Top Three Tips for Minding Your Mental HealtH WHen Writing a Book

Depending on your writing process or your path to publication, writing a book can take months to years. This means the exercise of writing and publishing a book is a marathon, not a sprint. And this marathon runs concurrently with the rest of life’s obligations and necessities–that’s a lot to juggle. I’ve seen my clients experience periods of exhaustion, stress, overwhelm, frustration, uncertainty, doubt…you name it. My authors care so deeply about the work they’re

putting into the world, that they set high expectations for themselves.

This might manifest as selfimposed deadlines they’re determined to reach at any cost or meticulous and critical self-review at each draft level to perfect their word choice. This investment in their final product is powerful to witness and certain to result in a well-developed manuscript. However, this is a double-edged sword. When high expectations and laser-focused dedication are the only speed, all those

tough feelings arise and start to chip away at the joy and excitement of authoring a book.

What’s the moral of this story?

An important part of your authorial journey is being aware of your mental health and factoring in self-care along the way. Since May is mental health awareness month, this seems a fitting discussion even in the writing and publishing space. Here are my top tips for minding your mental health when writing a book because your mind matters (in all things, always).

Tip #1: Take time to rest

When we strengthen a muscle group at the gym, we don’t typically hit the same muscle group every day. We alternate to give those muscles time to rest before the next power lift. When we get a cold, one of the best ways our body recoups is by giving it more time to rest. Your brain needs the same rest when you’re working on a book. So if you’re feeling burnt out or exhausted, or like each time you sit down nothing comes, or you keep writing the same thing repeatedly because you don’t know what you’re trying to say…these might be signs you need a break. And likely what will happen is in that resting period, new ideas, energy, and clarity will arrive. My advice: don’t wait to get to the point of exhaustion. Factor in a rest day each week from the start.

Tip #2: Create a trigger toolbox

Authors working on nonfiction, especially memoirs or genres drawing heavily from personal experience, may find writing a book can drum up a lot of memories and feelings. This

deadlines are great, but a healthy and happy author who wrote a welldeveloped manuscript with ease and flow is even better.

can be cathartic and healing, but also triggering. If you know you’ll be working on something deeply personal, build a toolbox for when the going gets tough. Your toolbox should include things that bring you comfort, make you feel safe, and restore a sense of peace within yourself. Only you know the right tools for you, but examples may include breathing exercises, soothing music playlists, affirmations to say out loud, a journal to dump your feelings, or bath bombs for soaking in the tub. My advice: Incorporate some of these self-care tools into your regular writing practice; you don’t have to wait to use them until you feel triggered.

Tip #3:

Put together a support team and have them on speed dial

Writing a book might be a solitary activity but that doesn’t mean you have to walk the path alone. Sure, you’re the only one whose butt needs to be in the writing chair pounding away at the keyboard, but you will need a few folks who have your back as you’re putting in the hours. Build a support team of your

Alyssa Berthiaume (usually known as Ally, but published under A.Y.) is the founder of The Write Place, Right Time, her virtual boutique of book coaching and ghostwriting services. Berthiaume serves leaders, entrepreneurs, and visionaries across North America and Europe in writing the books that will light up their world and ours. Berthiaume is also the award-winning author of Dear Universe, I Get it Now: Letters on the Art and Journey of Being Brave and Being Me and the co-author of Do Not Write a Book...Until You Read This one.

closest and most trusted who you know you can call on to bring you food, send you words of encouragement, take you out when you need a break, or simply call when you need an ear to listen to an idea, a challenge, a frustration, or an achievement. Someone on your support team might also offer you accountability if you need someone to hold your feet to the fire. My advice: choose your support team wisely. Only those who are 100% behind you in becoming an author should be allowed. There’s no room for the naysayers and the people who don’t “get it.”

To wrap this up, I want to offer one last bonus tip for those indie authors giving themselves self-imposed deadlines and driving themselves into the ground to reach them…your book will come when it’s ready. Forcing it won’t make it better. If the world has waited this long for your book, it can wait a little longer. So loosen up the reins. Deadlines are great, but a healthy and happy author who wrote a well-developed manuscript with ease and flow is even better. You matter as much as your book, so take care of yourself during the process.

Mastering YoutuBe Video teasers for autHors

The Power of Ten

The first 10 seconds of your YouTube video are crucial. They determine whether viewers stick around or click away. Think of them as the enticing opening chapter of your book – a captivating hook that promises a thrilling story. Here’s how to craft them for maximum impact:

• Intrigue with a Question: Pose a thought-provoking question related to your book’s theme. For a mystery writer, it could be “Whodunnit?” For a romance author, “Can love conquer all?” Spark viewers’ curiosity and make them crave the answer.

• Start with a Bang: Open with a dramatic scene or action sequence from your book, visually translated. A sci-fi author could showcase a spaceship blasting off, while a historical fiction writer might depict a gripping sword fight.

• Introduce a Problem: Tease the central conflict of your story. Let viewers glimpse the challenges your characters face, piquing their interest in how they’ll overcome them.

Beyond the Intro: A Cohesive Flow

The magic doesn’t stop at 10 seconds. Just like a well-written book, your entire video should be a seamless journey that unfolds and keeps viewers engaged.

• Titles & Thumbnails as Teasers: Craft captivating titles that hint at the video’s content without revealing everything. Your thumbnail should be a visual extension of this, using highquality images that entice a click.

• The Book Analogy: Think of your video as a condensed version of your book. Each section should flow into the next, leaving viewers wanting more. Offer valuable content, author insights, or sneak peeks at upcoming chapters to keep them coming back for the next episode.

By mastering these techniques, you’ll transform your YouTube presence from a static advertisement to a dynamic experience that draws viewers in and keeps them wanting more.

The Value of Community for Emerging and Growing Entrepreneurs

There’s something afoot in the entrepreneurial space, and some small business owners are spilling the beans on how they really feel about their business.

What started out as fun has turned into a nightmare. They are overwhelmed, burnt out, and exhausted. Endless hours with stress as a constant companion affords little time for homecooked sit-down meals with family, exercise, or thinking in any strategic capacity about the direction of their business.

They silently wonder how much longer they can work at this fevered pace. They’re beginning to feel trapped and can’t quit because of all they’ve invested. They no longer own their business – their business owns them –and they want a “Get out of Jail Free” card.

The complexity of business is accelerating - along with the escalation of isolation. Even Google is turning a cold shoulder. Like a Magic 8 ball, it gave us the answers to all our questions. Now? Vast amounts of time are lost digging through pages of information. Instead of clarity, they deliver chaos. What gives?

When my Dad opened his farm repair shop in a small, dusty town in North Dakota, he would visit his community banker at the local greasy spoon. Along with other owners of mom-and-pop establishments, they gathered over a cup of burnt coffee to discuss their situations and find answers to their most perplexing questions about growing their businesses.

When social media platforms emerged, communities sprung up in the form of groups. They became the go-to place to seek answers to our questions. That was until groups, overrun with promotional content, quickly became the place conversations went to die.

How are we expected to grow a business in a vacuum? The truth is, we can’t!

Minus MBAs and entrepreneurial degrees, we’re all just making this up as we go along. Granted, we have the likes of Bill Gates, Neil Patel, Arianna Huffington, Tim Ferris, and that guy over at Virgin.

We devour their words of wisdom, combing them like precious pearls to find the perfect treasure for our situation. We imitate their success—with little luck.

Why? We’re not them.

We don’t have gargantuan teams to execute our strategic initiative. We don’t have deep-pocketed venture capitalists to experiment unencumbered by such things as cash flow. We don’t have access to the best and brightest talent in search of big paydays and plush benefits. Lucky us!

What we lack resources, we make up for in passion, drive, and determination. We are a relentless group of renegades, rebels, and

We need a hook-up, not in the dating sense, but rather in the form of valuable connections. We need to hook up with guidance, wisdom, and counsel custommade for the size of our business.

We need community.

We need a place to build relationships with like-minded business owners who share interests and a common set of circumstances. We need a place where questions are answered, conversations are sparked, and relevant connections occur without the distraction and interruption presented by most social media platforms. We need a place to work smarter and grow faster.

We have a lot to do, and doing it together—learning from each other, sharing stories, and getting answers to questions even Google can’t provide—creates greater value for everyone invested in the community.

How to Make Your Publicity Sizzle This Summer

Your brand and business should be just as fun as everything else that comes with the summer season!

Most of the year, everyone looks forward to summer for the joy, relaxation, freedom, and fun. So how will your publicity represent those feelings that both you and your audience share?

Most importantly, how will you be sure that your brand and message are as hot as ever even during a season that most don’t associate with business?

Let’s get into some secrets that will help you create a real splash!

1. BrInG THe Fun InTo THe “eVery dAy”

Every author, business, and business owner has a unique

side to their business that the world never really gets to see. It’s time to pull back the curtain to find those opportunities.

What is it that is unique about you, your experience, or how you do business that you can showcase yourself?

Many of the most memorable publicity campaigns in recent years have involved showing specific aspects of the brand’s personality, regardless of whether it’s silly, heartfelt, or even serious. People want to understand both the who and the why rather than just what you do.

There’s almost nothing that’s off limits. What used to be “behind the scenes” should now be the center of attention.

As long as it’s specific to you, it’s something you can use to create content or connect with your audience further.

The more fun that you have while you’re going through this process of creation and communication, the more fun it will be for anyone that engages with you!

2. neTworK And ConneCT lIKe IT’S your SuMMer BArBeCue

Too many people approach their connections and networking in a dry, serious way. This often will make you feel forgettable.

Instead, use the inspiration that comes from the casual, laid-back vibe of a friendly summer barbecue. Your objective should be to make friends and long-term connections rather than just rattling off a pitch or exchanging cards that you (or they) never intend to review.

Don’t be afraid to share your stories, find opportunities to connect on a personal level, or

take the time to build a relationship where it makes sense.

Connection and kindness is truly how you’ll create winning relationships which inevitably become results.

3. CreATIVe CollABorATIonS CreATe FIreworKS

As you’re building relationships and developing partnerships, these are the perfect opportunities to go to press.

What new things are you working on together? How are you sharing these efforts with a greater audience outside of your typical community? Are your efforts newsworthy and are you sharing them as often as you should?

If you have already answered all of these questions, now it’s time to bring them to your collaborators. The more publicity both of you receive, the better!

Every step of this process can result in interviews, articles, press releases, write ups, or whatever else you both need to get in front of a much larger audience.

4. THe ClASSICS Are STIll Cool

Summer is a nostalgic season. There’s nothing quite like a classic - and the same thing is true in your publicity.

While it’s certainly important to stay ahead of the trends wherever you can, there’s a lot to be said for maintaining the classic, “tried and true” methods for what gets you publicity and attention.

I mentioned press releases earlier, which is an often forgotten method that still brings big reach and attention. Don’t forget to reach out to your local community media outlets like newspapers, radio, or television. Audiences are still tuning into these outlets and you’ve got a message to get to them!

As more and more people focus exclusively on what’s new, there’s a whole world of opportunity still waiting in what has worked for years.

Still looking for ways to bring more heat in all that you do? That’s exactly what I do every day. Let’s connect and create some summer magic together!

i’m not openly gay anymore

Iam tired of being openly gay. For a time, it served its purpose well. When it was still a badge of honor, it helped blaze a trail for those that came after me. I thank it for its service. And now, it’s time to retire the term “Openly Gay.” I’m ready to just be gay now.

Innocuous, “openly gay” carries a range of negative connotations on how we perceive and treat gay people. It otherizes gay individuals while perpetuating the idea that our identities are inherently different or, dare I say, abnormal. Here’s what else it does:

• It says that being gay is something to be declared; it’s a deviation from the norm that begs for special acknowledgment. It says that heterosexuality is the default, and anything else needs disclosure. Seriously, when was the last time you heard a person identify as “openly straight?”

• It implies a sense of bravery for simply living out our authentic lives. Yes, coming out is a challenging act for many of us. However, framing our postcoming-out existence as “openly gay” suggests that there is something inherently courageous about being true to oneself.

• It carries a whiff of privilege at best, an air of superiority about one’s choice at worst. Not everyone feels safe or comfortable being open about their sexuality, especially in environments where discrimination and prejudice are prevalent or being out can be dangerous. One’s race, socioeconomic status, and geographical location affect an individual’s ability to be open about their sexual orientation.

• It reinforces the notion of a binary understanding of sexuality, where individuals are

either openly gay or closeted. We all live in multiple systems –work, social, church, volunteer, and so on – and in each of these we may need or desire to present ourselves differently. We are openly gay in one system, implicitly gay in another one, and don’t talk about it in a third because it either doesn’t matter or we aren’t comfortable doing so (remember Don’t Ask Don’t Tell?). There isn’t always a onesize-fits-all moniker. Blanketing the entirety of one’s sexual orientation with this generic term erases the experiences of individuals who may not fit neatly into a single category.

Well, OK. So, what do we say instead?

We can refer to individuals, whoever they are, without saying “openly.” Doing so acknowledges their identity without implying that it requires special disclosure. Or we can use terms like “out and proud” or “authentically living” to celebrate individuals who have embraced their identities without reinforcing the idea that it requires bravery or courage. In doing so, we free ourselves from incorporating how out they are as part of their core identity, recognizing that they/we are multifaceted individuals with diverse interests, talents, and experiences beyond sexual orientation.

Until we retire this term, we will continue to stumble, trip, and fall on our forward march towards creating a society where all individuals are accepted and celebrated for who they are, without the need for labels or qualifiers.

It’s time to move beyond the limitations of language and embrace the rich diversity of the LGBTQ+ community. It’s time to stop saying “openly.” It’s time to just say gay.

Switch on the ReSt-DiGeStcReAte FRequency!

Courtesy of your subconscious mind, you breathe 24/7 without having to think about it Although, with your conscious mind, you can change how you breathe and how you breathe matters, especially when it comes to eating.

The subconscious mind is trained to make quick adjustments according to how you breathe. Shallow breathing sends a message to the subconscious to switch on the sympathetic system, AKA: the FightFlight-Freeze response. Calm breathing switches on the parasympathetic response, better known as the Rest-Digest-Create system. Like an AM/FM radio dial, your subconscious switches back-and-forth according to the “frequency” of your breathing.

For centuries we’ve defaulted towards the “FightFlight” which allowed us to survive. However, it requires hormones like cortisol to pump your heart faster, tighten muscles and slow digestion, allowing more energy towards the fight, flight or flee. The rise in cortisol is released in the fight or flight but today, there’s less fleeing, leaving cortisol to build with stresses linked to heart disease and hypertension, not to mention indigestion.

There was a study done on cats who were eating while x-rayed showing normal organ and digestive functions, until a dog entered the room. When anxiousness, stress/fear were ignited, their diaphragms and systems contracted to the point that many vomited.

Fortunately, though, when the Rest-digest-Create system or “FM” is switched on, hormones like serotonin are activated allowing superior digestion, absorption of nutrients, and feeling fuller sooner-a recipe for weight reduction and to banish the bloat. And, if the entrepreneur in you thrives on creativity, you might experience an uplevel there too.

While emotions can impact your choice of food like ice cream when you’re sad or pizza & wings when feeling celebratory, your emotions while you eat can also have impact on your health. What happens when you eat and multitask watching the news or driving in traffic in frustration? Are you in the FightFlight or Rest-Digest? You can only be on one or the other…not both.

Like the cats, your system can react in fear, even when observing others in fear. Watching someone in distress can create shallow breathing whereby your subconscious might respond as though it’s happening to you, albeit to a smaller degree. So, what happens when you’re eating under stress?

Eating while anxious, in fear, boredom, sadness, or guilt is likely done under Fight-Flight.

Just as there are many emotions there are just as many food choices the “emotional eater” reaches for. From ice cream, cookies, chips, and pizza…they vary in their carbohydrates, proteins, and fats too. Meaning emotional eating and negative implications may not be just about the food.

Author 14

In the last 40 years I’ve worked in alternative and non-alternative medicine, witnessing every diet imaginable. In the 80s carbs were “the best,” the 90s highlighted fats with healthy oils/omegas but then made a pivot to being “bad,” launching the low-fat-diet era. Then came “where’s the beef?” and proteins took their turn. The battle of these macronutrients—carbs, proteins, and fats continue with diets now trending towards plant-based eating—carbs in disguise making a comeback. Is the confusing billions of dollars diet world about to cycle through the macronutrients again? Meanwhile, diseases including mental health concerns are still on the rise!

It isn’t just what you are eating, it’s also what you’re not and or how you’re eating also!

Many aren’t eating enough micronutrients (vitamins, minerals, fiber) that are inside the macronutrients. As well, these nutrients are poorly absorbed if you are eating while driving, at the computer or skating across the kitchen in a hurry AND cortisol may be surging which so happens to be a fat storing hormone!

When Is Your Book Ready for Editing?

Writing a book is a daunting task, even for seasoned writers. It’s definitely not a process for the faint of heart.

Generally speaking, your book will fall into certain stages. The first stage is, of course, is that glorious part when you have a new idea and decide it’s time to write that book. You, as the author, most likely feel jazzed and ready to dive right in. For your book, this stage is when you likely have a zillion different ideas running through your mind.

If you need help focusing your idea and creating a publishable book, this is when you may want to hire a book coach or a developmental editor. This person can help you with your big picture idea and getting a solid outline to follow.

main topic of your book, and 2. which materials are appropriate to keep, and which need to be let go.

The second stage is the first draft, or what I affectionately call the “vomit draft.” During this phase, you are probably finding yourself trying to get everything you know down on the page. And you should! It’s actually a very important part of the process to do this. If you don’t allow yourself to “vomit” the vast amount of information you have in your head on to the page, you will likely end up blocked. That’s the worst feeling in the world for a writer.

Let’s say you have gotten a first draft down on paper. Now you have some editorial choices.

The first option is to write the second draft yourself. If you are the kind of person who is able to shift from writer mode into editor mode, then this is a good option. The difference is that, in the second draft, you have to let go of certain things and focus on 1. the

For example: say you are writing a book about natural healing. This is an extremely broad topic, and way too big for one book. So you decide to narrow the focus to healing your body with natural foods. Better, but still too broad. Now you focus in on healing breast cancer with food. Now you have a focused topic and a clearly defined audience. Armed with that information, you now dig into the second draft. At this point, you must be brutally honest with yourself about what’s working and what’s not working.

This is when the services of a developmental editor can be very helpful. This person will help you construct the book into a form that is highly publishable. They help you with flow, consistency, clarity of your ideas, and making sure the reader experiences what you want to convey.

Once you have a viable second draft, it’s time to get a proofreader. If you have worked with a developmental editor, you can skip line editing and go to proofing. If not, then ask for a line edit (which includes proofing the copy). This person comes in with fresh eyes and catches all the little boo-boos that all authors miss when writing their books. Make no mistake – you want a really good proofer to go through your manuscript because you, dear author, WILL miss things. We all do.

Good editors are a writer’s best asset. After all, if your book is a big mess, you lose your readers. That’s a bummer that can easily be avoided.

Happy writing!

Maximizing Your Marketing Budget:

Tapping into Free Publicity for Authors

Many authors face the challenge of limited resources when promoting their work. Crafting a successful marketing strategy often involves a delicate balance between budget allocation and tapping into free publicity opportunities. In this article, we’ll explore how authors can make the most of their marketing budget while leveraging free publicity channels to enhance visibility and reach.

define your objectives:

Before allocating any funds, it’s essential to establish clear marketing objectives. Are you aiming to increase book sales, build your author platform, or establish yourself as a public speaker? Identifying your goals will help you prioritize where to allocate your budget and where to focus your efforts in seeking free publicity.

Budget Allocation:

While it’s tempting to allocate a significant portion of your budget to advertising, it’s essential to consider a diversified approach. Allocate funds for participating in events or targeted online advertising campaigns on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, or Amazon. Remember to include resources for critical marketing activities such as website development, professional editing, and cover design.

leverage Social Media:

Harness the power of social media platforms to engage with your audience and amplify your message. Create compelling content that resonates with your readers, share behind-the-scenes insights into your writing process, and participate in relevant conversations within communities. Utilize hashtags and tagging features to expand your reach organically without spending a dime.

Cultivate relationships with Influencers and Bloggers:

By strategically combining paid advertising with organic outreach tactics, authors can effectively reach their target audience and achieve their marketing objectives without breaking the bank.

Identify influencers, bloggers, and book reviewers within your niche and reach out to them with personalized pitches. Offer them free copies of your book in exchange for honest reviews or guest blogging opportunities. Building authentic relationships with influencers can significantly amplify your book’s visibility and credibility among their followers.

Tap into Podcasts and Interviews:

Explore opportunities to appear on podcasts, radio shows, and online interviews to discuss your book and share your expertise. Research podcasts and media outlets that cater to your target audience and pitch yourself as a guest. Many podcast hosts constantly seek fresh content and are open to featuring authors, providing a valuable platform for exposure at no cost, especially if you agree to help promote their show.

Harness the Power of Content Marketing:

Create compelling and shareable content about your book’s themes, inspirational insights, or research. Start a blog on your website, contribute guest posts to relevant blogs and publications, or produce informative videos for platforms like YouTube. By consistently delivering valuable content, you can attract organic traffic to your website and establish yourself as a thought leader in your field.

engage with local Communities: Pay attention to the power of local marketing initiatives. Participate in your area’s book signings, author readings, and events to connect with local readers and bookstore owners. Engage with local media outlets such as newspapers, magazines, and community newsletters to secure coverage of your events and book releases.

encourage word-of-Mouth Marketing: Encourage your readers to spread the word about your book by offering incentives such as exclusive content, discounts, or giveaways for those who refer friends or share your book on social media. Wordof-mouth remains one of the most potent forms of marketing, and leveraging your existing fan base can generate significant buzz at little to no cost.

While having a substantial marketing budget can undoubtedly enhance your promotional efforts, there are numerous ways for authors to tap into free publicity channels to maximize their book’s visibility and impact. Memoir Mastermind:

Crafting CoMpelling StorieS for Your ideal reader

Recently, I began hosting a memoir mastermind. Consider it a support group for those that are in the process of writing their memoirs. It was our first session and none of the participants had started writing yet even though their desire to write was clear. The abundance of stories that they could tell was overwhelming. Understanding that they needed a process, I shared a few ideas on how to narrow down the stories that they could tell.

First and foremost, identify your ideal reader. What do they do? What makes them tick? What problems do they have you can help them with? All of this matters when determining which stories to choose. For instance, if your audience isn’t adult, then you may want to consider not sharing adult stories. If your ideal readers are not tech savvy, then writing about technology stories might lose them. The reading level and experience level of your ideal audience should definitely be a factor when choosing stories.

Once you have your ideal audience identified, brainstorm all of the stories that are applicable. You can use a whiteboard or a mind map. Let this flow freely and don’t concern yourself with an outline. I am a huge fan of not having a ton of structure as this point because it gives you the freedom to be open to new connections. I understand some people need an outline, but if you do, please don’t dismiss epiphanies along the way because they don’t fit the outline. Writing from a mind map leaves you wiggle room for worthy additions.

Another way writers can brainstorm is with Post-Its Notes or index cards. If you write down each of the stories on a different post it, then you can add them to the posterboard (which you can fold and travel with you if you work in more than one location). They don’t necessarily have to be in any particular order yet. It’s a great visual to see all of the potential stories you can write in one place. When you are typing away at a computer, you don’t

always get that same satisfaction. Oh, and if color coding is a thing for you –have at it. This is fun to do with different colored post its or same color post it with different color markers.

Once you take all of the Post-Its off, then put them back up in a more organized way that makes sense for the book. You get to see a natural order to them and discover themes that stick out so you can begin to organize them. That is where you will see chapters or parts emerge. The Post-Its Notes are easy to rearrange. This method will also help you identify gaps in information much quicker. Once you have a structure in place on the posterboard, move the stories around that you just wrote on the computer. If you have any places to add or subtract, this is the phase of writing to do that.

In this rough draft stage, it is always good to ask if the story will be meaningful to your ideal reader? Does it illustrate a lesson that you want them to learn? Will it provide insight that they need or have been searching for? With every choice you make in life, you could tell a story about how or why you did something and what happened as a result. Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. If the story doesn’t heighten the readers experience, then consider chopping it. It is better to tell fewer, more meaningful stories than to fill page after page with material that truly doesn’t apply. This also is relevant for how many stories of the same theme do you tell? If you can write one or two that drive the point home, don’t feel compelled to tell fifteen about the same topic.

These methods can be used when you are writing a memoir, but really when you are writing anything. They are great tools to help you boost your creativity and access your learning styles if you are a visual or kinesthetic learner. There is no limit to how or when you use them in the writing process. Let me know if you have used these techniques in the past or if you have a unique way of organizing your storytelling. I love learning about other’s creative process.

We’re going to talk about the four types of podcast guests that inject fast growth to your first 100 episodes. The first two of these are:

1. Industry Celebrities

2. Funnel Guests

This is the first of two articles about using a four-guest type strategy as a “first 100 episodes” method. It’s important to give your show growth broad opportunities in the beginning. Some of you may put more heavy emphasis on one type than another depending on your show purpose, but everyone’s business must maintain consistent and constant authority and lead generation.

This article will cover the first two guest types.

The industry celebrities are the ones who have better placement than you, better market share than you, have better positioning than you. They give you credibility and standing in your niche.

You may need a ratchet up to get to the top celebrities. It took me about 110 episodes before I was able to get Pat Flynn on my show, The Binge Factor. He is a major podcast coach, and in fact was the coach that I followed before starting our very first show in 2014. Bringing him on the show was important to me. It takes time, so be patient. Always be looking for the ones that are just a step beyond you and going to help you build your authority and reach the level of your ideal industry celebrity guest.

You want each industry guest to be an ideal match, and also to help lift

you up. You want them to share you with their audience because you know they have a bigger one than you do. They have a more prestige than you do. When you’re starting a new show, getting industry credibility as fast as possible is essential.

Funnel GueSTS leAd To FASTer PodCAST MoneTIzATIon

The second type is more successful when you’re using your show as lead generation for your core business. If I want to get potential clients from my audience, it helps to get potential clients from my guests first, while I build a large enough audience for lead generation.

Here’s my funnel process: a) I offer guests the publicity opportunity with an interview on my show; b) I demonstrate my professionalism with valuable (non-salesy) prep before the interview; c) I build a rapport over the course of the interview; and d) I invite them to an opportunity for a postinterview assessment, joint venture, or sales enrollment conversation depending on their level of interest garnered over the course of the interview call.

When people talk about monetizing a podcast, this is the most lucrative way. You’re connecting with a potential client and serving your listeners, too. You can start sales conversations from episode one, while building one-tomany lead generation content that lives on in your show, website, and social channels.

I typically give advice to my guests on air. When I do that, my listeners start to think, “That was a brilliant suggestion. If the guest needs that, then I need that too.” It breaks down

Part 1

barriers with your guests. It makes them much more receptive to having a conversation earlier, and they may ask for the sales call before you do.

Providing free (and valuable) advice is a great way to build rapport with your guest and raise your perceived authority at the same time. You can then start to build a tighter profile for your guest interviews so that you can identify those who need your advice in advance. My personal guest conversion rate is 80% because I know that they have a need for us before I even invite them on the show.

When you’re first starting your show, you’ve got to give it time. You may want to shift into doing a batch of Industry Pros in a row because you need more authority in your niche right away, or a batch of Funnel Guests to boost sales in the short term. When I do a test batch, I lump them all together in a series of six so I can see enough results and feedback.

Give it some time and patience, and evaluate it based on guest sharing, engagement, and not just the immediate conversion numbers. The stats can sometimes be anomalies. For example: a potential client might not share as much on social as an industry celebrity might, lowering listener growth and engagement. However, that potential client might make a valuable referral that leads to sales and not just leads. Look at it from all angles to evaluate how this is working for you and your current goals.

Next month, the two more podcast guest types that will inject fast growth into your brand or business.
