OmniLocal - Kingston Upon Thames • June 2015

Hello everyone, I hope you’re all enjoying the sunshine! It’s been a great week as I write this, so let’s hope it’s not raining by the time this gets to you. Firstly, I want to thank everyone who supports Omni Local. We’ve had some great comments about the new style of the magazine (KEEP THEM COMING!). On our website, you’ll notice our new Local Business Directory. Please feel free to leave feedback for the businesses who have supported us. We’re still tweaking, but you’ll get a good feel of what I have been talking about for many months. If you are a local business owner, it is the perfect time to get some FREE advertising, ahead of our official launch! I’ve attended many meetings lately, seen what’s in store for IYAF 2015, and saw the launch of the Dementia Appeal at our wonderful Kingston Hospital. I also met with the wonderful Pauline Woods, who has given her heart and soul to the Born too Soon charity (I was heartbroken visiting the baby unit she is involved in, what an awesome woman!). It has been a busy month! I am really looking forward to July, with holiday breaks, and Kingston becoming even more alive! This month, our special feature is all about IYAF - see page 22-23. Also, take a look at our new advertisers! London carpentry on page 31, and Chez Vii Boutik on page 20. Please get in touch, or refer a friend, and discover some great local businesses. Take a peek at this month’s competition! The guys from Busaba Eathai have offered an awesome prize! I recently spent an evening there and I promise you, they offer great food and outstanding service. Stay safe, and good health to everyone. John *LAST MONTH’S COMPETITION WINNER* Congratulations to Andrew Traylen for winning the Meal for 2 and bottle of wine at The Old Moot House! Thank you for taking part. To see how you could win with Omni, please check page 40 for details, or why not like us on Facebook? OmniLocal Ltd. LOCAL BUSINESS

This section is all about local business owners who support Omni Local, and we would like you to get to know them. This month I am talking to Lauren Walters of Surrey Dog Behaviour

Supplied by: Leanna Carl and Lauren Walters

Q1: So, Lauren, have you been working with animals for a long time? A1: Yes, I’ve always loved animals. As a child we had a beautiful Leonberger, that many were scared of, due to her size. However, we took dog training classes and trained her very well. I used to help my mother, who has been a professional dog walker for years. I’ve also helped friends, who suggested I advertise what I can do, so a few years ago I made business cards and produced a Facebook page and website. Q2: What interested you most about this type of career? A2: I enjoy its many challenges, but the most rewarding aspect of my job is knowing that a well-trained, obedient dog is happy. Misbehaviour is generally a sign of unhappiness.

constantly on the lead. A good structured dog walk can fix many problems, and I can easily have a dog walking properly within a very short time, and so can an owner. Q5: What do owners not see as a disruptive behaviour? A5: One client had two beautiful dogs that barked at the washing machine every time it was on. With the correct discipline, the barking quickly stopped. People believe this behaviour should be comforted, which teaches a dog that it is okay. To correct this behaviour we need to show, with the right discipline, that it is unwanted behaviour.

Q3: What kinds of support/services do you provide? A3: I give owners and their dogs one on one support in their home, as this is where many problems arise. This starts with a free phone consultation. I will then spend several hours with the family until they are comfortable and I’ve shown them that it is possible to have a happy family - dog included.

Q6: How can our readers maintain a healthy, happy pet?

Q4: What is the most common problem you tend to encounter?

A6: The best advice I can give owners is to remember that their dogs are dogs. Many humanise their pets and baby them. Dog love is completely different and starts with exercise, discipline and then affection. Also, dogs must be walked regularly. The length depends on the breed, but all dogs must be walked at least once a day, every day.

A4: The most common problem is a dog not wanting to heel. It is understandable why some are reluctant to walk a dog that pulls

For more information visit http://www. surreydogbehaviour.co.uk/ or call Lauren on 07775995461.

I also produce a written dog pack with information tailored to the owner and their dog. I normally follow up visits a month later to ensure that problems haven’t re-surfaced.

Love Kingston Brings the Community Together There are over 400 charitable organisations, often staffed by volunteers, who are working tirelessly to provide a vital service. They are the glue in our society, and don’t have access to teams of fundraisers, or PR and Marketing machines to help them. They do, however, need to secure often small amounts of money to continue with their work. Love Kingston is a Fund of The London Community Foundation, working in partnership with Kingston Voluntary Action. We’re here to address the balance, helping to bring the community together to raise funds to support their work. We all know they are the life-blood of any thriving community and in our borough we won’t let them go un-noticed. Together we can make the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames an amazing place to live and work for everyone. Whether you are business, group, or individual, why not join our growing number of supporters - you’ll love being part of it!

COMMUNITY PERSON

Lisa Havenga – Helping Local Young People Get a Step up Onto the Career Ladder

Supplied by: Kingston Adult Education

Do you know anyone aged 16-24 who’s looking for work? If so, Lisa’s the person you need to meet. Lisa works for Kingston Adult Education, part of RBK, and her role involves encouraging local businesses to take on Apprentices, sourcing young people to fill the role. “The rate of youth unemployment is certainly decreasing, as the number of amazing and quite unique local apprenticeship opportunities increases. A recent apprentice of ours studied film studies and English at college and is now working for a reputable film company! In fact, the editor of the magazine you’re reading at the moment started off as an Apprentice on our scheme!” Over 120,000 workplaces recruit apprentices, and at any point in time there are over 8,000 live apprenticeship vacancies. An Apprenticeship allows an individual to work, earn and learn – studying towards a nationally recognised qualification. They cover over 170 skills and industries, including: Business Administration, Creative and Digital Media, Accounting and Marketing; in addition to more traditional, practical-based vocations like Hairdressing, Childcare, Engineering and Plumbing. “With the increase in University fees, and no job guarantee at the end of your studies, an Apprenticeship is an ideal way to get onto the career ladder. It’s difficult for any one to choose a career at the age of 16-18. I, like many students chose a degree based on a subject I was good at, Computing, in my case. Had I been able to try out this line of work earlier, I would have realised I didn’t necessarily have the right soft skills to perform effectively in a real working situation and on a full-time basis! More importantly, I wouldn’t have enjoyed sitting behind a PC all day.

Photo: Lisa Havenga (centre), with Jamie-Lee Bright (R) and Grace King (L), NHS Apprentices.

We place young people into various roles, to help them find out what skills they have to offer in the workplace and what kind of environment they may thrive in. I hear so many apprentices say that they’re one step ahead of some of their friends who went to university, plus they’re debt free! It’s a career, not just a job. One of our finance apprentices has secured a full-time role at the council and we’re paying for her to undertake higher level, financial-based qualifications. My ethos is very simple: How you did at school/college doesn’t necessarily concern me, and my motto is, ‘hire for attitude,’ as we’ll be training you for everything else. If you are willing to learn and can be reliable, we’d love to hear from you, as I’m sure we can help”. If you’re a local business and looking to grow in a cost effective way, it’s well worth having a chat to Lisa. Reach her via email at lisa.havenga@kingston.gov.uk or by calling 020 8547 6836.

CARE IN THE COMMUNITY

THIS MONTH’S Supplied by: Leanna Carl - Omni Local CHARITY

Do Something Nice this Father’s Day This month marks another all-important day - Father’s Day! This is the time we all get to give thanks to the most important man in our lives, and show our appreciation in whichever way fits. For some of us, we struggle to find a good way to celebrate, either because our parents don’t like to make a fuss, or because life simply gets in the way. If you need inspiration on what you could do for your dad this year, hopefully this article will help. Whether you want to make this year special for your Father, or you simply want to help your children show their love, there is plenty you can do to make it a great day to remember. Pay them a visit - Whether your father is hard to reach, or has sadly passed away, you should always keep traditions going and spend some time with them this Father’s Day, to think about the good times you’ve had together and all they’ve done for you. If this is impossible, make sure you give them a call instead. Share stories - Your elders and other-halves are guaranteed to have a virtual bank of anecdotes and life experiences to share, which they will love to pass on to their children, so why not make some time for nostalgia? A lot of laughter and knowledge can come from family gatherings like this, which you will miss when you’re older.

on. Even embarrassing snaps are a joy to revisit years from now. Have a nice meal together - For some, a pub lunch and a pint on a sunny day will be a great way to celebrate Father’s Day. You’ll know your Father’s tastes and can make a judgement call, but if he’s a bit of a foodie, why not suggest a family dinner somewhere nice? Or, whip up his favourite dinner at home? Allow for some laziness - A lot of us see “our special day” as the day where all responsibilities go out of the window, and we get to put our feet up, relax, or do the things we find fun, and lay off the chores. There is nothing wrong with that once in a while! There is no correct way to make the day special, and no set gift ideas, so spare some time to think it over, plan ahead of the day, and really show you care. Have a Happy Father’s Day.

Whatever you do, try to document it Whether you do so with a video camera, or even just your phone, capturing the events and sharing them with your loved ones will make for some great memories to look back 8

LOCAL CHARITY

Born Too Soon Born Too Soon is a registered charity (under the Umbrella of Kingston Hospital Charitable Funds -Registered No. 10565510-2), set up in 1985 by families, including Pauline Woods, whose babies were being cared for on the Neonatal Unit at Kingston Hospital.

THIS MONTH’S Supplied by: Pauline Woods - Born Too Soon CHARITY

The staff aided in setting up our charity. We aimed to make the difficult complications of having a small preterm baby or unwell newborn infant as minimal as possible. We also made sure that the Unit had the most up-to-date equipment to care for these very precious babies. We started fundraising back in 1985 with Dr. Richard Wilson MBE, a Consultant on the Unit and the Late Dr. Tessy Hanid and Sister Monica Yonge - to name but a few involved. We were able to buy state of the art oxygenmonitoring equipment. We care for up to 18 babies at a time with categories of care, 2 Intensive Care Cots, 4 High Dependency and the rest are special care. We have a dedicated team of professionals to care for the babies on the Unit. We are supported by many individuals, companies and businesses, without whom we would not be celebrating our 30th Year. The Rotary Club of Kingston have been long supporters and annually hold a Dragonboat Challenge on the Thames. We are proud to be their chosen charity for their event on 19th July, 2015. We have also been chosen by the Kingston branches of Sainsburys and Marks & Spencer. We support families every step of the way through the Neonatal Unit and for those whose babies sadly die. The team and I provide daily support. The Chaplaincy also support us, and the excellent team of midwives and Maternity Unit staff. Some babies stay a matter of hours, or in some cases, months, depending on how early they are born. We care for babies born as early as

23 weeks, weighing as little as 700 Grams, but also unwell newborn infants. Our parents group meets every week at Welcare House. We are very grateful to all our supporters and every penny counts. Last year we cared for nearly 600 babies on our unit. There are a number of items on our wish list: • A Bilisoft Device allows the baby to be held and cuddled, whilst receiving treatment. This costs £3961-00. • A humidifier is critical to the provision of safe and effective respiratory support for our babies. It costs £1,390. • A Neopuff Resuscitator helps small babies breathe effectively at birth. These cost £678 each. We would like to thank every single person who has contributed to Born Too Soon over the past 30 years. Please log onto our website: www.borntoosoon.org.uk. Our Facebook pages are Born Too Soon and The Friends of Kingston Neonatal Unit. We also have a Twitter account @ BornTooSoonKH. My email is Pauline. Woods@kingstonhospital.nhs.uk.

POLICE ADVICE Cycle Security Advice Keep your bike secure

6.

Take parts that are easy to remove with you. For example, saddles and wheels. Or use secure skewers, which can increase security by securing the bike’s components to the frame permanently, making it difficult for thieves to steal parts such as saddle or wheels.

7.

Lock your bike at recognised secure cycle parking. It should be well lit and covered by CCTV.

8.

Take the same care to lock your bike securely at home. Bikes get stolen from communal hallways, gardens and sheds.

9.

Don’t buy a stolen second-hand bike. Insist on proof of ownership and check the bike frame number at BikeRegister.

Around 20,000 bikes are reported stolen in London each year. Thieves think cycle theft is a low-risk, high-reward crime. Follow these tips to lock thieves out and ensure your bike remains safe and secure. 1.

2.

3.

Get your bike security marked and registered at BikeRegister. Getting your bike security marked and registered is a visible deterrent to bike thieves. They know that if they are caught in possession of a registered bike, the rightful owner can be traced and they will be arrested. Find out if your local Met Police Safer Transport Team has any marking events planned. Record details of your bike. Frame number (normally found underneath the bike between the pedals or where the back wheel slots in), BikeRegister number, other distinguishing features, and take a photo.

10. If your bike has been stolen, contact the police. Give them your frame number, BikeRegister number, photo and any other details.

Use locks of gold ‘Sold Secure’ standard. Also, use two different types of lock, with at least one being a high quality D-lock. It takes thieves a few seconds to cut through poor quality locks - make it as difficult for them as possible.

4.

Lock the frame and both wheels to the cycle parking stand.

5.

Make the locks and bike hard to manoeuvre. Secure your bike as close to the stand as possible.

LOCAL HISTORY

Father’s Day

Supplied by: Mike Seigel - Kingston Tour Guides

Father’s Day falls on Sunday 21 June, and this year Kingston Tour Guides are offering a special “Lads and Dads” walk through the town - treat your Dad to a tour of Kingston’s fascinating history and then take him into one of the many pubs or restaurants for lunch! Looking back through history, we should perhaps consider King John and his son, who became King Henry III. He may seem a surprising choice as an ideal father, in view of the adverse reputation he has as the wicked prince in the days of Robin Hood, and the evil and grasping king who alienated the barons, but both he and Henry III have interesting links with Kingston. This year sees the 800th anniversary of King John’s signing of the Magna Carta at Runnymede. This charter was forced upon the King by his barons, but he freely gave two charters to the town of Kingston. The first in 1200, which sadly does not survive, and a second in 1208 which does. This gave freedom to the town to administer much of its own affairs, as well as fixing rents.

minds and supported the coronation of the young Henry. They took Louis to the safety and seclusion of Ravens Ait, where he agreed to the Treaty of Kingston, conferring the throne of England to Henry. Henry, like his father, had a troubled reign and conflict with the barons, which led to the establishment of Parliament in 1265, just fifty years after the Magna Carta. So not only have these two kings important associations with Kingston, but their reigns have left an invaluable legacy to the country.

Henry III reinforced this in 1256, with another charter granting the town more freedoms, including an eight day fair around the Feast of All Souls on 1 November. Both John and Henry III feature among the key royals, on the facade above the Jack Wills shop in the Ancient Market Place. Henry was only nine when his father John died, and some barons had favoured handing the throne to Louis, the eldest son of the French King, and had invited him to invade. Yet after John’s death, they changed their

If you’d like to hear more about Kingston’s history, come along to this special walk on Father’s Day? If, however, you cannot make this one, we offer walks every Sunday during the summer, right through until the end of September - starting from the Ancient Market Place outside the Church gates at 11am. We also offer special walks by arrangement, for small or large groups. We can provide talks on the history of both Kingston and Surbiton, and these talks are very popular, especially for those people who may find walking for an hour and a half a little challenging. GARDENING SECTION

Auntie Planty’s Gardening Mailbag

Q1: How can I stop my neighbour’s cats from using our garden as a loo? A1: There is a product called Silent Roar, which claims to be an effective three month cat deterrent. It is a box full of non-toxic pellets that have been soaked in essence of lion dung, dried and then sterilized. Cats have a sense of smell that is at least 20 times greater than humans, so they will smell it and you won’t!

Q4: I have a large and rather dull, featureless lawn, and want to know what I can do to make it a little more interesting? A4: You can easily transform this with a subtle reshaping. Instead of the edges being a hard and straight line, you could easily create an elegant oval or circle shape, and allow the flower beds on either side a little more room.

The cats will think a more substantial competitor has moved in and look for easier territory elsewhere. Q2: Our new garden has a clump of bamboo. While we appreciate the screening job that it is doing, I really don’t want it running rampant through the rest of the garden. A2: One solution is to create a physical barrier, by digging down and placing some concrete slabs around the root ball. Also, if you cut the top of an emerging stem, you will stop it in its tracks. Spotting the stems early will mean an easier task, and if you can cut them at ground level, you won’t be left with a row of unwanted ‘stumps’. Q3: Our garden is south-facing and has absolutely no large plants that would give our terrace some shade. What can you suggest? A3: Shade sails are a simple shaped awning , with anchor points at each corner that you can attach to the house and fence/wall for greatest effect. When the summer has gone, you simply unhook it, and roll it up for storage until needed next year. You could visit www. primrose.co.uk and click on sail shades.

15

Use a peg and string as a ‘compass’ and mark out the desired shape using some silver sand. Cut along the line with a half moon edger, remove the excess turf and put it on the compost heap. Q5: My lilac tree has developed a lot of suckers which are now popping up all over the place. How can I get rid of them? A5: Do not use weed killer as this will only result in killing off the main plant itself. The normal advice is to cut them or pull them off as close to the point where it joins the root. This will mean digging down to find the junction. It’s better to tear away the shoot rather than use secateurs so that the majority of dormant buds are removed at the same time.

Sometimes a “Good Idea” is so good that it runs and runs. Summer, a great time of year to spend outside with the kids, for family time – often Dad time. Forget that determination to practice number bonds, times tables and handwriting – we can do that tomorrow, because today we’re having fun. Trouble is, tomorrow we don’t feel like it either! Here’s some ideas on how you can practise those basics, by stealth in the garden! Handwriting: When she was 3 or 4, my daughter’s favourite thing was painting the fence. Hours she spent, with a large brush and a bucket of water. Two years later, we painted it together, but this time we practiced forming letters. A big ‘half way round’ ‘c’ followed by an ‘o’. An ‘o’ turns easily into an ‘a’, if the side is straight, then you come down again and you add a tail. An ‘a’ is the same as a ‘d’ and a ‘g’ if you go ‘right up’ or ‘right down’. Great to get the whole arm involved and really ‘feel’ the letter. Fed up with the fence? Paint on the patio or the table with a smaller brush, chalk or even a finger, either dipped in water or traced in sand. Spellings are great practiced this way too! Tables, counting forwards or backwards, even number bonds are great when catching a ball. We all enjoy counting when we catch and throw to see how many we can ‘do’. But what about counting in 2, 3, 4 or 5? Start from 30, 50 even 100 and count back. Counting backwards – particularly from 40 to 39, 70 to 69 can be really hard. Make number bonds to 10, 15 or 20, as you throw the ball back and forth. Capacity: When it’s really hot, nothing’s better than the paddling pool. It’s great splashing, but equally satisfying filling saucepans, bowls and plastic cups of different

19

shapes and sizes. Look at the shapes. Can YOU always guess which holds most? How many teaspoons fill a cup, how many litres fill a bucket? This is even a great, practical way for your 9 or 10 year old to really a have a feel for how much a 1/3 or ½ a litre really is. Once children have come to terms with these basic facts, come along to NumberWorks’nWords and we can help them understand how to put them into context – and have fun along the way! THIS MONTH’S FEATURE

The Festival that Belongs to Kingston and Young People Everywhere!

Supplied by: Ruth Davey - Creative Youth

IYAF is now in its 7th year, and this July, things get edgier and more dynamic, as the youth are given the run of the streets! Each year, the festival invites young people to perform in Kingston. IYAF 2015 promises to be brighter, flashier and more exciting than ever. The variety of art forms on offer is staggering. From hip-hop dance and a skater fashion show, to dramatic theatre and opera, to stand-up comedy and digital art; whatever mood you’re in, there will be something for you. One of the highlights include, “Next Level”, a night with emerging artists, who are ready to step up to that next level. They’ll have the opportunity to get on stage at a professional theatre with established artists and show the audience what they’ve got. The Rose auditorium will truly be alive with the music stars of the future. That’s the way to really launch a festival! On 7th July, the patron of Creative Youth, the charity running the festival, will be joining performers, locals and special guests at the “Raise the Roof” gala night. The Earl of Wessex, Prince Edward, will be in attendance at Rose Theatre Kingston to see the cream of the festival – the very best it has to offer. Like the region’s very own Royal Variety performance, the evening will reflect the variety of art forms and styles, visible around the festival itself. John Rutter’s, “The Piper of Hamelin”, sees 65 local children cast in a spectacular production. It will be directed by worldrenowned founder of the National Youth Music Theatre, Jeremy James Taylor, who has discovered household names during his career, such as Sheridan Smith and Eddie

Redmayne. Perhaps it is a chance to see the stars of tomorrow! The production is being produced by Creative Youth, the team behind the festival, which is an exciting first for the charity. Down at Kingsfield Skatepark, the “KGames” will be an adrenalin-fuelled day out for all the family. There will be prizes available for skate, BMX, inline and scooter disciplines. And if you want to continue the high-octane programme of events, you might want to book for one of “The Movement…” events, put together by young, emerging producers. They bring together an amazing array of dance in various venues, including the streets of Kingston, where flash mobs will be taking locals by surprise. Festival Director Trevor Blackman said, “This year we really wanted to get everyone in Kingston involved; we’re getting into businesses all over the place! You could

learn from those already making it happen. People currently working in industry sectors including music, dance and digital arts will be answering the question ‘what would you tell your younger self about working in the creative industries?’ With so much fun and many frolics to be had, as well as being an educational tool for young creatives, this is a festival that shouldn’t be missed. watch a short film in the Cereal Bar, a fashion show on the riverside, some comedy at Las Iguanas and finish off with a play at the Rose… it’s going to be such an exciting festival this year, and this time it really is Kingston’s Festival!” This festival is exciting for everyone involved, and in case anyone feels inspired by events to join the creative industries, IYAF can help with that too. There will also be a series of Biography talks for those looking to

23

The festival runs from 3rd July until 19th July and will include around 150 performances across the disciplines of cabaret, comedy, theatre, dance, extreme sports, digital technology, visual arts and music, as well as a programme of workshops for smaller children and industry talks for those looking to work in creative industries. Tickets can be purchased online at www. rosetheatrekingston.org or by calling 020 8174 0090.

HEALTH & BEAUTY

5 Make-up Tips for Summer

Supplied by: Sienna Jelley - Omni Local

With a lot more sunny days on the way, it’s all about pastel tones, so keep the eye shadow light ladies! A little peachy blush never hurts either. Here are a few little tips to help with your everyday beauty routine. Tip 1.) Keep dark circles at bay. Those pesky dark marks under your eyes are a real pain when you’re trying to look more awake. Before your foundation (if you use it), put a light layer of red lipstick* over them. Blend lightly and use your foundation as normal, to even out the skintone. If you don’t use foundation, put a bit of concealer over the lipstick areas afterwards and blend. Try to use a concealer closest to your actual skin tone. *the darker your complexion, the brighter shade of red needed.

Tip 4.) Is your hair looking a bit greasy? Too late to wash it?

Tip 2.) Finding your hair sticking to your lipstick as soon as your step outside? Put a light dusting of blush* over your lipstick to matte the lips. This will also prevent smearing it or losing colour throughout the day.

An easy fix is to shake a little bit of talcum powder in your palm and sprinkle it over the greasy area. Lightly brush it in with your fingers to get rid of any white patches, and bam! - Fresher looking hair in seconds!

*use a different colour blush to your lipstick to create a unique tone.

(You can also invest in a dry shampoo spray if you prefer, but the result is the same)

Tip 3.) When doing winged eyeliner...

Tip 5.) For any contouring fanatics/newbies out there...

Keep them symmetrical by measuring from the outer corner of your eye towards the end of your eyebrow. Then mark a point on both sides as to wear your flick (or wing) will begin and end. Then make the inner corner line from the middle of your eyelash line and gradually build up the thickness (to your own liking) as you reach the outer corner of the eye.

The best tip in contouring is focusing on what you hope to highlight. For this, you’ll need lighter tones*. For anything you want to define, shape or minimise, use darker tones*. After you’ve marked out your colours -blend, blend, blend! Don’t forget your neck! Nothing ruins a perfect face like an obvious foundation-to-skin line.

(I recommend a felt-tip style eyeliner for this look)

*Light colours make things look bigger, dark colours make things look smaller.

Self-Hypnosis My work in teaching others my skills, to give talks to large and small groups, working with people on a one-to-one basis, removing phobias and fears, giving people confidence to help to facilitate change, takes me all over the world; from China to Malaysia, the Middle East to Turkey, Italy to back home in the UK.

Supplied by: Phillip Holt - NLP Now

I had been in Malaysia for two weeks, giving an in-house training session on Negotiation Skills to a large electronics company, but as soon as I had finished that, I was booked to be in Rome to give a public course in hypnosis, especially pain control to medical people. I was in pain, and tired too, when I arrived at 8pm in Fiumicino Airport, Rome. Flying in what I call “baggage class” for thirteen hours, did not sooth my already aching bones and muscles, but I had to start the course the next morning a 9am. I needed the pain and discomfort to disappear, so I could get a good nights sleep. It was time to put into practice what I was to teach, self hypnosis, and to wake-up at 7:30am to prepare for the course. I placed myself in a trance, and gave my brain the suggestions to sooth my aches and pains and to wake me up at 7:30am. Oh, and give me some great dreams. At 7:15am I was awake. How many of us awaken before the alarm clock goes off? I would say the majority of us do. Is it conditioning? I doubt it, as my body clock was on Malaysian time, a time difference of 6 hours. What wakes us up then? Our subconscious mind does. At 9:30am I opened the course, and none of the participants knew that the previous day, I had been on the other side of the world. I was refreshed and with no pain.

By teaching the participants in Rome what hypnosis is, how to hypnotise, to use the imagination to remove pain by inducing anaesthesia to a particular area or the whole body, their work with their patients and clients will be greatly enhanced, giving relief and a speeding recovery. Self hypnosis can be easily learnt, because all hypnosis is self hypnosis. I cannot hypnotise some of the participants in the many foreign countries I visit, as I do not speak their language, yet they enter into very deep trances, fully in control of their own well being, learning how they can do the same themselves after I have gone to fulfil their desires. If you would like a consultation, book a session with me by calling 0845 130 6213. Do it now. www.nlpnow.net

By learning how we can relax, meditate, become mesmerised, go into a trance, use hypnosis, they are basically all the same, we can suggest to our inner mind, the subconscious to achieve the outcomes we desire, and if your belief is strong enough, it will happen.

DIY SECTION

DIY Gardening Go-Tos With a lot more sunshine out to play, and no more frosty conditions wreaking havoc on your plants, now is as good a time as any to ensure that your garden is in top shape. Below are some ideas on what to keep an eye on.

Supplied by: Leanna Carl - Omni Local

General upkeep of your lawn Your lawn is the centrepiece of your garden, and you’ll therefore want to do your best to keep it fresh and green all year round. Remember to feed your lawn regularly, even if it means mowing more to keep it in check! It may be worth seeking advice from your local gardening centre or hardware store on the best product to fit your needs. Make sure you raise the blades on your lawn mower in order to give the grass a chance to grow with a little extra length, any time the weather seems to be a lot drier than usual. Even if your grass is browning, it will soon green up again once the rain reappears. Encouraging flowering A sprinkling of colour throughout your garden will always brighten it up, for guests or for the family. By trimming off any early-flowering perennials, you could guarantee some lovely late flowerings as Summer comes to an end. As long as you consistently remove the heads of any faded or wilting blooms, your plants will naturally produce more flowers. You can also give them a helping hand by pruning after a quick trimming and giving them plenty of water/food as applicable - especially with potted plants, which may not naturally receive the nutrients they need.

30

Pond maintenance If you’ve got a pond in your garden, make sure you take care of it, as it does require a bit of TLC once in a while. Try not to let any dead leaves fall into the water, as this can pollute and disturb the overall environment. You may need to occasionally skim the surface with a net or an alternative object if you’ve got a tree towering over the pond. You should also look out for yellowing leaves if you have water lilies and be sure to remove them as soon as possible. You may also need to top up the water level from time to time, as additional heat this time of year can lead to more rapid evaporation, however, try to avoid using tap water, as the chemicals can upset the natural balance and harm any aquatic life. There are plenty of other ways to enhance your garden area, and make use of the space such as patio installations, hanging baskets and planting herbs or vegetables, so get creative and don’t let the space go to waste!

MOTORING SECTION

More Tips for Those Tyres!

Supplied by: Leanna Carl-Omni Local

We want to help you get the best out of your vehicles, and help them maintain a much longer and more cost-effective life. Below are some more guidelines to preventing issues through general tyre maintenance. Rotation isn’t everything A lot of tyre manufacturers agree that you shouldn’t rotate your tyres these days. This is because partially worn tyres are more prone to puncturing, and because your vehicle will be easier to control in the case of an unexpected front tyre deflation. Sometimes a replacement isn’t your best option Tyre repairs can be a better option for you, provided that it is checked over by a specialist and deemed repairable. Tyres should not be repaired, however, if they begin to show signs of deterioration. If a tyre is cracked, has exposed cords or has a tread of 1.6mm or less, there isn’t a very high chance that a repair will help at all. Spare tyres are a necessity The last thing you need on a long journey (or even a short one!) is for one of your tyres to let you down, and having a back up can be a lifesaver. Make sure you keep an eye on where you keep your tools, such as a car jack and wrench, and ensure you’ve got a pair of gloves in the boot, as changing a tyre isn’t the cleanest job. Balancing Wheels When wheels aren’t properly balanced, driving can become a bit more uncomfortable and can become more costly for your vehicle. 33

It can also cause premature wear of your steering components and rotating parts if you don’t ensure that your tyres are even. Fitting Valves Valves are an important part of a wheel, despite how small they are. Not only does it help to regulate tyre pressure, but it helps to contain pressure inside the wheel. These valves can become damaged over time, and will therefore benefit from regular replacements whenever a new tyre is fitted. Keeping the valves clean will increase their lifespan a little longer. Have your tyres checked by a professional It is never a bad idea to seek the advice and opinions from your local professional, especially if you don’t have a lot of time to inspect your tyres yourself. During an MOT, the tyre tread marks should be checked, as well as the sizing and structure of each tyre. Some tyre problems can cause your MOT test to fail. Never neglect vehicle check-ups, and drive safely.

OUR NEW BUSINESS SECTION

Staff – who needs them? During a recent meeting with a new client, the subject of staff came up. I got the same view I often get from employers: that the staff they employ don’t know what they are doing, don’t seem to do a great deal, so much so that they (the employer) has to do their work, and in the end they either leave or are let go. This is not an uncommon situation, and if you are indeed an employer, you may even have experienced it yourself. However, the odds of employing a great member of staff can be greatly improved with just a little thought and planning. You see, most people, like another client of mine, when they get too busy, they think a new member of staff is the answer and probably in most cases it is. But only if it’s the right member of staff and for the right reasons.

Supplied by: David Wimblett of 7 Training

You see, this is another reason why new staff fail. It’s not that they are lazy, it’s just that their boss keeps on doing what they always have, leaving the new member of staff nothing to do. On other occasions the employer does nothing useful with their extra hours, and so nothing changes within the company; they are just as busy. The key to finding the right staff is to know exactly what their duties will be, before you start looking for them. And to know what you and other staff won’t be doing once they are employed, together with what you and any other staff will be doing with your extra time.

So when my client announced that he was going to employ a new person, I asked, “Why?” The answer was because they needed more hands. Again, I asked “Why?” You see the problem was, that yes they needed more staff, but they didn’t really know what exactly they needed them for.

In this way, everyone will know what they are doing and what is expected of them. I promise that if you get this right, it will make a marked difference to staff morale, staff retention and the success of your business.

This is why many new staff fail - they don’t have a full and clear job description. It took two hours, but finally we worked out precisely what this new member of staff was required to do, but then came the really tough part. What did that mean that my client wouldn’t be doing in future and, more importantly, what would they be doing instead?

What happened to the person my client employed? He went on to manage a new office for my client.

Post-Election Update The doors to the prime property market have been flung wide open again. Millions of pounds worth of deals have been done across London and the home counties, since the result that the Conservatives would be re-elected. Property Industry Eye stated that, ‘Friday 8th May is likely to go down in the industry annals as the day that the prime market came out of purgatory. Many Central London agents started work at around dawn, when it was becoming clearer by the minute that the Tories would win, and then worked late into the evening. requirements for new sales properties. Competition to purchase is only going to increase as the current lack of good quality stock diminishes. NOW REALLY IS A GOOD TIME TO PUT YOUR HOUSE ON THE MARKET, IF YOU INTEND TO SELL IN THE COMING YEAR.

There has also been a noticeable increase in the number of people registering their 37

It is predicted that property prices in central London could shoot up 10% between now and the end of this year. After the 2010 election, property prices increased by an amazing 17% in the first year. One interesting side effect that I have noticed is that a number of people who were looking to rent in the £2000 plus market are now looking to buy instead, believing that now is the right time to get into the housing market before it goes too far out of reach for most normal, salaried families. An interesting summer awaits us all.
