LOCAL BUSINESS

Jeremy Wadia

Hi Jeremy, so tell us a little about your background and career.

I’m a local guy and was brought up in the area. After uni I joined the Army, serving for nearly 10 years at home and on 3 operational tours reaching the rank of Captain. With two young kids I decided to leave and chose to settle in Surbiton. I then worked in London, for an online games company called Miniclip, but after 8 years was ready for another challenge and I’m now in wildlife conservation.

So why wildlife conservation?

When I left the games industry, as a family we packed our bags and travelled around the world. Whilst travelling I realised how precious our planet is and how lucky we are to have such amazing wildlife! When we got home I met Elliot Newton and Tom Hooker, who I’m now organising WILD Kingston with. Before I knew it, I was volunteering for Elliot in Berrylands and helped him form the Friends of Berrylands Nature Reserve. Two years later, I’m working with Elliot at Citizen Zoo.

Tell us a little more about WILD Kingston

We are so excited about this event! We want to shout above the rooftops about the amazing wildlife across Kingston and inspire more people to get involved, so we thought let’s hire Kingston’s biggest venue! We’ve got some amazing experts joining us and over 20 local community groups involved too. So, for one afternoon, we want the whole of Kingston to join together to focus on nature and wildlife. The event is from 4.30pm so suitable for everyone. You can find out more or buy tickets at www.rosetheatrekingston.org.

And what does Citizen Zoo do?

Citizen Zoo is a local social enterprise focusing on Kingston. There is so much opportunity here to improve our green spaces and biodiversity, and help communities get more involved. We want to rewild people and places! In other words, get more people outdoors, appreciating nature and understanding how to look after our wildlife, and work with communities to make our nature reserves, parks and other green spaces better habitats for wildlife.

Do you have advice for readers who want to get involved with conservation? Firstly, buy a ticket to WILD Kingston as you’ll be able to meet us and loads of other local community groups. Apart from that, drop us an email or follow us on social media, and we can put you in contact with local projects. There is something for everyone.

Do you have any events or projects coming up at the moment?

We’ve got so many exciting projects on the go at the moment. We’re helping to build a new community garden down on Queen’s Promenade, we’re restoring a neglected nature reserve which will be only accessible for those with disabilities or special needs, we’ve got a conservation cattle grazing project in Tolworth and we’ve gained Environment Agency approval to reintroduce water voles back to the Hogsmill River! But our big event coming up is on Sunday 9th June at the Rose Theatre Kingston called WILD Kingston.

POLICE ADVICE

• Sometimes the person is a salesperson trying to sell you home improvements and pressing you to sign a contract on the spot.

Alison McWinnie - MET Police

Scammers will use any means to separate you from your money or your personal data – they even operate on the doorstep! They will do their best to persuade you that they, or whatever it is they are offering you, are genuine – and will usually appear to be polite, friendly, and professional. It can be easy to be taken in by them – after all, they do this for a living!

• Sometimes they claim to be fundraising for charity and request your bank details to set up a direct debit. • Or they might just distract you for a while on the front doorstep while their mate sneaks in through the back door and steals your purse. Top Tips: • NEVER buy goods and services on the doorstep.

However, there are also lots of signs that might indicate that all is not what it seems. Many scams follow certain patterns, and once you know what to look for, they can be easy to spot. Here is one of the most common scams targeted at older people, the Doorstep Scam, and how you can avoid falling victim to it.

• Keep your front and back doors locked, even when you are at home. • Install a ‘spy hole’/ electronic viewer/door chain in your front door so you can see who it is before you open the door. • Don’t answer the door to anyone you are not expecting.

How does it work? Someone knocks at your door and claims to be a tradesperson of some sort. They say they’ve noticed your roof needs patching up, or your trees need pruning, or your driveway needs fixing etc. adding that the work needs doing urgently and that they can do it now for a price. They will even take you to the bank so you can withdraw the money!

• Just say ‘no’. If they persist, tell them to leave or you will call the police. • Remember – reputable traders don’t need to knock on doors to get work. Consider asking friends if they can recommend a trustworthy trader to you.

There are many variations on this type of scam: • The tradesperson will actually do some work, though usually to a poor standard. • They’ll just take your money and disappear.

Queen’s Promenade Friends Queen’s Promenade in Kingston runs along the River Thames, our region’s main nature corridor, between Surbiton and Kingston and was opened by Queen Victoria 1856. In March 2019, after a couple years of informal volunteering, we established a new community group called Queen’s Promenade Friends with help of a local wildlife conservation social enterprise called Citizen Zoo. Our new group currently has three aims: assisting with the maintenance of the Prom, creating a Thames side pocket park for the community and restoring a rundown caretakers hut.

as sending down a hard working crew; Good Gym Kingston cleared mountains of weeds during an evening run; and local Councillor Rebekah Moll has also been really supportive with a generous ward community grant.

Reduce; Recycle; Reuse! The site we are creating a community garden on was piled high with years of green waste and other rubbish. It’s amazing what the Friends have found as they have cleared barrow loads of soil that was suffocating the trunk of a beautiful oak. Under the earth, benches and Victorian ironwork was discovered such as an old promenade post, emblazoned with the Kingston ‘three salmons’. It was so heavy, it took five people to move it! Everyone is keen to recycle these different finds, to restore them to their original glory and then reuse it all in the pocket park.

‘The project has created its own momentum of community spirit which is heartening, positive and inspires everyone involved’, commented Julian Meers, Chair of the new group. Queen’s Promenade Friends are open for anyone to join for free and if any readers come across any of the following please do email the group: railway sleepers for creating raised beds, fencing expertise and corrugated roofing. All donations welcome! They try to meet twice a month at the moment but hope to meet more regularly in the future. Their next volunteer day is Monday 10th June from 10am -2pm, so do drop them a note or pop down on that day to The Prom.

As well as Citizen Zoo, many others locally have come onside with the project too: idverde, the council’s park contractors, have provided equipment and manpower; Nando’s Kingston have been most generous, sustaining the volunteers with Peri Peri chicken as well

You can contact the group by email to queenspromfriends@gmail.com or follow @QueensPromenade on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

chalkstream which runs through Kingston and is the borough’s most important nature corridor. ‘The Hogsmill’ is narrated by the wonderful Griff Rhys Jones and filmed by local Surbiton resident and BBC wildlife cameraman, Tom Hooker, who has worked on a number of high profile wildlife productions such as Blue Planet 2.

Sunday 9th June 2019 will be a momentous day for Kingston’s wildlife, as it is given the biggest stage that Kingston has to offer.

This inspirational event, aimed at all ages and held at the prestigious Rose Theatre Kingston, will also bring together all the incredible communities and Friends Groups across Kingston, who actively work to support and enhance our natural world, demonstrating how everyone can make a real and positive difference to our local environment.

WILD Kingston will be a first of its kind event for the Royal Borough, aiming to inspire hundreds of people to learn more about our amazing local wildlife and engage with conservation opportunities. Guests will experience a high tempo, exciting and educational show with a series of inspirational talks from national experts to local conservationists, who will introduce you to some of the fascinating creatures that also call Kingston home, opening your eyes to a world that surrounds us though is rarely seen. We have got some incredible speakers lined up: BBC wildlife presenter, The One Show “Bug Man” and entomologist George Mcgavin; David Lindo ‘The Urban Birder’, a broadcaster and author who has brought London’s birds to our TV screens on shows like Springwatch and Countryfile; and Derek Gow, who in our opinion is one of the most forward thinking and proactive conservationists in the UK and who will be helping Citizen Zoo bring back water voles to our local river!

WILD Kingston is organised by Citizen Zoo CIC, a local wildlife conservation social enterprise that has been working across Kingston to inspire and empower local people to engage with and improve our natural world. Their work includes educating school children and youth groups about the natural world, restoring neglected nature reserves, mobilising volunteers and organising conservation days, as well as leading corporate rewilding events to assist organisations with their corporate social responsibilities. If you would like to step into Kingston’s wilder side and celebrate our local wildlife like never before, then you can find out more at www.rosetheatrekingston.org

gaudy headwear, wigs and all manner of outfits. All teams are required to raise money for charity through team sponsorship and last year teams raised a total of over £60,000. If teams are not raising money for their own charity, we recommend they support our chosen charity for 2019, Young Carers Project. This charity are dedicated to supporting children and young people in the Borough of Kingston upon Thames between the ages of 5 and 18, who have caring responsibilities for someone at home. They work hard to offer young carers opportunities to access information, advice, support and a break from caring in a safe and positive environment outside the home.

Dragon Boat racing is an exciting and fun-filled event that gives companies, clubs, organisations and other groups the opportunity to put together teams to race in Dragon Boats and raise money for charity. No previous experience is necessary as training will be given on the day. Crews of mixed abilities, male and female, and those with disabilities may take part.

Teams have a great time as you will see from this quote from Pauline Woods of the Born Too Soon charity “Heartfelt thanks to everyone at Kingston Rotary Club. What a fantastic day. Everyone had a great time. We are so proud to be associated with Rotary. Such a great atmosphere and fun for everyone. We cannot thank you enough. Looking forward to next year.” We look forward to seeing you on 21st July as we know it will be a day of great entertainment, excitement and spectacle. It is a fun packed day for all the family where all proceeds go to charity.

The event starts with the first race at 9.30am and ends with a dramatic eight-boat final at approximately 4.30pm. Expect a great day out for all the family with stalls and sideshows, lots of food and drink, plus plenty of space for both team supporters and spectators to watch the racing. LOCAL HISTORY

Father’s Day Mike Seigel - Kingston Tour Guides

Father’s Day falls this year on Sunday 16 June, and so why not treat your Dad to a tour of Kingston’s fascinating history and then lead him into one of the many pubs or restaurants for lunch? eight day fair around the Feast of All Souls on 1 November.

Various fathers and sons have played a vital role in Kingston’s rich and varied history, and two royal pairs appear on the façade above Jack Wills in the Ancient Market Place.

Henry was only nine when his father John died, and some barons favoured handing the throne to Louis, the eldest son of the French King, and invited him to invade. Yet after John’s death they changed their minds and supported the coronation of the young Henry. They took Louis to the safety and seclusion of Ravens Ait where he agreed to the Treaty of Kingston, conferring the throne of England to Henry. Yet Henry, like his father, had a troubled reign and conflict with the barons led to the establishment of Parliament in 1265, just fifty years after the Magna Carta. So not only have these two kings important associations with Kingston but their reigns have left an invaluable legacy to the country.

The first of these are the Saxon Kings: Edward the Elder and Athelstan. Edward was the son of the famous Alfred the Great, crowned king of Wessex around 900, probably in Kingston. He is best known for continuing his father’s work harrying the Danes and reconquering all of England south of the Humber. However, it was Athelstan who pushed English power further, capturing York from the Vikings, and thus gaining the respect of the other Saxon kings so that he is credited with the title of first King of All England. Athelstan had succeeded his father in 924 and we know that he was crowned in Kingston – you can see a replica of his crown in All Saints Church. He was a wise, scholarly man who held high regard for religion as well as being such a successful military commander.

Both John and Henry III feature among the key royals on the Jack Wills façade. If you are interested in learning more about the fascinating history of our town, why not join one of our tours, led by specially trained volunteers?

Less successful a ruler was the Plantagenet John, and yet John may not have been all bad, and he is also known of course for signing the Magna Carta at Runnymede in 1215. This charter was forced upon the King by his barons, but he freely gave two charters to the town of Kingston, the first in 1200 which sadly does not survive, but a second in 1208 which does, and this gave freedom to the town to administer much of its own affairs as well as fixing rents. His son Henry III reinforced this in 1256 with another charter granting the town more freedoms including an

We meet at 11am every Sunday in the summer months outside the Market House in the Ancient Market Place. We make no charge for these tours - but ask for donations towards our publicity expenses. HEALTH & WELLBEING

Keeping Dad Healthy Leanna Carl - OMNI Local

As we’re talking wellbeing, and Father’s Day is in the midst, it might be worthwhile to figure out some ideas on how to help Dad when it comes to his general health and happiness. Some men can find it hard to motivate themselves or find the time to worry about things like exercise and eating right, especially if they have a very demanding job. Perhaps for Father’s Day, instead of spending money on the usual Fathers Day gifts like a tie, some slippers or a nice beer selection, you can help them find ways to improve their lifestyle? For example: Healthy=happy Whether you pool together and get him a fitbit or you simply introduce healthier snacking alternatives into his routines, you could make a difference in his usual pattern for the better. You could even go running with him from time to time and track your steps together. It doesn’t matter how you do it, but showing that you care about his health and want him to be around for a long time could encourage him to really give a healthy lifestyle a go; even if it’s just to spend more time with his kids.

Reminiscing and Re-enacting Remember the things that your Dad used to enjoy doing before work and family life was all that matters. Show an interest in what he used to do for fun, or what he enjoys now, whether it be playing sports, the arts, going to the movies, or anything else within your abilities! Try to recreate those days by gathering the family for a game of football or for a wine tasting - even something as simple as a day out at one of the places he loved to spend a weekend when he was younger could really make his day, and could get him outside and doing some active.

Another way is to actually spend time cooking alongside him and creating meal plans together, so that you both enjoy the benefits and the process of food prepping/planning. Or, alternatively, work with other family members, but introduce your creations to the whole family, so no one feels as though they’re being singled out to eat super healthy. If your schedule is just as tricky to plan around, try introducing new activities and regimes to his friends as well, as having a partner can always make things like this easier to stick with.

If you want to make a regular effort, why not ask for his help in coaching you in something he’s always been good at? Maybe you could regularly meet up in your local park and practice your backhand in tennis, or improve on how you dribble a football? Even if you just want to take a stab at DIY and build furniture together, it gives him time to move around, use his hands and get stuck in, and might strengthen your relationship if you make conversation in the meantime.

IN THE CINEMA Toy Story 4 The toys are back in town! After we left all of Andy’s most beloved companions newly in the hands of an adorable and loving little girl named Bonnie, Woody and the group are surprised to see that she has created a brand new toy. The gang are soon introduced to ‘Forky’, really just made up with a spork and some googly eyes, and Woody (still happily voiced by ‘Castaway’ and ‘Big’ star, Tom Hanks) takes it upon himself to see that Forky fits in. The toys are taken on an exciting road trip with Bonnie, which leads Woody into an unforeseen detour from his family. This detour then leads to a reunion with his long-lost friend Bo Peep (Annie Potts, of ‘Ghostbusters’ and ‘Pretty in Pink’). The two reminisce about the old days, but it is soon discovered that what they want from life is completely different; with Bo seeking adventure in the outside world and Woody committed to

staying with the child that ‘adopted’ him. More adventures befall Woody and friends as they meet more villainous toys and unexpected circumstances lead them into peril. With the return of Tim Allen as Buzz Lightyear, and some new voices in the mix, this addition to the franchise is heartwarming and great fun for the family.

group of teenagers looking for a home that they reconsider what they had in mind.

OUT ON DVD Instant Family This story follows Pete (Mark Wahlberg, known for movies like ‘Ted’ and ‘The Fighter’) and Ellie (Rose Byrne of ‘Insidious’ and ‘Bridesmaids’), a couple who are perfectly content with their lifestyle, until the question of whether they want children is raised. Eventually they start to see the appeal in fostering and adoption, and decide to pursue it in the hope of finding a young child to care for. It’s only when they come across a

First fearing older children (with their strong pre-formed opinions and occasional difficulties) they meet Lizzy (played by Isabela Moner who starred in ‘Transformers: The Last Knight’), a straight-talking, somewhat rebellious 15 year old girl. The two instantly find a chemistry with Lizzy, however they don’t realise that she also has two younger siblings, turning them into an instant family of five overnight. They now have the job of parenting three children and learning the ropes as they go along. This leads to laughter, tears and havoc, as well as a lot of really endearing moments with this unexpected new family. A real family-friendly, frantic story about the ups and downs of an unorthodox, yet loving family unit.

Healthy Muesli

COOKING CORNER

How do you make it?

1. Preheat the oven to 180 C/350 F/Gas mark 4 2. In a large bowl mix all the above ingredients, except for the desiccated coconut.

Leonie Wright - EatWright

This is the perfect breakfast to keep you going all morning, or it can be enjoyed as a healthy snack. Making your own muesli means you can do it your way, in a tastier, healthier and possibly less expensive way!

3. Add cinnamon, mixed spice and olive or coconut oil. 4. Place the mix on a baking tray in the oven. 5. Regularly turn the muesli over.

What do you need?

6. After 45 minutes take the muesli out of the oven and sprinkle with the desiccated coconut. Mix well with the other ingredients and place back in the oven for another 15 minutes.

• 125g gluten free oats or buckwheat flakes • 125g linseed • 125g pumpkin seeds • 100g Brazil nuts, cut into small pieces • 50g desiccated coconut • 3 tsp or more ground cinnamon • 3 tsp or more mixed spice • 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil or coconut oil. • Optional: pure liquid stevia. About 15 drops

7. When the muesli is golden brown, take it out of the oven and let it cool down. 8. The muesli can be stored in a glass jar or airtight container.

GARDENING

Summer Gardening Go-Tos Leanna Carl - OMNI Local

With better weather at the moment and no more blistering cold causing problems for your plants, now is as good a time as any to ensure that your garden is at its best. Below are some ideas on where to start this time of year. Encourage flowering More flowers tends to mean more aesthetic appeal for your guests. That extra sprinkling of colour throughout your garden will help to brighten things up when you’re spending time outside. By trimming away any early-flowering perennials, you will guarantee some lovely late flowerings as Summer comes to a close. Regular deadheading and removing wilted plants will help naturally produce more blossoms. Give them an additional helping hand by pruning after trimming and feed/water as applicable - especially with potted plants, which may not receive as many nutrients.

to trim but would still like a little length, particularly when its drier. Pond and pool TLC If you’ve got a pond, or even a nice swimming pool in your garden, you should try to make the most out of it. These can require a fair amount of care, but regular cleaning is important. Try to avoid letting dead leaves fall into the water, or remove with a net as needed, because this can pollute and disturb your pond environment and will prove an unpleasant task later when found at the bottom of your pool. If you have lilies, keep an eye on their colour, as yellowing leaves should be removed. You may also need to top up the water level of your pond from time to time, however, try to avoid using tap water, as this might upset the natural balance.

Keep your lawn well-maintained Your lawn makes up a large part of your garden, so it’s worth putting in the time. Remember to feed your lawn regularly, even if it means more mowing! It may be worth seeking advice from your local gardening centre or hardware store on the best products if you are unsure. Google is of course your friend if you are uncertain about the consistency of feeding and watering. Most lawnmowers should allow you to raise the blades as well if you need

There are many ways to enhance your garden, and make use of the space, such as cleaning patios, hanging flower baskets, sealing furniture, cleaning bbqs and planting herbs or vegetables, so this summer try to get stuck in and don’t let the space go to waste!

HOME IMPROVEMENTS

Bug Prevention for the Summer Leanna Carl - OMNI Local

Temperatures are warmer and there’s lots to do at the moment - everyone’s looking forward to a warm, fun summer… but, unfortunately not everything that comes with Summer is enjoyable, for example, the creepy crawlies come out again! As it gets warmer, we all want to open the windows and doors more too, which just invites those little pests in! If you’ve already noticed this problem increasing, these tips might be just what you need.

• Make sure to leave things like books on shelves and take care of them, dusting regularly, as this is one of the places you’ll sometimes find silverfish.

Here is a list of ideas on how to keep your home in top shape:

• Sweep, vaccuum and mop your house on a regular basis. If there are any bugs hiding under the sofa or in the carpets, they will be no match for a good hoovering and won’t see much appeal in a squeaky clean floor.

• Remove any spoiled food, crumbs, rotting fruit or pet food that has been left out too long, as they can attract ants, flies and even rodents. Tupperware investments can help a lot here. You should probably try to refrigerate most of your fresh produce during Summer to avoid fruit flies.

• Keep your pets up to date on flea treatments, use flea collars and bathe/groom them when necessary, otherwise you could potentially open your house up to even harder to manage blood-suckers and flies.

• Make sure all wooden surfaces on the outside of your home (such as decking, window frames and doors) is properly treated, as it won’t seem so appealing to any wood-destroying pests, or nesters.

• Consider alternative methods if things aren’t working. This could mean taking natural routes like using oranges and peppermint oil to repel certain insects or it could simply be a case of purchasing different cleaning products you haven’t tried yet. Sometimes it just takes a little spritz of something new to make a difference, regarding these little visitors.

• Keep any worn clothes stored in a hamper with a lid, as the oils and perspirations left in dirty clothes can attract moths. You could also use some mothballs or lavender to deter or keep your clothes in protective bags, particularly natural fibres.

Some insects are little bother, so there’s no need to call an exterminator, whereas others are a real cause for concern. If you do feel like you have a real problem, it is definitely worth calling in a professional.

• Seal any cracks or gaps you’ve ignored, as this could allow insects to get into your home even easier. Make sure to check your vents or crawl spaces as well if you can.

LEARNING

OmniLocal - Kingston Upon Thames • JUNE/JULY 2019

It’s half way through the Summer term – Is it too late to get maths and English help for my child?

will be higher and the work harder in next year’s class. If you feel now that your child needs that bit of extra help, you’re probably right! By getting some targeted help now, your child will probably feel a tad more confident after the Summer holiday. That will get the whole year off to a really good start What about preparing for entrance exams or high grades at GCSE? Again, there’s no time like the present. With the ‘work’ side of the school day easing up to make way for end of year events and more ‘fun’ activities it’s a great way to push on with the learning. At NumberWorks’nWords we can provide an hour or two of challenge per week to help begin preparation for things to come.

Celia Osborne

With school tests and exams over, is there any point in getting a bit extra for my child? Simple answer is YES!! If you feel that your child hasn’t really done that well this year, struggles with some areas in maths or literacy and isn’t as confident as they should be, there’s no time like the present for organising a bit extra to provide a boost. Book a free assessment and introductory session at Number Works’nWords and see what you think.

Ok, what do I have to do? Ring 020 8399 1234 e.mail Surbiton@numberworks.com and have a chat to Celia about your child’s needs. Then pop along for a free assessment and introductory lesson to find out how we can help. It’s easier and more fun than you would think!

Wouldn’t it be better to start in September Well no. It’s so important to have a good start in September and chances are that expectations

COMPETITION REVIEW

Surbeanton in Surbiton Wow, what an artistic and tastebudtantalising breakfast/brunch we had! I would say the best I have had as a restaurant review. Surbeanton is where they bring together taste and health in one meal, using fresh products and all-natural ingredients and presenting them beautifully. But that isn’t all! As a connoisseur of coffee and tea, John the owner has a consistent House Expresso, a blend of Brazil, Colombia, Guatemala and Sumatra, which chains can’t compete with. Every month he changes his 2 single origin beans, which have separate grinders. Also the large variety of tea Bio Organic mixes are unique and delicious. Whether you have breakfast, brunch or lunch; fish, meat, vegan or gluten-free you are in for a treat. (The vegan cheese is home made too).

sour dough was superb, and my Vegan Green Goddess bowl- Avocado, spinach, mango, coconut milk, maple syrup & peanut butter, topped with fresh fruit – banana, blueberries, strawberry, sliced and nibbed nuts, chocolate curls and chia seeds was exquisite. Leftovers are kindly donated to the YMCA.

They certainly lived up to their passion for beautiful flavours, using the finest ingredients, locally sourced where possible and innovative seasonal specialities. The free-range poached eggs, smoked salmon and

The ambiance is lovely, with artwork from local artists adorning the walls, along with greenery artistically placed. It is a secret treasure! Thanks very much to John and his staff for a lovely experience.
