Year 2023 - ISSUE NO. 1 - January January 2022

KATHEE DISHNER

GENERAL MANAGER MESSAGE

Dear Members,

Happy New Year 2023! It is going to be a wonderful year here at the Yacht Club. We have so many new and great events for you to enjoy!

I would like to take the time to thank the membership for their contributions to the Employee Holiday Fund. Each year when our members make a donations to this fund it brightens the holidays for all of our hardworking and dedicated team. Thank you!

Cleaning week is Sunday, January 1st-Thursday, January 5th. The club will be closed at this time.

We will introduce a new menu on Friday, January 6th when we re-open after cleaning week. Chef Andres and his culinary team look forward to sharing this new menu for our members to enjoy.

*Yacht members please continue to look for the monthly yacht specific email. We have marina specific information for you in this email.

Our events this month include Italian Night, Member Mixer, Prime Rib Night, Tapas Night and the ever popular Dueling Pianos.

Safety is a priority here at the SHPYC and we care about our members. With the often inclement weather in January we will continue to monitor the property, communicate and keep safety in the forefront of our minds.

Our gas tanks will be replaced in January and we will need to block off areas of the club to keep our members and their cars safe. We will send an email out to our members with all of the details when this commences.

My team and I look forward to a magnificent 2023. As always, it is our pleasure to serve you.

Potatoes and leek soup

Serves: 4-6 People

Ingredients

• 3 tablespoons unsalted butter

• 4 large leeks, white and light green parts only, roughly chopped (about 5 cups)

• 3 cloves garlic, peeled and smashed

• 2 pounds Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and roughly chopped into ½-inch pieces

• 7 cups chicken or vegetable broth

• 2 bay leaves

• 3 sprigs fresh thyme

• 1 teaspoon salt

• ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper

• 1 cup heavy cream

• Chives, finely chopped, for serving

CHEF'S CORNER

Directions

1. Melt the butter over medium heat in a large soup pot. Add the leeks and garlic and cook, stirring regularly, until soft and wilted, about 10 minutes. Adjust the heat as necessary so as not to brown.

2. Add the potatoes, broth, bay leaves, thyme, salt and pepper to the pot and bring to a boil. Cover and turn the heat down to low. Simmer for 15 minutes, or until the potatoes are very soft.

3. Fish out the bay leaves and thyme sprigs, then purée the soup with a hand-held immersion blender until smooth. Add the heavy cream and bring to a simmer. Taste and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper. If the soup is too thin, simmer until thickened. If it's too thick, add water or stock to thin it out. Garnish with chives.

BOATING & MARINA NEWS

Why is it important to check on your vessels in the off season?

It’s very easy to winterize and forget. Just because you took the necessary precautions to prepare for the colder weather doesn’t mean you can wait till spring to check on your vessel.

Here are a few reasons to check on your boat:

1.Batteries without trickle chargers can go dead. Once the batteries go dead, rain and snow melt can collect in the bilge. The amount of water that can be collected over time can be considerable and can cause starter issues, freeze damage, and worst of all could sink your boat.

2.Power outage. If the marina loses power, we will certainly notify our members but if you trip your individual pedestal breaker or GFCI this could result in dead batteries or could result in a bilge heater not working.

3.Check covers for fallen cover poles and pooling water.

Things to remember:

1.NO light bulbs!

2.NO non-approved bilge heaters.

3.Always have GFCI protection for all items plugged in such as heaters, battery chargers etc.

4.Always use approved outdoor power cords. These cords must be rated for outdoor use.

5.Keep outboard motors down.

6.Keep drives down to help protect internal components from rodents and other animals.

7.As you venture out on the docks be sure NOT to be alone and be aware of your surroundings.

Gas Tanks Update:

Beginning Jan 2, 2023 gas will not be operational as we are having new gas tanks put in. It will take between 4-6 weeks to finish. Please note that our sister properties will have gas at this time, Kings Point, Skippers and Westport. We will keep the membership up to date and let you know when the gas is operational again. Thank you for your patience while we continue to improve your club.

Please note there is a 48-hr cancellation policy on all club events.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

The Hausers

Michael and Robin Hauser have been members at The Safe Harbor Peninsula Yacht Club for almost seven years now. They were new to the Charlotte area and were looking for a place to make new friends in addition to enjoying the lake life. After stumbling upon the club Michael thought, "there truly is nothing like this on Lake Norman."

Since joining, the Hauser family attended numerous events through the years. Their favorite events to attend are the various Sunday Brunches, Haunted Harbor, and the famous Lobster Bake.

The Hausers are yacht members, and keep a boat slip here at SHPYC. Keeping their boat here is a favored amenity that surprised them due to the boating culture they found out on the docks. "Some of the best times we've had were spent just hanging on the boat at our slip [...] enjoying music with friends."

When asked if the family had a favorite time here at SHPYC, their response was everyday at sunset. "It seems like everyday there is some of the most amazing sunsets [while] sitting on the rocking chairs with your favorite drink[...] watching the sun go down over the lake. It's a moment which puts everything into perspective."

Michael & Robin Hauser are exactly the reason why SHPYC is in operation. We are here to provide an environment where members like them can escape their busy lives and just simply enjoy the meaningful things in life. Michael says it perfectly for us,"[...]it's so nice to come to a place where you feel like the team is more like family than staff." Thank you to the Hausers and if you see them around the club, make sure to say hi!

The Safe Harbor Peninsula Yacht Club FAMILY

SHPYC Dog of the Month

Here at The Safe Harbor Peninsula Yacht Club we know that fur babies are not just pets but a part of our family. This is why we decided to highlight a dog of the month to celebrate these furry companions. The Levi's have two beautiful dogs named Maggie and Toby. Maggie is a 12 year old Brittany breed that they rescued when she was 10. Toby is 11 and they have had him since he was a puppy. Both love spending time out on the boat. Toby has been boating since he was a puppy!

Do you have a fur baby that loves the spotlight? Send their picture in! They just may be our next Dog of the Month!

Happy New Year!

SAILING SCENE

With the Lighted Boat Parade and the holidays behind us, welcome to the New Year – 2023!! The Sail Fleet already posted our 2023 SHPYC sailing calendar – and it is a busy one filled with opportunities for all. Check it out on the SHPYC Sailing site.

The 2023 LKN lake-wide sailing season kicks off on January 1 (that’s right) with the Ice Bucket race. The Icicle Series and Spring SHPYC Fellowship Regatta quickly follow. Also, look for night racing this year. There are over 90 days of sailing events already scheduled between all of the clubs. We hope to get more boats out of their slips and sailors on the water!

January sailing on Lake Norman is truly amazing with the clear skies and always a brisk breeze. I hope to see you on the water!
