THE PRINCES WAY: A Guide To Our Colleague Recognition Scheme

FOREWORD

First launched back in 2019, our Group colleague recognition scheme ‘Pride in Princes’ has attracted hundreds of nominations and with 227 individual winners and 140 team wins, we have been able to celebrate the efforts of 1,007 colleagues to date.

Always designed to be a scheme driven by our colleagues, I have the privilege of working with our panel of volunteer colleagues every 12 weeks to read through each and every nomination that we receive. The stories we read are really insightful and give us a window into the life of colleagues from across the business.

There is a real simplicity to Pride in Princes and it’s a scheme with very few rules. As a Princes colleague, if you want to call out the efforts of your fellow colleagues, then you can.

So you might be wondering why we now need a guide. And the answer is because Pride in Princes is getting a bit of a face lift!

All that is great and easy about the scheme will stay as it is – what changes are the Values that we ask you to highlight in your nominations.

Our new Values define what good looks like, or the ‘Princes Way’, and I can’t think of a better way to help them come to life across the business than by asking you to shout out when you see (or feel) your colleagues living them.

To help lift the Values off the page, we have created a simple set of behavioural frameworks that describe the positive behaviours associated with each Value.

I really look forward to hearing from you and having the opportunity to keep saying ‘thank you’ in recognition of everyone’s great work.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF PRIDE IN PRINCES?

In a nutshell, it’s all about creating #timetoshine and we want to make sure that when colleagues go the extra mile and really bring our values to life, we all have an opportunity to recognise that.

It follows that if our Values define what good looks like at Princes, by describing how each of us behaves and how we should expect our colleagues to behave towards us, then we should recognise and celebrate real-life examples of our Values in action.

As a Group-wide Recognition Scheme, Pride in Princes helps us to:

• Connect everyone with a common sense of belonging

• Develop a culture of praise and recognition

• Inspire future performance and reinforce ‘what good looks like’

• Encourage cross-functional working and collaboration

• Provide a consistent yet flexible recognition offer as part of our Colleague Value Proposition

• Publicly celebrate individuals and teams that embody our Values

Pride in Princes does not replace any locally run recognition schemes. Indeed, we actively encourage those site leadership teams to nominate individuals or teams that have been identified through their own local recognition processes. If someone’s efforts feel worthy of a Pride in Princes, then the panel want to hear about it.

WHAT IS THE CRITERIA FOR A PRIDE IN PRINCES AWARD?

Being shortlisted or winning a Pride in Princes Award is recognition of significant commitment or exceptional performance in relation to our Values – it is a refection of how an individual colleague or team have approached the task at hand, not what that task was.

And that is an important point. There is no hierarchy to our new Values. Each one is equally important and there are of course interconnections between each of the Values.

Similarly, the Behavioural Frameworks that support our Values are universal. There are three frameworks that colleagues can refer to and they simply set out the expected attitudes and behaviours of our senior leaders, people managers and individual colleagues.

Not role specific, the positive behaviours highlighted in the frameworks are included as examples – it’s not an exhaustive list, and you should feel free to share Pride in Princes nominations with us that highlight your own examples of how another colleague has brought a particular Value to life for you.

PROUDLY PRINCES

We want to get up every morning feeling proud to go to work knowing it makes a difference and contributes towards our wider purpose. We are proud of the quality we deliver and we put time into celebrating when we get it right.

STRONGER TOGETHER

Winning feels better when we do it together. That means welcoming people from different backgrounds and with different viewpoints, embracing healthy challenge and conflict, staying connected and breaking down silos to support each other to do our best. Not only among ourselves, but with our stakeholders and partners as well.

The Values are shown opposite with their short descriptions and, taken from the Behavioural Frameworks, you will see examples of what good might look like at the end of this booklet.

There really is no right or wrong answer. Ultimately the criteria for a Pride in Princes nomination is yours to decide – if you want to call out a colleague (or team of colleagues) who in your opinion have gone the extra mile and demonstrated the ‘Princes Way’, then the panel will be delighted to hear from you.

TRUSTED & EMPOWERED

It all starts with trust. Trusted by our managers and leaders. Trusted by our customers and consumers, and not to forget, by the wider community. We are trusted to always do the right thing and we are empowered to do it.

BRAVELY EXPLORING

For over a century we have adapted and evolved as a business. Now more than ever, we are committed to exploring better and innovative ways to meet the needs of those we work with. And we don’t stop there, we prioritise ourselves, seeking ways to grow and develop. Change is necessary and we embrace it.

CUSTOMER OBSESSED

Delighting the customer inspires us; whether its our partners or consumers or our own internal customers and colleagues. We are obsessed with delivering a great service; keeping customers at the heart of every decision and action, building great partnerships based on genuine care, understanding their needs and working tirelessly to deliver the quality they deserve.

WHO ARE THE PRIDE IN PRINCES AWARDS OPEN TO?

Everyone! Pride in Princes is completely inclusive; permanent, fixed term graded or ungraded colleagues in all roles and in all locations can get involved. There is no length of service criteria or any restrictions on who or how often you nominate.

The panel consider each and every nomination submitted every quarter, and gift a Pride in Princes Award to the stand out individual colleagues or teams. There is no restriction in terms of people or teams being nominated more than once, regardless of whether they have previously won an award.

Designed to celebrate the best of Princes, the panel is not able to consider nominations for non-Princes colleagues, including self-employed contractors.

LET’S TALK VALUES:

WHAT IS THE NOMINATION PROCESS?

We have not made any changes to the nomination process.

There are two quick and simple ways to share your good news stories:

1. Through the Pride in Princes App; or

2. By completing a paper nomination form

Easily accessible via the Princes Portal homepage, the Pride in Princes App features as a main tile – by clicking on the tile, you will be taken straight through to the digital nomination form.

HOW ARE THE WINNERS CHOSEN?

By unanimous decision –and often lengthy debate!

As a scheme, Pride in Princes is always open and nominations are considered every quarter by a panel of colleague volunteers chaired by Joe Dent, Chief People Officer.

Every year, the nomination windows are:

Q1: 1st April – 30th June

Q2: 1st July – 30th September

Q3: 1st October – 31st December

Q4: 1st January – 31st March

The panel only consider the nominations received during any given quarter. Just like there is no restriction on how many times a colleague can be nominated or indeed win an award, the panel only judge a nomination against the strength of nominations received in that quarter.

By talking about winners, there is an implication that there are losers – and this is absolutely not the case.

WHAT DO THE WINNERS OF A PRIDE IN PRINCES AWARD RECEIVE?

Hopefully our winners receive the fuss they deserve from their people manager and teams. We also enjoy sharing our winners’ stories with a spotlight in our ‘Meet The Winners’ magazine.

LET’S DIG INTO THE DETAIL: Please share with us a summary of what your colleague(s) has done to prompt this nomination –it really helps the panel rank your nomination if you include specific examples and an insight into:

7. What did they do?

9. What difference did their attitude or actions make?

8. What barriers did they overcome?

10. Why did this have such a big impact on you and how you felt? THAT IS IT

THANK YOU! Please hand your completed form back to your local HR Team and they will ensure it’s included in the next nominations review.

#Timetoshine

Alternatively, your local HR team will have paper copies of the nomination form for you to complete and they can then arrange for your nomination to be uploaded.

For anyone to be nominated for a Pride in Princes award it is a real accolade in itself. It means that you have so impressed someone that they have taken the time to write and submit a nomination form. Recognising everybody who has brought our Values to life is a key driver of Pride in Princes – and it’s why every nominated colleague receives a personal note of thanks from the Board.

And of course, with every Pride in Princes award comes a Pride in Princes payment – a token of thanks that hopefully puts a smile on our winners faces.

As an individual winner, a colleague will receive £200 (or local currency equivalent) and each recipient of a team award will receive £50 (or local currency equivalent).

The award payment are processed via payroll and will be made as soon as possible following the announcement of our winners (but within the usual processing windows). For complete transparency, please note that awards are subject to tax.

To help the panel review the nomination by categories, please tick the Value that you believe your chosen nominee(s) has brought to life: Proudly Princes Trusted and Empowered Bravely Exploring Customer Obsessed Stronger Together Remember there is no hierarchy to our Values and each one is equally important.
