LOVE KINGSTON

RideLondon-Surrey 100 at 60 for Love Kingston

Supplied by: Jonathan Simnett

“Too many people living in London in rapidly growing, changing and ageing boroughs find themselves isolated from others and unable to enjoy the place in which they live. Love Kingston helps organisations tackle local poverty and isolation effectively without the costs and waste involved in huge, remote bureaucracies. From helping young carers gain support and appreciation via the Young Carers Network; to supporting those who feel isolated because of language barriers at Learn English at Home (LEAH); to providing much-needed lunch, information and a space for socialising for the vulnerable and homeless at CREst in Norbiton, Love Kingston makes a difference everyday. I’m lucky that I don’t (yet) need to access these and other services, but I do believe strongly in local people acting together to meet needs on their doorstep and helping them to do so.

I’m hoping to do it inside 7 hours which, as I am turning 60 years old as I write this, will be a challenge for which I’m training hard on the `Dark Destroyer` (pictured). So, please can you support my blood, sweat and, gritted teeth to help people having tougher lives than ours by donating what you can?”

That why I’m riding the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey100, a closed-roads 100 mile cycle `sportif` routed through much of the 2012 London Olympics cycle course.

Ride London takes place on Sunday 29th July 2018. You can support Jonathan’s effort (or any of our Team LK cyclists) at https://bit. ly/2thXJ89 Click on ‘fundraisers’ and donate what you can on their pages. Join us in Al Forno, 1-3a High Street, from 12 noon to cheer on Team Love Kingston.

Passing through Kingston on both the outward and return legs, it encompasses some of the toughest climbs in the South of England. The course starts at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford and ends on The Mall in front of Buckingham Palace on Sunday 29th July. COMMUNITY PERSON Paul Pickhaver awarded MBE in Queen’s birthday honours list 2018

Supplied by: Kingston Foodbank the gap in income when a person moves from welfare to work and increasingly the challenges of low income jobs on zero hours contracts. We know that the introduction of Universal Credit in Kingston this month for new claimants will leave some people with no money for 5 weeks so we are talking to other agencies about how we will support people in that process.

The Director of Kingston Foodbank, Paul Pickhaver, has been awarded an MBE for his services to the community in the Queen’s birthday honours list 2018. The citation in the London Gazette Reads: THE QUEEN has been graciously pleased, on the occasion of the Celebration of Her Majesty’s Birthday, to give orders for the following promotions in, and appointments to, the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire: M.B.E.

‘The support we give is only possible because of the incredible generosity of the people and businesses in Kingston, who with us see the needs and respond giving food, funds and time. You can find ways to support Kingston Foodbank at www.kingston. foodbank.org.uk’

To be Ordinary Members of the Civil Division of the said Most Excellent Order: Paul Warren PICKHAVER: Director, Kingston Foodbank

Kingston Foodbank is run through the ‘City Changers’ initiatives of Doxa Deo Community Church and in addition to Kingston Foodbank and Fuelbank runs Christmas Lunch on Jesus – aiming to distribute Christmas hampers in South West London; and is currently piloting Ezrah – a new employability scheme to support people into work from a history of long term unemployment or significant barriers to employment.

For services to the Food Bank and to the community in Kingston-upon-Thames. Since Kingston Foodbank was launched in December 2011 it has distributed over 31,000 food parcels to local people and currently. In 2017/18 Kingston Foodbank received and distributed 28 tonnes of donated food and supported 4741 local people. Kingston Foodbank working with npower, one of the big six energy companies, also piloted Fuel Bank and issued the first Fuel Bank voucher in April 2015. Over the last three years 4000 people in Kingston have benefitted through the support that scheme gives towards household gas and electricity bills. Npower have now rolled out the scheme to benefit 100,000 people across the country all funded through the Npower Foundation which Paul was invited to speak at the launch of. Paul says ‘It is an incredible honour to have our work acknowledged in this way, it recognises not just what I have done but what our amazing army of volunteers and supporters have done to help local people in crisis, working in partnership with over 200 front line services. ‘There remains a need for a Foodbank in Kingston. We continue to see people struggling when benefit payments are interrupted, the crisis of homelessness,

CARE IN THE COMMUNITY THIS MONTH’S

The Dittons Fair

CHARITY

On Sunday 13th May, a community came out in force to enjoy the most popular annual event on the local social calendar.

Supplied by: Jackie Bourne

The Dittons Fair, held on Giggs Hill Green in Thames Ditton, provided an afternoon of entertainment for all ages – from those looking to buy books, plants and a Bachmanns cake (with a cup of tea of course), to those enjoying the bungee bouncers, pig racing and the packed arena programme. Whilst the Fair mainly raised funds to provide a rich programme for children at The Dittons Scout Group, it also supported a host of other local charities including The Princess Alice Hospice, CHEER, RNLI, Guides, Greyhound Welfare and Linwood Care Home. In addition, The Dittons took the opportunity to raise awareness of two causes: access to defibrillators within the community and the fun to be had by volunteering at your local Scout group (contact dittonsfair@gmail.com

POLICE ADVICE

Hello Readers!

Supplied by: Alison McWinnie - MET Police

Fraud and Cybercrime Would you like to know which frauds and cybercrimes happen in this borough? And how you can protect yourself? We are currently working with FALCON, the Met’s Fraud and Linked Crime online department, and will be providing monthly updates on this very topic. If you don’t currently receive our newsletters and would like to receive these updates, do email Kingston.NHW@Met. Police.uk with your postal address to register. Burglary The Metropolitan Police Service Organised Crime Command has teams of detectives who tackle serious and organised crime in London. Recently specialist officers from the command have been working with police boroughs in South West London (including Kingston) and Home Counties Constabularies to disrupt an international crime group committing burglaries. So far the team has arrested over 30 people who are now either in prison or outside the UK.

tackling this group and the harm they cause. The recovery of jewellery will hopefully help repair some to the damage caused by the burglars. We are determined to work with Neighbourhood Watch and the communities to make it harder for criminals to operate.” A New Inspector is in Town! Inspector Nick MILTON has transferred to the borough to run the Safer Neighbourhood wards. He has over 26 years’ experience, in both response and community policing. Inspector Milton is pleased to be joining an already well established and enthusiastic Safer Neighbourhood unit and says ” I have joined a team with experienced sergeants who lead professional ward teams who are committed to maintaining/improving the quality of life for residents all over the borough”.

The organised crime group target houses in affluent areas, typically near open land or golf courses which are used to approach and escape properties. Houses are often broken into on the first floor to circumvent burglar alarms, using garden furniture or items in the garden to climb up. The group targets small expensive items like jewellery, watches and designer accessories, but Safes have also been taken away.

Inspector Milton (centre) is pictured with the Tolworth Safer Neighbourhood Team. Have a wonderful and safe summer!

The police team has recovered a huge amount of jewellery that is available for the public to view, with the aim of identifying more victims and restoring valuable items to their owners. https://www.flickr.com/photos/ metropolitanpolice/albums DI Court – Organised Crime Advisors “The police understand the impact of burglary and the huge emotional toll it has on people. Glorious Mud – there’s nothing quite like it!

Supplied by: KAOS

Started in 2014 by two Kingston-based potters, Glorious Mud makes ceramics with a twist. It is now run solely by Cressida Borrett, who has spent many years making her pots in a small studio to sell at local fairs and in galleries across the country. The designs of Cressida’s collection of quirky ceramics are based on obsolete objects, a consistent theme throughout her work. Among the most popular are the vintage map coasters and pot stands made to order, featuring any location in the world. Add to these the letter range using an old typewriter typeface, and the dog and cat porcelain decorations whose design idea came from a dog-shaped cookie cutter found on a charity stall. The dogs Cressida passes on her daily walks in Richmond Park are the unknowing models for the burgeoning variety of dogs in the range. This year, for the first time, Glorious Mud will be at the Hampton Court Flower Show and Cressida is busy expanding her botanical collection. Newly launched is a bone china bowl with a plate that doubles as a lid for the microwave. The china is safe in the freezer, fridge, dishwasher or microwave oven which makes it easier to give up cling film and plastic boxes in the home altogether. Everything Cressida makes is designed and made by hand, here in the UK, much of it in Kingston. At a time when traditional pottery businesses are at risk of folding altogether, Cressida’s aim is to support UK-based ceramics as far as she can. She is pleased

to be working with a highly-skilled team of individuals who turn her ideas into products. Even her packaging is sourced from the UK as far as possible. Although Cressida acknowledges that Glorious Mud will not bring her untold riches, she says that she looks forward to Mondays, when she will find an email inbox full of happy ‘thank yous’ from happy customers. A hobby that started in a pottery evening class many years ago has become a thriving business – and a source of pleasure, both for her and the people who buy her pots. Most of Cressida’s products can now be bought directly from the Glorious Mud website www.gloriousmudceramics.co.uk, but if you are unable to find what you are looking for please send an email via the contacts page.

GARDENING July Gardening Tips

Supplied by: Janet Bacon

It is the holiday season but not for your garden plants and this means that a bit of attention now will promote more flowers for this year and prepare the plants for next year. A little light pruning Now is the time to prune Wisteria whippy side shoots. Cut the stems at about five leaves long which will tidy the climber but also encourage more side shoots. The stems will need to be shortened again in winter to promote the flowering spurs that we all love to see. It is also the best time to prune plum, apricot, peach and cherry trees as the sap is rising and this will reduce the risk of these trees suffering from silver leaf dieback disease. Cordon, fan and espalier trained Apple and Pear trees should have their summer prune now. Always use a sharp pair of secateurs and cut back all new side shoots to just above a bud and leave them about 7.5 cm long. Deadheading Bedding plants and perennials will need deadheading on a regular basis to encourage further flowering and keep them looking neat. Trim the spent flower stems on lavender plants to keep them compact. Cut back herbs to encourage new growth of tasty leaves. Holiday Care If you are going away on holiday move containers and hanging baskets into a shady part of the garden out of the sun where they will need less watering. If you do not wish to move these then consider installing a timer controlled

17

drip-feed watering system from an outside tap, a watering spike or if the plants are in a greenhouse a watering mat fed by a reservoir hooked onto the metal glazing bars. Take notes and photos of your garden now to remind you of any changes that you would like to make next year before all the growth starts. Garden visiting can also be a good source of ideas to improve your garden. The National Garden Scheme Yellow Book http://www. ngs.org.uk/ list gardens throughout the UK which are open for charity and the owners are on hand to answer questions on names and growing requirements for the plants. FAMILY ADVICE

Your Q & A’s with Divorce Consultant, Diana Jordan

Supplied by: Diana Jordan

Q: We have recently divorced and our two children aged 7 and 5 live with their mother. We have agreed that I will have the children for half of the school holidays but my ex has said she will not allow me to take the children abroad on holiday this summer. Can she stop me? James, East Molesey A: Yes, I’m afraid she can. And equally you can stop her from taking the children out of the UK. I am assuming you do not have a court order for the children to live with their mother, but if you do, she is entitled to take them abroad for up to 28 days without your permission.

You both have parental responsibility so you each need the agreement of the other to take the children abroad, and it’s always wise to take with you a signed letter from the other parent giving their consent. You also need to check on the entry requirements of the place you are travelling to as some require more formal proof that your children have the right to enter the country without the other parent. It is always reasonable to expect the other parent to provide details of a planned holiday including flight/travel details, address/type of accommodation and who else will be travelling with your children. If you are unable to reach agreement about this holiday I would suggest you go to mediation – you have an excellent local service: MiD in Hampton Hill. If you still can’t agree, you will need to ask the mediator to sign your form so that you can apply to the court for an order allowing you to take your children on holiday.

Bo by local Book au author and fo former solicitor, al also available as an ebook on Amazon

Please don’t be tempted to take your children without agreement or a court order. Is it possible that your ex is worried you won’t return the children after the holiday? Don’t even think about it: child abduction is a serious criminal offence for which parents are usually sent to prison these days!

A WINTER’S TALE Thu 30 Aug - Sun 02 Sep Based on the play by William Shakespeare | 26

Adapted by Howard Goodall and Nick Stimson A bold and brilliant interpretation of the wellknown play by William Shakespeare. Two worlds collide into one happy resolution. Paranoia and power unfolds into a parable for the redemptive gift of youth, and a celebration of young people and the potential they have to make the world a better place. Unashamedly emotional, the musical tone shifts from dark, brooding passions, to sunshine and redemption as we bathe in the warmth, humour and joy of a youthful summer of love. Composed by Howard Goodall one of Britain’s most distinguished and versatile composers and featuring some of the UK’s most talented young performers from Youth Music Theatre. HOGARTH’S PROGRESS Thu 13 Sep - Sun 21 Oct A Double Bill by Nick Dear | Directed by Anthony Banks The double bill begins with the first major revival of Olivier Award nominated comedy, The Art of Success, first performed by the RSC in 1986 before transferring to the Barbican and New York. Compressing the artist’s ascent to fame into a single, action-filled night, Dear follows a largerthan-life Hogarth as he mingles with famous playwrights and artists, royalty and prostitutes, prime ministers and murderesses creating an exceedingly imaginative, thoroughly scurrilous, but nonetheless highly entertaining portrait of a world on the brink of transformation. The second play, The Taste of the Town, catches up with Hogarth 30 years later, finding him now hugely successful, yet still at odds with the world and with himself. Old and tired he may be, but there’s always time for one more fight. To advertise in Omni Local call Felicity on 07900 312634

They are a somewhat snappy and comedically sarcastic same-sex couple who soon has their world turned upside down when they realise that Erasmus has a ten year old grandson they didn’t know about.

They both struggle with the idea of giving up their extravagant lifestyle to raise a child, but they’ve been handed the task and need to deal with things in their own, unorthodox way. They might even learn something about family and sacrifice along the way. This movie also includes stars like Kate Walsh, Alison Pill and Jake McDorman and is not suitable for younger audiences.

HOME IMPROVEMENTS

Summer Improvements Many of us will be going on holiday or kicking back in the garden this time of year - however, it can’t always be fun and games! There are plenty of areas of the house where you’ll need to make that extra effort to stay on top of things, especially in areas you forget about. If you’re having trouble deciding where to start, hopefully this list will help.

Supplied by: Leanna Carl - Omni Local

Keep pests away Stock up on insecticides if you need, or try out some homemade remedies. For example, ants are apparently opposed to orange, moths steer clear of cedar wood and lavender and rats or spiders don’t like peppermint oil. These may or may not be effective but may be safer to test run. For bugs that are harder to keep a handle on, such as cockroaches, try bait traps or poisons if you need to, but be careful when handling. Windows and Doors Check any wooden frames for damage from pests or nesting creatures and give them a wipe down or treatment when you can. See if your windows or door frames need caulking, as this is better done when there’s no rain. This may help to keep critters from crawling in as well, which is a problem this time of year. Guttering While the weather is a little nicer, remove any debris left in your gutters with a spoon or a trowel to prepare for the rainier weather later on. Scoop up any mess into black bags but take precautions when using a ladder and

29

wear protective eyewear if possible. Keeping things airy Try to keep your home ventilated this time of year, as the stuffiness is going to get unpleasant and odours can develop - unless allergies are an issue for you this time of year and you need to avoid letting them in - in which case you could opt for an air conditioning unit/upgrade alternatively. If you do get allergies, even just a dust or pet her allergy, you could also invest in a dehumidifier. Outdoor checks Take this opportunity to take care of jobs like window cleaning, fixing up the BBQ grill or washing down your decking/patios. Even the outer walls of your home could use a hand in some cases, which could be solved with a simple hosing or wipe down. Seeing that your plants are fed and watered, clearing away debris on your driveway and tidying the porch can make things a lot more inviting for any guests you’ll be having round for a barbecue or party.

HEALTH & WELLBEING Yoga for the Soul Yoga is a system for living that is thousands of years old. Yet these postures - asana in Sanskrit - are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to yoga practices. In fact, many of the movements or postures that we associate with yoga now are only about 100 years old just a drop in the ocean of time. The way we exist in the world is everything. We should be thankful for yoga asana classes; powerful ways to help us feel good. Every time we practice it can be a reminder to live well in the world. But there’s so much more. I was lucky enough recently to fulfil a long held dream - seeing a live performance of an artist I admire deeply. It was kindly booked by a friend because for some reason I kept delaying the booking myself - and denying myself a joyful experience. It gave me pause for thought - why did I not just book it? It gave me a nudge to mend my ways - and remember how important it is to create beautiful moments for yourself. The next two weekends I visited artists’ studios in my local area (Kingston Open Artists’ Studios) and enjoyed it hugely - both looking at the art and speaking to people about their creative ideas and processes. It reminded me of a book I came across several years ago - The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron. It’s a 12-week course in discovering and recovering your creative self with exercises to follow each week. It introduced me to the lovely idea of an artist’s date. Imagine that you wanted to impress someone and choose an activity or place that

33

Supplied by: Joanna Blundell they’d really love - then imagine that person was you. Again, it’s something we all know - but that we so often forget to do. When was the last time you went to your favourite spot in nature or cooked your favourite meal, taking time to go and buy the ingredients at your leisure, or went for a cycle - or did a yoga class?! Anything that you enjoy. Think of something now and put it in your your diary or calendar or make a mental note - and don’t cancel! Value you own time and enjoyment as much as you would if you were meeting someone else, or visiting a professional. Be led by your joy and what you love. This is yoga. It is a powerful medicine.

FINANCE

Rumours of the end of the buy-to-let era have been – slightly – exaggerated

Supplied by: Chris Poore - KMS

One of the most talked-about subjects in the UK property market in recent years has been buy-to-let (BTL) mortgages. These products are designed for people who want to purchase a property with the specific aim of renting it out. Major changes to the rules governing the financing of these purchases have made BTL less attractive – and the impact has been significant. The Intermediary Mortgage Lenders Association (IMLA), the mortgage lender trade body, reported in February that the amount of new money raised to invest in BTL properties slumped 80% from £25billion in 2015 to just £5bn in 2017. So how does the BTL market look now? And what are the prospects for the future? What has changed? •In 2016, an extra 3% surcharge was imposed on stamp duty on additional properties. •In 2017, the tax relief on mortgage interest for higher rate taxpayers began to be phased out. Last year it was reduced to 75% and in 2018-19 it is down to 50%. What were the changes designed to achieve? The intention was to revitalise the housing market from the bottom up, reducing the buy-to-let sector and making more properties accessible to first-time buyers. What has been the impact on the buy-to-let sector? Across the market, demand for BTL mortgages has definitely reduced. Those still doing this sort of business tend to be professional landlords. What we call “accidental landlords” – people who find themselves with an extra property on their hands – have largely been taken out of the market. Landlords do have the option of buying through a limited company, though it is strongly recommended that a customer seeks appropriate tax advice from a tax practitioner / accountant. One effect of the changes is that landlords are trying to recoup some of their losses by putting rents up. This does not help firsttime buyers. Many of them are in rental accommodation – if their rent goes up it makes it harder for them to save up enough for a deposit.

35

So to some extent it’s holding the market back. At the same time, lenders are evolving with the new regulations and are keen as ever to do business. What are the prospects for the immediate future? Many with existing BTLs don’t realise that rental income is added to your overall income, which means you could become a higher-rate taxpayer. The fall-out will really hit many individuals when they do their tax return at the end of the current tax year. We will, as a result, see some landlords offloading property. That will in turn generate extra activity in the housing market – which was, after all, the point in the first place. The fact remains, though, that there are still a lot of opportunities in BTL if you are a serious investor and you know what you are doing. How can I find out more? One of the best places to learn more is the Property Investors Network (PIN). Kingston Mortgage Services is the official mortgage partner of the Sutton branch. The PIN meetings are friendly and inclusive. There’s a good mix of newbies and experiences property professionals and the ethos is to help each other and share ideas and experiences – good, bad and indifferent. Whether you are looking to get into BTL, or a landlord keen to expand an existing portfolio, attending a PIN meeting is well worth a visit. For more advice, contact us at www. kingstonmortgages.co.uk / 0208 255 8336. A mortgage is a loan secured against your property. Your property may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage or any other debt secured on it. Tax treatment is based on individual circumstances and may be subject to change in the future. Information is based on our current understanding of taxation legislation and regulations. Any levels and bases of, and reliefs from taxation, are subject to change.

COMPETITION REVIEW

Hampton Court Palace Golf Club After a beautiful drive through Home Park, with Fallow Deer grazing by the side of the road, tree lined avenues, passing lakes and distant views of Hampton Court Palace; disbelieving we were still in London, we arrived at the Golf Club for lunch. Tucked away quietly from the hubbub of traffic and noise, it is quite a secret venue. Every day they offer a daily drop-in lunch bar menu and pre-booked evening meals, once a month there is a special Sunday lunch for non-members and members. The Terrace overlooks the lawns, trees and golf course. Regardless if you are a golf player or not, you are welcome to visit for casual meetings over a coffee, inside or on the sun terrace, for formal meetings or renting different rooms or a marquee on the lawn. It is ideal for parties and weddings too, with plenty of free parking (overnight too), no noise limitations,

bespoke packages – hog roast, bbq, special chefs menus. They offer flexibility to suit your requirements and event size. Upstairs is the feature vaulted ceiling event room/bar which is licenced for wedding ceremonies, or it can be set up for meetings. Downstairs has a dancing area and meeting room that opens onto the sun terrace and croquet lawn. Dogs are welcome (provided they are friendly).
