LOCAL BUSINESS

This Month we are Talking to Grant The Handyman

Supplied by: Grant Fletcher

Q1: Hi Grant, could you please tell our readers about your business? I like to think it ‘does what it says on the tin’ and more. Having someone come into your home is a big deal and I like to make the whole experience enjoyable from first contact, to end result. I’m based in West Tolworth/Surbiton (servicing towns within 10 miles). My customers are typically homeowners, landlords and a number of local property management companies & estate agents. Q2: What inspired you to start this business? There’s a running joke in my family that I played with tools before teddy bears (this may be exaggerated). As a kid in South Africa, I roamed pretty free, building forts in the forest and restoring vespa scooters. I even started a business in fixing computers. When I came to the UK 10 years ago I got involved in IT project management‌.but the call to work for myself, with my hands again led me to what I love doing most: fixing and restoring things to look/feel great again. Q3: What do you enjoy most about your work? I get a real kick from helping people improve their homes. I love challenges that make

me think ‘how are we going to make this work’‌ and then coming to a solution that the customer loves and appreciates. Q4: What services do you offer? I provide a variety of handyman services including: General property maintenance & renovation, painting & decorating, kitchen refits, kitchen cabinet re-spray, wood floor installation (plus restoration: sanding & varnishing) indoor & decking. Q5: Do you have any advice for those looking to get into a similar field? You need to enjoy working with people and solving problems. It’s not a clean job; you will most likely get dirty or have paint on you everyday. Just work hard, be honest and reliable and do what you say you will do, no matter what. This line of work is built on reputation. You’re only as good as your last job, so do it well! Q6: Great! What is the best to get in touch with you? You can reach me on 07879 725754, or facebook.com/grantthehandyman has some photos of the work I’ve done.

COMMUNITY PERSON

Turning Seniors into Super Seniors

Supplied by: Will Taylor

Age is without a doubt, no barrier! That’s the message of David Lloyd Kingston personal trainer Tony Laliashvili. On Friday the 21st of September, Tony invited 35 seniors from the Kingston region to his seminar discussing the physical and psychological benefits his program Super Seniors can offer over 60’s in his borough. “Super Seniors was set up to acknowledge that their are people in our community that seriously care about the health and wellbeing of seniors,” Tony said. Held at David Lloyd Kingston, the day featured presentations from health and wellbeing experts in the Kingston region. Among those present were chiropractor from Irrefutable Health Grant Munro, physiotherapist from Physio and More Ben Wilde and founder of Mealwiz Genair Otoo. With 22,000 seniors in the Kingston region, Tony’s message to attendees was relatively simple. As he explains, it’s his belief that the fitness industry can do and should do more to help those over the age of 60 feel more comfortable about their health and wellbeing no matter their age or physical capabilities.

attention strictly to seniors, it is Tony’s mission to ensure that the large group of seniors in Kingston can become super seniors, and then superheroes!

“I wanted and I still want to show the community that health and wellbeing is important no matter how old you are,” Tony said.

“It’s my dream to create a seniors community that continues to spread the message surrounding the importance of health and well-being,” Tony said.

“Maybe you’d like to fit into your wedding dress again? Or perhaps you just want to keep up with your grandchildren?”

“It’s a dream that is becoming more and more realistic by talking to one senior at a time.”

“No matter the circumstance, I started this company to try and help as many seniors as possible.”

If you’d like to know more about the Super Seniors program, please visit superseniorsfitness.com or email tony@superseniorsfitness.com.

CARE IN THE COMMUNITY THIS MONTH’S

Do you know what vitamins and minerals you need to take daily to have a wellbalanced diet?

CHARITY

Vitamins are either fat or water soluble. The fat-soluble vitamins, A, D, E & K are found mainly in fatty foods and animal products, such as vegetable oils, milk and dairy produce, eggs, liver and oily fish. While your body needs these vitamins everyday to work properly, you don’t need to eat them everyday. Your body is able to store them in your liver and fatty tissues for future use. These stores can be built up so that they are there when you need them. The water-soluble vitamins B & C are not stored in the body and you need to have them more frequently. Generally, they are flushed out of your body within 4-6 hours. These are found in fruits, vegetables, grains and dairy foods. Unlike fat-soluble vitamins, they can be destroyed by heat or when exposed to the air.

7

Supplied by: Jeanne Davey

Fat-soluble vitamins are essential for the normal function of the immune system, contributing to: good vision, healthy skin, iron, metabolism, muscle function, strong bones and teeth. They also contribute to the protection of cells from oxidative stress. Water-soluble vitamins are important in the normal function of the nervous system, supporting the heart, nervous system and your psychological function. Having an understanding of the importance of these vitamins and the absorption of them is really important to have a healthy body.

POLICE ADVICE

The Festive Season is Almost Here!

Supplied by: Alison McWinnie - MET Police

As you get ready to socialise, do spare a few minutes to ensure your home is secure while you are out. Burglars are often opportunistic thieves who prey on houses and flats. They seek out any opening that they can take advantage of, specifically doors and windows that are left open or unlocked or are easy to force. Anything of value that they might spot through a window will only spur them on. But it really doesn’t take much to deter these thieves – just smart thinking. Rob them of the opportunity!

Going away? Here are five tips to help you keep your home and belongings stay safe while you’re away:

Here’s what we recommend you do before you leave home: • Close and lock all your doors and windows, even if you’re only going out for a few minutes • Double-lock any door

1. If you’re off on holiday and wish to post anything on social media, make sure your posts aren’t public and that they’re only seen by your friends

• Make sure that any valuables are out of sight

2. Leave lights and a radio on a timer to make the property appear occupied

• Keep handbags away from the letterbox or cat flap and hide all keys including car keys, as a thief could hook keys or valuables through even a small opening

3. Get a trusted neighbour to keep an eye on your property or join a Neighbourhood or resident Watch Scheme 4. Consider asking your neighbours to close curtains after dark and to park on your drive

• Never leave car documents or ID in obvious places such as kitchens or hallways • In the evening, shut the curtains and leave lights on • If you’re out all day, then it’s advisable to use a timer device to automatically turn lights and a radio on at night • Set your burglar alarm • Make sure the side gate is locked

5. Remember to cancel newspaper and milk deliveries Want to know which crimes are happening in your area? Do sign up to Neighbourhood Watch. It’s free to join – just email Kingston. NHW@Met.Police.uk with your postal address (so you can go on the correct distribution list) Wishing you a very Happy Christmas and wonderful 2019!

• Lock your shed or garage • Lock your bike inside a secure shed or garage, to a robust fitting bolted to the ground or wall, like a ground anchor

LOCAL HISTORY

Summer Pageant

Supplied by: Mike Seigel - KTG

Following the success of two previous pageants, the Kingston Tour Guides put on a summer pageant on Thursday 9 August – as part of KingstonFirst’s Twilight Market. This time the guides stood outside the Façade on top of the Jack Wills shop where they brought the various monarchs and other dignitaries to life. About 60 people gathered to listen, including the Mayor, Councillor Thay Thayalan, and the Deputy Mayor, Councillor Olivia Boult. Introducing the Pageant was Sophia Duleep Singh, a suffragette who had lived in Kingston at the time the Façade was erected, at the instigation of Jesse Boot, the famous chemist, whose shop it was at the time, and the then Mayor, Dr William Finny. They appeared in turn to talk about how the façade begun in 1909 and took 20 years to complete. The audience was taken back 1000 years when King Athelstan stepped forward to point out his father, Edward, son of Alfred the Great, who may have been the first of 7 Saxon kings to be crowned in Kingston. He then showed his own image and described his coronation, speaking of his success in ridding the entire country of the Vikings – which drew loud cheers! This gained Athelstan the title of “First King of All England”, enabling the town to boast to be “Where England Began”.

Elizabeth II. Sophia then introduced Robert Hammond and his wife, whose coat of arms is on the façade. Another whose coat of arms is on the façade is William Cleave and Esther, an old lady who had lived in the Cleave Almshouses since 1669, told of how they came to be built. Charles I described the charter he had granted to Kingston giving an effective monopoly as no other town within 7 miles could hold a market without permission – which rule survives to this day!

Next to speak was a Saxon woman called Aelflaed who explained why the emblem of Kingston shows three salmon. King Henry III then made an abject apology for his father, “Bad” King John, but was more positive about his own reign and described how they both gave important charters to the town. He also talked about his great-grandson, Edward III, depicted on the façade, because he was the King who first named the town Kingston upon Thames – to distinguish it from Kingston upon Hull. Queen Elizabeth I, Good Queen Bess, shared stories of her childhood and many stepmothers before reading out the charter by which she had founded the Grammar School in 1561, visited on several occasions by her successor and namesake, Queen 13

Concluding the pageant was Queen Mary, wife of George V, who had visited the borough in 1927 and confirmed its royal status. Queen Mary paid tribute to her royal predecessors for providing such a full and varied history. If you are interested in learning more about the fascinating history of our town, why not join one of our tours, led by specially trained volunteers? We meet at 11am every Sunday in the summer months outside the church gates in the Ancient Market Place. The charge is £5 per adult - or you can arrange a special tour for you and your friends at a time to suit you. For further information please look at our website www.kingstontourguides.org.uk. Hanna ten Doornkaat goes to Venice

ARTS Supplied by: KAOS

KAOS is delighted to announce that one of their founding members, Hanna ten Doornkaat, has been invited by the European Cultural Centre Foundation to exhibit at the 2019 Venice Biennale. Hanna has lived in Kingston for over 20 years, having earned a BA (Sculpture) from Kingston University and MA (Sculpture) from Wimbledon School of Art (UAL). In 2016 her work was exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and selected for the Derwent Art Prize. In 2017, she was again part of the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition as well as the ING Discerning Eye, Mall Galleries, London. In 2018 she has had a solo exhibition at One Paved Court, Richmond and participated in a group exhibition in Rio, Brazil. She has exhibited in Australia, Germany, Canada and Belgium. For Hanna to take up this invitation, she needs to raise €15,000 as her contribution to exhibit at a prestigious palazzo from May to November 2019. What makes this opportunity particularly relevant and exciting is the Foundation’s aim to show emerging and lesser known artists alongside well known and established names, and to bring together artists of all ages and from different cultural backgrounds. This October, Hanna will again be taking part at the Other Art Fair where she will be showing and selling her work as well as introducing ra e tickets as part of her fundraising campaign. The rst prize will be a unique chance to win one of her artworks. As the value of her work is bound to rise

15

after Venice, this is a particularly attractive opportunity to acquire an original work of art for as little as £2. For those unable to visit the Other Art Fair, Hanna has produced a special edition of small hashtag prints to send to donors of £5 or more through her website at http:// tendoornkaat.co.uk/fundraising-campaign Hanna will be using #SupportWomenArtists #hannatendoornkaat on social media over the next few months as she feels that women are still underrepresented in the art world. Statistics show that when looking at gallery representation, museum collections or inclusion in exhibitions, women’s share is still only around 30% while 60% of art graduates are women. kingstonartistsopenstudios.co.uk

FAMILY ADVICE

Q & A’s with Divorce Consultant, Diana Jordan

Supplied by: Diana Jordan

Q: I want to leave my husband but I’m terrified. He has never been violent but when he shouts in my face I’m scared that he will be and I always feel I’m walking on eggshells. One of the problems is that he is charming and everyone else thinks he’s wonderful, but behind closed doors he’s a different person. I’ve lost most of my friends and rarely see my family because Ray doesn’t want me to. Although we live in a beautiful house I don’t have much money, because my earnings go into our joint account and I have to explain any unusual expenditure. So I would not be able to pay a solicitor and I don’t have any support if I were to leave. But mainly I’m worried about our children. Ray dotes on our son who is 9 but largely

Bo by local Book au author and fo former solicitor, al also available as an ebook on Amazon

ignores our daughter who is 6, unless she irritates him when he will punish her, sometimes quite cruelly. I couldn’t leave my children and I can’t afford to take them anywhere else, so is there any way I can leave or divorce? Jane, Kingston A: It sounds as though your husband could be a narcissist and these are the most difficult people to divorce: often their only aim is to destroy their ex. The biggest question you have to try and answer is whether your husband will want to take the children from you. Many narcissistic fathers do this as they know that will hurt a mother most. Believe it or not (and most don’t until they get there) the family court will not help you or your children, the attitude being “contact with father at all costs”. If you oppose or talk about the abuse, the court is likely to transfer residence to the father. Many mothers wish they had never left as it was easier to protect their children while they were all living together. Your first port of call should be Women’s Aid: they deal with all domestic abuse, not just violence, and will help you find a way forward. Discuss with them whether you should go to the police as coercive control is a criminal offence. They may also help you to get an occupation order if you decide to go to court to get your husband out of the house.

SPECIAL FEATURE Time to get Festive! The next few months are going to be filled with love, laughter, lights...and potentially stress, spending and sniffles! Hopefully you’ll be able to focus on the former - but inevitably, now is going to be a busy time. I personally am usually able to overlook the hustle and bustle to spend more time with family and friends. I don’t know why, but I adore this time of year. Things can go wrong, and sadly sometimes it’s harder to guarantee that everyone gets the chance to spend the holidays with you, but the fact that everyone is trying to make things special and being more generous and loving towards one another is really uplifting. Try to focus on family Make great memories, take lots of photos and get as many of your loved ones around as you can. It won’t feel like such a chore to put Christmas together once they’re there. Don’t let embarrassment get in the way of silly home videos and unflattering shots of you round the dinner table and spilling your prosecco in the late hours. You’ll be glad to have these moments captured later in life, particularly when your family and friends can no longer make it to yours for the holidays. Keep things jolly with some quizzes, board games and party favourites - get silly just once a year (or more, if you’re anything like my karaoke-loving, quiz-mad family!). Laugh, sing and dance with

the people you love and all your worries will fade. Sure, there may be the occasional debate over someone cheating during gameplay or tantrums from the little ones if they don’t get the exact gift they had in mind, but these are just passing problems that shrink away when you all watch Christmas movies together or tuck into your delicious feast. Money shouldn’t be at the forefront of your mind If you’re worried about having to shop for so many people, why not arrange a secret santa? I’m sure many of your family members and friends have the same concerns when it comes to money. It isn’t all about spending as much as you can to show your love either. The thought behind any gift really does count for a lot. No one can deny that warm feeling they get knowing someone remembered why certain items hold importance to them or having someone put effort into a gift with your interests and emotions in mind.

SPECIAL FEATURE dreading every part that can go wrong. Even if it’s not about christmas in particular and you’re more looking forward to ringing in the new year. Even if your main selling point is how much bubbly you’ll be consuming or how many mince pies you’re going to gorge on, it doesn’t matter. You need to see something great at the end of the tunnel in order for all your hard work to feel worthwhile. I’m sure you’ll all be doing your best for the family, but you matter too. Particularly if you don’t have a lot of help or are filling in for someone who usually pulls everything together, because it takes a lot out of you.

Homemade isn’t a cop-out. I personally find it quite enjoyable to bake and make jewellery, and I’ve never felt resentment for my homemade giftbags of cookies and other confectionery; or for fashioning bracelets and pendants. It’s not often you’re given something one of a kind, or made specifically with you in mind. It can be fun to make and something you can do for less money than you’d spend at a jewellery store. This might not be suited to all or feel like enough, but you can always pair it with something more generic if needed. You could buy a gorgeous jewellery box from one of their favourite stores, then start off their collection with a handmade necklace. If however, food is the bigger issue for your wallet, why not have every family member contribute a dish? Delegate and celebrate! You’re allowed to take a load off, it is the holidays after all… get help with the cooking, start a giftwrapping workshop with your other half when the house is quiet and shop online, rather than running around supermarkets and toy stores. Keep your mind organised and avoid the hustle and bustle of other frantic shoppers. Just don’t leave things too late! It’s important to put your feet up from time to time to keep from wearing yourself out. Even if it just means taking a breather for an hour or two and getting a coffee with a friend to talk about other things. The clearer your mind, the better you’ll handle the stress. Try to look forward to the holidays rather than

What I do is so rewarding I feel like a million dollars!

SEEABILITY Supplied by: Stacey Till

Natasha made the decision to change her career from hairdressing to being a Support Worker and she doesn’t regret the decision for a second! Natasha has helped John come out of his shell and showcase his personality, improving his self-esteem, being able to voice his feelings and having the courage to be a little more creative. They are about to embark on the challenge of painting and re-decorating his room once John decides on a colour! What do you love about your role as a Support Worker? Everyday is exciting and different compared to being a hairdresser when everything was the same, day in and day out. I love my job and would never go back to hairdressing. What I do is so rewarding – I feel like a million dollars when the residents I support thank me it is so genuine and is what my job is all about. It’s a great feeling when you change someone’s life and help them achieve their goals Why SeeAbility? Working for SeeAbility is fantastic, there is an excellent support network and with open-door policies I feel like I can voice my opinion and it actually matters. There is a fantastic training and induction programme, opportunities to get all of my qualifications – it is a career for life!

“This is the best job I have ever had and I absolutely love it!” We also spoke to one of our residents Laura. She has had a fantastic day and cannot stop smiling as she just had help setting up Google Home which gives her a lot more freedom and independence!

What is important about working for SeeAbility? We need people who are caring, patient, and passionate about what they do. It really feels like you are at home with your own family – carrying out routines, having dinner, watching movies, I am even lucky enough to join the residents when they go on holiday! We encourage and support our individuals to make the best decisions to do what they want to do. We are not there to tell them what to do it is like encouraging a friend.

25

What activities do you enjoy doing? I love going out!I like going swimming, out for dinner, going to town and shopping! All of the people we support achieve the extraordinary everyday thanks to people like Natasha. HOME IMPROVEMENTS Supplied by: Leanna Carl - Omni Local

Keep your House Warm this Winter It’s difficult not to spend most of our time at home during the winter season - flu season hits us hard sometimes, Christmas needs to be planned and family are visiting a lot more. The last thing you want is to catch a cold due to a draughty house or eat away at your Christmas savings to keep the heating on constantly. If you can find the time to make an effort in keeping things cosy, it’ll make life easier and make you and your family happier when coming home after a long day at work or school. Get your boiler checked First things first, before the demand gets any higher, see if you can get your boiler serviced. You don’t want to get caught short when things get chilly... and a cold shower is the last thing you want in the morning. Once a registered professional confirms that your boiler is running as normal, you’ll be able to use it as needed without a worry. It’ll definitely be harder to see to jobs like this if you leave it, as the holidays can limit the number of repairmen still on the job.

Visuals do make a difference, and painting a room could be a good indoor rainy-day activity. You can also make pomanders for festivity. All you need is oranges and cloves, and the bonus - oranges are a great way to prevent some insects looking for shelter too. Figure out where any chill winds might be coming in

Winter warmers An easy way to ensure everyone is warm and cosy is to invest in some nice soft throws or rugs and ensure all bedding is up to scratch. If you’d like to create a warmer ambience, you could also try to get the fireplace going if you have one, light some scented candles or invest in some thicker curtains. You’d be surprised how much warmer things will feel. Even painting richer hues onto the walls like cream, orange, red, pink or purple can make you feel a little less cold, as much as you may notice that empathic chill you get watching tv when someone’s in a freezing climate. 31

Draughts can be caused by damaged window frames, small openings under the door, vents, or even letterboxes. You could use some affordable, easy to use draught excluders for most things. For other things, such as the quality of your windows, it could be worth getting some new ones installed and calling in a professional. For things like door re-hinging or repairing the window frames, you could potentially take care of this yourself with a step-by-step youtube tutorial or word with your local DIY store. There are also devices you can install to the exterior of your vents to prevent cold air from leaking in.

When it’s Time to Remortgage or Renew, it’s Always Worth Consulting an Independent Adviser Out of all the ways in which we help our clients at Kingston Mortgage Services, the one that keeps us busiest is remortgages. We play host to a steady flow of people seeking advice as either their circumstances change or their existing product is due for renewal. So let’s take a look at the different reasons why people remortgage. 1) To get a better rate when their existing product expires With many lenders, rates goes up if a customer automatically renews when the end of the mortgage term is reached. A surprising number of customers don’t look to remortgage and carry on with their current product – paying more as a result. Some banks are fairer and give the same rates to existing customers as they do to new ones, but others weigh the rates which can be costly if you don’t do anything. The advantages of using an adviser or broker like us are that i) we’ll remind you if your mortgage term is approaching its end date, offering a review and ii) give independent advice from across the market. Always check your adviser is independent and has access to the whole market. We work with many lenders to give expert advice. We’ll also go ahead and process the application for our clients. Another advantage is that new lenders will revalue your property, as part of the process. You could even find your home has gone up to the next “loan to value” band and you get a lower rate as a result. We find that most people we advise do move to a new lender to get a better deal. But if the best advice is to stay where you are, we’ll tell you. Most lenders now will let us process the switching of your existing product with them anyway. 2) To raise capital If you want to carry out home improvements or want a deposit to buy another property (perhaps to help your children on to the property ladder), remortgaging can free up some of the equity in your property.

35

FINANCE Supplied by: Chris Poore - KMS One word of warning: High street lenders aren’t keen on remortgaging for the purpose of paying off a large tax bill or starting a new business, but we have access to specialist lenders for this and other non-standard borrowing requirements. 3) Debt consolidation You may have additional unsecured debts on credit cards and be looking at the option of consolidating this debt into one more manageable monthly payment. By discussing your circumstance with an independent adviser they can offer guidance on what your options are. Are there any drawbacks to remortgaging? There could be some set-up costs, however some lenders may cover these as an incentive and may also offer cashback to cover fees. You may find the paperwork and the underwriting process daunting, however this is where we can help. So if your lender sends you an offer of a new rate, don’t just take it. This is an opportunity to see what other options are available. At Kingston Mortgage Services, we can reserve a rate up to six months in advance of the end of your existing deal. If the rates then go up, you’ve done yourself a favour by getting in early; if they go down you can look again – there’s no obligation. For more advice, contact us at www. kingstonmortgages.co.uk / 0208 255 8336. A mortgage is a loan secured against your property. Your property may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage or any other debt secured on it. Tax treatment is based on individual circumstances and may be subject to change in the future. Information is based on our current understanding of taxation legislation and regulations. Any levels and bases of, and reliefs from taxation, are subject to change.

COMPETITION REVIEW

Joy Restaurant We had the pleasure of visiting Joy in Surbiton to see what delights Mr Sohan Lal Badoni the Executive Chef could create. He is a top international chef, producing dishes from a variety of areas of India, Bangladesh and Pakistan. A great welcome at the door led us into a very tastefully decorated state-of-the-art restaurant which is deceivingly large – up to 100 seated. With wonderful atmosphere due to the two large pitched conservatory glass roofs. The menu is very extensive, an enormous array to choose from and a Festival of Seafood too. The Seafood Platter starter was fabulous: fish kebabs, king prawn, scallop and tilapia, all lightly spiced and roasted in Tandoor. One of the unique dishes was Banjara Uttaranchal. The lamb was beautifully spiced and tender. Another treat for your taste buds is Duck or Lamb Xacutie Ceylon, in special home-made spice, chopped chilli, ginger, onions, tomatoes and touch of fresh coconut. All sorts of desserts to follow from Gulab Jamun, cappuccino cup to Ferreros (to name a few), that is if you have room! Prices were very reasonable, which is deceiving as the quality of food is superb. Sohan will cater for all dietary needs, gluten free, vegetarian, allergies and different spice levels etc -just inform them on arrival,
