Crafting kindness: Women’s Shed supports community groups By SOPHIA MCCAUGHAN Narromine Women’s Shed have been busy throughout the first-half of the year, with the ladies hard at work making handcrafted blankets, clothes protectors and more, to donate to major organisations throughout Narromine Shire and beyond. In this vein, the Women’s Shed recently gifted an array of crocheted blankets and clothes protectors for residents at Narromine’s only aged-care facility, Timbrebongie House. Timbrebongie chief executive Tracey Tuohey told Narromine Star the Women’s Shed has been donating items to the facility for the past decade or so. “They have been helping out Timbrebongie House for a number of years now with crocheted blankets, helping-out with clothes protectors, lots of different sewing,” Ms Tuohey said. “They have generously donated $500 to Timbrebongie House. I am blown-away by the generosity and just the work that is being done here,” she added. On top of their sewing for Timbrebongie House, the Women’s Shed members have also been working tirelessy to make toiletry bags for the Pink Ladies to hand out at Dubbo Base and Narromine Hospitals. selected tasks which will enable extra care to be given to patients, add positive value to the patients experience in hospital, and enhance the relationship between the health service and the community. Averial Cox is a Pink Lady herself and also a member of Narromine Women’s Shed. She told Narromine Star she recently joined the group to help in their effort of donating goods to the community. “I knew that they were making toiletry bags and things for the Pink Ladies, so I decided to come and be a member here as well,” Averial explained. “I’ve been looking for craft ideas to make keep myself busy,” she added. The Women’s Shed also knits and crochets outfits for premature babies at Dubbo Base Hospital. Gilgandra locals Ida Johnson and Faye Morton have also been long-time members of the Women’s Shed and make the 160km round trip to Narromine every week. They said it is worth the trip each week, as Gilgandra does not have a women’s shed. “We’ve been coming here for about five years, and it is just really about keeping social and dusting up our crafting skils,” the ladies concluded.
