There are many methods for setting up hammocks, each with its own benefits and disadvantages. The method you choose ultimately depends on how you plan to use your hammock and whether you have a permanent or temporary set-up in mind. Hammocks make use of several types of hardware suspensions, including ring buckles, finger nines, j-hook wall anchors, large s-hooks, and lengths of chain. However, if you plan to hang your hammock between a couple of trees, then you will need rope instead of hardware so you do not damage the trees during hanging and staging. Rope is the traditional method for securing a hammock in place, but you’ll need a few knot-tying skills to ensure a good hold.

You don’t want to set things up too tightly, though. The tighter you pull your hammock, the greater the force will be on the suspension and anchor points. Finally, when hanging hammocks without a spreader bar, make sure your hammock has a loose curve. Hanging loose will allow you to lie in your hammock at an angle and get flat for a comfortable, back-friendly sleep. If all of this seems a little too much trouble for you, then simply invest in a hammock stand. Hammock stands are ideal for gardens, terraces and patios. These stands are easy to set up and can be moved

anywhere you want or need, for the most part. Their size can be a bit cumbersome to transport, and disassembling these stands for a camping trip can be time-consuming. If you’ve got the space, though, a hammock stand gives you a ton of freedom and flexibility with setting up the perfect space to relax.

Thanks for joining us today, Rachel. You recently had solar panels installed by Yuren Energia. Can you start by telling us what motivated you to make the switch to solar?
Customer (Rachel): Absolutely. My main motivation was reducing our electricity bills and doing something positive for the environment. Sunglasses ...why do we need them?

SinceI’m a borderline idiot, I went my first 28 years without wearing sunglasses. Sure, I bought several pairs of fake Oakleys, who didn’t, but that was just to look cool. Aside from the cool factor, I never found sunglasses entirely helpful. I could squint my way through any bright days while avoiding the dreaded sunglasses tan. That is, until I started getting headaches. All because I didn’t wear sunglasses for the first 28 years of my life. Sunglasses look cool, or at least they should, since there are billions to choose from. But aside from all that, why do you actually need sunglasses? Well, there are three main reasons we must protect our eyes. The first is the retina inside the eye. With age, people can develop macular degeneration (which is the light-sensitive nerve tissue in the eye), and using sunglasses may protect these photoreceptors from UV damage. The second is the lens of the eye; everyone eventually will develop clouding of the lens, which is what you know as a cataract. Protecting the eye from sunlight may slow the progression of cataracts. Lastly, skin cancer on the eyelids is a concern. Protection from sun exposure is recommended to prevent this condition.
Like your sunscreen, sunglasses should have both UVA and UVB protection, since these are two different types of ultraviolet waves and require different defences. (UVA rays will progress signs and conditions of
ageing. UVB rays can cause cancer.)
The colour of your lenses is not relevant. Darker glasses are not necessarily better. Polarised lenses are helpful in that they reduce glare, which is caused by light reflecting off a smooth or flat surface like a car bonnet or water in a pool or the sea. So, go for polarised lenses wherever possible, and double-check to make sure they’re equipped with broad-spectrum UVA and UVB protection, as it is not always the case.

Beat the heat
Thesummer heat has now well and truly arrived. So, what can you do to keep your dogs comfortable and cool this summer and avoid them overheating?
Dogs are crepuscular, naturally most active at dawn and dusk, so it makes perfect sense to avoid the heat of the day and walk them very early or very late in the day when the temperatures are cooler. If you’re not an early riser or perhaps you work hours that are irregular, then it won’t harm your dog to skip some walks. It’s important, though, to work their brain, instead of their body, with a few 5-minute training sessions and food toys. You can even bring the walk to them! When you go out, bring back some objects for them to sniff; leaves, sticks, animal fur, feathers, a blanket that your friend’s pet has lain on, some flowers or herbs, or a small random object left by the bins! You’re only limited by your imagination.
Keep your dogs calm, avoid throwing toys and balls or encouraging them to run around in the heat. Consider providing them with a paddling pool or a cool mat in addition to a variety of shady spots in which to lie during the day. You may need to be their advocate and encourage them out of the sun if they are a sun worshipper. Entice them into the shade with some homemade frozen ice cube treats or a Kong® filled with food and then frozen.

Located at the far end of Torre del Mar, in the direction of Almayate, behind the feria ground and Camping La Laguna, is the fabulous La Terraza de Mangoa.
Traditionally a venue for weddings and other celebrations, this beautiful beachfront terrace and garden opens each summer as a restaurant and beach club.
The menu is an eclectic mix of local, Mediterranean and international cuisines, prepared using only the finest and freshest ingredients, all of which are sourced locally where possible. The menu features sharing platters, individual dishes, smaller dishes and ‘tapas’. A highlight of the menu is the fresh fish and seafood cooked over the burning logs in the shade of the pretty gardens, offering not only that delicious taste to your food but also a great photo opportunity for the many visitors amongst us this month.
As well as the regular service and menu, La Terraza de Mangoa offers themed dinners and parties throughout the summer, which include Mexican, Oriental and Indian, plus special flamenco and tapas nights. Traditionally speaking, putting ice in your glass of bubbles is simply not the done thing. However, attitudes towards wine, whether with or without bubbles, have shifted somewhat as a younger audience embraces this classic drink as a drink for all occasions, not just for special occasions. With all of that said, it doesn’t mean that you should put ice into any Cava or Champagne. All wines are carefully blended to achieve the perfect balance, and adding ice dilutes it and changes the flavours. So what is needed is a special blend of Cava and Champagne that not only will survive the addition of ice to the glass, but will actually thrive on the addition. The result is the “ice” selection. So, where did the idea of the “ice’ brand start and who was the first to create this new trend? Well, after spending his summers in France observing even the most elegant travellers putting ice in his perfectly blended Champagne, Moët & Chandon’s Chef de Cave, Benoît Gouez, decided to create a cuvée, the first in the world, specifically designed to be drunk on the rocks. Moët & Chandon Ice Impérial and Ice Impérial Rosé are more concentrated than traditional Champagne and have a higher dosage (sugar content). The result is more aromatic and sweeter than Brut Champagne. This means it doesn’t just stand up to being diluted by ice; it was actually designed with melting ice as an ingredient.
A few years later, Veuve Clicquot introduced Veuve Clicquot Rich, which is also designed for ice dilution, but goes a step further and can be used in cocktails or garnished with fruit. Not to be outdone by their French counterparts, the Cava creators have also blended ice editions with the very same results in mind. One of the more popular is the Freixenet Ice. This particular Cava has been created not only to be enjoyed with ice in a balloon glass, but it can also be mixed with other flavours like raspberry, kiwi, lime, or lemon. This

cava is elaborated through a blend of Macabeo, Xarel. Lo and Parellada wines, with a touch of Chardonnay, have a fine and elegant bubble in addition to a fruity aroma.
Another cava brand that has joined the cava on ice trend is Codorniu. It does so with the ‘Anna Codorniu Sweet Edition’ line, a sweeter version of its product that allows for different combinations. Among them, one of the most successful and recommended ones is serving cava in a wide glass with plenty of ice.
As for me, well, to be perfectly honest, the idea of putting ice in my glass of Cava did take a little time to get used to, especially as I prefer my Cava and Champagne to be very dry, and the ice editions are sweeter by design. However, there is a certain charm to the concept and on a hot summer’s day, it is a perfectly enjoyable drink. My only note about ice in Cava and Champagne is that it is better if the ice is made from filtered or bottled water because, when the ice melts, it will impart the flavours of the ice into the wine. n

Sin embargo, la actitud hacia el vino, ya sea con o sin burbujas, va cambiando a medida que un público más joven, adopta esta bebida clásica como una bebida para cualquier ocasión, no sólo ocasiones especiales. Entonces, ¿dónde surgió la idea de la marca “ice” y quién fue el primero en crear esta nueva tendencia? Pues bien, después de pasar sus veranos en Francia, observando cómo los viajeros más elegantes ponían hielo en su Champagne perfectamente mezclado, el Chef de
Cave de Moët & Chandon, Benoît Gouez, decidió crear una cuvée, la primera del mundo, diseñada específicamente para ser bebida con hielo. Moët & Chandon Ice Impérial y Ice Impérial Rosé son más concentrados que el Champagne tradicional y tienen un mayor contenido de azúcar. El resultado es más aromático y dulce que el Champagne Brut. Esto significa que no sólo admite ser diluido por hielo, sino que fue diseñado con el hielo derretido como ingrediente.
Unos años más tarde, Veuve Clicquot introdujo Veuve Clicquot Rich, que también está diseñado para diluirse con hielo, pero va un paso más allá y puede utilizarse en cócteles o adornarse con frutas.
Para no ser superados por sus homólogos franceses, los creadores de Cava también han elaborado ediciones con hielo, pensando en los mismos resultados. Uno de los más populares es el Freixenet Ice. Este cava en particular ha sido creado no sólo para ser disfrutado con hielo en una copa de balón, sino que también puede mezclarse con otros sabores como frambuesa, kiwi, lima o limón. Este cava está elaborado a través de una mezcla de vinos Macabeo, Xarel.lo y Parellada, con un toque de Chardonnay, y tiene una burbuja fina y elegante además de un aroma afrutado.
Otra marca de cava que se ha sumado a la moda del cava con hielo es Codorníu.

En cuanto a mí, bueno, para ser totalmente honesto, me costó acostumbrarme a la idea de poner hielo en mi copa, sobre todo porque prefiero que mi cava y mi champán sean muy secos y las ediciones con hielo son más dulces por diseño. Sin embargo, el concepto tiene cierto encanto y en un día caluroso de verano, es una bebida perfectamente recomendable. Mi única observación sobre el hielo en el cava y el champán es que es mejor que el hielo esté hecho de agua filtrada o embotellada porque, cuando el hielo se derrita, transmitirá los sabores al vino. n

There is something undeniably magical about dining on the beaches of Southern Spain. The scent of the sea mingling with smoky wood, the rhythmic crashing of waves, and the golden light of the late afternoon sun create a setting that is both timeless and unforgettable. But perhaps nothing captures this sensory symphony more perfectly than the sight and taste of fresh fish and seafood grilled on skewers by open olive wood fires. This age-old tradition, particularly common along the Costa del Sol and Costa de la Luz, is more than just a method of cooking — it is a celebration of Andalusian culture and culinary artistry. Known locally as espeto, this style of grilling involves threading sardines, prawns, squid, or even whole seabass onto long metal skewers and cooking them over glowing olive wood embers, often in boats repurposed as rustic beach barbecues.
Visually, the experience is a feast in itself. The skewers are arranged like miniature sculptures, the silver of the fish glistening as the heat begins to curl the skin to a perfect crisp. Flames flicker against the backdrop of blue skies and shimmering
water, while the smoke from the olive wood drifts slowly into the air, carrying with it a warm, earthy aroma. But it’s the taste that leaves a lasting impression. The fish is always fresh, usually caught that very morning, and the simplicity of the preparation allows its natural flavour to shine. A light sprinkling of sea salt, maybe a squeeze of lemon, is all that’s needed. The olive wood imparts a subtle sweetness and depth to the flesh, enhancing rather than overpowering. Each bite is juicy, tender, and deeply satisfying — a perfect balance between land, sea, and fire.

Esta tradición milenaria, especialmente común en la Costa del Sol y la Costa de la Luz, es algo más que un método de cocinar:
