Norwalk Recreation Brochure Winter 2026

Page 1

Dear Norwalk residents,

As we welcome the winter season, I’m proud to introduce our 2025 Winter Recreation Schedule of Activities—a vibrant offering of enrichment classes, youth and adult sports leagues, hands-on workshops, and family-friendly programs for all ages. Whether you’re learning a new skill, staying active, or spending quality time with loved ones, this schedule is designed to bring our community together through fun, learning, and connection.

We’re especially excited to invite you to the Hermosillo Park Groundbreaking Ceremony on Saturday, December 6 at 10 a.m. This moment marks the beginning of a transformative project featuring a state-of-the-art community center with banquet seating, an outdoor terrace, catering kitchen, snack bar, and a Public Safety sub-station. The revitalized park will also include two soccer fields, a soccer-themed playground, drought-tolerant landscaping, expanded parking with EV charging stations, a walking path, and advanced stormwater management infrastructure. Join us as we kick off this exciting investment in Norwalk’s future.

After the groundbreaking ceremony, join us in the evening for our annual Holiday Festival & Tree Lighting from 6 – 9 p.m. at its new location: the Norwalk Arts and Sports Complex (NASC). The perimeter of the NASC will be transformed into a winter wonderland, complete with live entertainment, crafts, games, a sledding area with real snow, and a spectacular 30-foot tree lighting. Santa, Mrs. Claus and their elves from the North Pole will also be present to ring in the season, and take holiday photos with families.

All these events are free and open to all ages, so bring your family, friends, and neighbors to celebrate together. Let’s make this holiday season bright and build lasting memories as a community.

Wishing you a happy and safe holiday season!

Sincerely,

D.D. JOHNSTON-HARGITT HOUSE MUSEUM

12426 Mapledale St • (562) 929-5521 • Free Tours on Saturdays, 1 – 4pm: Jan 17; Feb 7 & 21; Mar 7 & 21

Built in 1891, the D.D. Johnston-Hargitt House Museum is a two-story Eastlake Victorian farmhouse originally owned by Darius David Johnston, one of Norwalk’s earliest pioneers. Johnston played a significant role in shaping the community, serving as a founding organizer of the Norwalk School District and as a school board member from the late 1880s until his passing in 1917.

At its peak, the surrounding property encompassed up to 200 acres of grapevines, prune orchards, avocado groves, and citrus trees. Today, the Museum is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and offers a unique window into Norwalk’s early days.

The interior features family heirlooms, photographs, period furnishings, and artifacts that reflect both the Johnston-Hargitt family’s legacy and the broader history of the Norwalk area. Guided tours led by the Friends of Hargitt House docents bring this history to life with stories and insights into the region’s past.

Admission is free, though donations are gratefully accepted. The Museum may close during inclement weather. To schedule a group tour for ten or more, please call (562) 929-5521.
