Love Kingston Gives Grants to 8 Groups

Love Kingston is thrilled to announce it has awarded 8 charitable groups with grants to fund projects around the theme ‘from isolation to integration’ in 2018. This year the Love Kingston grants were awarded to local groups Kingston Carers Network (Young Carers), Learn English at Home (LEAH) The Vintage Banquet, The CornerHOUSE, Knowledge Advocacy Guidance (KAG), CREst, Man & Boy and Mencap.
9-12 years who are struggling with life and an adult, male mentor, from within the family to develop a bond that will last for the long term. “Many thanks to Love Kingston for their great support for the MAN&BOY programme.” Sarah Roberts Farewell to Mayor Julie Pickering It’s been an amazing year having the Mayor working with us to promote Love Kingston and support the need for a foundation fund in the Borough. We are privileged to have Julie personally commit to working with Love Kingston going forward until 2020 and very grateful that she has helped raise around £50K in her Mayoral year. Thank you!
One of the grantees, LEAH, works with vulnerable ethnic minority adults who are isolated because of their low levels of English. Kate Brown is Director of LEAH and responded ‘LEAH’s work is at the heart of the community and so we are thrilled to enrich our offer with the support of Love Kingston.’ Chair of Trustees of the Douglas Centre Trust, Jeremy Thorn, on receiving the news of funding for The CornerHOUSE, said ‘We are delighted that Love Kingston has given us this chance to build on the diversity of our performers and audiences.’ Community Fundraising Manager for Love Kingston, Tessa Kind adds, ‘I love this Borough and am delighted that so many local projects have been supported this year, more than any other year. There is certainly a huge amount of work going on in the Borough to help residents feel more engaged and less isolated. COMMUNITY PERSON A Fond Farewell from Mayor of the Royal Borough of Kingston 2017/18: Julie Pickering

As Mayor of our Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames, with my husband, James, we have met many people in the 600 appointments covered over the last year. Our Borough is truly amazing, both as a place and because of you, its residents and those who work in it. Sadly my year as Mayor and a Councillor finished on 22nd May, with the new Mayor Cllr Thay Thayalan taking over. It has been a wonderful 7 years as a Conservative Councillor and especially a privilege this last year as Mayor. I wish to thank all I met for giving me a warm welcome and support wherever I went. Love Kingston has been my chosen Charity this year as we are only 1 of 2 Boroughs without a Foundation fund. Thanks to all who helped me raise over £50,000 in my Mayoral Year. Many asked “What has been your best moment in the year?” and my reply is, “The best is not an event but an emotion. My range of emotions has expanded to become more humbled and proud of my home town!”
So rather than words picking moments, I leave you with a few pictures capturing some of Kingston’s highlights from the many taken over the year. From formally (and proudly) accepting the Mayoral office; to celebrating the river; down to Showcasing Kingston with the Carnival, Ride London, Kingston Half Marathon and the IYAF festival. It has been even more wonderful to have my husband James consort beside me. It has been great to see the work of various Kingston Strategic partners such as the Universtiy Town House ground breaking event and Civic reception, Kingston College acheivers awards, Rose Theatre, Police open day and Kingston Hospital, with its new A&E and Dementia wards, and of course the various wonderful Voluntary and Community groups. I’ve also met many entrepreneurs through Omni, Kingston Chamber of Commerce, Rotary and Kingston…keep up your good work in keeping Kingston Economically successful! Goodbye as Mayor and Councillor for now and thank you Kingston for a wonderful year. We truly have a wonderful Royal Borough. Be proud and may it long last…

Fraudsters may: • Advertise an item for sale at a bargain price – with pictures of the item so it appears to be a genuine sale. • Encourage buyers to move away from the website to complete the transactions and may offer a further discount for doing so. Do this and you risk losing any protection you had! • Contact you if you have ‘bid’ on an item but not been successful in winning the auction, claiming that the winning bidder pulled out. Once you agree to buy, they will either provide bank details or insist payment is made via a 3rd party payment service for mutual protection. You then receive a very legitimate looking email which appears to be from a website or 3rd party payment service directing you how to make payment.

Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA)

The RYLA programme is highly varied and combines organisational, physical and sporting activities, as well as offering opportunities to develop discussion, social and leadership skills.- The residential and group oriented scenario enables young people to debate issues of professional responsibility and human relations, improve leadership and communication skills, learn about businesses and institutions, and meet Rotarians while having a great deal of fun and making friends for life. For young adults, RYLA provides the opportunity to refine skills and explore pertinent topics with their peers and elders. This year’s venue was High Ashurst, Outdoor Education Centre set high up on Box Hill, in the Surrey countryside. Kingston Rotary sent two candidates Riyad Miah from Kingston College and Lewis Sheead from St. Phillips School in Chessington. Both were recommended through the Young Carers organization in Kingston. During the week, forty-five young people took part and were divided up into 5 teams, Riyad was in team Hilary and Lewis was in team Shackleton, the other teams were Livingstone, Fiennes and Columbus. No prizes for guessing how they arrived at these chosen names! The programme was delivered by Surrey Outdoor Learning and Development.

The activities and challenges were varied and included kayaking, abseiling, climbing, archery, and high ropes. The idea is to build confidence, leadership and good communication. Following some of the teams’ presentations those members who had musical skills performed a short piece. The young people were a great credit to their parents, Rotary and the instructors from Surrey. All the youngsters were in high spirits and you could see their confidence and achievements shining through. They had made many friends during their time on the RYLA course and learned a lot about themselves and others. A very valuable Rotary programme. Kingston Open Studios 2018 It’s already that time of year again when Kingston artists and makers open their homes and studios to the public. Over two weekends in June – 9/10th and 16/17th – they will exhibit the work that they have been making over the past year. In these final weeks they are putting the finishing touches to those last pieces and clearing away the paint pots, brushes, clay, paper and fabric to make space for the annual show. And what a show it will be, with over 80 artists in 20 venues across Kingston, many taking part for the first time. Painting, drawing, ceramics, photography, printmaking, textile art, illustration, fashion design, jewellery design and many more artistic disciplines are all represented at this exciting and intriguing event. This is a perfect opportunity to meet local artists, see their work and discover the passions that inspire them. Visits are free of charge and artists are happy to talk about their creative process. Works of art are for sale but there is no obligation to buy, the focus is on enjoying your visit.

An exciting addition to the creative scene is the upcoming ‘Print Kingston with KAOS’ event, kindly sponsored by Pullingers Art Supplies and Eden Walk, taking place on 2 June in Eden Walk. Members of the public are invited to draw their favourite Kingston building and add it to our rolling community artwork that will hopefully tour the Borough over the autumn months.
A trail map and catalogue of participants will be widely distributed around local cafés, restaurants and public buildings, but is also available to download from our website.

The Young KAOS competition, launched in 2016 as part of our commitment to raise the local profile of the Visual Arts, took place again in April. Students aged 16-19 submitted an imaginative range of work that demonstrated their artistic flare in manipulating a broad range of art materials. The winner was George Birch from Tiffin School, second Freja Khela from Tolworth Girls’ School and third Yena Choi from Tiffin Girls’ School. Many congratulations to you all! They will be exhibiting their winning pieces alongside professional artists during Open Studios.

It is so easy to feel the abundance of Nature at this time of year - with flowers in glorious bloom and trees sporting the bright green early leaves. The kind of yoga I love is abundant and as generous as the flowers that allow bees to feast from them and the plants ripening their first crops. When we practice yoga, we have a large range of practices to choose from and if we pick the right one at the right time, then we invite in that feeling of abundance and fullness.

Yoga is trying to touch your toes, doing a few sides bends and a little spinal twist. Notice how you are breathing and try to make your breaths as long as relaxed as you can, breathing in and out of your nose, which cleans the air before it enters our body. A mindful cup of tea: Use the five minutes when you make a drink to take a few deep breaths. Be thankful for the break, and be mindful of each step - putting in the tea bag, boiling the kettle, pouring water and stirring. Appreciate your work: Whether you work in an office, a classroom, on the road or in the home, make sure you take time to acknowledge your hard work and the benefit it brings to you, your family and others. Be

The Cooking Corner COD WITH SPICY TOMATO SAUCE Serves 4 Ingredients: • 4 pieces of cod weighing 150g each • 4 tomatoes cut into cubes • 3 tbsp tomato puree • 1 tsp soy sauce, natural, not sweetened • 1 garlic clove, crushed • 1 small red pepper, cored, seeded and finely chopped • 3 tbsp olive oil, • Himalayan salt and freshly ground black pepper • 50ml water Method: • First make the tomato sauce. • Heat 1 tbsp of olive oil in a heavy based frying pan on a low heat. • Add the crushed garlic and the tomatoes. • Cook on a low heat for a couple of minutes and add the tomato puree, soy sauce and red pepper. • Cover and cook on a low heat for about 15-20 minutes. • Stir every now and then. When the sauce becomes too thick add a little bit of water. Take care not to put too much water in!

• Dry the fish with kitchen towel. • Brush the fish with the rest of the olive oil and season. • On a low heat fry the fish in around 8 minutes till cooked. • Serve the fish and sauce on heated plates. Nutritional value per slice Carbohydrates: 6 Protein portion: 1½ Vegetable portion: 1 Serve with a nice green salad or French beans.

The Ancient Market Place

In my last article I wrote about Kingston’s Market Place from the Middle Ages to the start of the 18th century and will now continue the story. I ended the previous article by mentioning the statue of Queen Anne put up on the rebuilt Town Hall in 1706 for the princely sum of £47 18s and 6d! The 18th century then saw the development of the coaching industry which added greatly to the prosperity of Kingston. There had already been many inns around the Market Place, such as The Rose (now Hobbs, where you can still see the Tudor beams), run at one time by Henry VIII’s valet who would leave his “day job” at Hampton Court to manage a pub in Kingston! With the arrival of the coaches in the Market Place for their first stop from London to Portsmouth, these inns then gained a thriving business. Some people would take only a “comfort stop” and it was claimed that horses could be changed in only two minutes. Others would stay the night, and the side overlooking the river was the “posh” side, since it not only provided the views but also space for horses to be stabled. One of the largest was The Castle Inn (now NatWest) and another was The Lion and the Lamb (now the Druids Head) where troops were billeted during the Napoleonic Wars and where later Jerome K. Jerome wrote part of Three Men in a Boat. On the other side of the Market Place Charles Dickens stayed at the Wheatsheaf (now Rymans). Such was the success of the coaching industry that there was much hostility to the coming of the railway, seen as a threat to the prosperity of the town. This led to a small nearby village taking the initiative and welcoming this new invention – this village took the title of Kingston upon Railway, and quickly grew into a flourishing suburb,
namely Surbiton. Kingston eventually accepted the inevitability of the railway some thirty years later, but to this day it is Surbiton which enjoys the faster and more frequent service to Waterloo! An annual event in the Market Place during the first half of the 19th century was the Shrove Tuesday Football Match – between teams of young men, sometimes re-enacting battles between Saxons and Danes! But this was often accompanied by what we today would call “binge-drinking”, and was stopped in 1867 because of the riotous behaviour of participants and spectators! Today the Market Place is a hub for shopping, eating and relaxing - especially in the summer months. Longer days ensure that the growing season is well and truly with us. So now is the time to sit back and enjoy the results, although in order to keep it looking good there is always something to do, whether it is pruning, tidying or watering. Bedding plants for Pots/Hanging Baskets If you have not already done so, it is time to plant out your pots and hanging baskets using a loam-based compost, as it is easier to keep watered than peatbased and add some water storage gel/ crystals. Remember to water pots and hanging baskets at least once a day in hot weather and feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 2 to 4 weeks. The choice of plants depends on whether you are putting the pots in sunshine or shade. Geraniums, lobelia, silver leaved plants do best in sunshine, whereas fuchsias and bizzy lizzies cope with shade. The colour of the pot can also help tie together a planting scheme to give a bigger impact. Bedding plants can also be used less formally in the garden, perhaps to brighten up the front of a border or fill bare soil under roses. Straight lines and symmetrical patterns are not compulsory here – it’s more a case of having fun with colour and textures. Deadhead roses
Watering To conserve water, water the soil rather than the plants and make ‘ponds’ around individual plants so that the water can really soak in to a great depth. Remember also to keep bird baths topped up. Pond maintenance Keep removing blanketweed or algae from your pond to allow the plants and fish room to breathe and ideally top-up ponds with rainwater. Floating algae are easily removed by twirling them out of the pond with a cane, but leave this on the side of the pond for a day to allow any insects trapped to get back into the pond. June is traditionally the month when roses are at their peak. Removing the flowers as they fade will keep your display looking good and encourage more blooms. Snap off just below the head - this is thought to make new blooms appear more quickly than the classic method of cutting just above a leaf. 19

Q: My husband and I agree we need to separate but he wants shared custody of our two children, ie 50/50 time with them, and I can’t agree to that. What would happen if he took me to court? Zoe, Teddington A: Shared custody is becoming more common, I suspect because it’s seen to be fair to both parents. The question is always: is it fair to the children? Younger children seem to cope better with frequent moves; I suspect this is because they need to see both parents more often - a couple of days could seem like eternity to a five year old, but will be gone in a flash for a 15 year old. Also, teenagers can become embedded in their rooms with their

technology, and have more clothes/sports kit/bikes etc etc, making it more difficult for them to move homes frequently. Whatever the age of the children, the nearer the two parents live to each other the better, so that forgotten essentials can easily be retrieved in time for school. Some children, especially those on the autistic spectrum, find change very difficult and really struggle with shared care arrangements. Others thrive on it, and grow into superbly organised adults. You know your children, and whether they are likely to cope. It may be right for one child, but not for the other, you don’t have to make the same arrangement for each child. You can try it out and adjust as necessary. You also need to be flexible as the children grow older and may want a different timetable, or to feel they have a firm base in one home. The crucial factor for shared care is how good a co-parenting relationship the adults have post separation. If parents are at loggerheads, each move to the other home is going to be emotionally fraught for the children, and will cause them both short and long term damage.

I can’t recommend going to court to resolve disputes over children – mediation is always a much better option. Courts at the moment tend to give fathers what they want, so my advice is to keep the channels of communication open and keep talking!

Hopefully this article will inspire you not to miss out and to stay happy, yet organised through times like these.

Fathers Day Sunday 17th June marks this year’s special day. It can be hard for some to decide how to celebrate. Typically, a lot of Dads have a tendency to brush off birthdays and holidays and though I’m sure they don’t want to be forgotten, they don’t want a fuss. This unfortunately doesn’t help us when we want to spoil them a little. If you’re looking for a way to celebrate this year with your Dad, your Stepdad or just as a helping hand for your kids to treat their Father, why not ask him personally? He probably won’t reel off a list of gifts that he’s been hoping to get, but he can at least give you some notion as to how he wants to celebrate -or not celebrate. For example, you could organise a nice family meal or get everyone he cares about to meet
him at his local pub or lunch spot. Perhaps he has hobbies, and might enjoy a trip to the museum or a day of fishing? You’ll know him best so can decide if he would better appreciate tickets to a football match or a gig, or whether he’d be more grateful for a simple “best dad ever” mug or new tie. In the past I have celebrated by making his favourite dinner, going for a meal as a family or just having a night at the cinema and drinks. Your best bet is to just make an effort, put as much thought into it as you can and don’t base it solely on how much money you should spend. If you can, why not involve more Dads? Unless it takes away from his special day or involves personality clashes, it could be a case of the more the merrier. Get your Father to join the party and get his Father too, bring Fathers-in-law and bring friends’ Fathers, it could be one for the books! ‘wedding season’ on account of its perfect weather conditions and traditions that suit most couples. This means many of you will be expecting to have or attend someones upcoming nuptials and that you may be a little on edge regarding last minute planning. It is understandable that many brides-to-be feel stressed right before their wedding, and much of that is probably unavoidable, but it can help to know you have people who understand or who can share your worries. Speak to your friends and your bridal party, and vent to them when you need. It will be more helpful if the person you’re venting to has been married before as they can share their experiences. Other ways to combat stress leading up to your wedding could be through meditation; taking a short time to relax by yourself with a bath, some music, maybe candles; even spending a romantic day that’s just you and your fiance to put your focus on why you’re looking forward to your wedding can help not to mention that kind of intimacy can help to relieve stress, as can some light exercise. Don’t be afraid to delegate here and there. If you’re on the other side of all this, looking forward to attending the wedding as a guest, you may have your own worries regarding what to wear, what’s to be expected and possibly even how to behave. All you need to remember is that it’s the happy couple’s

day and what they say goes! Be on your best, don’t drink too much (or at least not until the reception!) but don’t feel like you can’t enjoy it, it is a happy occasion after all! Just follow the wedding party as instructed, enjoy the food, the music, the loving feelings and thoughtful speeches and use the event as an excuse to sport your very best attire - but avoid wearing a white dress! Ideally you want to look good, but not like you’re attempting to steal focus. Wearing an extravagant dress with a train or something incredibly provocative will give the impression you want all eyes on you. An easy fix is to go with a non-patterned, somewhat sophisticated dress but to pair it with accessories and nice shoes that make it appear as something you’d only wear for special occasions. Make sure you find out what the theme and location for the wedding is first of course, as you wouldn’t want to be dressed for church at a beach wedding, or completely matching the bridesmaids! This is risky if you go for pastels, however pastel colours are great for a summer wedding. Just take caution! Try not to go for all black and consider bringing a backup pair of comfortable shoes for later if you’re busting out your highest heels.

Gardening check-ups Keep your plants well fed and watered, deadhead spring blooms, tidy up and collect dead leaves (these can even be kept for homemade mulch) and clean off any seating and tables that might be used a little more often. Patios and driveways Power-wash your patio, scrub or sponge down your decking and sweep around the driveway to make the exterior look more appealing to party guests and get the kids to spend some time in the garden rather than in front of the tv. Planting If you want to freshen things up a little, including for your kitchen and meal-times with the family, start planting some fresh flowers for appearance and herb seeds for using in food later, such as basil, chives and thyme (these love a bit of sunshine).

There are several areas that aren’t seen to as often, such as air conditioning units and mattresses. Don’t discount them - flipping your mattress and cleaning your air con system/removing dust from cooling fans will aid you in those hard-to-sleep, overheated nights.
Now is a great time for a fresh coat of paint, as you can leave windows and doors open while it dries, and it’s not so hot yet that you’ll feel faint from exhaustion as well as paint fumes (we hope!).

Stamp Duty – What Are The Facts?

Despite fears over property prices in the wake of the UK’s Brexit negotiations, property prices remain high. This continues to make it very difficult for first time buyers to get on the housing ladder. Much of this has been blamed on the explosion in the buy-tolet property market, which is something the new stamp duty rates hope to address. What are the Stamp Duty Rises? As of 1s April 2016 anyone purchasing an additional property will be liable to an increased rate of stamp duty of 3%. The changes are an attempt by the Government to curb the buy-to-let property market, whose growth is seen as pushing up property prices and making it a lot harder for first time buyers to get on the property ladder. The tax duty rises will be followed by reductions in mortgage interest relief in 2017, something that is also likely to hit landlords. New Stamp Duty Tax Rates Stamp duty currently falls into bands based on the value of your existing residential property. Up to £125k of this is zero rate but increases to 2% charged on property value between £125k - £250k. If you were to buy a second property this initial zero rate band would be set at 3%, with anything between £125k - £250k incurring 5% in stamp duty.

Separated married couples who have not yet divorced will also be exempt from the rules and not treated as one unit when purchasing a property. Finally, if you inherit 50% or less of a property 36 months prior to the transaction date of a property purchase, you will not be liable to the new rules either, as this will not be considered an additional property. There are very few opportunities for relief on the new stamp duty rates. This means ‘flipping’ your main residence to your new property won’t help you avoid the new rates as you will still have to sell the first property to get a refund. A mortgage is a loan secured against your home. Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage or any other debt secured on it.
Although the new stamp duty rises were designed specifically to hit buy to let landlords, they cover anyone buying a second home. So if you have one property and are replacing it then the new stamp duty rates won’t apply. If you have more than one property then the rates will apply to all additional properties bought, unless you are

Everybody has an opinion on how you should present your home for marketing. We have all seen the TV programs and flicked through the magazines featuring the latest décor and trends. We thought it would be useful to give some advice for the important steps in ensuring your home is marketed effectively. Whatever your reason for selling, it’s critical that you get it right so that you’re in a good position to move forward. Selling up and moving on is exciting but it can also be sad if you are selling a home with a lot of good memories. So, put your trust in an estate agent you can rely on. • Research local agents online and learn about the services they offer. Not all agents are the same. • Speak to friends and family – a recommendation speaks volumes.
You may notice the valuations vary. Do not automatically go for the agent that gives the highest valuation – this may be a tactic to get your business. If your home is listed at too high a price you will miss out on valuable marketing time, only to have to reduce your asking price further down the line. You should by now have done some sums and have a good idea of the costs involved in making the move. The cost involved in selling depends on many factors: the value of the property, the tenure and the complexity of the transaction. For every cost listed, different providers will charge different fees, so it is always best to get a range of quotes.
• Seek out agencies that are members of the Ombudsman Services: Property and are professionally affiliated with either RICS and/or NAEA. • Choose an agent with a good website. Do their photos make you want to see more? It is essential that your property is showcased professionally online. • Look at how your chosen agent presents itself and its level of organisation. Is there a buzz among the staff? Is the office welcoming and uncluttered? Are you greeted when you walk in? • Does your chosen agent have a great local knowledge of your area? Are they enthusiastic about your home and area?

A good agent’s fee will be a percentage of the actual selling price, so it is in their interest to secure the best price they can. However, fees can vary widely, but remember that just because an agent offers a lower fee which looks to be good value, you may not receive the same service standard as a more expensive agent. This is a false economy as a very cheap agent will not secure the best price for your home.

Organic chicken is to be introduced to the menu soon, sourced from local British farms. We had a delicious meal with a great variety of speciality food. We started with soup: crabmeat and sweetcorn, a delicious combination. The spicy crispy shredded beef was tender and crispy, complimented beautifully with a side dish of stir fried vegetarian vermicelli rice noodles Singapore style. The Peking Duck skin is marinated with natural flavourings then fan dried for 12 hours before being roasted in a special dome oven over coal bricks, which explains the amazing taste, accompanied
by homemade pancakes. Well worth trying (advance order is required)! To compliment the meal there is a variety of locally sourced British and Asian beers/lagers including gluten-free options, also a range of spirits, liqueurs and soft drinks. If you are interested in healthy but tasty oriental cuisine, this is definitely the place to visit.
