IS ANYONE FED UP with the heat?

At the risk of sounding un-Australian, I can’t stand temperatures over 30.

You can only hit up the beach so many times before you end up like a piece of dried seaweed.

I’ve even seen a TikTok trend out there encouraging beach goers to ‘get a good tan’ by not using sunscreen – uhhhh no thanks.

As far as I’m concerned, temperatures over 30 were invented to keep people inside with a cold one to boost Test TV ratings.

When it comes to tradies, hotter days mean working in sometimes sweltering heats (unless it’s simply too hot to work).

I’ve seen tonnes of sites in outer suburbia where whole hectares are being turned into insane compounds with five bedrooms, a tennis court, a turning circle, sheds for the boats, and granny flats for when the kids drop out of uni.

For these jobs, having a digger or two on site is common. But again, what about the heat?

In this edition of The Tradie, we highlight the

work Caterpillar does when it comes to adding A/C cabs to their smaller range of excavators. In days gone by, tradies driving diggers on a hot day might pinch the esky and dip their feet in the ice to stay cool. Not anymore.

It’s been a mixed bag of a summer in Australia, but when it’s been hot, it’s been hot

If you’re stuck inside with the A/C – or just sick of 2025 already – give this a read and see and soak up some of the cool things we’ve got going on.

Toby takes HiLux for a spin

HOW SUPPED UP is your HiLux?

We bet it’s not quite as loaded as this bad boy, which is fair enough because most Aussie ute drivers aren’t treking through arid deserts for days on end (although there are a few).

This HiLux Overdrive T1+ is being driven by seasoned Aussie Dakar vet Toby Price and British rider Sam Sunderland.

They swapped the motorbike for the ute for 2025’s rally.

“It’s a massive change,” Toby told Redbull.

“Here at Overdrive, it’s a huge operation with more vehicles and more people than I’m used to.

“Remembering everybody’s name on the team has been one of the toughest things so far. These guys have been coming to the Dakar Rally for many years, the car has

around it!

been thoroughly tested and everything behind the scenes is solid.

“Now it’s up to Sam and me to do the job properly and prove ourselves on four wheels. We both want to be doing this for a long time to come.”

The Saudi rally ran throughout early-mid January, and saw drivers cover about 5,000kms of land.

“I’ve won races in a Trophy Truck, but now I’m at the Dakar behind the wheel of a T1+ car,” Toby added.

“We’re bringing 350 horsepower compared to a 1,000 horsepower Trophy Truck, but if you brought a Trophy Truck here you’d only last about 30km because the car is so heavy. “Our HiLux is purposely built for the desert and other rally-raids in the middle of nowhere on tough terrain.”

Having A/C on a sub-2-tonne excavator used to be but a dream for tradies, not anymore!

Tradies wanting to keep cool in this hot weather will love the range of mini excavators from Caterpillar, which has set the standard when it comes to ‘chilling out’ on the job

Cat® dealers have actively showcased their Next Gen Mini Excavators to a diverse range of Australian contractors. These mini excavators have been shown as reliable, efficient, and economical solutions for digging needs.

Caterpillar Next Generation Mini Excavators are a versatile suite of machines that provide great choices to meet the various demands of tradies.

The lineup includes several models, each catering to different preferences and project specifications.

For instance, there is the 301.5 with an open canopy, weighing in at 1.7 tonnes, suitable for standard tailswing applications. Then there’s the 301.6 , equipped with an air-conditioned cab, also at 1.7 tonnes, ensuring a comfortable working environment. Other models include the popular 301.7 CR , a compact tailswing machine at 1.75 tonnes, the 301.8 with options for either a canopy or A/C cab at 1.8 tonnes,

and finally, the 302 CR , which follows suit with canopy or A/C cab configurations at two tonnes.

The A/C Cab configuration is a major drawcard for tradies trying to stay chill on-site.

COOL AND CALM

The air-conditioned cab represents a commitment by Cat to provide a superior working environment for operators, including tradies. By insulating workers from the harsh Aussie heat, it enables them to maintain their focus and avoid getting worn out.

Together with the mini excavators’ advanced design and engineering, operators can enjoy the dual benefits of comfort and enhanced productivity, making these machines an invaluable asset on any job site.

When summer rolls around, many workers on-site face the challenge of maintaining comfort during long hours of operation.

The importance of a well-designed cab cannot be understated, especially when it comes to preventing operator fatigue and getting the job done. The automotive-inspired sealed and pressurised design

range – including the 302.7 is built to tackle a variety of demanding jobs in a variety of environments

ensures that cooling is maintained even in the hottest weather conditions, allowing the operator to focus more on the task at hand rather than battling the heat.

This becomes especially critical in environments where temperature and humidity levels can soar.

The air-conditioned cab is more than just a luxury; it contributes to the overall efficiency and safety of operations. With temperatures rising, keeping cool is essential for maintaining high levels of concentration and performance.

The advanced climate control systems incorporated into the control monitor in the cab allows the operator to set their desired temperature, which helps reduce the risk of heat exhaustion and dehydration during summer months.

This is vital not just for comfort but also helpful for safety, as it keeps

the operator sharp and aware, ultimately improving the quality of work performed. In addition to the premium comfort offered by the A/C cab, the Next Gen Mini Excavators are equipped with a host of technologically advanced features that further enhance their performance.

LOCKED AND LOADED

A prime example is the load-sensing hydraulic system, which enables powerful lifting and digging capabilities.

This system ensures that the machines perform optimally by adjusting the hydraulic flow based on the actual load, delivering both efficiency and fuel economy.

Operators can enjoy the powerful response of the machinery without sacrificing stability, allowing them to tackle even the most

challenging tasks with confidence.

Another important element of the Next Gen range is the innovative Cat Joystick Travel mode.

This feature revolutionises the control interface by replacing traditional lever and foot-pedal steering with an intuitive skid-steer style joytsick control.

This improvement results in greater control, especially for tasks such as backfilling and leveling, which can often be tricky with conventional travel-pedal controls.

Operators can easily switch between different steering methods at the press of a button, depending on the requirements of the job.

This cutting-edge capability is made possible by the advanced electro-hydraulic (EH) control system, which replaces traditional pilothydraulic controls.

Feedback from operators has highlighted several standout features that enhance the user experience.

The introduction of an optional keyless start system in Cat 1-2 tonne excavators signifies a first in the industry, improving security and convenience. Additionally, innovations like blade float, auto idle, and joystick thumb controls have been well received, making daily operations simpler and more efficient.

Tradies need to keep cool in sub-2-tonne excavators just as much as bigger diggers - and Cat Mini Excavators in this class deliver.

As the demand for innovative solutions continues to grow, it is clear that Caterpillar is prepared to lead the charge with its exceptional mini excavator lineup.

Side quests

Nothing like a bit of friendly competition

Fourth-year shopfitting apprentice Luca Mascaro has excelled not only on the worksite, but its his work in the classroom that has him turning heads

LUCA’S JOURNEY

to studying Cert III in Shopfitting at Melbourne Polytechnic was fairly straightforward.

“In year 12 I was initially planning on doing engineering for uni,” he said.

“But during lockdowns, I said ‘y’know what? Stuff this – I don’t want the pressure’.

“And I realised if I was going into engineering I’d most likely end up doing more computer work which isn’t what I wanted to do.”

Luca’s “old man” was a project manager at Southern Cross Commercial Projects, and helped him secure an apprenticeship with the company.

JOINING UP

Of course, Luca’s time onsite learning shopfitting has really come in handy when it comes to his studies.

“To be honest, everything we do on-site is what we

do in the course,” he said.

“That’s carried through right until now – I guess with TAFE there’s been a focus on the step-by-step processes.

“Whereas on-site, there’s just a pure focus on installs or de-fits.”

Luca’s talents earned him a spot on the Victorian WorldSkills team last year, however not for shopfitting.

“I did it for joinery which isn’t what I do for work,” he said.

“It was a bit left of field for sure. The kind of joinery I do is a bit more artisanal or complex compared to everyday joinery.”

Competing in WorldSkills can vary from skill to skill, but naturally joiners were tasked with building something that involved, well … joinery.

“They’d make you build staircases or small tables in previous years,” Luca explained.

“But last year, they had us make a window frame with complex joinery.

Luca’s skill on-site has held him in good stead across his studies

shopfitter – who doesn’t really do much joinery – to manage to win against seven other joiners,” he joked.

“They had an Olympicsstyle closing ceremony, it was pretty good having my name called for first place.”

Unfortunately, joinery wasn’t included in WorldSkills Australia’s national team bound for Lyon, France last year for the international competition.

But Luca took it like a champ, not knowing another international trip was on the horizon.

“It was pretty much a window frame with mitred half laps, bridal joints that had curves and arches in them, and they were interlinked unto themselves with no screws or anything.

“In order to get full marks you had to have no gaps at all.”

Despite entering a competition surrounded by some of the nation’s most talented joiners, Luca took first place.

“It’s going to sound a bit silly, but I thought it was a bit funny that as a

“It was a bit of a gut punch, but at the same time I guess I’m the undefeated champion,” he said.

HELLO TOKYO

Luca will head to Japan early this year to showcase his skill at World Wood Day (yes, it’s a real day).

The rigorous application process saw Luca submit some of his best work to a panel, as well as a proposed blueprint for what he’d create in Japan if given the opportunity.

Despite accidentally submitting his final

drawings a week late, he was invited to hop over the pond and show Japan what he’s got.

“I’ve sent off a materials cutting list of what I’ll need to complete my proposed project,” he said.

Late last year Luca also received the prestigious David Provan & Sons Annual Award for Carpentry, Joinery and Cabinet Making.

“I had a day off work and one of the admin people at Melb Poly called me to say I had won the award,” Luca said.

“I answered ‘I’ve won what?!’ It caught me off guard, but it was great to receive that award.”

Luca was nominated by Melbourne Polytechnic teachers for the award, which is the cherry on top of what’s been an unexpectedly exciting time at TAFE.

“When I first got into the gig, I thought I’d do my apprenticeship – become qualified – and that’d be it,” he said.

“I didn’t think there’d be all these side quests, but I’m always willing to give them a crack and see what happens.”

To say Luca was pumped to win gold at WorldSkills nationals last year would be an understatement

Sparked up

Live wires at VDA Electrical loving Trafic

RUNNING AN efficient team of hardcore sparkies across the greater Melbourne area can be a tall order.

Thankfully, it’s one VDA Electrical founder and Managing Director Peter Van Den Akker has relished since starting his business 10 years ago.

His journey from the start has been massively aided by his choice in van –Renault’s Trafic.

PLUGGED IN

Like any good tradie, Peter won’t say no to any job. He and his team of electricians at VDA travel across the greater Melbourne area, doing all manner of jobs.

“I’m a yes man, but VDA mainly works on construction sites, new and commercial buildings or apartment complexes, office fit-outs and those kinds of things,” he said.

One thing Peter’s maintained throughout his career as an electrician is an emphasis on the team. At 30-strong, his crew at

VDA is as locked in as they come.

“A lot of people say they’re in the industry for the money or something – I’m in it because I’ve always wanted a team around me,” he said.

“We’ve got apprentices, A-grades, project managers, estimators and Jaimee in the office who’s our heart.”

MAKES THE DREAM WORK

Given how highly Peter values teamwork, it was only natural he has Trafic as his go-to for transport.

“I’ve been driving Renault since day-dot,” he said.

“We’re always buying the new ones and handing them down. At the moment, we have about seven Renault vans on deck, many of which are Trafics.”

That included the latest iteration of the van, which held plenty of seating for Peter and his team to get themselves and their

equipment around town.

This includes modular seating upfront, which can be configured to a mobile office setup.

But also in its payload capacity, where Trafic sports a best-in-class load length of 4.15m.

Wires, ladders, conduits and a tonne of power and hand tools to boot – Peter and his team need plenty of space which Trafic has in spades. If one of Peter’s sparkies needs to charge a tool, Trafic also has them set with a 12v power socket.

ROAD LEGEND

Under the hood, Trafic has an engine that’s a tradie’s dream. The 2.0L turbocharged engine delivers 125kW of power and 380Nm of torque.

What’s really impressed Peter across his time with Trafic vans is their constant focus on fuel economy.

The latest version is no different, with an 80L fuel tank that gives Peter’s sparkies plenty of time out and about before they need to hit up a bowser.

“From my point of view, you want a work van that causes you no grief,” he explained.

“Running cost and efficiency is a big thing and if Renault stays on top of that … that’s gotta be the main thing for tradespeople when it comes to choosing vans.”

Not only does Trafic avoid petrol stations as much as possible, it also has a best-in-class service interval of oneyear/30,000km meaning tradies are spending even less time running chores and more time getting the job done.

Peter wasn’t shy about how much he valued having Trafics on his team at VDA.

Between the performance capacity

matter the

delivered on the inside – and the on-road performance – Peter said he doesn’t plan on using any other van while at VDA.

“We love them,” Peter added.

“They’re built for our workload, and they don’t miss a beat.”

The latest Trafic comes with 10 of the latest safety features including cruise control, lane departure warning, active emergency braking, traffic sign recognition, and blind spot warning

Assisting tradies

First-time truck buyer? Here’s how Truck Assist can help

TRADIES KNOW

the drill when it comes to doing things the proper way. They know the tools they’ll need, the team they’ll need, and the materials needed to get the job done. When it comes to bringing a truck(s) into the business, the last thing a tradie wants to do is dive in unprepared.

For times like this, it pays to have the experts like Truck Assist in a tradie’s corner.

ROLLING COVERAGE

Truck Assist – and parent company NTI – has been helping Aussies with their trucking insurance needs for about 50 years.

In all those years, the business has prided itself on having the know-how and connections to help set would-be truck owners on the right road.

This includes a lot of tradies, which NTI National

Development Manager Craig Carmody said was becoming increasingly common.

“A lot of tradies don’t consider themselves truck drivers, and therefore may not have relationships with those truck dealers and the network that supports them,” he said.

“However, it’s interesting that most truck manufacturers acknowledge that tradies are certainly a target market and therefore offer solutions like “Ready to work” and “Built to Go” within their range of vehicles.”

NEW WHEELS

Tradies might know the ins and outs of residential build, but Craig said there’s plenty of important factors they may not consider when it comes to picking a truck to support their business.

“Firstly, its important to consider the size of the truck – will it be big or small, rigid or articulated?,” Craig said.

“Does it need to be a Pantech or a tray, does it need a tailgate lifter or crane?”

“Then there’s payload If you’re a bricky, do you need to put a palette of bricks in the back?

“Another consideration is your licensing requirements – and considering what licences your team has. Can you drive the truck you want with a car license?

Craig added the fuel type was another major consideration, with many businesses now eager to make the most from sustainability incentives through hybrid and electric fuel systems.

TRICKS OF THE TRADE

Those few considerations

are just the tip of the iceberg, however.

That’s why tradies can trust Truck Assist to help with some of the more complex conundrums they may encounter when bringing trucks into their business.

A tradie’s vehicle is like their power tools –absolutely vital for getting the job done, keeping the dollars rolling in and providing great customer service.

“Tools are the lifeblood for tradies, and trucks are a tool as well,” Craig said.

“It’s the same philosophy – you’ve got to protect your tools to protect your income, and your truck is an important asset in your tool kit.”

With this in mind, Craig said it was crucial tradies chooses a policy that gives them peace of mind, ensuring their truck is

properly covered.

Truck Assist offers a bunch of different packages catered to various needs for Australian truck owners.

This includes the Drive Pack Plus, which is especially tailored to SMEs. It can include extras including Work Tools Cover as well, making it ideal for tradies to protect their tools while they’re on the road*.

SIMPLE SUPPORT

No matter what insurance policy or roadside option you choose, Truck Assist’s dedicated team is on-hand 24/7 to provide assistance no matter where you are in Australia.

“We have a simple process and national network to ensure you have support when you need it most,” Craig said.

Truck Assist’s fair dinkum approach means getting a package that suits a tradie’s specific needs is a piece of cake.

“We try to get rid of the jargon, we keep it simple with customers,” Craig added.

“We try and make it really easy to access the network that has been established.

“We’ve supported over 300,000 trucks since Truck Assist was established.”

Tradies, let the experts at Truck Assist provide support when you need it most. The best part is, you can do it all online. Check out their plans and packages to suit your gear and your business online at truckassist.com.au

Built for the bush

Yamaha’s WR250F was developed by Aussies for Aussies

WHEN YAMAHA released the first WR250F back in 2001 it changed the bush riding game. Here was a giant-killing quarter-litre four stroke that could take on bikes twice its size. For added local cred, the WRF range was developed specifically for Australia with assistance from Australians – something rare in the global motorcycle market. To ensure the machine

was set up to suit our unique conditions, the WR250F was developed with the input of legendary Aussie riders such as Geoff Ballard, Stefan Merriman, Ben Grabham, Glenn Kearney and Stuart Morgan – all of whom worked in conjunction with Yamaha in Japan and with Yamaha Motor Australia top brass such as Peter Payne – who continues to be involved in model

development two decades later.

A STROKE ABOVE

Based on the YZ250F motocross platform, the WR250F soon proved to be the fastest way through tight scrub. In the right hands, a well-ridden WR250F could arrive back at the campsite quicker than much larger capacity bikes, which led to many Aussie riders downsizing

from 450s to the more manageable and riderfriendly 250.

The 250cc capacity has long been considered the Goldilocks engine size – ever since Yamaha dropped the first true dual-purpose dirt/street motorcycle – the now legendary 1968 DT1. The DTs were followed by the IT series introduced in the 1970s and then the four-stroke TT trail bike range. Two-strokes were still the racer’s choice until Yamaha shocked everyone by releasing the YZ400F in 1998 - the father of the modern high revving, high

performance four-stroke. Here was an engine that could spin up like a twostroke yet deliver heaps of linear, controllable power. While the two-strokes offered an adrenalin-filled ride, they demanded top skill to pilot fast for a full 20 minutes plus. The key to the 400F’s success was that it was easier to hang on to and even club riders could last a whole moto. That easy-to-ride nature became even more important when transferred to a bush setting with long days in the saddle battling tough trails.

The WR250F was developed by a number of Aussie enduro legends

(EN)DURABLE DESIGN

Taking an MX bike and turning it into an enduro machine sounds simple, but the changes are subtle and require a lot of input. The WR250F uses a model-specific ECU, is

equipped with a wideratio six-speed gearbox and the aluminium frame is specifically tuned for enduro riding. There are specialised settings for the front and rear suspension and the WRF runs an

18-inch wheel and tyre combination designed for enduro.

The WRF ECU emphasises the mid and low-speed range. A programming specialist in charge of tuning the

model’s fuel injection creates a 3D map for the system’s settings and loads it into the ECU. Then, the ECU is mounted on a test machine for off-road evaluations based on test rider perceptions

Small and speedy - the WR250F has come to be a favourite for enduro riders across the globe

and input. The results of these tests are analysed and returned to the fuel injection specialist for setting adjustments.

The revised map is then loaded into the ECU for further off-road tests. This process is repeated until the ideal settings are found.

As Japanese test rider and enduro legend Kenji Suzuki explains: “When it comes to re-programming the ECU, the demands are far more severe than with the YZ250F. In motocross, you typically keep engine revs above

Enduro riders need a bike that’s ready to tackle a wide range of turns and terrain

IN FOCUS: ROAD WARRIORS

3000 while riding. But for enduro riding, you have to be incredibly specific with the characteristics, going all the way to fine-tuning the bike’s ‘never-give-up’ feeling, like seeking the lowest point that engine braking will cause the engine to stop. In that range, you’re in a realm where the data doesn’t even show up as verifiable on the computer.”

The end result of the tuning process gives the WR250F the ability to creep along with practically zero throttle as well as delivering a fat mid-range and highspeed punch.

“Riding this machine in a motocross race with its standard settings will show its competitive potential. While this obviously depends also on the rider’s skills, I would say that it’s certainly capable of qualifying for International A-Class motocross competition,” adds Suzuki - a common surname in Japan.

GAME OF INCHES/MM

Looking at the some of the smallest parts of

the machine reveals the unrelenting attention to detail. For example, the shapes of the engine mounting brackets are adjusted by shaving away portions of them in millimetre increments, and various attachment methods are tried and tested – as many as 10 different mounting methods for the engine alone.

The diameter of the rear axle on the YZ250F is 25mm, but on the WR250F, it is 22mm. The diameters of the wheel spokes are also adjusted in millimetre increments, making them smaller than those on the YZ250F. Both these changes give the bike a more compliant feel that better suits enduro riding. This information is fed back to the factory engineers by riders rather than computers.

The WR250F has undergone many changes since 2001, with a flextuned aluminium frame replacing the original steel chassis and a reverse fed four-valve engine replacing the original forward facing five-valve

motor. This design allows a fresh shot of fuel-air mix to enter via the easily accessed top mount air filter. The layout also helps centralise engine mass for superb handling.

AROUND THE BEND

Now the latest model 2025 WR250F has received some of the biggest tweaks ever. Changes that make the bike rail corners even easier than before. This is due to a new chassis that gives the bike a lower centre of gravity, making direction changes a breeze. Grip at both front and rear is improved while the 250F’s trademark linear power is both longer and stronger throughout the range thanks to new intake and ECU settings. The bike is now slimmer through the shrouds and feels more nimble with industry-leading KYB suspension. The bar-mounted engine map switch allows you to choose two power maps on the fly. Both maps can be fine-tuned with your smartphone, with traction control now joining the fuel and ignition settings

as adjustable parameters.

The WR250F retains the ability to attract riders of larger capacity machines eager to test the notion that if a bike is easy to ride, it’s easy to ride fast.

The WR250F continues to be developed for Australia with input from the current ShopYamaha enduro race team including team manager AJ Roberts as well as Kiwi MX race legend Josh Coppins. Despite our small population, Australia is

the biggest single global market for WRF models –due to a combination of the unique conditions we ride, the input from local race teams, riders and YMA staff and the ability to road register units locally. Yamaha’s WRF is one of the few – maybe the only – model range that is truly conceived for and ridden in the Aussie bush.

Supporting women in trades: From the ground up

BLUNDSTONE

AUSTRALIA is proud to support and advocate for women in trades with the best footwear options, designed and made specifically for women. Women are vital to addressing critical trade shortages, adding diverse skills to the workforce and bringing productivity, innovation and fresh perspectives to trade environments.

Trade careers can also positively impact women’s economic security and job satisfaction, however, there is still work to be done to ensure women are supported throughout all levels of trades, from apprenticeships to management and beyond.

Flexible study and apprenticeship options, more accommodating and supportive workplaces, and safety equipment that doesn’t unfairly disadvantage women are just some of the issues currently being addressed by forward-thinking organisations in both the public and private sectors.

Eliminating these barriers to entry is a fundamental first step in tackling critical issues such as the national skills shortage.

TRADE PARTICIPATION IS VITAL TO ADDRESSING NATIONAL SKILLS SHORTAGES

A 2024 statement from The Hon Andrew Giles MP, Minister for Skills and Training, shows that almost 80 per cent more women are training as apprentices in maledominated trades like construction, clean energy and advanced manufacturing.

Although these figures are promising thanks to government initiatives like the Women in Trades Strategy and investment in apprenticeship support services, the bigger picture shows that women are still largely under-represented in traditionally maledominated industries.

In Australian industries with major skills shortages, such as construction,

electrotechnology and automotive, women make up only two per cent of qualified trade workers.

ACCESS TO APPROPRIATE PPE

Of course, for women to succeed in trade roles they need to be fully supported with appropriate equipment – including well-fitting, purposedesigned safety footwear. At Blundstone, ensuring that women have access to a range of suitable safety footwear choices is something we take seriously. A typical woman’s foot is both shorter and narrower than a typical man’s foot, so a small men’s boot may be the right length but not the right width. And, having to wear the wrong safety boots due to a lack of choice can increase the chances of tripping and cause discomfort if not designed specifically for womens’ needs. As a result, Blundstone has developed several women’s specific safety boots that are carefully

designed to suit the different structural needs, widths, sizes and arch shapes of women’s feet.

BLUNDSTONE WOMEN’S SPECIFIC SAFETY FOOTWEAR

Blundstone’s RotoFlex® series is a world-leading biomechanical range for the modern worker. With a range of women’s specific styles, these safety boots ensure that women working in the most challenging environmental conditions can remain safe and protected from injury.

#9960 WOMEN’S ROTOFLEX

Also designed and made for women are the RotoFlex #9960 safety boots in Wheat. Seamlessly integrating style and function, Blundstone’s unique zoned airflow footbed keeps feet well-ventilated while the GripTek®XHD Sole offers

Blundstone boots – such as the #9960s – are keenly designed with the female tradie in mind

optimum grip and stability, as well as fuel oil, cut, slip and heat resistance to 300°C.

This safety boot offers optimum fit, support and comfort for women in many industrial trades.

#9961 WOMEN’S ROTOFLEX

Built for hard work, the RotoFlex #9961 black safety boots are designed to keep female tradies safe and comfortable on the job. A durable GripTek® XHD Nitrile rubber outsole provides dependable performance and protection on any terrain. Like the styles mentioned above, the #9961 also incorporates a SOFTCELL® overarching comfort system – a unique biomechanical footcradling design to increase stability, balance, comfort and manoeuvrability and reduce the risk of trips, slips and falls.

Championing Women in Trades for Decades. Blundstone has been designing and manufacturing awardwinning safety footwear for over 150 years and we continue to adapt and innovate to suit the needs of tomorrow’s diverse workforce.

How Anthem equips healthy tradies

Tradies love keeping fit on and off the tools, good thing there’s a company dedicated to equipping them

DUNCAN ST BAKER has spent his career understanding what tradies do and don’t like when it comes to workwear.

He’s worked for WorkWear Group (KingGee and Hard Yakka) as well as helped get a foothold Down Under for Caterpillar Workwear.

“I’ve been in the game for a long time, and I got to the point where I had a big enough of an idea where I could quit my job and have,” he said.

“I’ve always had a passion to start my own brand.”

It was at this point three years ago that Anthem Workwear was born.

RUNNING WITH IT In the modern era of tradie lifestyle, one thing

is abundantly clear – they love a good gym sesh.

“I’ve seen this change in behaviour of tradespeople in the last decade where they’re very tuned into physical and mental health,” Duncan said.

“Fashion’s found itself creeping into workwear, and I saw an opportunity. A lot of the other workwear brands were focussing on products a tradie could wear on the worksite then wear on the weekend or to the pub etc.

“But there’s a massive explosion in athleisure as well … I saw a gap in the market that delivers to that market – a tradie – that they could wear during training right through to the worksite.

“They’re up early and rocking up to work by about 6-7am and hitting

the gym beforehand.”

With his sell locked and loaded, Duncan was ready to take on the world.

There was only one problem – due to COVID he wasn’t even allowed to leave his suburb.

“I launched this brand and the first selling period I couldn’t leave my 5km radius,” Duncan said.

“I would employ couriers and friends interstate, I’d ship them the garmentsI’d set up an appointment and they’d put things on a rack and I’d join via Zoom and present them.

“COVID in itself was a huge challenge, and apparel is such a touch and feel product.” Global pandemics aside, starting a clothing business from scratch presented a mountain unto itself for Duncan to climb.

“You get that self-doubt about whether you can actually do it or not,” he said.

“When you’re funding so much of it yourself as well … it makes a major impact on your finances.

“I basically didn’t pay myself for 12 months – it was a major challenge.”

FIT AND READY

However, three years later, Duncan and his team at Anthem are thriving.

Anthem Workwear was recently named a member of the EWIT (Empowered Women in Trades) Alliance.

Duncan said from the get-go Anthem has been striving to equip women tradies with the workwear they need for comfort on and off the tools.

“We spend a lot of time speaking to women in trades to learn what they like and don’t like about products they’ve tried,” he added.

“The range we’ve put together to make people feel comfortable and confident at work and I think for women that’s at the forefront when they head into this workspace.”

Anthem Workwear aims to bridge the gap between onsite apparel and athleisure, no matter the gender (model: Amber White)

Stuck with each other

From the lab-to-site, Cement Australia is there all the way

AS TIME goes by, tradies, hardware stores and building material brands can form special bonds.

Constantly stopping by the same store, chatting with the same team and picking up the same products for the next big build becomes almost as much of a tradition as Friday knock-offs.

For Melbourne bricky Ryan Whipps of Whipps Bricks, his local go-to is Bayswater Mitre 10. His go-to brand? Cement Australia.

“Cement Australia’s consistency is unmatched in my opinion,” he said.

“With other brands, you can get variation in colour and things like that – but you just don’t get that with Cement Australia.

“It’s a premium brand and you know you’ll get a good result every time.”

QUITE THE BOND

When Ryan found out Bayswater Mitre 10 would be stocking Cement Australia’s new Low Carbon Cement, he couldn’t wait to get his hands on some. He needed cement for brick walls at a nine-home build in Knox (east Melbourne).

The Low Carbon Cement is a sustainable alternative to Cement Australia’s General Purpose (GP) Cement, but is made with 30 per cent less embodied carbon. Bayswater Mitre 10 manager Rob Vanderkolk was more than happy to set Ryan up with bags of Low Carbon Cement for his project.

“We’ve supplied the cement to a couple of regulars – there’s a lot of interest and benefits from using it,” he said.

“At the moment, we’re just letting people know about it and if it’s suitable for their project, we can arrange for it to be supplied.”

TRUE BLUE AND TRUSTED Ryan has been a Cement Australia user for about six years, using products such as their Off-White Cement, Hydrated Lime and GP Cement.

“We get all our stock

through Bayswater Mitre 10, they’ve always got what we need and that’s Cement Australia stuff,” Ryan said.

Low Carbon Cement uses a sustainable mixture featuring Cement Australia’s new GreenCem™ technology. This technology –developed in-house by Cement Australia – uses materials such as fly ash while maintaining early setting strength similar to GP Cement. It was developed at Cement Australia’s NATA - accredited testing laboratory in Brisbane. Like other Cement Australia products, tradies can rely on Low Carbon Cement to perform to a high standard, while at the same time being environmentally friendly.

Aussie built ALLSAW takes cutting to a new level

FOR THE ULTIMATE

problem solver, tradies have come to appreciate the power and versality of Arbortech’s ALLSAW.

It’s latest iteration – the BA200X Cordless saw –adds a tonne of new flare and flavour to make clean masonry cuts without drama.

PRIME CUTS

The ALLSAW is known for its patented blade designs, which elevate the tool above traditional circular saw masonry cutting tools.

“Circular blades can be dangerous and dusty and because of the geometry of the blade, you can never cut in a square,” Arbortech CEO Sven Blicks said.

The geometry of each ALLSAW blade is uniquely designed for a specific type of cut.

Not only does this make the cut more accurate, but cleaner as well.

“You don’t have fine dust coming from every cut, instead larger particles at very low velocity,” Sven added.

The new ALLSAW also makes it super easy for tradies to swap blades, with a simple click-on function added – a small change to make things even more efficient.

The BA200X ALLSAW can be configured with a bunch of great blades, each uniquely designed to cut different sizes and depths.

Rising energy costs meet innovative solutions: The Rinnai Enviroflo Heat Pump range

WITH ENERGY COSTS on the rise and environmental concerns becoming ever more pressing, the need for smarter, greener solutions has never been greater. The Rinnai Enviroflo heat pump range represents a leap forward in hot water technology, delivering exceptional performance while championing sustainability and affordability. This article delves into how these innovative systems combine exceptional performance with costeffectiveness.

In Australia, where the rising cost of living and soaring utility bills

are putting significant stress on families, hot water systems stand out as one of the biggest energy consumers. For this reason, investing in a high-quality heat pump is essential, as a well-designed system helps minimise energy consumption and reduces the need for frequent maintenance, making it a smart choice for long-term savings and efficiency.

The Rinnai Enviroflo range rises to the challenge, offering versatile options that cater to diverse installation needs across the country.

With a wide selection of models and variants, the heat pump range is designed to meet various household sizes, functionality, and water usage requirements. Significantly, the new AR and GR series heat pump water heaters stand out for their cutting-edge technology, exceptional performance, outstanding energy efficiency, and low operating noise levelssolidifying their position as market leaders.

COST EFFECTIVE

Patrick Corcoran, Rinnai’s Group Manager for product strategy,

planning and distribution, emphasises the energysaving benefits of the Enviroflo electric hot water system in contrast to traditional models.

“Heat pump hot water systems use an efficient refrigeration cycle to extract heat from the surrounding air. They then use a specifically engineered heat exchanger to heat water in the insulated storage cylinder,” Patrick said.

“The Australian designed and manufactured Rinnai Enviroflo AR range typically uses around 60 to 75 per cent less electricity than a conventional electric hot water system. This is because the electricity is used to operate the heat pump and doesn’t heat the water directly with an element.”

By utilising advanced refrigeration technology to effectively capture and transfer thermal energy from the surrounding air into stored water,

Rinnai continues to be a the forefront of sustainable and efficient heat pump technology for Aussie homes

the Enviroflo system’s efficiency, as measured by the coefficient of performance (COP), increases as the ambient air temperature rises.

The Enviroflo system boasts components to contribute to this efficiency, including a high-performance compressor, doublewall heat exchanger, integrated two-speed fan and evaporator, intelligent controls, and the use of environmentally friendly R290 refrigerant.

“R290 Refrigerant is a sustainable and non-toxic refrigerant,” Patrick added.

“It has a zero Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) and a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of just 0.02, which is 50 times

Images: Rinnai

less than CO2. As such, it easily outperforms other heat pumps that typically use refrigerants with higher GWP values.

“The AR series features a larger compressor, enabling faster water heating times. Our cloudbased WiFi app allows you to control your hot water system remotely.

“Additionally, the AR series offers improved COP

and Seasonal Thermal Efficiency, indicating superior performance compared to previous models.”

SUITS ALL NEEDS

Building on these advanced features, Enviroflo heat pumps are available in a wide range of sizes, from 215L to 340L, offering a blend of innovative technology

and sustainable practices that ensure optimal performance while minimising environmental impact. The range includes the Enviroflo AR series, which can be customised with magnesium or hard water anodes to suit different applications and site conditions. With storage capacities of 300L and 340L, this series represents Australia’s

largest selection of integrated residential heat pumps.

Rinnai’s Australian designed and built Enviroflo AR Series Heat Pump range comes in a variety of sizes to suit a home’s needs

Rinnai has designed the Enviroflo systems to be not only highly efficient but also cost-effective. Enviroflo’s innovative design makes them eligible for government incentives under programs like the Federal Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme, which offers small-scale technology certificates (STCs). Additionally, statespecific benefits, such as Victorian Energy Efficiency Certificates (VEECs) and New South Wales Energy Savings Certificates (ESCs), combined with Enviroflo’s efficiency make them a cost-effective choice.

The Rinnai Enviroflo range seamlessly blends innovative technology, environmental responsibility, and costeffective advantages. With a generous warranty backing their Enviroflo range and over 50 years of delivering reliable home solutions, Rinnai ensures users can enjoy peace of mind and exceptional comfort. New horizon

Irish chippy falls in love with tradie life

Chippy Richard Field has been here, there and everywhere. The Irish tradie, however, has carved out tremendous success in Australia

RICHARD’S been across the globe, but each chapter has always involved carpentry in some capacity. Like many Irish tradies, he left his homeland when the GFC had erased nearly any work for the industry.

After working in South Africa and the United States, Richard received a mentorship in quantitative surveying.

His portfolio got even thicker when he moved to New Zealand (via SouthEast Asia) where he got stuck into the finance side of things.

“I absolutely loved it –learning about investment banking, accounting, property management,” he said.

“I got really lucky twice because I got the learn the project management side of things from quantity surveying, and then again learning about the finance and investment side.”

THE EAST (ABBEY )SIDE

After a lot of travelling, Richard’s permanently settled in Australia. He went into business with Irish schoolmate Niall Howell to build Abbeyside Carpentry out of Randwick in Sydney.

“When I started, I helped Niall with pricing,” Richard said.

“That was two years ago - the turnover now is seven figures.”

Between the two of them, Abbeyside Carpentry has become a power team of about 20 on-site tradies – which may double in 2025 according to Richard – as well as a team of estimators in the office.

“We have a great group of people in the company –excellent carpenters and awesome people in the office. We have a fantastic culture within our teams,” Richard said.

“We built the company on the slogan of ‘tradition carpentry, taken to the next level’.

“What we mean by that is we don’t just do doors, we don’t just do roofing or flooring, we don’t just do one thing.

“We’re traditional chippies; if it’s timber –we do it.”

As well as being a great team of chippies, Abbeyside Carpentry has and continues to support WILL2LIVE and its founder Will Hawes

PLEASE COME HOME

In recent months, Ireland has been pushing for its traversing tradies to come home to tackle the nation’s own housing crisis.

Richard himself appeared on Sunrise, where he discussed the reluctance for he and his brethren to leave sunny Australia for Ireland.

“If I was a little more honest on Sunrise, I would’ve said ‘it’s a bit f*cking rich to be asking us back now’,” Richard said.

“the same government watched us tradies leave in our thousands whilst they collapsed our industries and livelihoods while they bailed out the banks.

“Short memories, whilst

now asking the same people to bail them out of a housing crisis they created.”

Richard said there was plenty keeping Irish tradies occupied in Australia.

“For starters, the Irish and Aussie’s love a beer,” he said.

“The weather, outdoor activites, lifestyle and career opportunities (especially in construction) is a strong argument to deny (returning).”

EVERY LITTLE BIT

Richard is also a Director at a grass roots charity called WILL2LIVE- an initiative that helps feed Sydney’s homeless as well as equip them with the tools to get back into the workforce.

TRADIE PROFILE

His company, Abbeyside, are currently building the new WILL2LIVE CENTRE which will have a commercial kitchen to feed the homeless and less fortunate, a not-for-profit café that will also train up disadvantage community members in coffee making and hospitality as well as changing rooms and laundry services for the those who don’t have any. The new centre will be a place where everyone is welcome and all are equal. The entire project is donation and volunteer based.

If you wish to help make this dream come true for the people WILL2LIVE assist on a daily basis you can donate on their website will2live.org.au/ donations

THE MALE PROBLEM, THE EMOTIONAL REASON AND NOW THERE IS VERTICA®, THE ‘LIFE-CHANGING’ SOLUTION

MEN encountering difficulties with their sexual function often do not know how to cope.

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is often feared due to the intense shame, leading many men to avoid treatment. These problems often bring with them difficulties on a much broader scale – such as a decrease in self-confidence and male image, depression, functional difficulties, and above all, a feeling of helplessness with respect to intimacy and marital life.

Ohh-Med Medical has developed Vertica®, a clinically tested medical device for the home treatment of erectile dysfunction. The device operates through

radio waves and addresses the root cause - ageing collagen fibers and blood leakage. Apart from reducing sexual function, ED has significant emotional and mental consequences. Dr. Daniella Mazor, a certified sexologist, explained: “Men are not used to talking about their feelings, and it’s not accepted by society either, so when something intimate happens, men usually won’t share it with their partners or friends.”

Alongside emotional therapy, modern medicine has innovative solutions to treat the problem. The Vertica® Treatment is performed by the man himself, at home and at his own pace. There is no need for a doctor’s prescription, and the man can essentially treat himself discreetly, without sharing his condition with others and feeling embarrassed about it.

Developed by urologists, Vertica® has been described as ‘revolutionary’ by doctors after a clinical trial revealed it improved erectile dysfunction in more than 85% of participants. Some men reported experiencing positive results in just four weeks, and this lasted up to at least six months after the conclusion of the trial.

Radiofrequency devices use safe levels of low-frequency electromagnetic waves to generate heat that slips into the skin’s layers, which has already been proven to stimulate the remodeling of collagen, a protein that supports normal function of the erectile mechanism.

Vertica® works in a similar way, and in contrast

to medical solutions based on improving blood flow to the penis, such as prescription drugs, the medical device relies on the use of low-frequency radio waves to ‘warm’ the collagen and elastin fiber tissues in the penis, which ‘renews and rejuvenates’ them.

The device is designed to restore the physical mechanism that ‘traps’ the blood in the organ for a sustained amount of time and subsequently improved performance for a lengthy period.

Vertica® is TGA registered ARTG No: 458 309 in Australia.

For a limited time, Vertica® is also being offered at a 20% pre-order discount.

Cyber chase

Are tradies being safe with their data?

NOWADAYS, digital scams are everywhere, and cybercriminals are always on the lookout to snag businesses’ hardearned cash.

In Australia, a cybercrime is reported every six minutes1 - yep, you read that right! What’s worse is about 43 per cent of cyberattacks in Australia target small businesses2

This includes hardworking tradies, who pour their blood, sweat and tears into their operations.

From fake invoices in your email to scam calls using fake AI voices, scammers have a ton of tricks up their sleeves.

If you’re a tradie running your own gig, data safety may not be at the top of your to-do list. You might assume that hackers wouldn’t bother with a small business like yours which means you might not have a cyber risk plan in place, making your business a perfect target for cyber criminals.

DIGITAL EXPOSURE

Here are some common cyber risks for tradies and tips on how to avoid them: -

• Checking your bank account on public Wi-Fi: Avoid making payments or checking your accounts on public networks. If conducting

business on the go is a must, stick to trusted, secure networks.

• Using the same password everywhere: This can be a big red flag. Instead, use a password manager for complicated passwords and enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) wherever possible.

• Not paying close attention to invoices: Scammers may send fake invoices, hoping you’ll pay without double-checking the details.

Always verify that the account info matches what you have on file, especially for invoices from trusted suppliers. If something looks off, call to confirm the change instead of replying to the email or SMS.

• Hitting snooze on

security updates: Cybercriminals thrive on known vulnerabilities. Make sure to accept security updates on your devices as soon as they come through.

• Clicking dodgy links: Always double-check the sender’s email address before clicking on any links. If you’re uncertain, go directly to the organisation’s website or call the contact to verify.

STAY PROTECTED

Even with the latest software updates and antivirus programs, cybercriminals may still find a way in to your systems. That’s where Cyber Liability insurance may come in handy. This insurance is designed to cover losses from

Fake phone calls are getting smarter by the day, with some using AI voices pretending to be someone you know

things like data breaches, business interruptions, and the expenses that follow a cyberattack. Last year, small businesses faced costs averaging $49,600 per cyberattack1! That’s a hefty bill for any tradie to deal with alone, so having the right protections is super important.

Cyber Liability insurance not only helps you financially if something goes wrong, but many policies also give you access to a 24/7 IT support hotline, so you can get the help you need to stop an attack and minimise the damage.

funnels Fishing and

Passages, entrances, bars, creek and river mouths

Every keen fisho and boaty will understand the thrill of calculated risk when entering or exiting a bar or river mouth. It’s a feeling of trepidation and excitement. A jumble of wind, tide and current. These places represent the turnstile of life flowing in and out of a natural choke-point or funnel. Places where both predator and prey intertwine in a deadly mixture.

Whether we are talking about a mountain stream trickling down to the sea in Tasmania. Perhaps the heads at Sydney Harbour or a creek or river mouth anywhere across northern Australia, certain fundamentals remain constant. Let’s have a look at what makes these places special from a fishing perspective.

Words and Images: Tim O’Reilly

Boom and bust

These areas by nature are prone to cyclical flooding. At the whim of the weather from wherever it blows. Boom and bust cycles caused by upstream events coupled with the extremes of opening up to the ocean or sea. A river mouth changes day in day out as flow meets tide, in clarity, depth, siltation, oxygen levels. The fishing is not likely to be red hot all the time, the elements play a very large part in the game. When tidal influences meet extremes in the weather you can usually give the fishing away. Unsettled tides and strong persistent trade winds are a recipe for disaster in many of these locations. The difference between seeing them serene and colourful or bulging and brown is huge. Generally more settled conditions are the best time to explore these funnels of water.

The biomass

Many species that might reside elsewhere will use these places to transition. Often moving between estuarine, coastal and offshore environments. This combination of fluctuating species must all pass through a channel, passage, bar or mouth. At some stage of their life cycle, transiting through.

Fisherman from the earliest of days have been targeting the biomass of species, following seasonal fluctuations entering their realm. Understanding these fluctuations is the key to subsistence for many. Knowing when a certain baitfish or crustacean is in abundance and how this

aligns with hungry predators. Modern fishers use these same principles, placing maximum effort where fish are concentrated in a smaller area. Movement in and out of these tight squeezes is often performed under the cover of darkness. You might be surprised to see a large biomass of life stream into a shallower, more protected area to feed and hang out during the night. The men in grey suits (sharks) are never too far behind the bait and biomass. Look to keep your swimming time very short around all these places on dark. It’s risky business and as many will attest, getting riskier by the minute with inshore shark populations very healthy.

Passages, entrances and bars

These are tumultuous areas typified by a large inlet or river pushing out through a relatively narrow thoroughfare of water. Being amongst the most exposed to the forces of wind, wave and tide, they are also great concentrators of fish and marine life. Many pelagic species of fish will cut laps between the sea and these locations, showing up to feed on baitfish schools that enjoy the nutrient rich, higher current flow areas. Down in the more southern regions of Australia, large swell can make these places extremely hazardous and only experienced boaties should be crossing bars and passages, especially in rough conditions. Up in the north of Australia, it is usually the shallow nature of these places that poses most risk. Almost all passages and bars are sandy and prone to shifting following the previous wet

Big barra living on the tiniest rainforest drain

FEATURE

season (Dec - April). Strong winds can also shift sand right up Australia’s east coast.

This passage drift would be an annual occurrence in many Australian contexts if not for human intervention. With many of our passages and bars reinforced to prevent them from shifting around population centres. This has a multi-faceted impact on the ecology and fishery as different structure and water flows are created. Regardless, rock walls and other man-made structures tend to be good fishing spots as structure simply attracts fish.

Predatory fish will shift around constantly, not necessarily staying in a passageway but visiting all the same. Birds are a fantastic calling card for predatory fish action. Anything hovering just above the surface is a sure signal of baitfish being eaten. Everything from tuna, mackerel, trevally, queenfish, barracuda, kingfish, tailor and Australian salmon might show up under hovering gulls and terns.

The last half of the run in tide can be particularly good at concentrating bait and predators close behind. There will usually be a feeding period around dawn and dusk. A brisk outgoing tide can also trigger the action as baitfish leave the estuary or bay. The reality is, that every passage, entrance and bar will be different and the whole range of tidal cycles and water levels might play a factor. Seasonal distribution of fish species plays perhaps the most crucial element in the fishing picture.

Creek mouths

Perhaps the most fishy of all these locations is the humble creek mouth. Usually a small body of water providing an interface between estuary and coast. Creek mouths are probably the most consistent place to catch large barramundi. Modern techniques have definitely challenged this assumption, however the choke point nature of a creek mouth provides the ambush point we are looking for.

In many Australian coastal estuaries it is shallow around the mouth. Navigation is often tricky in all but the

biggest of creeks. A high tide is often required to move around freely within these systems. They are particularly enjoyable to fish on foot. Even if it means parking the boat up quietly and walking the bank. Many of my most memorable fishing experiences are bare foot at a creek mouth flinging surface lures on dusk.

Creek mouths tend to fire up early morning and late afternoon. Low light conditions tend to be a focal point of activity. The last half of a run out tide and the first hour of run in tend to be when most of the action is had. A late afternoon low tide change is pretty much bang on in many instances.

Modern technology allows us a few genuine pleasures when fishing creek mouths. We can look up the weather, know exactly what time the tide changes and use Apps to tell us approximate fish bite windows. Google Earth makes it easier to predict fishing spots and understand creek mouth setups. It doesn’t matter if you are in a Cape York creek mouth or on Tasmania’s south coast. Every system will have a deeper channel undulating around a creek mouth’s entrance. Depth sounders and fish finders help unlock these secrets at times they cannot be deciphered with sunnies alone.

River mouths

Here we are talking about more substantial bodies of water having moved from stream to river to estuary and finally to the sea. River mouths are often wide bodies of water, especially in the bigger drainage basins flowing to the Australian coast. We are a dry continent, but the vastness of ecological time has dissected our coastline full of inlets drained by rivers.

River mouths normally represent the interface between inland freshwater and coastal saltwater. It can be a game of push and shove between tidal influence and natural river flow. But many rivers dry for part of the season before springing wildly to life under heavy downpours. As such many of Australia’s rivers are dominated by saltwater estuaries around their mouth.

Australian river mouths are massively varied both

ecologically and geographically. Twenty five thousand kilometres of coastline spreads them apart. Much of the country has arid coastline without much river presence at all. But across the top and right down the east and south east corners of the continent, things get interesting. Tides tend to play a huge influence on the fish around river mouths. Look for holes, gutters and any deep structure. Look for fish transitioning in and out of the river mouth corners with the tide. Look for colour changes and current merges, places where bait highways seem the most likely. Trolling can be a very effective way to cover fishing options in a mouth.

Aussie context

Australia’s rivers might not be much when compared to some of the gigantic systems in North and South America, Asia and Africa. But they do mostly have quite healthy fisheries, sustained partly by strict regulation and partly due to high standard of living reducing subsistence fishing. Water quality is a huge factor weighing on an increasingly large number of Australian rivers. In a country whose population gathers around river mouths and the fragile coastline. Changes in upstream flow tends to be where food webs come crashing down and ecological shift is rife. Dams, weirs and barrages far upstream play a steadying role on many river mouths. Yet they also shift the balance in population distribution.

Despite being a relatively small population of people, Australia finds a way to put a heavy toll on our environment. Degradation, erosion, clearing and loss of riparian habitat are all critical upstream factors that effect water quality at the river mouth. Yet clearly our challenges are solvable when people work together. We are a clever country and

people very much value nature and the ability to head out and catch a fish.

It's no revelation that the further you get away from other people, the better the fishing becomes. Not in every instance, but the majority of cases. But despite the location, fishers who understand the dynamics of these wild and unkempt places can normally put dinner on the table. It definitely helps to have a fishing plan that covers a few bases. If this isn’t working, what do I do next?

Almost all tactics might come into play. Jigging, vibing, surface lures, metal slices, flies, baits, trolling lures. Of course the tactics chosen will depend on your area, the tides, the bait, the freshwater inflow and a host of marrying factors. Having a selection of spinning and overhead outfits to cast, jig and troll is useful in most circumstances. If you want to achieve constant results when fishing your local area, make sure to spend the time needed to understand these choke or funnel points and swims through them.

women to the front

Blundstone’s

#9961

and #9960 Rotoflex® Safety Boots

In days gone by, female tradies had no choice but to buy safety workwear designed for blokes. With more women picking up the tools than ever, Blundstone is delivering more boots than ever to support them

BLUNDSTONE’S #9961 AND #9960 SAFETY BOOTS

feature all the cutting-edge tech the brand is known for, with the added emphasis on comfort for women on-site. It’s an issue both Rosie Dillon and Jayde van Dyke from Ninety Three Group have dealt with a lot in their time as tradies.

They were stoked to be trying out these #9961s and #9960s on-site for us.

They tried on the boots on a new residential build at Bentleigh in South East Melbourne.

TEST #1: MADE FOR WOMEN

So, is there really that much difference between men’s and women’s feet? Tradies might be surprised. Typically, women’s feet are shorter and narrower, so it’s not really a case of just picking a smaller men’s boot.

“These have been great to transition into wearing women’s work boots for the first time,” Rosie said.

“They’re really comfortable.”

Blundstone has moulded both boots to ensure the size, length and width all cater to a women’s foot.

“These boots give me a new level of confidence when it comes to working at heights, working on trusses and top plates,” Jayde said.

The safety boots have been fitted with a footbed designed specifically for women - built with a softer PU and a silky plush velvet top sheet, to support women like Rosie and Jayde.

Just because a boot’s made for the hard yards

Tradies are rarely standing still , meaning an agile boot is crucial
As more women pick up the tools, the need for female-specific workwear continues to grow

doesn’t mean it can’t be comfier than a cushion.

“The comfort between the #9961s and other boots is night and day,” Jayde said.

I really appreciated the ankle support these boots give

Another feature Jayde loved was the side zips, which made it easy to secure the boot, and take off when it was time to finish

The #9961s are built for the rough terrains of a worksite, with comfy footbed cushioning for max comfort

Rosie and Jayde were ecstatic to finally wear work boots tailored to their feet

“The #9961s were like having clouds on my feet –they felt super supportive.”

TEST #2: BUILT TOUGH

In terms of breaking the ‘soft and delicate’ stigmas women in trades deal with on a constant basis, both boots do a pretty great job of putting the foot down.

The #9960 and #9961 boots are just as hardcore as other Blundstone products, with all the features women in trades need for heavy duty workloads.

Both boots include a steel toe cap, offering cut and compression-resistance to 200 joule impact, and a Nitrile Rubber outsole heat-resistant to 300°C.

Rosie said given the variety of terrain she walked across on a daily basis, these boots handled every rock, plank and slab like a champion.

“I really appreciated the ankle support these boots give,” Jayde added.

“When you’re a woman working at different heights and angles, you need to be able to trust that your ankles aren’t going to give when things get rough.”

THESE BOOTS ARE MADE FOR WALKIN’

The RotoFlex range has been built to intergrate Infinergy® by BASF - an E-TPU super-elastic energy foam that’s softly cushioned to reduce the impact of every step.

Blundstone’s #9961s and #9960s offer everything a hard-working female tradie needs to tackle the worksite.

“I love ‘em, they’re going well so far,” Jayde said. “I’m just glad they’re not leopard.”

Cement Australia’s Low Carbon Cement

A GP Cement equivalent that’s good for the environment?

Cement Australia struts its innovation with the new Low Carbon Cement

MORE AND MORE tradies are looking at ways to lessen their environmental footprint.

Whether it’s their materials or tools; companies are trying to keep up with the sustainable demands of their tradie customers.

Gone are the days, however, where tradies would need to sacrifice quality for sustainability. Cement Australia proves that by delivering a Low Carbon Cement that’s as good for certain jobs as it is for the environment.

Just how good is this Low Carbon Cement? We grabbed a few bags and hit up bricky Ryan Whipps from Whipps Bricks. He was using the Low Carbon Cement for walls at a residential build at Knox to Melbourne’s east.

TEST #1: SUSTAINABLE SETTER

Environmentally-minded tradies such as Ryan will love this cement. It’s made with 30 per cent less embodied carbon than Cement Australia’s General Purpose (GP) Cement.

was loving the high quality of the Low Carbon Cement, thanks largely to its GreenCem™ technology

BRAND:

“It’s great to know we’re using a product that’s better for the environment,” Ryan added.

We’ll put this into perspective - if tradies only used Low carbon Cement, it would be the equivalent to saving the same amount of carbon stored in a forest the size of Melbourne.

The Low Carbon Cement is an Aussie first in a lot of ways, including being the first product of its type to be on the Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) register.

Ryan
Not just Low Carbon Cement; Ryan and Whipps Bricks use a bunch of products from Cement Australia’s range

The EPD Australasia register hosts verified documents from brands across Australia that provide data on the lifecycle environmental impact of a product.

TEST #2: SMOOTH MOVER

Cement Australia is able to offer a Low Carbon Cement option through the use of its newly developed GreenCem™ Technology. This formula uses fly ash and other supplementary cementitious material in the mixture.

Traditionally, fly ash has reduced early setting strength, however Cement Australia’s GreenCem™ avoids that.

Thanks to GreenCem™, the Low Carbon Cement has an early setting strength comparable to GP Cement.

“We’ll be using the Low Carbon Cement for most of our projects we’d be using GP Cement for,” Ryan said.

“We’ve been using it for bricks and blocks as well as core filling –it’s been awesome for everything we’ve needed it for.”

Depending on the mixture, Low Carbon Cement can improve the workability and pumpability while maintaining the same durability requirements as seen in GP cement.

FORWARD THINKING

Ryan’s been a loyal Cement Australia customer for as long as he can remember. The Low Carbon Cement is the latest (sustainable) chapter in the relationship.

“The mortar is just as smooth and consistent as the other Cement Australia products we use,” Ryan said.

“You’re making a difference to the environment, without making a difference to the quality of your work.”

When you stack up the environmental benefits and the enhanced performance with GreenCem™, there’s tonnes of reasons for tradies to consider the Low Carbon Cement

Ramset™’s TrakFast™ 65 draw tough TRADIE TESTS

Meet the new nailer that’s all gas, and no brakes. Ramset™’s new TrakFast™ 65 unleashes more of everything a tradie needs to get the job done fast, powerfully and properly

NOW MORE than ever, tradies need a compelling reason to drop their current nailer in favour of a new one.

Ramset™ has loaded its new TrakFast™ 65 with a tonne of features that makes it a true upgrade for those working on framing or track and partitioning work.

Nathan ‘Nath’ Dowell is one such tradie who uses gaspower nailers for framing all the time, across a tonne of different materials.

Fortunately for Nath, the newest TrakFast™ 65 is built to work for long days of hard work with consistent results.

We joined Nath at a site in Melbourne’s east for this Tough Test.

TEST #1: POWER TO THE PEOPLE

The TrakFast™ 65 is Ramset™’s most powerful gaspowered cordless tool, delivering an awesome 105J of impact power in every shot.

“You can tell this is the most powerful nailer of its kind on the market right now,” Nath said.

BRAND:

Nath had a go pinning down a few frames as well as a few c-channels and into concrete for some formwork.

That 105J of power was put to good use as Nath cruised through pinning timber to concrete, timber sheeting and steel c-channels with ease.

When using the tool, Nath loved the limited recoil the TrakFast™ 65 had compared to other tools he’s used
No matter the material, Nath had no dramas getting through thick timber and concrete among other materials
It’s like having another chippy on deck

“This is amazing,” Nath said.

“I was really impressed … I can’t fault this at all, it handled everything I threw at it.”

Given its name, it only makes sense that the TrakFast™ 65 can shoot up to 65mm length pins, which is another handy upgrade over its predecessors.

“Being able to shoot 65s makes light work for pinning down thicker frames and c-channel,” Nath added.

“I don’t need to change anything with the tool, I can just slide the smaller pins out and chuck the big 65mm ones in and away we go.”

TEST #2: BUILT FOR BETTER

Not just from a power and capacity point of view; the TrakFast™ 65 is built with convenience in mind.

The tool can deliver 10,000 shots per battery charge – pair that with a high-capacity gas canister and Nath has enough ‘oomph’ to do an entire residential frame in one sitting.

“No need to go get PA charges, no more reloading all the time, away you go,” Nath said.

“It leaves my old tool in the dust.”

Speaking of dust, the TrakFast™ 65 eliminates predrilling and delivers a clean shot with little-to-no dust created. Despite its large capacity, the TrakFast™ 65 was super light and compact, making it easy for Nath to clip on his belt and whip out when he needed to.

TRACKING WELL

Ramset™’s TrakFast™ 65 is designed for all-round convenience for tradies. Aside from all the major talking points Nath pointed out during the test, the tool has a tonne of ‘one per centers’ that combine to make it true upgrade to the tool kit.

“It’s an unreal bit of kit,” Nath said.

“It’s definitely getting added to my arsenal – it’s like having another chippy on deck.

“There’s so many steps taken out to make it quick and easy to use – you just gas ‘n’ go!”

PumpSmarter not harder

Testo’s 565i Smart Vacuum Pump

For HVAC&R tradies, every second on the job counts. Testo continues to innovate, helping tradies save time on jobs and making every task more efficient, and no more is that evident than with their new 565i Smart Vacuum Pump

EVACUATION JOBS on refrigeration systems and heat pumps are notorious for taking technicians hours to do.

A lot of that is standing around watching meters tick on by, all the while other work could be getting done.

In-keeping with its drive to modernise HVAC&R processes, Testo has introduced the new 565i Smart Vacuum Pump to suck tonnes of time out of each job.

Technician Vito Giarratana from V&G Refrigeration Services was more than up to the task for testing the 565i out on a refrigeration unit in Bentleigh.

Testo has two 565i models differentiated by the pump capacity; one with a flow rate of 7cfm and the other 10cfm. We have tested the former.

TEST #1: VAC-ATION

Vito needed the 565i to vacuum a refrigeration system before putting refrigerant back into it.

It was super simple and quick for Vito to attach the necessary hoses to the unit, and he was blown away by just how quickly it worked.

“We needed to bring the unit down to about 300 microns,” Vito said.

“We’ve pressure tested it to make sure it’s tight … in the 14 mins we were chatting after starting it up, it was already below 1000 microns which is really great.”

Once the target vacuum level is achieved, the 565i with a 552i Vacuum Probe connected via Bluetooth® will automatically begin the vacuum holding test to check

Vito was pumped (get it?) by the results of the 565i

We also used a testo 552i Vacuum Probe during this test, which delivered updates and measurements to Vito via the Smart App

tightness. Vito undertook this process with the added peace of mind that the 565i’s one-way/non-return valve would keep things from going sideways.

“You can do everything right – but sometimes things can go wrong,” he said.

“You could pressure test – there’s no leaking and you put it on VAC – but then the electrician will shut off the power and you’ve lost the VAC.

“When that happens, you could suck in a lot of moisture, so you’ll have to spend a lot of time cleaning the system.

“The fact this has a one-way valve is probably the key feature for me.

“It means I can go and do other work and know this won’t lose VAC if something goes wrong.”

TEST #2: ON THE APPS

Like other Testo tools, the 565i utilises the testo Smart App.

“If something’s happened during the process, I can see it on the app,” Vito said.

“I can see exactly what time it switched off, who’s responsible and what’s happened.”

The app seamlessly connects to the vacuum pump and vacuum probe, which means technicians like Vito aren’t stuck by the equipment when they could be doing other jobs.

“I could see it on my phone from anywhere else in the building.”

“I checked in while I was doing other stuff and could see the vacuum was still pulling.”

Even better; Vito was pumped to be able to generate customised reports via the app, which included measurements, graphics ... the works!

All easily accessible for him and his customers.

Not only is the 565i all for the modern tradie,

but it’s also built for the rising use of flammable refrigerants in classes A3 and A2L.

While Vito mostly works with freon, he said it was awesome to use a vacuum that catered to a wide array of refrigerants.

PUMP IT UP

The work Vito was doing only ended up taking about 3 1/2 hours, which for the work he was doing was incredibly quick.

“To hold at about 300 microns was unreal, I was really impressed with how it performed,” he said. For technicians working in smaller teams – or even solo – this vacuum is designed to work without constant supervision to allow for maximum efficiency on-site.

A Game-changer for tradies facing ED

Get wood

THERE ARE FEW things more frustrating when something just doesn’t work. Whether you’re at a construction site, working out and - let’s be honest - in the bedroom. For tradies, this struggle can take on a whole new meaning thanks to erectile dysfunction (ED), which affects around 350 million men around the globe.

Daniel Lischinsky, the founder and CEO of OhhMed Medical, points out that while many blokes know they have a problem,

nailing a solution isn’t quite as simple. There’s no shortage of treatments available, from pills, wipes, online courses and meditation techniques. However, a new tool has emerged on the market, offering game-changing technology and a new approach to tackling ED.

ENTER VERTICA

For those who have tried countless medications and procedures to combat ED, meet Vertica. This sleek device takes a fresh approach by using radio frequency technology to stimulate the collagen fibres in the penis. Lischinsky explains that ED usually results from

“venous leakage,” which is linked to damaged collagen fibres.

“Erectile dysfunction typically stems from reduced blood flow or leakage during an erection, and this can happen as we age when those collagen fibres deteriorate,” he said. “While first and second line therapies for ED all work on increasing blood flow to the penis without treating the underlying causes now, for the first time, penile venous leakage is actually reversible using Vertica’s unique technology.”

This means that men can finally address the underlying issues contributing to their ED instead of just treating the symptoms.

A BIT OF R&D

Any tradie worth their salt wouldn’t bring an untested tool to a job, and the same goes for ED treatments. Vertica has the data to back its effectiveness. Clinical trials at the Neuro-Urology unit at the Rambam Healthcare campus in Israel showed remarkable results, with

success rates for penile erections hitting up to 89 per cent. Professor Ilan Gruanwald, who led the trials, noted that participants reported significant improvements in their sexual quality of life and overall satisfaction. What’s more, unlike many ED treatments that can be affected by alcohol or require a prescription (which can be less discreet), Vertica offers a simple, user-friendly interface. Plus, it’s much less invasive compared

to surgeries or injections, which can be a tough pill to swallow – pardon the pun. To make the most out of Vertica, it’s recommended to use the device three times a week for the first month, then taper down to twice a week and finally once a week. The goal? Not just to fight ED, but to revive the spontaneity and confidence that every bloke deserves in the bedroom. So, if you’re a tradie who’s tired of tools that don’t measure up - whether on the job or in the sack - maybe it’s time to consider a new approach. With Vertica, help is finally at hand, and getting back to peak performance is more achievable than ever.

Reality TV was one thing, but picking up the tools at 30 poses an entirely new (immunity) challenge for Simon Mee

Starring on two seasons of Survivor, and a popular Instagram presence, Simon Mee may be a face you have seen before.

After ten years of working in the corporate world of media marketing and advertising, Simon Mee decided to jump ship and become an apprentice carpenter at age 30.

Leaving his comfortable corporate job during the COVID lockdowns in 2020 was a massive leap for Simon.

“I remember being at work and looking out the window to the blue sky and thinking there had to be more to it,” Simon said.

“I was going stir crazy.”

Simon is now a newly qualified carpenter working on residential new builds and renovations across Brisbane.

“It is definitely late for some to pick up a physical trade at 30,” he said.

“But I’ve never looked back. It’s been a fantastic change for me.”

THE TRANSITION

The transition, however, was not all sunshine and rainbows. Leaving a healthy salary with a great career progression to working for minimum wage for four years while getting certified at age 34 was a daunting prospect for Simon.

“At school the narrative was that smart kids go to university, and dumb kids do a trade. It was really clear cut,” Simon said.

“It’s been really empowering to identify the opportunity but also follow through with it.”

Witnessing a build come together gives Simon great job satisfaction.

“When you’re seeing the house come together and you have a conversation with the neighbours who say it looks great, there is a great sense of pride that I wasn’t necessarily getting with my corporate job,” he said.

Outside of the tradie world, Simon enjoys

getting out and about in the Queensland sun, surfing, body-boarding and spending time with his one year old daughter.

SOCIAL MEDIA REACH

With a growing social media presence, Simon’s Instagram has allowed for a greater connection to other tradies and people wanting to follow a similar pathway.

“A lot of people have asked about my experiences and being able to share my journey and encourage people to make the change to becoming a tradie has been amazing,” Simon said.

“The connections I’ve made on Instagram with tradies doing similar content to me has been great. We can share info and tips with one another. They have been powerful connections.”

“It’s important to surround yourself with good people.”

ADVICE

Pulling a career 180 has given Simon some unique insights into switching up careers. His advice to people wanting a career in trade is to make the most of every opportunity that comes your way.

“You have to really want it,” Simon said.

“It’s a hard slog but at the end of the day if you’re doing it for the right reasons, it will be so worth it in the long run.”

With 16 years of experience under his belt, Marcus Luscombe has gone from an eager 17-year-old apprentice to proud business owner of paint company, Vivid Coats

Marcus on the tools

LEANING into his creative side and taking a job on a whim has led Marcus towards a rewarding career as a tradie.

“My friend Ryan said that his boss was looking for another apprentice and put in a good word for me. I called him up, started a trial and began my path from there,” Marcus said.

“At the time I was 17 and had just finished VCE. I’d also experienced a great loss with my dad passing away. The distraction of getting out and working was great for me.”

Marcus described how his two mentors helped

prepare him for opening his own business.

“Shane taught me to take pride in my work and always try to do the best job you can for the client. Paint it to last,” Marcus said.

“Gav taught me to give newer methods and approaches a crack and seek perfection.”

“Combined they both taught me to try to have fun at work and work to live, not live to work.”

OPENING A BUSINESS

Marcus opened his business Vivid Coats, and said it was a ‘natural process’, after years of working outside of work hours.

“While working for Gavin, I was taking on smaller

jobs that I did by myself on weekends or after work,” Marcus said.

“This work kept coming steadily and after doing a little project for a family member I was able to create a connection with a builder who was doing the job.”

“He was stoked with the quality of my work, and I was able to rely on some consistent work through him.”

Opening in 2017, Vivid Coats mainly focusses on new builds and repaints.

“We focus on the high end custom new builds, as that aligns with what we are looking to produce for people,” Marcus said.

Transforming a space and creating a new feeling to a room is a key

motivator for Marcus and his team.

“We create spaces from nothing, give it a feeling and character,” Marcus said.

“I love that we can give something a new lease on life by creating spaces for them that they will enjoy and make memories in.”

TRAVEL AND GOLF

A father to three boys, Marcus and his wife Steph enjoy travelling around Australia in their caravan when time allows.

“Away from home and work I’m very keen on golf,” Marcus said.

“I was bitten by the bug pretty hard. I can’t wait for

my boys to be involved and grow to hopefully love the game too.”

Marcus and his team have their eyes set on growing the team at Vivid Coats.

“We teach our staff really well,” Marcus said.

“I’d love to look back in 20 years time and see our

staff all excelling in the industry and hopefully teaching their own apprentices the same way.”

Proper preparation promotes perfect performance

WORKING at the Master Painters Association for the past 19 years, I have seen many instances where consumers have been ripped off by a painter financially or the consumer has had painting works carried out that have been of very poor standard. One recently comes to

mind where a consumer engaged a national franchise holder to carry out painting works to their home. The quotation was very detailed and included every area of work in great detail. The issue was that the painter (the franchise holder) was not capable of completing the works in compliance with the quotation. He isn’t a qualified painter and had purchased the franchise only recently. He quoted to restore windows but these windows were not prepared and hence the outcome was aesthetically poor. The paperwork looked amazing but the workmanship was substandard.

READING BETWEEN THE LINES

Consumers and builders who engage painting

contractors need to also look further than just the paperwork. Ensure your painter is a member of the Master Painters Association, make sure that comparable quotes have been obtained, get references, check to see if the painting contractor is qualified, check and re check payment terms of the contract and make sure the painting contractor has Public Liability Insurance. With the case mentioned above, works were commenced and then the consumer was hit with progress payments after the painter had already obtained a bigger than 50 per cent deposit and the quotation had also stated payment on completion. The consumer engaged the Master Painters Independent Inspector

to carry out an inspection to works, very poor to no preparation to external windows. The painter would only return to rectify the windows, if the client paid them more money. It’s a very difficult situation for the consumer who has lost faith that the painting contractor can complete works to any standard, but the consumer also wants their painting completed.

Unfortunately in the this case, the franchise representative has blamed the poor condition of the original windows, when the painting contractor quoted to restore the windows. The consumer is now in the process of making an application to VCAT, to recoup some of the monies paid to the painter to get their

windows prepared and painted properly.

The Master Painters Association of Victoria have a number of information data sheets on their website to assist and guide consumers when choosing a painting contractor. Consumers and builders engaging painting contractors should do their due diligence, look at reviews, make sure their business has an ABN, see if they have an online presence and always ask to sight previous work if possible. And lastly, don’t hire handyman services to carry out painting restoration works.

EWIT’s transformational 2024: Empowering change globally

WHAT A YEAR 2024 has been for Empowered Women in Trades (EWIT)!

Together, with the unwavering support of our incredible village of EWIT Alliance members, advocates, industry leaders, and Tradie Ladies, we’ve taken bold strides to move the needle toward our ambitious “30 by 30” mission, achieving 30 per cent female representation in skilled trades by 2030. As the year draws to a close, we’re reflecting on the milestones and successes that have brought the village closer to building a future where diversity is encouraged and celebrated.

IMPACTFUL SCHOOL PROGRAMS: BUILDING THE PIPELINE

This year, we wrapped up another incredible run of school-based programs designed to ignite interest in skilled trades among students from Years 7-10. These hands-on, immersive programs allowed young women to explore trades in a psychologically safe environment. The results? Students across Australia have chosen pathways in construction, electrical work, and school-based apprenticeships. Schools like Dromana Secondary College reported an increase in female students selecting VET pathways, while Melton Specialist School celebrated their first female enrolment in Building and Construction for 2025!

THE EWIT GALA: CELEBRATING EXCELLENCE IN TRADES

In February, we hosted the 2nd annual EWIT Gala and Awards Evening—a night dedicated to honouring trailblazers in trades across a multitude of industries including construction, manufacturing and

transport. Over 350 attendees came together to celebrate leaders driving cultural change, with awards such as ‘Tradie Lady of the Year’ and ‘Innovator of Cultural Change.’ This event highlighted the incredible talent within the trades sector and reinforced our commitment to showcasing role models who inspire the next generation. We are very excited for our 2025 Gala in October and can’t wait to celebrate all the game changers in the industry. Get your nominations ready!

EXPANDING GLOBALLY: EWIT’S LAUNCH IN CANADA

A bold and exiting milestones of 2024 was EWIT’s expansion into Canada. Under the leadership of Lexi Gilbert, our Co-Founder and CEO of EWIT Canada, we’ve adapted our proven model of blending recruitment, leadership training, and immersive events to the Canadian skilled trades landscape. With Alberta as our headquarters, Canada’s strong trades community has embraced the “30 by 30” mission, ensuring our movement

HAVE YOUR SAY!

2025 marks one more year closer to 2030, and EWIT’s long term goal of 30 per cent women participation in trades

has a global reach. Together, we’re breaking barriers, addressing labour shortages, and creating a culture where women and genderdiverse individuals can thrive.

ADVOCACY AND INDUSTRY PARTNERSHIPS

2024 was also a year of driving systemic change. EWIT worked alongside NAWIC and Tradeswomen Australia to advocate for women in trades, welcoming federal government measures that address gender inequities in the skilled workforce. Additionally, the EWIT Alliance corporate membership initiative united industry leaders, educational institutions, and government bodies to collectively implement meaningful change. Together, we’re laying the foundation for tangible progress.

TRANSFORMING INDUSTRIES WITH POSITIVE PSYCHOLOGY

EWIT’s work continues to be underpinned by principles of positive psychology, ensuring that every program and partnership fosters confidence, courage,

and a sense of belonging. Through initiatives like the “Kicking Goals in Trades” program with North Melbourne FC’s Freestyle initiative, we inspired students to explore the trades, paving the way for a stronger, more inclusive workforce.

LOOKING AHEAD: A CALL TO ACTION

This year has shown us that it truly takes a village to achieve transformative change. From expanding internationally to inspiring students in classrooms, we’ve seen firsthand the power of community. But there’s still work to do. Achieving 30% representation by 2030 will require all of us to come together leaders, tradespeople, educators, and advocates to continue driving impact, empowering individuals, and transforming industries.

As we gear up for 2025, we invite you to join the EWIT movement. Whether through partnerships, programs, or simply spreading the word, your contribution matters. Together, we can make skilled trades more diverse, dynamic, and successful. Let’s move the needle toward 30 by 30, one impactful step at a time.

Here’s to an extraordinary 2025 of making an impact, empowering people, and transforming industries!

New frontier National Virtual Mentoring Program Launching in 2025!

AS PART of our advocacy in 2024, we put a focus on women in leadership and improving the numbers of women in construction leadership. Opportunities for women to move into leadership roles are a key part of encouraging women to enter the industry. There are many barriers that women face, including mentorship, support and guidance. Women in construction can face a lack of mentor and support systems crucial for career development and

leadership opportunities. It can also hinder professional growth and access to leadership roles. The limited number of women in leadership positions within the construction industry means there are fewer role models to inspire and guide aspiring female leaders. This scarcity can discourage women from pursuing or achieving leadership roles.

MENTORING CONNECTED

We understand from our NAWIC membership survey and from speaking with our members that they are looking for more mentoring opportunities, particularly for those

who are regional, remote or cannot attend an in-person mentoring program.

The National Virtual Mentoring Program is a new NAWIC mentoring program that we are piloting in 2025 which provides a fully virtual mentoring opportunity to our NAWIC members. Complementing our face-to-face mentoring programs run by our chapters, members will be paired up with another mentee or mentor across Australia, based on your goals and career aspirations. You’ll gain access to our mentoring platform, Mentorloop is a community and

networking platform where you will find not only your mentee and mentor, but also a host of mentoring resources, webinars and discussion boards to support you on your mentoring journey.

The National Virtual Mentoring Program is for you if:

PRODUCTIVITY, TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATION

In the welding industry, productivity is imperative to driving innovation and growth. Welding businesses that maximise efficiencies and optimise operations benefit directly from cost savings and better use of resources. Labour, equipment and materials can be more effectively allocated to minimise waste and energy consumption. Productivity gains lead to faster project completion times - enabling companies to exceed client expectations and secure repeat business.

A clear pathway to productivity is through the use of technology. When companies are focused on improving their processes, they naturally innovateimplementing the latest technologies in a bid to streamline operations. However, Australian

companies generally lag their global competitors in digital adoption and unfortunately the welding sector is no exception. Uptake of advanced welding technology remains relatively slow, and this lack of tech adoption is impeding our ability to navigate the current challenges facing the industry.

For instance, the majority of welding businesses are still not leveraging robots or cobots. These technologies work safely work alongside humans, designed to take on mundane and repetitive tasks, freeing up workers to take on high-value tasks.

By leveraging the benefits of cobot welding, businesses can increase their productivity and reduce labour costs, while improving the quality of their welds. Given that the major barriers to productivity are materials handling and a lack of skilled staff, there is a significant opportunity for welding businesses to harness the capabilities of advanced welding technologies to overcome these issues.

Having EWI’s automated welding solutions will greatly assist Australia’s shipbuilding capabilities

A DIRECT PATH TO INNOVATION

One of the most significant outcomes of this partnership is a direct pathway to EWI’s R&D capabilities.
