The goal for each homeless animal that walks through the doors at the Louisiana SPCA is to find a loving forever home. After successfully finding forever homes for over 18,000 pets in 2020 alone, BISSELL Pet Foundation is again aiming to Empty the Shelters again by sponsoring reduced adoption fees of $50 for cats and dogs, including kittens and puppies, during May 1-15. The Louisiana SPCA Plaquemines and New Orleans Campuses are both participating in this event, but adoption appointments are required.

BISSELL Pet Foundation’s mission to find every pet a loving home is the driving force behind Empty the Shelters. In 2016, BPF created this reduced-fee adoption event to make an immediate impact on the nation’s ongoing pet homelessness problem. Since then, this program has encouraged prospective pet owners to consider adoption as their first option when bringing a pet into their family, as there are so many deserving animals waiting to be loved. At the Louisiana SPCA we have various breeds at any given time and animals are constantly being adopted - so we have new animals making their adoption debut every day! With the variety and volume of animals available to adopt, potential adopters are bound to find a new family member to adopt.

Every animal is adopted from the Louisiana SPCA is spayed or neutered, fully vaccinated, microchipped and heartworm tested. Each adoption also includes a bag of Hill’s Science Diet food and dogs receive a discount on training classes.

START is an all volunteer 501 C3 organization made up of members who rescue, foster and care for homeless cats and dogs. Our rescues are fostered in the homes of our volunteers until they are ready to be adopted. We are always in need of foster homes, especially for dogs. We greatly appreciate donations of dog and cat food, as well as funds to spay/neuter and provide veterinary care for the rescued pets. We can be contacted by email. Our address is startcares@hotmail.com. We are also on Facebook. Please contact us if you would like to make a donation to START, or to work together with us to help the abandoned pets in our community.

Kittens are here! If you want to attract attention, a litter of kittens is a great way to get a little crowd to gather around. People love to see them, pick them up, cuddle them and watch them play. However, when you ask for help caring for them, there are few interested in doing that. Why do we have so many of these little animals with no one to provide them with food or shelter? It is sad to see so many homeless kittens. There are simply not enough homes for all of them. Many end up abandoned on the street, trying to survive. Contact your local animal shelter or rescue organization to find out how you can help.
