POLICE ADVICE

name and contact details), it doesn’t mean they are genuine. Instead, contact the company directly using trusted methods such as a known email address or phone number.

Alison McWinnie - MET Police

And a very Happy New Year to you!

• Listen to your instincts. If something feels wrong then it is usually right to question it. No genuine organisation will ask you to pay taxes, bills or fees using iTunes Gift Cards, or any other type of voucher.

As I write this column, Action Fraud have issued an HM Revenue and Customs Alert. Unfortunately they have received an increase in the reporting of malicious calls, voicemails, text messages and emails to members of the public purporting to be from HMRC.

• Don’t be rushed or pressured into making a decision. Under no circumstances would a genuine bank or some other trusted organisation force you to make a financial transaction on the spot.

The fraudsters state that as a result of their non-payment of tax or other duty, the victim is liable to prosecution or other legal proceedings such as repossession of belongings to settle the balance but can avoid this by arranging for payment to be made immediately by method such as bank transfer or by iTunes gift cards.

• Report Phishing attempts. If you receive a call, text or email of this nature and have not lost money, report this as a phishing attempt to Action Fraud either by phone or via their website www.actionfraud.police.uk/

If the victim is hesitant or refuses to comply, the suspect makes a threat such as immediate arrest, bailiffs or, in cases where the victim appears to be of overseas origin, deportation.

Sign up to Kingston Borough Neighbourhood Watch today to receive email updates on both cybercrime and other local crime alerts. You will also receive the Borough’s crime statistics showing reported crime on a ward by ward level. Simply email Kingston.NHW@Met.Police.uk with your name and postal address (so we can put you on the correct distribution list).

Often, the period for which the tax is allegedly due is distant enough to guarantee the victim will have little, if any, paperwork or ability to verify the claims. Once the money is paid the suspects sever all contact. What you need to do: • Always question unsolicited requests for your personal or financial information. Save the World Club Save the World Club (www.savetheworldclub.org) is a Kingston-based charity registered for 15 years. We have three volunteer trustees and rely on up to 20 active volunteers. What do we do and why? We actively prevent things from being unnecessarily wasted. We: • run activities to prevent items ending up in landfill or incineration; • We collect and redistribute food and goods to needy recipients to help improve the quality of their lives. We do this in two main ways by: 1. Community Mosaics • We collect waste ceramic tiles, mirrors and beads converting them into beautiful mosaic murals; • We have completed hundreds of metres of mosaics around Kingston Town, like the one in the subway as you walk to the left of Kingston Station; • We have worked with thousands of young people, the police, Network Rail, residents and businesses to design, create and install hundreds of metres of wall mosaics, brightening up areas and eliminating graffiti.

will be installed in March 2019 at the bottom of Sheephouse Way down to the left of the Hogsmill River, under a railway bridge.

At present, we use volunteer’s bicycles and private vehicles to collect good surplus food from Tesco, Lidl, Waitrose, Marks & Spencer. We thank them all for starting to allow us, and other charities, to collect good food waste; • We rely on volunteers to deliver the food quickly to local organisations and people in food poverty

LOCAL CHARITY

Helping to Improve the Mental and Emotional Health of Local Children with Cancer Bethan Jenkins

Children’s Mental Health Week 2019 runs from the 4th - 10th February. Momentum Children’s Charity, a Kingston-based organisation that has been supporting children with cancer and life-challenging conditions for 15 years, is spreading awareness on mental health among young cancer patients. of the music therapy sessions, “Harry absolutely loved music therapy. He had a huge smile on his face during every session. It was wonderful to witness.”

Bianca Effemey, Founder and CEO of Momentum Children’s Charity, says, “When a child is diagnosed with cancer or a life-challenging condition, they can often struggle to deal with the emotional and the physical changes that they find themselves suddenly dealing with. Sourcing support through a doctor or hospital can often take months. We recognised that there was a need for immediate access to a variety of therapy services for all the family.”

The charity has recognised, and recent research has shown, that mental health issues among children who have had cancer can appear years after treatment is complete. Momentum Children’s Charity ensures that they are there to offer support at every step, forever.

The charity’s therapy services programme includes music therapy, play therapy, art therapy, and access to a trained psychotherapist/counsellor. Harry, who was three years old when he was diagnosed with Leukaemia, really struggled emotionally during his treatment.

As part of their 15th anniversary appeal, Momentum Children’s Charity are aiming to raise £20,000 in 2019 for a trained psychotherapist/ counsellor. The objective is to enable more families to access their one-on-one counselling services in their own homes, helping to improve their mental and emotional health. The money raised through the appeal aims to increase the number of children, siblings and parents who benefit from a course of counselling by 30%.

Bianca explains, “He started to lack confidence without his mother there, often experiencing feelings of anger, whilst feeling frightened and upset. We arranged music therapy sessions, one batch during his treatment and a second batch of sessions when he started maintenance. The aim was to help him express his feelings and give him an opportunity to interact with someone else.

To find out more about the charity’s 15th anniversary appeal, visit www.moment-um.org/15appeal, email info@moment-um.org or call 020 8974 5931. Kindly Sponsored by Save the World Club

A new online application form and criteria will be available from Monday 4 February. The deadline for applications is Friday 1 March. Successful applicants will be notified in April. For details please email: grants@lovekingston.org

Read about them on our website: https://www.lovekingston.org.uk/ our-impact/ Going forward, we have a Steering group, new Director, Ambassadors, expert volunteers and another open round of grant applications to be announced soon. There is much work ahead, both exciting and challenging. Join us in our campaign to build a sustainable Love Kingston Charitable Foundation fund for the borough. Love Kingston Day Thursday 14 Feb The purpose of this focus day is to raise awareness and much-needed funds for Love Kingston, a local organisation with big ambitions. GARDENING

Springtime Gardening Leanna Carl - OMNI Local

We haven’t quite reached that ‘spring splendour’ feel just yet, as those wintery days tend to linger into February (give or take) for most of the UK; however, mid-March is supposed to signify the move into Spring and things are about to change. The tough part is knowing what can be done and what will have to wait...Some areas are actually ideal for this time of year, no matter what the conditions, so why not get started here:

perennial plants that have been neglected until now to encourage faster growth and healthier, fuller blossoms when they start to bloom. It’s actually better to do it in the cooler months, and before they start to become unruly, and you should only keep the healthiest pieces.

Lawn preparation For those of you looking to start up a fresh new lawn, you can begin preparing the grounds now. In fact, Greenthumb specialises in those post-winter freshenups (see advert opposite), so get in touch if you’d like some help or advice. If alternatively, you’re looking to do it yourself, ensure that you’ve removed any weeds when digging the area you need. Keep the soil in clods and let nature take care of the rest.

Choosing your seeds/bulbs wisely Take a trip to your local garden centre if you can, speak with someone who knows what will fair well at this time of year. You can even take a walk or drive around your neighbourhood in order to see what inspires you, whether it be conifers, camelias or roses. Snowdrops, sweet peas, daffodils, tulips or crocuses are supposed to be ideal for winter/spring months. If your thing is planting produce however, you can sow beetroot, carrots, peas, cabbages and spring onions – or even tomatoes, cauliflowers and lettuces if you have a cover. It’s also possible to start early planting onions, potatoes and garlic.

Planting early Once you’ve removed any old leaves and debris from your chosen area (and assuming there’s no snow in the way) you can start your planting, as soil can retain some warmth even in the coldest of temperatures. You could start off new hedges or plant shrubs ready for the warmer seasons. Just be sure to do your research on more high-maintenance plants.

Keep your eye out for pests (using natural prevention methods when you’re able to) and always contact a professional when you need advice on garden maintenance, such as Janet Bacon (j.bacon@tiscali.co.uk / 020 8393 7970).

Splitting Perennials You can start digging up and dividing

There’s no theme to this competition. You can enter any piece of art, from GCSE to A Level, IB or Foundation, or indeed any work that you have done at home. KAOS is delighted to declare that registration for Open Studios 2019 is well and truly open! OS19 will be taking place on 8/9th and 15/16th June and is open to any artist or maker living or working in and around Kingston. To take part please go to the KAOS website (see below) and register before the end of February. The Open Studio venues are organised into art trails in and around Kingston, featuring a wide range of 2D and 3D work – painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, glass, photography, digital art, textiles, paper art and mixed media. This is a perfect opportunity to meet local creators, see their work, talk to them about their techniques and inspirations and buy affordable art direct from the artist. If you are interested in taking a look at what is being created on your doorstep please visit the KAOS website and download a catalogue and trail map.

In March, two of our artists are jointly showing in Kingston’s twin town Oldenburg in Germany, while another has been invited to show her work in Venice at the 2019 Biennale. We have various joint shows in Richmond in March, Cologne in April and Bermondsey in July. Valentine’s Day 2019

start, remember that now isn’t the time to be serious. The holiday should be about following your heart and trying to make them smile, without being ashamed of looking silly or cheesy in any way. Put your most lovely-dovey, mushy-gushy self out there and they’ll know that your love for them has been put above anything else. This means you can get something that’s humorous, from a jokey greeting card to something a little more risqué or something sweet and simple like their favourite chocolates or an edible bouquet.

Leanna Carl - OMNI Local

This year, whether you’re in a relationship or not – we hope you’ll be sharing in (albeit, one of the less important holidays) Valentine’s Day this year! Show your love for whoever, even if it’s just a good friend or a family member. There’s no rule that says you should be ‘courting’ whomever you buy that box of choccies or bouquet for.

Alternatively, you can show your really thoughtful side and create a photo album of your favourite photos together, cook their favourite meal, book a seat at the place you had your first date or purchase/craft some sort of keepsake relevant to your relationship like a personalised wall motif or throw pillow. If money is an issue, you could make your own (possibly heart-shaped) confectionery, create a memory book or fill a jar with little notes about why you love them - maybe even write them a poem or song if you’re the creative type. It’s not always seen as cheesy, some of us romantics eat that stuff up!

Sometimes it’s worth that small gesture, or even the excuse to distract a loved one from that bitterness they may feel with something fun. For example, which sounds better: you and your friends or siblings at home alone/ working overtime and trying to forget V-Day exists while watching others gush over their love interests – or, gathering all your friends or siblings for a fun night in/out with a nice takeaway, a movie night and maybe even some gift-giving? Just using the day as an excuse for something simpler and more entertaining will ensure that no one dreads the occasion and nobody gets left out. You’re simply doing it in your own way. After all, we don’t all have the exact same Christmas or pick the same location to celebrate a birthday.

Make this Mothers Day Mother’s Day is coming up this March! Generally, the first main lady in everyone’s life is of course their mothers and it’s important to mark this occasion, especially after all they went through to bring us here! Whether or not your relationship is close or distant, or you’re able to spend the day with her, you can still

dinner or going to a movie/shopping. Or, you could visit her where she rests, bringing her favourite flowers, talking about the good times either between you and her, or with loved ones. Reminisce in the favoured spots you used to love visiting together, such as her favourite restaurants, the parks you used to go to with her as a child, or even take a short break to one of her favourite destinations and bring other family members. You can raise a glass to her, sharing a delicious meal as a family and keeping things lighthearted while sharing your favourite memories. You could even plant her favourite flowers somewhere she loves or write her a letter. Being with people who understand what you’re going through and still finding reasons to laugh and smile will make the day easier.

commemorate the day. For example, if you are planning on seeing her on the day you could:

Bring her favourites

You could get her an item of clothing such as a nice new scarf or top that shows how well you know her – or just make her favourite meal. It doesn’t have to cost the earth either, you can make her favourite meal, or the meal she helped you learn how to cook to show what she’s taught you over the years. Sometimes just your company, and possibly a bunch of flowers, chocolates or a scented candle is very well received.

Make it personal

Give her a locket with the photo of you two in it, or a personalised photo collage with all the family; something she can look at for years to come and treasure for it’s memories as well as the thought behind the gift itself. ‘World’s Best Mum’ gifts of course will probably always go down well, and a message like that is largely recommended, but sometimes that little extra something can really make it a Mothers Day to remember. Homemade baked goods or a scrapbook of your favourite mum moments is sure to get a smile.

Visiting your grandmother or stepmother Not all relationships run smoothly, and not everyone gets along with their stepmothers or has the chance to spend time with their grandparents; but hopefully you can take the opportunity to spend time together and share old stories, even if just for the duration of a cup of tea/coffee and a chat. Spending time with your ‘Mums Mum’ could help you feel closer to your mother as well while you reflect on the good old days, and maybe even look at old photos or create a scrapbook. ZOG

from reality. Through their eyes a multitude of extraordinary characters come to life, ranging from the spoilt American starlet to the English director and the village old timer.

Thu 14 Feb - Sat 23 Feb Based on the best-selling book by Julia Donaldson | Illustrations by Axel Scheffler Large in size, and keen in nature, Zog is so eager to win a golden star at Madam Dragon’s school, where dragons learn all the things that dragons need to know. Zog tries so very hard, perhaps too hard, and he bumps, burns and roars his way through years one, two and three. Luckily, the plucky Princess Pearl patches him up ready to face his biggest challenge yet - a duel with Gadabout the Great!

JASON MANFORD: MUDDLE CLASS

Sun 3 Mar, 7.30pm Presented by Phil McIntyre Entertainments, by arrangement with Lisa Thomas Management He’s back! It’s been a busy few years for Jason since his last smash-hit stand-up show, but fans of his Absolute Radio show will know this nationally acclaimed comedian hasn’t changed a bit. Muddle Class promises to feature a wealth of new material about Jason growing up ‘working class’ then finding, over the years, that part of him has become ‘middle class’ - causing much confusion! Delivered with Jason’s amiable charm and captivating wit, this is a show not to be missed.

Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s much-loved Zog comes to life in a magical adaptation directed by Mike Shepherd, with a sumptuous folk score by Johnny Flynn featuring live musicians. Katie Sykes’ design lifts the book from the page and creates a real and fantastical world. From the team behind Tiddler and Other Terrific Tales and Tabby McTat, Zog promises to be roaring fun for all ages.

NISH KUMAR: IT’S IN YOUR NATURE TO DESTROY YOURSELVES

STONES IN HIS POCKETS

Thu 28 Feb - Sat 9 Mar By Marie Jones | Directed by Lindsay Posner A small village in rural Ireland is turned upside down when a major Hollywood film studio descends to make a historical blockbuster on location. The story is told through the eyes of Charlie Conlon and Jake Quinn, employed as extras along with numerous other locals. As cultures clash, it becomes clear that Tinseltown’s romanticized dream of Ireland is a long, long way

Sun 10 Mar Presented by Phil McIntyre Entertainments Double Edinburgh Comedy Award nominee Nish Kumar is taking his brand new show on a nationwide tour of the UK. The title is a quote from Terminator 2. There will be jokes about politics, mankind’s capacity for self-destruction and whether it will lead to the end of days. Good fun stuff.

IN THE CINEMA LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part Following up on the fun, mayhem (and that earworm!) that came from the original LEGO movie, the sequel has arrived to bring, well, a whole lot more of the same! Five years on from where we left things, the ‘everything is awesome’ feel has slipped away slightly as the citizens now face the threat of invaders from space (in the form of LEGO DUPLO characters). The heroes of Bricksburg are back to save the city from these new visitors who are destroying more than the townspeople can create. The ever-plucky Emmet (voiced by ‘Jurassic World’ and ‘Passengers’ star, Chris Pratt), Lucy (Elizabeth Banks, known for her roles in ‘Pitch Perfect’ and ‘The Hunger Games’) and Batman (Will Arnett, ‘Arrested Development’ and ‘30 Rock’ favourite) must gather all of their other friends on their exploration of new and faraway worlds. This leads to various tests of their courage and skills, an array

of strange and brand new characters and some more catchy songs. The peppy feel and general hilarity is fun for the whole family.

The story follows a country singer named Jackson Maine (played by Bradley Cooper, famous for movies like ‘The Hangover’ and ‘Limitless’) who is struggling to fight a secret addiction to drugs and alcohol. He is supported by his older brother/ manager Bobby (Sam Elliott, known for his role in ‘Road House’ and the recent Netflix series, ‘The Ranch’). After a concert in California, Jackson meets a waitress/singer-songwriter at a local drag bar, named Ally (Lady Gaga), after being mesmerised by her performance. Just as she’s giving up on becoming a singer, he pulls her into the spotlight. The two go on tour together which leads to a more intimate relationship, however they face many ups and downs as he battles his own issues and her career begins to take off.

OUT ON DVD

It’s the perfect combination of romance, chasing dreams and music. There’s a reason there was so much hype about this movie!

A Star Is Born One of the most talked about movies at the end of 2018 can finally be taken home! By now I’m sure everyone is somewhat familiar with the famed ‘Shallow’ song that featured, but if you missed it in cinemas, now you can see how it came to be.

LEARNING

Half way through the school year. Do you really know how your child is doing? Celia Osborne

Homework blues? Does your son pull a long face and struggle with maths homework? Does your daughter do her English, but quite frankly you think it could be better? Do you really have a clear idea of how your child is doing? When you ask, do you just get a chipper ‘fine’ or a grunt in reply? Get an independent view If you have that sneaking suspicion that your child could be doing better, why not pop into NumberWorks’nWords for an independent view?

And the really good news Children that learn with us, love it! No groaning or mumbling. And if that sounds like a breath of fresh air, get in touch.

Your child can have a free assessment in both maths and English and a chance to have a go at some of the structured learning activities that we provide. As an experienced classroom teacher, I can observe them to see whether I think there are gaps in their learning or whether I think they could be achieving more.

Celia: 020 8399 1234 or surbiton@numberworks.com

If I feel our unique structured learning programmes at NumberWorks’nWords would help, I can discuss what we could do to support their learning. But if they are doing just fine, I’ll tell you that too.

Local Trades

LOCAL TRADES

All we want is to help you find them! There may still be a long list of businesses out there who aren’t mentioned in local publications as often. Hopefully we can change that, and help them to show our readers what excellent services are available near them!

We at Omni Local hope you’ll all do your best to support your local businesses whenever possible.

If you know of any LOCAL trades businesses that have yet to feature in Omni Local, and you feel they deserve a mention in our magazine, please do not hesitate to send us their company details. Maybe you’ve used a local service recently and you feel that they should get a mention? If so, please let us know about it and we will do our best to provide support and assist them in promoting their business.

We make sure to back smaller businesses in any ways we can, just as they do for us. Local businesses are crucial in making a more well-rounded, diverse and enriched community; providing excellent service to all Kingston residents. Smaller companies definitely add a more personal feel to the area. All of the great advertisers in this issue are proof themselves that there are so many great businesses in Surrey to contribute to all your needs, providing great service with a friendly manner to everyone in the area.

Shaping up Around the House

HOME IMPROVEMENTS

work on the outside of the house until you’ve removed the clutter on the inside either, as you’ll end up seeing your hard work becoming undone and may feel less motivated to carry on. Keep your supplies stocked Bin bags, rubber gloves, detergents, tape measures, tools, goggles - whatever is required for your to-dos. This may be easier taken care of if you make a list first: jobs that need doing, things you’ll have to buy in order to complete said tasks, and perhaps arrange them by order of priority/convenience so you can stay on track and make things simpler for yourself.

Leanna Carl - OMNI Local

It’s a new year, and a new opportunity to get things running more efficiently and comfortably around the house. After all, a more organised and freshened up atmosphere could contribute to the keeping of New Year resolutions. We work better and keep our bodies healthier when our spaces and our minds are clear, giving us the room we need to exercise and get inspired.

Tougher jobs If of course, you’re unable to see to everything on your list, such as re-decorating and removing scratches in your flooring (whether work is getting in the way or it just seems a little daunting), why not get some help? You can get great, affordable services from friendly local tradesmen when you need; for example, Grant the Handyman takes care of a variety of areas from general renovations to floor-sanding and paint jobs. Find out more from the advert below.

Think inside-out/top to bottom Don’t tackle anything that ends up hindering the next job - think about how cleaning a bookshelf goes - start top to bottom to avoid spreading dust and debris onto the previously cleaned lower shelves. Don’t

Fish! Kitchen Kingston – Restaurant and Takeaway

tastebud-tantalising starter, followed by perfect Turbot and the most tender fresh samphire ever! I missed out as I didn’t try the organic smoked salmon starter, smoked next door – where they have traditional smokeholes and other methods to smoke, salt and cure their own salmon, haddock, cod, mackerel and more! You need to visit a few times to enjoy the selection and their set menu changes weekly. Fish! also offer a variety of quality wines, liqueurs and soft drinks.

We were lucky enough to visit Fish! Kingston and were treated to a delicious – yes, you guessed it, fish meal! With their sister company Jarvis Fishmongers next door serving beautifully fresh fish since 1942 and Borough Market in Central London they certainly know how to find quality responsibly sourced fish and seafood, largely from England, Scotland and Ireland.

Not only a restaurant at the back, they have takeaways, deliveries and happy hour/s from 4 pm to 6 pm: Fish & Chips + beer/glass of wine £14.95. Open Tues – Sat 1200 – 2200. If you prefer al fresco, when warmer they have a terrace outside to enjoy.

It wasn’t easy to decide which of the incredibly varied dishes to choose from the Weekly Set Menu or A La Carte – from grilled Scottish langoustine with chilli & garlic to traditional beer battered fish and chips. The Specials were endless, with healthy grilled options galore – from tuna, swordfish, turbot and sea bass to seafood and diver-caught scallops. The fish! soup with croutons & rouille were an unusual

Well worth a visit. Thanks very much for a lovely evening Lukasz, Sylvester and their wonderful team.
