Tony’s Take WAY TOO EARLY PREDICTIONS FOR 2026 LSU BASEBALL
Coming down from June’s LSU high in Omaha, I took the time to check out their roster, read my preseason story from February about the Tigers’ upcoming 2025 baseball season and do some early prognostication for 2026.
Starters - Unless he decides to go pro, Jared Jones has one more year at first. If he leaves, look for Jay Johnson to move Ethan Frey to the bag. Frey is tall and his bat is necessary. At second, Daniel Dickinson could be back as well as Monster Milan at short, but let’s assume Dickinson is out of the picture.
I’m not confident whom Johnson would put there, so let’s leave that spot open to the best available reserve, transfer or freshman coming in. Third base should be manned by Swiss Army Knife player Tanner Reaves. In the outfield, pencil in Derek Curiel in left and Jake Brown in center if Chris Stanfield leaves. Right field should be John Pearson, whose power bat potential could rival Jones. Catcher almost by default would be manned by sophomore-to-be Cade Arrambide and Frey will be at DH if not at first. Otherwise, Casan Evans could DH.
Weekend/ Closers/ Relief Pitchers - Right-handers William Schmidt, Chase Shores and Zac Cowan should be the aces with righty Jaden Noot and two young lefty transfers at the spot starter level - Danny Lanchenmayer from North Dakota State and Tennessee’s Ryler Smart, an incoming sophomore. Both had impressive records this year with LSU having faced Lanchenmayer this past spring. Looking at the length of Shores, I expect similar physical specimens Maverick Rizy and/or Grant Fontenot to develop as actual closers for the ’26 team. Pencil in Conner Ware, D.J. Primeaux, Cooper Williams, Gavin Guidry, Jacob Mayers and Conner Benge to stick as middle relievers after one or two consider the transfer portal but all decide to stay. Ware, Primeaux and Williams are all returning southpaws.
Reserves - Edward Yaman IV, Catcher, Mikey Ryan and David Hogg II, infielders, Ryan Costello in the outfield with Dylan Thompson at utility , much like Jake Brown’s role this year.
Possible Outgoing Portal Players Kade Woods, Chandler Dorsey and Deven Sheerin, pitchers, Mic Paul in the outfield and Blaise Priester at catcher. Three transferred in this year and none saw the field as far as I remember and two are juniors. Priester was up against an incoming freshman who saw action this past season at catcher and really there was no buzz about Mic Paul. The pitchers are facing too much talent and competition at LSU to realistically think they can make an impact, two as juniors and one as a senior next season.
Biggest Holes to Fill. Michael Braswell’s glove at third, replacing two phenomenal starting pitchers, catching experience.
I’m sure Johnson wants to add talent to the infield roster, especially the corners, and probably would welcome a couple of high profile freshmen or transfer portal outfielders. To me, if a strong catching talent is available, he would have a good chance to grab the starting position for ’26. Look for a haul of about eight freshmen and six portal players. And let’s see how much egg I need to scrape off my face once the summer and fall recruitment and transfer seasons end.
Starting lineup for 2026: Curiel in left, Frey at first, Milam at short, Brown in center, Pearson in right, Reaves at third, TBD at second, Evans at DH and Arrambide catching.
2026 Tiger Prediction: Wall-to-wall number one in preseason, during the SEC run and postseason with a very probable return to Omaha and a 50-50 shot at title number 9. And, like this year, no significant injuries during the season. Curiel a shoo-in All American and one or two pitchers garnering All American honors as well.

BARK LICE SHOWING UP ON LANDSCAPE TREES.
One of the things you learn while working as an Extension Agent is that most of the landscape issues we encounter happen every year. Whether it be a disease problem or an insect problem, everything seems to have its time on the calendar. One of those issues that happens every summer is the appearance of webbing that covers tree trunks and limbs. Sometimes it’s only a small section and other times it may be the entire branch. Whatever the case, it is quite odd and can cause concern to the beginning gardener.
To make a long story short, there is no need to worry about this insect. We consider them beneficial in the grand scheme of things. These little creatures spend their entire life on the trunks of trees and shrubs. Most of the time they go unnoticed. That is until a curious gardener notices a group of them when they first hatch or when the colony produces a white, grey webbing covering the bark of a tree. We refer to these insects as bark lice or tree cattle.
Bark lice are insects in the order, Psocoptera, and commonly referred to as psocids. They get the nickname because of their small size, like how some people call aphids, plant lice. Others call them tree cattle because of the way they move together. If you look underneath the webbing, you can see small brown insects traveling up and down the bark of the tree. Bark lice nymphs appear dark gray with pale yellow bands between abdominal segments. The adults have shiny black wings that are held like a tent over their abdomens. The webbing itself does not cause any damage but merely provides protection from birds and other predators.
Bark lice do not harm the tree. They will feed on dead bark cells, fungi, algae, and other debris growing on the tree trunk. In other words, they clean the trunks of trees. They even feed on lichens, the bluish-green scaly organisms found on the trunks of woody plants throughout the southeast region on the United States. This fact in turn makes them a beneficial insect in the landscape. They are working for you!
Because of this beneficial nature, I do not recommend doing anything about it. Sometimes the webbing may be unsightly. If this is the case, then I would suggest using high-pressure water to physically remove the webbing from the trunk. You could let them remain. In a couple of months, it will blend in well with the festivities of Halloween. Add a spooky feel to your landscape this year by leaving bark lice alone and they will help decorate your yard with cobwebs and silk!

Hope you all had a Super Fabulous Fourth of July! Thankfully the rain held off where I am and everyone close around was able to enjoy their fireworks. I was able to watch the fireworks that my neighbors were setting off. My Grandson was on duty at the firehouse working and my Granddaughter was actually working at one of the fireworks stands. I had a very nice day and evening. Very glad I decided to stay home instead of venturing out to watch fireworks as my Grandson’s cat did not like the loud noise at all. I am sure there were a lot of scared pets.

As requested, here is something cool. I painted an array of snow cones for yall. I sure could go for one right about now. I had the surface in my stash of wood pieces and thought this would be perfect for something “cool”. What better way to cool off than with a snowball! And here are some of the traditional flavors! We have Ice Cream or it can be Pineapple, spearmint, orange, bubble gum, strawberry, and grape. Look at the cold ice coming through where the syrup has soaked down into the ice. The only thing missing for your enjoyment of this refreshing treat is the straw and spoon! I even decided to put them in decorative cups for a little added pizzazz! I wish I had more of these surfaces, I can think of so many more things to paint on it. But, when the creative brain isn’t working you wonder why you are getting the one surface and what on earth you will do with it. Oh well, life goes on!
Well that’s my project for this time. Hope you like it. So, what will your next project be? Mine....I don’t know. But, I know it will be fun!
Sincerely Paula Johnson

Staying in the Game: What Sports Fans Can Do Between July 1st and the Start of Football Season
For die-hard football fans, the stretch between July 1st and the kickoff of football season in late August or early September can feel like a drought in the middle of a long, hot summer. The NFL and college football camps haven’t quite opened up fully, and preseason games are still weeks away. But don’t worry—this isn’t dead time for sports fans. In fact, it’s a golden window to dive into other sports, explore new experiences, and deepen your appreciation for the game you love. Here’s how to make the most of the gap.
1. Embrace Baseball’s Midseason Thrill
July is prime time for Major League Baseball. With the All-Star Game usually held midmonth, followed by the trade deadline at the end of July, storylines are heating up. This is when playoff pictures begin to form and new stars start to shine. Even if you’re not a hardcore baseball fan, it’s the perfect time to catch a game—live or on TV—and enjoy the tradition, strategy, and summer atmosphere that baseball brings.
2. Dive Into the NBA and NHL Offseasons
Both the NBA and NHL wrap up in June, but their offseasons begin in earnest during July. Free agency, blockbuster trades, and Summer League basketball provide no shortage of drama. Keeping tabs on player movement and team strategies offers compelling narratives and can satisfy that sports-analysis craving that football fans love. It’s also a chance to scout which franchises are building championship contenders.
3. Catch International Sports Action
Summer is often packed with major global sporting events. Whether it’s the Summer Olympics (every four years), the UEFA European Championship, Copa América, or international tennis like Wimbledon, these competitions showcase the world’s best athletes and bring high stakes and emotional moments. They’re ideal for fans who enjoy rooting for their country or discovering rising international stars.
4. Explore Fantasy Football Prep
If you’re a football fan, fantasy football might already be part of your autumn routine. July is the perfect time to start researching for your draft. Podcasts, mock drafts, training camp reports, and player rankings all start heating up. Early prep gives you a competitive edge and keeps you plugged into the sport even during the offseason.
5. Rewatch Classic Football Moments
Satisfy your craving by revisiting some of your favorite games or NFL Films documentaries. Whether it’s the Super Bowl replays, college football rivalries, or famous comeback wins, these deep dives can rekindle your love for the game and get you even more hyped for kickoff.
6. Attend Training Camp or Preseason Events
By late July, many NFL teams open their training camps to the public. It’s a rare chance to see players up close, hear from coaches, and get a taste of the upcoming season. Preseason games start in early August and offer a look at rookies, position battles, and team chemistry in development.
Final Thoughts
The stretch between July 1st and the start of football season doesn’t have to be a sports wasteland. With a little creativity and curiosity, fans can stay engaged, informed, and excited. Consider it the perfect preseason warm-up—not just for the teams, but for you too.
Don’t forget, you are invited to check out our sports only podcast. You can find us online under https:// anchor.fm/flablete or on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts or may other platforms. SNAKES
Most snakes you encounter near your house are nonven-omous. However, it is possible to encounter one of Mississippi’s six venomous snakes. The risk of a venomous snake bite is low. Snakes are not aggressive and typically bite only when surprised or feel threatened. They often try to avoid people or remain still to blend in. Look before stepping around areas where snakes might be hiding, such as under logs or rocks, and be cautious when moving items like old boards. Wearing long pants and boots can offer some protection.
The most effective way to discourage snakes is through habitat management. Keeping your lawn mowed reduces hiding places for snakes. Piles of boards, firewood, bricks, or leaves should be removed. Vegetation and structures that offer shelter for rodents, a common food source for snakes, should also be removed or managed. Additionally, storing pet food in sealed containers helps to reduce rodent populations, which in turn makes the area less attractive to snakes.
Beyond managing the habitat around your home, preventing snakes from entering buildings is crucial. This is known as exclusion. Check around the base of the home and stor-age sheds for access points where snakes or snake prey could crawl under. These areas can be closed off using building materials such as sheet metal or small-mesh hardware cloth. To be effective, the material should extend about 6 inches below the soil surface. Your home’s foun-dation should also be inspected for cracks or openings, as these can allow snakes or snake prey to enter. Close all openings larger than a quarter of an inch, and use latex caulk or insulating foam around any gaps where surface wires or pipes enter. For rural homes, make sure that snakes cannot enter through open septic or treatment plant drainpipes. If the pipe or tile is open at the end, it can be covered with 1/4-inch mesh hardware cloth.
If you are bitten by a snake, get emergency medical help as soon as possible. Try to remain calm. Remove any constricting items from the affected area, such as rings or shoes, before swelling occurs. Wash the wound area. Immobilize the affected area if possible and keep the bite at or slightly below heart level. Try to remember what the snake looks like to help with identification, but do not attempt to kill or capture the snake. Even dead snakes, in-cluding decapitated heads, can still bite and inject venom.
Snakes are effective predators because they can access pests in areas other animals cannot. They provide great benefit through the control of pests such as rats, mice, insects, and moles. When snakes are not causing a problem, it is better to leave them alone. For more infor-mation on how to control snake problems around the home, see Extension Publication P2277, Reducing Snake Problems Around Homes. For information about the dis-tribution and identifying characteristics of Mississippi’s venomous snakes, see Extension Publication P3529.

As the 4th of July approaches, many of us are preparing to celebrate with patriotic décor, fireworks, and gatherings with family and friends. Why not extend the celebration into the garden with plants that proudly show off our nation’s colors—red, white, and blue? Let’s take a closer look at three eyecatching selections that capture the spirit of the season: White yarrow, Blue Plumbago, and Summerific Valentine’s Crush hibiscus.
White yarrow is a classic perennial that brings a soft, elegant touch to garden beds and borders. Its flat-topped clusters of pure white blooms float above finely divided, fern-like foliage, adding a lacy texture that contrasts beautifully with bolder plants. Yarrow thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, making it ideal for hot Mississippi summers. Once established, it’s drought tolerant and low maintenance. Better yet, its nectar-rich blooms attract butterflies, bees, and other beneficial insects.
White yarrow is perfect for mixing with bold reds and blues, serving as a visual bridge between strong colors and giving the garden a harmonious, airy feel.
Few plants offer a true blue bloom, and Blue Plumbago delivers with ease. This tropical evergreen shrub thrives in the heat and humidity of the Deep South, producing an abundance of pale to mid-blue phlox-like flowers from late spring through the first frost. Its mounded, semi-trailing growth habit makes it a versatile choice for hanging baskets, raised beds, or as a cascading groundcover along walls or borders.
Blue Plumbago performs best in full sun and prefers slightly acidic, well-drained soil. While it may die back in colder zones, in USDA zones 8 and warmer (like much of Mississippi), it often behaves like a perennial, returning each year stronger and more vigorous.
For a show-stopping red, nothing beats the Summerific Valentine’s Crush hardy hibiscus. This vigorous perennial delivers large, ruby-red blooms that can reach up to 8 inches across—perfect for making a bold patriotic statement in your garden. The flowers contrast dramatically with the deep green, maple-like foliage, creating a look that’s both tropical and perfectly suited to southern landscapes.
Valentine’s Crush prefers full sun and moist, well-drained soil. It’s best planted in garden beds where it has room to grow—it can reach 4 feet tall and wide. Despite its exotic appearance, it’s remarkably cold-hardy and returns reliably each year. Its giant blooms are a favorite of hummingbirds and butterflies, adding motion and life to the summer landscape.
Combine these plants in a mixed border or large container to create a dazzling display of patriotic pride. White yarrow softens the space with its feathery foliage and crisp blooms, Blue plumbago drapes gently over the edges, offering long-lasting color, and Summerific Valentine’s Crush takes center stage with its bold, red blossoms. Together, they form a red, white, and blue trio that captures the joy and vibrance of Independ-ence Day. As you celebrate the 4th this year, let your garden wave its own flag—one made of flowers.
THIS FOSTER-A-PET MONTH, YOU CAN BE THEIR HOPE
Imagine being scared, alone, and unsure if anyone will ever love you. This is how many shelter animals feel every day. They wait quietly, hoping for someone to give them a chance, and you have the power to change their story. When you open your home and heart to a foster pet, you can change their lives forever.
Fostering offers animals who’ve had a rough start more than just a roof over their heads. It gives them a safe and loving place to heal and grow. It allows them to learn to trust again and show their true personalities. Being in a home helps them feel calm and experience the love they deserve outside of a shelter before they are eventually adopted.
There are many ways to foster an animal in need. You could care for tiny kittens who need bottle feeding, shy dogs who need patience and kindness, care for a lonely rabbit that needs socialization, or animals recovering from illness or trauma. Your care and compassion can make a lasting difference. Also, you can be the reason a scared animal finds hope and a new chance at life.
As we celebrate Foster-A-Pet Month, consider the rewarding opportunity of becoming a foster parent for an animal in need. Fostering plays a crucial role in saving lives and have a profound, lasting impact on the pets they nurture. By opening your home to an animal, you provide them with the love and care they need to live a happier life without fear of abandonment or abuse. If you’re interested in learning more about this fulfilling experience, visit www.louisianaspca.org/foster for additional information.

START is an all volunteer 501 C3 organization made up of members who rescue, foster and care for homeless cats and dogs. Our rescues are fostered in the homes of our volunteers until they are ready to be adopted. We are always in need of foster homes, especially for dogs. We greatly appreciate donations of dog and cat food, as well as funds to spay/neuter and provide veterinary care for the rescued pets. We can be contacted by email. Our address is startcares@hotmail.com. We are also on Facebook. Please contact us if you would like to make a donation to START, or to work together with us to help the abandoned pets in our community.
One of four kittens trapped at a feeding site that flooded, this approximately four month old kitten is on her way to a safer place. She is older than the other three but is probably a sibling from a previous litter. Their mother was also caught, spayed, and will go to a barn home. None can return to the original location, which means homes will have to be found for all of them. Cats reproduce at a rate that makes it difficult for shelters and rescue organization to keep up with the population explosion that occurs when people fail to spay and neuter their pets. Pet cats that are allowed to roam without being spayed or neutered are the source of many homeless kittens that turn up everywhere this time of year. Please contact your local animal shelter or rescue organization for information on low-cost spay/ neuter for cats and dogs. If you feed them, bless you, but please take responsibility for having them spayed and neutered, too.
