The Norwalk Senior Center invites you to get to know us better. We are here to engage you with a wide variety of interests for adults aged 50 and older. Let us expand your horizons, and enrich your lives, with classes, excursions, fitness activities, health screenings, and our weekday lunch program. Social Services staff are available to provide information and referrals for a variety of services. Be sure to pick up a copy of our newsletter, “On the Go.”

Volunteer Opportunities

If you are looking for a rewarding experience serving and enriching your community, volunteering at the senior center may be the right fit for you. Our volunteers discover new interests, meet new people and develop new skills. Volunteer opportunities range from assisting with various activities such as Nutrition program, Bingo program, community garden, and event preparation. Currently accepting volunteer applications for nutrition program, bingo, and community garden. Please call for more information or stop by the Norwalk Senior Center and complete a volunteer application.

My Senior Center

All visitors, and volunteers, entering the building will be required to use our automated check-in system. The system is designed specifically for senior centers, and is key tag based, meaning, after enrolling, visitors can simply swipe their key tag across a digital scanner to check in. MySeniorCenter software registration is required for enrolling in activities, tours and purchasing tickets. Staff members are available, at the front desk, to help seniors operate the new check-in system.

WINGS PROGRAM - YOUTH EMPOWERMENT GROUP

Instructor: David Plaza, Cost: $10 (Free to youth with parents registered in The Parent Project).

This eleven-week youth empowerment program will help your teen understand and prepare for the different social issues teens face. The program will emphasize on developing their relationships with their parents, peers, and most importantly themselves. They will also discuss how an education can better prepare them to face adulthood. This program discusses various topics including:

THE PARENT PROJECT - PARENTING FOR PARENTS WITH TEENS

Are you having a hard time reaching your teen? Do you miss the days when you and your teen were able to sit and talk? Are his/her grades slipping? Do you find yourself arguing more with your teen? You are not alone. Join The Parent Project and work with trained staff and other parents in developing a healthy relationship with your teen as well as building trust and establishing appropriate boundaries. This program discusses various topics including:

Join us as we visit Mission San Juan Capistrano, a historic landmark and museum, that is the Birthplace of Orange County. Originally built as a self-sufficient community by Spanish Padres and Native Americans, the Mission was a center for agriculture, industry, education and religion. Famous for the Annual Return of the Swallows, Mission San Juan Capistrano is the “Jewel of the California Missions”. After touring the mission, our seniors will have an opportunity to enjoy lunch at one of the many restaurants nearby.

Lunar New Year, often called the Spring Festival or Chinese New Year, is the most important holiday in Asian communities around the world. The Senior Safety Program is conducted by the Norwalk Public Safety Department. Bimonthly, a staff member will address a specific challenge that older adults in Norwalk face. Participants will learn important safety tips to maintain a home free of clutter and how to prevent hazards and other life threating emergencies.

LAUGHTER YOGA

Do you have enough laughter in your life? Did you know that you can turn laughing into exercise? Join us for Laughter Yoga where staff from Scan Independence at Home will teach you how to combine laughter with yoga breathing to make exercise fun! This presentation will be in a classroom setting; therefore, yoga mats are not required or needed to participate.

Romance scams are a type of confidence scheme. Scammers work to gain a victim’s trust and then provide false information or misrepresentation to gain financial benefit by relying on the compassion of the victim. Join us as staff from the California Department of Financial Protection & Innovation provides education on how to protect yourself from becoming a victim of this type of scam. Tips on how to avoid losing money to a romance scam will be provided.

The City of Norwalk Public Safety Department staff will be conducting a presentation on personal safety. You will learn how to remain safe while on the streets, whether in the car, walking, or while waiting for public transportation. The presentation will provide important safety tips, a safety tip video presentation, and a Q&A opportunity on personal safety.

THYROID SCREENING

Staff from Scan Independence at Home will be sponsoring a free thyroid screening for seniors. A technician will be checking the thyroid gland using an ultrasound. A thyroid ultrasound is a safe, painless procedure that uses sound waves to examine the thyroid gland. It can be used to help diagnose a wide range of medical conditions affecting the thyroid gland.

SENIOR SCAM PREVENTION SERIES: WILLS AND TRUST SCAMS

An Estate Plan should protect your interests, assets, and loved ones. What it should not do is cause harm or distress. Unfortunately, there are people and unscrupulous companies out there that prey on vulnerable individuals who don’t understand Estate Planning. Join us, as staff from the California Department of Financial Protection and Innovation host a presentation on wills and trust scams. You will learn important tips that should be followed to decrease your chances of becoming a victim of an estate planning scam/fraud.

This class is for older adults, who want to focus on muscle conditioning and light weight activity at a slower pace with a redefining total body workout using hand weights 1-3 lbs. max.
