Program Guide 2021/2022 Online and In-Person Options Available

Words cannot express how much we look forward to Public Health Order restrictions relaxing so we can welcome more of you back to the centre to enjoy our full complement of arts education programs. While many of you are excited to participate in-person again, some of you may prefer to continue learning online so we are continuing to offer both options where possible. New programs on offer will be sure to inspire your creativity; look for the blue “new” label in front of the class title when you peruse the guide. Also starting this fall, we will bring back some of our events beginning with exhibition openings, our annual Reflections festival and our popular pARTies@PdA. In 2022, we will

re-introduce Family Days and our Faculty Performance Series.

Hours of Operation

After more than a year of social distancing required to combat the spread of COVID-19, we had no choice but to adapt in drastic ways. There is little doubt that the pandemic has had, and will continue to have, a lasting and transformative impact on us; exactly how, is still to be determined. This is why we will delve into the theme of transformation this season and explore its many facets through an artistic lens. Be it gradual or sudden, superficial or profound, once transformed - like a caterpillar to a butterfly - something new emerges and there is no going back to exactly what was before.

September 8, 2021 — June 25, 2022

Each year, our students, artists, teachers and visitors reinforce how the arts can be a powerful catalyst for transformation and creative expression. In 2021/2022 we anticipate the exciting transition to a re-connected world and there is no better time to engage (or re-engage) with the arts at Place des Arts! Joan McCauley Executive Director

Music: Young Children Music For Young Children® 2 - 9 years

Music for Young Children® is a Canadian music program for children with required parental participation. Instruction is provided in keyboard skills, singing, ear training, theory, rhythm, sight-reading and composing through dynamic hands-on teaching techniques. The program consists of 4 levels: Sunrise, Sunshine, Sunbeams and Moonbeams. Program materials and books are extra and the cost differs between levels. Place des Arts will make arrangements with registrants to pick up program materials from our facility. A keyboard or piano must be present at home for students to participate. Handouts and homework will be provided each week via email to help with daily practice. Teacher: TBD and Charlene Dubrule Details regarding the teaching schedule are coming soon! Please email Scott Jeffrey, our Fine & Performing Arts Programmer at sjeffrey@placedesarts.ca for more info.

In-Person & Online: The Musical Rainbow 3 ½ - 8 ½ years

In this innovative children’s program, students learn the principles of music through singing 4

songs, chanting rhymes, playing music games, using xylophones, recorders and other instruments. The Musical Rainbow program is based on the Kodály philosophy of using songs and rhymes from children’s folk culture, along with elements of Orff and Suzuki methodology. Note reading, writing and music history are taught in the upper levels. This program provides a solid basic understanding of music and may inspire children to advance their practice at an older age. In the Red level (3 ½ - 4 ½ years), children begin by building a repertoire of musical experiences. The songs and rhymes learned at this level will be used to discover musical concepts in later years. The goal is to have a fun, positive experiences in a group setting. Musical concepts such as fast/slow, loud/soft and higher/lower pitches are covered and children are made aware of beat in music. Get ready for singing, musical games and fun! The Yellow level (4 ½ - 5 ½ years) has more singing, more games and more FUN! Students begin their first music reading and writing booklets. Hand signs are used to denote awareness of pitch differences, rhythm names are spoken and written in stick notation, and pitch matching and melody charts are used to facilitate in-tune singing.

In the Green level (5 ½ - 6 ½ years), the music staff is introduced. Children learn to read and write notes on the staff using both absolute pitch names and hand sign names. The students create three booklets using three different keys for reading and writing music. Students begin the recorder at this level. In the Blue level (6 ½ - 7 ½ years), students begin playing the recorder which gives them a head start on learning other instruments when they are older. The sharp and the flat are introduced. Students learn to read and write music using three full major and minor scales. In the Purple level (7 ½ - 8 ½ years), students become quite dexterous on the recorder, learning several classical pieces and longer folk and popular pieces by the end of the year. Singing is improved through vocal exercises and solo work. Music theory is expanded on and students compose their own music. There is a lot of part-work, music terms and signs, and still tons of fun at this final level of the MUSICAL RAINBOW! Supplies not included. The supply list can be found under the Music program page in the description of the class. Gather all necessary supplies before the first day of class.

Bursaries & Subsidies Increasing Accessibility One of our main goals at Place des Arts is to increase participation in, and accessibility to, the arts. We aim to engage as many people as possible, so they can explore their creativity, express themselves, learn new skills, connect with others, heal and grow through the myriad benefits of arts education. Each year we raise money through sponsorships, grants and our annual online auction (see page 43) to fund bursaries and program subsidies to help remove financial barriers to our arts education programs. Place des Arts also fully subsidizes our Artist-inResidence program for local school children, providing fun and engaging arts workshops at no-cost to schools. We also have launched our Creative HeARTs program providing newcomer families with opportunities to engage in the arts! P L AC E D ES ARTS 20 2 1 /20 2 2 P RO G R AM G UI D E

Why does it cost more to register online as opposed to in person or on the phone? Online registration provides customers the convenience of enrolling at any time and avoiding wait times. All registrations processed online are subject to a non-refundable convenience fee charged and collected by The Active Network Inc., Place des Arts’ online registration software provider. Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discovery Card are accepted for online payments. Can I enroll into a class that has already started? Late registration is accepted at the discretion of Place des Arts and where space is available. Please inquire at the registration desk. Why are class age limits strictly adhered to? Our classes are organized according to the developmental abilities of each age group. By adhering to set age groups, we ensure a quality experience for all students in the class. Why are class maximums strictly adhered to? Keeping to our class maximums ensures a high-quality learning experience, allowing teachers to provide individualized attention to each student. Also, due to COVID-19, we are strictly adhering to classroom capacities to keep students safe. P L AC E D ES ARTS 20 2 1 /20 2 2 P RO G R AM G UI D E

Are classes ever cancelled? Place des Arts reserves the right to cancel a class due to insufficient enrolment. Place des Arts will notify students/parents at least 48 hours prior to the start of a class. We will attempt to reschedule each student for another class at a convenient time. If this is not possible, a refund will be granted. Supplies for classes should not be purchased by the student until a few days before the class start date to avoid unnecessary expenditures if the class is cancelled. Please note: online processing fees are non-refundable. What’s the difference between Sep-Jun and fall, winter and spring session classes? Fall, winter and spring session classes and workshops run anywhere from one day to twelve weeks of classes each session. Sep-Jun classes and private lessons follow the school year and run continuously. Fall, winter and spring session registration may be done online, by phone or in person at Place des Arts. Sep-Jun registration, including private lessons, may be done by phone at 604.664.1636 or in person through the registration desk at Place des Arts. You may register for a Sep-Jun private or semi-private lessons at any time during the year, space permitting.

Can I view or try out a class before committing to the entire session? We do not allow customers to view or try out a class before registering. It is best to consult with our knowledgeable registration staff regarding any questions or concerns you may have. In some instances, we can arrange for you to have a discussion directly with the teacher. Do I pay a registration fee for my Sep-Jun class and/or private lesson each season? Yes. The registration fee is charged each season, and covers administrative costs associated with registering new customers, enrolling students, payment processing and transaction fees associated with our registration software. It also helps to cover the cost, repair and upkeep of equipment in our facility. If you or your child remains enrolled in at least one Sep-Jun class or private lesson, the registration fee applies to an unlimited number of Sep-Jun enrolments per season for that specific registrant. Can I rent space at Place des Arts? Yes! Place des Arts has several spaces available that are perfect for hosting your own activities.
