OmniLocal - Kingston Upon Thames • March 2015

Hello everyone, As I write this (I was going to head in a different direction this month), I almost forgot that this is our 30th edition! That means I have been printing and distributing Omni Local for exactly 3 YEARS! I am honestly writing this with a huge lump in my throat, thinking about all the blood, sweat and tears that has gone into getting this far! I have so many people to thank! Firstly, I have to thank everyone who has advertised! Truly, without your faith we would have disappeared a long time ago. Next I would like to thank you guys for reading Omni Local. If there were no readers, the magazine would have been pointless, and I can’t forget the printers and the distribution team. Finally, I need to thank Leanna! – As you know the magazine has gone from strength to strength, and even though I have make some mistakes (and some improvements), Leanna has been with me for just over a year now and I would not have been able to keep up with everything needed to publish this magazine, or do any of the many great things we do within the community. Thank you , thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you. No this is not a misprint or one of my mistakes! IF I COULD THANK YOU ALL PERSONALLY I WOULD! This month I want to welcome our new Business Contributor – David Wimblett from 7 Training, our new Property Contributor – Peter Greenwood from Alex Clark Estate Agents and the following new businesses - Chilworth Flooring, Cake Walk, Sunlight Cleaning and some returning advertisers – Legato Flowers, The Voice, and Sofia-R. Please do me a favour and see if you can use their services! I am off to celebrate! Many thanks once again! John Ps. Please try out our featured advertisers (quote Omni!). Without them, the magazine wouldn’t exists! OmniLocal Ltd. LOCAL BUSINESS

This section is all about local business owners who support Omni Local, and we would like you to get to know these hard working, dedicated people. This month I am talking to Valdirene Ruston from Sofia R.

Supplied by: Leanna Carl & Valderine Ruston

Q1: So, Valdirene, how long has Sofia R been in business? A1: I launched in 2013, but it’s been in the making for much longer. As every entrepreneur knows, the research stages can last forever and taking the next step can be difficult. There is still so much I want to work on, but as a mother of 2, juggling a business around children can be challenging. Q2: What made you decide to run your own business? A2: I worked for 10 years in radio broadcasting and I loved it, but I’ve always wanted to be my own boss and have always had business ideas. This motivated me to set off on my own, and I don’t believe that Sofia R will be my only business venture. Q3: Have you had a lot of experience in this type of business before? A3: No, but I’ve always had a passion for fashion. Also, I’m originally from Brazil, so I know a thing or two about great swimwear! I used to report on fashion, music and art events and I got the opportunity to meet some great talent, which can be very inspirational for someone wanting to set up a business.

manufacturers about producing larger sizes for Sofia R, as I’ve had a lot of enquiries about this! Q6: Any special offers on at the moment, or sales to come? A6: We’re currently re-designing our site and will be doing one-off promotions through Twitter & Facebook. For Omni Local readers, as always, we have our special discount code, so make sure you use that at the checkout!

Q4: What makes Sofia R stand out from other clothing stores in the area? A4: We’re online only, which provides an aspect of exclusivity. I source products from high end manufacturers based in Brazil, so most unique styles aren’t available in Europe yet. All Sofia R swimsuits are high quality and a great fit, with a XtraLife Lycra guarantee. This is a type of hi-tech lycra which is soft to touch but retains it’s shape for up to 5 years.

Q7: Brilliant! To finish, do you have any tips for those looking to start their own business? A7: Remember to delegate, as you can’t be everything in the business. Also, get a Mentor! You’re more likely to keep on track of your goals when brainstorming ideas and they can give you guidance. Most importantly, trust in yourself and believe in your brand.

Q5: Do you offer a wide range of sizes/ styles? A5: Sizes are available from XS to SL. This is a tricky area as Brazilian sizes tend to be half to one whole size smaller than British and European sizes. I’m speaking with

Hillcroft changes lives “When I was at school, the teachers told me I would never make anything of myself. It was only when I discovered Hillcroft College that things changed. The staff and tutors were exceptional and supported me through their Access Course. I have gone on to successfully complete my degree at St Mary’s University.” - Odette

Supplied by: Stacey Morgan - Hillcroft College

Inspirational stories like Odette’s decorate the corridors of Hillcroft College in Surbiton, a National Residential College that offers study opportunities for women with the courage and determination to improve their lives. The work done by Hillcroft deserves to be shouted loud and clear from the leafy hill top location near the station, where it proudly sits. The Gables, the former Estate of the wealthy Wilberforce Bryant, of Bryant and May Matches, became the new home of Hillcroft in 1926, thanks to support from philanthropist Thomas Wall. Thomas wanted women to access education so they could use it to escape the exploitation and poverty inflicted upon them by an indifferent society. Women from many different backgrounds connect here through a willingness to learn. I asked Acting Principal, Sue Carter, if there was something in particular that the diverse group of women who study at Hillcroft College have in common. He replied, “Every woman who comes here wants to be successful and to come out of the shadows. Mums want to show their kids what they can aim for.” A variety of courses are on offer at the College, with residential and non-residential options, including pre-access to higher education. The curriculum also includes courses to improve employment prospects and weekend programs offering business skills. Onsite childcare and plenty of outdoor space make Hillcroft College an ideal place for women to safely put aside their personal

circumstances and focus on becoming the people they would like to be. Courses are free for those on meanstested benefits, including accommodation and childcare, and there are also several affordable options for those who do not meet the eligibility requirements. With a mission to “empower women through education,” Hillcroft offers support for all types of learners, and provides strategies for students with dyspraxia and dyslexia. Since 1920 Hillcroft has been helping women change their lives through education. Long corridors lead to light-filled rooms and quiet study areas. The building itself has a confidence about it, and makes you feel that education is important. It’s easy to see why women who grab the opportunity to study here leave feeling that THEY are important too.

LOCAL CHARITY

THIS MONTH’S Supplied by: Jean Warwick - KAB CHARITY

Living with Sight Loss Almost two million people in the UK are living with sight loss. That is approximately one person in 30. Sight loss affects people of all ages, but as we get older we are increasingly likely to experience problems with vision and one in five people aged 75 and over are likely to be affected. The main causes for this are Age-related Macular Degeneration, Glaucoma, Cataracts and Diabetic Retinopathy. Kingston upon Thames Association for the Blind (KAB) was established more than forty years ago and together with the Local Authority and other organisations they work hard to promote the interests of Blind and Visually Impaired people (VIPs) in the Royal Borough of Kingston.

forms, shopping or sometimes just a chat and a cup of tea.

The KAB office has a team of three part time workers, Della, Kerry and Jean and an established network of Volunteers. Funding comes mainly from the Greater London Fund for the Blind, support from the Local Community and their own fundraising efforts, which has included sponsored walks, swims, cycle rides and craft fairs. With this money KAB are able to fund Grants, support an Eye Buddy Scheme, The Kingston Talking Newspaper and a variety of Blind Clubs throughout the Borough. The Clubs offer refreshments and activities such as craft, exercise and quizzes so that VIPs can socialise and support one another. For the more energetic there is a Lawn Bowls Club and Tandem Cycling, for those that used to enjoy reading as a pastime there is an audio lending library of over 1500 books. The Eye Buddy Scheme matches trained Volunteers with VIPs. Volunteers visit on a regular basis to help with many tasks including reading, letter writing, filling in

Membership of KAB is free to join for both Sighted and Sight Impaired People within the Borough and sometimes beyond. A quarterly newsletter is produced, called the Eye Opener, and covers recent social events at the Clubs and locally, leisure and sporting interests, Council information and much more. There is also ‘Eye Bay’ where Low Vision Aids can be offered for sale or free. The newsletter is distributed in both large print and audio. If you know anyone with significant sight loss, or if you are interested in Volunteering please contact the office for further information. POLICE ADVICE Data Protection The Data Protection Act 1998 gives you the right to find out what information is held about you on computer and some paper records. This right is known as the Right of Subject Access. The Act also requires that those who record and use personal information (the data controller) be open about how this information is used and that anyone processing personal data comply with eight data protection principles of good practice. The 8 principles are that data must be: • Fairly and lawfully processed

with the requirements of the Data Protection Act 1998. What is ‘personal data’? This is defined as information relating to a ‘living’ individual who can be identified either from the information itself or indirectly by combining the information with other data available to the data controller. Personal data includes expressions of opinion about the individual and any indication of intentions anyone may have in respect of the individual. Obtaining information under Data Protection Act to prevent or detect crime

• Processed for limited purposes • Adequate, relevant and not excessive

It is often the case that to prevent or detect crime, or to locate an offender the MPS must obtain information from an organisation, which may not be required under the DPA 1998 to release this information to the police. Section 29(3) of the Act enables a ‘data controller’ to disclose this type of information, if they wish to do so lawfully. In such cases the MPS must complete a form and send it to the organisation, which may hold the information.

• Accurate • Not kept longer than necessary • Processed in accordance with the data subject’s rights • Secure • Not transferred to countries, which do not have adequate protection for personal data How we process Personal Data? The MPS Fair Processing Notice describes the categories of personal or sensitive personal data processed by the MPS and for what purposes. The MPS is committed to collecting and using such data fairly and in accordance

Big Hearts Lead to Bigger Success on Love Kingston Day!

Supplied by: The Love Kingston Team

Last month we celebrated Love Kingston Day 2015! Love Kingston Day is a way for everyone to unite and come together to have fun, fundraising to support the vulnerable living amongst us. February was buzzing with people trying to make a difference throughout Kingston. This year has been bigger and better than ever, with so many people getting involved. We are so grateful to everybody who helped to plan, fundraise, and put traditional Valentine’s Day plans aside to really change the lives of those in need. Early 2015 saw so many local businesses, schools and nearby residents putting all their efforts into unique and inventive fundraising ideas, before, during and post-event. These included general donations, network lunches, bake sales, dinner events, an art exhibtion by the children at Dolphin Nursery, mufti day at Kingston Grammar School, and many more fun, creative initiatives... From 12th - 15th February, Kingston College staff and Students, The Euphonix Choir, BHS, and the Bentalls centre all supported the campaign by hosting flashmobs, choral performances, massage therapy and pop-up beauty stands, contributing all donations to Love Kingston.

town centre! Thames Sailing Club even held a special mini regatta in aid of Love Kingston, and race entry tickets from Sandown Park were given out at the Eden Walk Shopping Centre, with donations collected from our own Love Kingston team going directly to the worthy cause. There are so many people to thank this year for their exciting and charitable endeavours! Love Kingston have been consistently working together to help those who are homeless, hungry, can’t access affordable credit, suffering domestic abuse or disadvantaged youth - along with building The Kingston Legacy Fund to help provide grants to other amazing community and charity groups working across the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames.

A very popular initiative this year was the sold-out Rich Man, Poor Man extravaganza, that provided locals with great food and live music, as well as the delicious free hog roast and beer provided by the Canbury Arms and local Park Brewery, collecting donations for the campaign.

Its not too late to show your support! If you’d like to donate to the Love Kingston campaign, or find out how you can get involved in helping the community, visit:

CARE IN THE COMMUNITY

THIS MONTH’S Supplied by: Leanna Carl - Omni Local CHARITY

Remembering Mum this Mother’s Day For some people Mother’s Day is just another special occasion to mark on the calendar, perhaps with a note to remember flowers before a visit. Sadly, for others who have previously lost their mother, its a day that brings up more memories and emotions than usual, which can become very difficult to bear. Unfortunately a lot of people can be left devastated whilst grieving a loved one and nostalgic reminders can make it all the more painful, regardless of “time healing all wounds”. The important thing is that you don’t put your life on standby and that you try to honour their memory in a positive way. Whether you’re a sentimental person or not, think of how your loved ones would want you to remember them. It is still worth celebrating their life and all the great memories you had together by keeping traditions going.

when writing a card for a loved one. Do something different. No one knows your mother the way you do, however, all our loved ones want us to be happy and don’t want us to live without regret. Why not take the opportunity to do something you wouldn’t normally do, go somewhere special, or even just take the evening off to try out some decadent home cooking, gather the rest of the family and toast to the important people you have and have had in your life. Buy her flowers. Especially if this is one of the traditions you’ve always kept during you and your mother’s time together. Flowers are a lovely way of paying tribute to your mum and for taking to her gravesite for a moment of reflection. The scents and sights of a beautiful arrangement will also help to brighten your mood.

Buy/make them a heartfelt greetings card and let all your thoughts out on paper. Simply writing down how you’re feeling and how much you are missing them can really lift some of the weight off of your shoulders that tends to bring your spirits down this time of year. We all tend to open up a little more

13

Pay a visit to another mother. Whether you’re paying a kind visit to care home or senior centre for someone who could use some company, or paying a visit to a grandparent or close relative. Making someone smile, whilst having someone to talk to and share memories with will help you feel more at ease and will give you the chance to rekindle some of the happiest moments in your life.

Mother’s Day and Kingston’s Queens

LOCAL HISTORY Supplied by: Mike Seigel - Kingston Tour Guides

Mothering Sunday is in origin a Church festival, though it has now been heavily influenced by the commercialised day of the US. In the UK it is still held in the middle of Lent, three weeks before Easter Sunday. I thought that in this month of Mother’s Day I would look at the Queens associated with Kingston, and their often unfortunate attempts at motherhood. Mary Tudor, usually dubbed “Bloody Mary” because of her unleashing of burnings of Protestants, was in fact a friend of the town, as the good citizens had rallied to her cause at the time of the Wyatt Rebellion in 1554 when they cut down the wooden bridge to stop the rebels crossing the river. To Kingston, the Queen granted extra Fair Days, but in the country as a whole she was becoming increasingly unpopular by marrying the Catholic King of Spain, Philip II. It was fear of an heir and therefore of a half-Spanish Catholic dynasty that frightened the people, but sadly for Mary, what she had hopefully imagined to be pregnancy turned out to be a fatal tumour of the stomach. It was her successor and sister, Elizabeth I, who gave the royal charter to Kingston Grammar School, in Queen Elizabeth Road named after her, and Elizabeth is one of the monarchs depicted on the façade above Jack Wills in the Market Place. Yet she was, by her own devising for political

purposes, the Virgin Queen who never experienced the joys of motherhood. In contrast, Queen Anne, who bedecks the Market Place in her newly regilded splendour had many pregnancies -possibly as many as eighteen! Yet only one of these lived beyond a few months, Prince William of Gloucester, and he sadly died at the age of eleven. So Queen Anne’s death brought the end of the Stuart dynasty and the arrival of the Hanoverians, with a direct line down to our Queen today. Happily, Queen Elizabeth II, who has visited Kington several times, is a mother, grandmother and now great-grandmother! Among her various visits was the four hundredth anniversary of the charter to Kingston Grammar School, and the celebrations of her forty and then fifty years on the throne. We hope that all Mothers enjoy their special day on Sunday 15 March. The Kingston Tour Guides are offering an extra walk that day at 11am, meeting, as usual, in the Market Place outside the church gates. The charge is £5 per adult – and we hope that readers might wish to treat their mothers to a fun walk around our historic town before taking them out to lunch!

How to Re-tile a Bathroom Wall or Floor

Supplied by: Leanna Carl - Omni Local

What you’ll need: Plastic sheeting - Masking Tape - Hammer Trowel - Level - Spacers - Drywall Compound - Thinset - Utility Knife - Chisel - Bucket - Sponge - Drill - Paddle Mixer Attachment Rubber Grout Float - Water-resistant Silicone Caulk - Bathroom Tiles - Rubber Mallet Method: 1. Cover cabinets, floors and appliances with plastic sheeting before you begin, holding with tape.

8 and 9 until you’ve covered the wall end to end in a horizontal line.

2. Score grout and caulk joints using a utility knife, then pry off each tile using a hammer and chisel. 3. Scrape the wall with the flat side of the trowel, removing all the old thinset. 4. Replace damaged drywall by filling in any holes or grooves and ensure it is even. Leave to dry. 5. Using the chalk line tool, mark out where each tile is to be fitted.

10. Start the next row using the last few steps, inserting spacers below the tiles for even spacing. 11. Hold tiles so that one side touches the wall and the other overlaps to measure perimeter tiles. Insert spacers between the tile and wall and mark the overlap. Cut along the mark with a wet saw. 12. leave the thinset to cure for 24 hours (don’t splash with water) and keep the plastic sheeting up.

6. Using a paddle mixer attached to a drill, mix as much thinset as you think you’ll use within 30 minutes and stir in latex additive until the consistency is a fudgy texture.

13. Remove the spacers and mix up a batch of grout. Then fill up a bucket of water for the sponge.

7. Spread a dollop of the thinset using the trowel over 3 feet of wall along the bottom chalk line, making sure it is the same width of the tiles. Create furrows in using the edge of the trowel.

14. Lift up some grout using the rubber grout float and drag it at a 45 degree angle across the gaps between the tiles. Once you fill the gaps of one tile, wipe the surface of the tile with a damp sponge.

8. Set the first tile into to the thinset on the left hand side and line it up. Press it gently until it sets and place the second tile to the right, inserting spacers between tiles for an even amount of space.

15. Change the water in the bucket when it starts to get dirty to prevent any haze on tile surfaces. 16. Let the grout cure for 24 hours, then caulk between the tiles. Remove the tape and sheeting covering anything and leave the caulk to cure.

9. Use the level to check it is even and tap with the mallet if not. Keep repeating steps

Q1 I didn’t prune my Roses in autumn last year, am I too late to do anything now? A1: Actually, spring is the best time for rose pruning. For the bush and Floribunda varieties, cut out all dead, damaged and diseased stems. Shorten main-stems by about one half to two thirds to encourage new shoots from the base. Any remaining side shoots should be cut back to an outward facing bud.

Fuchsia and summer flowering Spiraea can be given quite a hard pruning now, to two or three buds on the main stems. Remove any old shoots

Q2: My Camellia plants didn’t fare too well this year, as the flowers were rather disappointing. A lot of them opened up with dry brown edges.

delay doing this for a few weeks...

Q3: My Rhododendron leaves are looking rather yellow and mottled. Is it sick? A3: This is a sure sign that the plant is hungry for some iron. I would suggest that you get some seaweed extract. Following the dilution rates carefully, mix up a bucket of this solution and put some into a squirty bottle and spray all of the leaves. What is left, you can drizzle around the base of the plant.

Q5: My Snowdrops were rather disappointing this year, with fewer flowers than in previous years. What can I do to improve them for next year? A5: When Snowdrops start to reduce the numbers of flowers produced, it’s time To think about thinning out the overcrowded clumps. Unlike most other bulbs, Snowdrops (and Winter Aconites) can be lifted when they are still in full leaf. Ease them gently out using a hand fork, separate them out into individual bulbs. Replant immediately to avoid the risk of the bulbs drying out. Feed weekly with liquid tomato feed until the leaves have withered completely.

Other spring flowering plants may also appreciate a seaweed foliar feed as well – Camellias, Daphne and Azaleas, to name a few.

Save Money on Utility Bills with UWDC

Supplied by: Dave Goodman - UWDC

Everyone wants to save money on their utility bills and their shopping. No one likes dreadful customer service. Here at the Discount Club we can help with both of these. First, some ways to cut down on your energy bills: • Turn down your thermostat by just one degree and save about £85 a year. • Swap a dozen halogen light bulbs for LED equivalents to save £50 a year. Next up, have a look in detail at your phone bill. Do you really need to have the ring back service, 1571 answer phone or call divert facilities turned on? Each one probably costs £2 a month. Look at the number of calls you are making. If you are making lots of local calls then it might be worthwhile adding a UK calls package. This will give you 0845, 0870 and UK landline calls for about £6 a month. Do you need to make these calls from home? It may be cheaper to use up the inclusive minutes on your mobile contract rather than making land line calls. Is your mobile provider really giving you the best deal? With the Discount Club you can change your air time plan up or down at any time at no charge, even mid-month. Even better, if you have all your services with us and take out a mobile then we will give you free mobile phone protection too. How about that TV package you’ve got? Do you really need all of those channels? It’s not unusual to be spending £60 a month on loads

of channels that you don’t actually watch. How about saving on your shopping? The Discount Club can save you between 3 and 8% at over forty high street shops such as Sainsbury’s, M&S, Pizza Express, Boots, Debenhams, Argos and Toys‘R’us. IT Support for the Whole Family

Supplied by: Robert Brown The Computer Chaps

In this day and age, families worldwide are becoming more and more dependent on modern technology. The last thing they need is to worry about viruses, breakdowns and slow-connections. In order to keep a smoothrunning PC or Laptop, we need to consult the experts and know who to call when there is a problem. The Computer Chaps were born out of various consultancies dealing with the design topographies, installation and maintenance of computer systems for a very long list of such diverse establishments as The Royal Palaces and Tussauds Studios together with various Property Companies and Charitable organisations. They continue to work for professional organisations, but since 2007 have successfully brought their expertise to include home and small business help to the Kingston area. Their main mission from the beginning has been to help clients in a competent and jargon free way, whilst at the same time putting an emphasis on value for money. They’ve found that a great number of problems can be avoided by diligent updating of Operating System, Anti-Virus and General Program Software. ‘In all too many cases we find that a client has not installed updates, even to their Operating System’. Although the System default is always set to automatically download and install updates, a user will often inadvertently change the setting and we find the last update had been installed a year previously. Another common problem is that there is an old free trial of an Anti-Virus which hasn’t updated for a long time and is consequently useless for purpose or a complete absence of any Anti-Virus or Malware Software at all. There is also the worrying trend of scam pop21

ups, often purporting to be from recognised AV software companies, stating that a PC has a number (sometimes thousands) of Virus’ and Malware infestations. They will then give a freephone number to call. Once through to a call centre, the unsuspecting computer owner is asked to pay a sum of money to neutralise the non-existent virus’ etc. In the worst case they actually convince the computer owner to download a piece of software, allowing the bogus company to add problems to their PC. As a general rule of thumb, some of the ways to avoid serious PC problems are:1. Always keep all software updated 2. Always have a reputable, updated AV and Malware program on your PC 3. Never respond to any pop-ups 4. Should all else fail- Always keep a hard copy of all your Usernames and Passwords in a safe place- this will aid the successful restoration of a failed system 5. Back up any important data or photographs to an external media. Computing can be a fun pastime and is an increasingly necessary part of life- Enjoy it-If you need help, contact The Computer Chaps on – 07811 262834

Mother’s Day

THIS MONTH’S FEATURE

This month we are coming up with creative and personal ways to celebrate the most important woman in our lives - Mum! There isn’t a sure-fire gift idea to suit every mother, but there are a variety of ways you can show how much you care. You know her more than anyone, and will probably have a good idea of what she loves, but we want to give you some ideas on what we think could really make her day. Put your plans on hold! Make sure you devote the whole day to her and set aside any work, or plans with friends to fill the day with as many fun activities and loving gestures as possible. We all owe a lot to our mother’s for bringing us into the world and helping to shape us as individuals. In the future you’ll want to look back on your life knowing that you did you best to show your appreciation and she knows how special she is to you, as you are to her. Plan ahead! There are bound to be some last minute ideas, cancellations or ailments than can get in the way of planning, especially on a day where the town is busy with loved ones shopping for that perfect gift, or taking their mother to her favourite restaurant. However, Surprising her with a fun, thoughtful agenda and showing her how much thought went into your gift will definitely make her day. It’ll also help you avoid the stress of getting everything together on the day. Things like ordering cards or flowers online can really set your mind at ease and allows you to personalise and express yourself.

Day special offers, whether it includes a delicious dinner at places like The Queens Gastro Bar & Grill or spa days at your local Health centre. You could even opt for an art or pottery class for the two of you (and siblings if you like) and create something to commemorate the day. Even a movie with your Mum is a great pastime and gives you something to laugh or ponder over during a meal, or you could check the listings for the Rose Theatre and see if any shows are coming up. Capture the moment! So many people forget how much they love to flip through photo albums together, or even just clicking through Facebook photos to reminisce about the old days. Why not go the extra step and get an official photographer to capture the two of you in a quality portrait to hang up at home? Or, simply snap up your enjoyable day out in an array of mobile snaps - even if its just for Instagram! You’ll be glad you have those memories to smile at in the distant future (even the unflattering ones!). It doesn’t have to cost the earth! You’ll be surprised at how much your mother will

Chappie

Supplied by: Leanna Carl to fight back. After one of the police droids (Chappie) is stolen and completely re-programmed by Deon (played by “Slumdog Millionaire” star Dev Patel), it becomes the first robot to develop the ability to think and feel things like a human being.

This action-packed thriller is perfect for those who loved District 9 (myself included), and even stars Sharlto Copley as the motion capture police droid “Chappie.” Set in the near future, the police have now become a mechanized and tyrannical force, created in order to rid the world of crime. The people have had enough of their brutality and oppression, and decide

With thoughts, musings and the ability to mimic, Chappie becomes a beloved and powerful friend of the people who recreated him. Unfortunately, powerful and destructive forces (namely Vincent Moore, played by Hugh Jackman) begin to see Chappie as a danger to mankind and the inevitable end. They will stop at nothing in order to destroy Chappie and prevent an uprising. However, with Chappie’s new found lease for life, and the support of his new friends, he won’t go easy.

Out on DVD

The Hundred-Foot Journey With bignamed producers like Steven Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey, this feelgood film definitely lights up the screen, and will definitely be a hit for all the foodies out there! Hassan Kadam (played by Manish Dayal) is no stranger in the kitchen, with an incredible palette and an ability to create delicious culinary delights. He and his family move to the village of SaintAntonin-Noble-Val, located in the South of France, in order to open up an Indian restaurant. They are about 100 feet from a Michelin starred French eatery, but this doesn’t keep them from pursuing their dream.

27

They are soon introduced to a kind young woman named Marguerite (Charlotte Le Bon), and the slightly more unnerving and snobbish Madame Mallory (Helen Mirren). Shocked at the new arrivals, Madame Mallory is determined to shut their business down. Of course, following Mallory’s ploys, a bit of a battle commences between the establishments and the Kadam family realises they’ve bit off more than they can chew. As cultural feuds go on, Madame Mallory is somewhat intrigued by Hassan’s passion for French cuisine and can no longer deny his talent. Along with a new found friendship with Marguerite, this eventually leads to some reconciling and culturallycombined creativity. The unique team find a recipe for success in the most unlikely of places.

The Hypoxi Therapy Centre! The Hypoxi Therapy centre is based in Surbiton, Surrey and has been rapidly thriving since opening in 2011. This centre is incredibly popular with local residents, as it gives them the chance to lose weight in a more effective and more enjoyable way. You will burn off noticeable inches from all of the areas you feel less confident about, whatever your body shape. After just 12 committed sessions at the therapy centre, you will radically decrease the appearance of problems like cellulite and will improve and completely reshape those troublesome areas, such as the hips, thighs, waist and buttocks. The centre offers two different methods of training: Hypoxi Therapy and Vacunaut Training. Hypoxi therapy is generally better suited to those with more of a pear-shaped body. It is a popular option as it focuses on areas like the hips and thighs. Through a combination of vacuum therapy and gentle exercise, the lower body is able to naturally burn fat a lot faster. The sealed Hypoxi Pod rejuvenates the skin, and helps to increase blood supply and circulation to the lower body to result in increased metabolism and fat breakdown. Vacunaut therapy is better suited to those with an apple-shaped figure, as it also focuses on burning fat around the midriff section, such as the stomach area. Continued workouts and a well-maintained diet (particularly avoiding carbohydrates postsession) will guarantee inch loss, cellulite reduction and a naturally achieved, more toned body. This type of therapeutic training has had its fair share of positive feedback, even in the case of some celebrities. A lot 32

of first-time users would recommend their friends give it a try. The Hypoxi Therapy centre has recently been closed for refurbishing throughout the month of February, however it has definitely kept its promise and has come back bigger and better than before! The centre provides a warming and relaxed atmosphere, as well as multiple methods towards effective weight-loss. I personally can not wait to pay their new-look building a visit and see what wonders I can do for my body through the use of Hypoxi Therapy. You’ll find so many many positive testimonials from clients and locals who have dabbled in Hypoxi Therapy featured online. Pampering Treats for Mum

Supplied by: Leanna Carl - Omni Local

With Mother’s Day on the way, there is no better way to spoil that special lady in our lives than to shower her with gifts that make her feel special. Not only are there a lot of options for gift-basket goodies all over Kingston, but there are also ways that you can create your own one-of-a-kind goodies straight from the kitchen! What could be more thoughtful than a homemade concoction specially from you to her? There are tons of ideas for soaps and scrubs that can be done at home, but a surefire way to treat the skin and the senses is a quality sugar-scrub made with all natural ingredients. You can create these in a variety of scents and colours, from green peppermint to pure white vanilla crystals. I personally enjoy the aroma and qualities of warm gingerbread-scented essentials. Below is a basic method to making your own! • Firstly, ensure you have mason jars to store your bath products. • Combine 150g of brown demerara sugar, 150g granulated sugar, 1 tsp ground cinnamon, 1 tsp ground ginger, 1 tsp vanilla extract and 1 tsp nutmeg in a bowl. • Slowly add 120ml coconut oil and 60ml almond oil into the scrub until it creates a gritty texture similar to coarse, wet sand. • Scoop the scrub into the jar and seal. For an added decorative touch, add a label/ bow or some gingerbread men stickers to the jar. Alternatively, you could personalise the jar with a message, for example, “Just for Mum”.

This recipe can be re-created with various oils, spices, herbs, tea leaves and extracts to create fruity, sweet and spicy scents the all-natural way. Scrubs should be applied to wet skin (particularly on dry skin areas) and used to exfoliate in circular motions, rinsing off when done. Using natural, therapeutic remedies can do wonders for the body and is guaranteed to lift spirits. You could even create your own bath bombs by mixing a combination of baking soda, corn starch, citric acid, water, epsom salts, essential oils, food colouring and almond oil (Some of these ingredients may need to be purchased online). For an authentic and decorative bath bomb you can top them with sugar flowers used for baking. The ingredients are then pressed into moulds for a short time, then left out to dry for 2448 hours before wrapping in tissue paper/ ribbons. If of course, you’d rather not experiment at home, you can always find quality (and delicious smelling) gifts for Mother’s Day around Kingston in places like Lush, Superdrug and The Bentalls Centre.

WELLBEING SECTION

Phobias and Fears “Time to go to bed now, don’t let the bed bugs bite.” My parents have a lot to answer for, saying the above to get me, as a little child to go to bed. They did it with a smile on their face and with all innocence; yet today, as a mature, well-travelled person helping people overcome fears and phobias, I still check my bed. Phobias are irrational fears that have got out of hand, and apart from loud noises or falling over, all fears are learnt, and if we can learn something, we can unlearn it. “Little Miss Muffet, sat on a tuffet, eating her curds and whey, down came a spider and sat down beside her, and FRIGHTENED Miss Muffet away”. - A children’s rhyme with big emphasis on frightened, that induces shock. Now the child links that shock with a spider. “Don’t let the boogeyman get you.” Could there be a reason I look inside the wardrobes and check my doors are locked before I sleep? All over the world, people suffer with fears and phobias, their lives are restricted, their families and friends suffer, they suffer. Why? There are answers to relearn the things that created the fears and phobias, such as flooding, conditioning, Hypnotherapy, hypnosis, and others, but I have not the time to spend months working with clients. When I gave a talk in Turkey to 50 people, I just mentioned the word “snake”, and my translator, ran screaming into the corner of the hall, tears running down her cheeks.

phobia in my translator, get her into a good state, and back by my side. Within 3 minutes it was over, and my talk continued. Sufferers come from all walks of life. I spent a nice afternoon as a passenger on the M25 with an executive who had previously had a driver, and was uncomfortable driving on motorways; a gardener who had a fear of spiders, whose phobia was removed in 20 minutes; a lady whose fear of dogs prevented her from walking through a park, but who now owns a Jack Russell; a TV chef who worked in a 20 floor building and had never been to the top, who now gives dinner demonstrations from the rooftop, and a woman who had not been outside her home for 6 years, but is now an active support worker in her community. Today is the first day of the rest of your life, let us together live it the way we would wish it to be.

Just a mention had induced a flaming phobic reaction, and now I had fifty people in shock, people I could not communicate with as I do not speak Turkish. I had to remove that 35

Scratch repairs can be costly, and driving around in a damaged vehicle gives you less confidence than you would usually have at the wheel. Provided the damage doesn’t go too deep, there are some ways you may be able to help the situation and repair some of the damage yourself. Here’s how: Make sure it is actually a scratch Some cars can have a softer coating than others, and even minimal contact with another vehicle can leave behind a raised line of debris on top of the paint. Debris will be a lot easier to remove than a scratch.

ridges. If the scratch goes further than the clear coat, you may need to even out the surface by sanding a little deeper. Rinse the area as you go to see the progress and dry when finished.

Examine the depth

Apply a rubbing compound

When you can see what you’re dealing with, you can figure out your next move. Car bodies have 4 main layers - the clear coat, colour, primer and steel. Clear coat (the top coat) scratches can be handled easily, whereas a scratch so deep you can see the steel body underneath will require a professional.

Spread the compound around the area that has been sanded to smooth out the paint surface, then polish using a buffer on the lowest level for around 10 seconds. Do not allow the compound to dry before buffing. Increase the speed and buff for another minute, or until the dullness has faded, but ensure that you never buff in the same place for more than a second.

Where to start Make sure your car has been washed and dried before a scratch repair, as a build-up of dirt can lead to more damage during the next steps. Remove all debris from the scratched area by spraying it with water and make sure its dried thoroughly. Gently Sand the area

Wash the area Rinse off the area with water again and use a towel to remove any leftover residue as soon as possible from the surface of the car. Clean out any crevices with a toothbrush. Wax Wax and seal the area you have repaired, then gently buff again. use the wax as you normally would or consult a professional on how to, if you haven’t done so before. Wash again and check that all scratches are gone.

Using sandpaper around a sanding pad, gently rub the area in the direction of the scratch, but don’t go any further than the clear coat layer, or it may develop dips and

How do you get to Manchester?

Well, obviously, the first question is from where? Since the route would be very different from here in Kingston, than it would be from, say, Bristol. Then of course you could go by train, plane, bus or car, and I guess if you were being extreme, by bicycle. Then there is the reason for going, because that could have a bearing on how you get there.

Looking to Move House this Year?

Supplied by: Leanna Carl - Omni Local

This year a lot of us spent the whole of January coming up with new resolutions and planning for a fresh start in 2015. For some, this could involve moving house or having a big clear out. If you’re preparing for a relocation, or if you’re simply looking to sell, now would be a good time to consider a big home cleanse. There is no better time to spruce up your house than post-winter and pre-sale, as it
