to the world of cooking for singles and couples. Whether you’re a single parent, a bachelor or bachelorette, a career professional or an empty nest couple, cooking for you in most cases is a little different than preparing regular meals on a regular basis.
MOVIN’ ON LOANS
Some of you are on your own for the first time. Everything doesn’t have to be microwaved or stirred in a pot filled with water and salt. But however you decide to cook, you’ll need a basic set of essential equipment. This equipment should be built around quality, not quantity. Even those who have cooked for years could find value in this “boot camp” list of the two levels of equipment to have in your kitchen. You’ll find no gimmicks on these lists. Cooking is just too important! Obviously you will need dishes, cups, saucers, glasses, silverware and napkins. The rest is on the list to the right. Relax! Even some established cooks don’t have it all.

The next chapter of the Kim Mulkey saga begain last week when the newly-crowned LSU Women’s Basketball National Championship Coach weighed in on the current status of the Pete Maravich Athletic Center.

Mulkey, never one to sugar coat issues, declared it was time for the old PMAC to get a major overhaul or be replaced with a new facility. Mulkey cited the half-century old facility’s myriad problems, including seating capacity, general appearance and natural, structural issues. It is not set up for efficient fan flow nor are there any modern facilities for the handicapped, such as escalators and elevators. There is a major choke point on the southern side where everyone has to go to the curved ramp to enter or exit the building. It’s exit point hinders traffic flow on the north side of Tiger Stadium.

My preference would be to see an entirely new facility further to the northwest side of the stadium, allowing easier flow of pedestrian traffic onto the west side of the stadium without blocking the street between the stadium and the PMAC. Any why not? Mulkey will retire at LSU once the school gives her the propers to express herself and back her play. Already the most successfull basketball coach at LSU in Year Two and with the best transfer portal and incoming high school basketball classes a fact, Mulkey is building a structure that will surpass Dawn Staley’s machine at South Carolina. Note that the Tigers are co-favorites with Connecticut to win the ladies title next year. Is Mulkey LSU’s next Nick Saban? But without the wanderlust to seek different pastures? I believe so. And for the next seven years or so, watch the women dominate the landscape as Mulkey picks up another three or four national crowns before riding off into the sunset.

Maybe it’s time for Brian Kelly to weigh in on the shell game LSU is playing with the modernization of Tiger Stadium. Already leading the nation in broken or badly altered programs involving food service, restrooms, fan participation and uncomfortable seating, the Tiger’s hocus-pokus schemes of fanciful stadium seating realignment remains in a cloud of cannabis. Say, those of you with disposible incomes of $200,000 or more, why don’t you weigh in your opinion on our latest hookah-inspired stadium seating layouts? Forget those usable interior dorm structures which remain ignored. Oh, you want escalators, elevators, cashless pay systems, modern restrooms, mainstream dining for all, not just for the five and six-figure income providers for the program? How quaint! How about concerns for the safety of departing fans as Baton Rouge becomes the mean streets along the Mississippi? How about better traffic control?

Maybe Tiger Stadium needs to be renamed TAF Stadium, in honor of the only meaningful organization that actually spends smart money to make the stadium shine. It may not be Kelly’s style to get into the politics of the school, but if he could survive the social, economic and political pressures of South Bend for a dozen years, he should be able to give LSU the first positive feedback on its football program and facilities status quo since Nick Saban. And that’s not a bad thing.

TUBER VERVAIN

Verbena rigida

Verbena is nothing new for seasoned home gardeners. The legendary V. canadensis ‘Homestead Purple’ has been used in gardens for years and it was awarded Louisiana Super Plant status back in the fall of 2015. Verbena plants are well-known for performing all summer long and producing an abundance of nectar which helps support local pollinators.

With the widespread use and popularity of this plant you’ll find all kinds of new introductions from the big plant breeders. While the new releases can be exciting, don’t sleep on the other species. One of these species that should be discussed is V. rigida, or tuber vervain.

Tuber vervain is a perennial plant with stems that lay on the ground with the tips curving upward towards the sky. It can reach heights up to 2ft tall. The leaves emerge opposite each node along the stem and display spear shaped leaves with coarsely toothed margin or edges. The flowers on this plant are a beautiful magenta/purple and occur in clusters at the ends of stems.

Most verbenas are native to the Americas and this particular species is native to South America, specifically the areas of Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, and Chile. At the current time it has now naturalized in the southwest portion of the United States where it grows up and down roadside throughout the deep south. Knowing a little bit about the native climate of where plants evolved is key to understanding their successful management. The climate is warm and dry in that area of South America, and this explains why you see it thriving alongside highways and byways throughout the region. Bright sunlight warms the pavement and keeps the surrounding soils slightly drier, mimicking the conditions within an arid climate.

Look for this plant at local plant nurseries that keep a variety of plants in their inventory. It’s not as common as some of the newer verbena species out there so keep an open mind while searching. Check online for companies that sell seeds. And, if you just can’t wait for a package to come in the mail it is possible to root out cuttings or collect seed from wild plants on the side of the road. Be careful and find an area where you can completely pull off the road. It would also be advisable to wear bright colored clothing so that oncoming vehicles can see you on the side of the road.

Well, for the first time in a long time the Saints stayed put and let the draft come to them. It wasn’t all on them as the teams ahead of them went berserk on quarterbacks that in my opinion were not Top 10 picks and then a heavy draft full of defensive linemen which was the team need slid right into New Orleans lap.

New Orleans Saints 2023 NFL Draft picks

1st Round, No. 29 overall (from from San Francisco through Miami and Denver)

Bryan Bresee, DT, Clemson

The Saints’ defensive line hemorrhaged in free agency, especially on the interior. Losing Shy Tuttle and David Onyemata hurt, and it forced New Orleans to target interior defensive line talent early in the 2023 NFL Draft. The defensive line is a unit you simply can’t neglect, and New Orleans made a quality investment with former five-star Bryan Bresee at 29th overall.

At 6’5 1/2” and almost 300 pounds, Bresee has impressive size and knockback power in his hands, but he also brings the athleticism you’d expect from a top recruit. Bresee’s incredibly explosive off the snap, and he has the ankle flexion to splice around blocks in close quarters while using violent hand swipes, clubs, and swims to break through anchors.

Instant grade: B+

2nd Round, No. 40 overall | Isaiah Foskey, EDGE, Notre Dame

All through the early 2023 months, defensive line was circled as a major need for the New Orleans Saints, especially after Dennis Allen’s squad lost several starters in free agency. They filled one void by adding Bresee in Round 1, and now they add a higher-rated player on my board in Isaiah Foskey, over 10 picks later.

Foskey is one of the most underrated EDGE prospects in the 2023 NFL Draft, for my money. He regressed a bit in 2022 but still managed to maintain elite production. He’s an incredibly explosive, twitched-up athlete at 6’5”, 264 pounds, with 34” arms. His combined size and explosiveness grants him elite power capacity, which he can use to barrel through tackles.

Instant grade: B+

3rd Round, No. 71 overall | Kendre Miller, RB, TCU

There’s been speculation that, despite having a contract that runs through 2025, Alvin Kamara is not long for the New Orleans Saints. He has a potential out in that contract in the 2024 offseason, and a suspension also creates friction for his standing. The Saints’ selection of Kendre Miller may be a reflection of that.

Miller was a busy man ahead of the NFL Draft, holding visits with dozens of teams, but the Saints are the ones who ultimately come away with him. Miller is one of the more complete RB prospects in the class.

Instant grade: B+

4th Round, No. 103 overall (from Chicago) | Nick Saldiveri, OL, Old Dominion

The Saints could have easily gone defense again here but with Andrus Peat being well Andrus Peat and not very dependable they went Offensive line. Nick Saldiveri is a very good player. He’s athletic, wellleveraged, composed with his footwork, and has tackle-guard versatility.

Instant grade: A-

4th Round, No. 127 overall (from Jacksonville) | Jake Haener, QB, Fresno State

By picking Jake Haener in Round 4, New Orleans locks down a quality backup on a cheap contract, who also has the competitive edge, field vision, layering ability, and pocket mobility to be a good spot-starter. He has a connection with the staff as they worked the Senior Bowl and he was named MVP. Also, an alum from the same school that Carr and his brother both went to. He might not have been the flashiest QB named in the draft but is an exceptional pick for the club.

Instant grade: A+

5th Round, No. 146 overall | Jordan Howden, DB, Minnesota

The Saints have an eye on the future, with Marcus Maye aging and entering a contract year. Jordan Howden provides depth early on, and he could end up playing meaningful snaps at strong safety down the line. He has a stocky frame at 6’0”, 203 pounds, to go along with 4.49 speed and good short-area agility, as evidenced by his 6.87 three-cone.

Instant grade: A+

6th Round, No. 195 overall (from Pittsburgh via Denver) | A.T. Perry, WR, Wake Forest

The Saints hadn’t drafted a WR until this point, and the WR they got toward the end of Round 6 was a top-100 talent on the PFN Consensus Board. At 6’3”, 200 pounds, A.T. Perry has a tantalizing blend of length, explosiveness, flexibility on his route cuts, and elite catching instincts. At his size, he’s one of the more refined route runners in the class, and he can produce in New Orleans’ rotation on Day 1.

Instant grade: A+

This staff did what it tends to do. They went with high quality, captain like, great teammate type of players. Guys who have a bit of work to do ability wise but can be coachable and will work hard in the weight room and on the field to get better. As usual, the Saints excelled in the later rounds as they grabbed guys who were ranked higher but to the deepness of their positions dropped in the draft. This year was a great draft for New Orleans and Dennis Allen as every one of these picks should ALL be starting at some point of their first couple years except for Haener who will likely wind up as the starter once Carr retires. Not to mention, we all know that New Orleans excels in the Un-Drafted Free Agency Market and a few of those guys will stick on the roster as well.

Mother’s Day is just 13 days away, so I thought I would share my Fairy Cottage with you. Wouldn’t this make a cute gift for Mom sitting inside a door wreath? I think the little flowers at the bottom are happy and cheerful. This would make such a nice keepsake for her. The colors can be changed to suit your likes as well as the words at the top. I am working on a beaded hanger for this in multi colors to match the piece. I am kinda thinking of actually adding a little fairy to this, whatcha think? I have been asked to paint a couple more of these with different wording and background colors. Those should be fun. So don’t forget, Mother’s Day is May 14th. If you are lucky enough to still have your Mom, do something special together, Make those memories that will last forever.

Well, that’s it for time. What will your next project be? Mine.......not really sure. But I know I will come up with something. Until next time.... Sincerely, Paula Johnson

We Are Now ALL Digital!!

Metro Plus has converted to a digital publication entirely. We’ve looked at doing this for some time. As things progress, so does the way of doing business.

You can visit our new website, www.printmediaplus.com, to view Metro Plus and our other media businesses, Mr. Map and MyEmail.

We don’t want to see physical print disappear but we can still get your favorite reading material to you. You can print the paper straight from our website, or your email. AND IT’S STILL FREE!

We send 60,000 emails to businesses and homes into the areas that we service each two week publication period......St. Tammany and much of the area around metro New Orleans and four counties in Mississippi (three along the coast and Stone County, just north). These emails will be in the form of Metro Plus’s latest issue, with information included about our new email company. We will continue to email to help reach a readership that should equal or exceed our print audience. It should be a win-win situation.

Whether or not you receive an emailed issue, simply paste our website (below) into your website browser. If you don’t have a computer or other electronic tools vitally necessary to function in today’s environment, you should consider getting one soon or risk losing other resources to modernization. Hundreds of papers like me have gone out of business over the past 10 to 15 years. We won’t..with your help and understanding.

Metro...Penny....Bargains.....Northshore.....Plaquemines & Westbank Plus! Whichever Plus! name you know us by, keep on reading and we’ll see you every two weeks....as usual.

LOOK FOR SIX COMMON CAUSES OF TOMATO WILT IN THE SOUTH

Tomatoes are in almost everyone’s garden and would easily be voted the number one vegetable. However, as much as we love to grow tomatoes, we must admit that it’s not always easy to do. In fact, sometimes it’s downright heartbreaking.

One of the heartbreaks of growing tomatoes occurs when our plants wilt. Wilt occurs suddenly or gradually when leaves, shoots or stems droop or collapse. In our part of the world there are six common causes of tomato wilt.

The first two causes of tomato wilt are the most obvious, yet they are very important to mention. They are the lack of or excess of water. We all understand why leaves droop or plants die from lack of water; however, tomato plants that stand in water for very long wilt too. If soils stay saturated plants will die. This is why we recommend planting in well-drained soil raised beds.

A third and cause is a disease known as Bacterial Wilt. Many gardeners describe plants with this disease as looking like they had hot water poured on them. They are fine one day and the next are permanently wilted. Bacteria actually clog the plumbing system of the plant resulting in a virtual drought.

Bacterial Wilt can be diagnosed with a simple test. First, remove the plant from the soil. Rinse the roots and lower stem. Once rinsed, cut a section from the lowest part of the stem, just above the roots, about four inches long. Have a jar of water ready so that the stem section can be suspended in the water, bottom end down. Then, watch the bottom end of the stem for a wispy, cloudy, milky ooze. This is bacterial streaming. The bacterial ooze is almost transparent, but can be seen releasing from the base of the stem. There isn’t much that can be done for bacterial wilt except to remove and destroy affected plants. Future plantings should be made in a different location. Tomatoes may be grown in containers, but if roots grow from the bottom of the container into infected soil they may contract the disease. Do not reuse stakes or ties.

Other common causes of tomato wilt include Southern Blight, Fusarium Wilt and Root Knot Nematodes. Nematodes and Fusarium may be avoided by planting tomato varieties that are resistant to both of these pests. Southern Blight, however, is another one of those“overnight” killers like Bacterial Wilt. It can be recognized by white fungal growth at the soil line or by beige “seed pearl” sized balls of white, beige or brown. If your plants wilted, try to determine the reason so that it can be avoided next time. There may yet be a simple solution to keep your love for tomatoes intact. Happy gardening!

HERBS & SPICES

There is a crispness in the air and also on the plate! Fall brings the return of crisp and peppery radishes. It’s the underrated, inexpensive ingredient for soups, sides and salads. Radishes burst from the ground or pot and into our kitchens in just three to six weeks after the seeds have been planted. Given their energetic growth spurt and their vibrant colors, in two weeks radish tops can be cut for vitamin packed microgreens. These roots come in round, oval or elongated shapes. They are sturdy, have a crunchy texture with assertive flavors ranging from sweet to spicy pungent or hot. This robust profile makes sense because they are a member of the Brassicaeae Family. Wow! Who knew they are cousins to broccoli and horseradish. The radish is high in vitamin C and low in calories. It’s mixes well with all herb combinations, taking on a new flavor profile with each different herb.

Radishes are trending as the best gluten-free alternative for chips. They are perfect scoopers for all your favorite dips. Look at it as the no-cal chip. Peppery raw radishes, sliced thin, are great on open-faced tea sandwiches, slathered with Boursin herb cream cheese. The whole radish is edible. Add the slightly bitter tops to mixed greens or saute’ with garlic and olive oil and the radish root for sweet or pepper crunch. When cooked, radishes mellow, becoming succulent and sweet. Try roasting them with leeks and tarragon or pureed with potato to make a creamy soup. I must confess. I am guilty of not really using radishes until I met my husband, Rick. He loved them . So I tried them . A match made in the produce aisle- my husband and I and the radish and salad bowl! Our favorite Greek restaurant serves radishes tossed in a little water with a pinch of honey served with hummus. The water extracts any bitterness and the pinch of honey sweetens the chips. The other favorite way I like to eat radishes is sliced thin, drizzled with a very flavorful extra virgin olive oil, sprinkled with a course salt and fresh chopped herbs from the garden. It’s great to put out for a dinner party because it doesn’t wilt and looks so uncomplicated, yet artsy pretty.

Look for different varieties of radishes to get a colorful presentation and to get a range of sweet to pungent flavors. The Watermelon Radish is spectacular sliced on the plate. It is larger than a golf ball, lime green on the outside and hot pink on the inside. Sliced thin and in half, it looks like a little watermelon slice.

I serve this with my two favorite dips, tatzaziki and lemon bean hummus, for guilt-free nibbling (see page 24 for these recipes). Radishes have a long storage life in the refrigerator. Keep a bunch on hand for your Fall entertaining. Get ravenous over radishes! Put Herbal Pizazz on your food & your gardens!

Bissel Pet Foundation Event

The goal for each homeless animal that walks through the doors at the Louisiana SPCA is to find a loving forever home. After successfully finding forever homes for over 18,000 pets in 2020 alone, BISSELL Pet Foundation is again aiming to Empty the Shelters again by sponsoring reduced adoption fees of $50 for cats and dogs, including kittens and puppies, during May 1-15. The Louisiana SPCA Plaquemines and New Orleans Campuses are both participating in this event, but adoption appointments are required.

BISSELL Pet Foundation’s mission to find every pet a loving home is the driving force behind Empty the Shelters. In 2016, BPF created this reduced-fee adoption event to make an immediate impact on the nation’s ongoing pet homelessness problem. Since then, this program has encouraged prospective pet owners to consider adoption as their first option when bringing a pet into their family, as there are so many deserving animals waiting to be loved. At the Louisiana SPCA we have various breeds at any given time and animals are constantly being adopted - so we have new animals making their adoption debut every day! With the variety and volume of animals available to adopt, potential adopters are bound to find a new family member to adopt.

Every animal is adopted from the Louisiana SPCA is spayed or neutered, fully vaccinated, microchipped and heartworm tested. Each adoption also includes a bag of Hill’s Science Diet food and dogs receive a discount on training classes.

If you are considering adding a pet to your family, please unleash your heart by adopting a rescue pet from the Louisiana SPCA during the Empty the Shelters event! You can check out an up-to-date list of our available animals online at www.louisianaspca.org/adopt.

Meet Blade! Blade is available for adoption! Come meet him today!

START is an all volunteer 501 C3 organization made up of members who rescue, foster and care for homeless cats and dogs. Our rescues are fostered in the homes of our volunteers until they are ready to be adopted. We are always in need of foster homes, especially for dogs. We greatly appreciate donations of dog and cat food, as well as funds to spay/neuter and provide veterinary care for the rescued pets. We can be contacted by email. Our address is startcares@hotmail.com. We are also on Facebook. Please contact us if you would like to make a donation to START, or to work together with us to help the abandoned pets in our community.

Kittens are here! If you want to attract attention, a litter of kittens is a great way to get a little crowd to gather around. People love to see them, pick them up, cuddle them and watch

them play. However, when you ask for help caring for them, there are few interested in doing that. Why do we have so many of these little animals with no one to provide them with food or shelter? It is sad to see so many homeless kittens. There are simply not enough homes for all of them. Many end up abandoned on the street, trying to survive. Contact your local animal shelter or rescue organization to find out how you can help.

At $125 for a 1/2 page or $250 for a full page, complete color ad message, the cost is less than two-tenths of a penny for the 1/2 page and less than four-tenths of a penny for the full page. You will reach 43 to 86 times as many households/businesses for your dollar than direct mail costs with a bigger, cleaner and easier to read message than on newsprint with no print production costs.

MY EMAIL clients also get the benefit of non-emailed Metro Plus readers, who can go directly to the Metro Plus website, printmediaplus.com which was promoted in the newsprint version of Metro Plus and on the rack signs at the physical locations where it was distributed prior to MY EMAIL.
