Callum shines in training awards

By SHARON BONTHUYS Narromine High School Captain Callum Hutchison did his school, family and community proud last week as one of three fi nalists in the SchoolBased Apprentice/Trainee of the Year category of the 2025 Western NSW Regional Training Awards.

While he didn’t walk away with the top gong at the event in Orange on June 12, Callum is already a winner in many eyes as he continues to smash his personal and professional goals while completing his final year of formal schooling.

As part of his studies, Callum has quietly been completing a Certificate III in Sport, Aquatics and Recreation, working as a coach/sports trainee for Creating Chances, an organisation that empowers youth through sport.

Callum is grateful to Creating Chances for the many opportunities it has made available to him, including a trip to France last year to attend Festival24 with 500 other young

“Creating Chances has built my confidence, my life skills, and day to day skills,” Callum told the Narromine Star ahead of the Regional Training Awards.

“It’s all been really helpful for my future and helped me find a career path as well,” he added.

As part of his vocational studies at Narromine High, Callum coaches rugby for youth and younger children during and after school, and enjoys helping to build their skills in communication, resilience and teamwork.

Post-high school, Callum hopes to pursue his passion for helping others and study social work at university.

“I’d like to carry on my sport and youth work, and any sort of social work,” he added.

Narromine High’s Career Advisor Jan Davison said the school is thrilled with Callum’s nomination for the Regional Training Awards.

By SHARON BONTHUYS A century of giving and supporting the community will be joyfully celebrated later this month when the members of the Collie branches of the Country Women’s Association (CWA) of NSW gather with others from near and far for a luncheon to mark a significant milestone their centenary.

Collie is a community with two CWA branches, and while technically the centenary applies to the Day Branch, which held its first meeting in December, 1925, the 100th anniversary of CWA operating locally will be celebrated by both the Day and Evening Branches.

A delicious luncheon prepared by branch members will form part of the event on the last Saturday in June that will also include memorabilia displays and other activities.

The event in the historic Collie CWA Hall is completely free to attend, funded by the efforts of local CWA members. Attendees must RSVP though, so organisers know numbers for catering.

Past state president of the CWA of NSW, Mrs Joy Beames, will be a special guest at the event, which will also be attended by CWA members from other branches in the region and beyond.

Indeed, 2025 is a big year for CWA centenaries. Another 16 branches of CWA of NSW will join Collie in celebrating their centenaries this year, such was the popularity of the organisation for country women that started way back in 1922. Nearby Warren is also set to celebrate its

Helen spoke to the Warren Star and Gilgandra Weekly about the preparations for the event.

“It’s all happening! We’re getting there,” she said.

A working bee was held at the hall recently and members have been busy gathering memorabilia for the displays on the day, she added.

The planning committee has issued personal invitations to the event, and is pleased with the response at this stage.

“We’ve had a pretty good response. The more, the merrier,” Helen said.

One challenge organisers have faced has been locating past members who have moved away from the area.

“We’re finding it a little bit hard to contact people who have been here in the past or families of past members,” Helen said.

The organisers would love readers of this story to spread the word and help them connect with past members and or their families so they can be invited to the event.

Barwon MP seeks transparency for Murray-Darling Basin water agreements

By LOCAL NEWSDESK State Member for Barwon, Roy Butler MP, recently introduced a bill into the NSW Parliament to increase transparency around Murray-Darling Basin Water Agreements, allowing concerns to be raised before an agreement is signed.

The Water Management Amendment (Intergovernmental Agreements) Bill 2025 prevents the NSW government from entering into any agreement involving the Murray-Darling Basin with the Commonwealth or other states, until at least 15 sitting days after the draft agreement has been made available to members of Parliament. These changes will have no impact on the current operational management of water.

Several Intergovernmental Agreements have been entered into since the Murray-Darling Basin Plan was implemented in 2012, which have had serious impacts on the distribution of water.

“Traditionally, these Intergovernmental Agreements between the Basin states and the Commonwealth have been negotiated and agreed to behind closed doors,” Mr Butler said.

“Although NSW ceded some of their constitutional rights to the Commonwealth to enable these Water Agreements, it’s still important that parliamentarians have some visibility over what’s being negotiated before they are in place,” he added.

“My bill will shed light on Murray-Darling Water Agreements before they are finalised, giving us the opportunity to share feedback on the potential impacts,” the Barwon MP concluded.

push the smoke alarm button and if there is no beep, there’s no alarm, so it’s a good idea to replace it, because your life might depend on it. A working smoke alarm provides the earliest and most effective warning of a fi re to give residents the chance to get out and call Triple Zero (000).

Fire authorities also urge the community to remain vigilant with the use of lithium-ion batteries this winter, especially for e-bikes and e-scooters, and never leave cooking unattended or throw water onto a fat fi re as it will intensify the flames.

By SOPHIA MCCAUGHAN Half-loops, full-loops and barrel rolls were all on the agenda when the NSW Aerobatic Championships took fl ight in Narromine last week.

The aerobatic pilots flew into Narromine on the evening of Tuesday, June 10 and began their practice round on Wednesday, where pilots were given an opportunity to fi ne-tune their skills with competition kicking off on Thursday, June 12.

Competition aerobatics is a very exciting sport which demands high levels of skills, discipline, and concentration with flyers required to complete a predetermined sequence of manoeuvres inside an imaginary cube of airspace that is known in the competition as the “aerobatic box”.

Pilots compete at different levels of competition ranging from “Entry Level” to “Unlimited”, depending on their level of skill and the performance capabilities of the aircraft.

President, Peter Townsend told the Narromine Star that it was a good turnout this year for the NSW Championships.

“We’ve got 19 competitors over six grades of competition, all the way from people starting in their fi rst loops and rolls, al the way up to, you know, world class competition,” he explained.

Mr Townsend said that there were a record number of rookies having their first go at competition aerobatics at Narromine.

“We’ve got three brand new pilots, and we’ve got a guy who has not competed for 29 years so that is just fantastic to see,” he said.

When asked why he still keeps coming back to the niche sport, Mr Townsend said it was “fun”.

“It’s just fun, it’s a three dimensional expression of freedom in the sky,” he expressed.

The NSW chapter is an affiliated member of the Australian Aerobatic Club (AAC) formed in 1970 to foster interest in the sport by providing opportunities to train and compete and for pilots to learn and practice the judging techniques of competition aerobatics.

By SOPHIA MCCAUGHAN NSW Country Mayors Association (CMA) has welcomed the release of a Parliamentary report seeking to address the drivers of youth crime through early intervention.

The Legislative Assembly Committee on Law and Safety’s Interim Report on Community Safety in Regional and Rural Communities, is the fi rst of two papers they intend to publish on the subject, with the second focusing on policing and legislative reform.

Youth crime has been a blight on regional and rural communities in recent years, especially for Western NSW, with a total of 21,287 young offenders reported between April last year and March this year for various offences, according to the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research (BOSCAR).

The Committee received almost 200 submissions for the report and found that there is an urgent need for early intervention programs in the bush to help deal with complex social drivers of youth crime in regional and rural NSW. Chairman of the CMA, and Temora Mayor, Councillor Rick Firman, said the Board and its members are very concerned about the rising level of youth crime in remote, rural, and regional areas.

“The Committee’s report makes 11 fi ndings, most of which echo the concerns that our members have about the underlying issues that must be addressed if the problems are to be solved,” Cr Firman said.

“The Committee has made 19 recommendations to address those fi ndings, many of which require better and more

Committee Chair and Member for Mount Druitt, Edmond Atalla, said that a holistic and evidence-based approach to addressing underlying factors of youth crime, is the way to move forward.

“Tough-on-crime responses might seem appealing, but they don’t deliver long-term change,” Mr Atalla said.

“We need to invest in what works and that means supporting vulnerable young people early, before they come into contact with the justice system,” he added.

However, Member for Dubbo, Dugald Saunders, said the NSW government is not doing enough to address the youth crime crisis.

“All we’ve seen in the past two years, is young ring-leaders wreaking havoc on our communities, breaking into people’s homes, stealing cars, hurting loved ones, and costing lives,” Mr Saunders claimed.

There has been a two per cent increase in the number of youth offenders in the last 10 years to March 2025, according to BOSCAR,” he concluded.

The Narromine CWA has been going for over 100 years now, did you know?

Late last month it was widely reported that Orange Hospital - which services a region the size of the United Kingdom - has been regularly operating under “Code Black” conditions.

Director of Surgery at Orange Hospital, Dr Rob Knox, explained “Code Black” means no available beds, no capacity to accept regional transfers, and an overwhelmed emergency system.

Dr Knox told this journalist the Code Black scenario is the latest in a long series of issues plaguing local health service delivery at Orange Hospital, which allegedly stems from chronic under-resourcing and opposition by management to implement locally-identified solutions.

Unrealistic budgets and key performance indicators (KPIs) have also reportedly put regional patient outcomes at risk.

“We are seeing patients with emergency conditions like bowel obstructions and fractures left waiting, while non-urgent surgeries go ahead - simply to meet KPIs,” said Dr Knox.

Concerns also include a blowout in emergency and elective surgery waiting times, alleged recategorisation of cancer surgeries and publication of false wait-list data, specialists being prevented from treating patients, and theatre and bed capacity underutilised.

They are used to having to travel for services. But, you know, travelling to a big city is something most of us find really quite confronting,” Dr Knox said.

“Our key aim in raising all of this is to ensure that we have a sustainable workforce for the future and well equipped local hospitals, be it Orange or Dubbo, that are equipped with the latest technologies and up to date clinicians who are deeply invested in the local area to provide services as close to home as is practical,” he explained.

“There’s a lack of incentive to really invest in local service delivery, and that’s something we’re desperate to try to overcome,” he added.

On May 29, State Member for Orange, Phil Donato, called upon Health Minister Ryan Park in parliament to undertake an independent and transparent investigation into the issues raised.

Minister Park agreed, indicating the current government had invested $200 million into trying to reduce the post-pandemic surgery backlog.

Western NSW Local Health District also released several media statements addressing the concerns raised.

“I’m pleased the minister has announced an independent, third party, transparent investigation, because that’s exactly what needs to happen,” Dr Knox concluded.

BY PAT RILEY Small crowd that braved the cold of last Thursday to attend the International Day Lunch organised by the Trangie branch of the Country Women’s Association (CWA), was pleasantly surprised by the fine food and the opportunity to gain fascinating knowledge and understanding of the nation of South Korean Each year the CWA nominates a country for study by its members, and this year the north asian democracy was the chosen subject.

Each branch celebrates this chosen country by organising an event that focuses on the nation’s many different facets; history, culture, religion, traditions, and political and economic systems.

This year, brother and sister team, Alex and Chris Gartside, indulged their passion for all things Korean to create a meal that truly paid homage to the cuisine of the Republic of South Korea.

South Korean artefacts and the background sound of Korean music enhanced the atmosphere created by the aroma of a traditional “K-BBQ,” complete with salads and side dishes prepared and served by the duo.

It was a disappointing round six of netball for the Trangie Netball Club after they suffered weekend losses across the board.

In the B-Grade competition, the Trangie Lightning suffered a tight loss against the Fusion Fierce following their round five win by forfeit against the Narromine SkyHawks.

The Lightning fought their hardest at Dubbo Netball Courts on Saturday, but unfortunately the goal-circle attack by the Fierce was simply too good with the Trangie netballers going down 57 to 47 in a 10-goal thriller.

again in the B-Grade competition, they had to forfeit in their round six clash against the Dragonfliez.

Their two-week break from netball should prepare them enough for a Shire showdown against the Narromine SkyHawks in round seven.

It now sees the Trangie Fire drop to last on the ladder but the Lightning remain firm in their position on the ladder sitting in fourth-place.

At the time of publication there were no results available on PlayHQ in Trangie Storm’s Division Two clash against the MAGS Meerkats with the Storm sitting last on the ladder.

They will be up against the Gilgandra Panthers in their round seven clash in the Dubbo Netball Association Saturday Netball Competition.

It was a Shire showdown between the Trangie Wildfire and the Narromine Hornets in the under 10’s competition.

It was an extremely close match between the Hornets and the Wildfire with only three-goals separating the two sides.

Despite Trangie’s defence and attack prowess, the Hornets were just too good, taking the home the win 11 to 8.

Trangie Netball Club will be working hard at training this week as they hope to come back with some good wins after round eight of the competition this weekend.

Tigers work hard in difficult away match

Beautiful authentic hand-embroidered Korean national costume traditionally worn on special occasions. were strung along the walls, around the hall, and over the tables to present an authentic South Korean look.

A South Korean doll, dating back to the Korean War (1950-1953) and loaned for the occasion by Alex’s mum, Clarissa, was also an item of great interest.

In explaining their interest in South Korea, Alex recalled watching Korean dramas online as a child when aged only 11-years-old, becoming captivated by the culture.

Asian music such as K-Pop was also a draw-card and an enticement to learn more about the country - a nation split in two by political division - its people, history and culture.

The local library also proved a great source of information for Alex and Chris, and it was only a matter of time before the pair decided to enhance their knowledge by delving into the diet of the country, and this they did with gusto! With the aid of online videos, they then taught themselves the fine art of perfecting K-BBQ. The fact their grandfather fought in the Korean War himself, also proved an incentive to learn as much as they could about their chosen country of study.

Alex’s vast knowledge and understanding of the South Korean way of life added an extra dimension to the international flavour of the event.

Trangie worked hard away from home to keep the score-line more respectable than it could have been in a 52-point loss to Blayney in Central West Rugby Union’s Oilsplus North Men’s First Grade competition on Saturday, June 14.

Tigers president Lewis Goodman reported the side were low on numbers for the long trip after a few late withdrawals.

The hosts, Blayney Rams, ran up a big early lead, keeping up with the clock.

However, through the final 40 to 50 minutes of the match Trangie were able to reduce the amount of tries they conceded and also pick up a converted five-pointer themselves to go down 59-7.

In another positive, the Tigers won their tight-head scrums, competed well in loose-head scrums and won most of its own lineout ball.

Goodman was unable to attend the match but reported back from the coaching staff including Peter Evans that the Tigers did well.

“From my understanding, Blayney got off to a pretty red-hot start,” Goodman said.

“But from what I’ve been told, our scrum and our lineout were really good this week.”

Tigers halfback Ernest Jones impressed at the base of the ruck, while props Kris Cambell and Mitchell Price performed well in the set pieces.

Trangie has a unique approach to their lineout.

Captain Ronan Hobday, who can play a variety of positions, is playing hooker but is one of the lineout jumpers.

It means Logan Fraser, who was at number eight according to the team lists on Rugby Xplorer, throws into the lineouts.

reserved for a side’s hooker.

“Not very often you hear a hooker being a (lineout) jumper,” he said of Hobday. “It’s a bit back to front, but it works.”

Second-placed Geurie will be a big challenge this week for Trangie at Alan Burns Oval this Saturday. The Goats had a huge win against Canowindra on the weekend.

Goodman said the Tigers are keeping expectations simple for the rest of the 2025 season.

“Our objective is simply to get good numbers and just build on our skillset,” Goodman said.

“We have a young and inexperienced team … we’d love to get a win, or a few wins, but our main goal is to keep learning.

“We keep working together and improving and getting that experience and then hopefully next year it builds again and we will be a better side.”

In other results from the Oilsplus North competition, Molong defeated Wellington 40-10, Coolah accounted for Yeoval 47-0 and Geurie had that massive 104-0 success against Canowindra.

We are seeking a Mining Engineer to join our team at Tomingley Gold Operations. Reporting to the Senior Mine Engineer, the primary focus of this role is to support operations to achieve the mine targets and to ensure that the mine plan, designs, schedules and reports are produced to optimise operational and financial targets. This role would suit a Mining Engineer who has completed or is close to completing their underground time and who is seeking to learn a wide array of technical skills in an underground mine.

The role would also fit an experienced engineer interested in expanding their skill set and growing into other opportunities as the mine grows. This role offers exposure to mine automation and the integration of the new paste plant as examples. These are just some of the exciting new directions Tomingley Gold Operations are offering. This role would suit those mining engineers not wanting to be pigeonholed and are looking for exposure to multiple mining disciplines to become a well-rounded Mining Engineer.

The key responsibilities of the role will include: • Drill and Blast Design • Development and implementation of weekly mine plans.

• Undertaking field related tasks as required • Maintain strong working relationships between technical and operational staff.

• Ventilation surveys • Daily reporting and KPI measurement • Underground inspections • Complete mine project work as required • Assist with pastefill engineering work as required.

About You • Tertiary degree in Mining Engineering or similar • 2+ years of underground mining industry exposure is desirable.

• Motivated contributor with ideas on how to implement technology in a new underground mine.

• Some experience with Deswik would be highly regarded; • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills • Current unrestricted Australian Open licence • Civil or Geotechnical Engineers looking to transition into the mining industry are encouraged to apply.

Recent graduate would also be considered for the right candidate.

BY ALAN TRESEDER Looking at our family photo here brings back a lot of memories. Just four hours earlier, we could have lost our son and brother Bob as he went shooting after church and rolled Dad’s ute!

So Dad had the photo taken as a blessing. Us kids - John (13), my twin sister Helen (11), and me (Alan, 11), with Bob and our parents in our Sunday best, just back from Sunday School.

Our Dad built up the hardware and sawmill in the 60s. Bob was older than us and got into the swing of things there. And yes, he was glued to the workplace and nearly always the last to leave, or there still on weekends to get the job done.

Bob worked hard and even missed seeing his daughter Vicky being born as he was out bush getting new ideas on log carting.

Then Bob, with a couple of his mates, joined the Fire Brigade. Wow, there was plenty of “hurry” when in earlier years the siren would ring. To hear it sound off…

Yes, Bob would drop everything he was doing. Pushing a log through the saw, he’d leave it halfway through with John hanging on the other end… Or up at the dump cutting logs,

he’d drop the saw and run, undoing his apron.

To see him trip and fall, dust flying!

Oh yes, he grabbed the first car or truck he could jump into and the wheels were spinning going around the corner. He was wearing out too many tyres so we would have a car ready to go. Another time, he jumped in saying “go, go, go!” and of course, he wasn’t in!

Who would think Bob would be going to his own fire in 1980 when the sawmill burnt to the ground? That day, Bob was first in the fire truck, doors open, telling the boys to “hurry up, jump in, we’ve got a fire to put out.”

Yes, it was a big fire and wow, a big clean up the next day. All the help from the townspeople, 17 trucks and 140 guys helping to clean the wreckage the next day. A big thanks to all involved.

For a lifetime in local business, and selling in 2018, and the years in the Fire Brigade, it was wonderful recognition for Bob to be awarded the Australia Day citizenship award a few years ago.

School captain Callum shines as finalist in Regional Training Awards

Narromine High School Captain Callum Hutchison has been working with young people as part of his VET studies, and was recently a finalist in the Western NSW Regional Training Awards. PHOTOS: NSW GOVERNMENT. From page 1 “We are super proud of his achievements,” Jan said.

“Narromine High School values and recognises the importance of Vocational Education and Training (VET) in providing a key pathway to employment and further education. It also provides accredited training, focusing on providing practical skills needed for the workforce,” she added.

“Our VET subjects on offer cover a large number of careers and industries.”

Narromine High School currently has 109 VET enrolments across five different courses in Years 10-12, with some students doing multiple VET courses, Jan explained.

Approximately 80 per cent of senior students at the school would be enrolled in at least one VET course, including certificates in hospitality, agriculture, construction pathways, and fitness.

“Because they’re hands-on courses, students will develop good workplace skills. The kids are really keen to pursue those courses on offer,” Jan added.

His school is not the only one proud of Callum’s success.

State Member for the Dubbo Electorate and NSW Nationals Leader Dugald Saunders was effusive in his praise of the Narromine High School Captain.

“Callum should be very proud of himself. To be named

as a finalist in the SchoolBased Apprentice/Trainee of the Year category is a great achievement,” he told the Narromine Star.

“When you add that to the list of contributions he is making to his school and community, he is one outstanding young man!” Mr Saunders added.

“Well done, Callum, keep sharing your passion.”

Winners from last week’s regional event will go on to represent the Western NSW community in their respective categories as they are considered for the 2025 NSW Training Awards in September, now in their 70th year.

Presented by the Department of Education’s Training Services, the NSW Training

Awards recognise outstanding achievement in the vocational education and training sector.

Minister for Skills, TAFE and Tertiary Education, Steve Whan said, “The finalists and winners from this year’s Western NSW Regional Training Awards represent the premier VET talent in the region.

“Having a thriving and robust VET sector generates ripples in the local community with investment into spaces like healthcare, infrastructure, education and the economy,” Minister Whan added.

“The Training Awards support the NSW Government’s efforts to address skills shortages by spotlighting excellence in VET.” This year, the top accolades

at the Western NSW Regional Training Awards went to Daniel Stephens, Apprentice of the Year, employed and trained through Essential Energy, and Olivia Barsley, Trainee of the Year, employed by Hutcheon and Pearce and trained through TAFE NSW. Darby Hubber from Cowra was recognised as the VET in Schools Student of the Year.

Meanwhile, for quietly spoken Callum, it’s head down and renewed focus on his studies as he completes his final months of formal education.

“I’d like to thank everyone who has suppor ted me and encouraged me to keep going with [my studies],” he concluded.

By JOHN EDWARDS It has been a busy few weeks at Narromine Bowling Club, with Championship Bowls now well underway.

Results from the Major/ Minors Pairs Results from the June long-weekend included Adam Jermyn and Duane Faro winning on a forfeit, with James Coen and Trumby Russell, also winning on a forfeit due to people being away for the public holiday.

Robbie Stanford and Cliffy Harris then defeated Peter Cross and Neil Fitzgerald by 24-14 whereas Kev Rider and Geoff Cape defeated Kerry Martin and Neil Harris by 27-20.

This weekend has the semifinals taking place with Adam and Duane taking-on James and Trumby and Robbie and Cliffy taking-on Kev and Geoff.

Raced at Walgett, Saturday, June 14 On the same day her son, apprentice jockey Braith Nock, rode his fi rst Sydney winning treble, Bendemeer trainer, Jane Clement won the 1400-metre Geronimo Farm Equipment-New HollandWalgett Cup with the mount, “Awesome Tycoon”.

Racing in front of a bumper crowd at Walgett on Saturday, “Tavanasia” had led the Cup field before Awesome Tycoon (Brontë Simpson at $6) from near last, emerged with a strong run to beat Tavanasia (Shayleigh Ingelse at $3) by more than two-lengths with “Hardyo” (Zoe Hunt at $10), a stablemate of the winner, running on well for third.

Brontë is now 23 and is apprenticed to Wyong trainer, Sara Ryan and, at her fi rst race ride in May, won on the Kristen Buchanan-trained “Stylebender” at Muswellbrook with Awesome Tycoon now her third winner.

In the opening event at Walgett, Brontë also won the 900-metre Maiden Plate on the Michael Lunn, Dubbo-trained “Soho Coco”.

Last on the home turn, Soho Coco (at $4.20) sprinted down the outside for a two-lengths win over “Tiny Missile” (Zoe Hunt at $4.50) and “Horeb” (Billy Cray at $3.60).

Joke of the week: Two men are out hunting and, as they’re walking along, they come upon a huge hole in the ground.

They approach it and are amazed by the size of it.

The fi rst hunter says, “Wow, that’s some hole. I can’t even see the bottom. I wonder how deep it is?”

The second hunter says, “I don’t know, let’s throw something down and listen and see how long it takes to hit the bottom.”

So they pick it up and carry it over, and count one, and two and three, and throw it in the hole.

They are standing there listening and looking over the

edge and they hear a rustling in the bushes behind them.

While they are standing there looking at each other, then gazing into the hole, and trying to figure out what that was all about, an old farmer walks up.

“Say there” says the farmer, “You fellers didn’t happen to see my goat around here anywhere, did you?”

The fi rst hunter says, “funny you should ask, but we were just standing here a minute ago and a goat came running out of the bushes doing about a hundred miles an hour and jumped headfi rst into this hole here!”

Jackson wins Cannonball with “Smooth Esprit” Raced at Coonamble, Sunday, June 15.

Richard Jackson, the longtime Walgett trainer now based in Dubbo, on Sun-

day won the prestigious Nutrien Ag Solutions Coonamble Cannonball with the mount “Smooth Esprit”.

The talented galloper is better known for success over longer distances, however Jackson had the eight-year-old gelding ready to fi re over the 1100-metres sprint on its fi rst run back from a spell.

Rides “Deion”, “That’s Better”, and “Rothgate” all vied for the lead in the run to the home turn, with Smooth Esprit parked on the rails and ready to strike.

Superbly ridden by Nick Heywood, Smooth Esprit (from $21 in to $15) shot along the inside to win by over a length from “Dream Game” (Shannen Llewellyn at $8.50) and Deion (Tilly McCarroll from $2 in to $1.90 favourite).

Garry Lunn also has a tremendous prospect in the three-year-old fi lly, “Fetes Des Meres”, winner of its only two starts for the Dubbo trainer.

Unplaced at five starts in Victoria before coming to the Lunn stable, Fetes Des Meres has demolished big fields at Warren and Coonamble and is defi nitely a horse to follow.

Mowing down the opposition when a runaway winner after being well back at Warren, Fetes Des Meres was again ridden by leading apprentice, Shannen Llewellyn, in the 1300-metre Dave Carter Plumbing/GM Constructions Class 1 Handicap at Coonamble.

Travelling smoothly, Fetes Des Meres (from $3 in to $2.30 favourite) worked through the field to take the lead turning for home, then

accelerated to a more than four lengths win from “Skeptical” (Clayton Gallagher at $6) and “All Too Sneaky” (Kody Nestor at $4.80).

Always popular at Coonamble is a win for former local trainer, Damian Lane, when he returns with a team from his Wyong stables.

A place-getter in the 2024 Wellington Boot, “Sneaky Sofia” represented Lane in the 1200-metre Pennell Transport/Finch Engineering TwoYear-Old and Three-Year-Old Handicap with apprentice Brontë Simpson in the saddle.

Simpson had ridden a winning double at Walgett the previous day, including on “Awesome Tycoon” in the Cup, and her 4kg allowance proved crucial over the closing stages at Coonamble.

Challenged over the final 300 metres, Sneaky Sofia (at $3.20) held off “Blue De Beers” (Clayton Gallagher, in from $2.15 to the $2.05 favourite) by a half-head with almost three lengths to the third-placed “Andale” (Kath Bell-Pitomac at $26).

Former successful harness racing trainer-driver, Warwick Harper from Dubbo, is the owner of “Great Southernland” which fi nally broke through to win the 1200-metre PW Concrete and Fox Transport Maiden Handicap.

Trained at Narromine by Kylie Kennedy, Great Southernland started at $51 and, after racing near the tail of the field, came home with a good run down the outside to beat “Spradax” (Mikayla Weir at $61) and “The Git Up” (Clayton Gallagher on

the $2.05 favourite).

Kylie Kennedy also trains “Lagoon” (Jake Pracey-Holmes), which as a $31 outsider, ran a bold race when second to the Brett Robb-trained “West Head” (Shayleigh Ingelse on the $1.80 favourite) in the 1600-metre Mortimor Mechanical /Dunstan Farmers Super Maiden Plate.

Second leg of a winning double for Robb and Ingelse, was the ride “Micro Mikki” (at $4.40) which made it three wins from its last four starts when beating “Miss Capricorn” (Shannen Llewellyn at $8.50) and “Cheap Gas” (Mikayla Weir at $21) in a close fi nish in the 1100-metre McKeown Electrical/Boss Agriculture Class 3 Handicap.

Dubbo trainer, Clint Lundholm, has earned a reputation for winning the last race at meetings in his former home-town of Coonamble, and it happened again on Sunday with “Always Fiorente” in the 1600-metre Swanny’s Foods Benchmatk 58 Showcase Handicap.

Fourth turning for home, Always Fiorente (Clayton Gallagher at $9) wore down “Big Short” (Kody Nestor at $18) to win by over a length with “Margaret’s Missile” (Mikayla Weir at $8.50) a strong-fi nishing third.

The other winner at Coonamble was the Peter Mills, Quirindi-trained “Hollywood Gold” (Shannen Llewellyn in form $4.60 to be the $3.80 favourite) over “Takeover Lad” (Kody Nestor at $4.40) and “Street Swagger” (Wendy Peel at $31) in the 1300-metre Sipcam Class One Handicap.

GERRIES GOLF NOTES

Persistent cold weather reduces player fields

By NORM LEWIS Persistent very cold winter weather that has struck Narromine in recent weeks, has affected the size of playing fields for the weekly Gerries Golf competition.

In total, only six players arrived for the Wednesday afternoon event, with nine on Saturday morning. However, those that did attend, enjoyed playing in the brisk conditions.

Wednesday’s cold and overcast afternoon weather, however, did not affect some very competitive scores with Kevin taking the major prize on 22 points, following last week’s disastrous round.

Three players Ross, Pom, and Ron, then all tied on 21 points for second spot with the count-back declaring Ross the eventual runner-up. Good to see Gus back in action, as he collected the last-place prize on 16 points.

Only one pool game was then played mid-week, which resulted in Pom and

Phil being too good for Ross and Terry, collecting the title of mid-week pool champions.

When Saturday came around, it was cold again, with nine keen golfers tackling the back nine with Pom taking the major prize with a score of 24 points.

Phil took second place on 22 points, leaving Ron to collect last-place with a score of 16 points, and no winners claimed the Nearest-to-the-Pin prize.

Attention then turned to the pool table where two matches were played; the fi rst involved Greg and Terry advancing to the fi nal after they defeated Kevin and Pom. In the fi nal against Ross and Phil, Terry and Greg again proved too good and collected the title of pool champions for the week.

This week’s matches will be played on the front nine on both Wednesday and Saturday.

LADIES GOLF

Jeanette and Vicki win big in 18-hole event

BY VICKI GAINSFORD Last Saturday proved another stunning winter day full of golf, with eight ladies playing nine-holes and four playing over 18-holes.

Jeanette O’Brien took home the nine-hole trophy with 16 points (on a count-back) from Viv Halbisch and Anne Harmer. Vicki Gainsford, meanwhile, won the 18-hole on 32 points.

The nine-hole golf balls went to Viv and Annie and the 18-hole ball went to

Pip Shiffman.

Second-shot Nearest-to-the-Pins were won by Jeanette, Vicki, and Pip, with Gail White and Carol McDonald, coming home with the drawn cards.

In other competition, Carol McDonald, Betty Berryman, and Vicki Gainsford, travelled to Cumnock last Saturday to compete in the Sand Greens Team event, and will also will be competing this weekend in the Dubbo tournament.

By NORM LEWIS Standout feature of the weekend’s golf was the rare feat of a hole-in-one achieved by Tom Hogan on the 18th hole during Sunday’s event.

Congratulations to Tom, who was playing in the Irish Stableford event when he nailed his drive on the last to achieve what most golfers only ever dream of.

For his amazing effort, Tom won the Nearest-to-the-Pin and drawn jackpot prizes.

The Individual Stableford and Round Six of the Club Shootout event, was also played on the Monday of the long weekend, with nine starters and fi rst place going to Tony Harding on 34 points (on a count-back) from Lewis Goodman.

Nearest-to-the-Pin also went to Tony on the 10th, and he took home the Long Drive prize as well.

Last Saturday, the 4BBB Club Trophy was held with 20 players taking to the course and fi rst place going to Lewis Goodman (on a count-back) from Russ Hunt in second spot, (also on a countback), from Alex and Rob Williams, all on 43 points.

Nearest-to-the-Pin was won by Russ Hunt and the Long Drive went to Tony Mann with the drawn jackpot not won.

On Sunday, 14 players took to the course for the Irish Stableford for the James O’Connor Trophy, with fi rst place to Duane Mann on 78 points, second to Tony Harding on 74 points, and the Nearest-to-the-Pin also going to Duane on the ninth hole.

As mentioned, Tom Hogan got his hole-in-one on the 18th, with the Long Drive won by James O’Connor.

This coming weekend is a 4BBB round for an Ag and Vet trophy and, in the Par Plus, for a club trophy.

The Club Championship Match Play fi rst round was also played on the weekend with Lewis Goodman beating Peter Hutchinson by 2-1 and Tony Harding defeating James O’Connor by 7-5. Members are reminded that all fi rst round matches must be played by the end of this month.

Veterans Golf Opens are also scheduled for Albert in July, Gulgong also in July, and Narromine in August.

By SOPHIA MCCAUGHAN After a well-deserved break over the June long weekend, it was full-on netball action in Round Six of the Dubbo Netball Association Saturday Competition.

It proved a mixed bag of results for the Narromine Netballers, but the Wildcats, Stingers, and Fokkers all recorded big wins over the weekend.

The Wildcats made a massive comeback in their Division Three Competition, coming back from a Round Five demolition where they went down to the Fusion Eagles by 45-27.

But the Wildcats will now be roaring with pride after they recorded an impressive 52-20 win against the last-placed St Panthers.

The win now means the Narromine side move up to third on the ladder.

In the D-Grade Competition, the Stingers also enjoyed a massive win after their long weekend break, defeating the seventh-placed St Mistfits in a massive 40-goal victory. The Stingers had also suffered a big defeat in Round Five where they went down to the Merinda’s Warrigals by

50-30. But, it appears that the week-off from netball, served the girls well, as they defeated the St Misfits 64-20.

Spectators at the courts said it was an exciting showcase of attacking prowess and impressive defence that held the Misfits to just a score of goals. The Stingers now move to fifth on the ladder where they sit just behind the Narromine Jets.

Despite their massive Round Five win against the Misfits, the Jets went down to the St Runners in a 35-13 loss at Dubbo Netball Courts.

Rounding out the D-Grade Competition, were the Narromine Hurricanes who also suffered a disappointing 40goal loss against the St Hotshots. The Hurricanes had not played a game of netball together since mid-May in Round Three, and were defeated by the Hotshots 50-18.

In the C-Grade Competition, the Narromine Fokkers have recorded their first back-to-back wins, where they smashed the MAGS Magestics by 46-27. The Fokkers are now second on the ladder after Round Six, just behind the St Hurricanes with only one point between them on the ladder.

In the B-Grade, the Narromine SkyHawks played a nail-biting match of netball where they just lost to the St Snipers with only four goals separating the two teams with the final score finishing at 33-29.

The Narromine Spitfires in Division Four also recorded a loss in Round Six after they went down to the St Hawkes by 37-21.

In the Under 12’s Sky, the Narromine Fireballs recorded a win, and so did the Kittyhawks in the Under 11’s Sky, but the Rockets in the Under 11’s Navy recorded a loss, and in the Under 10’s Sky, the Hornets held-on to finish-up with a draw.

The Under 9’s Grasshoppers also played a fantastic game of netball in Round Six against the St Rainbows with Kristie Mackay telling the Narromine Star that the girls took to the court with energy, enthusiasm, and incredible team spirit.

“All players gave 100 per cent effort, with lots of smiles and energy,” Kristie said.

“They demonstrated fantastic improvement in passing and footwork,” she concluded.

By KATIE MCCUTCHEON Narromine Soccer just enjoyed a fabulous weekend of football with a total of 16 games played ranging from Under 5’s to Under 13’s age groups and playing against Dubbo and Wellington teams.

Also, credit goes to the Narromine players who jumped at the opportunity to fill-in for the Dubbo Bulls team who were a few players short; a true testament of the sportsmanship that we hold dear at the club. All players demonstrated the importance of the willingness to play the game and ensure everyone got to have a run - it was great!

A massive shout-out as well to our Under 6 Rebels, who remain “undefeated” in the competition, with Coach Del White say-

ing that, while it’s all about taking part at this age, the side is, informally at least, still in the winner’s circle.

“We don’t keep score in ‘MiniRoos’ games technically, but we haven’t lost one yet,” Del said.

“The kids are playing their hearts out, and they love it,” she added.

Congratulations to the under 8’s players Elsie, Reed, Ziggy and Lacey who won an encouragement award over the weekend.

First Grade Jets soar as League Tag ladies continue to climb

By SOPHIA MCCAUGHAN Narromine Jets First Grade side soared to new heights after their impressive Round Seven victory at the Town Oval in Baradine over the weekend.

After the break for the the June long weekend, it was time for the boys to hop on the bus to play the Magpies, who sit last on the ladder, at their home ground.

While it was a bitterly cold afternoon for spectators in the grandstand, the winter sun and tough contest, kept the players warm out on the paddock Coach/Captain, Corey Cox again put on an impressive display in the match, scoring the first try and successfully converted 10 of the 11 conversions for Narromine.

four times against the Magpies with fullback Darby Gordon close behind Hellegers in scoring a hat-trick.

scorers for the Jets. The Jets’ were also able to keep Baradine scoreless with fantastic attacking prowess and an exhibition of brilliant defence.

The massive 64-0 win comes after a series of close calls for

the Jets which included a draw against Coonamble where the scores were locked 32-all.

Narromine Jets Secretary, Sophia McCaughan, told the Narromine Star that while the bus trip was long to Baradine, it was worth it for the result.

“The boys have had a couple of close calls in the last couple of rounds, especially in the game against Coonamble,” Sophia said.

“It was good to see them remain consistent throughout the whole game and keep fighting to the very and the fulltime siren,” she added.

Turning to Ladies League Tag, Narromine remain defending champions in the Christie and Hood Castlereagh League Competition, but their first round loss against top-of-the-table, Coolah, may leave them fighting at the end of the season for a

home preliminary final.

Last week, the Lady Jets recorded a confident win 32-4 victory over Baradine. Narromine had an explosive first-half but, with making sure players on the interchange bench got a run around, fell short in the second half where the play became messy and structured.

Reports from the sheds at full-time was that Coach Lily Spackman was proud of the girls’ effort, but knew they need to work on being consistent throughout the full 70-minutes of the match.

Rugby League and Union superstar, Rebecca Trethowan and Coonamble-turned-Narromine Jets, Hannah Towns both scored a double in the win.

Emily Fardell and Haleigh McCarney rounded-out the tryscorers for Narromine with Shian Chatfield successfully converting four of the five tries.

Gorillas remain undefeated in fairytale start to the season

By SOPHIA MCCAUGHAN Mighty Narromine Gorillas continue to roar in the Central West Rugby Union’s New Holland Cup First Grade Competition, with the lads remaining undefeated in a perfect start to their season.

After their June long weekend break, the First Grade and Second Grade sides played against Dubbo Rhinos at Cale Oval in Narromine in their round eight fi xture and, in a tight contest, the Gorillas triumphed the second time round, just edging the visitors by 22-19. It was

a close match, considering their previous Round Three match-up won easily by Narromine 51-14 in Dubbo. The close win against their intertown rivals, the Rhinos, had President Hamish Job telling the Narromine Star that Dubbo put a lot of pressure defensively on the home-side.

“Defi nitely full credit to the Rhinos, they played incredibly well on the weekend and really put some pressure on us to come home with the win,” Hamish said.

“It was good to have a close game and really have our backs up against the wall to fight for a good

win,” he added.

The First Grade Gorillas have now won all of their matches since the season kicked-off back in mid-April, with Hamish of the view that a good pre-season as well as a strong core collection of players, is the key reason why they are top of the table.

“It’s been a good pre-season, and we have managed to keep a pretty solid core group of fellas that have played footy together for the last four years,” he explained.

“That has enabled us to build some key combinations and just everyone playing together for a long-

er period of time.”

Narromine have recorded some big wins throughout the season, with their biggest recorded against CSU Mitchell in Round Two of competition, where they decimated the university club 69-0 at Cale Oval.

The biggest risk to derailing the Gorillas’ season, is if the younger players become complacent as a result of their winning streak.

Hamish said that First Grade Coach, Ivan Truscott’s leadership and discipline, has been guiding the younger players to keep the fi re in their belly.

“Truscott is doing a great job as head coach to keep everybody hungry, to keep players wanting to turn-up, and launching the winds-up to maintain where we are on the leader-board,” Hamish said.

“We don’t want to lose the hunger and we want to keep going on all the way to the very end,” he concluded.

The Second Grade Gorillas also recorded a confident win against the Dubbo Rhinos winning comfortably by 38-22. The Second Grade side now sits second on the ladder, and have only recorded two losses this season.
