INVESTING IN THE FUTURE 2021 was another year marked by major change – we continued to adapt throughout the pandemic, respond effectively to the impacts of Brexit and readjust our ways of working as the world opened up. And while the wider food and drink industry has been undergoing a period of transformation, so too has Princes Group.

With a firm focus on future-proofing our operations and contributing to a sustainable future for British manufacturing, we successfully progressed and concluded several landmark development programmes throughout the year, while ensuring Covid-19 secure practices were established and maintained. These programmes have been completed across our Long Sutton, Cardiff, and Erith sites, with investment totalling over £160 million.

MESSAGE FROM OUR MD By placing consumers at the heart of Innovation at Princes, we’re putting our customers first

This investment in our future has provided state-of-the-art equipment, better energy efficiency and increased capacity and capability, and I am delighted that we have been recognised with accolades such as ‘Ambient Manufacturing Company of the Year’ at the 2021 Food Manufacture Excellence Awards. At the same time, we are unlocking innovation – we have introduced 108 new recipes at our Long Sutton site, for example, which are being produced through a new flexible canning line for ready meals.

INNOVATION AT OUR CORE By placing consumers at the heart of innovation at Princes, our new rapid end-to-end innovation process, Innov8

by Princes®, is also enabling the business to meet evolving consumer and customer needs. Recent launches include a new brand, Plot 9, offering plant-based meals to connect with a wider flexitarian audience, alongside a range of canned plant-based ready meals under our Princes brand, as part of broader plans to significantly expand our vegan offering.

Launched in 2020, the Innov8® programme has been made possible by a £5m investment in our state-of-the-art development kitchen and 6 strong team. In collaboration with specialist partner KICR, we’re delivering fast-paced innovation focused and on brand creation, product and packaging design, commercialisation, and channel strategy. This advanced approach – which has involved integrating a dedicated team across the business, leveraging insights from a bespoke online community of 3,000 consumers and merging our Research and Insights team with the Innovation department – is accelerating our NPD process and providing support to our customers, and we’re very excited about what the future holds.

Overseeing the success of these new developments is our new Chief Commercial Officer, Simon Harrison, who we were very pleased to welcome to the business this year to manage all sales, buying and marketing teams across the Group.

AN EMPLOYER OF CHOICE We have long-held our ambition to become an Employer of Choice and with a clearly defined Colleague Value Proposition – or what we refer to as our ‘give and get’ – Princes has become increasingly people-centric.

At a time of uncertainty, we were quickly able to work differently; ensuring that our colleagues were clear about what was expected of them and (importantly) what they could expect from us.

During the past 12 months we have seen a real acceleration across our People Excellence activity – from prioritising colleagues health and wellbeing by adopting new and pragmatic measures and agreeing increasingly flexible ways of SMART working to launching an on-demand learning and development platform to support continuous learning to driving our inclusion and diversity programme for example.

With all that effort and colleague resilience in evidence, I am particularly proud that this is the year Princes was recognised as ‘Employer of the Year’ at The Grocer Gold Awards. It is a tremendous accolade made all the more significant by the positive (and honest) assessment of the expert panel. And actually, our people awards don’t stop there – Food Management Today named our Commercial Graduate Scheme ‘Best Training Initiative’.

The progress we have made is all thanks to the tremendous efforts and resilience of our colleagues, they really do make Princes a great place to work.

ADVANCING OUR ENVIRONMENTAL CREDENTIALS In line with our vision to ‘Proudly help families to eat well, without costing the Earth’, Princes continued to build on a longstanding commitment to sustainability throughout our operations in 2021, launching a new ‘2030GreenGoals’ initiative.

As part of this initiative, we have committed to achieving carbon neutrality across our UK and international operations by 2030, building on a 23% reduction in carbon emissions since 2014/2015. Over the next 10 years, we also aim to increase internal energy generation up to 50%, while reducing water general waste and food waste - with a focus on improving efficiencies and driving towards self-generation and renewable energy, such as biogas from waste, as well as reducing and reusing materials.

We have made sustainability improvements to our products too – switching all Princes tuna multipacks to cardboard sleeve packaging has removed 96 tonnes of plastic, while our Napolina brand has moved its core pasta range into recyclable cardboard packaging, removing up to 200 tonnes of non-recyclable plastic.

Proactive engagement across the global seafood industry to help protect ocean ecosystems also continues to be a crucial element of our sustainability efforts. This is why we continue to take an active role in the debate over Indian Ocean (IO) tuna, having announced that we will take a 50% voluntary cut in IO sourced yellowfin tuna due to concerns at stock levels.

LOOKING AHEAD I am extremely proud of what we have accomplished as a business during a challenging, but transformative year.

While continuing to navigate the longer-term impacts of Covid-19 and Brexit, we are well-positioned for a bright future, and look forward to delivering further growth and success in the months to come.

Additional projects completed in 2021 will also see a reduction of 700 tonnes of plastic a year from soft drinks and edible oils bottles, and continued efforts to reduce food waste, as a member of the Champions 12.3 coalition, have led to a *13% decrease across our global operations in the year to March 2021.

Home to our food site in Cambridgeshire, producing canned products including baked beans, pulses, pasta, vegetable sauces.

The site is also a purchaser of locally grown produce.

Located in rural Lincolnshire, this is our largest food production site in the UK. They produce baked beans, vegetables, fruit, pulses, pasta and meatballs in can sizes from 145g to 3kg. The site is also a major purchaser of locally grown British produce from independent farms.

Princes Tuna Mauritius (PTM) is one of the most technologically advanced tuna processing facilities in the world.

It was the first global supplier of canned tuna to hold the SA8000 certification for social accountability, marking an international standard in working conditions and practices.

PTM Marine Road produces tuna loins for export to canneries and pouches for foodservice and industrial customers. The PTM sites provide a strong base from which to compete in the global tuna market and drive sustainability initiatives in the Indian Ocean region.

This site is one of the most modern tomato processing facilities in Europe. The 120,000sq metre factory has the capability to process in the region of 300,000 tonnes of fresh tomatoes annually. The vast majority of fresh tomatoes used at Foggia are picked locally.

Glasgow supplies major retailers with canned soft drinks through the use of a high-speed efficient production line. Our team in Glasgow has expertise in UK and international markets. The site has achieved a range of accreditations as a high quality and efficient factory.

This is our largest UK soft drinks production site and leading producer of customer own brand still and sparkling soft drinks, offering a large variety of flavours and pack formats. Bradford is our centre of excellence for fruit squash, manufacturing products for our Jucee brand, we also produce a wide range of customer own brand squash.

The Cardiff site is a centre of excellence for chilled and ambient juice manufacturing.

Covering both Princes and customer own brand products with format sizes which include both 1&2 litre in the chilled range plus 1 litre & mini in the ambient range.

This site forms the hub of our cooking oil production and is located immediately adjacent to one of the largest seed oil crushing and refining establishments in Europe.

It bottles Crisp ’n Dry, Flora products and Mazola Corn Oil, and customers own brand products.

Recognised as the UK’s leading olive oil production facility.

The majority of our customers own brand products are blended and bottled here. These products are olive oils, balsamic vinegar and speciality oils in a range of packaging. Belvedere is the largest producer of olive and speciality oils in the UK.

Located in the Polish North West region of Wielkopolska, Szamotuły is the newest addition to the Edible Oils portfolio, producing branded and customer own brand rapeseed oil. The site is fully integrated with an adjacent refinery complex. The site serves customers across Eastern Europe.

CUSTOMER AND CONSUMER FOCUS With an extensive brand portfolio and proud history of manufacturing customer own brand products, it’s imperative that we stay not just close to, but fully connected with our customers and consumers, keeping them at the heart of what we do

BRAND In 2021 we have seen a huge focus from our brands on sustainability. Princes’ tuna TV campaign focussed on plastic removal and also launched the first of a range of plant based ready meals alongside a new range of plastic free fruit snack pots. To add to our plant-based collection we have also launched a new brand concentrating solely on plant-based foods including ready meals and snack pots, Plot9. Napolina not only took all of their pasta into cardboard packaging but moved oils into 100% recycled PET bottles, while our Jucee squash range rebranded and also moved into bottles with 100% recycled content, playing a part in the move to a more circular economy.

To provide transparency about where our products come from and how we’re working with suppliers to address modern slavery risks, we’ve published details of all our direct finished goods, raw material and packaging suppliers. As well as showing the location by product category, it shows the total number of workers and the gender split.

INNOVATION We have a leading position on Italian tomatoes and have taken huge steps in transforming our supply chain and tackling human rights issues in Italian agriculture.

We are engaged in Fishery Improvement Projects (FIPs) to drive global tuna fishery improvement and to attain MSC certification.

We have a leading position on recycled PET in our drinks and oils and the average recycled content of the plastic in our products is 45%. We have also moved our Princes Tuna multipacks and Napolina pasta from plastics to card wrap.

Princes is investing £5 million into our strategic initiative ‘Innov8 by Princes’ to encourage faster development of new products and embedding consumers views into the innovation process. We have partnered with KICR Innovation Ltd, a joint venture between London based award-winning Food Innovation Solutions Ltd and MMR, a global Market Research agency and are already seeing results with a range of new products reaching shelves in 2021.

Our supply chains and operations are global and therefore we believe in collaboration with stakeholders to make lasting improvements on environmental and social issues.

We regularly engage with colleagues, suppliers, customers, neighbours, Non- Governmental Organisations, policymakers and many others to build relationships, learn from each other, expand our scope and aim for the greater good.

I have been with Princes Bradford for 6 years, starting back in 2016. I arrived in the UK from Pakistan on the 27th December 2015 and this was my first job in the UK. I started as an agency worker, operating on the D8 line but I’ve moved around to many different lines since then. After 11 months I had learned 4 lines from beginning to end so was thrilled and excited when I was offered a full-time role, working directly for Princes.

Princes is a great place to work because everyone works as one team, helping each other and being supportive.

Since starting as an operator I became a Team Leader in production and also did a spell as a stand- in Manufacturing Team Leader on several lines.

Around mid-2020 I saw an advert for engineering apprentices, and I went to speak with some colleagues about the opportunity, one of these was an engineer who I worked with for about 3 years. I am a professional mechanic by trade, so this opportunity felt like the right thing to do.

I am now in my second year, and I am enjoying the role and I feel like I am in the right department, I also enjoy the college side as I’m learning and understanding more things about engineering every day. I think this has been a wonderful move for me and my family. I’ve spent 6 years at the Princes factory in Bradford learning the machinery and the mechanics of how it all works, so I know I can make a positive contribution to the team.

We have continued to increase our engagement of direct feedback through worker voice initiatives with a total of 243 workers taking part over the past twelve months across suppliers in Thailand and Greece. THE TRANSITION TO A MORE CIRCULAR ECONOMY WHERE MATERIALS ARE INCREASINGLY REUSED AND REPURPOSED IS SOMETHING WE ARE COMMITTED TO PLAY A PART IN In our drinks and oils PET bottles we have been using recycled material for over 10 years and in 2019 reached 51% recycled content, whether for our brands or customer own brand. As more material becomes available and there is commercial acceptance from customers we will push this figure on further, while some of our brands - such as Jucee - are individually accelerating to using 100% recycled PET. We have eliminated most non recyclable plastics from our business and our focus is on finding a widely recyclable solution for the few remaining areas of our business , notably pouches, where the plastic is not currently recyclable.

We are preparing for legislative changes to packaging in the UK including the Plastics Tax, Deposit Return Schemes and Extended Producer Responsibility, all of which we are broadly supportive of as part of the journey to an increasingly circular economy.

ATLANTIC OCEAN BEST PRACTICE APPROACHES

Initially trading solely in canned fish including Lobster, few businesses have a heritage as rich as Princes in the procurement of seafood. Even though we don’t own any boats, our commitment to sourcing seafood sustainably is a key part of our corporate responsibility.

We source a range of fish species from around the world. Where possible, we aim to source from Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certified fisheries or those that are actively involved in Fishery Improvement Projects (FIPs) with the aim of achieving MSC certification.

Princes is a founder member of the SIOIT FIP (2017). We also source MSC certified skipjack tuna from the Echebastar and CFTO purse seine fisheries and Maldives pole & line fishery.

Princes is a founder member of the Senegal pole & line FIP. We also source from the Eastern Atlantic FIP and AGAC MSC assessment.

INDONESIA We source pole & line tuna from Indonesia’s AP2HI FIP. The Western Pacific part of this fishery gained MSC certification in 2021.

TUNA Our goal is to source all of our tuna from MSC certified fisheries or those in a FIP. In 2020, we achieved 97%. In the UK, all of our Princes brand tuna meets industry agreed Responsibly Sourced criteria.

SARDINES Our sardine supplier is a member of the Moroccan sardine FIP. They aim to enter into MSC assessment in 2021.

SALMON Princes sources MSC certified pink, red and keta salmon from the Alaskan fishery.

MACKEREL Princes sources mackerel from the Northeast Atlantic’s MINSA fishery. Princes is also a founder member of the North Atlantic Pelagic Advocacy Group (NAPA) which calls on coastal and fishing nations to improve the management of the fishery.

BEST PRACTICE APPROACHES Princes is one of the founding partners of the International Seafood Sustainability Foundation (ISSF), helping to advance global tuna sustainability through science-based practices, collaboration, and advocacy.

In the last year we have continued to make good progress, achieving an overall food waste reduction of 13% versus 2020, across our global operations during what was a challenging year.

We are partnering organisations such as WRAP and we’re proud to have supported them in their first UK Food Waste Action Week earlier in 2021, highlighting the role that preventing food waste plays in tackling climate change – another important element of our 2030GreenGoals sustainability programme, and vision to ‘Proudly help families to eat well without costing the Earth’.

FARESHARE We’ve been partnering with FareShare since 2013 and all food and drink that we produce at our UK sites that cannot be sold for whatever reason and is fit for human consumption is donated to them. The charity based, in the UK, is leading the way in tackling hunger and food waste.

In fact, 2020/2021 has been FareShare’s biggest year yet. They helped 10,542 charities and community groups and 1,108,064 people were provided food supplied by FareShare. The food they’ve redistributed contributed towards 131.9 million meals and saved the charity sector £18.5 million.

In 2021 we donated over 105k cases of food and drink, both branded and customer own brand products. We’ve also established a food bank partnership in Italy for excess stock at our PIA operation.

IN LINE WITH ITS 2030GREENGOALS INITIATIVE, AND COMMITMENT AS A MEMBER OF THE CHAMPIONS 12.3 COALITION, PRINCES IS WORKING TO ACCELERATE PROGRESS TOWARDS ACHIEVING SDG TARGET 12.3 BY 2030: BY 2030, HALVE PER CAPITA GLOBAL FOOD WASTE AT THE RETAIL AND CONSUMER LEVELS AND REDUCE FOOD LOSSES ALONG PRODUCTION AND SUPPLY CHAINS, INCLUDING POST-HARVEST LOSSES.

HEALTHY FOOD HEALTHY LIFE WE ARE SERIOUS ABOUT OUR RESPONSIBILITY IN PROVIDING THIS TO HELP FAMILIES EAT WELL AND AFFORDABLY. THE VAST MAJORITY OF THE FOOD AND DRINK WE PRODUCE CAN BE FOUND ON THE NHS EATWELL PLATE, CONTRIBUTING TO A BALANCED DIET. THE CORNERSTONES OF OUR BUSINESS SEAFOOD, PASTA, OILS, PULSES, FRUIT AND VEGETABLES – ALL PLAY A KEY ROLE IN ACHIEVING THIS BALANCE.

HFSS LEGISLATION We are supportive of UK legislation coming into force in 2022 that will see food and drink High in Fat, Salt and Sugar (HFSS) banned from advertising and promotional activity in media and stores. Very few of our product categories are in scope of the legislation and for those that are we have no products currently impacted.

While this is a positive position, we are not complacent and will continue to review all our recipes and seek to reformulate where we can, in particular towards FSA salt targets for 2024.

WE ARE COMMITTED TO PROVIDING NUTRITIOUS FOOD AND DRINK FOR THE MILLIONS OF FAMILIES THAT BUY OUR PRODUCTS EVERY DAY

DIET, HEALTH AND ECONOMICS In October 2021 a survey from the ongoing National Diet and Nutrition Survey (NDNS) was issued by Public Health England. While there was an in increase in cooking at home and reduction in takeaway food during lockdown, it is clear that the UK general diet for most nutrients and age groups remains concerning and this will only add further pressure to an already burdened NHS. The survey found that intakes of free sugars, total and saturated fat continue to exceed recommendations and intake of fruit and vegetables, fish and oily fish and fibre are below the recommended levels.

Mean consumption of fruit and vegetables was below the recommendation in all age or sex groups while consumption of total and oily fish was well below the recommendation in all age and sex groups.

These are key areas for us and we will review how we can better promote the nutritional benefits of our products.

More positively, the survey noted that average intake of salt was significantly lower in this study compared to previous assessments for women aged 19 to 64 and men aged 65 and over.

The ongoing downward trend in sugar sweetened drink consumption continues across most age groups and we remain committed to ensuring that no branded soft drink we make contains any added sugar.

Of particular concern was the data that shows that for all key nutrients, mean consumption was lower for households who reported to be managing less well financially, yet in these same households’ consumption of sugar sweetened beverages and processed meat was higher than average.

This further supports the aims of the Child Food Poverty Taskforce which has called for better education as well as financial support for less well-off families. Princes has publicly supported the Taskforce aims, but it is becoming increasingly clear we have a responsibility to move beyond our traditional role as a food manufacturer and engage further in food education and tackling food poverty.

Our growth has been driven by the continued success of our “For the love of Italian food” campaign, which has been showing the public how to effortlessly make great Italian food. NEW PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT 2021 has seen Napolina launch new NPD, with the development of Napolina Selezione Speciale, a premium tier range which heroes quality, and regional Italian ingredients. The aim of the range is to take consumers on a culinary adventure around Italy, showcasing the best regional ingredients. Tomatoes is the first range launched with three products including Crushed Tomatoes, Datterini Tomatoes and Cherry Tomatoes. This will be followed by a range of sauces, pasta and oils in the near future.

We’ve also launched a new product in pulses with Black and White Chickpeas, a unique sku in the market.

SUSTAINABILITY AND TRANSPARENCY As part of Napolina’s commitment to transparency and sustainability, we’ve moved our entire range of pasta into artisan inspired cardboard packaging. The pasta boxes are 100% recyclable and will eliminate up to 200 tonnes of plastic from the UK waste stream each year. In addition to this, our range of olive oils will soon be available in 100% recycled PET whilst remaining 100% recyclable. We are also undertaking market leading work on the transparency of our tomato supply chain, including launching on-pack QR codes telling the Napolina story of quality and sustainability.

U:ME Spice Shots will add to the U:ME Oils range in 2021

Trex remains an icon of British home baking.

Within Baking, Trex appeals to over 600k shoppers, who are buying more often and spending more within the category.

Since the launch of U:ME oils in April 2020, the brand has brought new, younger shoppers in to the category. To build on this, U:ME will expand its’ range to include U:ME Spice Shots.

Princes has a long history of transparency and responsible sourcing. At the end of 2020, our fish supply chain was made fully transparent by launching a digital platform checkjevis.nl. Thanks to innovative blockchain technology, consumers can see the journey the fish in their can has made. QR codes on the new packaging give consumers access to the story behind the products. The digital platform is designed so that consumers can map the environmental and social impact of products in a simple and transparent way, tracing all tuna products back to the boat that caught the fish. Other fish products (currently with the exception of salmon) can be traced the area it was caught.

The ‘Verruim Je Blik’ campaign started in 2019 and has been running ever since. The campaign is aimed at inspiring consumers to broaden their recipe horizons, using key influencers and brand ambassadors via online and social media. The so called ‘HERO Campaign’ ran during the summer, supported by instore marketing activities as well as a 20 second TV Commercial.

Alongside the HERO Campaign, Princes NL also ran a brand awareness social media campaign.

PARTNERSHIP WITH PLASTIC BANK ® In the run-up to World Oceans Day on the 8th of June 2021, Princes announced their support for Plastic Bank® in their mission to remove plastic from coastal areas and prevent ocean pollution, broadening our sustainability activities still further.

PlasticBank is building ethical recycling ecosystems in coastal communities in countries such as Haiti, Brazil, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Egypt stopping ocean plastic while improving lives in vulnerable coastal communities.

Local collectors exchange their plastic waste for cash, which help provide basic family necessities such as groceries, school tuition, and health insurance.

As a partner of Plastic Bank, Princes contributes to fighting both plastic pollution in the oceans and the high poverty rates in developing countries.

Consumers are being invited to contribute too, the partnership with Plastic Bank is supported by a big campaign including TV, POS, outdoor sites and retailer magazines.

By scanning a QR-code on the lid of the can, consumers are taken to the “Scan-den-Fisch” landing page, which then shows all relevant information, from the catching method to the ocean the tuna was caught in and, where it was canned. In fact, full transparency of the supply chain. Over the course of the year all of our products on shelf in Austria, will have a QR code.

To create awareness and support for this initiative, a PR campaign was initiated, targeting Austrian consumers with an interest in our brand, sustainability or tuna.

MEDIA SUPPORT: TV COMMERCIAL For Vier Diamanten the iconic fish made of cans commercial, ran continuously on Austrian TV, highly recognisable and delivering to the brands image. To further boost the broadness of our tuna offering, the TVC was accompanied by a new tag-on, inviting the viewer to dive into the variety of products that Vier Diamanten has to offer and at the same time put the new Tuna in Olive Oil with Chili variant in the spotlight.

An important aspect of rejuvenating the brand and its target audience is to build our social media reach and increase brand presence in these channels. This was aimed at connecting with young adults, interested in food and a healthy lifestyle and curious to try new things.

PRODUCT NEWS At the end of 2020 and toward the start of 2021 we introduced our added-value Vier Diamanten Olive Oil + Chili. This new product variety spices up the shelves of many Austrian retailers and the tuna steak combines very well with the fine taste of olive oil and chili peppers. A very easy meal component to add an extra punch to your dishes.

Catering for the needs of consumers, the range of tower packs has been extended to tuna in Olive Oil. Making a total of four brand choices for real tuna lovers, who can’t get enough of our products.

Launched in 2010, the Wielkopolski brand has become one of the most well-known brands in Poland’s edible oils category, improving its market share and brand awareness year on year. This progress is driven by the quality of the product, which offers consumers quality cooking oil that they trust to bring out the best in their dishes.

2021 has seen us refresh our brand. By simplifying the logo, our research has shown that we are appealing to a wider audience and making the SKUs more visible on shelf.

Every year Wielkopolski run a national lottery.

This is extremely popular and raises our sales as well as building brand awareness.

Changing the attitudes of our shoppers is one of the main goals for our brand. In 2018, we were the first brand in Poland with 51% recycled plastic content.

In 2021, we’ve upgraded our portfolio by creating a 2 litres bottle made from in 100% recycled packaging.

We have also improved the health benefits and prevenance credentials. All of our oils now have the benefit of vitamins E & K, they are made in Poland and our bottles have improved their rPET content from 51% to now 100%.

This year’s lottery started in October 2021 and runs to January 2022.

Every day three people will win 100 PLN and every month, one person will win a year’s salary* of 33,600PLN. This 3-month long event is supported by a comprehensive advertising campaign including social media, TV, Radio, PR and digital/ video.
