“On ne peut atteindre ni à l'art ni à la sagesse si l’on ne s’est pas adonné à leur étude”

(One cannot attain art of wisdom if one has not devoted oneself to their study)

a quote by Democritus, was one of Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana Krom Luang Naradhiwas Rajanagarindra's favourite quotes, which summarizes who she was.

Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana Krom Luang Naradhiwas Rajanagarindra passed away in 2008, leaving behind a legacy that is still strongly felt in Thai society. Her lifelong learning philosophy focused on promoting education, social work, healthcare, liberal arts, and cultural activities. Her love of classical music was also evident, as she became Thailand's greatest supporter of classical music development.

Born in London on May 6, 1923, Princess Galyani Vadhana was the elder sister of two late kings of Thailand, King Ananthamahidon Phra Atthamaramathibodin and King Bhumibol the Great. She was exposed to classical music at a young age, which led to her deep understanding of the art form.

Her Royal Highness attended classical music performances to support classical musicians and organizations when she was able. In 2000, she donated her personal budget to support music learning for youth, which later became the Fund for Classical Music Promotion Under the Patronage of HRH Princess Galyani Vadhana. This funding has been instrumental in developing young Thai classical musicians who play important roles in raising the standard of Thai classical music today.

The Princess Galyani Vadhana Institute of Music was established to continue Her Royal Highness’ vision of promoting classical music and making it sustainable in the Thai context, as well as to pay tribute to her lifelong dedication to the arts and education.

In 2022, Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana was honored by UNESCO as one of the most distinguished and influential people in the world, on the occasion of her 100th anniversary. She was recognized for her lifelong dedication to the arts and education, as well as her contribution to the development of classical music in Thailand. The Princess was also a strong advocate for social work, healthcare, and cultural activities, and her legacy continues to inspire the Thai people today.

PRINCESS GALYANI VADHANA INTERNATIONAL MUSIC FESTIVAL 2024

The Princess Galyani Vadhana International Music Festival (PGMF) was inaugurated in 2020 by the Princess Galyani Vadhana Institute of Music, embodying the motto "A Festival of Musical Celebration, Promoting New Generations, and Creating Sustainable Society." Its first edition, themed 'Classical Music Next Normal', aptly captured the challenges that classical musicians have faced during the COVID-19 pandemic and will continue to encounter in the post-pandemic era. Beyond being a platform to celebrate the beauty and power of classical music, the festival aims to inspire and support musicians as they navigate the new normal.

Among the highlights of the PGMF are the Residence Artist Performances, which not only entertain but also serve as a wellspring of inspiration for the Thai audience and the emerging generation of classical musicians. The festival also features the Call for Artists Competition, now known as the Performance and Promotion Competition, providing a platform for young classical musicians to showcase their artistry through creative performances while honing skills in project writing, public relations, and cultivating a fanbase.

In addition to the captivating performances, the PGMF hosts the "Business Model Pitching Competition" as part of its commitment to finding sustainable approaches that make classical music accessible in Thailand. Recognizing the significance of establishing a viable and sustainable classical music industry, this competition seeks innovative solutions to address these challenges and create a flourishing environment for classical music in the country. By integrating musical celebration, nurturing new generations, and fostering a sustainable society, the PGMF embodies the ethos of its motto, enriching the cultural landscape of Thailand.

The festival logo, inaugurated in 2021, is inspired by the iconic Rama VIII bridge, where Princess Galyani Vadhana Institute of Music is located, the hidden G-clef within the institute logo, and by Saeng Neung Kue Rung Ngam (

), a song about Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana. The song compares the princess to an invisible light that brings out the hidden goodness and the beauty when reflected upon. Thus, the logo represents the festival’s aim, to be a place to support classical music and to be a platform to showcase the talents of the next generation musicians.

BAROQUE EVENING

The PGMF2024 opening concert invites audiences to rediscover both rarely heard Baroque gems and the ever-evolving conversation between past and present, explored through three

The first topic delves into the vibrant world of Baroque music, with a focus on pieces that are seldom performed in Thailand. We begin with a trio sonata by the master himself, Johann Sebastian Bach, showcasing his genius for weaving together independent melodic lines. Next, we encounter a work by Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber, a contemporary of Bach known for his innovative violin techniques. His "Mystery (Rosary) Sonata" is a deeply personal work, each movement reflecting a different aspect of the rosary prayer. Finally, we cross the English Channel to France with François Couperin's "La Françoise," a delightful suite that captures the essence of the French Baroque style.

The program takes a turn towards the early Romantic period with Franz Schubert's Lieder (German for "songs"). Lieder occupy a unique space in the musical landscape, offering intimate settings for poems that explore a wide range of emotions. This selection will delve into the complex themes of gender identity as expressed through Schubert's masterful compositions.

Our journey concludes with a return to the Baroque era, but with a twist. We will experience the art of improvisation, a cornerstone of Baroque performance practice.

Hey there! I'm SOUPY, that's Sound Of UPcYcled, your reminder that music can come from some pretty unexpected places!

We're all about taking those plastic bottles, containers, and whatever else you might toss out, and turning them into instruments that make some seriously cool sounds.

Listen, I know plastic is everywhere, but what if we could reduce how much we use and then upcycle the rest into something awesome? That's the SOUPY way! So, next time you reach for a plastic bottle, think twice – you might just be holding your next musical masterpiece!

UPCYCLE MUSIC

Inspired by the growing problem of plastic pollution in our oceans, this concert premieres new works by composers Richard Bissill and Komsun Dilokkunanant,, a program where ordinary plastic bottles are reborn as instruments of artistic expression. The performance blends traditional instruments like horns and piano with an instrument crafted from recycled plastic bottles.

To deepen your experience, an installation by Kansiree Chirawattanaphan will visually transport you beneath the waves, creating a captivating interplay between sight and sound. Upcycle Music traces a narrative – the once vibrant sea, the growing threat of pollution, and a plea for restoration.

This unique and thought-provoking evening promises to be a powerful call to action. Witness the transformation of waste into something beautiful, raise awareness about plastic pollution, and celebrate the boundless creativity of music.

This performance is supported by the British Council's Connections Through Culture grant.

CELEBRATING SUSTAINABILITY

CLASSIC JEEB HUNGARY

Presented by the Jeeb Ensemble, "Classic Jeeb" is a series that embodies the spirit of bridging the gap between classical music and exciting new influences. Tonight, this bridge leads us to the vibrant heart of Hungary.

The program opens with Franz Joseph Haydn's String Quartet in D minor, Op. 76, No. 2, nicknamed "Quinten." Composed in the 1790s, it belongs to a set of eight quartets that Haydn wrote after his successful visits to London. These quartets marked Haydn's final word on the string quartet form and are considered to be among his greatest chamber music works.

Haydn, a renowned composer, wrote this quartet as part of a set commissioned by a Hungarian aristocrat, Count Erdödy. The piece showcases Haydn's innovative use of musical materials, but the program note highlights the finale's elements that might hint at Hungarian folk music.

These potential Hungarian influences include the use of syncopation, a rhythmic technique, and sustained harmonies. While the connection isn't definitive, it suggests Haydn's openness to incorporating new musical styles, possibly inspired by his association with the Hungarian count. Following this, we delve into the world of Hungarian composer Carl Goldmark with his Piano Quintet No. 1 in B-flat major, Op. 30. Goldmark, renowned for his masterful blend of Hungarian folk idioms with established Romantic forms, creates a work brimming with passion, lyricism, and a touch of Hungarian flair.

His First Piano Quintet, composed in 1879, exemplifies this fusion. The opening movement sets a sunny and optimistic tone, while the second movement features a gorgeous cello melody showcasing the Romantic style. The scherzo offers a stark contrast with its pounding rhythm, and the finale returns to the playful mood of the beginning.

"Classic Jeeb Hungary'' invites you on a journey to reimagine the present through the lens of these captivating pieces. This innovative approach celebrates the rich musical heritage shared by Austria and Hungary, while simultaneously challenging traditional perceptions of classical music. As the Jeeb Ensemble “courts'' Hungarian influences, they provide ways for a more inclusive and engaging future for classical music, communicating with audiences of all ages and backgrounds.

SCHOENBERG AT 150

The final concert of PGMF2024 program celebrates the 150th anniversary of Arnold Schoenberg's birth by exploring the concept of "continuing the past to future" in music.

The evening opens with a rarely performed chamber work by Gustav Mahler, a late-Romantic giant who recognized Schoenberg's talent and deeply influenced Schoenberg's early development. Mahler's influence becomes a bridge, connecting the established traditions of the past to the innovative sounds Schoenberg would later pioneer. composed at 16, the Piano Quartet in A minor showcases his early talent. Though unfinished, the piece reveals mastery in melody, harmony, and emotional expression. A minor tonality casts a dark, dramatic mood, a hallmark of Mahler's later symphonies. The piano plays a central role, establishing the melancholic tone and driving intensity – elements that would become characteristic of his mature work. While influenced by Brahms and Schumann, Mahler's individuality shines through. This daringly beautiful piece is particularly significant as his only surviving chamber work without vocals.

Following Mahler's exploration of Romanticism's expressive potential, the program delves into the world of Anton Webern, a student of Schoenberg and a key figure in the Second Viennese School. Webern's three compositions – the Piano Quintet, Langsamer Satz, and Four Pieces for Violin and Piano – showcase his distinct approach, characterized by brevity, intricate textures, and a focus on individual notes. The Piano Quintet, composed in 1907, reflects Webern's early development with hints of Romanticism and Schoenberg's influence, while foreshadowing his later experiments with atonality. The Langsamer Satz, a standalone movement for string quartet, explores "Klangfarbenmelodie" (tone color melody), where instruments share the melodic line, creating a shimmering soundscape. Finally, the Four Pieces for Violin and Piano represent Webern's embrace of atonality, offering a glimpse into his aphoristic and highly concentrated musical statements. These three works by Webern demonstrate the evolution of musical language from Mahler's late Romanticism to the beginnings of atonality,

18

The final two repertoires focus on Schoenberg himself. Composed in 1949, his "Phantasy" for violin and piano prioritizes the melody of the violin. Despite its atonal foundation, the piece retains glimpses of traditional major/minor tonality and a single-movement sonata structure. Influenced by classical and neo-classical styles, the work features virtuosic writing and a variety of techniques like double-stopping and tremolos. This shift towards a more expressive and lyrical style hints at yet another evolution of Schoenberg's musical language.

The program concludes with a different kind of work from Schoenberg's earlier years. Though superficially resembling a standard march with its dotted rhythms and trills, Schoenberg's "Die Eiserne Brigade," composed during his military service, holds a unique place in his compositional journey. This seemingly straightforward march is laced with humor and subversion. The inclusion of an "animal concert" with musicians mimicking animal sounds, and the fragmented melody that resists forming a cohesive whole, create a sense of playful mockery. Despite these comedic elements, the march retains a catchy trio section and hints of traditional harmony, suggesting a layer of respect for the genre it parodies. Scholars believe the melody fragments might even reference folk songs familiar to the soldiers, adding another layer of playful interaction with established musical forms. "Die Eiserne Brigade" thus becomes significant for showcasing Schoenberg's early experimentation with humor and unconventional elements in composition. It reflects his evolving relationship with traditional forms like the march, where parody coexists with a subtle nod to the genre's conventions. This playful work offers a window into Schoenberg's personality beyond the seriousness associated with his later atonal compositions. This playful work offers a window into Schoenberg's personality beyond the seriousness associated with his later atonal compositions.

This program offers a unique opportunity to experience the lineage of atonal music, from its roots in the past to its lasting impact on the future.

COMPETITION

“ I wish you all to realize that the prize is a part of the reward gained from a competition, but the real reward you receive is the knowledge, experience, and skills that are of great value. I hope it will continue to be used to benefit society and the nation.”

Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana (given on 9 December 2002)

As part of the festival’s objective to realize Her Royal Highness’ vision in promoting classical music to Thai society, the competitions aim to explore possibilities for making classical music sustainable for the current and future contexts in Thailand. In order to create a path for the future of classical music in Thailand, one might wonder what help might it need.

Classical music and its musicians in Thailand have been struggling long before the current pandemic begins. From not getting enough support or being seen as a genre requiring a deeper understanding with strict concert etiquette, the demand for classical music is not enough to support Thai classical musicians where many of them had sadly changed their careers. At the same time, classical musicians are only trained to perfect their performing skills which might not be enough for the fast-changing world.

To fulfill the goals, PGMF initiated two competitions which began in 2020; Call for Artists Competition and Business Model Competition.

The Call for Artists Competition (formerly known as Performance and Promotion Competition) is a platform for the next generation of classical musicians to showcase their artistry through creative performance as well as to raise their awareness in project writing, public relations, and creating a fanbase.

The Business Model Competition is a platform for finding business models that can make classical music in Thailand accessible and sustainable. This competition recognizes the importance of making classical music a viable and sustainable industry in Thailand, and seeks to find innovative solutions to these challenges.

“THE ATMOSPHERE LAYERS”

Satursday 25 May 2024, 6:00 pm

"The Atmosphere Layers" is a musical composition inspired by Earth's five atmospheric layers. These layers serve as a metaphor for the changing conditions of our planet. The piece is divided into three movements, each presenting soundscapes that evoke the ambient sounds of a specific atmospheric layer. A recurring piano melody acts as a unifying thread throughout the movements. Additional instrumentation includes Thai instruments, electronic sounds from a modular synthesizer, and even everyday objects repurposed for sound creation through digital processing.

This unconventional approach aims to highlight the beauty often overlooked in the world around us. By transforming noise and forgotten objects into music, the performance encourages us to re-evaluate the value of things we might otherwise discard. It promotes resourcefulness and inspires us to see the potential for music in unexpected places.

To achieve the above goal, the competition aims to find business models that can make classical music in Thailand accessible and sustainable. This competition recognizes the importance of making classical music a viable and sustainable industry in Thailand, and seeks to find innovative solutions to these challenges.

For its anniversary, the business model competition inaugurates Business Model Competition Academy for Classical Music with an intensive three-day of problem finding and look for constructive and creative solutions on the theme of "Music, Innovation, & Sustainability." Interested participants can apply, individually or as a team, for the academy without any fee from PGMF Facebook page where the selected candidate will earn a chance to win an Open Innovation fund of 60,000 Baht.
