Artist: Perapong Kireewongse

Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana Krom Luang Naradhiwas Rajanagarindra passed away in 2008, leaving behind a legacy that is still strongly felt in Thai society. Her lifelong learning philosophy focused on promoting education, social work, healthcare, liberal arts, and cultural activities. Her love of classical music was also evident, as she became Thailand's greatest supporter of classical music development.

Born in London on May 6, 1923, Princess Galyani Vadhana was the elder sister of two late kings of Thailand, King Ananthamahidon Phra Atthamaramathibodin and King Bhumibol the Great. She was exposed to classical music at a young age, which led to her deep understanding of the art form.

Her Royal Highness attended classical music performances to support classical musicians and organizations when she was able. In 2000, she donated her personal budget to support music learning for youth, which later became the Fund for Classical Music Promotion Under the Patronage of HRH Princess Galyani Vadhana. This funding has been instrumental in developing young Thai classical musicians who play important roles in raising the standard of Thai classical music today.

The Princess Galyani Vadhana Institute of Music was established to continue Her Royal Highness’ vision of promoting classical music and making it sustainable in the Thai context, as well as to pay tribute to her lifelong dedication to the arts and education.

FROM SONNET TO SEASONS

Antonio Vivaldi's Four Seasons stands as one of the most beloved and iconic compositions in the Baroque repertoire. Composed in 1723, this masterful work consists of four violin concertos, each representing a different season of the year: Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter. Vivaldi's evocative and vivid musical depiction of nature's changing landscapes and the experiences associated with each season has captivated audiences for centuries.

In each concerto, Vivaldi skillfully weaves together musical elements that emulate the sights, sounds, and emotions of the corresponding season. From the energetic and joyful melodies of Spring to the dramatic and stormy passages of Winter, Vivaldi's ingenuity in capturing the essence of each season is undeniable.

The Four Seasons follows a distinct three-movement structure, typical of the concerto form during the Baroque period. Each concerto is further divided into three sections, corresponding to the individual movements: fast-slow-fast. Through virtuosic solo passages, vibrant orchestral accompaniment, and intricate musical imagery, Vivaldi's Four Seasons takes listeners on a captivating journey through the year's cycles.

This performance of the Four Seasons features our talented musicians, who work under the patronage of Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana, along with our scholarship recipients, curated and led by Yada Lee. Together, they bring their exceptional skills and artistry to breathe new life into Vivaldi's timeless masterpiece, offering a fresh interpretation and captivating the audience with their passion and musicality. To enhance the experience, we are delighted to feature visual interpretations inspired by the sonnet that Vivaldi wrote, bringing a visual dimension to the performance, crafted by the talented artist Theerawat Klangjareonchai, adding a unique and immersive element to this unforgettable musical experience.

BEETHOVEN

PIANO TRIO CYCLE PART 1

The award winning Linos Piano Trio, led by Prach Boondiskulchok who was one of the first recipients of Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana, presents a cycle of Ludwig van Beethoven Piano Trio which will be divided into two parts. In this concert, we explore three remarkable piano trios by Beethoven, each showcasing the composer's genius and his revolutionary approach to the genre.

The Trio in E-flat major for Violin, Cello, and Piano, Opus 1, No. 1. is a testament to Beethoven's early explorations in the piano trio form and serves as a prelude to his groundbreaking contributions to the genre. Composed during his early years in Vienna, the E-flat major Trio holds a position of importance within the set of three Opus 1 Trios. It is believed to be the first of the three to be composed, and its placement as the first in the printed edition of 1795 suggests its significance. The work received high praise during its premiere, attended by notable figures such as Franz Joseph Haydn. It demonstrates Beethoven's adeptness in constructing a solid sonata-allegro structure while also introducing hints of his unique musical voice. From the expressive first movement to the playful Scherzo and the genial finale, this trio offers a glimpse into Beethoven's early artistic development and foreshadows the greatness to come.

Next on the program is Beethoven's Piano Trio in D Major, Opus 70, No. 1, famously known as the "Ghost" Trio. This trio derives its nickname from the eerie and haunting second movement, the Largo assai. Some speculate that Beethoven was inspired by Shakespeare's Macbeth when composing this movement. The sustained three-note motif and the mournful piano response create a sense of foreboding and supernatural atmosphere. The outer movements, in contrast, are more direct and lively, showcasing Beethoven's innovative and distinct style. The "Ghost" Trio is a prime example of Beethoven's middle period, characterized by heightened intensity, innovation, and a departure from Classical norms. It stands as a testament to Beethoven's ability to push the boundaries of musical expression and captivate audiences with his profound emotional depth.

Concluding this part of the cycle is Beethoven's Piano Trio in E-flat major, Opus 70, No. 2. This trio exudes a sense of intimacy and charm, reminiscent of Beethoven's contemporaneous Cello Sonata in A major, Op. 69. The work features a delicately introspective slow introduction that seamlessly leads into the lively Allegro. Beethoven showcases his compositional mastery through unexpected harmonic shifts and witty musical gestures. The second movement, a set of double variations, exhibits similarities to Haydn's approach in his "Drumroll" Symphony, further highlighting Beethoven's engagement with his musical predecessors. The E-flat major Trio showcases Beethoven's ability to seamlessly integrate diverse musical elements into a cohesive and captivating whole.

These works, composed during different stages of Beethoven's career, offer a glimpse into the evolution of his musical language and his profound impact on the chamber music genre. Prepare to be moved, inspired, and astonished by the timeless brilliance of Ludwig van Beethoven.

UNEARTHING HIDDEN GEMS: MUSIC FOR OBOE, VIOLIN, VIOLA, AND PIANO

The International Artist Series, in collaboration with the University of Iowa School of Music, explores the remarkable works of composers Hans Gál, Sam Wu, and David Gompper, taking the audience on a journey through captivating melodies and expressive musical landscapes as we unearth these hidden gems in the chamber music repertoire.

The program begins with Hans Gál's Suite for Viola and Piano, Opus 102a. Dating from 1949, this suite showcases Gál's deep understanding and affinity for the viola. Originally composed for viola and orchestra, this revised version comprises four character pieces inspired by Schumann's Märchenbilder. Gál's poignant compositions reflect his personal journey, as he wrote extensively for the viola during his refuge in Edinburgh after fleeing Austria due to the rise of the Nazis.

Next, we encounter Sam Wu's Glass Terminals for Oboe and Piano. Wu's music embraces the beauty found in blurred boundaries, often incorporating extra-musical themes such as architecture, urban planning, climate science, and the search for extraterrestrial life. With numerous accolades to his name, including recognition from the American Composers Orchestra and the Tasmanian Symphony, Sam Wu's compositions resonate globally, transcending cultural barriers and captivating audiences worldwide.

David Gompper's Star of County Down for Violin and Piano is a fantasia, a genre that has a rich heritage of its own. The principal melody is present virtually from the initial to the final measures, and the rhythmic vamping and contrapuntal interplay between violin and piano in the opening strain is but a harbinger of things to come. The two instruments continually trade off portions of the melody and do so in a manner reminiscent of protracted figure/ground exchanges..

During August 1940, in Edinburgh, Hans Gál composed the piece "Impromptu" specifically for his 15-year-old son, Peter. At the time, Peter had been studying the violin and expressed a desire to explore the viola in order to participate in a youth orchestra. As a result, "Impromptu" was crafted to be accessible for beginners, featuring straightforward and approachable musical elements. The composition's Romantic harmonies, accompanied by an equally effortless piano part, create a pleasing and harmonious duet that can be enjoyed and performed by musicians at various skill levels.

The concert concludes with Hans Gál's Trio for Oboe, Violin, and Viola, Op. 94. Written during Gál's prolific years, this work exemplifies his craftsmanship and ability to create musical dialogues within a chamber ensemble. The trio combines the distinctive voices of the oboe, violin, and viola, intertwining their melodies in a rich tapestry of sound.

BEETHOVEN PIANO TRIO CYCLE PART 2

In the final part of the Beethoven Piano Trio Cycle, we are treated to a triumphant culmination of Beethoven's mastery and innovation in the genre. The program begins with the powerful Piano Trio in C Minor, Op. 1, No. 3, composed in 1795, followed by the enchanting Piano Trio in G Major, Op. 1, No. 2, composed between 1792 and 1794. The majestic Piano Trio in B-flat Major, Op. 97, known as the "Archduke" Trio will conclude the cycle.

Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Trio in C minor, Op. 1, No. 3, introduced the composer to the musical public and showcased his craftsmanship in 1795. While adhering to the Classical mold inherited from Haydn and Mozart, Beethoven added his distinct touch by expanding the emotional range, introducing a scherzo or minuet, and emancipating the cello. The third trio stands out as the most advanced, featuring a dramatic opening, a theme and variations movement, an unconventional minuet, and a passionate finale. Through these trios, Beethoven strategically established his presence, attracting patrons and demonstrating his unique artistic voice that would revolutionize classical music.

The Piano Trio in G Major, Op. 1, No. 2, composed between 1792 and 1794, exhibits Beethoven's exploration of the piano trio form during his early Viennese years. Often referred to as the "Gassenhauer" Trio, it is characterized by its catchy melodies and lively character. The opening movement introduces a cheerful and memorable theme that is skillfully passed between the instruments, showcasing Beethoven's adeptness at interplay and virtuosity. The second movement, a heartfelt Largo, allows for introspection and showcases the composer's ability to convey profound emotion. The unexpected Rondo finale, filled with variations on a popular theme from Joseph Weigl's opera "L'amor marinaro," brings the trio to a joyous and spirited conclusion. The Piano Trio in G Major exemplifies Beethoven's gift for blending brilliance and beauty in his compositions.

At the pinnacle of Beethoven's piano trio output stands the magnificent Piano Trio in B-flat Major, Op. 97, known as the "Archduke" Trio. Composed in 1811, this monumental work represents Beethoven's mature and expansive style. Dedicated to his patron and friend, Archduke Rudolph of Austria, the trio unfolds with a sense of grandeur and profundity. The first movement presents a majestic and noble theme, leading to a richly developed musical landscape. The second movement showcases a tender and intimate dialogue between the instruments, demonstrating Beethoven's ability to convey deep emotional depth. A spirited and exuberant Scherzo follows, filled with rhythmic vitality and lively interplay. The trio culminates in a radiant and triumphant Finale, brimming with energy and joy. With its sublime melodies and intricate counterpoint, the "Archduke" Trio stands as one of the pinnacles of the piano trio repertoire, solidifying Beethoven's legacy as a trailblazer in classical music.

“ I wish you all to realize that the prize is a part of the reward gained from a competition, but the real reward you receive is the knowledge, experience, and skills that are of great value. I hope it will continue to be used to benefit society and the nation. ”

Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana (given on 9 December 2002)

As part of the festival’s objective to realize Her Royal Highness’ vision in promoting classical music to Thai society, the competitions aim to explore possibilities for making classical music sustainable for the current and future contexts in Thailand. In order to create a path for the future of classical music in Thailand, one might wonder what help might it need.

Classical music and its musicians in Thailand have been struggling long before the current pandemic begins. From not getting enough support or being seen as a genre requiring a deeper understanding with strict concert etiquette, the demand for classical music is not enough to support Thai classical musicians where many of them had sadly changed their careers. At the same time, classical musicians are only trained to perfect their performing skills which might not be enough for the fast-changing world.

To fulfill the goals, PGMF initiated two competitions which began in 2020; Call for Artists Competition and Business Model Competition.

The Call for Artists Competition (formerly known as Performance and Promotion Competition) is a platform for the next generation of classical musicians to showcase their artistry through creative performance as well as to raise their awareness in project writing, public relations, and creating a fanbase.

The Business Model Competition is a platform for finding business models that can make classical music in Thailand accessible and sustainable. This competition recognizes the importance of making classical music a viable and sustainable industry in Thailand, and seeks to find innovative solutions to these challenges.
