THE WATCH FEBRUARY 2025

GENERALMANAGER MESSAGE

Dear Members,

It was so good to see so many of you in January! We look forward to a great February with many events for you to enjoy. Here are some of the events we have for our members in February:

February 6th-9th: Mid-Atlantic Boat Show

February 9th: Superbowl Watch Party

February 14th: Valentine’s Day

February 15th: Boating Safely Course

February 20th: Wine Society Tasting

February 22nd: Commodore’s Ball

Commodores Hours and Member Mixers are for all of our members. We look forward to seeing you most Fridays from 5:30-7pm with complimentary hors d’oeuvres and a member charge bar. If you are new to the membership, it is a great place to get to know other members.

The Polar Plunge is just around the corner, March 1st, and our members suggested that we add the Chili Cook-Off then so we are blending the two events together. The Plunge will take place in the pool with the Cook-Off on the deck. If you aren’t interested in plunging you can still come and encourage the participants and enjoy some chili!

Wine Society is back! Would you like to attend a tasting to see if it is for you? February 20th is the next tasting. Please call for reservations.

Harry Smith, our Marina Manager/Master Captain, and our Ship Store dockhands are here to assist our members. The phone number is 704-892-9858.

Make your reservations now for the Commodores Ball. Pamela Black is our new Commodore and she has selected a delicious menu and fun atmosphere with a silent disco. February 22nd will be a fabulous time. We are excited to see you there.

We look forward to seeing you at our club!

With kind regards, Kathee Dishner General Manager

Checking Your Boat

Shore power cords: What is the life of a power cord? Does this look familiar? Shore power cords are made to withstand the elements, but not forever! Being exposed to the elements, hot/cold temps, UV rays can take its toll over time. Chafing dry rot/cracking, and exposed wires are all things to look for, and don’t forget our friend the muskrat! These animals can destroy cords. Constant inspection of both shore side and boat side is very important. Periodic inspections under the dock are also needed to ensure the cords are in proper working order and more importantly to provide a SAFER marine environment! If damage is determined the cord has to be replaced. Repair must be approved and can only be done by a licensed electrician.

WARNING: When performing any type of inspection on your cord or cords, make sure the power is off.

For any under-the-dock inspections please find a member of your marina team to lift the pavers to gain access to areas you can’t see. Members must be present when this takes place. Remember, every slip has its own power receptacle/s and is billed accordingly. Please make sure you only plug into the appropriate, corresponding numbered receptacle!

Marina Manager Reminder

Checking your boat is very important, especially during these colder months when the vessel is not being used.

Make sure to always check the following:

Breakers have not tripped

Batteries are charged

Bilge area is dry

Covers are on tight

Remember it’s important to be proactive, not reactive!

DINING

As I write this, we are in the late January deep freeze. February is on its way with warmer temperatures and the wonderful North Carolina sunshine with some members cruising and chartering abroad!

Your 2025 SHPYC Fleet is already hard at work meeting, planning and executing on the wonderful events we host for the Membership. If you would like to get involved, reach out to anyone on the Fleet. We can always use more assistance! For Sailors, these hardy souls are in the midst of the 2025 Icicle Series, hosted by the SHPYC Fleet, which has been living up to its name. Due to unusually chilly temps, our 1st race in January was canceled and our 2nd event on January 25th was on the bubble. Come join us for the final event on February 1st for both racing and awards! Sailors from across Lake Norman will be in attendance!

February also brings the Commodore’s Ball on the 22nd. Join us at this gala event as 2024 Safe Harbor Peninsula Yacht Club Fleet Committee Commodore Chris Slocum welcomes in 2025 Commodore Pamela Black and her team. This black-tie event is always a favorite and guaranteed to be fun – this year featuring a Silent Disco!

As we approach March, be on the lookout for flyers regarding the Polar Plunge on March 1st which benefits the Special Olympics, the Spring Fellowship Sailing Regatta on March 22nd, and the CPR Training Dinner on March 27th. For the remainder of 2025, the SHPYC Fleet will be hosting an additional 20+ events for members. We encourage everyone to join us in the fun!

This month’s safety tips:

· Get a free Vessel Safety Check from the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary to verify the presence and condition of certain safety equipment required by state and federal regulations

· Take a Boating Course. New boaters and experienced experts alike need to be familiar with the boating rules of the road, operating guidelines, and safety tips

· Be weather-wise. Always check local, route and destination weather and water conditions before departure and ensure it is safe to go out Fair winds,

Tim Harbick

2025 Vice Commodore

THESAILINGSCENE

Winter weather will not last and will soon pass!

Safe Harbor Peninsula Yacht Club kicked off the year by hosting the Icicle Series with over 10 skippers and their boats registered braving to race in chilly temperatures. The series concluded the first of this month ending with an award ceremony in the Commodore room. The Icicle Series is an annual event and our club runs it every third year. Proceeds support the Lake Norman Keelboat Council (LNKC) which consists of members from the three yacht clubs on the Lake. LNKC maintains race course buoys and provides consistent racing guidance to sailors on Lake Norman. On March 22, the SHPYC Sail Fleet will host the Spring Fling Fellowship Race. If you have a sailboat please register, or if you know someone who has a sailboat tell them to sign up for this one-day event and help them sail their boat. To register and get more information please go to https://www.regattanetwork.com/event/29230 . If you just want to crew, please contact me at markalancook@yahoo.com no sail boat needed. Check out other 2025 SHPYC sailing opportunities by visiting the Sailing Calendar and Races at https://www.peninsulayacht.com/sailing .

Winter sailing on Lake Norman is glorious with a brisk breeze and clear blue skies. It is a great time of the year to fine tune the art of sailing and enjoy the seclusion of a big lake with very few or no boats at all.

See you on the water,

Mark A. Cook

Sail Fleet Captain
