Three Things You Might Not Be Able to Write Right Away

By A.Y. Berthiaume There are a few things that readers see first when they begin to engage with a new book for the first time. They’ll take in the title (and cover art), the book’s description, and maybe turn to the introduction and read the first few sentences. But just because these are the things that readers might see and spend time with first doesn’t mean you need to write them first. In fact, I would encourage you not to. Or, at the very least, not get attached to anything you write.

Titles, descriptions, and introductions are going to be informed by the main content (or body) of the book and until you’ve written it, you won’t have it to refer to. So I say, go after the stuff you know and write that first. Having the main body of the manuscript drafted will help you produce a better title, description, and introduction in the long run.

Titles Your title is one of the most critical promotional assets for your book so there’s no sense rushing to figure it out or forcing something that doesn’t feel right. While it’s the shortest combination of words you’ll write in the process of working on your book, they have the biggest job to do—hooking the interest of your ideal reader so they want to open it up and spend time with it. You can’t settle for a title that makes you go, “Meh,” or “Fine,” or “Okay.” You want a title that makes you go, “HELL YEAH! THAT’S IT.” Sometimes, you can’t get there until AFTER you’ve written a majority of the manuscript.

The manuscript informs the title. There maybe be some recurring phrases or themes that make for a catchy title or a direction to go.

Descriptions Your book description might live on the back cover of your book alongside your bio and endorsements or somewhere alongside the cover image on an online retailer’s site. Often after your title has hooked the interest of your reader, they’ll flip the book over (or scroll) to read the description. These descriptions are usually one paragraph, two at max. But it can be pretty hard to really boil this down or be exact when you haven’t written an iota of your manuscript yet.

Introductions Lots of nonfiction books begin with introductions that set up the premise and promise of the book for the reader. They introduce who you are and why you’re the best person to be writing this book and who your reader is and why this book might matter to them. Those pieces might be easy enough to know before you get going, but being able to succinctly summarize what’s in store for them or how to best engage with the book, will be difficult without juicy innaards being written yet.

Moral of the story…Instead of writing things in the order of how they appear in the book, start with what you know (the main arguments and middle content) and return to these other pieces later. And, of course, if you want to add in some placeholder text for these three pieces, go for it. Just be mindful that where you start is often not where you end. That’s why writing is an iterative process. So whatever you develop in the first instance, be prepared to edit and revise until you get it all exactly where you want it.

4. Ignite the Transformation: • Objective: Identify the core message or breakthrough insight that changes the audience’s understanding or perspective.

• Implementation: Encourage the audience to take specific actions following your talk. This final encouragement should resonate through your closing sections, offering a clear path for ongoing engagement and action.

If you’re anything like me, you probably have a wealth of great presentation ideas swirling in your mind. You might possess years of valuable experience and knowledge you’re eager to share. Alternatively, you might find yourself tasked with giving a presentation on a topic you’re unfamiliar with or navigating a new industry altogether.

Before speaking about any topic, you will want to learn as much as you can about it by conducting your research.

Becoming familiar with other aspects related to your specific speech topic will also raise your level of confidence. Even if the topic is familiar, you may still want to do some effective research to ensure that you are giving the latest and most

up-to-date information. This research will help to narrow down exactly what you are going to talk about.

AI has opened up a whole new world to anyone thinking about giving a presentation.

The days of having to go to a library and spending hours searching through different resources are long gone. The simplicity and ease of AI has replaced those days. You have a world of knowledge at your fingertips - so get to it and use it! To have the technology that we have today, we are absolutely blessed.

When you are gearing up to do your research, you must determine what your desired outcome is for your

presentation. What do you want the audience to know, do, experience or change?

Here are six types of presentation outcomes.

1 Informative – This is factdriven. It is not intended to provide complicated or controversial information.

2 Instructional – Your desired result is for the audience to have clear directions or to follow specific orders.

3 Arousing - Your purpose in an arousing presentation is to make people think about a certain problem or situation. These are usually hot topics such as politics, environment, sex, religion, or money.

4 Persuasive - Your purpose in a persuasive presentation is to convince your audience to accept your proposal or desired outcome.

This offers real solution(s) to a challenge, controversy, dispute, obstacle or problem.

5 Decision-making - Your purpose in a decision-making presentation is to move your audience to take your suggested action. A decisionmaking presentation presents ideas, suggestions, and arguments strongly enough in an attempt to convince an audience to carry out the recommended requests.

6 Inspirational / Motivational – Your goal is to inspire or motivate your audience to make a change in their life. The objective is for the audience to feel good and feel inspired to take actions steps.

Warning: Be careful not to spend so much time researching that you never get started on the actual presentation!

It is easy to fall into this trap because researching can be easier than actually starting the process of creating your actual presentation.

I have witnessed several people spend countless hours, even years, performing research and preparing their presentations.

They should have taken the time to find out whether people would actually take the time to attend their presentation topic.

After all the years of research, they may discover that no one really cares about the topic anymore. They just wasted years of their life to discover people weren’t interested in listening to their talk. Believe me. This happens.

Knowledge alone will not create results. Be committed to getting results!

Take time to research your topic and your audience.

What is the Difference Between a Ghostwriter and a Book Coach?

A client asked me why I switched my focus from ghostwriting to book coaching. The difference between them is subtle, but distinct.

A ghostwriter is a professional writer who actually writes the material while the client (aka: the person who hires the ghost) gets the author credit. It’s a misconception that the ghost just somehow magically comes up with the material. A ghost may interview the client, work from their notes, or any other of dozens of ways that the ghost is given the information to form into a publishable book.

Why would someone hire a ghost? The two main reasons are usually that the client does not have the time to do the project, or that they feel they do not have the writing ability. These are the clients who would rather pay for the service than go through the stress of writing a book.

On the other hand, a book coach is a person who walks with the client through the process of writing the book. The coach helps the author to clarify ideas and pull those ideas together into a form that makes sense.

The coach can help a new author find their own voice as well as help them develop writing skills for themselves.

In essence, a book coach assists the author with both the project itself and the process of becoming an author, while a ghostwriter does the actual writing for the author.

I have ghosted more than 35 books, but since making the switch to book coach/developmental editor, I’ve found it to be more rewarding to help people find their own voice and make their vision come to life.

Why? The author usually goes through a lot of anxiety. They have a great idea,

but don’t know how to execute it in a way that will be successful. The first part of my job is to help that author figure out the best way to approach the topic.

In nonfiction, that almost always is focusing the topic on one main idea, especially when the author is an expert in their field. The temptation is to put everything they know into one book.

That’s a whopper of a mistake.

The funny part is that, once the author chooses their focus and begins to write about it, they calm down. Their anxiety reduces and they feel more comfortable putting words on paper.

This is the power of having a focused topic. It’s much less overwhelming.

With fiction, it’s a bit more complicated because fiction is by nature more complicated. New authors tend to be all over the place because they don’t really know how to build a world or create interesting characters that work within that world.

In this case, the critical thing for a new author to learn is the narrative structure. Think of this like blueprints for a house. You can build any kind of house you want, but the blueprints provide the guidance so the builders do it correctly. The best part is that narrative structure is super fun once you get the hang of it.

Now I tell clients, “If you want it done for you, find a ghost. If you want to learn to do it yourself and build your author talents, go with the coach.”

Either way, make sure this is someone you trust and feel comfortable with, because writing a book is a big deal.

Can AI take the place of storytellers?

As someone who shares stories for a living, it is hard to embrace AI. I’m learning how to utilize it and find it to be a tool in my arsenal, but not a replacement for the others. I see it as an enhancement, and I appreciate having a new tool.

Over the next few months, we are going to go over the three tragic reasons your listeners can’t reach out to you.

This is about making sure you are getting connected to your subscribers or listeners and making it even easy for them to reach out to you.

The tech side of the industry is overrun with spam and bad actors that they have had to make this hard for real

people trying to reach their real followers.

Why wouldn’t we authors and podcasters want to make sure our readers and listeners can communicate with us in some way? The answer is, yes, we absolutely do want to connect!

You might want your connection to happen in different areas. You might prefer connection via email. Maybe you want them to follow you on

Instagram. It’s different if you’re a celebrity versus an independent businessperson or an entrepreneur but that doesn’t mean you don’t want them to connect with you.

Why would you spend all the effort putting your voice or message out there if you don’t want that direct connection?

Most podcasters and authors are not aware that they’re being held back. They’re committing technical forced errors that are making it hard for their listeners to connect with and find them.

This is what we want you to understand: People are listening to your podcast on a listening app or reading your book in their favorite reading app. That’s the primary way that they find you unless you’re doing all the work on the marketing side. Promoting yourself on social media or in your own email newsletter doesn’t count.

Chances are those people are already connected to you. The ones you really want are the ones who are not yet following you.

Connecting with people who don’t know you yet is how you grow your platform and business. More specifically, those might already be subscribers of your podcast but more likely are those who may have tapped into an episode, read an article, watched a video, and is checking you out, but hasn’t made

the decision yet to follow and connect with you.

Let’s dive into the first reason that you are being blocked from connecting with new subscribers.

You should have a special email for your show, one that’s publicfacing. Make sure that you have that email in your RSS feed and there is a way for you to make it public.

Tragic Reason #1: NOT HAVING A PUBLIC-FACING EMAIL ADDRESS The player apps are the biggest culprits holding podcasters back and they are doing through your hosting platform. The number one technical blocker is your email address.

Apple, for example, claims that they were trying to help privacy concerns and spam email issues by hiding the main contact email address for your show. I have a special email address for outreach from my show (called a “publicfacing email”) because I want to make sure people get a quick response from me. If there is no email listed, then my listeners be blocked from reaching out to me without having to do a lot of work to find me. Additionally, it sends the message that I don’t want to talk to my listeners. I value my privacy over their connection.

This is the thing: most podcasters are not listeners of their own show.

You do not listen to your podcast.

You’re not checking out how the app works. You’re not seeing and experiencing your show like a listener. You will be making a tragic mistake as a podcaster if you choose to hide the email address, thus blocking the only way to reach you directly from your show.

Those hosting companies and Apple have decided that they want to make the default hidden so no one can reach out to you. It is in their best interest to control you and your subscribers, but it is not in your best interest.

I understand some of you have privacy concerns or are sick of the spam too. In this case, don’t give out your personal or main email address. Give out one that’s created just for the show. We all want our listeners to communicate with us because being an engaged host encourages a loyal listener, and loyalty sells books, programs, and more.
