Nashville's Hammock follows up 2017's critically-acclaimed Mysterium with Universalis, the second installment of a planned three-album series. While Mysterium took listeners down a horizontal path that explored themes of death and grief, Universalis begins a vertical, upward movement back into the light. At times, Universalis calls back to Hammock's 2006 album Raising Your Voice‌ Trying to Stop an Echo, rediscovering early influences like Low and Red House Painters, while also retaining Mysterium's deep ambient, neoclassical style. To achieve this sound, Hammock brought on Francesco Donadello (A Winged Victory for the Sullen, Olafur Arnalds, Johann Johannsson) and Peter Katis (Interpol, Jonsi, The National), who each mixed portions of the album. The album artwork was curated by The Fuel and Lumber Company with drawings by Pete Schulte, and Matt Kidd (Slow Meadow) returned to play piano and provide additional engineering.

OVERVIEW The broadly musical ideas of remixing, sampling and recreating are constants in Mark Leckey’s work. Leckey’s 2017 exhibition Bridge Age Regression mutated out of the large-scale survey of his work shown at New York’s MoMA PS1, and is a refracted view of his memories and internal mythologizing of a motorway bridge on the M53 in Birkenhead near his childhood home. Life-size portions of overpass, a scale model and sodium-lamp lighting all create a hallucinatory ‘bridge’ (natch) into Leckey’s twisted mind…"The orange sodium lights are called Sox Lamps and they were installed everywhere up until the 1990s, I think. They’ve been phased out now. The Lucozade glow they give off was always an indicator that you were coming up on magic mushrooms, psychedelics would amplify that colour saturation, or rather that leaching out of all other colour. I want the lamps to do the same thing… put you in that altered state.”

Less than a year after the release of sophomore album Origin and Echo, Snow Palms return with a powerful two-track EP – almost 18 minutes of new music.

A-side ‘Everything Ascending’ sees Snow Palms mainstay David Sheppard’s signature pulsing electronics and crystalline glockenspiels augmented by the production, keyboard and compositional skills of Matt Gooderson (Infadels), the vigorous, rhythmic clarinets of Christian Forshaw (Michael Nyman Band, Icebreaker) and the soaring vocal flights of Megan Gooderson.

Over ten minutes in length, this is an undulating, inexorably unfurling odyssey, oscillating seamlessly between passages of mesmeric electronic rhythm, choral-enhanced minimalism and gorgeous, gamelan-like ambience. While there may be echoes of Four Tet, Terry Riley, Steve Reich and Midori Takada’s Mkwaju Ensemble along the way, ultimately, ‘Everything Ascending’ proffers a uniquely rapturous sonic realm that is pure Snow Palms, predicated, according to Sheppard, on the idea of “pushing on - striving for optimistic, sunlit uplands, even as the world around us seems to be turning darker”.

AA-side ‘Circling’, meanwhile, reimagines of one of the highlights from Origin and Echo in bold orchestral style. The work of fellow Village Green artist and renowned film music arranger/orchestrator Matt Dunkley (Inception, Black Swan, Iron Man), this is a brilliant repositioning of Snow Palms’ music in the emotion-soaked cinematic idiom, the original’s rich melodic palette and powerful rhythmic undertows beautifully reworked for elaborately layered, potently arranged strings.

The sole hit on the original version of the album was “Kickin’ Our Hearts Around,” a song written especially for Buck by Capitol Records label mate Wanda Jackson.

Following his critically acclaimed Greenleaf debut Touch My Beloved’s Thought (2016), which was a re-imagining of the music of Charles Mingus, Stomping Off From Greenwood highlights Ward’s skills as a writer and arranger with a set of eight new compositions that explore this unique two-guitar instrumentation, which blends the acoustic and electronic sonic worlds.

You may have seen ERIC SCHENKMAN, onstage before thousands of fans worldwide with the Spin Doctors. He is one of the band’s not-so-secret weapons — a vital songwriter and virtuoso guitarist who crafted the ‘90s band and co-wrote all five of their Top 100 hits. He also worked with Chico Hamilton, Carly Simon, Natalie Merchant, Noel Redding, Phoebe Snow and Corky Laing, among many other notable musicians.

His self-produced third solo album, WHO SHOT JOHN? showcases the many sides of ERIC SCHENKMAN from raw, rockin’ blues to funk/soul/pop. With its elemental lineup of guitar, bass and drums, and songs that seldom stray beyond three chords it’s radio-friendly and familiar enough to draw listeners in. After that, the complexities reveal themselves. The proof is in the beats, in the intimacy of those late nights on the stage and through every moment of WHO SHOT JOHN? Every track digs in deep and doesn’t let go, thanks to Schenkman’s voice, commanding guitar and powerfully emotional lyrics.

Schenkman nailed the grooves with long time pals, drummers Van Romaine (Enrique Iglesias) and Cody Dickinson (North Mississippi Allstars) and co-producer/bassist Shawn Kellerman (Lucky Peterson), working in studios in Newark, NJ, Kitchener, NY and Memphis, TN. Each track crackles with the live energy he has cultivated for the last 30+ years on stage.
