Just because you winterized, doesn’t mean you ’ re good to go till spring. You certainly made the right decision, but it doesn’t stop there! A lot can happen during those slow 4-5 months when you may not use your boat as much or not at all. Whether you have a bilge heater or have chosen to winterize, you still need to check your boat.
Here are a few things to remember during the winter months:
1. Physically board the boat and visually inspect the bilge, or any compartments that could collect water.
2. Ensure the boat has power for bilge heaters, battery chargers, cabin heat, etc
3. Remember, no light bulbs or any unapproved heating source!!
4. Unless wired into the boat's main panel and is circuit breaker protected, make sure anything that is plugged in that requires less than 30amps has an inline GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter)
5. Do not overload power cords.
6. Empty water from covers and make sure poles are up and the cover is tight.
7. If bilge heaters have been installed, test them periodically. Do not assume anything!
8. Call and schedule a shore power cord inspection. You never know the condition of the cord under the dock. Note any discoloration/burn marks.
9. Do not disconnect batteries. This is your source of power for your bilge pump.
10. Ensure your float switch is operational so the automatic bilge pump will engage.
11. Do not pull the plug from your boat if on a lift. If lift malfunctions for whatever reason and goes down so will your boat!
For any assistance, please call or email your marina team!
Make sure all power cords that are plugged into the pedestal are protected by a “circuit breaker” and are marine-grade for outdoor use. Dockside adapters with GFCI and power cords can be purchased at the ship’s store.

I d my heartfelt thanks to our Members, the Fleet Committee, Kathee, Nikole, and the entire Management Team for the privilege of serving as your 2025 Fleet Committee Commodore. This year’s theme, Members Matter Most, guided everything we did, and I truly hope each of you felt that commitment in the experiences we helped Safe Harbor Peninsula Yacht Club deliver. The Fleet Committee works hand-in-hand with Club Management and Staff to plan and host a wide range of events. This year, those included: Polar Plunge benefiting Special Olympics
Commodores Ball
Sailing Regattas and Sail Crew Party
Car and Boat Show
CPR Training and Safety Events
Raft-Ups
Lake History Tour
Pancake Breakfast for the Members Fleet Commissioning
Speakeasy for a Cause & Silent Auction supporting three local charities
Poker Run
Pirate Treasure Hunt
Pen Cup Regatta
Operation Christmas Child
Puppy Plunge benefiting the local animal shelter
Your Fleet Committee is made up of an exceptional group of dedicated volunteers, and I am truly honored to serve alongside them each one a dear friend. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: we are all incredibly fortunate to have the leadership of Kathee and Nikole, along with their outstanding team. Their tireless work ensures that our Club continues to be a wonderful place to gather, enjoy, and call home.
A sincere THANK YOU to the many volunteers who made this year’s events possible. I’m thrilled that several of you will be joining us on the 2026 Fleet Committee! If you’d like to get more involved and meet new people, we would love to have you join us by volunteering at an event.
Please join me in congratulating Tim Harbick as your new Commodore! Tim already has exciting plans underway to make 2026 an exceptional year.
Wishing you all a wonderful holiday season, Pamela Black
2025 Commodore
As the temperatures drop and the crowds thin, some of the best sailing of the year arrives on Lake Norman. Fall and early winter often bring steady, lively winds that make for fantastic afternoons on the water, especially if your boat isn’t yet hauled out or winterized. The cool air and crisp breezes can provide the kind of sailing that reminds us why we love the sport in the first place.
For those keeping their boats in the water, there’s another great reason to stay rigged and ready: the annual Lake Norman
Lighted Boat Parade. Sailboats have a unique edge in the decorating department. With tall masts and standing rigging already in place, it’s easy to create stunning vertical light displays that stand out beautifully against the night sky. Where powerboats stack lights outward, sailors get to build upward, and the results can be spectacular. This year’s parade will be held on Saturday, December 20, 2025, from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM, and we’d love to see plenty of sails— well, lights—on the horizon. Whether you plan to participate or just watch from shore, it’s one of the most festive and sparkling evenings of the season at the club.
Fair winds and happy decorating!

The Fleet Committee is a dedicated group of volunteer members who collaborate with club management to host a variety of events for our members. Some of these events also support local charities by raising funds. The Social Scene offers a fun and easy way to get involved with both the club and the Fleet Committee. It’s a great opportunity to share fresh ideas, meet new people, and volunteer for upcoming events!
The Fleet Committee is a group of volunteer members who work in partnership with the Safe Harbor Peninsula Yacht Club management. Next Meeting: Saturday, December 6th
The Social Committee is the perfect opportunity to get involved in club events and meet other members!
