WATCH THE July 2024

GENERAL MANAGER MESSAGE
Dear Members,
It is time to get ready to utilize our parking lot gate access. Thank you for your patience with this while we also repaved the parking lot.
The gate access is finished and we will begin handing out the access tags beginning July 15th. (Please remember the club is closed on Tuesdays).
We will begin closing the gates at the end of September, which gives our members ample time to pick up your tags. Please see below as there are different kinds of access tags for you to decide upon. The tags are for those who are on your membership and have a valid license and car registration. When you come to get your tag, please bring your registration with you.
At the present time your guests will need to park on the circle, street, or stop in at the front desk to receive a temporary visitor pass.
*When we have big events we will keep the gates open and Gina Cook, our security person, will monitor. If you have any questions, please feel free to call me! Phone: (704)892-9858
As always, we look forward to serving you.
Kathee Dishner General Manager

BOATING & MARINA NEWS
BY: HARRY SMITH - MARINA MANAGER
Shore power in the marina

As the busy boating seasons continues, there is a lot of activity in and around the marina.
Most of our boats here have the capability of hooking up to shore power. With these hookups, there are lots of cords being run to the boats, therefore sometimes droop or hang in the water. When this takes place there is the potential of stray current to be admitted into the water. This can be bad for a number of reasons!
• ESD is one major concern, which is why we DO NOT allow swimming in the marina. Electric Shock Drowning can occur when swimming around any dock that carries electricity. Drowning occurs when the muscles seize up, basically paralyzing you to where you cannot stay afloat any longer.
• Electrolysis also can occur when stray current is in water, which can cause corrosion to metals on your boat.
Please help prevent this from happening.
1. Keep cords ran properly and out of the water.
2. Always use marine approved power cords.
3. If you see a cord in the water, PLEASE LET THE MARINA TEAM KNOW!
4. Inspect your cords regularly. Make sure all breakers are off when you conduct an inspection.
5. When you leave the dock make sure power is off.
6. Replace cords when needed, cords do not last forever.
7. Never splice or repair a cord.
8. Inspect all connects, boat side and shore side. If you see any discoloration, place the receptacle or cord immediately.

FLEET COMMITTEE NEWS
BY: ERIC DANA - POWER FLEET COMMANDER
The Fleet Committee wishes everyone a healthy, safe, and enjoyable summer. We just completed another successful Poker Run weekend, June 21 and 22, and want to express our sincerest thanks to everyone who made this possible: club members/ guests, event sponsors, volunteers, donors, and especially SHPYC and staff. We were blessed with beautiful weather (although a little hot) for the Friday evening Dueling Pianos, Saturday afternoon Poker Run, and the Saturday evening Chips for Charity Casino Night and Silent Auction.
Saturday evening capped off with significant importance as we announced that we raised over $16,000 for our charities, Davidson-Cornelius Child Development Center, VIA Health Partners (Levine & Dickson Hospice House), and Calvin Newman Youth Boating Education Fund. In addition, we congratulate the Poker Run winners for presenting great hands this year: James Fulks who took first place with a 5-of-a-kind hand, Ann Watkins who took second place, and Kevin Marshall who came in third. Thank you to all who participated in the fun time on the lake and playing of your card hands. During the Chips for Charity portion of the evening, we also congratulate Brent and Brigid Grinsteiner who won the 50/50 raffle and Kelly Bednarz who was the top winner for

the casino night. What made all of the events even more special is that a few of the day’s winners donated their winnings to charities, The Poker Run and Chips for Charity are just two of the many events organized by the Fleet Committee for the benefit of the club’s members, which also include the Car & Classic Boat Show, Lake History Tours, Pancake Breakfast, Family Fishing, Raft Ups, Pirate Treasure Hunt, and the Pen Cup. These activities are only possible through the support of many volunteers who pitch in to make these events so fun and memorable. We can always use additional volunteers, so please let us know if you are interested in getting involved.
The next event on the calendar is the Raft Up on July 13, which is the first one this year due to poor weather during the first scheduled one in May. More details to follow in the club’s Happenings and The Watch. This Raft Up is sure to be one you do not want to miss. Lastly, we certainly hope everyone has a memorable and safe Fourth of July holiday. We look forward to seeing you again soon this summer.
SAILING SCENE : SAILORS ROUNDING THE MARK ON LAKE NORMAN
Peninsula Yacht Club (PYC) member sailboats continue to get out on Lake Norman on a weekly basis, through the rest of this month utilizing Lake Norman’s sailing race series. Heeling on starboard tack at the start of a race is very exciting for those who participate. Ending it with a beautiful sunset and crew comradery makes for a spectacular evening. Around the middle of August, the Wednesday Night Series will end, but make sure you put the PYC Skipper and Crew Party for August 24th on your calendar, with Safe Harbor providing complimentary beverages and snacks. The purpose of this event is to connect sailboat owner’s “Skippers” with crew (people new to sailing, non-sailboat owners, or even experienced sailors in between boats). At this meeting you will learn what Lake Norman has to offer to the sailing community, like our own Pen Cup Regatta in October and cruising events for non-racers, giving our members the opportunity to meet new people and build relationships.
Interested in Sailing? Want to meet some new people? Learn a new skill? If this sounds like you, the Sail Fleet wants to meet YOU this month!
We are planning upcoming events and want to hear from all captains, crew, juniors, and anyone interested in sailing, regardless of your experience! To get on a sailboat this week, or to participate in our upcoming events, on the water or ashore, please send an email to the Sail Fleet Commander (rob. higgins@gmail.com) or me, your Sail Fleet Ensign Mark Cook (markalancook@yahoo.com).
Fair Winds,
Mark Cook
Sail Fleet Ensign
