Knife Crime

POLICE ADVICE

I think my child is carrying a knife. Where do I go from here?

Alison McWinnie - MET Police

Do talk to your child.

As I write this article, knife crime is very much in the news. What is knife crime exactly? Put simply, it is a crime that involves a knife and includes:

Consider mentioning: • The law. The law is unforgiving towards people involved in knife crime, even if the perpetrator is under 18. Perpetrators tried as adults can face up to four years in prison for having a knife in their possession.

• Carrying a knife • Trying to buy a knife if you are under 18 • Threatening someone with a knife • Owning a banned knife • Injuring or fatally wounding somebody with a knife • Intent to injure or harm somebody with a knife • A robbery or burglary where a knife was carried as a weapon

• Personal safety. Carrying a knife creates a false sense of security and strength. Is your child more likely to put themselves in a dangerous situation because of this? • The consequence. Knife crime is considered a violent crime and can severely affect their ability to get jobs. Carrying or using a knife doesn’t just affect that individual. When a knife is used, the individual’s family, the victim and the victim’s friends and family are affected.

Would you know how to spot if your child was carrying a knife? What are the warning signs? Has your child: • Withdrawn from the family unit? • Stopped attending activities which they would have previously enjoyed and could be considered positive influences, such as sports clubs? • Changed their friendship groups or lost contact with old friends? • Become protective and/or secretive with their bags and/or clothing? • Been overly defensive when you have questioned them about their possessions? • Demonstrated a positive attitude towards those that carry knives, for example talking about self-defence?

As I write this article Kingston Police have been conducting weapon sweeps, test purchasing and Knife Arch operations. Throughout the activities conducted, officers have utilised their stop and search powers in order to combat Knife crime. Let’s keep our Borough safe.

• Have you noticed anything missing from your house that could be used as a weapon such as a kitchen knife or screwdriver? • Have you found a knife or other weapon in your child’s possession? • Has your child’s school reported a significant behavioural change? • Has your child’s school reported a decrease in grades or academic achievement?

First year of success for charity that helps people with longterm illness find work A unique UK charity is celebrating its first anniversary with an impressive year of firsts in its mission to help those with long-term health conditions find work. Astriid is a free online job matchmaking service that connects talented people living with any long-term illness with businesses who need skilled volunteers or staff. Its haul of year one milestones include being the first organisation of its kind in the world – committed to tackling the skills gap with the ‘invisible talent pool’ of chronically ill professionals, winning its first national accolade to become Recruiter Magazine’s Charity of the Year 2018, registering its first 500 candidates and 200 businesses, and the creation of 93 flexible roles, thanks to the companies who have registered with Astriid.

year, the charity has high hopes for its fundraising activities this year. Steve Shutts, brother of David Shutts and Chairman at Astriid said: “As a charity, Astriid encourages people to think about their knowledge by using their existing experience to try something new. We don’t pigeon-hole our members. As such, they have a chance to find a satisfying job in an area that’s personally rewarding, start a second career or even share their years of experience in a voluntary capacity, as an expert consultant.”

Founded by David Shutts OBE, the charity allows businesses to tap into the ‘invisible talent pool’. David set up Astriid after being diagnosed with inoperable stage 4 renal cancer in 2015.

With the support of the CBI - the UK’s premier business organisation and the Prime Minister’s Special Advisor, Jimmy Mcloughlin, backing the charity and its mission, Astriid says its job seekers can provide much-needed solutions at a time of UK-wide skill shortages.

A former Royal Navy Commander, David’s diagnosis was life-changing and an experience that made him aware of how much work offers in terms of self-worth, self-esteem and social interaction – much more than financial reward. David realised millions of others must feel like himself - cast aside because of illness, yet with valuable experience to share and so Astriid was born.

For further information on Astriid, to sign up as a partner, become a member, advertise a position or donate, visit: www.astriid.org.uk/. To stay updated on social media, join the conversation using #InvisibleTalentPool via Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Instagram.

As part of its 2019 appeal, Astriid is holding a series of fundraising campaigns, with the view of hiring people from the ‘invisible talent pool’ directly to the Astriid team. Having raised over £50,000 in its first

‘I owe my career to Rotary’ Janet Bacon - Kingston Rotary

Those were the words used by Chris Basham, a Rotary Foundation global scholar, when he visited the breakfast meeting of Kingston Rotary last month

is to enable Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education, and the alleviation of poverty. During the past 100 years, the Foundation has spent $3 billion on life-changing, sustainable projects.

Chris was hosted by Kingston Rotary in September 2016 having won a Rotary scholarship to study for an MSc in the control of infectious diseases at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

Rotary is well known in Kingston for its annual Dragon boat challenge each July, its community fireworks in conjunction with Kingston Roundtable in November and its Santa Sleigh at Xmas however there is so much more to Kingston Rotary. In addition to those activities it uses its members vocational skills to support schools and colleges with mock interviews CV training public speaking and cookery competitions, winning the Kingston business excellence awards for the its commitment to education and skills.

After he had finished his degree his prospective employers were so impressed with him at his interview that they offered him the position of Research Associate/Project Co-ordinator on a 3 year study programme, to start the next day. Chris has now travelled to Tanzania to set up a research project on the transmission of malaria and he is pictured with his team.

And just in the last month it has raised funds for dementia by organising The Big Sing, a community event and donated funds to the Joel Trust and the Vintage Banquet, two initiatives developed at St Peters Church Norbiton.

Not everyone can benefit from a Rotary scholarship but it shows the impact the Rotary Foundation can have on someone’s life and how that impact can having enduring benefits to medical science. LOCAL CHARITY

“This is freedom” Jeannie Tweedie

These were the words of Abdul, 37, while walking in Wisley gardens with one of our volunteers. Just 18 months ago, Abdul was wondering how to feed and educate his three small children in a refugee camp in Jordan. Today, they are at school and he is working. The fact that this has happened is testament more than anything to his own resilience and strength, but also to the support that he has been given. Elmbridge CAN is a small charity run by volunteers who are passionate about our shared humanity. We believe that we all have the power and responsibility to make a difference to those whose lives have been affected by war and persecution. But we also recognise that this can’t happen without a collaborative, community effort. We facilitate this in Elmbridge - bringing together residents, businesses, community groups, charities and the local authority to help transform the lives of refugees.

arriving through the Syrian Vulnerable Person Resettlement Scheme. • Providing English language tuition. • Offering financial grants to help alleviate hardship and combat social isolation. • Helping refugees who arrive independently to navigate our complex asylum system and find employment. • Organising social events to combat isolation and help with integration. • Raising awareness of refugee related issues. It’s a community effort and we are always looking for help. We urgently need landlords prepared to rent homes to refugee families under the SVPR scheme (the rent is guaranteed by the council). We also welcome help from volunteers, especially Arabic speakers and those with experience teaching English. And of course, we always need financial donations.

Prudential Ride London-Surrey100 is back!

Sunday 4th August 2019 Maria Netley

Love Kingston is delighted to be offered 20 places in this year’s Prudential Ride London -Surrey 100 sportif and we’re looking for dedicated cyclists to help us raise money for charitable causes in our Borough. RideLondon has become an annual fundraising event for many charities as well as a personal challenge for those who wish to follow the 2012 Olympic cycling legacy route.

But a ‘loving Kingston’ resident, I love the excitement that it brings to our town centre and the pride I feel as I travel through it both ways– the only place on the route that is visited twice. This year I am delighted to be riding under the Love Kingston banner raising money for an amazing charity that reaches so many good causes in our borough. Despite the fear of whether or not I will be able to fit in the hours and hours in the saddle, increasing the distance week by week, I know now that the effort will be worth it cycling down The Mall knowing that I will have done a small part toward supporting Love Kingston.

Maria Netley, councillor for Tudor Ward has signed up for this year’s team. Will you join her? Why I am riding for Love Kingston? This will be the 3rd time I’ve ridden the ride 100 (although

LOCAL HISTORY

Summer Pageant Mike Seigel - Kingston Tour Guides

Following the success of two previous pageants, the Kingston Tour Guides put on a summer pageant last August as part of KingstonFirst’s Twilight Market. This time the guides stood outside the Façade on top of the Jack Wills shop where they brought the various monarchs and other dignitaries to life. About 60 people gathered to listen, including the Mayor, Councillor Thay Thayalan, and the Deputy Mayor, Councillor Olivia Boult.

Thames – to distinguish it from Kingston upon Hull. Queen Elizabeth I, Good Queen Bess, entertained the crowd with stories of her childhood and many stepmothers before reading out the charter by which she had founded the Grammar School in 1561, visited by her successor and namesake, Queen Elizabeth II.

Introducing the Pageant was Sophia Duleep Singh, a suffragette who had lived in Kingston at the time the Façade was erected, at the instigation of Jesse Boot, the famous chemist, whose shop it was at the time, and the thenMayor, Dr William Finny. These two appeared in turn to talk about how and why the façade begun in 1909 and took 20 years to complete.

Sophia then introduced Robert Hammond and his wife, whose coat of arms is on the façade. Another whose coat of arms is on the façade is William Cleave and Esther, an old lady who had lived in the Cleave Almshouses since 1669, told of how they came to be built.

The audience was taken back more than 1000 years when King Athelstan stepped forward to point out his father, Edward, son of Alfred the Great, who may have been the first of 7 Saxon kings to be crowned in Kingston. He then showed his own image and described his coronation which undoubtedly took place in Kingston, and then talked of his success in ridding the entire country of the Vikings – which drew loud cheers from the crowd! This had gained Athelstan the title of “First King of All England” and enables the town to boast to be “Where England Began”.

Charles I kept his head while he described the charter that he had granted to Kingston to give it an effective monopoly as no other town within 7 miles could hold a market without permission – which rule survives to this day! Concluding the pageant was Queen Mary, wife of George V, who had visited the borough in 1927 and confirmed its royal status. Queen Mary paid tribute to her royal predecessors for providing such a full and varied history. If you are interested in learning more about the fascinating history of our town, why not join one of our tours, led by specially trained volunteers? We meet at 11am every Sunday in the summer months outside the church gates in the Ancient Market Place.

Next speaker was a Saxon woman called Aelflaed who explained why the emblem of Kingston shows 3 salmon. Aelflaed was followed by King Henry III who made an abject apology for his father, “Bad” King John, but was more positive about his own reign and described how they both gave important charters to the town. He also talked about his great-grandson, Edward III, depicted on the façade, because he was the King who first named the town Kingston upon

The charge is £5 per adult - or you can arrange a special tour for you and your friends at a time to suit you. For further information or to become a guide, please look at our website www.kingstontourguides.org.uk.

ARTS

Print Kingston with KAOS in Eden Walk Supplied by - KAOS

Calling all budding or closet artists aged 5 to 95! After the huge success of our interactive Print Kingston event last year, Kingston Artists Open Studios (KAOS) will again be staging our interactive art event called ‘Print Kingston’ in Eden Walk, central Kingston on 1st June 2019, and at the same time raise funds for the local children’s charity Momentum. Bring a photograph of your favourite Kingston building or landmark, or draw inspiration from one of ours, and join in with the Kingston public to create a rolling piece of public art. Guided by KAOS artists you will be able to create your own unique printing plate by simply drawing into a polystyrene panel with a biro using all your ingenuity and creative interpretation. The next stage will be to ink your plate up using a roller, press the plate firmly (ink side down!) next in line onto the paper and hey presto! you’ll have made your own mark on the Kingston landscape. By the end of the day we will have collectively produced a unique piece of public art that will be exhibited in the borough museums during the following few months. In addition to that, you will be able to make your own print from your plate and take both print and plate home with you.

HEALTH & WELLBEING

Spring Tips for your Daily Routine Leanna Carl - OMNI Local

This time of year, temperatures are starting to raise slightly again, and you may find the issues you were having over the winter season are being reversed. Time to switch things up! For example, colours you didn’t feel right wearing may be better suited now, or dry skin problems may have been overtaken by oily skin problems. Below are just a few examples of making the best out of your makeup and cleansing routines before you head outside. coverage, mattifying foundation/powder. Primer goes a long way as well.

1) Cleanse and moisturise regularly, and consider oil-free products if you find yourself looking a little too shiny. I personally suffer with that shiny t-zone issue a lot more when the weather is warm and it helps to have oil-free makeup, keeping things clean and carrying around a powder compact or blotting wipes for touch-ups.

4) If you’re worried about your hair looking less fresh between washes, consider a little bit of talc or a dry shampoo to pick up the slack. The good news is there’s more call to start tying your hair up or wearing sun hats when it gets really warm, which means you can worry a little less - but for now, a little freshen up can make a difference. Just don’t go overboard!

2) Work colour-correcting concealers into a full makeup look for an even skin tone, as you can disguise those exhausted dark circles or redness of the face by using certain pigments, for example - red tends to combine with and conceal the darker areas, and green helps to rid your face of redness as the colour helps to find your perfect colour match.

5) Remember it’s okay to have a little more of a rosy/dewy glow, especially when it’s warm out, and you don’t always have to look like an airbrushed Instagram model. Comfort is key as well, or you’ll just end up undoing all your hard work. If however you’d like to do a full contour job, try watching a youtube video tutorial to see how, or go by the simple rule: areas you want minimised, almost as if they’re being sucked inward want a darker contour, like below your cheekbones and at the sides of the nose, and areas you want fuller or as if they’re being pulled forward, such as the tip of your nose and apples of your cheeks should have a light highlighter/ blush applied.

3) Try not to go too heavy with makeups as things warm up a lot more. You can still create your usual looks, but just bare in mind that when you sweat, makeup can run and start to look cakey, so sometimes less is more when it comes to your confidence. Try investing in some BB cream or a light

Happy Easter! Leanna Carl - OMNI Local

This time of year, things are usually quite relaxed. There’s no panic about the return to work after a long christmas, no overheating and hopefully less freezing cold mornings and blustery days out. Springtime means the weather isn’t quite ready for hitting the beach, but is usually mild enough to get out of the house a little and enjoy the Easter holidays. There is a lot of meaning behind Easter of course, but many of us can also admit that our favourite part of it all is the chocolate! It’d be rude not to throw in the towel when it comes to diets and strict regimes, at least for the sake of one tasty chocolate egg. This tradition mainly applies to the kids but there is no reason you shouldn’t treat yourself now and then. It has apparently been proven that chocolate can cause a chemical reaction which affects the ‘feel good’ areas of the brain and almost gives you that loved up feeling. Just try not to go overboard of course, as you don’t want too much sugar and fat in your diet. Aiming for real, dark chocolate with more than 70% cocoa solids will be the healthier option, and actually contains a lot of nutrients, as well as less fat. There are even vegan easter eggs you can partake in these days.

could decorate hollowed out egg shells and designate different prizes for each one found or even insert lottery scratchers; or just bake some savoury bunny-shaped biscuits for the kids if that’s what they’d prefer. All you need to do is find a big space with plenty of objects in it, like in the garden, or even around the house, and stash prizes wherever you like! Depending on the age of your egg-hunters, you may need to avoid hiding places that are too good for some, or areas that could prove dangerous for small children. If you’re feeling spirited, there’s nothing wrong with spoiling your adult friends or roommates with a little chocolate treasure hunt either! I’ve been on the receiving end of a spontaneous creme egg hunt in recent years, and we had fun

Have you considered setting up an Easter egg hunt this year for your children? Maybe you could get the neighbours involved, or invite your friends and family over for a proper easter fest? Chocolate isn’t for everyone of course, so feel free to get creative! You

Another thing to recall this time of year besides all the easter fun is that now could be an ideal time to plan your summer holiday. Being one of the quieter months of the year, you should take the opportunity to start saving up (if you haven’t already) for your next adventure. If it’s that dream vacation you’ve wanted to embark on for a long time, or just a day trip on the Eurostar, or even a long weekend in Brighton or Bournemouth -set a date and start a savings account! You don’t want to look back over the Summer and feel like you did nothing with it, and you should always take the opportunities as they come to spend amazing and memorable moments with your loved ones, so get planning!

uncovering them in the oddest places throughout the house. Of course, you can always do as we do at home around easter a simple family gathering over a delicious and hearty roast dinner - all followed by our favourite kind of easter egg. We don’t take much part in themed activities being older now but we do like to keep our traditions up and enjoy the small things. Something else you could considering doing is to create an arts and crafts workshop at home to spend time with your little ones. Show them how to make their own paper maché easter baskets, or decorate their own eggs. You could even create your own chocolate eggs by investing in some easter egg moulds. You may even have some family favourite choccies in the cupboard that could be melted down and recycled into something new. For a simpler method of course, you could decorate ready-made chocolate eggs by sticking cake decorations on them and by using writing icing. If you find yourself with lots of leftover easter chocolates of course, or you’ve been impulse-buying too many treats - don’t throw them out. Again, you can recycle to create something new. Excess chocolate from easter could become homemade baked goods and chocolate moulded confections for a birthday or anniversary.

I love this time of year between April and May, as it isn’t too hot, but there’s usually no chill so strong that it keeps us indoors all the time (not to mention the occasional bank holiday can be appreciated greatly). Sometimes the weather can surprise us - I recall a year where we even had snow as late as April, however, typically it’s a pleasant time to get out of the house and enjoy yourself. Being born in April I actually spent many birthdays at amusement parks and having family days out and I always loved it. Whatever your traditions are and however you spend the Easter break - I hope you all have a lovely one.

GARDENING

April Showers Bring May Flowers! Leanna Carl - OMNI Local

This time of year can be great for your garden, leading to some beautiful floral aesthetics throughout the summer, but there is still some areas of the garden that will require some additional TLC. You should also bear in mind those late frosts that can occur. You should try to cover any tender bedding, or avoid putting it out all together if icy mornings are a concern to you. There are several other areas that could require some extra help, some of which are listed below.

young shoots and flowers like tulips, so try using pet-friendly slug pellets and opt for liquid slug killer to exterminate slugs below the surface. There are always natural methods you can experiment with online if you are concerned about poisonous chemicals. Keep an eye out for snails and pick them off of the leaves of your plants before they do some real damage. It can be useful to encourage birds to catch snails for you. You can use flat stones and accessories to allow them to practice catching them.

Check on your garden tools and furniture You may find that your lawnmower needs servicing and repairing, or that your sprinklers are working. Check that your rakes, shovels, hoes and all your other equipment is rustfree and ready for use too. Don’t forget to tend to your fencing, trellises, benches or garden swings. They may need preservative treatments, upholstering, varnishing or a fresh coat of paint and it will really make a difference to the overall look of your garden for when you’re out there this summer and entertaining friends and family. It could of course just be a case of needing a slight scrub down. Either way, it’ll help make the garden a much more inviting place.

As Things Begin to Grow… Try adding all-purpose fertiliser to your garden before you cover with mulch. If you’ve already begun mulching, try to draw back a little bit to tease the soil and replace with fertiliser. Remove any vegetation and dig the ground over, incorporating as much organic matter as possible. Your daffodils that have come into bloom this Spring may also need some extra care too. Give them a sprinkle of bonemeal or liquid feed, but make sure that you deadhead them first to encourage more flowering. Just remember not to cut off the leaves, as they can help to replenish any bulbs planted afterwards.

Spring cleaning Hoe the edges of your garden, removing all weeds as soon as possible. Bitter cress can be bad enough before it really starts to seed and multiply. You should also try to keep pests at bay, such as slugs and snails. Slugs love

HOME IMPROVEMENTS

Moth Prevention Leanna Carl - OMNI Local

Common moths, or Tineola bisselliella are a growing problem in our country. The tiny larvae cause distress in many households across Britain. This article is focused on their characteristics and aims to show you how to avoid this problem.

(With items made of cashmere and silk, you should wrap them in acid-free tissue or put them in breathable bags). Cedar balls and lavender are a popular natural deterrent. Although, small eggs/larvae will die off but adults can become immune. They’ll also keep your clothing smelling fresh.

The main cause of increase regarding this issue is frequent usage of central heating. According to experts, the warmth gives these moths their ideal conditions for breeding in larger numbers. These moths aren’t attracted to the light, breeding in darker places like cupboards or behind headboards, letting their offspring feast on whatever is nearby. Females are camouflaged, with a silvery-brown colour. They lay around 40 eggs over 3 week periods, though males tend to mate throughout their whole life cycle. The eggs take a few days to hatch, resembling grains of rice. They then stay in their larvae state for up to two years, eating whatever fibres they find. Typically, they have a more refined taste for their fibres, opting for materials like silk, pure wool, cashmere and feathers. This is just a preference of course. With the regular use of central heating, the moths now breed all year round. That is not to say that poor hygiene isn’t another cause of the rise in the moth population.

Don’t let unwashed/unworn clothes pile up. In general, try to keep your house clean and tidy- dust, polish and vacuum regularly. Try unloading some of those extra fibres. Sell, or donate unneeded clothes to charity. When hoovering, remove the dust or hoover bags from the house. The moths can still hatch inside the machine, and they may fly out again.

Ideas on how to manage things: Don’t ignore upholstery and furnishings. Rugs and cushions can harbour eggs so don’t neglect to shake them out too.

Turn off the heating As often as possible and open windows to allow the air to circulate.

Shake out your clothing in the daylight once or twice a month. You’ll disturb the moths and dislodge their larvae. The simplest way to store clothes safely is in sealed, plastic storage bags.

Call an expert! If you’re feeling unsure or unable to find the time, contact your local professional and see if they can help. Don’t allow your home to be invaded by unwanted pests!

LEARNING

It’s the Summer term already – Is it too late to get maths and English help for my child? Celia Osborne

With school tests and exams over, is there any point in getting a bit extra for my child? Simple answer is YES!! If you feel that your child hasn’t really done that well this year, struggles with some areas in maths or literacy and isn’t as confident as they should be, there’s no time like the present for organising a bit extra to provide a boost. Book a free assessment and introductory session at Number Works’nWords and see what you think.

events and more ‘fun’ activities it’s a great way to push on with the learning. At NumberWorks’nWords we can provide an hour or two of challenge per week to help begin preparation for things to come. Ok, what do I have to do? Ring 020 8399 1234 e.mail Surbiton@numberworks.com and have a chat to Celia about your child’s needs. Then pop along for a free assessment and introductory lesson to find out how we can help. It’s easier and more fun than you would think! NumerWorks’nWords, 152 Ewell Road KT6 6HE

Wouldn’t it be better to start in September Well no. It’s so important to have a good start in September and chances are that expectations will be higher and the work harder in next year’s class. If you feel now that your child needs that bit of extra help, you’re probably right! By getting some targeted help now, your child will probably feel a tad more confident after the Summer holiday. That will get the whole year off to a really good start. What about preparing for entrance exams or high grades at GCSE? Again, there’s no time like the present. With the ‘work’ side of the school day easing up to make way for end of year

Oh La La! We visited a very different unique takeaway and small restaurant for you. Oh la la! Cuisine is a very newly-opened authentic French Restaurant being set up by Antonella, known as Nella, and her mother who have previously run restaurants in Martinque and France. Both are passionate about the quality of their food, as we found out.

chocolate fondant and custard. Being BYO alcohol at the moment (until the licence comes through) means it is a good place for a small party or work event – seating approx 20.

We had a difficult decision for the beautiful starters as they offer a traditional selection of soup, moules, quiche, salads and more, but we chose the charcuterie – a variety of delicious meats and pate with chargrilled bread (vegan option available). The French traditional Cassoulet was delicious, as was the succulent Prune Lamb Shank for the main course, accompanied by perfect creamed spinach and dauphinoise potatoes.

It is in a great location to nip to and collect a takeaway or to eat in during lunch breaks for your office (if near the Tolworth Tower or you have access to the A3), or evening meals on the way home from work -as it is on the slip road from A3 Tolworth, Tolworth Rise South with a layby in front or numerous side roads. Thank you Nella for a lovely evening with top quality food, good luck with developing your unique venture!

The Crème Brulee was the most delicious we had tasted for years, along with a mouthwatering
