Tony’s Take ALL ROADS LEAD TO OMAHA IN JUNE, INCLUDING MINE

As the last vestiges of what has been the shortest spring in many a decade wither away, we say a heartfelt “Thanks for your service!” to our military personnel - family, friends, co-workers, neighbors, buyers and sellers of our goods and services. It might mean more this year as bloody conflicts in the Ukraine and in the Middle East and the Asian theatres of India and Pakistan join the ever-continuous Israeli vs their neighbors/vs a recent surge of anti-Semitism rage on. You think you’re tough? Go join the Massad and see how long you stick around. How does a hating leftist movement support such a thing as anti-Semitism when at least half of the funding sources for this bile come from companies and groups led by or funded by Jews. Really? Like Mad Magazine stated it so succinctly over a half-century ago in “Fiddler Made A Goof,” a typical Mad satire of a popular movie from the 1970’s. The point was that much of the fighting spirit that Jewish populations possess came after the Holocaust and obviously was concentrated in Israel. American Jews? Meh. Not so much.

Anyway….thank goodness America isn’t fighting anyone at this time as the reincarnation of Donald Trump and his Fox News cabinet continue to cause record sales of Pepto Bismol among entrenched District of Columbia citizens. It’s hard to fade a shady deal on any side of the aisle or geographical side of Washington these days and don’t forget…..Hitler was not your typical Ayrian with his Charlie Chaplin mustache and decidedly brunette and diminutive stature. But he was a hell of an orator. Donald Trump? Blonde hair, blue eyes but decidedly non-Aryian body style and more of a softer speaking, deal-making type of leader. Be stupid and continue to hate but what the hell do you have that even comes close? Whoopie Goldberg? A faded Black lady with a fart cushion surname and a Jewish last name? i’ve already written about Gavin Newsome and Kamala Harris and the rest are fringe players, footnotes in the theatrical performance program. AOC? Sounds like an organization but one that won’t even walk the halls of her so-called power base. Bernie? Best New England Democrat comedy accent since JFK but without the drive, the patriotism, the leadership, the vision, but, thankfully, without the baggage of a flawed or tragic family tree. The rest? You’ll find them at most local service club luncheons, trying so hard not to be their parents but only 99 yards away from scoring a political touchdown. Sad.

PRAYER TO THE HOLY SPIRIT

Holy Spirit, you who made me see everything and showed me the way to reach my ideal. You who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget the wrong as done to me. I, in this short dialogue, want to thank you for everything and confirm once more that I never want to be seperated from you, no matter how great the material desire may be. I want to be with you and my oved ones in your perpetual glory. AMEN. Thank you for your love towards me and my loved ones. Say this prayer for 3 consecutive days. After 3 days, the favor requested will be granted even if it may appear difficult.

PLACE A NOVENA AD BY CALLING 985-649-9515

June is when people get married (yes, they still do that, Virginia.) It’s a typical honeymoon month for LSU baseball, where Omaha becomes Geaux! maha in the last week of spring. The Tigers are still the best college baseball program around and don’t bet the farm that they won’t hoist their 8th National Championship trophy this year despite spotty hitting and relief pitching. They have the most passionate road fan base in the sport and have you ever seen anyone pass up an LSU tailgate for local or stadium fare? Me neither.

June is also a road trip for me, my wife and granddaughter. We are headed for the largest city in Kansas, Wichita, where my other granddaughter has set up shop to live and learn in a climate that fulfills her need for bone-chilling cold three months a year but also is pretty darn good the rest of the time. Tornados, yes. The Andover twisters were among the worst ever but you might have been around to see what those funnel clouds did to Slidell, New Orleans and many other places within a 125-mile radius of your home during the past five years. Frightening. And Wichita has never evacuated for a hurricane. Yes, I know Wichita isn’t Omaha but all roads that I take next month eventually lead to that Nebraska city through Wichita. So I’m technically correct.

My blind granddaughter is just one of many amazing people I know who handle their physical afflictions with courage and confidence. One of my most recent new clients, a couple, have five children while opening two local businesses in Belle Chasse. Their two youngest kids are adopted foreign children with physical challenges so severe that 95% of us would never survive a week of having to do what has to be done. But to do it with two new businesses and three other children in a new home far from their native environs….it’s a piece of humanity that sets a bar so high that I can’t even imagine it.

I hope you remember our defenders as you read this. Memorial Day was always on May 30th until it was turned into a three-day holiday, but anytime is a great time to shake these people’s hand. God Bless America!

SPOTTED CUCUMBER BEETLES IN THE HOME VEGETABLE GARDEN.

For those growing cucumbers, squash, honeydew melons, watermelons, mirlitons, and other related plants, spotted cucumber beetles are a tiny pest that can cause big problems. These common pests may look harmless, but they can wreak havoc in a vegetable garden by feeding on plant parts and causing a poor appearance, unmarketable fruit, and general stress. The immature stages can even feed on plant roots in the ground!

Spotted cucumber beetles, Diabrotica undecimpunctata, are a common pest of warm-season vegetable gardens. Adult beetles can get up to ¼ inch long with a black head, green thorax, and an easily recognized pair of elytra or wing coverings. Overall, they have a light green, more yellow appearance. The common name comes from the 12 black spots that occur on the yellow elytra along the back of the insect.

Beetles display a complete metamorphosis (think butterfly lifecycle), where they go through drastic differences in the larval and adult phases. The young look nothing like the adults. Immature spotted cucumber beetles are known as corn rootworms. They are white with a dark brown head, narrow in width, and less than 1 inch in length. Some may show a dark colored plate on top of the tail section, which the casual observer might perceive as a second head. These immatures live in the soil where they feed on plant roots, hence the common name rootworms. These immatures eventually pupate and emerge as adult spotted cucumber beetles.

Adult spotted cucumber beetles emerge from the soil in mid-spring as soil temperatures rise above 55°F. They feed on a wide range of plants but seem to be fond of cucurbit plants. After adults emerge in spring, they look to mate and deposit eggs. Immatures hatch and begin feeding as rootworms in the ground. After 2-4 weeks, those immatures will pupate and emerge as adults, where they feed on above-ground plant parts and continue the cycle, producing multiple generations during the growing season.

Immature feeding stresses root systems on older plants and can cause complete failure in young seedlings. Adults feed on leaves (reduced photosynthesis), flowers (reduced pollination), and fruit (reduced appearance). Not only do they cause physical injury, but they can also vector plant diseases like bacterial wilt and cucumber mosaic virus.

A good management program for spotted cucumber beetles in the home vegetable garden starts with scouting. The adults are easy to recognize because of their greenish-yellow appearance and 12 black spots. Some organic gardeners have reported success using spinosad, a biopesticide derived from a naturally occurring soil bacterium. This product is considered a contact insecticide and needs to come into direct contact with pest insects to be effective. The use of diatomaceous earth in the rootzone and interplanting with marigolds, radishes, and nasturtiums can also be helpful when integrated into a spotted cucumber beetle control program. Conventional gardeners should look for products that contain permethrin or cyfluthrin that include labeled directions for use in vegetable gardens. As with all organic and conventional pesticides, be sure to read and follow label instructions for proper use and storage of these helpful products.

Hope you all had an enjoyable couple of weeks. The temperatures are starting to climb but it feels better than the below freezing temperatures and snow we had not so long ago. I am sure the children are thrilled to be out of school. My granddaughter had a couple of her college friends come visit for Memorial Weekend. She and her Mom gave them the grand tour. They especially liked riding on the street car and of course the food!

Well, as promised, here is the companion piece to the little chick I shared with you last month. This little bunny has a cute little pink light up nose. It also stands in the slotted board so it can be displayed. The background is based with Crystal Blue and the bubbles are stenciled with Desert Turquoise and Snow White with Snow White dip dots between. The headband is Cotton Candy shaded with Antique Pink, highlighted with Snow White. The Bunny is Almondine and is shaded with Asphaltum. This was such a fun piece to paint. The designer of this cutie is Liz Viglotto. I like her fun designs. I can’t wait to have a reason to display these cuties.

Well, that’s my project for this time. So what will your next project be? Mine....I don’t know. But I know it will be fun!

Sincerely, Paula Johnson

Well, a few developments have happened in the local sports scene since our last article. So, let’s start at the beginning.

The retirement of Derek Carr was not only the best thing for him but a GODSEND for the Saints franchise. He not only saves the team millions of dollars, but he also ends one of the worst quarterback tenures in team history and we had Heath Shuler at quarterback. Carr never tried to fit in and chastised the city and the fans for not settling for mediocrity or for his excuses.

New draft pick Tyler Shough made more head way in 24 hours with the Who Dat Nation than Carr did in 24 months. Shough ate at a local restaurant his first night here and then was found slapping elbows with the fans at local bars. The fans might still question his abilities to run the franchise but he surely has won them over as being one of us.

Next, we have the 4th seeded Southeastern Lions walking into Baton Rouge and defeating the #1 seed LSU Tigers not once but twice in Tiger Park. This was a shock to some around the nation but not to this sports guy as I knew SLU was going to be a tough team and better coached than the Bayou Bengals.

LSU and Beth Torina have been winning just enough lately without winning the games that they need to or that they should. Her teams have consistently faltered at the end of the season and now her All-American pitcher has said adios and entered the transfer portal. Now, on paper the Lady Tigers are welcoming in the Top Class of the 2025 recruiting cycle but it is yet to be seen if Torina has the chops to succeed with them. It is my opinion, that Torina should not have been retained after this season and LSU should have given SLU head coach Rick Fremin a call to move 45 minutes west to take over a program that is itching for a spark of life. Needless to say, the Tigers have yet to make a decision which means it will be status quo next season with LSU again not making a Super Regional or the Womens College World Series!

Now, let us move from the dirt diamond to the baseball diamond and talk a bit about Jay Johnson’s Tiger Team. Sure, they did not win the SEC Tournament but that has not happened in over 7 years. Johnson is not like Manieri who wants to win the Tournament in Hoover so bad he sacrifices his chances to win in Omaha and the larger trophy. Johnson plays chess while everyone else is still playing checkers.

The bats did not do the team any favors during the SEC Tournament but the pitching staff looked as strong as it has been all season which is a perfect time for this corps to get things moving full speed ahead. More than likely, the Tiger bats will find their groove again and when they do the pitching is what will get this team out a Regional to a Super Regional and finally back in Omaha for the College World Series.

Speaking of Regionals, the Tigers are a lock to host and even though the Top 8 seeds have not been announced by press time, this team is surely in that number and will not have to leave the friendly confines of Alex Box Stadium until punching their tickets to Nebraska!

LSU is playing host to an NCAA Regional for the 28th time and for the second time in the past three seasons as the program begins its quest at a National Championship. The 16 host sites for the NCAA Regionals include:

NCAA Regional Hosts

Athens, Georgia – Georgia (42-15)

Auburn, Alabama – Auburn (38-18)

Austin, Texas – Texas (42-12)

Baton Rouge, Louisiana – LSU (43-14)

Chapel Hill, North Carolina – North Carolina (42-12)

Clemson, South Carolina – Clemson (44-16)

Conway, South Carolina – Coastal Carolina (48-11)

Corvallis, Oregon – Oregon State (41-12-1)

Eugene, Oregon – Oregon (42-14)

Fayetteville, Arkansas – Arkansas (43-13)

Hattiesburg, Mississippi – Southern Mississippi (44-14)

Knoxville, Tennessee – Tennessee (43-16)

Los Angeles, California – UCLA (42-16)

Nashville, Tennessee – Vanderbilt (42-16)

Oxford, Mississippi – Ole Miss (40-19)

Tallahassee, Florida – Florida State (38-14)

Either way, we will have a full recap of the LSU Post Season when we have a new article in 2 weeks and more than likely the Tigers will still be playing. Don’t forget, you are invited to check out our sports only podcast. You can find us online under https://anchor.fm/flablete or on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts or may other platforms. As always, if you have an idea or certain people/teams you would like us to cover or if you just have a question… please shoot us an email at flablete@gmail.com

CONTROLLING FLEAS IN THE HOME AND LAWN

If you own a dog or cat, you will have to control fleas. Even light flea infestations are annoying to pets, and some dogs and cats develop skin problems because they are al-lergic to flea bites. Heavy flea infestations can cause pets to be unthrifty and cause anemia in puppies and kittens. Fleas also bite people, although generally not vectors of any hu-man diseases east of the Mississippi River, and heavy infestations in the home or yard can make life miserable for pet owners and their family and friends. Although there are many different species of fleas in the world, the cat flea, Ctenocephalides felis, is the species that most commonly occurs on dogs and cats in the United States.

As parasites of dogs, cats, and other mammals, adult fleas spend most of their time on their host. Eggs, which are normally laid when the host is at rest, fall from the host and accumulate in the bedding area. The flea larvae that hatch from these eggs develop by feeding on dander, dried blood droplets, and other organic matter that accumulates in such bedding areas. After feeding in this location for several weeks, flea larvae enter a nonfeeding pupal stage and then emerge as adult fleas. These adult fleas hop onto a host to obtain the blood meals they require.

To control fleas successfully, you need to control them in all areas where they occur: on the pet, in the house, and in the yard. Because flea larvae require high humidity and are repelled by sunlight, they usually move into cracks and crevices or burrow deep in carpet or rugs. The larvae mature in 1 to 3 weeks and then spin a small cocoon in which they develop into adults. This cocoon, or pupal stage, can be just a week long or several months long.

Occasionally, high numbers of fleas will be present in a home lawn. This usually occurs when a fleainfested pet or stray or wild animals visit the lawn often. Not allowing pets inside the house is the surest way to avoid having fleas inside the house, but not all pet owners favor this method. Whether or not pets are allowed inside, the first step in flea control is to treat the pet(s) with an effective and appropriate onpet treatment.

Fortunately, there are several highly effective treatments that can be applied to pets for preventive flea control but, successful control requires a three-part approach. 1. Adult fleas must be controlled on the pet using topical, spot-on type treatments, flea collars, dips, sprays, and so forth. 2. Immature and adult fleas must be controlled in any in-door areas frequented by the infested pet, with special attention given to pet bedding areas. You must wash your pet’s bedding and vacuum carpets regularly to complete your flea control regimen. 3. Fleas must be controlled in any infest-ed lawn areas frequented by the pet. Fleas can be controlled in the yard by applying a spray or granular insecticide labeled for use against fleas in home lawns. When attempting to control fleas in a home lawn situation, keep in mind you will not have lasting suc-cess unless fleas are also controlled on all animals that visit the area often.

Extension Publication 2597 Control Fleas on Your Pet, In Your House and in Your Yard addresses control of fleas on the pet and indoors. Extension Publication 2331 Control Insect Pests in and Around the Home Lawn address-es control of fleas outdoors. Each publication lists products that are labeled for their respective purposes.

Fleas can be present year-round, but they become much more plentiful in the spring and summer. Protecting pets from these parasites also helps protect humans and helps prevent infestations in the home and yard. Fortunately, there are several effective products that can be applied directly to the animal to control fleas. Some of these products work on both ticks and fleas, while some work only for fleas or only for ticks. Some of these products may be used on dogs or cats, while some may not be used on cats. Be sure to read the label carefully and understand what you are buying.

Visit https://extension.msstate.edu/ to find more information on controlling fleas and other insect pests.

LARGE PATCH DISEASE OF TURF

Large patch, caused by the pathogen Rhizoctonia solani, is one of the most common lawn disease in Mississippi during the spring and fall. Typically the times when our warm season grasses are at their weakest. This disease is characterized by circular patches with brown or smokygray outer edges. The circular patches may continue to grow to 20 feet or more in diameter and may intersect with other patches, creating complex patterns.

In larger patches, the inside of the patch may begin to turn green again as it starts to recover. The patches often occur at the same location year after year, usually in low areas or where dew or moisture persists for longer periods, such as shaded areas. The patches grow from the center outward and may spread rapidly or slowly, depending on moisture and tem-perature conditions. Patches grow as long as conditions are favorable and may spread to 20 feet or more. The color of the outside edge of an actively growing patch is usually a cinnamon-brown

The fungus begins its attack at the base of leaf sheaths, where the leaves attach to the rope-like stolon. The base of the leaves turns dark brown to almost purple and become soft when conditions are moist and the disease is active. In the absence of moisture, the base will turn tan or reddish-brown and harden. Because the base of the leaf is rotting, the flow of moisture and minerals to the upper leaves is cut off, and the top of the leaf changes color before dying and turning brown.

Prevention is the most effective method of disease control. To prevent large patch or other lawn diseas-es from developing, follow these disease-control procedures:

• Use grass varieties adapted for your area.

• Properly manage your lawn properly by using recommended practices for watering, mowing, ferti-lizing, and removing thatch.

• Avoid excessive nitrogen fertilizer (water-soluble nitrogen sources), which promotes a lush turf that is easily attacked by many plant diseases, including large patch. Many homeowners fertilize their lawn too early, encouraging large patch disease. As a general rule, you should not fertilize until you have mowed your warm-season turfgrass lawn at least twice. Early fertilization will feed more weeds than grass and will worsen large patch.

• Avoid watering late in the afternoon or mid-morning, as it allows grass to remain wet for extended periods, encouraging disease development.

• Water infrequently and deeply at times that minimize the leaf wetness period.

• Minimize thatch, which is the buildup of grass and plant debris in the root and crown areas of the turf.

Excessive thatch creates a favorable environment for the growth of many disease-causing fungi and an unfavorable environment for turf plants. Thatch gives the lawn a spongy texture. If you can wiggle your finger through more than a half-inch of grass before reaching the soil, you probably have excessive thatch. Thatch is most common in zoysiagrass but can occur in most turf types.

Recommended Fungicides

Three active ingredients for residential use are available in garden stores and co-ops. Products contain-ing one of the active ingredients myclobutanil or propiconazole could potentially burn turf in temperatures higher than 80°F so be cautious when choosing products when temperatures rise. Using fungicides can be risky as it is hard to find a time in which the temperature doesn’t reach or exceed 80 degrees in Southern MS. Many times it is best to properly manage your turf as their lots of time to regrow and reduce the risk of further injuring your lawn with an improper fungicide treatment.

HOW-TO HEAT PET SAFETY GUIDE

In the summer, Louisiana can have temperatures that reach or feel like 100 degrees, posing severe heat-related dangers for people and pets. Just like humans, pets are vulnerable to overheating and can experience various heat-related problems just like we do. As temperatures rise, it’s important to take a few extra steps to keep your pets safe, cool, and comfortable. Here are four easy steps that can help them beat the heat this season:

Always keep a close eye on or keep your pet at home to avoid dehydration and the risk of heatstroke. Never leave them alone in a parked car. It only takes minutes for the temperature inside your car to rise by 20-30 degrees higher than outside, creating a dire situation for your pet if left inside.

Bring a portable/collapsible bowl and a container of water, so your pet always has access to fresh water when indoors. Like humans, pets need enough water to keep them hydrated when it’s hot.

Schedule time outside with your pet during cooler hours of the day like in the early morning or late evening. It’s best to avoid playtime or walks during peak hours of the day—typically between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. during the summer.

Provide shade from the sun to keep your pet’s skin and paws from burning. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws, so stick to shaded paths or grassy fields to protect your paws and skin. Also, consider purchasing paw wax or pet booties to protect their paws and using pet-safe sunscreen for single-coated breeds. Now that you know the basics of keeping your pet cool, it’s important to recognize when they might already be in danger as well. Stay alert for any signs that your pet may be overheating such as heavy panting, drooling, being very tired, throwing up, or suddenly collapsing. If you see any of these signs, take your pet to a cool place right away and call your vet as soon as possible for help. Keeping your pet safe from the heat is simpler than you think, just as simple as it is for your pet to face heat-related risks. These few simple steps can keep them safe this summer and for many more hot days ahead. For more tips, visit https://www.louisianaspca.org/heat-awareness-for-pets or call us at 504.934.6931 for advice on beating the heat with your pets this summer.

START is an all volunteer 501 C3 organization made up of members who rescue, foster and care for homeless cats and dogs. Our rescues are fostered in the homes of our volunteers until they are ready to be adopted. We are always in need of foster homes, especially for dogs. We greatly appreciate donations of dog and cat food, as well as funds to spay/neuter and provide veterinary care for the rescued pets. We can be contacted by email. Our address is startcares@hotmail.com. We are also on Facebook. Please contact us if you would like to make a donation to START, or to work together with us to help the abandoned pets in our community.

Two terrified kittens, attempting to hide in a bush, caught the attention of someone on her afternoon walk. There was a rustling sound and then the shocking sight of one kitten whose neck was caught in the fork of a branch. That one would have suffocated and the other would have become dinner for an owl or a snack for a coyote. Her pleasant walk turned into a kitten rescue operation as she scooped them up and headed back to her house. Named Bogart and Harlow by their rescuer, the two kittens have become part of the START program to help homeless cats and kittens find forever homes. There are so many homeless cats and kittens in need of help, but not enough people to care for them until they are adopted. Please contact your local animal shelter or rescue organization to find out how you can help homeless pets.
