of solo performance with elements of pop music, collage, and noise swirled together and left out to dry on the pavement. In step with her investigation into the recordings of her own family and personal history that appear throughout the Kill Alters catalog (and surface weekly on Bandcamp in their Kill Alters archives series), Baxter’s solo work contains flashes of her own voice as a child: urging her mother, at one point, to “ask me how Satan started,” in a moment poised somewhere between Exorcist-style family horror and adorable chipmunk voiced curiosity. This dynamic provides a fitting lens for Bonnie Baxter’s entire practice, balanced between terror and glee, between the weight of human depravity and the sense of joy and fulfillment that stems from confronting the forces of evil in society and within oneself.
