elcome to the July 2020 edition of OCIO magazine. With a degree of normality now returning to our lives we enter the traditional summer season. Our beaches will once again be filled with tourists, albeit of a more domestic nature than international this year, but none the less we will welcome the many visitors who come to enjoy the friendly hospitality that our part of Spain is famous for. At the time of writing, the usual summer programme of events was very much in doubt but, with or without these special events, we will continue to enjoy each others company. So dust off the barbecue, pop a few beers, open the cava, invite your family and friends to join you and let’s get the summer party started!

Nuestras playas volverán a llenarse de turistas, aunque este año de carácter más nacional que internacional; no obstante recibiremos a los numerosos visitantes que vienen a disfrutar, de la cálida hospitalidad por la que es famosa esta parte de España. En el momento de escribir este artículo, el acostumbrado programa de eventos de verano estaba muy en duda pero, con o sin estos eventos especiales, seguiremos disfrutando de la compañía de los demás. ummer is the perfect time of year to plan and enjoy your outdoor activities and your outdoor space and, if you have a swimming pool, then you should be making the most of it this season. For many, the pool is the centre of attention of the garden space, and therefore needs seating, lighting, and amenities around it. Most swimming pools, I find, are multi purpose areas. They need to be fun playgrounds for the kids with beach balls, flotation devices and fun games to do around and inside the pool, plus, they need to be sophisticated areas for 06 OCIO magazine

Use lanterns and tabletop lighting for dining areas, and overhead lighting hung from trees and garden furniture umbrellas to provide ambient lighting. Ensure your pool has adequate lighting inside and outside of the pool to ensure safe footing, as well as gorgeous views and ambience. If your budget will carry it, consider lighting the landscaping and surrounding architectural elements of your garden to bring the total pool experience to life! In terms of planning an event, party or gathering, Ask any event planner the secret to entertaining without stress, and they will say, ‘plan out your activities in advance’. have to have a strict itinerary of the day or night, it does mean that an idea of what your guests will eat, where they will dine, lounge, play and interact will help you and your guests enjoy themselves around the pool. For example, if you’re planning on barbecuing, have your dishware, cooking utensils and ample room for dining and mingling adjacent to the pool area. Remember, in order to make your guests feel comfortable, you need to ensure they have enough space to move around and interact without feeling crowded. Give them, and you, plenty of space to enjoy the setting you have created and your event will be a big success. Entertaining around the pool is one of life’s great treasures to spend with friends
and family. Regardless of your budget or the size of your pool area, entertaining is about the people you share it with and the great time that will be had by all. n

COVID-19 and the Spanish property market Covid-19 y el mercado inmobiliario español Words: albert cross
H
ow do you value a property in a market without transactions? Potential buyers and sellers would like to know, but this is also a problem for appraisal companies in Spain now that the Coronavirus has paralysed the Spanish housing market, forcing the Bank of Spain to issue guidance on property valuations in a diseased environment. The Spanish property market is opaque at the best of times, because it is always difficult to get reliable market price information based on actual sales. At a time like this, when sales have all but dried up due to the Covid-19 pandemic, sales price comparables have disappeared altogether, leaving the market even less transparent than before. When it comes to the value of property, everybody is now flying blind. According to a spokesperson for the network of chartered surveyors in Spain, “the outbreak of Coronavirus (COVID-19) has required that chartered surveyors declare all valuations, until further notice, as subject to ‘material u

ómo se valora una propiedad en un mercado sin transacciones? A los potenciales compradores y vendedores les encantaría saberlo, si bien esto es un problema para las empresas de tasación españolas también; con el mercado inmobiliario español paralizado por el Coronavirus, el Banco de España se ha visto obligado a emitir una guía, sobre valoración de propiedades en un entorno de crisis. El mercado inmobiliario español es poco transparente -esto en el mejor de los casos-, porque siempre es difícil obtener información fiable sobre los precios de mercado, basada en las ventas reales. En un momento como éste, cuando las ventas se han reducido casi a cero, debido a la pandemia de Covid-19, los precios de venta comparativos han desaparecido por completo, dejando el mercado aún menos transparente que antes. Cuando se trata del valor de una propiedad, todo el mundo está dando palos de ciego. Según un portavoz de la red de tasadores colegiados de España, “el brote de Coronavirus u OCIO magazine

valuation uncertainty’. Note that the uncertainty is in the market and not the valuation.” There are other ways to value a property, for example using a discounted cash flow based on an actual or assumed rental income stream and in line with guidance from the Bank of Spain, chartered surveyors are required to use these alternative valuation methods where appropriate in the current market. Whichever method is used, the Bank of Spain recommends that valuers include a “specific warning pointing out the extraordinary current situation,” and warns that, until the market gets going again, “valuations will be plagued by a high level of uncertainty.” Mortgage valuations are also affected, though the long-term lifespan of mortgages means that mortgage valuations can take a longer-term view. That said, the Bank warns that “at this moment it is difficult to make a reliable estimation of the timespan and way in which prices will evolve.” The Spanish property market will start to come back to life at some point this year, probably driven by pent-up domestic demand, and bargain hunters in the holidayhome market. It will be interesting to see at what price level the market starts to come back to life. n 16 OCIO magazine

situación actual”, y advierte que, hasta que el mercado vuelva a funcionar, “las valoraciones estarán plagadas de un alto nivel de incertidumbre”. Las valoraciones de las hipotecas también se ven afectadas, aunque al tener una vida útil a largo plazo, las valoraciones de las hipotecas pueden tener una perspectiva más amplia. Dicho esto, el Banco advierte que “en este momento es difícil hacer una estimación fiable del tiempo y la forma en que los precios evolucionarán”. El mercado inmobiliario español comenzará a volver a la vida en algún momento de este año, probablemente impulsado por la demanda interna reprimida, y los cazadores de gangas en el mercado de casas de vacaciones. Será interesante ver a qué nivel de precios el mercado empieza a volver a la vida. n

Villa Padierna Golf Club Flamingos Course
T
his 18-hole, par 71 course measuring 5,714 metres was designed by the prestigious architect Antonio García Garrido, known for his meticulous landscaping which is highlighted with fabulous views of the Mediterranean. The fairways, which are sown with Bermuda grass, except for certain holes that use Ray grass, are slender on the front nine holes but become a little more generous on the back nine holes. The bunkers, of which there are plenty, contain fine white marble chips. The greens are some of the best we have played. They are large in size and sown with Penncross grass and enjoy the benefit of expert maintenance to keep them in top condition. In fact the same can be said for the whole course which is meticulously maintained. It is not surprising that Flamingos Golf has hosted numerous prestigious golf tournaments. In terms of playing the course we found it had plenty of holes where the driver can 22 OCIO magazine

ste campo de 18 hoyos, par 71, de 5.714 metros, fue diseñado por el prestigioso arquitecto Antonio García Garrido, conocido por su meticuloso diseño paisajístico, y en el destacan las fabulosas vistas al Mediterráneo. Las calles, sembradas con césped Bermuda excepto en algunos hoyos que utilizan césped Ray, son estrechas en los nueve primeros hoyos, pero un poco más amplias en los nueve últimos. Los ‘bunkers’, de los que hay muchos, contienen finas astillas de mármol blanco. Los ‘greens’ son unos de los mejores que
hemos probado. Son grandes y están sembrados con hierba Penncross y se benefician de un experto mantenimiento, para mantenerlos en óptimas condiciones. De hecho, lo mismo puede decirse de todo el campo, que es mantenido meticulosamente. No sorprende a nadie, que Flamingos Golf haya sido anfitrión de numerosos y prestigiosos torneos de golf. En lo que respecta al juego del campo, encontramos que tiene un montón de hoyos en los que el ‘driver’ puede ventilar la bolsa sin demasiado riesgo, pero, también hay bastantes diseñados para atraparte, si no le tienes al campo el respeto que se merece. A visit to... Golf Torrequebrada O
ur group of four, mid handicap golfers recently visited the long established Golf Torrequebrada, which is located in the municipality of Benalmรกdena, just 20 minutes from Mรกlaga Airport. Upon arrival, the multilingual team were friendly, welcoming, knowledgeable and very keen to ensure that we enjoyed our visit. They even delivered our two buggies right to us, each one cleaned and sanitised after every use. After a visit to the large and well stocked 24 OCIO magazine
pro shop, we headed to the practice area and driving range to loosen up the back and shoulders before the round of golf ahead of us. We found the superb design of Golf Torrequebrada made the course very enjoyable indeed. No matter what your handicap is, there is an enjoyable round to be had here. The large undulating greens make putting an absolute pleasure, albeit care and attention was required to avoid three putting. The strategically placed sandy bunkers and large lakes also kept
us on our guard as we navigated our way around the course. The wide fairways are beautifully lined with palm trees, pines and olive trees which created a picturesque setting from the high levelled tees. This together with the views overlooking the Mediterranean Sea and the mountains, made Golf Torrequebrada a unique and immensely enjoyable course to play. After our round of golf, we headed straight to the magnificent clubhouse to enjoy a cold beer or two on the large terrace. As we sipped our beer, enjoyed the

uestro grupo de cuatro golfistas con handicap medio, visitó recientemente el ya consagrado campo de Golf Torrequebrada, que se encuentra en el municipio de Benalmádena, a sólo 20 minutos del
aeropuerto de Málaga. A su llegada, el equipo multilingüe fue amigable, acogedor, entendido y muy dispuesto a garantizar que disfrutáramos de nuestra visita. Incluso nos entregaron dos ‘buggies’, cada uno de ellos limpio y desinfectado después de su uso. Después de una visita a la enorme y bien surtida tienda de golf, nos dirigimos a la zona de prácticas y al campo de prácticas para aflojar la espalda y los hombros antes de la ronda de golf. Encontramos que, el magnífico diseño del
Golf Torrequebrada, hizo que el campo fuera muy agradable. No importa cuál sea su handicap, hay una vuelta agradable que se puede hacer aquí. Los grandes ‘greens’ ondulados hacen que el ‘putting’ sea un placer absoluto, aunque se requirió cuidado y atención, para evitar el triple putt. Los ‘bunkers’ de arena, estratégicamente situados y los grandes lagos, también nos mantuvieron en guardia mientras navegábamos por el campo. Las amplias calles están hermosamente alineadas con palmeras, pinos y olivos, que crean un pintoresco escenario desde los altos tees de salida. O
n the whole, your immune system does a remarkable job of defending you against disease, infection and illness but, sometimes it fails, a germ invades successfully and makes you sick. Illness is a fact of life but it is not all up to chance. With a bit of effort, thought and care it is possible to intervene in this process and boost your immune system to help it fight the ongoing battle to keep you healthy. It must be said that whilst the idea of boosting your immunity is enticing, the ability to do so successfully has proved elusive from medical science. The main problem is that the immune system is precisely that — a system, not a single entity. To function well, it requires balance and harmony. There is still much that researchers don’t know about the intricacies and interconnectedness of the immune response. Researchers are continually exploring the effects of diet, exercise, age, psychological stress, and other factors on the immune response, both in animals and in humans. Science and medicine struggle to provide proof of a direct link between lifestyle and enhanced immune function but, that doesn’t mean the effects of lifestyle on the immune system aren’t intriguing at the very least. Even in the world of science and without proof, it is still considered that general healthy living strategies are a good way to start giving your immune system the upper hand in the war against illness. So, where to start? Well, your first line of defense is to choose a healthy lifestyle. It is the single best step you can take toward naturally keeping your immune system strong and healthy. Every part of your body, including your immune system, functions better when protected from 28 OCIO magazine
environmental assaults and bolstered by healthy-living strategies such as not smoking and if you drink alcohol, make sure it is in moderation only. Your diet is of course very important and as we all know, should be high in fruits and vegetables. The right diet with some excercise should see you maintain a healthy weight which is very important if you are going to strengthen your immune system. Sleep is another aspect that must not be ignored. Make sure you get enough sleep and make sure it is good quality sleep. Stress is one of the biggest attacks on our immune system and indeed our general wellbeing. Stress affects the way we eat, sleep and think. I know all too well that it is easier said than done but you simply must avoid stress in your life at all costs. And finally, as we have
all become aware recently with the Covid 19 virus, hygiene is incredibly important to help your immune system, so wash your hands frequently and thoroughly, especially immediately after being in public places. As I said at the beginning of this article, your immune system does a remarkable job of defending you against disease-causing microorganisms, so the least you can do is help it to do its job by taking care of yourself. BMW M8

W
hen the original BMW 8 Series was released back in 1990, engineers gave serious thought to a hot M Sport version. A prototype was built – complete with a 550bhp 5.5-litre V12 – but it never made production. The same goes for an 8 Series Convertible; it was trialled, but it never reached showrooms. Thirty years later, BMW hasn’t so much dipped its toe in the water of the luxury convertible class with a drop-top 8 Series, but dived right in with a hot M8, too. But what makes BMW so sure it’s the right product to be selling now? 42 OCIO magazine
Well for one thing, there’s more of a business case. While the old 8 Series was developed as a unique project from the ground up, the latest version uses BMW’s CLAR platform – which is found under models as widespread as the X7 4x4 to the 3 Series saloon. The new 8 Series was always intended to be offered as a convertible, too, as well as a coupé and four-door Gran Coupé. Then the performance boffins at BMW’s M Division turned their attention to it. The standard 8 Series Convertible’s design is beefed up with enlarged front intakes, side
gills, quad tailpipes at the back and a set of 20-inch forged alloy wheels. It certainly has the aggressive looks for a buyer who wants to get noticed. The standard convertible roof remains, and it takes just 15 seconds to open (at speeds of up to 31mph) to reveal a cabin which features carbon-fibre trim, a sportier gear selector than other 8 Series variants, and some great multi-adjustable seats with M8 logos in the head restraints. Treinta años después, BMW no solo se ha metido hasta la médula en la clase de los descapotables de lujo, con un Serie 8 descapotable, sino que también se ha metido de lleno con un M8. ¿Pero qué
ha hecho que BMW esté tan seguro de que es el producto indicado para vender ahora? Bueno, para empezar, hay más de un argumento comercial. Mientras que la antigua Serie 8 fue desarrollada como un proyecto único desde cero, la última versión utiliza la plataforma CLAR de BMW, que se encuentra en modelos tan extendidos como el SUV X7 o la berlina Serie 3. La nueva Serie 8 siempre fue pensada para ser ofrecida también como un cabriolet, así como un coupé y un Gran Coupé de cuatro puertas.

Sending 616bhp and 750Nm of torque to all four wheels, this four-seat, open-top cruiser will smash its way from 0-60mph in just 3.3 seconds which is enough to keep pace with all but the most serious supercars. Should you have the space, the relentless shove barely eases all the way up to the electronically limited top speed of 155mph – or 189mph if you spec the optional M Driver Package. The M8 isn’t without criticism, though. For such a bold car, the exhaust tone doesn’t quite live up to expectations and when pottering around at low speeds, it can feel a little jerky. Very cleverly though, the exhaust, gearbox steering, throttle, brakes and suspension settings can be changed via the iDrive menu on the car’s touchscreen. Grip and turn-in are remarkable for a car that weighs 2,085kg (125kg more than the M8 Coupé) and the steering is precise and quick, which does a great job of hiding that mass, even at low speeds. Whilst this car would be fun on a track, pushing it to its limits, it is also a great car just for cruising. In comfort mode, the M8 is relaxing, and on the motorway its stability is exceptional. 44 OCIO magazine
A car in this catagory is up against some very stiff competition with Bentley, Ferrari, Aston Martin and Mercedes to name but a few but, BMW has a dedicated band of followers and will easily hold its own in terms of world sales. n revelar un habitáculo que presenta adornos de fibra de carbono, un selector de marchas más deportivo que otras variantes de la Serie 8, y unos estupendos asientos multiregulables con logotipos de M8 en los reposacabezas. Si tienes espacio, el incesante empuje te hará llegar hasta la velocidad máxima limitada electrónicamente de 250 km/h o 305 km/h si especificas el Paquete de Conductor M opcional.
El M8 no está exento de críticas, sin embargo. Para ser un coche tan atrevido, el ruido del escape no está a la altura de las expectativas y cuando va a baja velocidad, puede sentirse un poco brusco. Muy inteligentemente, sin embargo, el escape, la dirección de la caja de cambios, el acelerador, los frenos y la suspensión se pueden cambiar a través del menú de iDrive en la pantalla táctil del coche. El agarre y el viraje son notables para un coche que pesa 2.085 kg (125 kg más que el M8 Coupé) y la dirección es precisa y rápida, lo que hace un gran trabajo para no apreciar ese peso, incluso a bajas velocidades. arbecue grilling is a favourite summer pastime enjoyed all over the world on barbecues of various shapes, sizes and energy sources. One favourite variation is the smoker which, if you are not familiar with, will open up a whole new world of outdoor cooking for you. But first thing first, what is the difference between grills and smokers? Barbecue grills are still the most popular way to cook meat outdoors, even though times have changed. The grill used to be a solely outdoor cooking tool – you’d fill it with charcoal, light it up, and then snap on the lid if you want a smokier flavour. Having a barbecue party is a typical summer activity, filling the garden with friends and family and sharing some truly fabulous food from the barbecue grill. Over time the 50 OCIO magazine

Just like the grill, smokers started with charcoal and graduated to wood chips, and today there are a lot of different kinds and types of smokers. Sometimes. It depends on the shape and the size of the smoker. Smokers are designed to get no warmer than about 110 degrees, and unlike a grill, they have to have the smoke to do their job, even if your meat cooks all day. Electric smokers typically still require wood (a few models have charcoal) to generate the smoke they need. High temperatures are not needed in an authentic smoker, but some models have hybrid options that get to higher temperatures. The benefits of smokers are plenty when it comes to cooking barbecue as well as smoking whole birds like turkey or chicken. So, bearing in mind that some grills can smoke and some smokers can grill, the 52 OCIO magazine
main difference between the two is the cooking time. A grill as we know is more or less instant but a smoker requires time and planning. The results of course are also very different. An important question for you is what food do you want to cook? If the answer is a few hot dogs, burgers and the such like then a grill is perfect for your needs. However, if your answer is pulled pork, spare ribs, a whole pig, and other barbecued masterpieces, you need a good smoker. The point is, smokers are not the same as grills. A smoker is really most appropriate for meat and nothing else, whereas you can grill almost anything including plant foods such as corn or even tofu on a grill, but they won’t survive the slow-cook of a smoker. If
you’re wondering what food to smoke in a smoker, the answer will always be meat and poultry...and it does it quite spectacularly. If you are good at barbecue grilling and have managed to get well cooked tasty meat from a barbecue grill, just imagine what you could do with a smoker and a little bit of experience. n

estaurante Cortijo Veleta is the newly opened restaurant in Riogordo. Owned and operated by Chef Ryan Murphy and his wife Helen, along with assistance from their family. This really is a family affair and because of it, the hospitality is second to none. Ryan is a very accomplished chef with experience in Michelin starred restaurants working alongside chefs that are internationally acclaimed. But do not let Ryans qualifications mislead you, he has no intentions of presenting a Michelin starred restaurant to Riogordo. What Ryan and his family are offering instead is good quality home produced food, sourced locally, in a friendly and welcoming atmosphere where the whole family can enjoy food as it should be. know you are going to enjoy a meal that cannot help be a little bit special...even when it appears to be simple cuisine. On our visit we enjoyed a selection of starters that included Croquetas, a Chicken Terrine and a Seafood Platter. On paper nothing unusual but on the plate, something quite different. For main courses we chose the oak aged beef and the Smoked Salmon. Both dishes were prepared with style and expertise and the flavours, well, spectacular. We did our best to make a dent in the Chocolate Fondant dessert, but to be honest, there was really very little room left...even for dessert. Our meal was accompanied with a delightful bottle local red wine. Now I know what you are thinking. Great food that is all home cooked, a top quality chef, Michelin stars, it all adds up to an
expensive bill at the end of the meal...well actually, no. The menu is very fairly priced allowing for couples, families or groups of friends to enjoy a fantastic meal without breaking the bank. Will we be coming back? ...Yes, absolutely! n

l restaurante Cortijo Veleta ha sido recientemente inaugurado en Riogordo. Dirigido y manejado por el Chef Ryan Murphy y su esposa Helen junto con la ayuda de su familia, este es un negocio verdaderamente familiar y por ello su hospitalidad es insuperable. Ryan es un chef muy reconocido, con experiencia en restaurantes galardonados con estrellas Michelin trabajando junto a chefs internacionalmente aclamados.
Pero no dejes que las credenciales de Ryan te confundan, ya que no es su intención traer un restaurante Michelin a Riogordo. En vez de eso, lo que Ryan y su familia nos ofrecen es comida casera de gran calidad, de origen local, en una atmósfera amigable y acogedora donde toda la familia podrá disfrutar
de la comida en todo su esplendor. Por supuesto que con las habilidades de Ryan en la cocina no hay duda de que la comida que disfrutéis será algo especial… incluso cuando parezca tratarse de cocina sencilla. En nuestra visita disfrutamos de una selección de entrantes que incluyeron
las Croquettas, una Tarrina de Pollo y una Fuente de Marisco. Sobre el papel puede parecer algo normalito, pero en el plato es algo único. Para los platos principales elegimos ternera envejecida al roble y salmón ahumado. Ambos platos preparados con estilo y experiencia, y los sabores, bueno, espectaculares. Lo dimos todo para acabar con el postre de Chocolate Fondant, pero para ser sinceros, ya no teníamos hueco… ni siquiera para tan delicioso postre. Nuestro almuerzo se acompañó de una deliciosa botella de vino tinto local. Ya sé lo que estáis pensando. Excelente comida que es toda casera, un chef de prestigio, estrellas Michelin, todo nos lleva hasta una cara cuenta al final del almuerzo… pues en realidad, no. Su menú tiene unos precios muy apropiados que permiten que parejas, familias y grupos de amigos puedan disfrutar de una comida fantástica sin arruinarse. ¿Volveremos a ir? ¡Sin ninguna duda! n

ertain drinks are irrevocably associated with certain cities or countries. The Singapore Sling and Manhattan are obvious. Cuba has its Daiquiri, Puerto Rico the Piña Colada. Dublin’s drink is Guinness, Rio has the caipirinha, and for the best Gin and Tonic, you would naturally look towards... Spain! Spain makes the best G&T, served in the perfect glass and garnished with citrus peel and fresh spices like star anise or grated nutmeg. Many bars and restaurants now offer an entire menu dedicated to the “Gintonic” as it is known. It is not unusual for these establishments to have up to 80 different gins on the shelves, sourced from all around the world. The British may have invented the drink, but the Spanish have elevated it to an art form. In the beginning, it was all just medicine. Hoping to ward off malaria, British troops in India in the early 1800s took to drinking water mixed with the ground-up, quinineladen bark of the cinchona tree. To make this intensely bitter concoction more palatable, the men added sugar, then fancied things up with soda water. Before long, they were adding gin. The troops brought their delicious new cocktail-hour discovery back home to England with them, but the Gin and Tonic didn’t really take off until the 1930s when commercially bottled tonic waters first hit the shelves. remains a London dry-style gin. This crisp, bold, junipery category includes the brands Tanqueray, Beefeater, Seagram’s, and Gordon’s, to name a famous few but with so many varieties on offer, it would be churlish not to try a few of the lesser known but more exotic brands as well. La bebida de Dublín es la Guinness. Río tiene la caipirinha, ¿y para el mejor Gin tonic, deberíamos pensar en... España! España se prepara el mejor Gin tonic. Se sirve en copa de balón y se acompañan con piel de limón o lima y con diferentes especias como anís o nuez moscada, entre otros. Muchos bares y restaurantes dedican cartas enteras a esta bebida y
estos establecimientos cuenten con una variedad de hasta 80 tipos de ginebra procedentes de todo el mundo. Quizá hayan sido los británicos los que inventaran esta bebida, pero sin duda, han sido los españoles los que la han elevado a la categoría de una obra de arte. En un principio, la tónica era sólo un medicamento, elaborado con la esperanza de prevenir la malaria. A principios de 1800, las tropas británicas en la India llevaron agua potable mezclada con quinina. Para hacer de esta bebida tan amarga un brebaje un poco más agradable, los soldados le añadían azúcar y un poco de soda. Al poco tiempo, ya le estaban añadiendo ginebra a la tónica. A su regreso, las tropas llevaron su nuevo descubrimiento a Inglaterra, donde no se popularizó hasta 1930, cuando comenzó la venta de tónica embotellada. La opción clásica para un Gintonic es la tradicional ginebra London dry. Esta refrescante categoría de ginebras aderezadas con enebro, incluye algunas marcas como Tanqueray, Beefeater, Seagram’s y Gordon’s, sólo por nombrar algunas. Desde luego, sería una grosería no probar alguna de las marcas menos conocidas pero mucho más exóticas. así que..... ¿hielo, una rodajita de limón y un par de moras para ti? ¡Salud! n OCIO magazine
