Dear Norwalk Community,

This year, we began our journey with the success of the “Park Your Thoughts” Survey, which invited residents to share their experiences and ideas about our parks, facilities, programs, and events. We received an incredible response, and your feedback continues to shape how we serve our community and plan for the future.

Building on that momentum, we’re proud to highlight the Norwalk Park Community Outreach meetings, which brought neighbors together to help reimagine one of our city’s most beloved spaces. This collaborative effort culminated in an exciting Open House, where we showcased the final concept design to an enthusiastic community. Thank you to everyone who participated and helped guide the vision for a more vibrant, inclusive Norwalk Park.

We’re also making strides in sustainability. Construction is now underway on solar arrays at both the Norwalk Arts & Sports Complex and the Norwalk Aquatic Pavilion. These installations will reduce our energy consumption, lower utility costs, and support a greener, more efficient city.

Fall wouldn’t be complete without our signature Halloween festivities! Join us for spooky fun at our Halloween Festivals, taking place at Hermosillo, Norwalk, and Lakeside Parks. We’re also thrilled to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the Arturo Sanchez Sr. Halloween Parade. This year’s milestone event will include a special gallery exhibit featuring historical photos and videos provided by the Sanchez Family—honoring four decades of community spirit and tradition.

We can’t wait to see you out in our parks this season!

Sincerely,

Built in 1891, the D.D. Johnston-Hargitt House Museum is a two-story Eastlake Victorian farmhouse originally owned by Darius David Johnston, one of Norwalk’s earliest pioneers. Johnston played a significant role in shaping the community, serving as a founding organizer of the Norwalk School District and as a school board member from the late 1880s until his passing in 1917.

At its peak, the surrounding property encompassed up to 200 acres of grapevines, prune orchards, avocado groves, and citrus trees. Today, the Museum is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and offers a unique window into Norwalk’s early days.

The interior features family heirlooms, photographs, period furnishings, and artifacts that reflect both the JohnstonHargitt family’s legacy and the broader history of the Norwalk area. Guided tours led by the Friends of Hargitt House docents bring this history to life with stories and insights into the region’s past.

Admission is free, though donations are gratefully accepted. The Museum may close during inclement weather.

Register for Adaptive Programs at the NASC or online at Norwalk.org/classes

This program is designed for teens, and adults with developmental, physical, and/or learning disabilities. Participants are encouraged to maximize their abilities through recreation activities with a social emphasis. All participants must have a current medical/emergency form on file with the department in order to participate. Ratio is five participants per one Recreation staff. Before registering for any off-site activity, all participants must attend three on-site activities. This policy is designed to help our staff get to know each participant’s behavioral and physical needs, ensuring that we can provide the necessary support during off-site events.
