on estas fantásticas temperaturas, la oferta de actividades en la costa es interminable. En los próximos meses le enviaremos información e ideas sobre qué hacer, cómo, cuándo y dónde. Algunas actividades deportivas le transportarán al mar y otras tierra adentro ya sea sobre máquinas o sobre animales y todos ellos llenaran su vida de la satisfacción que usted merece. El mes anterior exploramos algunas actividades efectuadas en el interior, de modo que este mes vamos a la costa a ver con que nos encontramos. La playa ofrece mucha más diversión para toda la familia tanto para relajarse como para ejercer actividades relacionadas con el deporte y la aventura. Over the next few months we will bring you some ideas and information on what to do, how to do it, where to do it and when. Last month we explored some inland activities so this month we go down to the beach and see what is on offer. El club de vela de La Caleta de Vélez es un buen lugar para aprender a navegar. Mientras tanto, Sail & Stay en la Herradura ofrece viajes diarios, viajes al atardecer e incluso viajes de fin de semana a bordo del estupendo yate amarrado Optimist en el impresionante puerto de Marina del Este. El yate puede ser alquilado de forma privada o compartida con otras personas. Es ideal para hacer viajes románticos, familias con niños, negocios, despedidas de solteros, etc... Si usted prefiere un barco con motor, deberá dirigirse a una empresa de “Alquiler de Barcos” que podrá encontrar en Almayate, Almuñecar o Motril. Aquí podrá alquilar barcos por 30.00 euros la hora. Siguiendo con el tema de las actividades deportivas relacionadas con el mar, los centros de deporte náuticos de windsurfing más importantes se encuentran en la playa de Burriana en Nerja y en la playa de la Herradura donde se alquilan equipos y se dan lecciones de este deporte si lo desean. Si lo que desea es estar debajo del agua hay muchas escuelas de buceo en Torre del mar, Nerja y la Herradura. Existe otra alternativa si prefiere el agua dulce. El parque acuático Aquavelis es un lugar magnifico para gozar del frescor de sus aguas en compañía de su familia. Situado en Torre del mar frente al centro comercial El Ingenio, está abierto 7 días a la semana. nuestra revista consigo). Pero si estas actividades le agobian, llévese un buen libro, una toalla y bronceador. Beach volleyball is a great form of excercise and a lot of fun as well. If that’s a little too energetic, beach boules is a nice way to while away an hour or two in the sunshine. Leaving the sandy beach behind, perhaps you would like to go sailing? You can either learn to sail yourself or a yacht and captain can take you sailing. The sailing club at u

Caleta de Velez is a great place to start if you want to learn to sail. Meanwhile Sail & Stay in La Herradura offers day trips, sunset tours and even weekend trips aboard the beautiful yacht Optimist, moored at the impressive Marina del Este. The yacht is available for private hire or as a part of a larger group. It is suitable for romantic trips, families, business fun days, hen parties etc. If sailing is not your thing and you prefer to have an engine behind you then you will want to speak to ‘Alquiler de Barcos’ situated in Almayate, Almuñecar and Motril. They offer day boats from just 30.00 euros per hour. Again you can take control yourself or you can have a qualified captain take you out on the sea. They have many boats of different shapes and sizes, so give them a call and discuss the options that are available to you. Staying with the theme of being on the water, the main watersport centres for
windsurfing and the such like are on Burriana beach in Nerja and the beach at La Herradura, both offer equipment hire and lessons as required. If you would rather be in the sea than on it, there are plenty of diving schools around in Torre del Mar, Nerja and La Herradura. Swopping salt water for clear water, the Aquavelis water park is a great place to spend a few hours, with or without the children. Situated in Torre del Mar opposite the El Ingenio shopping centre, it is open 7 days a week. (OCIO readers are guaranteed a discount on the entrance fee if you bring the magazine advert with you). And if all this activity seems just a little too much then it’s back down to the beach with a book in one hand, towel and suncream in the other. Find yourself a spot and just lie back and relax. Buying surge in Spain Spanish property buying interest has surged after the UK elections and with the euro “bottomed” against the pound, prices are effectively the lowest for a decade – boosted by bank repossessions and uncertainties of the local economy. British, Scandinavian and Russian buyers are now snapping up bargains all over the coastal and inland regions of Spain, many with 90% and 100% mortgages due to the excellent loan to value opportunities, particularly with beachside and golf course properties. In some areas, banks are reporting sales of 10 repossessed properties a day, whilst leading estate agents throughout the country have seen enquiries rise close to the levels before the economic downturn took effect.
Global Real Estate Recovery Over half of global residential real estate markets have seen property prices rise in the first three months of 2010 with the Asia Pacific region leading the way, a new report shows. Prices increased in 53% of the locations monitored by the Knight Frank Global House Price Index in the year to the end of March 2010 with annual price inflation for all global property markets moving into positive territory for the first time since the end of 2008. The Asia Pacific region saw the strongest growth with average prices increasing by 17.8%. The top performers are China, Hong Kong and Singapore, all recording annual growth in excess of 24%. Ukraine and the three Baltic States continue to occupy the bottom rankings with annual price falls of more than 30%. ‘Arguably, the most noticeable trend in global house prices is the ease with which the performance of global housing markets can now be grouped by world region. The top four positions in our rankings are all occupied by Asia Pacific locations, whilst Europe sits comfortably in the middle of the rankings table,’ said a spokesman of the residential research team at Knight Frank.

odas las viviendas que puedan ser legalizadas serán legalizadas, previo pago de sus cargas correspondientes, al mismo tiempo que se tomarán fuertes medidas para prevenir que no se construya ni un inmueble más ilegalmente en el futuro. Esta es, básicamente, la nueva política andaluza dirigida a las viviendas construidas ilegalmente, según se dio a conocer recientemente en una conferencia sobre la Planificación Urbana en la provincia de Cádiz, a la que asistió la directora general de Inspección de Ordenación del Territorio. De acuerdo con las primeras líneas del nuevo Reglamento de Disciplina Urbanística, Andalucía tiene como objetivo “Proporcionar soluciones útiles en la práctica y afrontar la regulación de problemas con un tratamiento generoso” Eso podría significar no más demoliciones de viviendas construidas ilegalmente adquiridas de buena fe. That, in essence, is Andalucía’s new policy towards illegally built homes, unveiled recently at a town planning conference in the Cadiz Province, attended by the head of the town planning inspectorate in Andalucia. According to the first line of the new policy document, Andalucia now aims to “Provide useful solutions in practise and deal with (existing) problems in a generous manner.” That might mean no more demolitions of illegally built homes purchased in good faith. The policy of wiping the slate clean and ensuring it never happens again got unanimous backing from the mayors, town planners, architects, academics and other assorted experts attending the conference. Another question that came up during the conference was ‘who is to blame for this mess in which some 300,000 homes have been built illegally. Whilst the mayors blamed town planning authorities and town planners blamed mayors, it seems that everyone in the system had failed at some point, including the Andalucian society itself with it’s lack of culture towards town planning. A spokesman for the conference said that “the days of people doing what they want with their land is over. People must understand that you can’t build a house on land just because it is beside your grandparent’s house. The property rights of Roman law no longer exist.” It seems that the comments at the conference go to the heart of the problem. The spokesman continued to say that “for many generations, Andalucians have built what they wanted, where they wanted, but it’s a different world now. Everything has changed and local attitudes must do the same if we are to create a safe future for housing and property development”. n

few years ago there was a very successful advertising campaign with the watch manufacturer Longines, featuring the lovely Audrey Hepburn and the catchphrase for the whole campaign was ‘Elegance is an attitude’. This worked very well for the advertising campaign and at the same time created a catchphrase that has lasted for many years. As I look around in the national and worldwide glossy fashion magazines I notice that elegance is very much back in fashion, if indeed it was ever out of fashion. istóricamente, el exuberante y tropical valle de VélezMálaga, dónde se sitúa el Trapiche, ha sido famoso por propio micro-clima, permitiendo frutas tropicales como el aguacate, kiwi ,mango y cítricos crecer en abundancia. Pero estos días El Trapiche ha ganado popularidad por una razón muy diferente. Todos los martes por la mañana durante todo el año, el pueblo acoge un gran mercadillo dentro del recinto de Los Jardines del Trapiche. Productos locales y artesanía se venden junto los comerciantes que ofrecen sus servicios y productos a los muchos visitantes que vuelven semana tras semana. El Mercadillo de Trapiche cuenta con un amplio aparcamiento gratuito con espacio para multitud de vehículos y la entrada al mercadillo también es gratuita. Dentro hay un gran variedad de puestos que descubrir y cuándo caminar, charlar y comprar se hace un poco pesado, hay zonas de sombra dónde tomar un café, una cerveza y algo de comer del bar. El interior está equipado con aire acondicionado. Si aún no has visitado el mercadillo del Trapiche, te recomiendo que lo hagas, ya que realmente es una buena manera de pasar unas horas el martes por la mañana. Nos vemos allí Fácil de encontrar; En la carretera entre Vélez-Málaga y el pantano de La Viñuela, desviándose a la izquierda en el Restaurante El Cruce. istorically, the lush, tropical valley of Vélez-Málaga, where Trapiche is located, has been famous for it’s own micro climate, allowing tropical fruits such as avocado, kiwi, mango and citrus fruits to grow in abundance. But these days Trapiche has gained in popularity for a completely different reason. Every Tuesday morning throughout the year, the town hosts a large colourful Farmer’s Market inside the fabulous grounds of Jardines del Trapiche. Locally grown produce and handicrafts are on sale alongside local traders offering their services and products to the many visitors that return week after week. The Trapiche Market has a large free car park with room for hundreds of cars and entrance to the market is also free. Once inside there is a real variety of stalls to browse around and when the walking, talking and shopping gets too much, there are shaded areas with facilities for tea and coffee from the bar area along with wines, beers and hot food snacks. The interior section is fully air conditioned. If you have not yet visited the Trapiche Market, I would encourage you to do so, it really is a lovely way to spend a couple of hours on a Tuesday morning. See you there! Easy to find; From Velez Malaga head out towards Lake Vinuela. Turn left at the El Cruce Restaurant. The market is signposted from there.

La Feria de Málaga es sin lugar a dudas uno de los momentos estelares del calendario estival. Durante esos días, la ciudad abre sus puertas a todos los visitantes, así que sigue nuestros consejos y sugerencias, y disfruta de la fiesta como un malagueño más. The Málaga Feria is without doubt one of the highlights in the summer season calendar. The event is surprisingly user friendly for visitors, so follow our tips and advice and go party like a ‘malagueño’.

álaga pasa por ser una de las ciudades más subestimadas de España, aunque su festival anual sea uno de los más grandes del calendario nacional de fiestas. Sin embargo, atrae poca atención de los visitantes extranjeros. Los orígenes del festival se remontan hasta 1487, año en que Fernando e Isabel llegaron a la ciudad, cabalgando y triunfadores, para reclamarla a sus ocupantes moros, como parte de la España católica. Aunque menos conocida que la Feria de Abril de Sevilla, la de Málaga es similar en tamaño y la competencia entre ambas ciudades para superarse unos a otros con sus fiestas emblemáticas, aumenta cada año. La fiesta se inicia con el “Pregón de la Feria”, anuncio oficial u

ot only is Malaga one of the most underrated cities in Spain, its annual festival is one of the biggest on the national calendar of fiestas, yet it attracts little attention from overseas visitors. The origins of the festival can be traced back as far as 1487, the year when Fernando and Isabella rode triumphantly into the city to reclaim it as a part of Catholic Spain from its Moorish occupants. Lesser known than Seville’s Feria de Abril, the fiesta is similar in size and there is great competition between the two cities to outdo one another with their annual festivities. The Feria begins with the ‘Pregón de la Feria’ which is the official announcement of the opening of the festival which u OCIO magazine

Cuando anochece, alrededor de las 9, la fiesta se traslada al Real de la Feria, donde continúa hasta el amanecer. Cada año, en la primera noche de festejos, el alcalde de Málaga inaugura esta fiesta, encendiendo la iluminación de feria, en el Cortijo de Torres. Allí, unas 200 carpas o casetas se erigen en un área de más de 500.000 metros cuadrados, destinados para el evento. Cada “caseta”, conocidas como peñas, acoge diferentes grupos de malagueños, que se reúnen para festejar cada noche. En estas casetas, abiertas al público, se puede comprar comida y tapas mientras se disfruta de la fiesta. This is followed by an enormous firework display and several days of raucous partying Andaluz style with open air bars serving lirterally thousands of litres of sherry, spontaneous flamenco dancing in the street and the city’s main annual bullfighting festival at the city’s Plaza de Toros. By day activities are centred around Marques de Larios in the heart of the city centre just opposite the port. Throughout the city beautiful women with their daughters stroll around in flamenco dresses whilst the city’s horse and cart taxis are decorated with colourful ribbons and their drivers wear traditional costumes. Street music and sherry consumption are ever present whilst there’s plenty of entertainment to keep the children amused. The Feria de Día lasts from around noon until 7pm then there’s a lull before the storm as the evening session begins. When nightfall comes or around 9pm
generally, the party moves to the Real de Feria where it continues until dawn. The Mayor of Málaga has the job every year of turning on the fairground illuminations on the first night of festivities at the Cortijo de Torres. Here some 200 marquees, or casetas, have been erected in an area of more than 500,000 square metres specifically for the Feria. Each ‘Caseta’ houses different groups of Malagueños, known as peñas, who meet here to party every evening. These casetas are open to visitors and you can buy food and tapas there whilst enjoying the party. There are shuttle buses running back and forth from the city centre to the fairground throughout the night whilst the taxi business does a roaring trade. The celebrations continue until midnight on the last night in the Real de Feria, ending with a gala performance and another explosive display of fireworks, until the following summer and another Feria de Malaga. n

Homemade italian ice cream is the speciality of the house and it comes in so many different flavours it is almost impossible to choose. Aside from the ice creams, Dolce Vita is famouus for it’s delicious range of homemade German cakes and pastries. The large attractive terrace over looking the beach is the perfect location to sit, relax and watch the world go by. Dolce Vita is easy to find set in the heart of Algarrobo Costa at the Centro Internacional. Parking is easy and Dolce Vita is only a short stroll from the Centro Internacional parking area.

ith summer now well and truly under way we are all enjoying fantastic summer days by the pool, on the beach and in the sea and what great days these are, fun filled days spent with family and friends. However, as much as I enjoy lazy days spent in the sunshine and splashing in the waves, for me, the best of summertime comes once the sun goes down and the sunset experience begins. Warm balmy evenings are ideal to create the perfect chillout experience. Of course I am not just talking about a

on el verano ya verdaremente en marcha, todos disfrutamos de fantásticos días de verano junto a la piscina y la playa, y que grandiosos son estos días, llenos de diversión junto a la familia y amigos. Sin embargo, al igual que disfruto de días perezosos bajo el sol y chapoteando en las olas, para mí, lo mejor del verano llega una vez que se pone el sol y comienza el atardecer. Las calurosas y agradables noches son ideales para crear un perfecto ambiente chillout. Por supuesto, no estoy hablando solo del lugar, sino de la experiencia chillout en su conjunto. Comienza por ducharse y acicalarse para la noche, ponerse un vestido veraniego o en el caso los hombres, su camisa favorita y pantalones de OCIO magazine

lino. Una vez que ya están todos vestidos con sus mejores galas de verano, todo se centra en la ubicación. Si ésta es el chiringuito local en el que puedes escuchar las olas acariciando suavemente la orilla o un local de clase alta en el centro, o incluso, su propio patio junto a la piscina con la preparación adecuada. Su salón chillout puede estar en cualquier sitio que imagine, siempre que conste de asientos adecuados en forma de grandes sillones relajantes y sillas con suaves cojines para simplemente dejarse caer en ellos. El próximo ingrediente importante para crear la perfecta experiencia chillout es suave música relajante. Quizá Diana Krall cantando Quiet nights o Sergio Mendes con su popular Más que nada puede funcionar con usted, o Eliane Elías, cantando Call Me puede estar más de acorde con su gusto. Así que ahora que está vestido y acicalado, que ha encontrado un lugar con asientos confortables, buen ambiente, música relajante y tiene un cóctel en la mano, todo lo que necesita ahora es completar la experiencia con un grupo de amigos o
quizá un amante, nuevo o existente, y la experiencia chillout estará completa. Ah, y si está aquí de vacaciones o viviendo con su familia en otro país, acuérdese de traer una cámara y pedirle a una simpática camarera que tome una foto de usted disfrutando de su experiencia chillout en España. The next important ingredient to create the perfect chillout experince is gentle relaxing music. In fact whatever music helps you relax and unwind will work providing it is perfectly suited to your favourite cocktail, which of course is the next very important ingredient. If you don’t have a favourite one at the moment I suggest you try a few and see what tickles your fancy, but be careful, some of the mixtures sound great on the menu but if you are not used to them, can surprise you wth the effect they can have on you, and you don’t want your evening ruined with illness now do you. So now you are all dressed up, you have found a great location with comfortable seating, a nice ambience, relaxing music and you have a cocktail in hand, all you need now to complete the experience is a group of friends or perhaps a lover, new or existing and the chillout experience is complete. Oh, and if you are here on holiday or maybe living here with family in another country, do remember to bring a camera with you and ask a friendly waitress to take a photo of you enjoying your chillout experience in sunny

he popular resort of Algarrobo Costa lies between the larger towns of Torre del Mar and Torrox (closer to Torre del Mar) and is very easy to reach directly from the motorway or coastal road. It is a real favourite with national and international tourists with its wide beaches and long promenade which has an abundance of cafes, bars, restaurants, ice cream parlours and shops. Algarrobo Costa has become a popular tourist spot in it’s own right but has managed to retain an authentic Spanish atmosphere, due mostly to the fact that many Spanish nationals choose to holiday here. Accommodation for visitors is plentiful and is mainly provided by a few small hotels and an abundance of apartments which are mostly privately owned but of course are available for both holiday and long term rental. This relatively small resort offers peace and relaxation by day with a lovely sandy beach and plenty of cafe bars in which to escape the 62 OCIO magazine

heat if it gets too much for you but, as with many coastal towns and villages in the summer months, at night Algarrobo Costa comes alive. By night it is along the promenade that the action takes place with families, couples and friends mingling with the evening market trader stalls and enjoying a drink or a meal under the stars, overlooking the sea. For those that enjoy the late nightlife that comes with balmy evenings in sunshine resorts, there are a few bars along the Algarrobo coastline that open until the early hours of the morning or even until sunset if you can stand the pace and, a couple of cafe bars open early enough for you to just about move from mojito to coffee and croissant without any sleep...should you feel inclined to do so. Algarrobo Costa is friendly and fun and it is simply a great place to spend some time, whether for a day at the beach, a night out with friends or just somewhere to relax with a glass of wine. n

Professional football star turns restaurateur The athlete-turned-restaurateur is nothing new in the world of USA sports like baseball, American football or basketball, but now, with the recent World Cup fever, professional soccer players are jumping at the chance to enter into the restaurant business aswell. Cobi Jones, a retired star player for Los Angeles Galaxy, who played for the U.S. team in three World Cup tournaments, has joined with chef Scott Leibfried and restaurateur Jeremiah Higgins to launch the seafood concept Arch Rock Fish in Santa Barbara in California. Leibfried, is also known as the sous chef to Gordon Ramsay on the Fox Network television series Hell’s Kitchen as well as working on Kitchen Nightmares.
McDonald’s restaurants to open at the Louvre Lovers of France’s two great symbols of cultural exception – its haute cuisine and fine art – are aghast at plans to open a McDonald’s restaurant and McCafé in the Louvre museum next month. America’s fast food temple is celebrating its 30th anniversary in France with a coup, the opening of its 1,142nd Gallic outlet a few yards from the entrance to the country’s Mecca of high art and the world’s most visited museum. The chain faces a groundswell of discontent among museum staff, many already unhappy about the Louvre lending its name and works to a multimillion pound museum project in Abu Dhabi. “This is the last straw,” said one art historian working at the Louvre, who declined to be named. “This is the pinnacle of exhausting consumerism, deficient gastronomy and very unpleasant odours in the context of a museum”...but do McDonalds care, I think not?

Cocktail of the month: Margarita 2 oz silver tequila juice of half lime 1 oz orange curacao (or Cointreau) Garnish: lime wedge Rim: salt Mix all of the ingredients into a cocktail shaker and add some ice. Pour into your favourite margarita glass rimmed with salt and garnish with lime wedge.
