We also talk about the difficulties of having your books in physical bookstores. The truth is that an author who is picked up by a bookstore may lose money…A LOT of money. The average shelf-life of a book is only three weeks. This makes sense when you look at the attention span of today’s audiences. That means that there is a good chance that your book could be liquidated by the retailer, and you get charged back for the sale. Read on and enjoy! Love and Gratitude, Juliet

CREATING THE SPACE AND TIME WRITE YOUR NON-FICTION BOOK

C

reating the space and time in your life to write a book can be incredibly challenging. I have spoken to many folks that start writing their book and never complete it because life just got in the way. I have spoken to several writers that wrote the first few chapters and then fell off the cliff, never completing the book.

STRUCTURE For many, a linear approach to writing a non-fiction book can make the book writing process an eternally long route. A more effective approach is a holistic nonlinear approach. This requires outlining all the chapters and segmenting the chapters with strategically placed subheads. The subheads not only act as a guidepost for the reader, but also makes the book development process easier. You then can begin developing each chapter with a small amount of content under each subhead, giving you the chance to see the flow of the chapters.

This means turning your phone off while writing.

SPACE It all begins with creating a conscious dedicated writing spot. There may be more than one spot and you may enjoy random inspirational writing spots but having a dedicated place where your primary writing is taking place will support the consistency needed to achieve your goal. Consider your writing time as meditative and deeply selfreflective. I highly recommend you keep your writing space clear of distractions.

RETREAT I highly recommend blocking off time for a writing retreat. Something special happens when you are truly away from most distractions and can go deep into thought and feeling. You may choose to take a weekend or even a week-long writing retreat. This can be ideal as you truly can sequester yourself from the predictable nature of your routine life. Nature can be a great inspiration bringing out your raw spirit and creative soul.

TIME Creating a conscious dedicated time to write each day and/or each day of the week is essential to create the habit of regularity. If you chose to create one specific time to write each day, then you need to set a goal for each day. Set a minimum word count or page count for each writing session. For some a small amount of dedicated time each day may not be sufficient, and they may choose to take a day of the week as a writing day.

What a Book Coach Can Do for You By Kristy Boyd Johnson

W

riting a book is a daunting task, even for seasoned writers. For new writers, it can feel like navigating a stormy sea, complete with lightning, thunder, and tsunamis. This is where a book coach can be your best friend. This is the person who, to belabor the metaphor, will captain the ship and guide you to safe harbor. A book coach is a combination of writer and editor. In a nutshell, when I work with a non-fiction client, we explore the author’s big idea, focus the topic of the book, figure out the anecdotes, statistics, quotes, and more. We brainstorm possible experts to write the foreword (when needed), and more importantly, how to craft the personal journey author story. Some of the big points we cover are: • • • • •

Planning Content Organization Flow What to include and what to leave out • What bogs down your writing It’s more complicated with a fiction client because, hey, fiction is a different beast. If non-fiction is a tiger, fiction is a tiger shark. It’s not as simple as content, flow,

4

Author

and organization. With fiction, we have to consider all the elements of fiction, including: • • • • • • •

Character Plot Story Point of view Narrative structure Genre Setting

For example, writing a sci-fi novel set 200 years in the future is completely different from writing a murder mystery set in the 1800s. And children’s books? A completely different animal (think unicorn). Every work of fiction is unique, but the good ones know how to follow the rules of structuring the story in order to build out a believable world for the readers. A good coach can help you develop the story so that the author doesn’t make

all the rookie mistakes that every newbie makes. I made them. We all make them. After all, if you’re going to write that book, you want people to read it. If it’s a big mess, you lose your readers. When deciding which coach will help you, ask yourself: • • • •

Do I like this person? Is he/she experienced? Does he/she listen to me? Is he/she honest about what’s working and what’s not working? • Do I trust this person to guide me? Always remember, all writers had to begin somewhere. I personally learned by trial and error, so it took me a lot longer to learn the craft. If I had had access to a good book coach, I could have shortened my learning curve by years, and gotten to the fun part a lot sooner. Happy writing!

Do you want to be a thought leader?

T

he phrase thought leader gets tossed around a lot, but what does it mean to you? To me, a thought leader is someone who is not only recognized by others as the goto expert in their field, but also someone who isn’t afraid to do things differently and stand up for what they believe in. You don’t just wake up one day and decide to be a thought leader, though. It’s a multi-step process that begins when you start creating consistent online content that provides value, insights, and positions you as an authority. The best part of becoming an author is that your book provides an added layer of proof of your expertise. It shows that not only are you an expert in your space, but you also wrote the book on it. The challenge that my clients often face is not knowing how to create that awareness and excitement about their book and brand online. When Hypnofertility Expert Lynsi Eastburn and I began working

together, she and her team had been trying to grow their following on Instagram and their email subscriber list. Their ideal clients are women who want to get and stay pregnant, and have tried everything to no avail. The challenge for Lynsi’s team was creating messaging that resonates with the women they desire to reach and inviting leads from social media to join them. Together we crafted a content marketing strategy and utilized her book, The 3 Keys to Conception: Pregnancy Against All Odds, to ultimately get more sales calls. And when her team began implementing the engagement strategies we worked on, they noticed an uptick in their following almost immediately. One thing I want to make clear is that stepping into thought leadership online doesn’t require being on every social media platform. I recommend getting really good at one and giving it your all. While Lynsi’s team found that their ideal clients were hanging out on Instagram, you may find that your ideal readers are on Facebook or LinkedIn.

When you select your platform of choice, it’s a good idea to utilize all it has to offer. For example, on LinkedIn, you can create engaging posts and upload videos, but to truly stand out, you can apply to use LinkedIn live. On average, Linkedin live videos get 7x more reactions and 24x more comments than video you upload natively to the platform. If you don’t get accepted the first time around, I recommend you keep trying. It took two applications for me to become eligible. Now I make a point of going live three times per week – twice by myself with 5 minutes of valuable tips and on Fridays, I host AUTHORity Marketing LIVE! where I interview authors about their books and discuss book marketing too. Being In Physical Bookstores Could Be A Losing Profit Strategy

T

he publishing business has certainly changed in recent years, with new technology and services that help predict book demand. One thing we haven’t seen much change is in the area of returns. Printon Demand (POD) services and digital platforms help us control our inventory, track sales, and keep orders in line, but even with all of these new changes, book returns are still a thing authors have to deal with. Understanding the process, the charges, and how returns work will help you determine your own route as an author.

6

Author

Hypothetically Speaking Barnes and Noble wants to place an order for your book. It’s the most exciting news of the week… and then you realize, they are only willing to sign on the dotted line if you agree to accept returns. You haven’t even considered this yet, because you’ve been solely relying on POD services and selling digital copies of your book. What do you do? Yes or No? The first step is to determine if you want to accept returns. If you decide not to, the chances of getting your book into big box stores lessens considerably. If you decide you will accept returns, your financial obligation increases considerably. Let’s break it down even further: 1. An order from a bookstore is NOT a final sale. The final sale occurs when your book is sold off of the shelf to a reader. Your compensation only occurs once this final sale is made to the reader. The books in limbo are your responsibility. 2. It’s usually a trial run. Big bookstores, like Barnes and Noble, order new authors and indie books to test their popularity and sales rankings. If your books don’t sell, those bookstores will want you to pay for the books they have left. 3. Print on Demand books cost less. Overall, if you are only printing a book

when it sells to a reader, your cost is the book and what you pay to sell. In this case, you lessen your chances of being in the brick and mortar stores, but your overhead cost is much less because you are not responsible for book returns. Different Types of Book Return Options There are typically three different options when it comes to book returns: • Non-Returnable: This means you will not accept returns from booksellers. • Returnable - Deliver: Your titles will be sold on a returnable basis. You will receive the physical copy of the returned book and be charged the wholesale price of the book, along with any shipping charges. • Returnable – Destroy: Your titles will be sold on a returnable basis. Returned units will be destroyed and you are not being charged to ship the books back to you. When you’re considering the cost of returns you want to think about two things: • The wholesale cost or the cost the retailer paid to purchase your book. • The cost to ship the book back to you if it’s being returned. Let’s say your wholesale price is $10 and the cost to ship the returned book is $3, you will be

paying $13 per returned book. If you cannot handle this type of overhead, putting your book in big box stores might not be for you. If you are willing to take this risk, it might speed up your book selling success. This really comes down to personal author preference and what they are comfortable with. Especially if you’re just starting out. A Few More Things The silver lining of this COVIDdriven global shutdown is how people decided to spend their extra downtime. You might be surprised to know, a lot of us spent it reading… or listening to books. Audiobook sales are the highest on record and up 4% from two years ago. Independent bookstore sales rose 5% - following a period we saw big slumps in brick-andmortar bookstore sales - which reminds us that bookselling is still a billion dollar industry. The information shared today is not to scare you away from putting your book on every shelf in America, should that be your goal. Rather, it is intended to educate and inform, so you are financially prepared for whichever direction you decide to go. Nobody likes book returns. Not the buyer, not the author, not the publisher. But as long as they are something we have to deal with, it’s best to be informed, and make the best possible decision for your book.

Media Magic Using Press Release Videos to Connect with Potential Clients and Sell Books

I

t is essential to build a community of loyal fans and connect with potential clients to sell books as an author. The best way to communicate with people is through the use of stories. One great way to do this is by using a press release accompanied by a high-quality video that will draw the attention of potential clients across the globe. This marketing strategy allows people from different industries to know the author and work as a marketing touchpoint. Videos help people connect with the product, service, or book being promoted, and this gives the seller an extraordinary opportunity to build a community and create raving fans. It is recommended to embed these videos on a website, which the author should own, allowing the viewer to explore various marketing materials. These often include blogs, media kits, social media handles, the speakers kit, and more. Driving traffic to the website is also a chance for the author to grow their list and database of contacts.

Many authors have written books that help people change their lives or communities. Readers often follow the author’s journey with a video series or podcast. Press releases can tell the author’s story in multiple ways. Four popular storylines to consider for a press release and video: 1. News or Announcements - Share the latest updates about the project, products, or services. 2. Human interest - People enjoy reading inspiring stories of hope and inspiration, also sharing stories of adversity and how someone may have overcome it. 3. Education - Millions of people are looking for ways to improve their lives and learn new skills. 4. Community giveback Sharing stories of community involvement, volunteering, and giving back. Individuals and readers are often looking to connect at a heart level to stories. The most viral stories are about human interests and overcoming adversity. This type

of press release allows authors to connect with readers emotionally, especially with a video. Press releases and stories using videos enable potential clients to see that the author is active in their field and using the latest technology; thus, they will be more likely to do business with the author as they get to know, like, and trust them. What’s Love Got to Do With It?

Author Laura Smith Biswas unpacks communication, love and how they inspire us to be better entrepreneurs.

S

elf-help and development books took over the marketplace in their glory days, secured in place by the likes of Jack Canfield and Tony Robbins, hell even Deepak Chopra. And in many ways, we are back in that space. With so many people home, changing directions as they leave their jobs, they’re looking for answers. And, really, pandemic or not, we all find ourselves seeking, for better lives, more love and higher achievement. Laura Smith Biswas made it her mission to look at the

foundational truths that drive these life improvements. Author of The Cosmology of Love, and being the communication expert and relationship guru that she is, in her book Laura delves into 70-ways to Experience Greater Love in actual tangible ways. Something as simple as identifying needs often goes unaddressed in our relationships - even the one we build with ourselves. When this piece is missing, receiving love becomes difficult, communication becomes near impossible, and doubt invades everything.

When it comes to authorship or entrepreneurship, this amount of instability on the inside, touches everything on the outside. There’s this whole world that exists, of emotions and securities or insecurities and love, and that invisible world drives just as much as everything we do see. And it’s long overdue that we take these unseen factors into careful consideration. Uncovering the ways that we desire to be loved will allow us to better communicate them and see the actions to foster deeper connection across all areas of our lives.

“Love isn’t an accidental thing, but something that thrives under certain conditions and then gives us the power to cultivate.” -Laura Smith Biswas When we think about what we truly want in life, we think about love. We think about a life with joy, security, strong bonds, and happiness - all byproducts of love. After navigating a divorce and continuing to stay business partners with her ex-husband, Laura is a real-life example of walking the walk she lays out in her book. If you’ve ever been

through a divorce or the end of a relationship, you understand just how difficult this can be. Add kids and business to the equation, you can either become bitter or forgive and press forward. One of those options relies on love, the other not so much. Often, love leads us to the high road, and then we have to choose to take it. Which isn’t easy when we live in a world often fueled by hate. We get so caught up yelling at one another, pushing our opinions, and we forget to actually communicate. Part of the process in Laura’s book breaks down how we can communicate better to forge stronger relationships. This is an invaluable asset when it comes to business and especially when it comes to the relationship, we have with ourselves. In her book, Laura points out that self-love is the essential ingredient in every great relationship.

Laura Smith Biswas, author of The Cosmology of Love: 70+ Ways to Experience Greater Love is focused on teaching tangible ways to love ourselves and experience more love in our close relationships. Her book has been features on ABC, NBC, FOX, and Market Watch and illuminates how to identify what your top needs are in receiving love, specific ways to help you stoke the fire of intimate relationships and improve your skillset in communicating love in all relationships. Her work reminds people that love isn’t an accidental thing we find, but something that thrives under conditions that we have the power to cultivate. Laura is an entrepreneur and mother of 3 daughters and lives in Westlake Village, CA with her partner of five years. She holds a MS in Spiritual Psychology from the University of Santa Monica and a MBA from Yale University.

Boundaries, self-love, good communication skills - these things make it so much easier to us to have more loving and transparent exchanges with the people around us. And once we have those skills, we don’t have to apply them, they become part of who we are and how we naturally interact with people. Book Link: www.waysoflovingbook.com

The Disconnect That’s Making Us Sick

I

t feels like everywhere I look, a new medical complex or doctors office is popping up. Statistics back this theory up. The National Health Council out of Washington recently published a report that says 133 million Americans, representing more than 40% of the population, are affected by an ongoing, chronic disease. A number they expect to grow to over 150 million. That equates to 6 in 10 Americans being ill. Laurina Carroll, TM teacher, and author of Perfect Health for Busy People, attributes these rising numbers to a disconnect. A disconnect, Laurina says, from our own traditions and knowledge of health. A disconnect driven by a health system that promotes pillpopping and “Band-Aids.” Healing Power Western medicine offers a lot of quick fixes - and sometimes that’s what we need - but more often than not, our body is telling us something foundational is off. And if we looked at our diets, our exercise, our mental and emotional health, we would find that the solution is not a pill. Breathing, pausing, listening to our bodies, giving our mind time to relax through meditation, there’s real healing power in these practices. Speaking of meditation, the basis for Laurina’s book is tied to Ayurvedic medicine and meditation, 5,000-year old techniques she insists provide relief in everyday life. “Transcendental Meditation is a very simple technique to relieve stress. This practice is thousands of years old but was brought back to the

mainstream by Maharishi in the 80’s and gained wide popularity after he taught The Beatles to meditate.” The Numbers Are Convincing A mind-blowing statistic coming out of the scientific studies completed around Transcendental Meditation shows that 20-minutes of this meditation practice actually reduces the cortisol in your body. Cortisol is your stress hormone and TM reduces this hormone by 30% alleviating stress and acute anxiety. Laurina has been practicing the Transcendental Meditation technique for 30 years and teaching it for the past 20, a direction that has totally changed her approach to health. “I don’t have one pharmaceutical drug in my home. I rely on natural remedies, and I am okay with giving my body time to heal and balance out, rather than finding a quick fix.” After earning her B.A. in Maharishi Ayurvedic Medicine and a Masters in Maharishi Vedic Science, Laurina spends the majority of her time teaching TM, a practice she says is the first step towards perfect health. Book Talk Laurina’s book, Perfect Health for Busy People, contains simple recipes, exercise routines, breathing techniques and other methods that readers can easily implement and practice at home. These practices, Laurina says, give readers more energy, a more balanced life and overall better health. It’s no secret that we are plagued with rising numbers in disease and even obesity. Men and women in their 40’s and 50’s are not as healthy as they used to be and are often given a multitude of drugs to mask issues, without adding to the patients quality of life. We are more than capable of reaching a place in health and wellness where we are thriving, rather than just prolonging life. “Ayurveda is an ancient system of health that offers profound insights into a more natural way of life.”

Perfect Health for Busy People is exactly what it sounds like: an easy-to-use guide for living a healthy, balanced life the Ayurveda way, no matter how hectic your schedule. As someone who balanced a full-time career with the demands of being a single mother for more than a decade, believe me: I understand busy! But I think you’ll find that following a few basic Ayurvedic recommendations actually helps you to feel better physically, think clearer, and enjoy more energy and emotional balance throughout the day.

She has practicing the Transcendental Meditation technique for 34 years and has been teaching it for the past 24 years. She has been featured on NBC, ABC, CBS, and FOX.

Are Your Videos Helping or Hurting You?

A

uthors often hide behind the written word. It’s where they’re comfortable, it’s what they know and it’s how their readers know them. But we live in a brave new world… where interacting and connecting online is a very important part of our author profiles. If you think about the people you follow online, you can probably separate them into two categories: the quick, unscripted videos and the overproduced, teleprompter videos. Neither one of these options is better than the other, however, it does depend on the platform where you’re sharing the content, and the audience you’re talking to.

14

Author

Nina Froriep started Clockwise video productions almost twenty years ago. What began as traditional production for high-end corporate videos has evolved into a place where business coaches go to grow their companies with consistent and easyto-implement video content. Nina’s expertise, spanning decades, has landed her some pretty amazing opportunities throughout her career - like working with Sophia Loren and John Malkovich. Which absolutely (over) qualifies her to school us writers and authors, even publishers, on how to use video in a productive way.

Video Lesson #1: Live video trumps everything else. Our social media algorithms like it when we go live and will work to put that content in front of more people, than just a regular post. If you wanted to duck into the shadows as you read that, you’re not alone. It’s not easy to be so spontaneous but it is much easier than editing and producing

LinkedIn tends to be more professional, while Facebook and IG live tends to be more casual and even sassy. content before you share it. So there are pros to this approach if you can get over the fear of saying the wrong thing or looking silly. (You won’t!)

Video Lesson #2: Make sure you know your platform. Content that is appropriate for the platform you’re streaming or uploading to is very important. LinkedIn tends to be more professional, while Facebook and IG live tends to be more casual and even sassy. Watch a few people who speak to a similar audience, see what gets hits for them. A little bit of research goes a long way.

Video Lesson #3: Consider the content. Of course this is the most important piece. It doesn’t matter what you wear, how you style your hair, or if you’ve got a blemish - if what you say doesn’t resonate with your audience. The point of the video content you share is to expand your expertise and help you connect with your listeners (and readers!) in an authentic way. If this isn’t the baseline for what you’re sharing, you’re wasting your time. Myth Busting Videos don’t have to be complicated or overproduced. Content doesn’t have to be over scripted or linked to a teleprompter. There are three very important elements to successful videos, and they are much more simple than most people think. It goes like this: 1. 2. 3.

Your audience needs to be able to see you. Your audience needs to be able to hear you. Your audience needs to be able to relate to you.

If you’re ready to put yourself out there in an authentic way, let Nina guide you on where to begin and how to make the most out of your video content online.

AUTHOR BIO I enable mission-driven entrepreneurs to grow their business with consistent and easy-to-implement video marketing through one-on-one coaching or peerlearning. I’m a filmmaker, producer and director with 30 years experience and a small business owner of 23 years. I’ve seen it all from the early days on independent features, to big national TV commercials, corporate mega-shows and many documentary films, including one I wrote, directed, and produced about Muslim kids in New York, called Abraham’s Children. In short, there’s no film- and videoproduction scenario I haven’t taken care of. Along the journey, I’ve met many, many awesomely wonderful people and a few bad-asses. All of them worth great stories. I’ve worked with stars like Sophia Loren, John Malkovich, and Wynton Marsalis, I’ve interviewed Fortune 500 CEO’s, I’ve worked on Emmy award-winning and Emmy-nominated documentaries, and produced hundreds of videos for ubercorporate shows. I’ve negotiated with teamsters, clients (big and small), actors, 1 crew, children, police officers, a few dogs, and one snake. On a personal note, I’m a sports nut – the kind that goes outdoors every moment possible. Central Park is my backyard and I know (nearly) every inch of it. I’m also a certified citizen pruner which affords me the privilege to prune, take care of, and advocate for the city trees of New York. I’ve lived in Harlem for close to 20 years, and since April 2011 I’m a proud owner of an American passport.
