Dear Friends! Over the past year everyone has been complaining about how business has slowed down. But recently I have noticed a real charge and change in people’s outlook. There really does seem to be a positive buzz in everyone’s voice. I have plenty of reasons to feel positive, as we have just moved into our new offices! We really are going great guns. This is thanks to all the support from everyone who advertises in Omni Local.

Don’t forget Mother’s Day on the 10th March! And it’s that time of the year for Comic Relief madness (all in a good cause of course!). If you are doing anything to raise money, let us know and we’ll put it on our Facebook. A great example of this is our friends at Party Bounce. Last year they raised over £1,400!!! They are inflating a giant slide and huge bouncy castle on the 16th of March for the occasion, starting at 11.00am at the All Saints Parish Church in Clarence Street. So take lots of loose change and bounce yourself into giving generously.

Speaking of charity, I would like to congratulate everyone who has raised so much money for Love Kingston. We don’t have enough time to get the final figure of the amount raised for Love Kingston Day in this issue due to our print deadlines, but I have some feedback that it is going to be a big one…..WELL DONE KINGSTON. This is why Kingston is such a wonderful place to be. It’s still not too late to donate! Just check out the Love Kingston Facebook page to find out how you can help.

OmniLocal - Kingston Upon Thames March 2013

The Power of Community I was 9 when I saw men and boys as young as 12 living in concrete huts, sleeping on concrete shelves, herded and beaten by guards with snarling dogs. ‘Who are those men?’, ‘Why are they doing that to those people?,” I asked my father. This was the migrant labour system in Apartheid South Africa, he explained, and we were watching a documentary about diamond mining in Africa. The utter vulnerability and powerlessness of those boys had a profound effect on my young mind. It opened a window on a world so different to 1960’s England that it would stay with me for the rest of my life. I read politics at University and was active in the student anti-apartheid movement, but it wasn’t until I started to volunteer and work for Street Child Africa that I had the opportunity to be really involved and to make a real difference.

COMMUNITY PEOPLE SECTION

Street Child Africa was established by local people in Thames Ditton in 1998 and has grown, with the support of the community, to become a leading and highly respected UK Charity working with African street children. It works through 12 African partner agencies in 8 Sub-Saharan African countries addressing the needs of the most vulnerable children in their communities - children who are displaced and homeless, working, living and sleeping on the streets. In recognition of Street Child Africa’s collaborative work, it was recently awarded a Comic Relief grant to support the development of a network of organisations working with street children in Senegal. Street Child Africa has also been chosen as the Kingston Chamber of Commerce’s 2013 Charity. It is a local success story, a credit to the local community and the quality of its African partners.

Street Child Africa is working with Bentalls, the Kingston Chamber of Commerce and businesses in Kingston to promote ‘Bring your Teddy Bear to Work’ day to celebrate the International Day for Street Children on 12th April. To find out more, or to make a donation, please visit:

I have a fantastic, challenging and sometimes daunting role as Education and Community Officer at Street Child Africa, but it is one that speaks to my heart. It directly links me to the documentary I watched with my father and resonates with my belief that it is in working together, through community, that we can make real change and a real difference.

The Mayor’s Charity Trust A Brief Insight

obviously the people who come to help with the children’s play sessions. Here is one family’s story. Sarah, despite being a very busy mother finds time to take part in sponsored events, rally hundreds of family and friends to support and conjure up raffle prizes. Over the last four years she and her family have raised in the region of £9,000! Adam, her husband, joins in by getting sponsored to grow a moustache and encouraging his clients to run a sponsored walk. Daughter Molly gave an assembly at her School about how Yorda supports her sister Poppy. This inspired the children and parents to raise money with a balloon race.

The Community Brain exists to help develop a stronger sense of community by creating events and happenings that allow people to meet and engage together. They help people release their talents and energies and, hopefully, become more involved in their community leading to a more positive attitude. Over the last four years well over a thousand people have participated and many have gone on to become involved in creating, designing and delivering events in Surbiton and Kingston under the banner of the ‘Spirit of Seething’. Charlotte, a volunteer, says: “My involvement with the Seething events has enabled me to grow in confidence and develop many brilliant relationships with incredible people. For me, it is important to offer opportunities for the community to come together and socialise. The events see a wide range of our community in attendance with bright and beaming smiles. Who wouldn’t want to offer their time and see such reactions!? Kingston Carers’ Network works with around 1200 unpaid carers supporting someone in the Royal Borough with a disability, illness or substance addiction. Nita has been volunteering with KCN for about two years, working in several different roles, and is now very involved in supporting fun and social activities for young carers as well as adult carers. She says: “I have really enjoyed volunteering at KCN - it’s been brilliant! I love meeting other carers and helping out and seeing them enjoying the activities. I get so much out of the experience. I am much more confident in myself and have learned new skills. Volunteering has made me happier”. Yorda Adventures provides play and short breaks for children with severe learning disabilities in Kingston upon Thames. Volunteering comes in many forms - most

Natalie Cycles Cuba I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who has picked up this magazine and read my articles over the last couple of months. Some of you don’t know me, but like most people, lives devastated by cancer, either directly or indirectly. Two friends, both in their 20’s, plus their mother are recovering from cervical cancer. What a life shattering situation for the whole family but they are being positive and seem to have turned the corner.

This is when I decided that I would do something to raise money for cancer charities and I was introduced to cycling events for British charities that are supporting women with breast, ovarian and cervical cancer. Last year I signed up for my first challenge, Cycle Kenya, it was a gruelling experience but although I was completely exhausted I felt exhilarated because I felt I had really done something positive. This year my name is down to cycle the 400Km across Cuba to raise money for these three charities. You can help too, without even getting on a bike. Just make a donation on your mobile phone. Text ‘cuba69£5’ to 70070 to sponsor £5 (you can change the amount to your choice). Please, please help a really good cause. Next month I will tell you a little about the 3 charities and the work that they are doing around the country.

Thank you once again! 7

After surviving what seemed to be terminal cancer I'm now in training to swim the channel for children's cancer charity Momentum, who helped me a great deal. I’m currently training and fundraising for a Channel Swim with a view to completing the task in September 2013. So training-wise not much to report on – I’ve just been slogging away what seems like endless hours in the pool every week daydreaming to cope with the monotony of lengths that never change. At least with open water swimming there’s a change of scenery, but I suppose comparing it to pool swimming is like comparing running to doing it on a treadmill. I’ve stopped using my waterproof mp3 player – I have done for a while now as it got pretty temperamental and died on me. As fun as it was to use, it’s better I don’t get too used to training with one as when it comes to the actual swim they are forbidden because they’re seen as a “training aid”. I got to have a look around Kingston Hospitals paediatric ward and see the great work that Momentum has done there. Suffice to say, its changed quite a bit since I was there. The rooms have all been beautifully decorated with hand painted murals by artist Amanda Leggatt. It’s a great feeling knowing that I helped raise the funds for some of the redecorating that had gone on from my Lands End to John O Groats bike ride back in 2010. Being kept in isolation wasn’t fun and was probably one of the hardest parts of dealing with cancer treatment. Patients are kept in isolation if their immune systems are deemed too weak to deal with everyday life – essentially to reduce the risk of contamination from anything else until their blood tests show that their immune system is strong enough to cope. Anyway it was brilliant to see what a great job Momentum had done. Back to swimming now – it’s still too cold for me to be getting any kind of endurance workout in the sea so I’m waiting until April before I can venture into the big blue... can’t wait

POLICE ADVICE NEW DIRECT ROUTE FOR REPORTING FRAUD

EVERY ALLEGATION WILL BE RECORDED

Kingston residents who feel they may have been the victim of a ‘scam’ or fraud now have an immediate route to reporting concerns. The Metropolitan Police Service has become the latest force to join a national government scheme designed to improve the way fraud is investigated. ACTION FRAUD IS A ONE-STOP SHOP Action Fraud is the ‘one-stop’ national reporting centre for fraud, holding primary responsibility for the coordination of the vast majority of fraud and internet crime by dealing with the reporting, collation, and where possible, investigation referrals. To date, it has already helped more than 300,000 people deal with the consequences of fraud and internet crime. They have also taken over 126,000 crime reports since December 2009. When reporting a fraud to Action Fraud, a national crime reference number will be generated and the case will be referred to the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau (NFIB) where it is analysed along with a wealth of additional information from government departments, financial institutions and other large organisations. The NFIB is run by City of London Police - the lead force for fraud in the UK. Having this central collection point for crime reports will enable a much clearer national picture on the main issues and allow seemingly unrelated incidents from around the country to be linked through analysis, which will assist in identifying networks of criminals. Once information has been assessed, the NFIB will then send to police forces or other agencies packages for investigation ONLY where there is actionable intelligence or viable lines of inquiry available for the force to pursue.

9

Every allegation reported to Action Fraud will be recorded and the victim given a reference number. Whilst it will not be possible to investigate every report that comes in, each one will assist the NFIB in building up a clear intelligence picture about fraud and fraudsters. This in turn will enable them help to prevent other people falling victim to fraud and public and private sector bodies to better protect themselves against the threat posed by fraud. Operation Sterling - the Met’s unit that works in partnership with communities and businesses to identify new crime trends, solutions, and share good practice with the main aim of disrupting and preventing economic crime - will continue to inform and alert the public through their fraud alert website (www.met.police.uk/fraudalert) and raise awareness around fraud in general to prevent people from becoming victims in the first place. VITAL TO TAKE ACTION It significantly affects people’s lives so it is vital that we take action to prevent people falling foul of devious criminals. The most convenient way to report to Action Fraud is online. Online reporting of fraud and internet crime is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week through www.actionfraud.police.uk. Telephone reporting is also available on 0300 123 2040 opening hours apply. If a crime is established, victims will be provided with a crime reference number. RING 999 IF IMMEDIATE RESPONSE IS NEEDED If an immediate police response is required, ie. where the suspect is very near and / or the victim is at risk, the public should continue to dial 999. + For further details about Action Fraud please refer to their website, www.actionfraud.police.uk. Further fraud prevention advice and an online version of ‘The Little Book of Big Scams’ can be found at www. met.police.uk/fraudalert.

Home Improvement Spring is Coming

outside of your house. This is the best time of year for changing windows and redecorating the exterior of your house.

If you like most people have got through the winter period and are looking to book your summer holiday but must get those jobs done before the summer arrives, then you need to ensure that you use the top trades people who are local to you. Here at Omni Local we support our local trades people and encourage you to do the same.

While we are on the subject of the exterior, your home can be maintained by someone local who can do all the heavy back breaking work. Replacement of old cracked paving stones can be back-breaking and very time consuming. If you are looking to overhaul completely, getting stone paving slabs or gravelling can be ideal for low maintenance garden areas and you can even make it attractive enough to have seating areas. Your driveway can be resurfaced using a choice of materials from asphalt, pattern imprinted concrete to resin bonded aggregates, which provide attractive parking places for vehicles leaving a nice clean and fresh appearance.

When doing this, make sure the local company you use are qualified trades people to ensure that your work is carried out to the best standard. Having your living room decorated, your driveway paved, new windows or doors fitted, your garden remodelled, a new roof fitted or new solid wood doors installed, using someone local is the best way of finding an experienced trades person.

Getting someone in to overhaul your garden is a real treat if you are not a gardener. Having someone come in and give your garden a full service this time of the year, allows you more time to do the things you want. Just get a company in to do the dirty work!

If you are selling your home, one of the first things potential buyers will pick up on is the exterior of your house. Old wooden doors that don’t fit well in frames can lead to heat loss and if draughts come in around your frames of single glazing, it can indicate that your property is not energy efficient. Replacement doors can be fitted by door, window and conservatory companies such as the ones advertised in Omni Local. You might also want to consider redecorating the

If you’re planning any tiling work inside, you can achieve a wide range of different looks. Cost can be as much as you can afford. 10

work it could increase the value of your home, through such projects as a basic expansion such as building an extension, converting integrated garages, basements or lofts, building an extra bedroom for your growing family, or even accommodating mobility home alterations. Using a local professional ensures you are getting someone who is not only part of your community but also is a professional. Either way you will need to get quotes or advice about planning permission, and this is where quality builders can help.

You can use low budget tiles such as plain coloured ceramic wall tiles with tile borders to more luxurious ranges of tiles such as slate or natural stone. No matter what your budget can stretch to, if you try and do this work yourself and don’t get it right it will look poor and shabby. Using a LOCAL professional, ensures the job is done right the first time and the right tradesman will give you the best advice on what will look really good.

Let’s not forget about the local electricians! They provide a range of electrical projects, from installation of electrical wiring and systems to replacing old plastic light switches, dimmer switches, outside garden lighting, changing or installing thermostats, to circuit breakers. You must use a qualified electrician for most work. So call someone local who can offer useful advice on the entire spectrum of home electrical work. This is true to say for gas engineers as well. Protection for your home can be provided by professional installers of CCTV, alarms and security.

If the work you are looking to do requires a joiner or a carpenter, there are so many local small businesses who offer various services, from building staircases with new bannisters to hand-making timber windows and frames. Shaving down, sanding and rehanging wooden interior doors and laying new floorboards and wooden flooring can be complicated. Doing this yourself may be more costly. The wrong cut could mean a second, third and most costly visit to the DIY store if you get it wrong. Trust me, it’s easily done!

Gas engineers and plumbers are also the backbone of local tradesmen. Their range of services are so wide and diverse, it would take a whole magazine to give advice about what can be done by these professionals. But anything from a leaky tap, installing a water pump, fitting a shower to servicing or fitting a new boiler. The most important thing you need to know here is if you need a gas engineer make sure the plumber gas engineer is CORGI registered.

Having your own building projects can often be large tasks and make home life difficult and inconvenient. If you undertake any building

What is Double Glazing? In years gone by most people had single glazed windows consisting of just one pane of glass. These windows, with their traditional wooden frames, will eventually need replacing. When the time comes to do this we now tend to replace them with double glazing. Double glazed windows contain sealed units which are made from two panes of glass. These have a gap in between them that provides good insulation against the cold in winter, which helps keep the heat inside the house when you need it most. Single glazed windows are responsible for letting as much as 60% of the heat inside a home escape. Another benefit you’ll get from double glazing is that the glass helps to prevent the majority of condensation that you will typically see on single glazed windows. While the outside tends to be colder, the inside can retain the heat thanks to the double glazing process. Energy efficiency is very important nowadays as we all strive to make our homes as warm as possible for as little cost as possible. Of course it’s not just about money – it’s about the environment as well, and the more we can do to prevent heat loss the more we’ll benefit all round. In terms of windows, we have the window energy ratings to look at. These have been designed to help us choose the best windows for our homes when we have new ones installed. How do the window energy ratings work? The idea is that window and doors are tested to see how energy efficient they are. The ratings go from an A rating – which is the best rating a window can have – to a G rating. Needless to say the G rating represents

14

windows that are the least efficient of all those available. What are the advantages of an energy rated system? The main advantage is that it makes it easy to find the best quality windows to provide energy efficient results for your home. Without the system you would find it virtually impossible to choose one from another, since the visual look of the windows is not much different from each other. You can also enjoy lower energy bills with more energy efficient windows. Modern double glazed units have the ability to keep more heat from being lost from the house itself. They are also able to prevent cold air from getting in from the outside which provide effective insulation against the cold weather and keep your house warmer in the winter months – all without spending more on your heating.

Covering Walls with Canvas

HOME AND FOOD SECTION

If you are looking for home decoration options, there are common questions on making the right decision. What to buy. How do you make sure you don’t waste your money? Will it last for years to come? Going for canvas pictures or printed photos on canvas is becoming more and more popular. It has a superior quality than cheaper prints and is much better than outdated pictures which are often second-hand. With today’s technology and ease of production, most local high street printers can print on canvas quickly and easily. Provided the canvas prints are developed by professional printers or artists they will not fade over time, and you will not lose any quality or appearance after many years. Choice of printing material holds a tight grip and also defines longer life for your canvas prints. A good well painted picture or an interesting photo which is printed on canvas and displayed in the right place in your home should receive welcome comments from guests. Most people desire a home decorated perfectly with expensive items, but if you don’t have huge cash to pay out for artwork then spend money on canvas. Try not to buy online as there are many local art

PFW

shops which offer wide tastes in artwork, and instead of printing a photo on paper go and see a local printer and have it reproduced on canvas. If you shop online, you are not always going to get what you pay for. Sometimes the size and print colour is not what you would expect. Returning and getting your money back can be difficult as the terms and conditions are in favour of the supplier.

The Picture Frame Warehouse New Malden

If you are not aware of quality measurements, always take assistance from a local interior designer, as they are specialized and can easily sort out your issues related to quality of prints if your budget allows for this.

Wholesale And Retail

41 Burlington Road New Malden, KT3 4LP

If you are going to print a photo on canvas using a local printer, they will have advance printing techniques and can offer various designs of prints and produce the finished item in a few minutes, often while you wait. With proper maintenance, a single print developed from superior quality material could last for several years provided it is kept in the right conditions. So what would you prefer, a photo in a frame or a glorious big canvas printed picture hanging on your wall?

The Cooking Corner HALF TERM! COOKING FOR KIDS Caramelised Peanut Chicken Wings Makes 12 wings 1 cup of water 1/2 cup of white sugar 1/3 cup of soy sauce 2 tablespoons of peanut butter 1 tablespoon of honey 2 teaspoons of wine vinegar 1 tablespoon of fresh minced garlic 12 large chicken wings, tips removed and wings cut in half at joint 1 teaspoon of sesame seeds, or to taste (optional) Handful of fresh coriander, or to taste (optional) Handful of fresh spring onion, or to taste (optional)

In a large frying pan over medium heat, mix together the water, sugar, soy sauce, peanut butter, honey, wine vinegar, and garlic until smooth and the sugar has dissolved and you have a smooth thick sauce like texture. Place the wings into the sauce, cover, and simmer for about 30 minutes. Uncover and simmer until the wings are tender and the sauce has thickened which should take about 30 more minutes. If the sauce goes thick before this just thin out with a little more water. During this process keep spooning sauce over wings occasionally. You must make sure not to touch the sauce with your fingers, as it is a hot and sticky sauce. Once fully cooked, pour into a large bowl and sprinkle with sesame seeds. 19

Colour Therapy History Colour therapy is an ancient form of energy healing first recognised by the Middle & Far Eastern cultures. The ancient civilisations used minerals, crystals, gemstones, colour and herbs in both a medicinal and holistic way.

HEALTH AND BEAUTY SECTION

Colour Therapy Today Modern society holds much stress for everyday living and there are many avenues to go down to de-stress. Colour therapy is a safe and gentle way to de-stress the body at cellular level and utilises the energies we live with every day. Science Colour is radiation contained in visible light on the electro-magnetic spectrum. As with all radiation, positive and negative energy is released with the varying frequencies.

Our bodies respond to these frequencies to varying degrees. Aligning our energy centres with the vibrational frequencies of colour can balance our bodies to function harmoniously and aid the release of chemicals necessary for self-healing at cellular level.

Colour therapy can determine an individual’s energies and give a good indication of which colour energy they may be depleted in and help the individual understand why certain behavioural patterns exist, thereby aiding them to counteract negativity of these energies.

Physical Benefits of Colour Therapy Regular balancing of our seven main energy centres will encourage us to display the positive aspects of colour energies, rather than an imbalance which can have a negative effect.

Stress-related illness can be significantly reduced when balance is brought to the body. For instance, if somebody is overloading on red energy without realising it, they may develop high blood pressure and feel exhausted frequently. By examining their diet and the energies surrounding them, blue energy could be introduced to counteract these contributing factors, either by food (internally), topically (externally) or visually (psychologically), and blood pressure can be reduced before it becomes a major health risk.

How Can Colour Therapy Help Me? Whether you suffer from stress-related physical ailments or not, learning colour psychology and how it affects our moods, can give you much more control over how you react to situations. A qualified colour therapist can identify your strengths and weaknesses of energies and teach you how to use energy to reach your full potential.

Kim Ismay proud to support Momentum My mother, who was a fabulous woman and a much loved local drama teacher, said “If you want something done, ask a busy person”. Because of this, I try and cram as much into life as possible.....and I LOVE what I do. I’m fortunate to be able to earn my living doing the things I love best; I’m a stage and television actress currently starring in ‘MAMMA MIA!’ at the Novello Theatre in the West End, a Drama Examiner and Chairman for New Era Academy and a reader for Calibre Books. The harder I work, the more I seem to be able to find time to do other wonderful things. My passion for what I do and my ambition increases, not declines, as I get older. Before this sounds too much like a dodgy dating profile, I’ll get to my point! At the risk of sounding like an inspirational fridge magnet, we all have to remember that life is too short and precious to waste. We’ve all lost someone; parents, grandparents, relatives, friends. People trot out the “Life is Not a Dress Rehearsal” line but it’s true; it’s important to do things that make you happy. Whether as basic as walking somewhere beautiful or coffee with friends, or as farreaching as retraining for a job that truly fulfils you, do things as often as you can to stir your soul. I’m particularly proud to be a Patron of MOMENTUM www.moment-um.org an extraordinary charity which supports children with cancer and other life-limiting conditions in Surrey and South West London. Two other Patrons and I stage and perform in (ever increasingly!!) elaborate one-off shows in May 26

each year to raise money and awareness. The children whom Momentum help are always so positive, so resilient and so full of energy, even when they are terribly ill, that they serve as a touchstone. Kim Ismay will be starring in BACK 2 SKOOL, a Momentum fundraising show on Sunday 5th May, at Holy Cross School, George Road, Kingston upon Thames, Surrey KT2 7NU. Tickets £75 from 020 8974 5931. Momentum was founded in 2004, and has raised £300,000 for projects to enhance the healing environment in the Paediatric Department at Kingston Hospital. They organise treats and outings for children with cancer and life-limiting conditions and have two holiday homes in the New Forest for family respite breaks. For more information www.moment-um.org

Jack The Giant Slayer

This fantasy film finds farmhand Jack (Nicholas Hoult) getting mixed up in a tale which expands beyond the traditional magic beans and giant goose! In this fantastic new adaption, Jack accidently opens a gateway which has been peacefully closed between the fearsome race of nasty giants and the calm peaceful kingdom for centuries. This has an effect including political treachery and an all-out giant invasion. Jack is then dragged into an adventure where Princess Isabelle (Eleanor Tomlinson), is kidnapped and the kingdom is under threat. In this modern futuristic version, we have the pleasure of more than one giant! There is Fee, Fye, Fo and Fumm, along with their unpleasant twoheaded giant leader General Fallon (Bill Nighy and John Kassir). Can Jack redeem himself and become a hero and save the day? It’s a whole lot of fun, and the cast also includes Ewan McGregor as Elmont, Stanley Tucci as Lord Roderick, Ian McShane as King Brahmwell and Warwick Davis, Eddie Marsan and Ewen Bremner.

Toys In The Attic

In this dreamy animated film, the toys in the attic are divided. One is the land of happy toys in the West and the Land of Evil in the East. The supreme powerful Head of State rules over the Land of Evil with his gang of portentous minions, evil insects and rotted vegetables. When the sweet and lovely Buttercup (Vivian Schilling) is kidnapped and held prisoner by The Head (Douglas Urbanski), her life lies in the hands of her friends - a teddy bear (Forest Whitaker), a mechanical mouse and marionette puppet who cross fearfully over the international boundary in an attempt to pull off a daring rescue. 35

Your Garden Hedges This article gives you some fresh thoughts on your garden hedges focussing on creating a more interesting bio-diverse habitat. The word “garden” is actually derived from a Greek term over 2,000 years ago meaning “to enclose an area of land”. Traditionally, this has been done with walls or a living boundary. Today we often tend to concentrate on the interiors of the garden leaving hedges often just as a privacy screen, but maybe we should look at this again with fresh eyes. Hedges can be amazing bio-diverse habitats. They can often be likened to a miniature forest in the sense of having an upper canopy, a dense interior and lower perennials at ground level. A mixed hedge rather than a single species can do much more to enable predators to be hosted that can help deal with your garden pests and create a better balance of life in your whole garden. Hedges in the countryside bring a range of flowers, fruits and seasonal colour through the foliage. We often feel it would be nice to transpose a small piece of this countryside into a small part of our gardens. Research has shown that some countryside field hedges are over a 1,000 years old with an incredible mix of fauna and flora. Even in our housing estates, lines of hedges provide “motorways” for our wildlife insects and mammals to move between foraging areas in a safe environment. What hedges to plant Too often the type of hedge we trim and shape are Privet or Leylandii. These are fast growing evergreen screens and do look neat and tidy with regular work on them, but they are a rather monotonous feature that has less potential for an interesting habitat for our wildlife. Where hedges are planted as a security or privacy screen, then species such as Hawthorn, Holly or Blackberry with their thorns provide an effective deterrent. The hedge does not 37

GARDENING SECTION

need to be more than 3 feet high to achieve the desired result. If you favour a tight-shaped hedge then Yew and Buxus should be your choice, although they are slower growing, they provide the opportunity to experiment in a little topiary with the expert use of clippers and wire framed pre-designed shapes. A mixed hedge If you need to replace your hedge or create one, or even feel that a corner of your garden can be planted as a countryside haven, then consider a mix of evergreen and deciduous species. The list of a possible mix is very extensive. Here are just a few in addition to those already mentioned : Beech, Hazel, Laurel, Cornus, Sloe, Forsythia, Cotoneaster, Euonymus, Field Maple and Viburnum. These can be planted from pots or often more cheaply as whips. Either a trench can be dug or slits cut into the soil to place the whips into gaps and produce a staggered line of varying species. As the season progresses the faster growing species can be cut back to ensure the variety is maintained and the range of colours through the year is appreciated to the full. When to prune hedges Many species are hardy enough to be pruned throughout the year, but most pruning is done in winter and early spring. At RJ Tree Services we use portable scaffold units and orchard ladders to top out and shape tall hedges. We do not recommend the use of ladders leaning into hedges as the likelihood of accidents and a poor cut is often evident.

DIY ROOFING 5 most important tools

DIY SECTION

Here we discuss the aspect of flat roofing. If you are a real DIY fan then roofing is most probably the task that most leave until it’s absolutely necessary and is not a job rushed to because of safety or even vertigo. However if you are still brave enough, keen on your DIY, and you are going to tackle your flat roofing or repairs, then you must first make sure you have the right tools for the job. If you have never tackled this job before then here are 5 important tools for the job: Hand brush - You need a really decent brush as the roof is the place where most of the dust and dirt settles. For this part of the job you need to consider carrying a dust bag or dust pan to collect the dirt. Hand saw - You may need to replace some rotten parts of the roof. This can be either a traditional manual hand saw or an electrical one. Without one, you can’t even start the job. Tape measure - If you are going to have to cut and replace, you will need a tape measure. Just remember measure twice cut once. Hammer - The hammer is absolutely essential. You will need a claw hammer and you will need to use both sides. It’s such a useful tool for this job. You will be removing old nails and replacing them with new ones. Bucket - If you are working on a flat roof, you will need somewhere to put the old and replaced flat roofing. If you are not working near the edge it is much safer to put things in a bucket than leave them laid on the flat roof. You wouldn’t want to trip or step on anything that might puncture the felt. There are many other tools, but we suggest these are the most essential and important! And of course, don’t forget your ladder! 38

If you are an ambitious business owner and want to grow your business, how are you going to do it?

B2B SECTION

The answer is through Marketing. In essence marketing is very simple and can be described by three ‘M’s:

MARKET......... MESSAGE......... MEDIUM Market You must decide who your target audience is - who you want to market to. The biggest mistake is to try and market to everyone. Marketing is all about relevance and no one can be relevant to everyone. So be as specific as you can.

Marketing - The Best Way To Grow Your Business

Message Now you know who you want to talk to, you can tailor your message to their specific requirements. You must demonstrate how your product or service is right for them and why they should buy it from you. But why should customers choose you? You must find a way.
