We want to say THANK YOU to all of our members for your patience while the fuel tanks and new dispensers were being installed. It was a long and grueling process but we are pleased to say that we have finished all certifications and we are waiting for the final green light!

The privacy gates are almost finished. We will send an email out to explain how the system will work and what to do if you have guests.

Dueling Pianos is always a sell out and it is back again June the 23rd. It is a fun night for the members. This event books early, so call to make your reservations as you won't want to miss out.

CHEF'S CORNER

Octopus a' la gallega

Serves: 5-8 People

Directions

1. The day before, remove the octopus from the freezer and allow it to defrost in the fridge. Before cooking, it is important to clear the head, remove the eyes and mouth and wash the octopus well.

Ingredients

• 1 whole fresh or frozen octopus, about 6lb in weight

• 1lb of red potatoes peeled

• Sea salt flakes

• Spanish smoked paprika

• Extra virgin olive oil

2. Bring a large pot of water to the boil with a pinch of salt. When the water begins to boil you need to grab the octopus from the head and ‘scare it’ by dipping it in the water 3 times and pulling it out. This makes the octopus stiffen, so the skin does not fall during the cooking process and makes the tips of the tentacles curl. The tentacles are preferred over the head, which sometimes is discarded. Cook your octopus between an hour and an hour and 15 minutes on a medium heat. Make sure the octopus is covered with water throughout the cooking. Towards the end of the cooking process, you can check if the octopus is ready by piercing the thicker tentacles with a wooden skewer to check if they are tender enough. Octopus should be al dente, just like pasta. You should feel the same resistance as a cooked potato. Once the cooking time is complete, allow the octopus to rest in the cooking liquid for a few minutes and drain onto a serving platter.

3. Whilst you cooking the octopus, add the potatoes and cook until soft. Allow them to cool down slightly.

4. To serve the dish, cut the octopus tentacles and potatoes into ½ an inch-thick slices. Pulpo a la gallega is traditionally served on a wooden plate with a base of sliced potatoes, topped with slices of octopus. Season with sea salt, smoked paprika and a good drizzle of quality extra virgin olive oil.

What is Electric Shock Drowning?

Electric Shock Drowning (ESD) is the result of the passage of a typically low-level AC current through the body with sufficient force to cause skeletal muscular paralysis, rendering the victim unable to help himself / herself, while immersed in fresh water, eventually resulting in drowning of the victim. www.electricshockdrowning.org

Typical Behaviors Exhibited By Victims ESD Or Drowning | BoatUS

Drowning ESD Electrocution

Source: WebMD.com, interviews with ESD witnesses

Victim cannot speak or shout Victim will feel tingling, numbness, pain, paralysis

Reflexive "ladder climbing"

Victim may be able to scream once

Initially, victim may be able to shout Sudden cessation of all activity

Looks "playful" Looks distressed and not playful If wearing flotation, may roll on back with face out of the water and be unresponsive

Lasts 60 seconds with an adult and as little as 20 seconds with a child

May turn into drowning behavior once victim begins to get water in lungs

What Should You Do?

If not wearing flotation, will likely roll onto face

No matter what is causing the problem, don't jump into the water to try to save the victim. Only professionally trained lifeguards can deal with a drowning person without putting themselves in danger. And if the problem is ESD, going into the water could kill you. In either situation, call 911. Then you should "reach, throw, row, but don't go." Use an oar or boathook to pull the victim to you, throw flotation to the victim if he or she is still responsive, or get into a boat and try to reach the person from there. Once you have retrieved the victim, check for a heartbeat. If you cannot detect one, use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) if one is available. Make sure the victim's chest is dry first. Maintain CPR until emergency personnel arrive.

Please remember Safe Harbor Peninsula Yacht Club does not allow any swimming in the marina… ESD (electric shock drowning) is real and cannot be taken lightly. When someone drowns it’s too late!

The Watkins

Here we have Vince and Ann Watkins. Two delightful members who have been members of ours for a little over ten years. What started it all was when they were moving out of their condo, and needed to find a new place to keep their boat. Little did they know, they were about to find their new SHPYC family.

Since joining, the Watkins have been heavily involved. Vince was our Commodore in the infamous times of 2020. Despite the troubled year, Vince and his Fleet Committee team were still able to put on all major events such as the Poker Run & Pen Cup.

In addition to the hard work they have put into the club, they are no strangers to the enjoyment the club brings to its members day in & day out. When asked what their favorite event is, their response was The Poker Run and Commodore's Hours. Vince went on to say that, "you almost always meet someone new" when at the Commodore's Hours. Feeling like you are a part of a family-like community is an important initiative of The Safe Harbor Peninsula Yacht Club. Ann agreed by saying, "there are things here for everyone in the family." This is helpful when you have 12 grandchildren like the Watkins. They enjoy brining the whole family in to enjoy the club and it's amenities. One of their favorites is, of course, the pool and the new Outrigger Bar & Grill.

Thank you to Vince & Ann for sitting down to talk with us about your club experiences. We look forward to another amazing ten years with you and your family!

The Safe Harbor Peninsula Yacht Club

FAMILY

SHPYC Dogs of the Month

Romeo is a 2.5lb five month old bundle of joy who belongs to Susan & Edgar Brewer. When the Brewers brought him home, they said he started off pretty shy. It didn't take long though before he got comfortable and is now the life of the houosehold! The Brewer house is also home to his 16 year old cat sibling, Izzy, "whom he teases and jumps around like a little goat!," says Ms. Brewer.

As for his choice of exercise, Romeo has three stairs that provides the perfect height for a fur ball dive into his fluffy bed. He'll go for hours especially if there is a toy to pounce on! Other activities that keep him moving are running through tunnels in the house; and chasing Dad in the yard just as fast as his little legs can go. They say, "We see through his eyes 'What a Wonderful World' it truly is." He loves the Safe Harbor Peninsula Yacht Club team and is looking forward to his first Lake Norman sailing expedition!

Do you have a fur baby that loves the spotlight? Send us a message! They just may be our next Dog of the Month!

FLEET COMMITTEE NEWS

CAPTAIN

Ah, June! It’s a beautiful month on Lake Norman with plenty of sunshine and the water on the lake in the pool is finally warm enough to enjoy! Speaking of enjoyment, this month brings the 25th anniversary of the Poker Run. Just like the hydrangeas that are back this time each year with new blooms, the Poker Run is back with both familiarity and fresh ways to win!

The silver anniversary edition of the Poker Run is the headline event of a huge weekend of fun at SHPYC. The entertainment kicks off on Friday night, June 23rd with Dueling Pianos and a Silent Auction. 100% of the proceeds from the Silent Auction support our three charities: Davidson-Cornelius Child Development Center, Levine & Dickson Hospice House, and the Calvin Newman Youth Boating Education Fund Everyone who attends on Friday evening receives a free chip for Saturday night.

During the day on Saturday, it’s time to slip out of the marina and gather playing cards on the lake. To play in the Poker Run, you will buy hands between now and noon on June 24th. To play, take your boat or ride on the free shuttles to each of five stops on the lake. At each location you’ll receive a sealed envelope with a playing card. Once you’ve been to all five stops, return to SHPYC to play out your hands with the dealers.

SAILING SCENE Let’s go sailing!

The Lake Norman Sailing season, while yearround, is really ramping up for 2023 as the weather warms. The Wednesday Night Series is 1/3 complete. Commissioning is now behind us. And new events await us!

The Sail Fleet is continually looking for ways to engage our sailors with new and innovative events. Be on the lookout in the SHPYC Happenings newsletter for the Crew Party, Social Sails, Sailboat Maintenance (springs and pawls anyone?) and Education in the coming months.

Also, the USGC Auxiliary is performing Vessel Safety Checks on June 10, July 8, and August 12. I highly

The three best hands of the day win big! Everyone who attends on Friday evening receives a free chip for Saturday night.

So, what should you do with the chips you collected? Take them to Chips for Charity, an all new Saturday evening event! All members and guests receive free chips when checking in at registration (except the kids who will enjoy free child-care). The action at the game tables, 50-50 raffle, and silent auction conclusion will keep the party hopping and our charities in the money.

What a weekend and what a month! To fully enjoy all that it has to offer, I leave you with a few additional thoughts. First, it’s a great month for kids too with the Parent-Child Fishing Event on the banks of SHPYC on June 17th. Second, whether it’s the Poker Run or just for fun, I recommend that every boat has two people aboard who can operate it safely in case the primary operator becomes incapacitated. And finally, the Power Boater of the Year is heating up. The more you participate in power boating events at SHPYC, the more points you can earn across the year-long competition. Reach out to shpycfleet@ gmail.com for details.

Together we can make Lake Norman a great place to live; one boat, one chip, and one charity at a time.

encourage boat owners to take advantage of this nocharge safety service. Sign up is through the SHPYC event calendar registration link.

Lastly, please join us for the Chips for Charity event in June! This new event directly supports our three local charities.

To fair winds and following seas,
