Increasing Financial Accessibility

At Place des Arts our goal is to increase engagement with, and accessibility to, the arts. We aim to reduce financial barriers to make our programs accessible to as many children and youth as possible.

To advance this goal, we raise funds through sponsorships, grants and our annual online auction (October 19 - November 2, 2024) which allows us to offer bursaries and program subsidies as well as low-cost and no-cost programs and events.

Bursaries

Anyone age 17 and under, who wishes to take classes or lessons but may not be able to afford our full fees, is eligible to apply for a bursary.

Bursary applications are accepted throughout the year; the deadline to receive an application is six weeks before the class/lesson start date to which the bursary will be applied.

Visit placedesarts.ca/scholarships-and-bursaries/ for the bursary guidelines and application form.

Applicants will be notified of the status of their application within two weeks of their submission. Awarded bursary amounts will be placed as a credit on the applicant’s Place des Arts account.

Another opportunity for funding is through our scholarships (find out more on pg. 46).

Financial Assistance for Recreation

In partnership with the City of Coquitlam’s Financial Assistance for Recreation (FAR)* and our local social service agencies, we provide full and partial subsidies to our arts education programs.

*Visit coquitlam.ca/499/Financial-Assistance-forRecreation to view the eligibility requirements and the application.

Subsidized programs and events

Thanks to our generous supporters, Place des Arts fully subsidizes our Artist in Residence program for local school children, providing fun and engaging art workshops to schools. For people who are curious about programs at Place des Arts, you can attend our Family Day events which have fun drop-in activities for all ages led by our skilled teachers. Our Creative HeARTs program provides newcomer families with free opportunities to engage in the arts.

View pg. 42 to learn about our events (which includes some low-cost and free options).

Musical Rainbow

3 ½ - 8 ½ years

In this innovative children’s program, students learn the principles of music through singing songs, chanting rhymes, playing music games and using xylophones, recorders and other instruments. This program is based on the Kodály philosophy along with elements of Orff and Suzuki methodology. Note-reading, writing and music history are taught at the upper levels. Gain a solid understanding of music and develop a strong foundation for children to study music as they age.

In the Red level (3 ½ - 4 ½ years), students begin by building a repertoire of musical experiences. The songs and rhymes learned will be used to inform musical concepts in later years. The goal is to have a fun, positive experience in music in a group setting. Concepts such as music beat, fast/slow, loud/soft and higher/lower pitches are explored.

The Yellow level (4 ½ - 5 ½ years) has more singing, more games and more fun! Students begin their first music reading and writing booklets. Hand signs are used to convey differences in pitch and rhythm names are spoken and written in stick notation. Pitch matching and melody charts are used to assist in singing in tune.

In the Green level (5 ½ - 6 ½ years) the music staff is introduced, and students learn to read and write notes upon the staff using both absolute pitch names and hand sign names. The students create three booklets using three different keys for reading and writing music. They also begin playing the recorder.

In the Blue level (6 ½ - 7 ½ years), students continue playing the recorder which will provide a wonderful foundation for learning other instruments in the future. The sharp and flat are introduced. Students learn to read and write music using three full major and minor scales.

In the Purple level (7 ½ - 8 ½ years), students become skillful on the recorder, learning several classical pieces and longer folk and popular pieces by the end of the year. Singing is improved through vocal exercises and solo work. Music theory is expanded and students compose music. Part-work, music terms and hand signs are built upon at this final level of the Musical Rainbow!
