ou don’t have to be a Boy Scout to make a good fire in your fireplace.

You just have to use a tried and trusted method.

Let us assume that you’ve had your chimney inspected and cleaned so that there’s no buildup of flammable creosote to worry about and you have taken the old ashes to your compost pile and your fireplace is now clean and ready to begin.

Firstly, look up your chimney to make sure the damper is open. A ‘throat damper’ is located at the bottom of the chimney and will open with a lever. If you have a ‘top damper,’ which is located at the top of the chimney (obviously), then you will be able to open it by pulling a chain or cable.

Ensure you have already cleared the hearth of anything flammable. Now crumple 2 or 3 sheets of newspaper and put them in your fireplace grate.

The fireplace grate enables your fire to pull in the air it needs to keep a good draft going up the chimney. Put a good handful of kindling strips on top of the paper. On top of the kindling, criss-cross 8 or 10 dry pieces of hardwood. These pieces need to be larger than kindling but not as big as u

Supongamos que ya la tiene preparada: ha deshollinado y comprobado el conducto de humos, y no queda rastro de los tan temidos como inflamables residuos de creosota. Ha barrido las cenizas y las ha depositado en el montón del compost. En suma, su chimenea está limpia y a punto para un nuevo invierno.

Crumple two more sheets of newspaper and light them, holding them up inside the fireplace to warm the flue and establish an upward flow of air.

Then light the paper in your fireplace grate from each end. When the paper lights the kindling, and the kindling lights the hardwood, it’s time to add 2 or 3 logs.

Place the logs toward the rear of the fireplace so it will reflect heat into the room as it burns. As the fire gets established, you can add more logs.

Place your fireplace screen or spark guard in front of your fire to protect your family and home from stray sparks, loose logs or even log fragments that may fall out of the fire.

With practice, you will use just enough logs so that the fire burns down to 08 OCIO magazine

Remember to use just enough softwood for kindling to get the fire going.

Commercial fire starters can take the place of kindling. For logs, use dry hardwood (oak, maple, cherry, hickory or olive). The ideal firewood has dried for about one year. Don’t burn plastics or paper with colour printing, such as magazine pages or gift wrap, because they may give off toxins. And finally, no matter what, never use flammable liquids in your fireplace. A well lit fire will add a warmth and cosiness to any room. Be safe and sensible and your fire will be enjoyed by all during the winter months. n

Entonces es el momento de meter los troncos más gruesos. Es conveniente ubicarlos al fondo de la chimenea para que hagan de pared reflectante e irradien más calor a la sala.

Una vez hemos conseguido una candela consistente, se irá añadiendo más madera. No olvide poner la pantalla de contención o salva-chispas, para evitar que las ascuas salten y puedan provocar algún accidente doméstico.

No quemes plásticos o papel impreso a color, como revistas o envoltorios, ya que desprenden tóxicos en el ambiente.

Y, por último, nunca, bajo ningún concepto, utilices o tengas líquidos inflamables cerca de la chimenea.

Un fuego confortable y duradero, aportará calidez y bienestar a cualquier hogar. Sé cauto y hazlo de forma prudente, y ten por seguro que todos se arrimarán a su abrigo en los meses más fríos del invierno. n

Cluster them, use a variety of heights, use a variety of scents, use unscented and get some stylish candle holders … but more important is the fun ways that you can decorate with candles in every room of your house!

In the kitchen...

Sprinkle around the room to create a romantic dinner setting, use colours and shapes to match your kitchen’s contemporary or vintage design, use them in a centerpiece on your dinner table or maybe even have a light fixture made from some creamy wax.

ith the winter almost upon us, it is time to organise ourselves for those chilly days and colder nights. However, staying stylish in winter is not as easy as it is in summer and, showing off your style while still staying warm can be a challenge. After all, it’s tough to see your outfit when it’s covered up by a big jacket. What’s a stylish girl to do?

Don’t worry, you don’t have to forgo looking good to keep from getting cold.

There are many ways to dress so you can stay warm and still show off your fashion sense, and none of them require breaking the bank. Here are some tips for braving the cold and still looking hot: Invest in a classic and stylish coat.

Your coat is the most important part of your winter wardrobe, so invest in a fabulous one that will last you many years.

Remember, if you are making a long term investment then be careful of choosing a coat that is too modern that may go out of style before it needs replacing. Pick one up in black if you want a basic coat that goes with everything, but don’t be afraid to invest in something a little flashier if you find one in an amazing shade of red or

For example, I have one basic black coat for everyday that I spent a little more on, and a cheaper cobalt blue “statement” coat for nights out or whenever I feel like standing out a little more.

Winter shawl If you find a winter coat just too bulky then go for a stylish shawl. A good quality shawl will keep you every bit as warm as a coat but can look so much more stylish.

he secret to sculpting a firm, toned and strong body is constantly varying your workouts so your muscles and mind won’t get bored.

To help you ease into your new fitness groove, I have rounded up everything you need so you don’t feel like the only new kid in class.

The best spot for newbies is towards the back. Most instructors walk around during class, adjusting form which means they aren’t demonstrating every move.

By setting up towards the back of the room, you can keep your eyes on more experienced classmates.

There are as many different styles and formats of yoga as there are personalities, and before you settle into a regular routine, test out a few different classes 30 OCIO magazine

to find the right match for you. Vinyasa (also commonly referred to as “power yoga” classes) is the fluid, dynamic style that combines a series of postures with breathwork. Bikram is a specific sequence of poses performed in a heated room, Jivamukti is more of a meditative-based practice that includes lots of chanting, Iyengar stresses alignment (you can spend a whole class on just a few poses) and uses various props and Hatha is a more gentle, classical practice.

The Equipment: Skip the loose clothes and opt for tighter-fitting apparel. This will help prevent any unwanted exposure during inversions, and will allow your instructor to keep tabs on your form and alignment so you can maximise the time you spend on the mat. Most yoga classes

don’t involve plyometric exercises so you can wear a comfortable, low-to-medium support sports bra. Bottom line: When you put on you apparel ask yourself two things, can I see my form and can I bend, lunge and stretch comfortably? If you answered yes to both, you’re good to go.

Look for a yoga mat that has good grip (to help prevent slips) and cushioning to support your joints and make for a comfier practice. Yoga straps assist with stretches, even if you aren’t naturally flexible, and if you’re taking a hot yoga class, placing a towel over your mat will help prevent slips while also protecting the durability of your mat.

Finally: Enjoy it. Sure there is a lot to learn and it may feel as though you just don’t get it…but you will. Be gentle on yourself, relax

he average person gets two or three colds every year. And while a cold won’t kill you, it suppresses the immune system enough so that more serious problems can ensue. Colds are passed on in two ways; by inhaling the cold virus from someone who has it, or by touching respiratory secretions (sneeze stuff for example) through hand to hand contact or a surface like a doorknob, and then touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Flu can affect 20 to 50 percent of the population each year.

It’s very contagious and is mostly spread by direct person-to-person contact. A flu virus can linger in the air for three hours and in close quarters, like classrooms or work spaces, transmission is high. But you can fight against it if you are prepared and well informed. Here are some tips and advice to help you through the cold and flu season.

At the very first hint of a cold or flu, take action. Zinc in the form of lozenges can be very effective, along with numerous other symptomatic relief products. Take the herb astragalus twice a day until you are better. Also, Echinacea will help reduce the duration of a cold - and don’t forget about the chicken soup - yes, chicken soup, it really is more than just an old wives tale.

Wash your hands often. This is the most common recommendation, and for good reason. You can reduce the likelyhood of getting a cold by 45% if you simply keep your hands clean. Clean under your finger nails too, lots of germs get stuck there. And whilst washing your hands, wash them twice! Research has shown that two hand washings in a row were better than using anti-bacterial soap.

Rub your eyes with a knuckle. Eyes are an entry point for germs and you’re less likely 34 OCIO magazine

to have virus germs on your knuckles than your fingers. You will be surprised to know that the average person rubs their eyes or nose around 30 times a day.

Keep your house cooler. Keeping your home too hot dries the air making breeding easier for cold viruses. It also dries out your mucous membranes which in turn makes it easier for those viruses to grow inside your nose. So open up a window and let in some fresh winter air, but don’t get cold.

Take a weekly sauna. People who sauna have half the number of colds, it’s true.

Researchers believe that the hot air generated by a sauna, kills viruses. Many health club and sports centres have a sauna, so form a new habit this winter and take a regular sauna.

And finally, meditate. Stress lowers your immune system, allowing illness to take over. Take time out of your busy day to

he route of administration of a medication is the way it reaches our body, how it is introduced into the body. On this occasion we are going to emphasise and remember the importance of knowing how to understand what each type of administration route means, of course placing special emphasis on the Topical Route.

The topical route is that which is applied to the skin and mucous membranes.

These are found in the nose, mouth, lungs, digestive tract, and urinary and genital tracts.

Topical administration refers to the application of a drug (ointment, gel, oil, etc.) on the surface of the body such as the skin and mucous membranes, to treat ailments using a wide range of products.

It is highly recommended since absorption of the active matter is increased by the rich vascularisation, which produces a better 38 OCIO magazine

systemic effect.

This means that we must understand that when a product is indicated for topical use, generally, it can be used on both mucous membranes and skin.

In the topical route, the medication is applied directly to the area where it usually takes effect (the skin or mucous membranes). The creams are administered cutaneously, on the skin.

The cutaneous route (or topical itself): the drug is applied to the skin seeking a local effect, such as creams, ointments, patches, dressings, rich in cannabinoids and with a team of professionals to advise you.

In the specific case of the use of CBD and other cannabinoids, the most used route of administration therapeutically is the sublingual route, followed by inhalation and the topical route.

he number of dog food products on the market can make it very confusing for you to choose a diet that is appropriate for your pet. Not only are there tons of different brands and ingredients, but even the most basic choice of wet versus dry food can be overwhelming.

Both dry dog food and wet dog food can provide nutritionally balanced diets, but the major difference is in the way they are processed. Wet food starts with grinding the protein sources, or meat ingredients. Then a gravy that contains vitamins, minerals, and grains is added.

Once those are mixed, the food is cooked and sterilised to produce the canned product. As a result, wet food has a much higher moisture content than dry food.

Dry food contains very similar ingredients, but instead of adding gravy and canning the product, the meat mixture is pulverised in order to create a consistent dough that can be cooked. Once cooked, the dough is extruded through specifically shaped holes to form kibble. The kibble undergoes a drying process, and then is sprayed with fats, oils, vitamins, and minerals and packaged before the fats and oils can spoil. Some dry dog food diets also add live probiotics to aid in digestive and immune health.

Both types of dog food are good choices, but each has their own benefits and drawbacks depending on the nutritional needs of your pet.

Mixing wet and dry dog food is another option that may provide the best of both worlds. However, it is very important to ensure you are still providing the proper daily feeding amount to prevent overfeeding.

The best way to do this is to have your local vet calculate your furry friend’s daily calorie requirements for maintenance. Then you can calculate how much dry and wet food your dog should have each day to reach that number of calories—and don’t forget to factor in any calories from treats. n

here are a lot of things that happen from the time you peel your golf club back to the moment the head makes contact with the ball.

Simplifying or shortening your swing length with a half swing can be key to finding the most important element to your game: consistency.

Mastering the half swing, which tops out around belt-high, can lead to better ball contact and better control of your shots, which will shave strokes off of your score.

The half swing is the building block to the full swing and, there are so many benefits to taking it out onto the golf course and actually playing with that kind of condensed motion.

Think about your golf swing as a clock, with 12:00 above your head and 6:00 at your feet. When you make a half swing, your club will stop at 9:00 on your backswing and 3:00 on your followthrough. Think about keeping the club centered on the midline of your body and rotating your hips and shoulders to move the club, without hinging the wrists or breaking the elbows. Once you get the

feel of the motion and you can do it with control, you can incorporate some wrist hinge.

It’s logical that when you make a smaller swing, fewer things can go wrong. The motion is very controllable, so it’s easier to gain more of an awareness of where the club face is and make better contact.

Practicing the half swing allows you to work specifically on your positioning through the impact zone, which is when it matters most.

Because a square, solid hit always delivers more distance and power than a miss-hit, you might actually notice the shots you take with a half swing are going farther than ones you take with a full swing. You gain the benefits of proper positioning and can often generate more speed and power than you can with a full swing.

ay muchas cosas que suceden desde el momento en que se levanta el palo de golf hasta el momento en que la cabeza hace contacto con la bola. Simplificar o acortar la longitud

de su swing, con un medio swing, puede ser clave para encontrar el elemento más importante de su juego: la consistencia.

Dominar el medio swing, que tiene su punto máximo a la altura del cinturón, puede conducir a un mejor contacto con la bola y a un mejor control de los golpes, lo que reducirá los tiros de la puntuación.

f you can live with the relatively small rear seats, then the Jeep Avenger is a great little electric SUV. It offers head-turning looks and a long driving range, while the compact dimensions mean it’s more suited to the cut and thrust of urban driving than the overlanding trails that Jeep is synonymous with. This top-spec Summit edition looks pricey, but it’s packed with kit.

It’s not far off the mark to say that the Jeep Avenger is a significant model for the US firm. While the company is known for its off-road exploits, the Avenger is tasked with changing perceptions of the brand as an electric car maker. If this was to be achieved by its looks alone, then the Avenger would be on to a winner.

The Avenger features short overhangs front and rear, chunky wheelarches and boxy lines that pay homage to Jeep’s heritage, while 200mm of ground 46 OCIO magazine

clearance mean it should be able to cope with some off-road action: while the Avenger is only front-wheel drive at launch, it comes with off-road drive modes and hill-descent control. A fourwheel drive option is due to arrive in 2024.

One area where the Avenger differs is in terms of its size. At 4,084mm, it’s nearly 220mm shorter than an e-2008, and compares more favourably with conventional superminis than rival small SUVs. Still, the car’s packaging means that there’s good space up front, while only tall passengers will be asking for more legroom in the back. Boot space is a respectable 355 litres.

The cabin layout is pretty funky, too. There are hard plastics, but these have been used in the Avenger’s favour, and give it a rugged feel that’s becoming of Jeep’s off-road heritage. Storage is good, while the flip-top lid for the central storage bin is

a neat addition.

Under the skin, the Avenger uses the latest model 54kWh battery that is good for a range of 249 miles in the Avenger, and is connected to a 154bhp electric motor.

On the move, the Jeep Avenger is a decent performer. The electric motor responds well, with enough low-speed acceleration to sprint away briskly from the lights, although performance does tail off the faster you go.

If you need sharper responses, then Sport mode offers maximum power, but it introduces a snappy throttle that’s harder to modulate. Sport mode also trims around 11 miles off the car’s range.

The tall ride height gives a good view out, and the suspension has been set up to limit the amount of pitch and roll the Avenger exhibits. However, this doesn’t have a negative impact on the ride. Overall u

Un área donde el Avenger se diferencia es el tamaño. Con 4,084mm, es casi 220mm más corto que el e-2008, más comparable a los superminis convencionales que a otros SUVs ligeros. A kerbweight of 1.5 tonnes means this electric SUV is relatively light, so it offers pretty nimble handling. Combine this with its compact dimensions, and an exterior that’s been designed to take knocks and bumps in its stride, and the Avenger makes a strong case for itself as an urban runabout.

The top-spec Summit model that we drove, comes with plenty of kit, but has a price tag nudging £40k before options. That’s similar to the more spacious Peugeot e-2008, but still less than you’ll pay for small premium EVs from the likes of Audi, Mercedes or Lexus. n

chill is in the air, leaves on the trees have turned bright orange and red, and my local market is bursting with squash and citrus. Autumn has come to Spain! And with the brisk autumn air comes a bounty of hearty vegetables, fresh seafood and delicious fruits.

In this richly agricultural country, eating seasonally is a pillar of the cuisine. Since the majority of the foods eaten in Spain are also grown here, you’ll usually only find foods that are in-season on grocery store shelves and restaurant menu’s.

For the month of November, that means not only typical autumn fruits and vegetables, but also the tastiest of seafood.

One of the absolute best things about November in Spain for me is the mushrooms. Restaurants across the country showcase the huge variety of wild Spanish mushrooms on special mushroom centred menu’s. Here in Andalusia alone, there are at least 50 different types of wild mushrooms to forage for. Many of these wild mushrooms can only be found during October and November, so enjoy as many of them as possible this month!

The chirimoya is originally from the Peruvian Andes, where native growers call this seemingly tropical fruit semillas frias or “cold seeds” because it likes the cold heights of the mountains.

Chirimoyas were brought to Europe

by Spanish explorers. Spain is now the world’s top chirimoya producer. growing about 50,000 chirimoyas per year. Most are grown in the Malaga and Granada regions where the mountains offer cool relief from the strong Mediterranean sun.

A relatively new addition to Spanish cuisine is the kiwi fruit. This delightful fruit didn’t make it to Spain until the 1960s, but they have quickly become a fruit bowl staple. Kiwi vines now streak across the trellises of Spain’s northern provinces from Galicia to the Basque Country. Kiwi’s have amazing timing when it comes to their ripening schedule. Just as the season’s start to change, causing mass winter colds across the country, vitamin C packed kiwis come into season. Kiwi’s have more than 1.5 times as much vitamin C as an orange. Thus I eat them like popcorn every November in the hope that they will ward off those pesky winter colds.

For a more versatile, all natural anti cold remedy I turn to oranges, a fruit I would happily nominate at Spain’s national fruit.

Oranges have been growing in Spain since the 10th century and the country now grows more than any other country in Europe (more than 3 tons per year!).

Oranges are so popular in Spain that they even have their own Denomination of Origin Control zone, much like wine or olive oil. Only Valencian oranges, which are produced according to strict quality standards in the region of Valencia, which is Spain’s largest orange producing region, can carry this prestigious DOC label.

The famous White Christmas song lyric of chestnuts roasting on an open fire, could easily have been written with Spain in mind. Las chirimoyas fueron traídas a Europa por los exploradores españoles.

November is also prime artichoke time.

Grilled with garlic, roasted with bacon, stuffed with cheese… no matter how Spanish artichokes are prepared, they are amazing. Crates of fresh artichokes from Murcia, Valencia, Navarra and Tarragona flood grocery stores, fruit stands and even food trucks across the country this month.

Look for them on restaurant menus as well right up until March.

T

he title for “the hottest chilli pepper” is something that is challenged more often than you may expect.

Every year, hot pepper cultivators find a new mix of hybrid, soil, and temperature to create peppers that will combat for the top position. The competition is fierce.

The Guinness Book Of World Records are the official adjudicators and have a grading system in place which is based on the potential peak heat of the pepper, via their total ‘Scoville Heat Units’ - referred to as (SHU). Scoville heat units, are simply a measurement of the number of times capsaicin needs to be diluted by sugarwater. The number of Scoville Heat Units in a pepper or even hot sauce indicates the amount of capsaicin present. The higher the Scoville rating, the hotter the pepper.

To give this measurement some meaning, consider that a general jalapeño pepper carries a SHU of around 2,500 to 5,000 units whilst the once hot pepper champ The Ghost Pepper carries a measurement of around 1,000,000 units! It really says a u

These peppers are hot beyond all comprehension, and, as such, they must be handled carefully and with respect. If you’re going to dance with the devil, wear kitchen gloves, eye goggles, and take great care throughout the cooking process. .

At number 5 we have the ‘Dorset Naga’ with a rating of 1,000,000 to 1,598,227 Scoville heat units.

The Dorset Naga was developed by choosing the seeds of the best possible Naga Morich chillies, creating a popular pepper in itself with a little extra heat.

to a chocolate-brown and has more of a sweet and nutty flavour than fruity.

At number 3 we have the ‘Trinidad Moruga Scorpion’ with a rating of 1,200,000 to 2,000,000 Scoville heat units Sporting a killer name, the Trinidad Moruga Scorpion is from Trinidad and Tobago and gets its name from its scorpion-like “tail” that looks like the stinger of, you guessed it, a scorpion. Its heat at its potential peak can be hotter than many pepper sprays.

At number 2 we have the ‘Komodo Dragon Pepper’ with a rating of 1,400,000 to 2,200,000 Scoville heat units.

The Komodo Dragon has face melting spiciness. There’s a sneaky sweet heat to this super-hot pepper – like the ghost pepper it’s a slow burn that doesn’t hit you upon the first bite, but builds over time into a firestorm. Interestingly, the Komodo Dragon chili is unique in the fact that it has found its way onto a major supermarket’s shelves. It’s sold at various TESCO stores in the United Kingdom. u

It’s a United States hot pepper variety from South Carolina. The Carolina Reaper has a fruitiness to it, and the PuckerButt Pepper Company (the growers behind the Reaper) have grown it to be a super-hot that doesn’t skimp on overall flavour.
