Diwali is a time of renewal, reflection, and connection, where homes are adorned with diyas and rangoli, sweets are shared, and prayers are offered to deities. Diwali, also known as Deepavali, is one of the most significant festivals celebrated across India and by Indian communities around the globe. Often referred to as the “Festival of Lights,” Diwali symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil. This vibrant festival, deeply rooted in history and culture, offers a rich tapestry of stories, rituals, and meanings that resonate with millions of people.
Historical Origins
The origins of Diwali can be traced back to ancient Hindu texts, particularly the Ramayana and the Puranas. The festival has various interpretations and associations, depending on the region and cultural traditions.
One of the most celebrated narratives of Diwali centers around the epic tale of Lord Rama. In northern India, Diwali commemorates Rama’s return to the kingdom of Ayodhya after a 14-year exile, during which he vanquished the demon king Ravana. The people of Ayodhya lit oil lamps, or diyas, to illuminate the path for Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana, symbolizing the joy and relief at their return. This act of lighting lamps has evolved into a widespread practice during the festival, representing the dispelling of darkness and ignorance.
In southern India, Diwali marks the victory of Lord Krishna over the demon Narakasura, who had terrorized the heavens and earth. Krishna’s defeat of Narakasura is celebrated as a reminder of the power of good over evil, reinforcing the festival’s core theme.
Diwali also holds significance for various religious communities. For Jains, the festival marks the day when Lord Mahavira attained nirvana. Sikhs celebrate Bandi Chhor Divas, which coincides with Diwali, commemorating the release of Guru Hargobind Ji from imprisonment by the Mughal emperor Jahangir. This rich array of associations illustrates Diwali’s importance across different faiths.
Cultural Practices
Diwali is celebrated over five days, each day imbued with its unique significance and rituals:
1. Dhanteras: The festival begins with Dhanteras, a day dedicated to wealth and prosperity. People worship Lord Dhanvantari, the god of medicine, and often purchase gold or silver items, believing this act invites wealth into their homes.
2. Naraka Chaturdashi: This day, also known as Choti Diwali, commemorates Lord Krishna’s victory over Narakasura. It is marked by early morning rituals, including the traditional practice of taking a holy bath, followed by the lighting of diyas and the bursting of firecrackers.
3. Diwali: The third day is the most significant, featuring prayers to Goddess Lakshmi, the deity of wealth. Families clean and decorate their homes, lighting diyas and candles to welcome Lakshmi. The night is filled with celebrations that include feasting on festive foods, exchanging sweets and gifts, and lighting firecrackers, creating a vibrant
atmosphere of joy and festivity.
4. Govardhan Puja: The fourth day celebrates Lord Krishna’s lifting of Mount Govardhan to protect the villagers from torrential rains. This day involves preparing a special meal and creating representations of the mountain with various food items, symbolizing gratitude and reverence.
5. Bhai Dooj: The festival concludes with Bhai Dooj, celebrating the bond between brothers and sisters. On this day, sisters pray for their brothers’ well-being and prosperity, while brothers give gifts and promise to protect their sisters.
The significance of Diwali extends beyond mere celebration, encompassing spiritual, cultural, and communal aspects that enrich the lives of those who observe it.

Dr. Hakam SingH BHullar iS an inDo-CanaDian veterinarian originally from Saron, a Small village in tHe Sangrur DiStriCt of PunjaB, inDia. He graDuateD in 1986 from PunjaB agriCultural univerSity (Pau) in luDHiana witH a DoCtor of veterinary meDiCine (Dvm) Degree. following HiS graDuation, He ServeD aS a veterinary offiCer in tHe PunjaB government until He reloCateD to CanaDa in novemBer 1991.
Two years later, in 1993, he moved to Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, USA to complete his one year of veterinary internship. In 1995, he became a full-fledged, licensed veterinarian with the British Columbia Veterinary Medical Association (BCVMA, Regulatory Body) and opened his first clinic, Atlas Animal Hospital, in Vancouver, BC.
In the following years, Dr. Bhullar’s clinic morphed into a welcoming facility for newly graduated Punjabi immigrants to come, observe and learn. During an era where majority veterinarian immigrants were not accepted by the locals for positions of work or volunteering, he opened his clinic, home, and heart to assure them of acceptance in a foreign land. Indo-Canadian veterinarians arriving in Vancouver were guaranteed that they had a mentor and friend waiting to help them assimilate into the culture efficiently. Future generations of veterinarians were welcomed with open arms to Atlas Animal Hospital, where they were given an equal opportunity to learn, hone their skills, practice the English language, understand the business, and potentially partner with Dr. Bhullar financially in opening their own clinic in the future. Over the years, many young, Indian students have been employed at the hospital, while being given the chance to fully pursue other academia.
It had always been a dream and aspiring goal for Dr. Bhullar to make low-cost, affordable veterinary care available to all communities and their animals, within the Vancouver area. He created a system in which lower prices and more accessible business hours were offered to help those who could not afford their pet’s care financially. Dr. Bhullar eliminated the need for extra payment towards emergency hours and created an equal opportunity for all clients of different economic statuses to be able to provide the best care for their pets. His model changed the way that majority veterinary clinics are operated today in
the Lower Mainland.
Within a year of opening his first clinic, he also established his second veterinary clinic, Lansdowne Animal Hospital, in 1996. As the years progressed, he was able to successfully open several clinics, creating a chain for all IndoCanadian vets to comfortably settle in and provide care for animals. His dream was accomplished when he effectively founded numerous facilities in the Lower Mainland, offering such services. The number accounted towards a total of 20 veterinary hospitals, within the chain. This also included an innovative, state of the art, Mobile Animal Hospital, which he personally designed and created. This mobile clinic was the very first of its kind, in the history of British Columbia. It measured as a 22’ long, double wide, horse trailer with three rooms, offering a surgery area, dentistry exam set up and physical exam space.
Throughout all these years, Dr. Bhullar has been provincially recognized with numerous awards and titles:

From the success of many Indians being able to fully learn the skills needed and adjust into the culture and business, many individuals on the large association panels became upset, due to racial matters. The reputation of Dr. Bhullar, being a reasonably priced, honest, and caring veterinary doctor, created several competitors along the way. His volunteer work within the community

of offering pro-bono services to those who were underprivileged and could not afford treatments for their animals, was spreading like wildfire within the province. Other veterinarians of different races became unhappy by seeing the success of Indo-Canadian vets in their cities and started to form a silent partnership in wishing to eliminate the further influx of future Indians entering the field. BCVMA informed Dr. Bhullar that he needed to raise his prices and reduce his hours. However, the association refused to give this request in writing, for it was not a legal matter in their hands. In May 2004, to limit any further licensing of immigrating Indian veterinarians from India and other parts of the world, the association created a standard of the English Proficiency Exam requiring a high score from only foreign trained vets, to make the possibility of them practicing in British Columbia incredibly impossible. It was an exemplary act of racism from Caucasian leaders against foreigners specifically. This movement of racism was completely supported by the British Columbia Provincial Liberal Government.
In June 2004, a huge public demonstration, under Dr. Bhullar’s leadership, at the office of the BCVMA ensued with a large media uproar. He personally presented a cheque for $1.6 million Canadian dollars at the BCVMA’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) and challenged them all to take the English Proficiency Exam with the passing rate expected from Indo-Canadians. The entire team on the observing panel declined to attempt the examination. The governing body that was established to protect and support him, was working against all Indians to promote more Caucasian leadership and involvement. The Association continued their harassment of Dr. Bhullar, including unscheduled surprise inspections, orchestrating many cases against him, which costed him around $1.8 million from pocket to defend. During
this uphill battle, under cover tape recordings of conversations with numerous veterinarians in their own clinics, BCVMA Council Members and Registrar, and BCVMA’s own lawyer, Valerie Osborne, were made. These colleagues, who had sworn an oath to respect each other, were caught in hidden audio and video camera recordings, quoting:

In August 2004, Dr. Bhullar and a supportive group of IndoCanadian vets, filed his first claim against the BCVMA, with the Human Rights Tribunal, in Vancouver. In April 2009, the BCVMA admitted their first step of defeat in declaring on their website that there was “no need for the English Proficiency test.” This decision was made after Dr. Bhullar proceeded with a five-year long court battle, out of pocket, for future generations of incoming veterinarians. After the Human Rights complaint was filed, there were numerous threats against Dr. Bhullar to stop the H/R proceedings. The largest threat was of having his license revoked by the association. In December 2009, the BCVMA in an ultimate act,
and physical toll on both him and his family, Dr. Bhullar was finally vindicated. This victory was brought forward with the BCVMA spending approximately over $14 million on the case overall and having to give a formally written apology to Dr. Bhullar and his family.
The “Longest Human Rights Hearing in World’s History,” a Hearing that sat for 356 working days from 9am – 5pm, over the course of 11 years, had bfinally come to an end. Dr. Bhullar was cleared of any, and all charges laid by the BCVMA. It was clearly stated by the Judge that the BCVMA was guilty of “Systemic Racism” against Dr. Bhullar and the other veterinarians who had participated in filing the H/R claim with him against their Association.
based purely on power and racial cruelty, terminated Dr. Bhullar’s license and “Erased him from their Registrar.” At one point, Dr. Bhullar was invited to a meeting with BCVMA and offered a cheque of millions of dollars in exchange for “Drop the Human Rights case and we will give you back everything.” However, he did not accept the offer, knowing that this battle was not only for himself but for the future of Indian students that dreamed of practicing in Canada one day. For another excruciating 3 years, Dr. Bhullar lived with the daily humiliation of having his hands tied from the association. For 4.5 years he was legally forbidden to touch an animal in his own place of business. After battling them in court for 15 more months, since this decision, Dr. Bhullar was able to have his license reinstated. This battle took Dr. Bhullar to the Supreme Court of British Columbia, the Court of Appeal in British Columbia and the Supreme Court of Canada in Ottawa, Ontario to defend himself and others against racism.

This is the story of a battle by a group of IndoCanadian veterinarians, led by Dr. Bhullar. This is their struggle in stopping their racist regulator, the British Columbia Veterinary Medical Association, from using its legal powers to prevent them from becoming veterinarians and from continuing to practice their profession and serve their clients. The human rights complaints filed by these veterinarians resulted in an extraordinary hearing at the British Columbia Human Rights Tribunal. A hearing, which produced a 2000-page decision that took 3 years to write. This hearing led to the British Columbia Parliament having to advise the other 25 Professional Regulatory Bodies to change their policies for being more racially acceptable.
This is the history that Dr. Bhullar established for future, incoming generations of Indian veterinarians that dream of practicing in Canada efficiently. His struggles and journey led to paving the road for the rest of the professionals, across the world, that share his dream in providing affordable care with good quality. His contributions to the community locally and in Punjab are known and set an example of how professionalism should be carried towards the benefits of others. Dr. Bhullar is the definition of “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”

Dr. Raminder Kang has been appointed as the Director of Settlement & Integration Services. With nearly twenty years of experience in the social service sector, Raminder began his career as a front-line worker and has recently served as Senior Manager for Settlement and Integration Services at PICS. He is actively involved as a volunteer with
the Inter Cultural Online health Network (iCON), a community-driven initiative that promotes chronic disease prevention and management for multicultural communities across British Columbia.
In addition, Raminder has served as a Master Trainer with the Chronic Disease Self-Management Programs offered by the University of Victoria, delivering workshops across the province. He also hosts a daily two-hour evening talk show on South Asian Radio, allowing him to stay attuned to community issues and concerns. Raminder holds a Bachelor of Science and a Master’s degree in Arts, and he serves on the Board of Directors for The Canada Urdu Association, promoting the Urdu language in British Columbia.
Kanika Mehra has been appointed as the Director of Youth Programs and Community Services. With over seven years of experience in the nonprofit sector, Kanika brings a wealth of expertise in program development, project management, and strategic planning. Her commitment to supporting clients from diverse cultural backgrounds enables her to facilitate employment opportunities and life skills training, fostering successful integration into Canadian society.
Kanika holds multiple professional designations, including PMP, PMIRMP, PMI-PBA, and PMI-ACP, which reflect her strong foundation in project management, risk analysis, business strategy, and agile methodologies. Since joining PICS in 2018, her passion for youth empowerment and community advocacy has made a lasting, positive impact on both the organization and the communities it serves.
These appointments are an exciting development for PICS Society, reinforcing its dedication to enhancing community services and support for individuals and families in need.

Over the years, it might start to feel like these stubborn lids are getting stronger but for many people, the problem is that their hands and bodies are simply getting weaker.
t’s not quite that simple, but your hand grip strength is a crucial indicator of overall muscle strength and can reveal a lot about your health. Muscle loss, an often-overlooked aspect of the aging process, remains largely unaddressed, with symptoms like diminished hand grip strength commonly dismissed as a normal part of getting older. According to a multicontinental study involving a healthy elderly population, 17.5% of Indians experienced advanced muscle loss, also known as sarcopenia. This figure is considerably higher than in other Asian countries and Europe.
Sarcopenia and your health Sarcopenia, or advanced muscle loss, occurs when a person loses significant muscle mass along with strength and function as they age. Muscle loss isn’t just a condition for the elderly; it can start much earlier in life. In fact, beginning at age 40, adults can lose up to 8% of
their muscle mass per decade. After age 70, that rate may potentially double. In India, sarcopenia has been observed in one in three men and one in five women. Globally, an estimated 50 million people are affected by this condition, and this number is expected to rise to over 200 million in the next 40 years.
Measuring muscle mass
Why is measurement so important? Sarcopenia is often considered a hidden or invisible condition because, unless you test your muscle strength, you may not realize you’re losing muscle mass.
One simple way to measure muscle strength is through the chair challenge test, which can help you take timely corrective measures. The time it takes to complete five sit-tostands on a chair 43 cm (1.4 feet) high can indicate your muscle age. Chances are, you’ve never heard of such a thing. These conversations, while critical, simply do not happen. As individuals, we are hardwired to share our issues with our loved ones, yet certain discussions still take place in hushed tones.
Sexual wellness is one such topic. Because these issues are rarely spoken about, people often refrain from seeking treatment due to a lack of awareness and appropriate online platforms in the country.
Sexual health and performance are taboo subjects in society, especially for men, for various reasons. It is often assumed that sexual activity comes more naturally to men than to women. Britsusheela’s love for music began in infancy, when a simple transistor radio turned her cries into captivated silence. Her parents quickly realized that music was her soothing remedy. By age 13, her father, working in Dubai, sent money for a harmonium and music lessons.
Although debts took precedence, her mother ensured she joined classes, marking the start of her musical journey.
To keep her safe on the way to lessons, her younger brother acted as her protector, glaring at any potential distractions. Diwali, however, was another adventure entirely. Though she was initially terrified of sparklers, her father found a way to help her feel secure by extending one with a longer stick. Britsusheela eagerly participated in preparations, scrubbing brass utensils and taste-
testing sweets, though her lanternmaking skills often resulted in creations that looked more like alien artifacts than festive decorations.
On Diwali, she would don her new dress, spinning around to admire herself, feeling like a queen ready for celebration. Her rangoli designs, meant to be masterpieces, often resembled colorful blobs, yet she walked with pride, convinced that her neighbors admired her efforts.
Throughout her youth, music remained her true passion. Britsusheela participated in various
competitions, singing in multiple languages at events in Mumbai, Goa, and beyond. She collected prizes and certificates, each one marking a small victory in her musical journey.
As the years went by, her passion for music never waned. When she reached middle age, her son, Dr. Vijay Naidu, encouraged her to keep singing. With his support, she pursued her studies in Hindustani Music at Akhil Bharatiya Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, Mumbai. His encouragement helped her maintain her love for music, allowing her to continue performing and honing her skills.
