By SHARON BONTHUYS Warren Shire is one of 12 local government areas (LGAs) to benefit from the economic and social development work of Regional Development Australia (RDA) Orana.

There’s a lot happening in this space, according to chief executive officer, Justine Campbell, who made a special presentation at the last council meeting on June 26.

The incorporated not-forprofit is one of a national network of 50 RDAs delivering the federal government’s vision for regional Australia. That is, strong connected regions that are resilient and responsive to economic changes, that are inclusive, vibrant, diverse and a space for people, business and investments to thrive, and where First Nations people are engaged and helping to shape the future.

education and training, retail, trade, construction, with emerging industries in renewable energy projects and critical mineral mining.

“We cover 190,000 square kilometres, and currently we

have 54,887 people in employment across the 12 LGAs with a $27 billion output [across the region],” Ms Campbell said.

A demographer recently provided insights into how the region is changing and what this

might look like in the years to come, she added.

“The bulk of the work in this region will be around trades, agriculture and mining,” she said.

The RDA Orana team has spent the past 18 months connecting with the LGAs and local businesses and building capacity, Ms Campbell explained.

The organisation is based at The Exchange in Dubbo, and they run a series of education and training programs from that base and operate a talent bank showcasing regional talent, and jobs board.

Notably, the Australian Company Directors Course will be offered annually in Dubbo, Ms Campbell said, and RDA Orana also hosts the Resources Energy and Industry Innovation Forum, Orana Youth Forum and Inland Growth Summit annually.

RDA Orana also provides the Orana Grants Hub to local businesses, community groups, not-for-profits and individuals, a free service outlining a comprehensive list of grant and funding opportunities available.

Everyone loves a quick tax return, but don’t jump the gun, or you could be regretting your haste, the ATO has warned.

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is asking taxpayers not to lodge their tax returns until their income statement is marked as “tax ready’ and data has been pre-filled.

Waiting until the end of the month to put in your claims for the 2024/2025 tax year is good use of the “precautionary principle”, Assistant Commissioner Rob Thomson said.

Last year, he revealed, a total of 142,000 people who lodged in the first fortnight of July had to lodge amendments or had their returns investigated and amended by the ATO to fix inaccuracies in their tax return, he revealed.

“We know doing your tax return is something to tick off your to-do list each year, but there’s no need to rush,” Mr Thomson advised.

“Best time to lodge is from late July; once everything is ready,” he added.

“We pre-fill information from your employer, banks, government agencies and health funds into your tax return to help you get it right the first time – regardless of whether you use a registered tax agent or lodge yourself,” Mr Thomson said.

Waiting for this information to be pre-filled reduces the likelihood of mistakes or omissions, which can often result in taxpayers having to submit an amendment which can cause issues

Special projects An important project RDA Orana has initiated is The Welcome Experience, a free concierge service where local connectors support essential workers and their families who are considering moving or have made the move to the regions.

Three local “connectors” are based in Walgett, Bourke and Dubbo but RDA Orana is trying to get more, Ms Campbell said, indicating there are currently 52 connectors working across the state in different RDA networks.

Some 65 people were assisted through this service in the last year.

Linked in with this is the important work RDA Orana is doing to support the Orana Designated Area Migration Agreement (DAMA).

RDA Orana holds the fi rst and only DAMA currently in NSW, which covers 60 per cent of the state and includes 53 LGAs across five RDA regions - Orana, Central West, Southern NSW, Murray and Riverina.

“It’s a special agreement that we have with the federal government,” Ms Campbell said.

“There’s a set of occupations that sit in this agreement at the moment, and it allows employers in regional areas in that designated area to look at fi nding a migrant workforce when you can prove you can’t fi nd Australians [for those jobs],” she added.

The DAMA, which is exclusively for businesses, currently includes 129 occupations

and offers a permanent residency pathway for migrants. “[The DAMA] is not a regional migration solution by any means, but has been a pathway for regional employers,” Ms Campbell said, indicating that LGAs have been able to take advantage of this.

The Orana Hunter Golden Highway Transport Study is another of the projects RDA Orana has undertaken, the study crucial to ensuring the Golden Highway remains a reliable and efficient transport link.

“What was found was that there was six times the freight volume that was actually coming through our region,” Ms Campbell explained, indicating there are unique challenges with getting wind turbines into the region from the Port of Newcastle for the Central West Orana Renewable Energy Zone. Warren is just outside the north-west part of this zone.

Support offered The work of RDA Orana is comprehensive and varied. Detailed information is available on the organisation’s website for businesses looking for assistance with fi lling job vacancies, grant and tender writing, data analysis and project management. While some services are free, others are offered at rates lower than the private sector.

Roadworks improving road safety and connectivity across shire

By SHARON BONTHUYS Warren Shire Council currently has 16 projects being undertaken in July as part of its progressive Road Works Program, with two recent additions aimed at improving road safety and connectivity across the Shire.

The council also continues to make strong progress on its road rehabilitation work. Scheduled road works for this week at Boothaguy Creek Bridge Approaches on the Oxley Highway are part of Council’s ongoing program to maintain safe, reliable roads for all road users.

“We thank the community for their patience and understanding as these essential upgrades are completed,” the statement concluded.

Council supports tourism initiatives

By SHARON BONTHUYS Tourism is firmly on the minds of the Warren Shire Council, with the recent announcement of a regional tourism initiative in partnership with two other councils and the production of a quality colour brochure promoting the shire.

The regional tourism initiative, funded through the NSW Government’s Regional Drought Resilience Planning Program - Implementation Phase, will bring together the Bogan Shire, Coonamble Shire and Warren Shire in a partnership to promote local regional places of interest.

The regional tourism initiative is

provisionally titled “Country Heartline (Country Charm, Country Calm)”, the council announced in its recent newsletter.

“The project is designed to strengthen drought resilience and revitalise inland economies, with curated tourism experiences set to highlight wetlands, farm stays and outback towns across the western plains.

“Building on the success of the planning phase, the project will again be administered by the Far Northwest Joint Organisation (FNWJO), ensuring strong regional governance and continuity,” the statement concluded.

The council has also invested in a bright, professionally produced mag-

azine-style brochure called “Discover Warren” which highlights a variety of places to see and things to do in the shire and its communities of Warren, Nevertire and Collie.

The 55-page brochure is filled with fun facts, beautiful imagery, Cultural information, events and local businesses.

“Whomever said ‘it s not about the desination... it is about the journey...’ has clearly never been to Warren or the Macquarie Marshes!” the brochure says.

Copies can be obtained from various locations around town including the WOW Centre and council office.

Inherit the Earth

By HOPE KELLY Jesus says in Matthew 5:5: “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.”

The dictionary definition for ‘meek’ is: “quiet, gentle, and easily imposed on; submissive.”

If the modern world wrote a book titled “How to Inherit the Earth”, they would probably argue that the worst thing you could be is meek.

“Be assertive and pushy about your dreams. The meek ones come last on the race to success.” Meekness goes against the grain of our society; it’s the strong who inherit the earth. But Jesus says the opposite.

What does a meek person look like?

Children and vulnerable people are often meek. How does this quality help us to inherit the earth?

Imagine a powerful but heirless king throws a massive banquet. He calls his two highest advisors into his throne room and requests that they help the scullery maids during the banquet as they will be overworked.

The first advisor is outraged.

“You have never treated me as I deserved! Do I not rank far higher than a simple maid? Have I not a right to my rank and station?”

In comparison, the second advisor meekly does as the king asks. During the banquet, the second advisor is never seen – getting on with the task at hand. The first advisor disregards the king’s request and attends the banquet with the other nobles, as befits his station.

At the end of the banquet, the king makes both advisors stand before all the guests. The first advisor is stripped of his rank for disobeying his king’s orders. The second is named heir to the kingdom. What use is assertion of rights when dealing with a powerful king? Meekness finds its rightful place when dealing with rightful authority.

ROY’S ROUND-UP Comment by ROY BUTLER, State Member for Barwon

G’day folks, The last sitting week in June was an eventful one, and last week, I was back out on the road again. This time out to Cobar, Bourke, Brewarrina and Nyngan, on the road with the Minister for Water, Housing and Mental Health, Rose Jackson, meeting with councils and checking out local water and housing infrastructure.

Budget Wrap Up The NSW State Budget was brought down in the last sitting week in June, and overall, it was good news for the Barwon electorate.

There was a $21 million increase in the electorate specific spending in Barwon, bringing the total past the $1 billion mark for the fi rst time, which is a record.

Among the notable items was the $15 million for the Royal Flying Doctor Service, $12 million to upgrade the Emergency Department at Broken Hill Hospital, and $9.8 million for a new Broken Hill Fire Station.

There is also $33.4 million, for youth diversionary programs, which I had made representations about in the leadup to the budget.

Student Leaders Marine Rescue Launch Program As the co-chair of the Parliamentary Friends of Aquatic Recreation it was good to catch up with Alex Barrell, Commissioner of NSW Marine Rescue.

His organisation has taken delivery of flood boats which can be quickly deployed to help with inland flood emergencies. These trailered boats are built with a shallow draft to negotiate floodwaters and bow doors to allow the craft to beach and take on or offload people and supplies.

Like many emergency services, Marine Rescue have their challenges, particularly costs of training and of keeping assets up to date and well maintained at a time when budgets are tight - things to be discussed with the Emer-

Every year the NSW Parliament runs a program for student leaders to attend parliament to meet with parliamentarians and to learn about the Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council, how government functions, and about leadership.

This year, in the last sitting week in June, students attended from Dunedoo Central School, Lake Cargelligo Central School, Nyngan High School, Condobolin High School, Warren Central School and Gilgandra High School.

As a special treat, I invited all of the students from my electorate to lunch at Strangers Restaurant in Parliament, something I hope to do with subsequent school leaders who visit. We had great discussions over lunch about aspirations, leadership and food (the steak was the popular menu choice).

I thank the students for their company, and for taking on the role of leaders for their peers. I wish them every success for the future. Maybe someday we will see them as leaders in Parliament.

The Parliamentary Friends of Men’s Sheds will allow sheds around the state to showcase some of the work they are doing to Members of Parliament and raise awareness of the positive effect that Men’s Sheds have on mental health.

It will also be an opportunity to raise money for the sheds to ensure that the good work they do can continue into the future.

Workers Compensation Bill Amendment

Coonamble Greyhounds

During the sitting week I successfully amended the Government’s Industrial Relations Bill on workers compensation.

My amendment will require Safe Work NSW to work across the Government to identify industries, professions and workplaces that need more focus and attention, and there will be six-monthly reporting on claims, Improvement Notices and Prohibition Notices by SafeWork NSW. I want to thank Minister Sophie Cotsis for understanding what I was trying to achieve for NSW Workers and agreeing to support my amendments into the Government’s Bill.

Parliamentary Friends of Men’s Sheds I recently convened the inaugural meeting of the Parliamentary Friends of Men’s Sheds, supporting the amazing work done by the network of Men’s Shed’s across the state.

In Barwon there are dozens

It was bitterly disappointing to hear recently that this year’s October long weekend racing carnival has been cancelled by Greyhound Racing NSW (GRNSW).

I have spoken to Minister David Harris to make him aware of my deep disappointment and that of the Coonamble community. There may need to be changes in legislation so that both funding for GRNSW and the existence of the sport are tied to its performance in delivering more events and growing the industry, rather than merely cutting costs by shutting tracks by stealth and backtracking on commitments.

Community events like this are too important to lose. I will keep you updated on any progress.

Cobar Mines The New Cobar Mine celebrated its 21st anniversary while I was there recently.

I joined Aurelia Metals and the Cobar Shire Council for

the celebrations.

We also celebrated the revival of the Great Cobar Mine

by Aurelia Metals. This restart will create 30 full-time jobs and the mine will produce 77,000 tonnes of copper, a mineral that is critical to modern industry and today’s technology, along with 84,000 ounces of gold.

Aurelia aims to open the mine in 2028.

Minister Jackson in Barwon

Last week I welcomed the Minister for Water, Housing, Homelessness and Youth, Rose Jackson, who met members of Cobar, Brewarrina, Bourke and Bogan councils.

There was a lot to discuss across all of the minister’s portfolios. Water loomed large for Cobar Council, with particular discussion of the Nyngan to Cobar pipeline a vital piece of infrastructure, which the minister agreed has to be built and that work on the pipeline has only been paused.

In Nyngan the minister also took a look at the existing water infrastructure but also heard about the need for an emergency water supply bore, which the minister will look into. In Bourke they also discussed ways of increasing the water supply, specifically by increasing the capacity of their weir.

In Brewarrina the minister had time to look at the worldrenowned ancient fish traps and heard about some of the achievements of the council.

I want to thank all of the councils for their hospitality, and I also want to thank the minister for taking the time to meet with Barwon councils.

Qantas hack possibly impacts millions of customers

In a statement released on Wednesday, July 2, Australia’s f lagship carrier revealed it detected unusual activity on a third party platform used by a Qantas airline contact centre on Monday, June 30. It is believed the contact centre is based in Manila, The Philippines.

“The incident occurred when a cyber criminal targeted a call centre and gained access to a third party customer servicing platform,” the statement indicated.

The company took “immediate action” and contained the system, and has advised all Qantas systems remain secure. Additional security measures are reportedly in place to further restrict access and strengthen system monitoring and detection, according to the statement.

“There are 6 million customers that have service records in this platform,” the Qantas statement revealed.

“We are continuing to investigate the proportion of the data that has been stolen, though we expect it will be significant.

“An initial review has confirmed the data includes some customers’ names, email addresses, phone numbers, birth dates and frequent f lyer numbers.”

Qantas confirmed the impacted

platform did not contain credit card details, personal financial information or passport details. No frequent f lyer accounts were compromised nor have passwords, PIN numbers or log in details been accessed, the company indicated.

CEO Vanessa Hudson said Qantas customers would be contacted and provided necessary support.

“We sincerely apologise to our customers and we recognise the uncertainty this will cause. Our customers trust us with their personal information and we take that responsibility seriously,” Ms Hudson said.

“We are working closely with the Federal Government’s National Cyber Security Coordinator, the Australian Cyber Security Centre and independent specialised cyber security experts,” she added.

However, questions remain about the security of information within the nation’s largest domestic and international airline, and what the hack means for ordinary Australians whose names, birthdates, and other highly sensitive personal information has been stolen.

In the Orana Region, Qantas is a popular choice for travellers, primarily through its regional brand QantasLink.

The Qantas website contains a public statement about the incident, lists frequently asked questions for customers concerned, and a dedicated support line for customer concerns. The company insists existing bookings have not been impacted, and will continue to share updates on the matter.

Council meeting wrap up

By SHARON BONTHUYS Warren Shire Council met again on Thursday, June 26, in the council chambers, with the meeting commencing at 8.36am. Cr Andrew Brewer was the only councillor not present, granted a leave of absence. No one attended the public gallery for the early morning meeting.

Pecuniary (financial) interests were declared by the deputy mayor, Cr Sarah Derrett, in the Reports of the Manager Health and Development Services Item Three, Request for Quotation – Final Works on Office Renovations, and manager health and development services Maryanne Stephens in relation to the Sporting Facilities Committee. Both left the room for discussion of those matters.

Audit committee The meeting opened with a detailed discussion about the Audit Risk and Improvement Committee, with general manager Gary Woodman noting there have been no major compliance breaches since October 2023. Cr Derrett raised the issue of a disconnect between information being sought by the committee and what was being supplied by the council,

resulting in a discussion about various issues relating to this and steps council was taking to rectify it.

Showground/ racecourse praised It was reported that three delegations from other councils have been “blown away” by the facilities at the Warren Showground and Racecourse, with the mayor indicating the NSW Governor, Her Excellency the Honourable Margaret Beazley AC KC, was similarly impressed by her visit earlier in the month. He complimented council staff for their diligence and hard work in preparing the site for the wellattended Warren Show and the Governor’s visit.

Cr Pauline Serdity pointed out that directions to the showground could be improved as visitors to the area found it difficult to find their way to the facility - something this journalist could well relate to, having incorrect directions spouting from my GPS as I travelled to the show…

Art recognised The Public Art Committee would like consideration of a sign explaining the significance of the Aboriginal art-

works on the doors of the female-friendly amenities block at Victoria Park.

Airport certification The Airport Operational Committee sought a further report on the Warren Airport’s current status as a registered aerodrome, not a Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) certified facility, and what needs to be done to move forward and become certified.

Public exhibition The draft asset management policy and related strategy was approved for public exhibition, with public submissions encouraged until almost the end of July. Another item currently on public exhibition is the draft Warren local environmental plan 2012 amendments, closing for comment in just over a week’s time.

Remuneration passed What elected representatives are paid to serve on the council is always a subject of interest when the annual question of remuneration is discussed, largely because residents and ratepayers do not have a clear understanding of how remuneration levels are set exter-

nally for local consideration and adoption.

Council adopted the full 3.0 per cent increase determined by the Local Government Remuneration Tribunal for the new financial year, setting the Councillor fee at $11,135.83 and the Mayoral fee at $30,373.53.

Delivery program, ops plan and estimates passed Council adopted the final amended draft of the 2025/2026 – 2028/2029 delivery program and 2025/2026 operational plan and estimates, including revenue policy and fees and charges. Council also formally resolved to make and levy the rates and charges as detailed within the statement of revenue policy to enable the levying of the 2025/2026 rates from July 2025.

With the council required to formally adopt an updated schedule of fees and charges for the new financial year, general manager Gary Woodman expressed frustration with meeting the mandatory timeframes forced on local government areas (LGAs) by the Office of Local Government when the tardiness of some government departments advising the sector impacts the ability

Proposed Nevertire service station not approved

Two years after it was first brought to council, a development application for a service station to be built at Nevertire on vacant land in Trangie Street was ultimately refused on the basis of safety and stormwater concerns expressed by Transport for NSW and the council.

In what has been a longrunning matter, Mayor Whiteley said the council tried to engage repeatedly with the applicant to achieve a positive outcome but this did not eventuate.

Two other development applications for projects in Warren were approved.

We are seeking a Mining Engineer to join our team at Tomingley Gold Operations. Reporting to the Senior Mine Engineer, the primary focus of this role is to support operations to achieve the mine targets and to ensure that the mine plan, designs, schedules and reports are produced to optimise operational and financial targets. This role would suit a Mining Engineer who has completed or is close to completing their underground time and who is seeking to learn a wide array of technical skills in an underground mine.

The role would also fit an experienced engineer interested in expanding their skill set and growing into other opportunities as the mine grows. This role offers exposure to mine automation and the integration of the new paste plant as examples. These are just some of the exciting new directions Tomingley Gold Operations are offering. This role would suit those mining engineers not wanting to be pigeonholed and are looking for exposure to multiple mining disciplines to become a well-rounded Mining Engineer.

The key responsibilities of the role will include: • Drill and Blast Design • Development and implementation of weekly mine plans.

• Undertaking field related tasks as required • Maintain strong working relationships between technical and operational staff.

• Ventilation surveys • Daily reporting and KPI measurement • Underground inspections • Complete mine project work as required • Assist with pastefill engineering work as required.

About You • Tertiary degree in Mining Engineering or similar • 2+ years of underground mining industry exposure is desirable.

• Motivated contributor with ideas on how to implement technology in a new underground mine.

• Some experience with Deswik would be highly regarded; • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills • Current unrestricted Australian Open licence • Civil or Geotechnical Engineers looking to transition into the mining industry are encouraged to apply.

Who? Velseis P.L., contracted by the Geological Survey of New South Wales When? During daylight hours from April to July 2025, weather permitting.

What? Vibrator trucks will generate seismic waves that bounce off rock formations under the ground. The reflected signals are collected by geophones at ground level.

Why? The information will be used to help map geological features up to 40–60 km deep, which will help explorers identify potential groundwater and mineral resources.

Warren Central School’s NAIDOC Week

Looking to the hopes and dreams of young Indigenous Australians, NAIDOC Week at Warren Central School this year involved a number of important events to celebrate the occasion.

Opening of NAIDOC Week 2025 was held at the school on Monday, June 30, commemorating this year’s theme of: “The Next Generation: Strength, Vision and Legacy”.

Activities included a flag-raising ceremony, along with a touching performance by the “Advance Wayilwan Choir” and the school’s junior rock band, “Budjirriwan”, of a new song in Wayilwan language. This performance was sponsored by Warraan Widji Arts and the Aboriginal Children’s Advancement Society.

“Thank you to everyone who joined us on Monday, June 30, for our NAIDOC Week Opening Ceremony and morning tea,” a school spokesperson said.

“It was a meaningful way to begin the week; a special ‘thank you’ to Belinda for the beautiful cake and morning tea, it was enjoyed by all,” they added.

Celebrations continued with a special lunch for students, staff, and community and a typical Australian bush theme for the occasion.

“A huge thanks to Miss Oates and Mr Mackay for organising a fantastic spread, with camp ovens and Jonny cakes,” the spokesperson said.

“We were also lucky to have Steve from the Royal Flying Doctor Service cooking-up a barbecue for everyone. Thank you to everyone who helped make the day a success,” they concluded.

“It was a phenomenal day of school spirit, determination and joy; our students gave their all, cheering each other on, trying their best in every event, and truly living-out our school values,” the spokesperson enthused.

“And now for the results: Junior Champions were Willa Barrett and Joe Steele; 11-Year Champions were Lizzie

Murphy and Hamish Noonan; and Senior Champions were Amelia Williams and Louis Welsh,” they added.

Overall winning “house” for 2025, they announced, was Team Fatima.

“A huge ‘thank you’ to our incredible parent volunteers for their time and support, and to our dedicated staff for their hard work in organising such a smooth and successful day,” the Spokesperson said.

“It was a celebration of community, teamwork, and fun,” they concluded.

Bulldogs Reserve Grade opens account with home-ground triumph

Warren’s Ladies League Tag side at Baradine. The side had a good 20-6 success against Coonabarabran on Saturday at Victoria Oval to now sit in fifth place on the ladder.

By DALLAS REEVES In a great sign for the rejuvenated club’s future, all three Warren sides have now pocketed wins in the Bulldogs’ return to Castlereagh League, with Reserve Grade scoring late to defeat Coonabarabran at Victoria Oval on Saturday, July 5.

Warren Reserve Grade coach, Fred Langby, said the round was a special day for the Bulldogs, with all three grades in action at home.

Reserve Grade started the day with a 16-12 win against

the Unicorns, before Mab Fuller grabbed all four Warren tries in the Ladies’ League Tag’s 20-6 success against Coonabarabran.

While Warren went down 40-16 to the Unicorns in First Grade, Langby said two Bulldogs wins and having a trio of teams play together at home made it an excellent day for the club.

“It was a very successful day, good crowd, and good matches played in good spirit,” he said.

“We all support each other.”

Raced at Nyngan Saturday, July 5 With more than 5000 entry tickets sold, Nyngan Racecourse was packed on Saturday when Blackhill Kitty won the 1250 metres Nyngan ToyotaDuck Creek Picnic Cup. Owned and trained by the Dubbo based Connie Greig, the six-year-old mare Blackhill Kitty had won at Cobar then fi nished runner-up in the Picnic Cups at Mallawa and Talmoi in the lead up to Duck Creek.

Ridden by Todd Bailey, Blackhill Kitty ($2.60 equal favourite) from near last early, took control in the straight and won by more than lengths from stablemate I’m Scarlett (Grady Spokes, $2.60) and the 2023 Cup winner All Words (Sebastian Galea, $6).

Accumulating 58 points so far during the season, Blackhill Kitty is on top of the qualifying ladder for the $50,000 Picnic Championship Final to be held at Dubbo in October.

“That was a turning point,” Langby said.

“It was a tremendous effort and they were very pumped (after full-time). We played exceptionally well.

“I’ve got reserve graders from 17 to 50 and from multiple towns. They are getting to know each other while we play.”

Michael Louie, Mason Budworth-Louie, Richard Glover, Kayden Griffiths, and Bert Bond, were other newcomers to impress.

“Every time he took the ball up or made a tackle, the crowd was right behind him,” Langby said of Bond.

Jets record an improbable victory after sin bins, send offs aplenty!

By BRYSON LUFF Given their relative standings on the Christie and Hood Castlereagh League First Grade competition ladder going into their game against the Dunedoo Swans at Dunedoo last Saturday, Narromine Jets would have been relative short-odds to emerge as the winner.

Those odds, however, would have lengthened somewhat when they had a player sent from the field in the fi rst minute of the game!

Those odds would have edged out a little further in the 28th minute when they had another player sent to the sin bin for a 10-minute spell, reducing them to only 11 on the field.

Mid-way through the second half, punters would have been able to secure a huge payout on the Jets being the winners after they had another two players sent off, with the odds of a victory further increasing when they yet another player in the bin with 12 minutes remaining in the game.

Yet somehow, they did win!

It must be said that two Dunedoo players also cooled their heels in the sin bin mid-way through the fi rst half in what was a match that will be long talked about!

In between all the trips to - and sometimes back - from the dressing sheds, there was some football played and at half-time the visitors were up 1814, with two sweeping backline movements from the Swans just before the break, both resulting in unconverted tries reeling in an 18-6 lead held by the Jets up until the 33rd minute.

Narromine got their second-half off to a great start with when their centre, Washie Itoya, scored his third try for the game in the fi rst minute after the resumption of play. This was very shortly followed up by a try to captaincoach Corey Cox and, with both being converted, the Jets held a very handy 16-point lead.

A dashing 75-metre run by the Swans’ half-back to score after he scooped up a loose ball and score out wide was followed by a great sideline conversion by Ty Sutherland, which took six points off that lead with the scoreboard then reading 30-20 in favour of the Jets.

With 20 minutes remaining and with two more Narromine players ordered by the referee on a one-way journey from the field, this left the home side with a full 13 players on the paddock, with the visitors down to 10, and it seemed only a matter of time before the Swans would get on top.

Not long after the departure of the two Jets, Dunedoo’s winger Jack Guan went over in the corner and another great kick from out wide saw the Swans trail by just four points.

With 12 minutes remaining, the Jets were reduced to nine players after yet another sin-binning and when Dunedoo’s hooker Ta Dermott went over under the sticks from dummy half the Swans had fi nally gained the lead 32-30.

Rather incredibly, the Jets were able

to keep their line intact for the rest of the game and, even more incredibly, they were to complete the scoring for the afternoon when, in the fi nal minute of the game their winger, Charlie Isedale went on a diagonal run from the centre of the field 40 metres out to score in the corner with the Jets recording the most improbable of victories!

Whilst Narromine could be justifiably proud of the win, they would have to be concerned about the lack of discipline shown throughout the match, and they will face a nervous week awaiting the judiciary outcomes as they prepare for the big match against the Coolah Kangaroos this Saturday.

In other matches, the ‘Roos accounted for Cobar by 38-20 at Cobar to continue their unbeaten run, whilst Gulgong held-on to fourth position on the ladder with a 26-10 win over Baradine at Baradine, with the second-placed Coonabarabran fi nishing over the top of Warren and taking the game 40-16 after the Bulldogs had led 16-14 at half-time.

The match of the upcoming round involves Narromine and Coolah clashing at Narromine, with the chance of a Jet’s victory very-much dependent upon how their players go with the judiciary.

The League Tag game at Narromine will also be a Jessica Skinner Challenge Cup match with the unbeaten Coolah Flyers looking to secure the cup from the third-placed Jets.

Gulgong and Coonabarabran will also clash at Gulgong’s Billy Dunn Oval, with a victory for the home side being important in the context of their fi ght to secure a top-five fi nish with just four rounds to be played.

In other games, the Swans will be at home again when they entertain the Coonamble Bears, and the Warren Bulldogs will be heading west to try and topple the Cobar Roosters at Cobar.

Ten dedicated players brave winter chill for July medal

Ten dedicated lady players braved the bitter cold on Wednesday to take part in the 18-Hole Stroke July Medal Round of golf under true winter conditions.

With icy winds cutting through the course, it was a hats-off effort to all who showed up and played. Despite the chill, the course itself was in lovely condition, offering a good run and playing true.

Well done to all who turned out – it was a true test of grit and love for the game!

Bringing in the winning score of 71 (and the medal winner) was Sandie Moore, closely followed by Deb Kentwell on 73. In third spot was Didi Simmons on 75, while fourth place on 77 went to Tish McAlary.

Deb Kentwell won the scratch on 87, and also the Nearest-to-the-Pin on the 16th home.

Upcoming events include the Phil and Josie Cosgrove Trophy Day 4BBB Stableford Mixed Invitation event on Wednesday, and this weekend, the Foursome’s Championships over 36 holes. High-tea, please, ladies!

St Mary’s Emily bags a top four at world’s premier rowing regatta!

Former St Mary’s student, Emily Wise, with her elite Henley Eights Rowing team on the River Thames near London, the team finished top four at the event.

By DAVID DIXON Showing the journeys that life can take us on, a former St Mary’s Parish School student, recently took part in one of the world’s great rowing events in Great Britain.

“How incredible to see one of our exstudents, Emily Wise, competing at the prestigious Henley Rowing Championships in England!” a St Mary’s School spokesperson said.

Emily is a key part of the champion Kinross Wolaroi School (Orange) Girls’ “Eights” team, which ultimately fi nished in the top four at the championships, officially known as the Henley Royal Regatta.

“Emily has already won her fi rst race, and we couldn’t be prouder of this outstanding achievement on the world stage,” the spokesperson said.

“Congratulations, Em; your St Mary’s family is cheering you on from across the globe!” they added.

The Girls Eight eventually enjoyed two commanding wins, progressing to the semi-fi nals last Saturday, July 5, where they faced Shiplake College - the reigning British national champions.

In a thrilling contest, Kinross Wolaroi surged ahead in the opening stretch,

holding a half-length lead through the quarter-mile.

Despite a valiant effort, the Australians were ultimately overtaken, with Shiplake claiming a two-and-a-halflength victory.

“It was an exciting moment for the eight girls from the Central West looking to take out the reigning UK National Champions,” Coach Ben Watt said.

“Top four in the world, looking to make it top two for a historic Sunday spot at the Henley Royal Regatta,” he added.

Held annually since 1839 on the River Thames in Henley-on-Thames, England, the Henley Royal Regatta draws the world’s top crews and is celebrated for its tradition, sporting excellence and social heritage.

Kinross Principal, Dr Andrew Parry, also praised the girls’ exceptional efforts, and also for the the Boys’ Schoolboy Quad team.

“We are immensely proud of our rowers, who have carried themselves with grace, determination and courage on an international stage,” Dr Parry said.

To compete at Henley is an extraordinary honour; to do so with two crews, and reach the semi-fi nals, is truly historic,” he concluded.
